ccording to Goochland Fire and EMS Chief Bill MacKay, the birth of Goochland’s brand new Company 6 fire station can be traced to a door — a refrigerator door, to be specific, located in the Company’s former station. During a tour of that facility several years ago, MacKay said, county supervisors noted that space was so tight that volunteers could

not open the door to the refrigerator without moving the fire truck out of the station. The station also lacked shower facilities or sleeping quarters for the volunteers, and was constantly in need of repairs. As MacKay tells it, it didn’t take long for local leaders to realize that a new station was badly needed. Skip forward to last Sunday, see Fire station > 4

Habitat for Humanity of Goochland County recently announced plans to construct another home, its 22nd in Goochland County. The Family Selection Committee is finalizing the decision on the partner family to be chosen as the organization’s newest partner family and homeowner. Construction on the house will begin in early May, 2017. “This property is the last remaining lot owned by Habitat,” said Knight Bowles, Habitat Board Member and Construction Chair. “Our biggest challenge is finding suitable land, either to buy or as a donation, on which to build homes. The more land we can acquire, the more homes we can build for families in need,” he added. Anyone interested in volunteering to help build the Habitat house may email Habitat Board Member Joe Morgan at jpmorgan0308@comcast. net or contact him at (804) 784-8854.

Fire station continued from >1 and the process that began with a door has now yielded a facility all volunteers can be proud of. “This is a tremendous day for the people of Goochland County,” MacKay told the hundreds of residents and current and former volunteers who packed the new station last Sunday to dedicate the new 12,000 square foot building. Located just a few hundred yards away from the site of the old station, the new facility is the first station to be built using county funds. In addi-

tion to gender specific dormitories, a well-equipped kitchen, and a designated exercise area, the new building offers a meeting room that is available for community groups and local government meetings. It is also outfitted with an exhaust extraction system that removes toxic gases and carcinogens from the area where fire apparatus is stored. The process of getting the station built hit a few bumps over the years, several speakers noted on Sunday, but the perseverance of local leaders and volunteers eventually won the day. “It’s amazing,” said

Company 6 District Chief Chris Brooks of finally getting a new station. “I’m just very honored to be District Chief for this fire station.” Brooks doesn’t have to look very far back to recall days when the volunteers would have to sleep on top of the trucks while manning the station during bad storms, and said the one thing he was most pleased with had less to do with sleeping space than with parking space. Finally, he said with a smile, “we’re able to get all the trucks in under one roof.” As local officials and residents toured the facility and

enjoyed refreshments, many of the long-time volunteers seemed content to simply sit back and take it all in. As many noted, the new station was very much a dream come true. Former Assistant Chief Tucker Hill, who has 51 years of service with Company 6, said he was tremendously pleased with the new facility and what it will mean for the men and women serving as volunteers. “After what these people have been living with, now they’ve got this,” he said. “It just makes me as happy as I can be.”

Beloved Goochland bus driver surprised with birthday tribute By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Despite working long hours in all kinds of weather, and despite the tremendous responsibility they have of safely transporting Goochland’s youngest residents to and from school each day, local bus drivers don’t always get much recognition. That changed for driver Amanda Morrison on March 14, however, when three fellow members of the transportation team decided to show their gratitude with a special birthday suprise. Morrison, a 30-year driver, was presented with a beautiful cake by drivers Heather Gibbs and Joanne Collins, and school bus assistant Melody McCowan. The cake was created by another Goochland

bus driver, Amy Powers, and featured a bright yellow school bus and birthday message. To Goochland County Public Schools director of finance Debbie White, who had the opportunity to observe Morrison in action earlier this month as Morrison transported several students with special needs, Morrison brings something to the job that can’t be taught. “I watched with growing admiration as she picked up almost a dozen kids,” White said. “She took notes as each trusting parent gave instructions, she knew each child’s special needs, and she navigated narrow roads with a true eye for safety.” White watched as the students slept or sang quietly for almost 90 minutes during the trip to the

Goochland Elementary Preschool. “My favorite mental snapshot of the day was watching Ms. Morrison patiently coach a tiny mobility impaired student up the deep bus steps,” White said. To McCowan, who first got to witness Morrison’s special way with children when she was driving McCowan’s twin girls to Byrd Elementary each day, Morrison is a true gem. “For decades she has done an outstanding job with a caring heart,” McCowan said. “She makes a difference every morning for kids, parents and any other adult she comes in contact with during the day. She will take the time to console a crying child, or just simple make them smile so they will have a good day.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

As Washington stumbles, Goochland shines By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Last week, as the effort to replace Obamacare was imploding, or exploding, or however you want to describe it, something very different was happening in Goochland. Shielded from view by a recently erected barricade, construction had just begun on the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’ new 20,000-square-foot facility on River Road. The project, which is being funded through the organization’s ongoing ALL.HERE.NOW Capital

Campaign, will finally bring 11 separate services together in one centralized location and help ease the space constraints that have challenged the organization for years. And as our elected officials in Washington, D.C., struggled under the weight of a hopelessly complicated piece of legislation, GFCFS continues full speed ahead on what has always appeared to be a beautifully simple course or action: If people are sick, help them. If people need food, feed them. If people are in danger, protect them. I suppose, in the end, you can’t

blame those on Capitol Hill for not quite understanding what it feels like to have to choose between paying for a visit to the doctor, or an expensive medication, and paying for food or housing. It probably isn’t something most of them have ever faced. And, because it isn’t, they can afford to speak in generalities and espouse theories about how choosing Option A will negatively impact the economy more than choosing Option B. They can afford to stall and obstruct. But while they do that, the small but committed staff and tireless vol-

unteers of GFCFS will continue to work hard every single day to make sure that those who do need help — or food, or medicine, or shelter — have access to it. I have only lived in a handful of places, but I doubt there are many localities that wrap their arms around those in need the way Goochland does. What I can say, however, for sure, is that if more places did, every American would be better for it. And the folks in Washington would be having a much easier time.

Better late than never: The story of ‘Sugar Man’ Rodriguez By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Like many former musicians, Sixto Rodriguez finally succumbed to the frenzied madness of the music business in the early 1970s, gave up the journey and settled in Detroit for what could be described as a humble life. He left behind the smoke-filled bars and small hole in the wall venues where he played his unique blend of lyrics and melody for years replaced by a work-a-day existence in Motown. His efforts hadn’t gone unnoticed. In 1967, he released “I’ll

Slip Away” and landed a minor record contract. That initial success was followed by the release of two commercially unsuccessful albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality. Sales for the artist, now known simply as Rodriguez, were dismal, and the introverted artist became disheartened with the music business, returned to Detroit, and began a life of musical obscurity. But, the lyrics of Sixto’s songs stuck in the minds of many, some in the business describing him as a more penetrating version of Bob Dylan. His words of social protest and enlightenment made

him more than just another troubadour hailing from the tough streets of Detroit. Rodriguez labored around a decaying Detroit neighborhood, working in demolition and renovation of the many dilapidated houses in the city. Eventually, he purchased a government auction house, a residence he still calls home some 40 years later. Rodriguez transformed his thought-provoking lyrical talents to a desire for change and involvement in politics. He ran for mayor and other public offices but never won, and continued what would be considered a normal life in

declining Detroit. Thousand of miles away in a country ripped by racial tension and turmoil, an album that never sold in the United States was capturing the attention of a generation of followers who took solace in his words of wisdom and protest. South Africa was not a bastion of independent thinking at the time — quite the opposite. A society lived under the censorship of an oppressive government and a policy of apartheid was tearing at the very fiber of the troubled nation. see Sugar Man > 7

Letters to the Editor We must use caution when throwing out ‘needless’ regulations Dear Editor, The current administration is rallying against regulations. They are promising to remove two for every one they create. I’m concerned about regulations too. I wanted to build a pond on my property but found I may not be able to because of environmental regulations. But before we complain further, let’s look at why we have so many regulations. First, there are almost twice as many people on this earth as 40 years ago. We are standing on each other’s toes like people in an overcrowded elevator. One person’s right is another’s violation. One outhouse on a stream doesn’t cause much damage but twenty five outhouses close together on the same stream results in a lot more damage. Your right to smoke violates my right to breathe. In the past we might have resolved these issues face to face, personally. Today there are too many people involved. Second, when it comes to air and water, they do not respect political and legal boundaries. We all want clean air and water. Residents downstream of the outhouses are effected by their output, even those far away. The Amazon basin in South America influences global climate and oxygen level. The latest news is that California is now experiencing ozone from China. So air and water cannot be left to individuals who are near them. They are not easily regulated locally but require more national or international control. Third, no one wants big government or regulations until there is a disaster. Then, everyone cries “I want government help,” “Why didn’t government prevent this?” Well some regulations are there to prevent disasters, like nuclear plant regulations, requirements for prosee Letters > page 8

Sugar Man continued from >6 Cold Fact found a dedicated following and some estimates placed sales of the re-released album at close to a half million copies. The wave of Rodriguez popularity went unknown to the artist, who spent days toiling away stripping houses or doing demo work turned down by everyone else. As South African authorities struggled to locate copies of the album and scratch the contents, Sixto raised his family in a hand-to-mouth fashion in the old house that never seemed fully finished. And that’s how it stood for the years between the mid1970s until 1997 when his daughter happened across a website created to find Rodriguez. After initial contacts with the site’s developer, the shy guitarist’s fame was no longer a secret, at least to all but U.S. listeners.

I learned of Rodriguez’s story through the documentary Searching for Sugar Man, an award-winning film by Swedish director Malik Bendjelloui. It chronicles the efforts of two die-hard Rodriguez fans from South Africa who set out on a worldwide mission to find out what happened to the elusive singer. He’d become a legend in South Africa, and his albums, mostly bootlegged, were unequaled in popularity, even by the stars of the day. Of course, the fact that the government banned them didn’t detract from the enormous interest in his work. Popular lore told a sad a story regarding Rodriguez’s untimely end. One account told of a meltdown on stage followed by a gunshot while another retold a bizarre incident where the singer set himself on fire while performing. The two devotees were more than relieved to discover Rodriguez was alive and well

in that same Detroit home. Rodriguez revived his onhold music career and traveled to South Africa for a sold-out concert tour shortly afterwards. His albums were re-released and Rodriguez became widely accepted, even in the United States with network late night appearances and numerous bands covering his songs, most notably Dave Matthews who routinely performed Sugar Man on his tours. The story intrigued me for several reasons. Initially, I found it almost impossible to believe that in a constantly shrinking world, a man worked and lived almost a lifetime without realizing his immense notoriety on another continent. And, there are the lyrics. I purchased a selection of Rodriguez songs and listened to the lyrics that inspired a generation in South Africa, and capture a spirit of independence around the world today.

The lyrics are grittier, more earthy that Dylan and not as melodic as Cat Stevens, but they do tell a message of the struggles and realities of life, woven in a unique almost mystical rhythm. Today, Rodriguez performs in music festivals and venues around the globe, and I suppose he’s achieved that financial success that was always elusive. Somehow, it doesn’t seem important to the artist, and some accounts say he gives most of the money he makes to his family and friends. Still the humble warrior, he walks the streets of Detroit, a man known to millions, and unknown to millions more.

Goochland girls soccer flies past Buckingham By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Although it’s early in the season, the Goochland girls soccer team is finding its familiar stride. The team defeated James

River District foe Buckingham 8-0 on March 27 to record their third win of the season The team’s only blemish is against powerhouse Trinity Episcopal, a non-conference foe that always challenges the Bulldogs.

Buckingham displayed an improved offense that somewhat stymied the Bulldogs for most of the first half, and 30 shots on goal produced only three goals in the opening session. “I didn’t think we played

well the first half,” coach Tom Reid said after the game. “We were lackadaisical and not running to the ball.” The soft-spoken Reid pointed out that lack of effort and commitment during halftime and the girls responded

with an improved dedication the second half. “I’ve never talked to a team like that at halftime. I really fussed at them,” Reid said. Junior Maddie Goff had four goals against the Knights, but also realizes this team must

continue to improve, communicate and play better together. “We played a lot slower than our potential, Our first touches and passes were a little rough, but we picked it up in see Bulldogs> 10

Recreational basketball champions crowned By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s youth recreational basketball season recently ended and three champions were crowned. In the eight-to-10-year-old division, the Thunder won their championship. At the 11-to-13-year-old level, the Celtics were the champions. The Lakers won the title at the 14to-18-year-old level.

BASEBALL Goochland’s Tanner Bradshaw had a memorable game on March 23. On the mound for the Bulldogs, Bradshaw struck out 17 batters in a row in a 10-0 no-hitter over Prince Edward. A fly ball to the right fielder was the only non-strikeout of a batter that Bradshaw faced. At the plate, Bradshaw was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, 3 RBIs and four runs scored. John King was 3 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Frank Mayosky was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Bulldogs continued from >9 the second half,” she said. Goff is well aware what it takes to get to post season play, and said the team has room for improvement. “We definitely have a lot of work to do if we want to get back to states like last year,” she said. Goff said it would take extra effort to repeat those results. “We lost a lot of good players so it won’t be as easy as last year. We need to step up, especially on defense. We have great potential. It’s just a matter of us playing together more.”

Danielle Daly won her number one singles match 6-1, 6-2 and Lindsey Parker won 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. The pair also won their number one doubles match 8-2. Lauren Heffinger won her singles match in a close one, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-6). The Lancers for the best of the Bulldogs in the other two doubles matches, however. SOFTBALL On March 23, Goochland swept Goochland’s softball team Bruton 9-0. improved to 3-0 after a 14-1 win over Autumn Baker won 9-8 (7-3) at Prince Edward on March 23. number three singles, while Heffinger Kisha Braxton was 2 for 4 with defeated her opponent 8-6. three runs and 2 RBIs for the Bulldogs. Ellie Spencer was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, BOYS TENNIS Goochland’s boys tennis team while Cherish Sims was 2 for 4 with grabbed a win over Appomattox 2 RBIs. The Bulldogs were bolstered by a Regional Governor’s School 7-2 on 10-run inning in the top of the third March 27. Chase Bernstine, Max Presley and inning. Goochland faced Buckingham on Jacob Webb each won their singles March 28 and will face Nottoway matches by 8-0 scores. Bronte Sundstrom won at number today at home. four singles 9-7 and Ben Maguire GIRLS TENNIS won his singles match 8-6. In a non-conference matchup, the Bernstine and Webb paired Bulldogs girls tennis team went to the up in doubles and won 8-0, while wire with Manchester, but fell 5-4. Sundstrom and Presley won 8-6. Over at Benedictine, the No. 3 ranked Cadets defeated No. 6 Collegiate 8-6 in eight innings on March 24. Callaway Sigler was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs for Benedictine. The Cadets outscored the Cougars 3-1 in the eighth inning to win the game, after Collegiate had scored four in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras.

Coach Reid agreed. “We didn’t play well the first half, but we came out the second half and looked like they knew how to play soccer.” Even with the young team and missing players, Reid said he sees improvement on a team that has “great potential.” “We’re doing a fairly good job of passing the ball and feeding positions, doing the things they need to do to be successful,” Reid said. The Knights did not quit, and Reid credited them for their effort. “They had a good defense,” he said. “I look forward to a good season,”

Reid said. “We have the nucleus of a good team, but they have to gel and play together… and be tough.” That nucleus is comprised of Goff and senior Madie Panas, but players like midfielders Lesley Jenkins and Erin Watcher will also play key roles in this year’s campaign. “Whey they and the rest of the team are working well, they can really drive the ball down the field and pass well,” Reid said. “It’s just a matter of coming together as a team.” The Bulldogs travel to Nottoway Contributed photos later this week with a match up against Goochland’s youth basketball champions: the Lakers (top), Celtics (middle) and the Cougars.
