Commissioners vote in favor of West Creek plan

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland County Planning Commission voted unanimously last Thursday to recommend approval of several items relating to the county’s West

Creek business park, helping to pave the way for possible retail development along Patterson Ave near the 288 interchange. This was the second time the commissioners had taken up the issue, having voted to defer the matter during their January meeting.

School board opts out of live stream Facing expensive upgrade, members nix online service By Roslyn Ryan Editor

C

iting concerns over rising costs and limited viewership, the Goochland

County School Board members have decided to pull the plug on the live stream video feed of monthly school board meetings. The live stream, which since 2011 has allowed anyone with internet access to view school board meetings, had recently been cited by the U.S. Department of Education and the Office for Civil Rights for a failure to provide adequate accessibility to individuals with disabilities on school and school division websites.

According to Goochland County Public Schools director of business operations Andy Armstrong, the issue was that the live stream feed lacked closed captioning, a feature that transcribes audio and displays it in real time on a viewers’ screen. While school leaders could have elected to add closed captioning, Armstrong explained that the $10,000 price tag was ultimately deemed cost prohibitive. see School board > 2

Resident urges schools to help protect LGBT students’ rights By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In response to the Trump administration’s recent decision to rescind federal guidelines concerning the treatment of transgender students, one local parent is petitioning the Goochland school system to make sure all students continue to receive the protections they are entitled to under Federal law. Goochland resident Renee Sottong this week submitted a letter to Goochland County school superintendent Jeremy Raley; the Goochland High School Gay Straight Alliance club; and the Goochland Gazette, expressing concern that the removal of the Obama adminSottong istration guidelines — which stated, in part, that transgender students should be allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity — could cause harm to LGBT students. “While the removal of protective guidelines issued see Sottong > 4

March 9, 2017 In a letter released by the board the day after the meeting, members noted that viewership of the live stream had dwindled over the years to around four viewers per month. “The Board has decided that these funds can be better used in support of our instructional initiatives,” the letter stated, explaining that the board will continue to

Kindergarten registration in Goochland slated for April 20 Parents urged to act early to get children prepared for start of school Contributed report

Children who are five years old by Sept. 30 can start kindergarten in the fall, but first they need to be registered. On Thursday, April 20, kindergarten registration for Goochland County will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To find the school in your attendance zone, visit www. goochlandschools.org or call (804) 556-5630. There is quite a bit of paperwork needed to register a child for kindergarten, and pulling everything together takes time. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to attend registration even if they do not have all the documents because exceptions could apply. These are the documents needed for registration: Child’s official, certified birth certificate Two proofs of address School Entrance Health Form (This can be turned in any time before the first day of school) Photo ID for parent or legal guardian While registration rates

improved, more than 4,000 children in Central Virginia were not registered on time in the spring last year — enough to fill about eight elementary schools. “Our goal is to help more parents understand what it means for their child to be ready for kindergarten, and how they can help them at home, said Rich Schultz, Executive Director of Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. In the Richmond region, 1 in 8 children enter kindergarten already behind in language and literacy skills. This preparation needs to begin long before a child reaches kindergarten. “Children start learning as soon as they are born. Every day, there are teachable moments that parents can use to prepare their child to be ready for school, added Schultz. Smart Beginnings recommends these activities to help children build the skills and confidence they will need to be ready for kindergarten: Read and look at books every day Stick to a regular bedtime and wakeup time Practice counting real objects — like cereal or crayons Talk about feelings and what kindergarten will be like Meet and play with other children their age Show respect and use

good manners Find and name letters of the alphabet everywhere you go Visit and explore libraries, parks and museums Use scissors to practice cutting and crayons to draw There are advantages for parents, children and schools when children are registered on time on April 20: Parents can get important information that they might otherwise miss Schools can adequately prepare for space, staff and materials Teachers can prepare for the child in the classroom For more information about kindergarten registration and what to bring on April 20, parents can visit www. SmartBeginningsRVA.org or dial the phone number “2-1-1 and find information specific to each school division. The number 2-1-1 connects to trained professionals who provide free information on available health and human services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is a public-private partnership working to enhance the quality of early care and learning for young children in the Richmond region so that they are ready to succeed in school and in life. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

The World Wide Web: A true love story By Roslyn Ryan Editor

It’s taken quite a bit of time — and a lot of soul/searching — but I think I am finally ready to admit to the world what I have known for some time in my heart. I am in love ... with the internet. I love it with the kind of blind devotion that allows one to overlook the obvious shortcomings (pop-up ads, fake news, etc.) and focus only on the good things. The other day, for example, I fixed the broken light over my stove, purchased baseball tickets, and learned the most popular

name for baby girls in the US in 1979 (Jennifer). And that was in just a few hours. I was in college when we met — we were both so young. We would hang out after class, taking things slowly (we only had dial-up back then), and learning about each other. I learned that the internet knew an awful lot about an awful lot of stuff. It learned about my theory (still not proven) that clicking on a link 37 times will somehow make it open faster. The truth is, over the years, the internet and I have formed an indelible bond. It gives me directions,

recipes, and the ammunition to win arguments about things I would otherwise know nothing about (such as the fact that there really are that many 37-year-old Jennifers walking around). I could not begin to estimate how I would make it through my day without it. I no longer own any cookbooks. I haven’t used a paper map in years. If you, like me, are someone who never runs out of things to wonder about, the internet is your passport to nirvana. I bring this up today, in part, because my beloved paramour is celebrating a birthday next week. Yep — on March 12, the World Wide

Web will turn 28 years old. I also mention my deep love and appreciation for the internet because there are still plenty of those living among us in Goochland who do not enjoy the same unencumbered access that I do. And they are missing out on entertainment, education and business opportunities because of it. I know that county leaders can’t wave a magic wand and instantly bring high speed internet access to everyone in the county. But it is certainly a goal worth striving for. Maybe someday, in the near future, we’ll all be able to share the love.

Benefits of meditation getting more attention By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I once took a feature writing course where the professor employed what some would consider a strange technique to prepare the class for the upcoming session. We spent the entirety of the first class learning how to meditate and focus our energy in a single beam that, in theory, would translate to brilliant transmissions of enlightenment to the awaiting pen and paper. I must admit I was a bit skepti-

cal at first, but, after a few sessions, I realized that controlled breathing and meditation could affect my overall sense of being. As the professor promised, the words seemed to flow with less friction once I took five minutes to focus on the task. So, it was decades ago that I discovered my happy place — a destination in my mind that supplies a soothing form of therapy for a mind that is often too full of thoughts. Once the class ended, I pledged to continue a pursuit of further understanding of the powers of

meditation, but, like many other long term goals, I soon ignored the good professor’s advice, and returned to life without meditation. But, it’s never too late and the magic of meditation and its benefits are not designed for just one age group, a certain sex or a specified ethnic group. It works for everyone. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one enthralled with the possibilities of deep thought and consciously applied breathing. In a recently completed study, researchers at the

University of Oregon have recreated human chemical brain reactions to meditation in mice. I’m not qualified to give you the scientific details, but lab results indicate mice with the genetically altered meditation genes experience the same positive benefits of meditation as that of their human counterparts. Subjective research has echoed those same results with years of human studies that have actually identified specific areas of the brain see Meditation > 7

Letter to the Editor County’s LGBT student population should be protected Dear Editor, We, the undersigned parents, caregivers, and friends to students in Goochland County, write to express our support for the mental health and well-being of our lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth population. While the removal of protective guidance issued by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education does not usurp rights granted under the Constitution or Title IX, we are concerned about potential negative consequences that may result. Recent research shows that LGB students are four times as likely as their straight peers to attempt suicide. For transsexual students, the risk is even greater: 92% of individuals studied by the 2015 Transgender Survey report having attempted suicide before the age of 25. There is reason to believe, however, that the protection of individual legal rights positively affects outcome for LGBT youth. A 17-year study by Johns Hopkins University, published in 2017, shows a 7 percent reduction in suicide attempts by LGBT teens in states where marriage equality was made legal. We acknowledge our shared responsibility, as members of the Goochland county community, to address this crisis within the LGBT student population by stating, unequivocally: The mental health and wellbeing of LGBT students matters. We stand in solidarity with them. We assert that their rights to equality and human dignity, as defined by federal law, supersede state’s rights, and the dissent of individuals in this matter. We extend our appreciation to Goochland County Public Schools for their ongoing commitment to see Letter > page 7

some would consider reading a form of meditation. Others would question the positive results of either. “The more I read, the more I meditate; and the more I acquire, the more I am enabled to affirm that I know nothing.” – Voltaire. But he might be surprised at that group of enlightened mice in Eugene, Oregon, and the peace and tranquility they’ve discovered with a few minutes

of meditation. The study not only confirms the already known positive benefits of meditation, but opens the door for scientists to examine the basic chemistry of how meditation affects and benefits the brain. The ensuing studies could produce benefits that could make life easier and more peaceful for more than a few men and women … and maybe a few mice.

As the years progress, I find myself depending on meditation on a more frequent basis, and it seems to be effective the more I practice. I must confess I’m not well versed on the nuts and bolts of the process, and often return to the simple instructions provided by that professor. Point is, 9 out of 10 times it works! It’s almost magical how a few minutes of mental discipline can transform my state of mind and improve the quality of my day. I only wished I used the method on a more regular basis, and, often, it’s a technique used when it’s needed. Milton said, “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heav’n of hell, a hell of heav’n.” A good book can offer the same escape for me and also has the power to transform or transport the mind. Goochland’s Zach Gordon (17) tries to beat Powhatan goalkeeper Austin Palmore during the scrimmage Monday between the two teams. Gordon’s shot would get deflected and Nick Lowery would score the goal off the ensuing deflection.

Bulldogs boys soccer gets first taste of action By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It has been a long year since the last time the Goochland boys soccer team was on the pitch. But, on March 6 at Powhatan High School, the Bulldogs were back in action

in their first scrimmage of their season against the Indians. First-year head coach Jaime Lopez said that it was good to get the players out on the field and see what he’s got to work with. “They’ve got a lot of work ahead of them,” he said. “It’s the first year coaching them.

We’re going to get them there. This is just to see what we need to do, work on, and get better on.” Last season, the Bulldogs went 10-4 overall. Goochland stumbled a bit in the playoffs as they fell to Prince Edward in the Conference 34 championship game 6-2 and then faced

a tough test against Maggie Walker in the opening round of the Region 2A East tournament, which was a 3-0 win in favor of the Green Dragons. This season, Goochland will look to rebound and do it with some experienced players on the field. Bryan Escalera, Frankie

Ortega, Jesus Barbosa Camarillo, Omar IbarraBalderas and Saul Marentes are the five seniors on the roster and some of the immediate leaders on the roster. “We’ve got a couple options,” Lopez said in terms of leaders. “I’ve got Omar, and we’ve got Zach (Gordon), but

we have some other people trying to get in there and become captains as well.” Goochland and Powhatan’s scrimmage was split into three 30-minute segments, in which the Bulldogs played well overall. see Soccer> 10

Goochland YMCA swimming readies for CHAMPS By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The final meet of the 2017 winter season was completed on March 4 for the Goochland YMCA Manta Rays swim team. Now, the 39 swimmers who qualified for the Manta Rays can turn their attention to preparing as best they can for the CHAMPS meet on March 18 at SwimRVA.. “We’ve had a great season,” coach Helen Brown said. At the March 3 meet, many of the Manta Rays took home first place

Soccer continued from >9 On a consistent basis, Goochland’s offense was able to find holes and put the Indians on their back foot defensively as Goochland threatened the goal. Gordon, a junior, made his name known as he was a big factor behind the first goal of the night for the Bulldogs. Gordon got a loose ball and challenged Indians keeper Austin Palmore with a head-on shot. Palmore blocked the attempt from Gordon, but the deflection went right to Nick Lowery, who took advantage of the open net for the goal. The Bulldogs would score again later in the scrimmage after several attackers crashed the goal and beat Palmore again off a deflection. That type of pressure is exactly what Lopez was looking for. “The pressure we were putting on (Powhatan was a positive),” he said. “That’s what we’re looking for, putting pressure on the team. It really started working in the second 30 minutes. That’s what we’re going to be looking at.”

finishes. Meredith Eastwood swept all four events that she entered, winning the 25 fly, the 50 free, the 100 IM and was a member of the mixed 100 medley relay team which won as well. Ryan Johnson also won four events for the Manta Rays, as he won the 25 fly, the 50 back, the 100 IM and was on the same mixed medley relay team as Eastwood. Rachel Brown won three events for Goochland, taking home victories in the 100 back, the 100 free and the 100 breast. Joseph Hardman (100 free, 50 fly,

Communication breakdowns and unfamiliarity with each other did lead to some defensive breakdowns as the Indians were able to score a few goals on the Bulldogs defense. Some of those rushes were the result of turnovers in the defensive zone, while others were just shots that bounced Powhatan’s way, such as one high, lofted shot that just went just out of the goalkeeper’s reach. Lopez said that the biggest obstacle that Bulldogs will have to overcome this year is learning how to play together as a team. As far as his goal for the team, he had a very simple one. “To win states,” he said. Goochland will have another tune-up scrimmage today at 6:15 p.m. on the road against Monticello. The Bulldogs will open their season at Amelia on March 13 before hosting Cumberland on March 15. After facing the Dukes, Goochland travels to Randolph-Henry on March 20, then faces Prince Edward and Buckingham at home on March 23 and 27, respectively. They’ll close out the month on the road against Nottoway on March 29.

50 back), Christine Kemmerly (100 back, 200 IM, 100 fly), Fritz Kemmerly (200 IM, 100 back, 100 fly), Garrett Kemmerly (100 back, 100 free, 100 breast), Aizlinn Reikalas (100 IM, 50 fly, 50 free), Gavin Myers (100 IM, 50 back, 50 free) were all three-time winners as well. Sasha Babic took home two first place finishes, in the 100 free with a 1:52.81 and the 50 breast with a 1:01.60. Laura Brown also won two events, the 100 back and the 50 free, with times of 1:31.84 and 34.90, respectively.

Luca Gardner won the 50 back and was on the 100 medley relay winning team, Breanna Gillespie won the 50 breast and the 50 free and Lucas Keller won the 50 fly and the 50 free for the Manta Rays. Grace Kemmerly was also a twotime winner, taking home the 100 breast and 50 breast wins. Emma Ryan also won the 50 free and was on the 100 mixed medley relay team. David Saakian (25 free, 25 back) and Mariam Saakian (50 breast, 50 free) were also two-time winners. Brown said that practices will soon

change for the swimmers to prepare for CHAMPS. “We’ll soon start race-specific practices,” she said. “One thing we’re doing differently this time around, we’re having extra clinics on the start, the turn and the finish. Now, we’ll start to put it all together for their specific races. It’s been a fun part of the program.” Brown said that CHAMPS is a great opportunity for the team. “We’re scoring more and more points each week,” she said. “I think the kids are all learning and improving as swimmers.”
