Pet sitter, sister found guilty of grand larceny Duo stole from homeowners in Goochland and Henrico, then pawned items for cash By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Two sisters are facing prison time after being convicted of stealing thousands of dollars worth of property from area homes. According to Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Caudill, Veronica Riddle was employed by a local pet-sitting service when she and her sister, Sheila Saunders, began taking items from the homes in which Riddle was working. The stolen property, including money, jewelry and flatware, was then pawned at area pawn shops. Saunders, who had already spent time in prison see Conviction > 2

This spring, Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) leadership answered the call to “Shadow a Student,” with 12 senior leaders taking a day to walk in the steps of GCPS students throughout the division. The “Shadow a Student Challenge” was developed by the School Retool initiative, a professional development fellowship that “helps school leaders redesign their school culture” toward cultures of deeper learning through creating a community of change. hen Goochland residents Michael and Margaret Baudinet found out they were expecting quintuplets, they were understandably a little nervous.

But now, nearly six months after going from a party of two to a crowd of seven, both seem to have adjusted just fine. The same could also be said of the couple’s five little bundles of joy--Ava Louise, Clara Catherine, Camille “Millie” Whitney, Luke Thomas and Isabelle Francis--all of whom made their public debut on Tuesday afternoon during a reception at

continued from >1 and testified against her sister in court, said Riddle told her that the homeowners they stole from would likely never notice the items were missing. In fact, they two were able to continue their scheme until one victim, finding out that her neighbor had been robbed, realized that she and that homeowner had both hired the same pet sitting service. Working with the company that employed Riddle, police were ultimately able to identify seven victims in Henrico and four in Goochland. According to Caudill, some of those homeowners did not even realize they had been victimized until they were contacted by police. Riddle would eventually be convicted in Goochland on three counts of grand larceny and three additional counts of grand larceny with the intent to sell. She will be back in court for sentencing on June 27. Saunders pled guilty to four counts of grand larceny and will be sentenced on May 23. According to Caudill, each count carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years. Caudill said he was very pleased with the outcome of the case, though he expressed dismay that some of the stolen property will likely never be recovered. “It’s a sad case,” he said, “but it turned out extremely well.”

Dr. Lori Elliott, left, and Goochland County Animal Shelter coordinator Julie Lawrence conduct an exam and give vaccinations to soon-to-be-adopted Bodie.

For Goochland County shelter animals, doc a guardian angel Elliott a tireless advocate for improving care of abused and abandoned pets By Roslyn Ryan Editor

After spending the better part of a decade helping to care for animals at the Goochland County Animal Shelter, Dr. Lori Elliott has seen plenty of animals in desperate need of

medical care. But even as Elliot recalls some of the sadder cases she’s seen over the years — particularly animals suffering from disease, neglect or abuse — she also manages to find a silver lining. Not only are they often able to help even the most dire cases, she says, but those animals also often go on to make the very best pets for the families that adopt them. Elliott, a co-founder of Glen Allen’s Shady Grove Animal Clinic, where she still works, first became involved with the Goochland Animal Shelter

around 10 years ago, when she began pitching in to examine animals before they were adopted. Eventually, she was hired on to serve as the shelter’s attending veterinarian. At first, “it was mostly to examine animals that were unwell,” Elliott remembers of her mission, but she soon found other ways to help. She and the shelter staff began vaccinating animals for rabies, deworming them, and treating for fleas and ticks. As word got out about what they were doing, donations started to come in. Those

donations were quickly turned into more vaccinations, and better treatments for a wider range of ailments. It was certainly a change for the better, Elliott says, though she and many other animal lovers in Goochland are even more excited about a far bigger improvement still to come: this summer, if all goes well, Elliott will be among the many Goochland residents celebrating the start of construction on a the county’s brand new animal shelter. GMS honors April’s top students Goochland Middle School recently announced its Student of the Month and Eagle of the Month for April. The students are, from left, Lily Tuthill, Josie Campos-Correa, Maggie Proffitt, Ryan Tremain (Eagle of the Month), John Williams, Summit Caul and Tres Dandridge.

Shadow continued from >1 Dr. Jeremy Raley, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Steve Geyer, and members of senior leadership from operations, instructional technology, finance, CTE, and exceptional education were paired with a student for a day as partners and observers. Staff members rode the bus to school with students, ate lunch, sat in on classes, and discussed the student experience. Debbie White, Director of Finance, spent the day at the Goochland Elementary

Center. “We really felt that we had one shot to do it right, so that was what we wanted to do,” said Michael. Despite some initial health hurdles the babies had to overcome, they are now doing remarkably well said the couple. And while they both admit that welcoming their little ones has turned their once-quiet lives upside down, the Baudinets say they try to

always remember how much they have been blessed. “This time in our lives is just full of joy, and we really try to find joy in the small things,” said Margaret, who was quick to credit a host of family members and friends with helping to make the family’s transition home as smooth as possible. “We are so grateful everyday for all the people in our lives, and for those who helped us get here.”

It is difficult to comprehend just how much work is done for our students unless you walk in their shoes.” Andy Armstrong, Executive Director of Business Operations, described his day

at Randolph Elementary as tremendously valuable experience. “In my 13 years as an administrator, I have spent a lot of time making 30 minute observations, meeting with staff, talking about teaching, and engaging with students,” he said, “but nothing compares to seeing things from the student perspective the way I did as a shadow.” GCPS leaders who participated in the Shadow a Student challenge continue to integrate their observations into planning for continued deeper learning in Goochland classrooms.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Time has come to ‘Make Summer Great Again’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

quick word of warning: this column is not intended for everyone. In fact, if you happen to be among the many Goochland County residents who will spend the coming summer engaging in fun, healthy activities and completing Pinterest-perfect projects with ease, please kindly forego reading this and skip ahead to the crossword. C mon, you know who you are. You are the ones nibbling the inseason fruit and already wearing fun summer outfits. I know you are going to spend the next few months taking long bike rides down lovely country roads, enjoying concerts and harvesting home-grown tomatoes.

You re going to go on picnics so many picnics. And you re going to swim at the pool, the lake, the river, the ocean, and wherever that idylliclooking hidden spot is where people are always jumping off big rocks that look way too high and scary to jump off but they must not be because the people doing the jumping seem totally cool with it. Honestly, I really do hope you have the best summer ever. But this column is not for you. No, this column is for the people who will probably not, if the past is any indication, have a super fun summer. Oh, it will be alright, I guess, but not exactly Instagram-worthy. We are the ones whose summer wardrobes never quite nail it, whose grills sit idle, and who never see our grand garden-

ing plans through to the end (the tomatoes at the grocery store have to get eaten by somebody, you know?). Our Facebook pages feature no beautifully framed beach photos for people to thumbs-up, and by the time we get around to buying a straw tote bag or making a fun dessert with lots of whipped cream on it, the rest of the world is going back-to-school shopping. I know I’m not alone on this one. So, for all the readers out there who get where I’m coming from, may I present to you The Make Summer Great Again pledge. The premise is simple: this summer, no matter what, you will do all of the following things at least once: Visit a farmers market. Ride a bike (a stationary bike does not count).

Lay out under the stars on a warm summer night for at least an hour. Wear something that does not qualify as “Business Casual” to an outdoor event that isn’t attended solely by people with whom you work. Go see a band you have never heard of. Go for a swim. Anywhere. Read a really great book that doesn’t focus on self-improvement or financial advice. Plant something, even if it is a tiny pot of parsley on a windowsill. Then eat it. Ok, all you perennial summer bummers — the gauntlet has been thrown down. Let’s get out there, get moving, and take back our season! At the very least, all of our Facebook friends will thank us for trying.

Lessons learned: A mother’s love can last a lifetime By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 1993, I was about the least likely family member qualified to be her caregiver. Truth be known, I was having enough trouble taking care of myself, the victim of a recent divorce just recently recovered and in the process of putting my life back together. I had a pending sale for a nice

condominium, and it seemed after months of turmoil, I was finally recovered and on a positive path. When I first accepted the responsibility of caring for her while she underwent treatment and therapy, I had no earthly idea what that job entailed, or how much true grit it would take to get both of us through the process. My job at the Post Office assumed a second fiddle role, as trips to the doctor and the hospi-

Letter to the Editor When it comes to Relay, everyone has their own reason Dear Editor, Why do I Relay? My mother, my brother, two aunts, three uncles, and several cousins passed away due to this terrible disease. There are many survivors in my family including myself, an aunt, and numerous cousins, but this is not the reason I Relay. It goes much deeper than that. We can’t change the past or the present. We can change the future. When I was young, I knew and saw many people, friends, neighbors, family, and strangers who suffered from polio, a dreaded disease much like cancer. It killed many and made everyone else suffer. A lot of research and dedication by many resulted in a way to cure and prevent polio. I remember standing in a long line at the firehouse to get my sugar cube containing the vaccine which would protect me. People of all ages were standing in lines across America to do the same thing. Thanks to the hard work, research, and donations of thousands, I did not get polio and neither did my children or grandchildren. They received the vaccine. I Relay so that one day our grandchildren, and all who come after them can have the opportunity to stand in line somewhere and get a vaccine that will prevent them from getting cancer. I Relay so that cancer will one day be as rare as polio is today. If we all work together and donate what we can, no matter how small the amount is, that day will come. There will be a cure and prevention for cancer! Jeanne Grady Goochland Relay For Life

her hand and hoping for a few more words of wisdom. “You can’t go yet, I said in a whisper not sure she could hear. “I still have lots of questions. Her eyes opened only slightly as she looked up and said in a whisper, “But now, you can figure out the answers. I thought about all of that as her granddaughters placed a small flower-lined heart in her hands shortly before her coffin was closed. After the funeral, we sat in her house and met with her old friends, acquaintances and colleagues. In the midst of the conversations, I heard several of her lifelong friends talking. “After Becky lost Jim, she really dedicated her life to her kids, the older woman said. “It was kind of sad she didn’t have a life for herself after her husband died. The words laid in my mind as I tried to sleep that night, and I’ve considered their description many times over since that day. True enough, she did give up everything so her kids could have a good life, never realizing that our family did it on one salary while most of my friends enjoyed the benefits of two, one of the many things I never realized until I spent those final months with her. As for that lost life, her role as mother was the most important thing in her life, and I can’t think of a minute where she ever regretted that choice. On Mother’s Day, I always

remind my friends that taking care of their parents is more than a task or responsibility to be delegated. It’s an honor and the people who perform the important role of caregiver are truly heroes in my mind. In retrospect, those two years I approached with dread and dismay turned into some of the best months of my life, and I learned more in that period than any formal education could teach. When I first assumed the caregiving role, I was not yet a man. On the final day of her life, I was. To those fortunate enough to visit with their mothers in person on this special day, I say savor every moment and inhale each word you hear. Some of them will last you a lifetime. Shortly after her death, I resigned from the Post Office and got my first job in journalism, a late bloomer to be sure. But, the confidence she instilled in me allowed me to weather the first harrowing days on the job. It wasn’t long before I realized she had given one more gift during those last months — the ability to work and make a living doing something I truly love. Never doubt the power of a mother’s love or its ability to inspire long after the person who expressed it has gone. And, I suppose the saddest irony is that sometimes it takes a person dying to teach another how to live. Thanks, Mom!

continued from >6 and how her life had unfolded. I only then realized how much she had loved my father who passed away when my sister and I were kids. The choices she made to get up and fight, and raise two children with no help became evident to me. More importantly, I understand the reasons for her choices. We talked about everything, but a recurring theme was my career at the Post Office. While she never degraded or judged any sort of honest work, I felt her disappointment that I had earned a degree in journalism and had never come close to using it. “Jimmy, there’s nothing wrong with good honest work, but you have a gift, she told me. “One of the saddest things in life is wasted potential. Don’t throw yours away. As the months passed, the trips to the hospital became more frequent and the good days became more and more isolated, and we both knew our time together was limited. I asked more questions, listened more intently to the answers, and appreciated each and every bit of wisdom she produced in those last months. Toward the end, the caregiving became more important than my job, and I took a leave of absence to nurse her through the final chapters of a life I had learned was well lived. Survey to gather input from business owners Contributed report

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors and Goochland County Economic Development Authority (EDA) are embarking upon a jointeffort to update the County’s Economic Development Strategic Plan. The joint-effort kicked off this month and is expected to occur over seven

months. A key part of the process is input from the community, specifically the business community. Therefore, a short business survey has been created to capture important real world information from businesses in the county. Available during the month

of May, the survey is located on the Economic Development website or via the following link: http://www.goochlandforbusiness.com/FormCenter/ Surveys-5/Business-Survey44. “All businesses from sole proprietors to large corporations are encouraged to take advantage of this opportu-

nity to provide critical input on Goochland County’s economic development efforts, said Matthew Ryan, Goochland County Economic Development director. As part of the strategic planning process, a separate survey for citizen input will be forthcoming. Goochland County’s cur-

rent Economic Development strategic plan was adopted on October 4, 2011. Numerous economic development projects have occurred because of the strategic plan, including Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s West Creek location, Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Institute, a Joint Venture with VCU Health Systems, and

West Creek Medical Park. The county also has experienced over $251 million dollars in development specifically attributable to recent economic development efforts. Businesses with questions about the strategic planning process are urged to contact Ryan at (804) 556-5862 or mryan@goochlandva.us.

Take-back event nets nearly 400 pounds of drugs Contributed report

On April 29, the Goochland Sheriff’s Office and volunteers from the DEA and the Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) marked National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by collecting nearly 400 pounds of unused drugs. This was double the amount collected during the

October 2016 collection, and assured the drugs’ destruction and diversion from misuse. The national collection event addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, which is reducing the supply of unused or expired prescription drugs that could otherwise be misused or abused. The collection sites were at Fire/Rescue Station #5 and the

Goochland’s Omar Ibarra-Balderas winds up to take a shot on net during the first half against Bluestone on May 15. Ibarra-Balderas would score on the attempt for the first of five unanswered Bulldogs goals.

Bulldogs overcome early deficit to beat Barons By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Just seven minutes into the game on May 15, Goochland’s boys soccer team was down a goal to Bluestone. But, the Bulldogs didn’t

get down on themselves after allowing the goal. Instead, the goal by the Barons seemed to wake the team up as they scored five unanswered goals in a 5-1 win. “We’ve got to keep our

heads up for things like that,” head coach Jaime Lopez said. “It’s just a matter of time. It’s not about going forward. It’s about making runs and making it count. When they get desperate, they just want to go forward.”

The Bluestone goal came after a lot of pressure in the opening minutes as Goochland was on its back foot and unable to move the ball past the midfield line. After the goal, however, Goochland’s offense came

alive and started peppering the Barons’ goalie with shot after shot. Omar Ibarra-Balderas had the first shot on net, which was defended by Bluestone. Goochland earned a corner and a header opportunity

after a centering pass from Brian Herrera-Cervantes was off the mark. A second corner kick brought another chance for the Bulldogs, but a shot from see Bulldogs> 13

Roundup: Bulldogs win several track titles at districts By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Lunenburg by .10 seconds. Dorothy Clore won the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.04, beating Mia Seay of Prince Edward by .30 seconds. Clore was also on the secondplace finishing 4x100 meter relay team, along with Lanaysia Gonzalez, Cierra Reynolds and Brittany Melton. The relay team finished in 52.14 seconds, just behind first place Prince Edward’s 50.94. Kennedy Carter just missed the 300 hurdles title, finishing with a 50.14, just .10 behind first place Jordan Booker from Prince Edward. In the team race, the Goochland girls finished second with 117.50 points. Prince Edward won the title with 154 points. On the boys side, the Bulldogs were fifth with 52 points. Cumberland won the boys district title with 130 points. The track team will head to Nottoway for the Conference 34 tournament on May 18.

Goochland’s track and field teams competed at the James River District championships from May 8-10 and took home several titles. The girls 4x800 meter relay team of Victoria Spooner, Anna Kate Wirsing, Aishlin Hyman and Maddie Muniz won their race handily with a time of 10:49.94. Cumberland was second with a 12:02.44. Spooner also won the 1600 meters with a time of 6:14.54, beating second place Gabbie Rice of Amelia by over five seconds. Wirsing finished in 13:15.64 in the 3200 meter run, with Marissa Schroder of Goochland finishing second with a 14.02.44. The boys 4x800 relay team of Thomas Fike, Larry Minor, Austin Bruce and Carter Palen, set a blistering pace at the district meet with a time of 8:35.44. Cumberland was second in the relay, over 30 seconds behind the defending state championship relay team. Bruce also won the 1600 meters GIRLS SOCCER Goochland’s girls soccer team with a time of 4:40.14, gapping Cumberland’s Jared Halvorsen by defeated Bluestone 2-1 on May 15. Madie Panas scored both goals 10 seconds. Alex Herrera won the 100 for the Bulldogs. Catherine Ford had six saves. hurdles with a time of 18.04, edging Zhakiyyah Hurt of Central BASEBALL

Bulldogs continued from >12 Jack Golightly was well high of the goal. In the 11th minute, IbarraBalderas broke through with a rocket from just outside the box that fooled the keeper and tied the game at 1-1. Goochland continued its pressure on the goal, with attempts that were just off the mark, either outside the posts or high over the cross bar.

Jacob Hayward had a run in the 31st minute toward the net, but the Barons defender trailing him was able to jar the ball loose and to the keeper before Hayward could take a shot on goal. After two chances from a corner kick were defended well by Bluestone, Golightly let loose a shot straight on the net that beat the goalie to make it 2-1 just before halftime. In the second half, the Bulldogs continued to press the advantage. Off another corner kick, Ibarra-

Goochland’s baseball team defeated Central Lunenburg 4-1 on May 11. Wyatt Murray pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs and struck out seven Chargers batters. On May 10, Goochland routed Bluestone 14-0.

SOFTBALL The softball team also defeated Central Lunenburg on May 11 by a score of 6-0 and is now 15-1 on the year. Catoria Towles was 2 for 3 with two runs for the Bulldogs, while Dakota Hansen was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Ellie Spencer had an RBI while Kailyn Spencer pitched seven innings and struck out 13 batters. On May 9, Goochland edged past Nottoway 1-0. Faith Gerdes was 2 for 4 against the Cougars, while Katelin Martin was 1 for 3 with a double. Ellie Spencer had the lone RBI for the Bulldogs.

In the Conference 34 tournament, Goochland defeated Prince Edward 5-2. Danielle Daly won 6-0, 6-0 in her No.1 singles match and partnered up with Lindsey Parker to win their No. 1 doubles match as well.

Balderas got the ball to Matthew Lewis, who converted the pass into a goal to make it 3-1. Walker Schatz headed the ball into the net off yet another corner kick for the Bulldogs to make it 4-1 in the 54th minute. After Peter Trevor took a shot on goal, the ball deflected off a Bluestone defender and Lewis took advantage, slotting the ball into the top corner of the goal for his second of the night to make it 5-1. Lewis is a freshman and Lopez said he’s a player to keep an eye on

as he continues his development. While the victory was a good one for the Bulldogs, it didn’t come without a cost. In the 69th minute, Hunter Wilms was shown a red card after verbally disagreeing with the referee’s call after he’d just been shown a yellow card. That put the Bulldogs down a player for the remainder of the Bluestone game, which didn’t have a factor on the final score, but that red card disqualified Wilms from the game on May 16 against Prince Edward.

Already shorthanded due to injuries, the red card was not what Lopez wanted to see. “Games like this will hurt us (against Prince Edward) with the guy getting the red card,” he said. “We’ve got a couple guys out with injuries, so we’re short staffed. It’s going to be tough, but we’ll see what happens and see how it goes.” Seniors Bryan Escalera, Frankie Ortega, Jesus Barbosa Camarillo, Ibarra-Balderas, Herrera-Cervantes and Saul Marentes were all honored at halftime for Senior Night.

proper veterinary care. “She has made it possible for the all the animals to get heartworm tested, and vaccinated for distemper and Rabies before they leave the shelter,” Lawrence said. “She goes above and beyond being our shelter vet.” The work isn’t always easy, and there are plenty of heartbreaking stories.
