Goochland County supervisors were talking jobs during their monthly meeting on March 7, but the focus wasn’t on growing the county’s economy. Instead, after hearing a presentation from Goochland’s director of human resources, Kelley Parrish, the board turned its focus toward ensuring that current county employees are satisfied enough to stay. Goochland currently employs 109 people fulltime and 32 employees on a part-time schedule. An additional 78 full time and 14 part-time Constitutional Officers are also on the payroll. As Parrish explained in her report to the board, Goochland lost 19 county employees last year (eight full time and 11 part-time), with 15 of those employees reporting that they were leaving for a new job. see Retention > 3

rom as far back as Goochland resident Richard Verlander can remember, dogs have been bringing both joy and comfort to his family. These days, through volunteer work with Goochland’s animal shelter, he and his family are doing their very best to return the favor. “It’s really the best job I’ve ever had,” joked Verlander last

week, referring to the hours he and his wife Kathy devote each week to walking dogs housed at the county’s shelter on Hidden Rock Lane. In addition to those weekly trips, there is another project that has he and his wife even more excited. Recently, the two were named see Verlanders > 2

The entire Goochland Community is invited to share in a very important milestone when Goochland County FireRescue dedicates its new facility in Hadensville on March 26. For many years, the men and women of Hadensville Fire-Rescue Company 6 have operated out of a facility that was designed to support the emergency services of the past. The current facility lacks dormitories as well as such essentials as showers and a kitchen. The new 12,000 square-foot facility is the first station built by Goochland County using county funds. This modern facility incorporates items that are critical to the safe and effective operations of firerescue services in the 21st Century. There are gender specific dormitories, showers, a well-equipped kitchen, a designated exercise area, and a much-needed meeting room that will be available for community groups and local government meetings. To address the health and well-being of the responders, the station is also outfitted with an see Company 6 > 3

by the county on the site of the current facility. Verlander said it didn’t take long, once he and his wife had started volunteering at the shelter, to see that a new, updated facility was badly needed. The county’s current animal shelter, built 30 years ago, lacks adequate heating and air conditioning, and does not have enough space to quarantine animals when the need arises. “The staff there really does such wonderful work,” said Verlander, “and the shelter they have is not reflective of the great work they do, or of the community.” Together with the other members of GPL, they have so far raised over $500,000 toward their ultimate goal of $1.5 million. When it comes to the family’s commitment to the organization, “I would say they are ‘all paws on deck,’” said GPL president Wayne Dementi, pointing to the countless hours the couple donates to the project and to the shelter. And that spirit of generosity, it seems, doesn’t stop with them. Last Christmas, the couple’s son Justin — a star pitcher for the Detroit Tigers baseball team and his fiancée, celebrated model and actress Kate Upton, presented them with a $25,000 donation to Goochland Pet Lovers. “I’ll tell you, it sure felt like the best Christmas present ever,” said Richard of the gift. “When they gave that to us, there was not a dry eye in the house.” To Richard Verlander, the opening of the new facility will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Goochland’s pets — and pet lovers — alike. “Our hope is that this is really going to evolve into something more than bricks and mortar,” Verlander said. “We’ve got a big vision for this place”

Goochland rattled by 2.3 magnitude quake By Roslyn Ryan Editor

They felt it in Crozier, and in Oilville, and residents near the intersection of Broad Street and Fairground Road definitely knew something unusual was going on. At approximately 10:10 p.m. last Sunday, March 12, county residents

were jolted by a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to have occurred at a depth of 11.6 kilometers. According to a release issued by the county on Monday morning, no instances of injuries or damages resulting from the earthquake had been reported, but county officials and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) were urging residents to check their homes and property for any visual or hidden damages, paying close attention to foundations, chimneys, and sheetrock. continued from >1 That made for a turnover rate of just over 14 percent, which was the second highest in the region (Powhatan led the category with 16.6 percent). Looking at ways to help improve retention, Parrish told the board that the county will move the health care plan start date from October to July, which will make open enrollment more convenient for teachers. There will also be no health insurance rate increase in 2017. Parrish said her office continues to examine compen-

sation packages with an eye toward making sure Goochland is offering competitive salaries and benefits, and noted that government employees were able to receive a 2 percent merit increase last year. Parrish also said that her department is asking for $408,000 in the coming fiscal year to allow them to make salary adjustments. With 57 percent of the general fund balance going to salary and benefits, Parrish said, retention is critical. “Our most expensive assets walk out the door every night,” she pointed out, “and it is our job to get them back in the morning.” County administrator

John Budesky agreed that it is important to provide competitive salaries and benefits, though he cautioned that, in reality, employees in smaller counties like Goochland tend to “wear more hats.” “So it’s possible that some folks in Goochland do what three or four different people do in other localities,” Budesky said. “But if you’re comparing like jurisdictions, it’s not unfair to question and look at these issues as they arise.” In response to District 1 representative Susan Lascolette’s observation that it wasn’t feasible to ask Goochland to pay what larger communities like Chesterfield or Henrico could afford to pay, Budesky urged

board members to consider where many county employees live. Henrico and Chesterfield are bigger, Budesky said, “but that’s where a lot of our employees drive in from every day, and they have a choice to work for Henrico County or Goochland County. “We probably are not ever going to be able to pay on par with Henrico County,” he continued, “but I dare say a director here is no less talented than a director in Henrico County, and a custodian is no less talented here than in Henrico County. We need to look at where our employees are coming from and make sure this is a reasonable market.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

In ‘real life’ most of us likely not that different By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Like most people, I don’t relish standing in line at the post office — or the bank, or the grocery store, or pretty much anywhere for that matter. I’m definitely not the kind to huff and puff and carry on as if I am on my way to deliver an organ for transplant and the three people in front of me at the deli counter are delaying a life-saving surgery. But I wouldn t say I am among the most patient people on Earth, either. Fortunately, at least a handful of times, being stuck in a line with nothing to do but twiddle my

thumbs or count the floor tiles has allowed me to catch a glimpse of something I might not have taken the time to notice otherwise. Case in point: last week, while waiting in line to pick up some mail, I couldn’t help but notice the two people who were being waited on at the service windows. On the left was a white woman dressed about as conservatively as one could be, from the kerchief covering her hair and her homesewn dress, to her sturdy but otherwise nondescript shoes. On the right was a woman who could not, I suppose, have looked much more different than the first. Covered from head to toe in tattoos (one of which seemed to suggest

that she was originally from the Caribbean), she wore a dress that would not have been at all out of place at a nightclub. I was just there to grab my mail, but as I watched the two women from my place in line — each simply going about one more mundane chore in her daily life, I was reminded of why some of us still roll our eyes just a bit when I hear how certain groups of Americans are so different from one another. It’s easy to forget, I think, particularly when one lives in a small town for a long time, that often even those who look or sound or act very differently from us are not that dissimilar at all when you get past the window dressing. We

all understand love, and we all get angry. Most of us know what it’s like to lose someone you love, or to work hard for something you didn’t get. We all know pain, boredom, and regret. And we all have to go to the post office. I didn’t, unfortunately, get a chance to talk to either of the women I saw that day, so I couldn’t tell you much more than I have here. But I suspect that if I’d had the chance to talk to either of them, the three of us would have had far more in common than we would have guessed at first. Who knows, it could have been the start of a wonderful friendship. And it would have made waiting in that darn line totally worth it.

Parlez-vous francais? A new slant on French cuisine By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

If there’s a project due the next day in one of my children’s’ classes, I’m always the last to know about it. I’ve grown tired of my same old diatribe about how we need to plan things in a timely manner and make sure we don’t leave things for the last minute, but it seems so old and ineffective I hardly bother

anymore. And every parent knows these unfortunate surprises always fall at the most inopportune of times, and often involve late nights and frayed nerves. And, so it was a couple of weeks ago when Emma informed me of a French project scheduled many weeks ago that required students to cook a three-course French meal with authentic ingredients. Now I took a couple of years of

French in high school. Problem is, most of it was in French I. I’ve also been to France when I landed a photography assignment in Monte Carlo. A local television station escorted its top advertisers to the Cote d’Azur for a week of sun and fun to show their appreciation for their generous contracts. While the assignment was almost too good to be true, I was immediately worried that my less than adventurous eating habits

would be challenging in a world with high class cuisine and meals served in numerous rounds. I survived by recalling one of the French words I did remember, and I searched every menu for one word: boeuf. On almost every occasion, my order resulted in some form of beef, usually a nice filet. Letter to the Editor Resident wants a better process for recognizing donors Dear Editor, In January of 2011 my mother, Frances Alvis, passed away. Since Centerville Co. 3 had transported her to the hospital when she had fractured an ankle three years earlier, my family and I thought we would show our appreciation by having any contributions made in her memory to go to Company 3. In 2011, I had difficulty obtaining a list from the treasurer at Co. 3 of those who had made donations in our mother’s memory. I had to jump hurdles in order to get a list so that I could thank those who had made donations. Six months later, while visiting a funeral home located in the West End, someone pulled me aside and asked if I had been notified that they had made a contribution in Mother’s memory. They had never received a letter from Co. 3 and they wondered if I had been notified of the contribution. I had not. Can you imagine how embarrassed I was? I then wondered how many other people had made donations that went unrecognized. Fast forward to January of this year when my husband, Paul, passed away. Remembering the trouble I had encountered in 2011, my daughters and I thought that in 6 years time, perhaps at Co. 3 had changed and so we decided to have contributions made to both American Legion Post 215 and Co. 3. Well, nothing has changed. Contributions were mailed to P.O. Box 247, Goochland for Co. 3 as I was told to do. On Feb. 4, I received a list of donors; on Feb. 24, I received another list. Knowing that my sister had written a check to Co. 3 on Jan. 25, and her name was not see Letters > page 7

Ask Fern

Dear Mindful Mover, Your timing could not be better as just last week I helped my 90 year old Auntie make a similar transition. Like you, my goal was aimed at cheering up her new place so that it would feel less sterile and be as cozy as the home she left. My first order of business was to phone a few of her closest friends to remind them that although she would still be joining them at church and at bridge group, visits from them to her new home would be the most needed

and welcome sight. While there wasn’t much space to work with, I thought of a variety of specialty items that would be meaningful and functional, and I am happy to share them with you. Consider monogrammed towels, sheets and a matching bath mat, or a lovely orchid, as housewarming gifts. These will personalize and brighten the new digs in a beautiful way. Family photos arranged in a collage frame will keep all of her favorite memories in sight without absorbing too much wall space. A wreath on the front door with the resident’s name can be a bright “welcome home” from outings, especially if it is interchangeable to celebrate the seasons. For example, flowers tucked into the wreath in spring could be switched out for miniature beach ornaments in the summer. In fall and winter months you could insert pinecones and even tie in some pine- or cinnamon-scented potpourri. A new wall calendar to assist in navigating the new schedule that always follows such a move would be a great help to your family member. Another idea is to fill a basket with fresh fruit, healthful snacks, sugar-free chocolates and mini

Helping seniors feel at home after move Dear Fern, My husband and I recently helped his grandmother move from her three-bedroom home into an apartment building designed specifically for seniors who want to continue living independently but need some help from time to time. Her new place is spacious and clean, with lots of light, but it is also just a bit sterile-looking right now. She does have a few pieces of furniture that moved with her, but I was hoping you could offer a few suggestions for making the space feel a little more cozy. Anything you could suggest would be much appreciated!

bottled waters. You could replenish the basket each time you visit. A new nightgown, robe and slippers, or a loungewear set wrapped up in a gorgeous white box with a bright yellow bow would be a wonderful birthday present. This would certainly come in handy as there may be more visitors and medical personnel in and out of her new place and she’ll want to look presentable at all times. To keep small quarters smelling fresh, I suggest a care package brimming with lotion, powder, and hand and bath soaps. Lastly, for all of my readers, I would like to add here that there are many elderly people making this transition every day, many of whom have no family or friends to help them through this major adjustment phase. You don’t have to know them to volunteer your time and make a difference in their lives. It’s as easy as finding a local nursing home and asking who might need your friendly smile, a supportive hug or an encouraging word. Get the whole family involved. Get your community involved. Pass the love! Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@goochlandgazette.com.

was a challenging week but I returned stateside without opening the box of crackers and jar of peanut butter I’d packed as a last resort against starvation. So, I only knew one French meal and that as filet de boeuf, or filet mignon as we know it. Oddly enough, if you order filet mignon in France you usually get pork, but I digress. We cooked Ratatouille for the side dish and prepared a fruit-filled custard tart for desert. That final step offered its own brand of defeat as we attempted and threw out several batches of custard that didn’t seem yummy. Finally, as the clock ticked closer to bedtime, we substituted the custard with ice cream and decorated it with fruit. Finally finished, you say, but a good parent knows you are never finished and there’s always one more surprise in store for tired and weary

fathers. We needed a drink to accompany the meal, preferably a French concoction that looked frothy and had a fancy name. But, it was too late for translations, so we decided on café mocha. As I whisked the milk into a bubbly mess, I poured it on a cup of instant coffee, and, voila, we had something that resembled a French treat, at least by some stretch of the imagination. I’m not sure how Emma did on the project. The jury is still out with the grade, but — if there’s any credit awarded for effort — I hope she passes. And I’ll pay a little more attention to the menu and try to expand my dietary quests to include more adventurous and foreign-sounding dishes in an effort to be better equipped for the next assignment in world cuisine. Will I be prepared for that next project that comes with a quickly approaching deadline? Not a chance!

A wreath on the door with the resident’s name can be a bright “welcome home” from outings, especially if it is interchangeable to celebrate the seasons. Letter continued from >6 included on this list, I made a call to Kelly Jones, a part-time employee who, I understand, works for the Goochland Fire Board. A day or so later, Jones calls, wants to know the name, etc. When she calls back, she has found a similar name who I was pretty sure had not made a contribution. Calls to Jones and Elizabeth Haney, treasurer

at Co. 3, went back and forth. I received another list dated March 8, two months later, with my sister’s name along with another name. Jones said the check my sister wrote on Jan. 25 was deposited eight days later, which to my way of thinking should have been included on the Feb.24 list. (In contrast, John Myers who is not a paid finance officer for Post 215 had his list to me on Jan. 23.)

I did talk with Chief William MacKay who told me contributions do not go through the county, but rather through the Goochland Fire Board. He said he would get the president of the Fire Board, Steven Creasey, to call me. Steven did call and left a message as I was out. But, I wasn’t doing any more talking. l had talked out. I wanted action. Two months turn-around time to thank someone for

donating in someone’s memory or any other important event is just not acceptable. It’s an embarrassment and these delays need to be promptly corrected. There has to be a better and more efficient way to do things. To you people out there who have had similar situations with Fire-Rescue, this is for you, too! Ann A. James Goochland

Local 4-H camp offers children chance to connect with nature Contributed report

Imagine the perfect summer camp experience. Would you want to try your hand as an archer? Perhaps you’d prefer to build and test your own rockets, or spend your afternoon learning to canoe, sail, or stand up paddleboard with some new friends? Would you like to paint, draw, journal, or craft while the sun sets behind you over the James River? Stop dreaming of a perfect summer camp, and take part in Goochland 4-H’s Junior Summer Camp! This summer, Goochland County 4-H’ers will learn how to relate to the natural world and their peers through 4-H camp at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center in

Williamsburg. Using handson activities, 4-H campers acquire valuable life skills, such as taking care of their belongings; sharing tasks, taking responsibility for their actions; finding solutions to problems; and adapting to change. “Life-skill development helps to ensure that youth will grow up to become positive, contributing members of society – both at home and in the workplace,” said Cathy Sutphin, associate director for 4-H, the youth development service for Virginia Cooperative Extension. “The Virginia 4-H camping program allows children and teens to make new friends and become more independent in

their time away from home.” Through transformative learning opportunities, 4-H campers develop attitudes, skills, and behaviors for success later in life. “In Virginia, youth-development programs such as the 4-H camping program provide experiences for youth that are likely to influence their ability to lead social, economic, and environmental change,” Sutphin explained. Goochland County 4-H’s Junior Summer Camp will run from July 17-21, and is open to children ages 9 to 13. Kindergarten registration in Bay Foundation sponsoring Goochland slated for April 20 ‘Bees, Trees, and Clean Water’ Parents urged to act early to get children prepared for start of school Contributed report

Children who are five years old by Sept. 30 can start kindergarten in the fall, but first they need to be registered. On Thursday, April 20, kindergarten registration for Goochland County will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To find the school in your attendance zone, visit www. goochlandschools.org or call (804) 556-5630. There is quite a bit of paperwork needed to register a child for kindergarten, and pulling everything together takes time. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to attend registration even if they do not have all the documents because exceptions could apply. These are the documents needed for registration: Child’s official, certified birth certificate Two proofs of address School Entrance Health Form (This can be turned in any time before the first day of school) Photo ID for parent or legal guardian While registration rates

improved, more than 4,000 children in Central Virginia were not registered on time in the spring last year — enough to fill about eight elementary schools. “Our goal is to help more parents understand what it means for their child to be ready for kindergarten, and how they can help them at home,” said Rich Schultz, Executive Director of Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. In the Richmond region, 1 in 8 children enter kindergarten already behind in language and literacy skills. This preparation needs to begin long before a child reaches kindergarten. “Children start learning as soon as they are born. Every day, there are teachable moments that parents can use to prepare their child to be ready for school,” added Schultz. Smart Beginnings recommends these activities to help children build the skills and confidence they will need to be ready for kindergarten: Read and look at books every day Stick to a regular bedtime and wakeup time Practice counting real objects — like cereal or crayons Talk about feelings and what kindergarten will be like Meet and play with other children their age Show respect and use

good manners Find and name letters of the alphabet everywhere you go Visit and explore libraries, parks and museums Use scissors to practice cutting and crayons to draw There are advantages for parents, children and schools when children are registered on time on April 20: Parents can get important information that they might otherwise miss Schools can adequately prepare for space, staff and materials Teachers can prepare for the child in the classroom For more information about kindergarten registration and what to bring on April 20, parents can visit www. SmartBeginningsRVA.org or dial the phone number “2-1-1” and find information specific to each school division. The number 2-1-1 connects to trained professionals who provide free information on available health and human services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is a public-private partnership working to enhance the quality of early care and learning for young children in the Richmond region so that they are ready to succeed in school and in life. Goochland’s Tanner Bradshaw (4) delivers a pitch during the scrimmage between the Bulldogs and Benedictine on March 8. Bradshaw is a veteran arm returning for Goochland this season and is one of five seniors on the team.

Goochland’s baseball seniors leading the way By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Goochland baseball team has taken advantage of whatever weather has been thrown at the team thus far into the 2017 season. Whether it was the unusually warm days in late February

or the wintry mix of March 13, the Bulldogs have been out on the field, something which hasn’t been always true for this time in past seasons. “I feel like being able to get on the field in the first few weeks has been helpful,” Bulldogs head coach Wes Farkas said.

Goochland also had the chance to scrimmage Benedictine on March 8, which was a beneficial experience for the Bulldogs. “I thought we hit the ball (against Benedictine) really well, considering it was our first time out,” Farkas said. “We had to replace a lot of guys.

But, I thought our pitchers looked pretty good.” Farkas said that this year’s team will be unique in that they don’t have any pitchers that are just pitchers. The scrimmage against Benedictine allowed the Bulldogs to test out some of the moving around of the line-

up that’ll be necessary during the season. “We had a couple guys playing all over the place,” he said. “When we switch pitchers, we’ll have to switch a lot of things around. We have a lot of guys that are versatile. So, I learned where guys are comfortable in different places.

I had some guys playing four or five different positions during the scrimmage the other night. We learned that our top four (pitchers) located really well and kept the (Benedictine) batters off-balance.” Goochland boasts four see Baseball> 13

Benedictine battles Cavs, weather in 6-1 win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The conditions at Benedictine for the game between the Cadets and Clover Hill Cavaliers weren’t what most people would consider baseball weather. But, despite the wintry mix that would come and go during the game, Benedictine was able to score six unanswered runs and pitcher Jake Lingle allowed just two hits in a 6-1 win. “I thought we played well today,” Cadets coach Sean Ryan said. “We made some mistakes, but it’s early for both teams. Clover Hill played well and just like us, made some mistakes. I was pleased with how we pitched. I was excited about how we threw.” Clover Hill struck first off Lingle, getting runners on base with the leadoff batter reaching on an error and then a bunt single put two runners on with no outs. A fielder’s choice moved the runners over to second and third and then a sacrifice fly by Ryan Spinner knocked in the Cavaliers first, and only, run of the game. Lingle walked the next batter, but was able to cover first to assist first baseman Will Simon to end the inning. “The key to Jake is commanding several pitches and going right after the hitters,” Hall said. “We’re

Baseball continued from >12 strong seniors in Tanner Bradshaw, Jeb Anderson, Stephen Roberts and Frank Mayosky. Bradshaw was a workhorse for the Bulldogs last season on the mound, posting a 7-1 record with a 1.12 ERA and 42 strikeouts. He also batted well, hitting .359 with 38 RBIs.

expecting him to hit his spots and be consistent and enticing the hitter to hit his pitch.” Benedictine responded right away, as Callaway Sigler worked a leadoff walk and would advance to second on a steal during Jack Carpin’s at bat. Carpin lined a ball right back at Cavaliers pitcher David Wallace, who knocked it down and threw Carpin out at first, but moved Sigler to third. Simon flew out to the left fielder, allowing Sigler to score one of his two runs on the day to tie the game. Eli Ottinger reached on an error by Wallace, but the inning would end shortly thereafter. Hall said that not only was he pleased with the manufacturing of an early tying run, but also for his defense to keep the Cavaliers to just one on the scoreboard. “That easily could have been a two or three run inning,” he said. “I do wonder how we would have responded if we had given up two or three. But, answering in the first was key. We were able to move Callaway around and got the sacrifice fly from Will.” While Lingle was able to hold the Clover Hill bats in check for the rest of the game, Benedictine was able to put up a four-run inning in the bottom of the third and added one more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carpin was 2 for 3 with a run and one RBI for the Cadets, while Lingle

was 1 for 1 with two runs scored and Sigler was 1 for 2 with two runs. The elements were certainly a defining factor of the game as well, one that Hall said he hasn’t seen in a

March game in quite a while. “There were a couple times when it picked up in intensity and there was sleet in with the snow and I think for the pitchers it was difficult,” he said.

“Both guys, Wallace and our guy Jake were dealing with the elements more than some other guys. I thought they both pitched well. Both pitchers made the hitters swing.”

Mayosky had a 1.31 ERA and 16 strikeouts and was strong as a shortstop as well. Anderson and Roberts were both strong hitters for Goochland last season, hitting .443 and .333, respectively. Last season was certainly one to remember as the Bulldogs advanced to the Group 2A state final at Radford University.

While Goochland fell short of the state title to Maggie Walker in that game, the Bulldogs are cognizant of their ability to reach the biggest game of them all. “There’s a bit of that mentality,” Farkas said. “We’ve got the five returning starters. That’s real fresh and they want to get there again. We’re still hungry. But, we’re also trying to emphasize one game at a time.

You can’t look past your competition. I think these guys are disciplined and over the next few weeks, we’ll re-focus that as we get into game play and not look too far again. We’re hungry to get back (to the state title game) again, but there are a lot of games to be played.” Goochland was schedule to start their season on the road at Amelia on March 14, but the weather could pos-

sibly change those plans. Their schedule continues with their home opener against Cumberland on March 16 and then St. Christopher’s on March 17, followed by traveling to Monticello on March 20 and then Randolph-Henry on March 21. “We’ll see what we have as far as arms,” Farkas said. “I think we have good depth and we’ll be competitive in all four.”

How to improve alertness during the workday long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.

negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat high-fat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that low-fat, healthy lunches will provide.

Change your workout schedule

Avoid caffeine in the afternoon Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person’s energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night’s sleep.

Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also

Regular exercise improves short- and long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day. Professionals who find their alertness levels waning in the afternoons can combat such drowsiness in various ways. -Metro

Do you know when you’re really an adult? hink back on those milestones that made you feel like you were finally a grown-up. The curious minds at Moen investigated the markers of adulthood, via an online survey conducted by Harris Poll. Some of the most common signs reported by those polled include:

T

Moving Out Forty-nine percent of Americans said moving out of their parents’ home made/would make them feel like an adult. Why? This act may mark the start of financial independence, getting a full-time job and paying bills.

Settling Down Fifty-four percent of Americans say that getting married made/would make them feel like an adult. Though culture has changed, a majority of people still seem to value marriage, which also

often includes parenthood -- another marker of adulthood for many. After all, what’s more grown-up than being called “Mom” or “Dad”?

Homeownership Homeownership is a pivotal sign of maturity. For first-time homebuyers, the chances of finding the perfect place with new hardware and fixtures may be slim, but updating a home can be another important part of “adulting.” Brands like Moen offer kitchen and bathroom fixtures that are on-trend and easy-to-install, so DIY is doable for almost anyone. “Whether you’re renovating and looking for a faucet that speaks to your style, or need a handshower to make bathing your baby stress-free, great fixtures can help make being a grown-up great,” says Andrea Maher, senior marketing communications specialist, Moen. - StatePoint

As the cost of college tuition continues to rise and the job market grows increasingly competitive, college students are giving greater consideration to their prospects of being hired before choosing a major. A 2015 study commissioned by the National Association of Colleges and Employers asked 201 employers, including companies like Aetna, Macy’s and Procter & Gamble, which degrees are most in demand, even distinguishing between the most in demand bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. possible to focus on work and life, not going down every aisle in a store. says Kristina Cappetta, a blogger at Project Eve, which provides news and resources to women. Cappetta points out that many retailers are aiming to give customers a more convenient experience these days, and that taking advantage of new shopping options can save you time and hassle. For example, Staples has a shop online and pick-up in store option, with many items available in an hour, which “can make life simpler, while giving you more time to focus on your business.

Start smart Consider making it a habit to perform some of your morning tasks the evening before. This will help you avoid getting burned out early and help you get the day started on the right foot. “Mompreneur On Fire Ashleigh Blatt recommends doing the following at night: “Pack the kid’s lunches, lay out their clothes and have them shower. You can also decide what to make for breakfast and pack purses and backpacks and place them by the door so you can grab them on the way out. The importance of a light morning is that you start your work with energy and in a good mood.
