Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) recently announced that it has matched a $400,000 challenge grant from The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation in support of the organization’s All. Here. Now. Capital Campaign. The Parsons grant will help support the construction of a new building to create a “onestop shop” for Goochland residents in need. In 2016, GFCFS services benefitted more than 1500 Goochland residents through 11 separate programs. In March 2017, GFCFS and the Capital Campaign broke ground on a 20,000 square foot building on the site of the Family Services’ offices at 3001 River Road West. The new building will combine 11 critical assistance programs, including medical and dental clinics, food pantry, and the Clothes Closet. The central site was chosen to make it easier for clients to access all services. “Because of the continuing donations and creative fundraising activities, this grant and

t was an event two years in the making, and one that Goochland County history enthusiasts had been looking forward to for even longer. So it was understandable last Sunday, as the ribbon was finally cut on the newly revitalized Goochland Courthouse Green, that Goochland County Historical Society member Rossie Fisher
was smiling as broadly as anyone in attendance. “It’s wonderful isn’t it?” said Fisher, looking out over the beautifully manicured green space in front of the Goochland County Courthouse. The fact that the lawn in now surrounded by an inviting pebbled walking path — and includes numerous interpretative signage points detailing the historical significance of the spot — is thanks largely to the efforts of the Historical Society. Led by Historical Society president Wayne Dementi, the group oversaw the $398,000 project from beginning to end,

The jumping off point for the project, of course, was the courthouse, a stately columned structure described by architectural historian Gibson Worsham as “the most architecturally perfect Jeffersonian courthouse in existence anywhere. However, as Fisher pointed out Sunday, the tremendous historical significance of the property has up to this point been inaccessible to visitors and even long-time residents. Before the handsome signage was installed, “someone could have sat here for a month and had no idea, said Fisher, who credits Dementi with keeping the project moving forward despite the occasional obstacles they faced during the process. The project enjoyed the full support of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors as well, Dementi said. To Julie Langan, director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the revamped green is not just as asset to Goochland, but to the entire region and beyond. “Goochland’s courthouse square really stands out, and having this much space for assembly sets this place apart, Langon said Sunday, adding that Goochland’s efforts could be of great help to other localities hoping to protect and preserve their own courthouse areas. Solemnity, joy can both be part of national remembrance By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Fast asleep the boys are lying, in their low and narrow tents, And no battle-cry can wake them, and no orders call them hence; And the yearnings of the mother, and the anguish of the wife, Can not with their magic presence call the soldier back to life; And the brother’s manly sorrow, and the father’s mournful pride, Can not give back to his country him who for his country died. Please don’t misunderstand me: I don’t think there is a single thing wrong with spending a day with family and friends, enjoying a ball game or heading to the pool on Memorial Day (and I doubt too many veterans would disagree). But I do think all of these beautiful days in a glorious country should be enjoyed with the very real understanding that they have been bought and paid for with at least 1.2 million lives. Those Americans who forfeited their chance to live long, full lives — to enjoy what the rest of us gleefully take for granted every single day — deserve nothing less.

Trent Goodrich was the best athlete in our neighborhood. Whether it was a sandlot baseball game or a pick-up football game, the talented lefty always was the first picked and the side that got him usually won. Unfortunately, Trent grew up in an era where the choices for coming of age males were limited. Well, at least, they were limited in a sense. If college was not your choice for a continuing career, the U.S. Army offered a persuasive alternative: a
two-year stint almost always ending with a tour in Vietnam. When Trent got drafted, our neighborhood gang didn’t worry, because Trent came out of every situation smelling like a rose, and a few combatants in the jungle wouldn’t deter him or scare him. Months after Trent left for Southeast Asia, I got the disturbing news that my number had come up, literally, in a lottery-based draft system that ignored student deferments. As I was preparing to report to the Federal Post Office in downtown Richmond for a physical,

Trent came home from Vietnam. He quickly re-grew his long locks and beard, and drove around in an MG Midget, almost always with the top down. On the surface, it appeared Vietnam has not changed Trent, or diminished his incredible talent to perform any task with stellar proficiency. He was a gifted graphic artist and obtained a job at a local firm doing what he loved. But something about Trent was different. Somewhere in a sticky jungle in Southeast Asia, a part of Trent had been left behind. It’s something he never talked
about. But, those who knew him best realized the toll that war had taken on this soldier. He told me years later of his experience as a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Trent’s agility and athleticism made him a prime candidate to enter the maze of enemy underground routes and scout them out for munitions or combatants. The work was harrowing, and one never knew what lurked around the next corner. It was a white-knuckled existence where one could only hope that your see Remebering heroes > 11

Bradshaw stout on the hill in win over Barons By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Entering the final week of the regular season, the Goochland varsity baseball team found itself in a position where every win was important in determining the final regular season finishing order and positioning for the conference playoffs. With each game meaningful, a minor bug was not going to keep Tanner Bradshaw off the mound as he took the ball for his final regular season start. “To be honest, I really didn’t feel great today but everything worked out OK,” the senior hurler said after recording five strikeouts in three complete innings in a 12-2 victory over Bluestone. “They lost a lot of seniors last year, so we knew if we put the ball in play we would get some scoring opportunities,” Bulldog coach Wes Farkas said after the win. The Bulldogs took advantage of their final regular season home game to honor their seniors. Farkas said they are a good group that has consistently contributed to the team’s success. Catcher Stephen Brooks and Bradshaw provided a strong backbone for this year’s team, and both are contributing on both sides of the ball as playoff time approaches. Leadoff batter John King got the Bulldogs off to a good start when he reached first, stole second and advanced to third on a Stephen Roberts single. Bradshaw scored both runners with a blooper to
right field that eluded two Baron defenders. After adding another run, the Bulldogs were up 3-0. The team exploded with a five run, two out rally in the home half of the second inning highlighted by Wyatt Murray’s towering double that cleared the loaded bases. “I was just looking for a pitch that I could handle and put a ball in the gap somewhere and score some runs,” Murray said after the game. “The last couple of games I’ve been in a slump, but I felt better today,” he added. The Bulldogs added two in the third inning and two more in the fifth to effectively end the game due to VHSL “slaughter” rules. After a good start, Farkas said his team is finding the consistency needed to advance in post-season play. “I feel like we are hitting the ball better,” he said following the win. The coach said he’d miss this group of seniors, which includes Bradshaw, Nick Ragland, Roberts, Frank Mayosky and Jeb Anderson. It’s a great group and they’re a couple of guys that we are going to miss a lot,” he said. “We are going to miss their leadership.” Catcher Stephen Roberts and Bradshaw, both seniors, are the team’s captains. Farkas said if the team’s bats continue to produce, the chances to advance in the playoffs increase, and he feels good about the progress made in the last couple of weeks. “Some of our bats have come alive in the last few games, and our pitching is
solid,” Farkas said. Senior Wyatt Murray agrees. “I feel like we have a good chance,” Murray said. “Our pitching has been good all year so if we raise our intensity and hit the ball a little better, we’ll be ok,” he added. The Bulldogs dropped their final season makeup game to Buckingham in extra innings, 3-2, so they face Nottoway in the first round of the playoffs this week. Entering the Conference 34 tournament, the Bulldogs were slotted in the No. 3 seed, behind No. 1 RandolphHenry and No. 2 Amelia. . Goochland rolled past Nottoway 14-0 in the opening round.. Bradshaw pitched a complete game shutout for the Bulldogs and allowed just two-hits in the five inning slaughter rule game. Bradshaw was also 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run score offensively. John King was also 1 for 3 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs. Wyatt Murray was 2 for 2 with two doubles, a run and 4 RBIs. Zack Potts was 2 for 3 with two runs and 3 RBIs, while Walker Murray was 2 for 3 with two runs and 2 RBIs. While the Goochland softball, boys soccer and girls soccer teams each have home field advantage throughout the conference tournament, the baseball team will have to be on the road for at least the semifinals if not also the finals. The Bulldogs traveled to Amelia on May 24 for the semifinal game, of which

Thursday
Remembering heroes continued from >6 number didn’t come up. It was in one of those dark tunnels that Trent’s tour of duty ended as he approached one of those blind corners, placed his hand down on the damp ground and promptly felt the sting of a bullet in his lower forearm. He told a story with poignant words that stuck in my mind for a lifetime. For Trent, life after the war seemed routine, but he noticed a decreasing energy level he attributed to age. After a day of work, he returned TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 ESPN

to his one bedroom apartment near Carytown and decided to take a nap. He never woke up. Some blamed the death on exposure to Agent Orange or other chemicals encountered in the jungle. To me, the cause was unimportant. On every Memorial Day, I think of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, soldiers who served and died for a way of life. But, I also think of the ones I call silent soldiers who served and eventually made that same sacrifice for their country. Their long hair and beards stood in stark
contrast to the sharply dressed and well groomed recruits we salute on this day; but their patriotism and commitment to freedom make them brothers in arms. I represent only one in a thankful nation that takes time each year to recognize and memorialize the service members across the globe and throughout the ages who gave their lives for their country. Words fall woefully short in expressing appreciation for extraordinary efforts and heroics that will go unknown to most. But, Trent’s sacrifice won’t go unnoticed — a tribute to all who served and committed their lives to a cause, to a nation.
