early one full year after welcoming 2016, Goochland has seen plenty of changes. This year alone, residents have said a sad goodbye to one county administrator and embraced a new one, repeated the process with the superintendant of schools, and embarked on numerous efforts to enhance and protect the county’s natural beauty. We celebrated an Olympian, embraced solar energy and stepped up to help those facing hunger. We came out for Trump and against several development projects, and even kicked off an effort to make life better for the county’s shelter animals. Without further ado, here are just a few of the things Goochlanders were talking about this year… File photos

Minnick to serve as the chairman of the board for 2016. Minnick, who was elected to his second term in November, took over the leadership role from District 1 representative Susan Lascolette. Thanking Lascolette for her hard work and for “setting the standard” for his upcoming chairmanship, Minnick said he hoped to continue to foster the spirit of collaboration that the board had enjoyed for the previous four years. Lascolette, who was the first woman in the board’s history to hold the chairmanship, also thanked the citizens of Goochland and pledged that she and her fellow board members would continue working hard for them.

L.L. Bean chooses Goochland for school Thanks to a partnership with clothing and outdoor recreation equipment retailer L.L. Bean, Goochland leaders announced in January that the county would be home to the company’s only Outdoor Discovery School in Virginia. Beth Moore, current president of the Friends of Goochland Parks organization, said the partnership with L.L. Bean is one more step in spreading the word about Goochland’s park system. “We are thrilled that the LL Bean partnership will bring even more people down to enjoy the river and riverfront beauty of Tucker Park and Goochland County,” Moore said in January. “It is another opportunity for the Friends of Goochland Parks to increase environmental awareness and foster recreation amid the amazing natural elements found at Tucker Park.”

On Feb. 12, Goochland County Public Schools announced that James Lane has been named the 2016 Region I Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. Lane would go on to earn state Superintendent of the Year honor as well. (Lane has since left Goochland to serve as the Superintendant of Chesterfield County Public Schools). For Lane, who was hired in January of 2012 after serving as a superintendent in Middlesex County, the nod served to highlight not only his own efforts, but also those of the leadership team he worked with every day. Lane was no stranger to recognition: He was named in Richmond’s Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2013 and was one of 100 superintendents across the nation recognized at the White House in 2014 for extraordinary leadership in education and as a “future ready” leader.

Rubio, Clinton earn Goochland’s votes in March primary Donald Trump may have won the state of Virginia, but more Goochland Republican residents, it seemed, preferred Rubio. Once the local GOP votes cast in the March 1 Virginia Primary were counted, the junior senator from Florida, who came in second state-wide, just edged past Trump by a tally of 1,903 votes to 1,820. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was next in line with 984 votes, followed by Ohio’s Gov. John Kasich with 395 and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson with 271. Despite having suspended their campaigns several weeks ago, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie

Rebecca Dickson retires as Goochland County Administrator On March 31, Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson officially retired from the position she had held for the last six years. Since coming to Goochland from Chesterfield, where she served as a budget director and deputy county administrator for human services, Dickson has garnered a reputation as a tireless worker and skilled problem-solver. “Her knowledge, tenacity, preparedness and willingness to dig in and get dirty are amazing and a great reason why we’ve been able to accomplish so much and had so much fun doing it,” said District 2 Supervisor Manuel Alvarez.

Alvarez recalled his first meeting with Dickson in 2011, during which he gave her a card with a list of the promises he had made to voters. “For several months after that she pulled out that card every time we met to make sure I felt we were moving in the right direction,” Alvarez s a i d . “And we certainly were.” T o n o w Dickson retired Chesterfield County Administrator Jay Stegmaier, who worked with Dickson before she came to Goochland, her abilities have always been second to none. “From her first days in “The Pit — as Chesterfield’s Budget Office was affectionately called — Becky demonstrated a passion for excellence,” Stegmaier

And as those in attendance celebrated happily with plastic cups of champagne, GFCFS Food Pantry Manager Terry Lynn Ebright took a few moments to thank all involved. “Over a year ago, GFCFS added a second weekly food distribution time and saw a significant surge in the number of families we provide for,” Ebright explained. “While our space for food has not increased, our supply of food has to meet the need of additional families. The Parke at Manakin Woods saw the necessity for additional storage onsite and took action. Thanks their generosity, the new climate-controlled space can hold up to 15,000 more pounds of food for our clients.” The new storage shed, which sits just behind the main GFCFS building, was made possible by

But, now, after years of finding ways to deliver services within an increasingly cramped and cobbled together workspace, the organization may soon get the extra space it so desperately needs. In late April, GFCFS announced that the start of a $5.85 million capital campaign to fund construction of a 20,000-square- foot building on the current site of the Family Services’ offices at 3001 River Road West, as well the conversion of the existing main building into emergency housing. High school principal Mike Newman retires Goochland High School principal Mike Newman retired at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, bringing a close to a career in education that has spanned over 40 years. When it comes to his own next chapter, Newman admitted it won’t be entirely unpleasant to be free from the notoriously demanding schedule of a high school principal. Of course, the transition won’t be easy. “I’m going to miss it more than I can tell you,” Newman said in May. “But I’m going to stay connected to it — it will always be important to me.”

bidding farewell to retiring County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors announced in June that John A. Budesky would be stepping into the role. Budesky began his duties as County Administrator effective Aug. 1. “Goochland is really a gem in the Richmond region,” said Budesky, who previously served as a Deputy County Administrator in Hanover. “I want to thank you for entrusting me with this opportunity and I look forward to working with each and every one of you.” Board Chairman Robert Minnick said Budesky’s manner during the initial interview process was something that impressed him right away. “He’s very even-tempered, calm and professional,” said Minnick, adding that Budesky’s extensive background in many areas of local government also helped distinguish him in the initial pool of about 40 applicants for the position. “He’s really a good fit for us,” said Minnick, “but we also wanted to make sure that we had someone who would fit well in the community.” Budesky, who began his local government management career as a department head in Washington County, Maryland, also served as County Administrator of New Kent County from 2005-2009 before being named Executive Director of the Virginia’s Worker’s Compensation Commission. He also brings city management experience from Hagerstown, Maryland and Manassas to his new position in Goochland County. Local church cemetery hit by vandals Members of Goochland’s Second Union Baptist Church were left to deal with a significant clean up after vandals knocked over dozens of headstones in their church cemetery

in June. According to Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew, investigators still don’t know who committed the vandalism, which involved prying up or kicking over at least 50 markers. Vivian Anthony arrived at the cemetery, located on Hadensville Fife Road, to find that her mother Katherine Glover’s headstone had been pushed off its base. The church has surveillance cameras that show a white sedan in the parking lot around the time they think the crime occurred, but Agnew said that is all they have to go on. To Agnew, the crime is as ugly as it is pointless. “There’s just no reason for this,” he said. “It’s just meanspirited vandalism.”

Former Shenandoah school superintendent hired to lead GCPS The mood appeared jovial as the Goochland County School Board convened for special meeting June 23, and board chairman Kevin Hazzard wasted little time in explaining why that was. “This is a celebration,” Hazzard told the small group in attendance, just before the board officially welcomed Jeremy Raley as the county’s new school superintendent. Raley came to Goochland from Shenandoah County Public Schools where he is served as superintendent. He replaced former superintendent James Lane, who is now leading Chesterfield’s school system. Addressing those gathered tht morning, Raley said he was very pleased with the opportunity to come to Goochland. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here,” said Raley, adding that his family had enthusiastically supported the decision as well. “From the first time I met the board, I said ‘That’s it, that is where we see Year-end review > 11

As we look back at the year 2016, it’s easy to conclude that it was a year like no other. There was the good (the Olympics), the bad (a vitriol-soaked Presidential election), and the just plain odd. And firmly in that last category, particularly for those who work in the media world or just follow it closely, we can add the rise of socalled “fake news.” Even if you haven’t heard of fake news, the term given to false stories produced largely by websites and spread through social media sites, you have probably still come across at least a few examples — possibly without realizing it. Plenty of it isn’t actually dangerous: Who is truly hurt, for example, by believing a man in Spain has figured out how to train cockatoos to file your taxes for you? No one. But a fair amount of fake news — particularly when it purports to offer damning information about candidates running for office — can have far-reaching consequences. While I wish we could say that the New Year will allow us to leave fake news behind us, the way we do with last year’s fashions, we all know that isn’t likely to happen. So the best we can do, as both contentious news-consumers and champions of good old-fashioned common sense, is to make sure that we are always reading critically, and always challenging those who deliver us our news to maintain the highest standards. As we move forward into 2017, we here at the Gazette would like to thank our wonderful, dedicated readers for their support, and pledge that we will continue to deliver information about our community in a way that is fair, honest and ethical. Thank you for the trust you have placed in us, and we wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Goochland athletes’ success highlights the 2016 season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Goochland sports scene in 2016 was one to remember for the Bulldogs and Benedictine Cadets. Both schools had strong teams throughout the year and brought home to the hardware to prove it. The most valuable hardware of them all was what Benedictine graduate Townley Haas brought back from the Rio Olympics — an Olympic gold medal. Haas was a member of the winning 4x200 freestyle relay team with Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and legendary swimmer Michael Phelps. The spring sports scene was especially strong for Goochland High School. On the track, Goochland’s boys 4x800 relay team won the state title with a new state record time of 8:14.13. The team consisted of Larry

Minor, Brandon Pleasants, Austin Bruce and Reid Caudill. Those four Bulldogs also were the Group 2A East champions in the same event with an 8:33.61, which was a regional record. Goochland’s Chase Bernstein won his second consecutive Group 2A state tennis singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over John-Reed Barnes of Gate City. The Virginia Tech signee partnered up with his brother Ryan Bernstein to win the Group 2A state doubles championship as well. That match was against Maggie Walker’s Karl Katlaps and Pierce Terry. While the Green Dragons’ duo was able to best the Bernsteins last season, Ryan and Chase avenged that defeat with a 6-4, 6-3 win to win the state championship. On the baseball diamond, the Green Dragons got the best of the Bulldogs in a 3-1 final, as

Goochland was one win away from adding a state baseball championship to its trophy case. Tanner Bradshaw was pitching a gem until the fifth inning when the Green Dragons scored three runs, which were enough to stifle Goochland’s state championship hopes. While that defeat stopped Goochland this season, the team reloads this year and will have a good shot to find themselves back in the title game once again. Goochland’s girls soccer team rode a strong offense powered by Rachel McCann and Maddie Goff and a stout defense led by goalie Catherine Ford all the way to the Group 2A state semifinals. Ford was strong in the net against Radford, allowing just one goal in each half. But, the Bobcats defense was just that much better and allowed just one goal to Goff late in the second half.

The Bulldogs softball team had a stellar season with Kailyn Spencer being incredibly effective in the circle throughout the season. However, a 6-3 loss to Page County in the Group 2A East semifinals ended the Bulldogs season one game shy of a state tournament berth. Two members of the softball team, Sarah Ramsbottom and Spencer, signed to play in college in the fall. Ramsbottom will play at Presbyterian, while Spencer will head to UVA-Wise. In the fall, Goochland’s football and volleyball teams were impressive as they each powered their way through the playoffs. The football team was led by a strong defense anchored an even stronger running game. Cordell Mattox and Marcus Burton were two among many Bulldogs that made their presence felt this season. Mattox was named

first team All-Metro on defense. Goochland was undefeated up until they ran into Appomattox in the Group 2A semifinals and the undefeated season ended there with a 45-13 defeat. On the volleyball court, the defending state champs of the Goochland volleyball team went up against a tough task in Buffalo Gap in the 2A East semifinals. With a trip to the state tournament on the line, the Bison edged out Goochland in four sets. On the wrestling mat, Benedictine won its third consecutive state wrestling championship in the winter. The Cadets fell short against Collegiate in the VISAA state football championship. In youth sports, the Goochland GYAA Pony team made history by earning its first trip to the World Series as they were the Virginia State Champions.

In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit to the crime but acknowledges the prosecution’s evidence is sufficient for a finding of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the plea is tantamount to pleading guilty. Although no definitive motive was established, the prosecution theorized that Brooking’s slaying was related to a will that was filed five weeks before the death of Carroll A. “Bush” Parrish — a relative of the defendant — that named Brooking as the executor. The will left to Brooking portions of the more than $1 million estate that the Parrishes thought should be theirs.
