at the Goochland Gazette wanted to take one more look back at a few of the fascinating people we had the chance to meet in 2016. The people you’ll see here are not the ones who usually make headlines, but rather the “ordinary” people among us who are doing things that are nothing short of extraordinary. From a pioneering young chef to a singing sensation, we were so glad we got to meet them and thrilled to have been able to introduce them to our readers this year.
If you were trying to pinpoint the precise moment that Goochland native Patrick Willis fell in love with cooking, you would want to go back to long before he became a professional chef, before he was celebrated for his culinary creativity and skill, and before he assumed the role of Executive Chef at Richmond’s awardwinning restaurant Lemaire. It happened at Goochland’s distinguished Fox Head Inn, where a teenaged Willis had started as a dishwasher and quickly graduated to
prep work, when the head chef directed him to thinly slice an English cucumber. The slices needed to be perfectly even and thin enough to float atop a bowl of cucumber soup, and Willis delivered beautifully. It was right then, Willis says, when he saw how a chef’s skill could elevate a simple dish into a work of art that would see People > 2
Those wishing to vote absentee in the Jan. 10 special election must do so by this Saturday, according to Goochland County Registrar Francis Ragland. The election is being held to fill the vacancies created upon the resignations of Congressmen-elect A. Donald McEachin, D-4th; Thomas A. Garrett Jr., R-5th; and Scott W. Taylor, R-2nd. According to Ragland, qualified Virginia voters may vote absentee in-person at their local voter registration offices, but must meet one of the 19 eligibility requirements listed on the Virginia Absentee Ballot Application. The localities holding a January special election include Virginia Beach, Prince Edward, Charles City, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Louisa, Richmond City, Amherst County, Appomattox, Buckingham, and Lynchburg. The Department of Elections offers a number of online resources at vote.virginia. gov, the Department’s secure online citizen portal that provides citizens with detailed election information. Virginia law requires voters to present an acceptable photo ID when voting in-person. For a list of acceptable forms of photo identification, visit vote.virginia.gov. The answer, according to Wanda Hope, is “very carefully.” Hope, the founder, owner and Critter-Catcher-in-Chief behind the Goochland-based Virginia Professional Wildlife Removal Services, has been asked to usher all sorts of animals out of people’s homes –and swimming pools--since starting her company in 2009. Hope is the one you call when you find a snake under your sink or a family of bats making a home in your attic. In addition to both of these, she regularly contends with birds, bobcats, chipmunks, coyotes, deer, Canadian geese, flying squirrels, grey squirrels, foxes, groundhogs (woodchucks), moles, muskrats, opossums, otters, raccoons, skunks and voles. If you think it sounds dangerous, it is. He says it didn’t take long for Willis to prove his mettle. From the beginning, “he took his own approach to cooking more than most other young chefs,” Walton says. “He had the inherent need to understand the role of each ingredient and the technique of how it should be prepared to achieve the dishes’ proper synergy.” Willis still credits the two Goochland restaurants where he worked while in high school, The Fox Head Inn and Tanglewood Ordinary, with igniting his passion for the restaurant life. “Goochland itself was just an amazing place to grow up,” Willis said, “and a lot of who I am came from working in those two places.”

The Freckled Farm is now a thriving — if still small —farming operation, complete with 11 goats, two pigs, chickens, a llama and a bountiful garden that offers the family produce throughout the year. The farm’s goat milk soap, produced on site with milk from their herd, sells briskly at grocery stores and farmers markets throughout the area. “It’s this very strange life, and it balloons up very quickly,” said Kevin, looking back on how far they have come. In the future, they say, the goal is to make the farm self sustaining in terms of food production and income. The barn is already powered by solar energy, and they hope to convert the whole farm to solar eventually. It’s a challenging life, to be sure, but one neither says they would change. “We may be working 90 hours a week, just trying to stay afloat,” Crystal said. “But there are times when I’ll stand there in the field, with the wind on my face…and I’m just happy.”

2017 continued from >2 — Hope insists she’s never been seriously injured. In fact, to date, she’s never even been sprayed by a skunk, a feat she credits to a trick she learned early on. “The key is to talk to them softly, and keep their attention,” Hope said. “I don’t care if I have to sing to it — if it doesn’t turn around, it won’t spray you.” Hope said she has always had a special fondness for nature, one that serves her well in her current role. Her goal, as she sees it, is to keep wildlife in the wild and help mitigate problems when it doesn’t work out that way. “I think that if I can be the in-between person, between the building owners and helping the animals survive, that’s where I need to be,” she said. “That’s my calling.”
Their families, at first, weren’t quite sure what to think. After all, when Crystal and Kevin Neilson-Hall first came up with the idea of turning their six- acre parcel of land off Hadensville-Fife Road into a working farm, they both knew the learning curve would be steep. Neither had grown up on a farm, or even worked on one. The property they had purchased had just one small outbuilding other than the main house, and no pens or any other structure typically associated with a farm. But perhaps because the two are artists at heart — they met in 2004 while both were majoring in Photography at Virginia Commonwealth University — they were able to see the place less for what it was than for what it could be. Make no mistake about it: Ronee Martin can sing. And while she didn’t ultimately win the most recent installment of the “America’s Got Talent” (AGT) program, she captured the hearts of millions of Americans with her indomitable spirit and boundless positivity. Martin, who graduated from Goochland High School in 1969, says she grew up listening to her grandmother’s transistor radio, reveling in everything from Martin the heartfelt ballads of early Country and Western singers to the commanding contralto of Gospel queen Mahalia Jackson. It was Motown, however, that truly spoke to her. Martin set out for Washington, D.C., shortly after she graduated from high school, honing her talent and eventually landing a spot as the sole female vocalist in a group called Special Delivery. It was the first break in a career that would include performing, writing and working with artists including Patti LaBelle and Chaka Kahn. She has done voice work for audio books and television, and has been featured on musician Tom Scott’s “One Day/One Night” album and the compilation album “Sensation.” Pursuing her dream hasn’t always been easy, Martin said, but she said she has always done her best to keep pushing forward. “I do believe your journey is your journey and it makes you who you are,” Martin said. “You never give up on life, and you learn as much as you can.”
Walter Murphy Donates time so those in need receive dental care Inspired by a kind-hearted dentist he knew as a child, Goochland resident Walter Murphy has always tried to bring the same warmth and compassion to his own dental practice. And the people he works with, it seems, have noticed. Murphy, who has donated countless hours at the Goochland Free Clinic to treat patients who would not otherwise have access to dental care, was named one of the 2016 Hometown Heroes by the personal injury law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen. Calling the honor “unexpected,” Murphy explained that he first became involved with the Goochland Free Clinic in its early days, years before it became the large-scale operation it is today. Through Murphy’s efforts, hundreds of low-income patients have access to needed care at the Free Clinic and at his office, where he participates in the “Donated Dental” program of the Virginia Dental Association. He has also donated dental equipment to the Clinic and recruits fellow dentists to volunteer. Murphy was nominated by the staff at Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
One idea for the new year? Be wrong more often By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and ,more importantly, you’re doing something.” — Neil Gaiman When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I typically embrace most of the same ones everyone else does. And so, like many others, I usually find myself this time of year making promises to lose some weight, stick to
a budget, be more organized, and do at least a half dozen other things that will help turn the me of 2016 into a healthier, less stressed, more productive version. This year, however, even while I grudgingly promise to pay some mind to health and budget, my real focus in on different, never-before-attempted resolution: This year, I would like to be wrong more often. Maybe that didn’t come out quite right (especially since I’m already wrong about plenty of things, every single day — just ask my husband). What I actually mean is that, this year, I would like to make sure that I spend more time and energy challenging
the things that I already believe to be true. I would like to learn more about things I have only a passing understanding of, and have more discussions with people who don’t think like I do. I would like to have my own assumptions tested and, in the case that they are based on misinformation, misjudgment or just plain old factual inaccuracy, I’d like to correct them. The spark for this idea, I m happy to say, came from one of our readers who was kind enough several months ago to point out that I had been getting something quite wrong, quite often, in these weekly columns. As Alice Araks explained, I had
erred several times when I referred to the United States as a democracy, when in fact it is a Constitutional Republic. Ms. Araks was, I must note, incredibly gracious in her email. And, while I am a bit embarrassed that I went for so many decades embracing this nugget of incorrect information, I thanked her profusely for taking the time to set me straight. It was the first of many changes to my thinking that I hope will occur as I try to embrace this New Year’s resolution, one that will likely lead to some discomfort, sure, but also growth. And if that isn’t the goal of all resolutions, I’m not sure what is.
Beyond the flashy suits, a beautiful message By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
The longer I live, the more I realize we can learn a lot from sick people. Often their words and acts of wisdom are unencumbered by many of the outside influences that shape people who are not sick and their routines. It’s easy to find examples like Jimmy Valvano who faced a brutal battle with cancer with dignity and determination, never surrendering to a nemesis he knew in his heart
he could not defeat. And there are countless others who perform extraordinary feats dealing with disease and death. Recently, the sports world lost one of those heroes with the death of long-time on air NBA analyst Craig Sager. Sager was outstandingly unique not only in his outrageous attire that rivaled only fellow sportscaster and walking fashion faux pas Haywood Hale Bruon. For more than three decades, he displayed a professionalism and thoroughness

that almost made viewers forget the unforgivable designs from his sport coats that seemed to attack the camera. Sager was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 and underwent three bone marrow transplants and more than 20 full rounds of chemotherapy during his struggle for each and every day. The expression “Sager Strong” became a uniting chant for NBA insiders, and few could ignore the courage and determination displayed by Sager throughout the
years of his battle. But, those who knew him best realized quickly that Sager was much more than a fashion statement, and his commitment to the game, and, more importantly his dedication to family, quickly overshadowed his tendency to wear outlandish jackets. Those who knew Sager best said the premiere broadcaster didn’t need prompting to pull and display pictures of his five children from his briefcase. Weeks before see Message > 7

Letters to the Editor Washington is the right choice for 22nd District Dear Editor, Many Goochland residents may not be aware of the special election being held in our county on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to elect a replacement for Sen. Tom Garrett, Virginia State Senator from the 22nd District, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Ryant Washington, a Fluvanna resident and native of Buckingham County, is running for this position and is uniquely qualified to represent us in the Virginia Senate. He has served in law enforcement since 1990 as the former Sheriff of Fluvanna County and as a Virginia state trooper. He is past president of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association and has served in numerous leadership roles on local and state boards, committees, and commissions. Mr. Washington is currently serving as a Special Policy Advisor for Law Enforcement to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Board as appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Mr. Washington will concentrate his efforts in the Senate on local education, public safety, health care, and economic growth for the 22nd District. As he states on his website, “We need to focus on common sense policies that work for the 22nd Senate District, that do not overburden our localities. We need to acknowledge that education drives our economy: no company is going to move to our area if we don’t have a strong workforce. This is going to be my focus throughout this campaign and in the Virginia Senate.“ Please get to know Ryant Washington by visiting http://www. washington4senate.com and give him your vote on Jan. 10. No other candidate is as experienced and as qualified. Debra M. Markel Manakin Sabot see Letters > page 7

Many special elections do not have the significance of Jan. 10, as the control of the Virginia Senate could be affected and this would have national implications. The voters of the 22nd district are being asked to take a moment to make an informed decision concerning the future of this area of Virginia. In a campaign as short as this one it is difficult to get accurate information about each candidate. Two candidate forums are scheduled. The first is in Farmville at Hampden-Sydney College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 4 (tonight). This forum is sponsored by the Farmville Herald. Go to http://www.farmvilleherald.com/2016/12/candidates-forum-is-wednesday/
for details. Second is a candidate forum held at the Goochland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Jan 6, sponsored jointly by Goochland’s Democratic, Republican and Tea Party Committees. Both events are open to the public and all of the candidates have agreed to attend. As always, there are many deadlines for voting in this election, including Jan.7, the last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person. This is also the last date of absentee voting, which can be done in the registrar’s office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The General Registrar’s website has all of the information concerning this election, including a sample ballot and polling location information. http://www.goochlandva. us/359/Voter-RegistrationElections
much more than a stellar professional career. Every life has a message, and Sager’s passing reminds us that there’s often much more to a person than what we see on the surface. When Sager received the Jimmy Valvano courage award last year, he didn’t liken his diagnosis to the death sentence it actually represented, and explained the news only enhanced his zest for life, love for family, and desire to contribute each and every day. And there were certainly
some tough days for Sager and his family and he struggled through treatments and operations, always with a goal of returning to work and life with his family. Sager’s message lives on in the many lives he touched in more than three decades of

County employees offer an example of selfless service Dear Editor, On Friday, Dec. 16, I had occasion to use the citizens Convenience Center at Hidden Rock Park. I use this facility on a regular basis. I’ve always appreciated the neatness of this facility and courtesy of the County

Benedictine’s Justin Henry attempts a would-be game-winning three-point shot with 2.1 seconds remaining against St. Maria Goretti on Wednesday, Dec. 28, during the Capital City Classic. Henry missed the shot as time expired.
Last second three-pointer sinks Cadets against St. Maria By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
St. Maria Goretti’s Jake Kuhn was a thorn in the side of the Benedictine Cadets throughout the entire game on Dec. 28 during the Capital City Classic. Kuhn was the leading
scorer for the Gaels and was especially efficient in the paint as well as at the free throw line. But, one place Kuhn hadn’t gotten the Cadets was beyond the three-point arc. That changed with about seven seconds remaining as Benedictine lead by one.
Kuhn took a shot in the right corner of the court and it went in, giving St. Maria Goretti a two-point lead. Benedictine was suddenly in comeback mode, which they’d been in for most of the game, but with just seconds remaining. The Cadets drove down
the court and got the ball to their leading scorer, Justin Henry. Henry put up a shot with 2.1 seconds remaining that would have won the game for Benedictine, but it clanged off the rim and fell to the floor as time expired for a 6361 win for the Gaels.
Benedictine kept within striking distance most of the game, keeping St. Maria Goretti’s lead at just a handful of points most of the way. An 8-2 run that started at the end of the third quarter and bled over through the start of the fourth brought the Cadets within two points.
A four-point burst from the Gaels put them back out ahead, but the Cadets responded in a big way, with a five-point run from Marcus Holman then a shot from Justin Brown that gave the Cadets a two-point lead.

Benedictine wrestling does well at Mount Mat Madness By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Benedictine’s wrestling team traveled to the prestigious Mount Mat Madness tournament at Mount St. Joseph’s High School in Maryland. And, for the first time attending the tournament, the Cadets wrestlers performed very well among some of the top wrestlers in the country. “It was awesome competition,” Cadets coach Ryan Hall said. “The number one school in the country, Blair Academy, was there. It was good.” The Cadets finished 13th out of the 32 teams in the tournament.
Hall said that Benedictine couldn’t bring all of their wrestlers to the tournament as four wrestlers are out due to injury. “That hurt us a little from a team aspect,” he said. “We have a huge weekend next weekend for us and I want to get us as healthy as I can for that. We only had 12 guys competing, with two of them being ‘B’-team guys.” Despite the injuries, the Cadets placed four wrestlers and had three wrestlers that were one match away from placing. Henry Brielmaier lost to Blair Academy’s Michael Coliaocco by a pin in 1:30 in the 113 weight class in the semifinals. Brielmaier defeated Colby
Scharf of host Mt. St. Joseph by decision 4-2 in the quarterfinals. In the 220-pound weight class, Benedictine’s Isaiah Jones fell in the semifinals to Chris Kober of Haverford in a 6-1 decision. Jones advanced to the semis with a 9-8 decision over Tyler Clemmer of Middletown. In the quarterfinals, Gabe Slate fell to a technical fall to Nick Incontrera, also of Blair Academy 22-7 in 5:38. Michael Albergo lost by a pin in 4:54 in the quarterfinals in the 120 pound class to Michael Madara of Blair Academy. Josh Yost fell by pin in 3:49 in the 126-pound class to Christopher Cannon, also of Blair Academy.
Blair Academy once again got the best of Benedictine in the 132 class as Zach Sherman pinned Riley Vaughan in 1:20. Vaughan is a ‘B’-team wrestler and not a regular starter for the Cadets, but made the most of his opportunity. “You would think a tournament would flush out your lineup,” Hall said. “But, it creates more competition. It’s a great problem to have and I have guys that are really competitive.” Hall said that he believes that if he had the four wrestlers that were injured, his squad might have been right there behind Blair Academy. “It was a great tournament and my kids battled hard,” he said.

Benedictine’s Seneca Louis drives the ball up the court after a rebound. Louis scored 11 points and had six rebounds.
St. Maria Goretti’s RJ Blankey sank two free throws to tie the game. The Cadets responded once again with a 7-0 run, with baskets from Brown, Dimitri Georgiadis and a completed one-and-one opportunity by Holman, and oneof-two from Seneca Louis. But, Benedictine went cold from the floor and the Gaels started their comeback. A 6-0 run, all from free throws got St. Maria Goretti back within a point. Then, Benedictine had the ball but was forced to take a timeout with 24.1 seconds remaining after an unsuccessful attempt to inbound the ball. Then, Kuhn’s shot and Henry’s miss ended the game for the Cadets. Henry led the Cadets with 18 points, was four-of-nine from beyond the arc and perfect at the free throw line, going two-for-two.
“It was great competition from Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, D.C. and Virginia. We left some points the board, but we were right where I expect to be. Still some stuff to clean up and do better on, but pleased with how well we did at another high caliber tournament.” The tournament was another one in a set of tough matchups for the Cadets, but the competition will get the wrestlers ready for when the stakes are the highest this season. “That’s to get us primed up to hit our stride in January,” Hall said. “And be ready for when it matters, or really the only time it matters, which is February.”
Louis had 11 points and six rebounds, while Henry Coleman had eight points and 10 rebounds. Kuhn scored 25 points for St. Maria Goretti with 25 points, while Amir Harris had 13. Benedictine started the tournament with a 56-50 loss to Potomac School and then had another close loss to Walsingham Academy 58-56 on Dec. 29. The Cadets have become accustomed to close games this year, including a double-overtime win over Hopewell in the TimesDispatch Invitational Tournament and a 68-66 loss to Clover Hill in the same tournament. Of the nine losses for the Cadets this season, four of them have been by less than five points. Benedictine dropped its first four games of the season prior to a two-win streak and is now mired in a five-game skid. Benedictine returned to the court on Jan. 4 against Williamsburg Christian Academy and then will host Life Christian Academy on Jan. 7.
