For now, those hoping for EMD hire still waiting County leaders say hiring of emergency medical dispatcher will happen in the near future By Roslyn Ryan Editor

It was, by anyone’s measure, a rare event. During a Goochland County Board of Supervisor’s meeting last April, a resident of Goochland stood up during the public comment period, introduced herself, and politely requested that the board raise residents’ taxes. The reason? Like a number of other Goochland residents who have spoken out during meetings, particularly during the budget process earlier this year, the woman was in favor of the county hiring an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. Emergency Medical Dispatchers, or EMDs, typically work in emergency dispatch centers and are specifically trained see EMD > 3

While Goochland has never had an EMD on staff — and the position was not funded in the most recent budget passed by the board — County Administrator John Budesky insists that he and other county officials do see the value in it. “We see it as an absolute priority for Goochland, said Budesky. One problem, he explained, is that the county does not yet have the dispatch staffing levels required to make such a hire. While there are currently 12 dispatchers on staff, two of which were added this year, the county still falls short of the 15 needed to implement

the program. Even if they could hire enough people right now, Budesky added, the current facilities are simply not big enough to accommodate that many employees. That situation should be remedied when the dispatchers move into the county’s new Emergency Operations Center this fall. “We fully support it, and hope that in the next two or three years of budget cycles we will be in a position to have one, said Budesky. Not all are willing to wait. To Goochland resident Linda Moore, not having a trained EMD is putting residents’ lives in danger. Over the past several months, Moore has been on a personal quest to make sure that Goochland becomes the next county to hire an EMD. In her eyes, she says, it’s a matter of life and death.

“Imagine a parent whose child has fallen into the water and isn’t breathing, she said. “Right now, you don’t have a resource at the end of that phone that can walk you through that. A lot of the surrounding counties already have that is place, so it’s not like it’s a rural thing. Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew says he understands Moore’s concerns, and agrees that the time has likely come for Goochland to have an EMD on staff. Like Budesky, he says he knows there remains a gap between what the county would like to fund and what they can realistically afford at the present time. Coverage remains as issue, he said, pointing to the already challenging task of keeping the dispatch operation covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Still, he says, he’s hopeful

residents will soon be able to have access to the services on an EMD in the near future. “I think it’s a good thing, Agnew said, “and I hope it will happen in the future.

The applicants also told board members that they did not anticipate that the traffic at the drive through would be significantly impacted by the delivery trucks, since peak time for Cabral’s operation would be 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and most deliveries are not made until after 10 a.m. Palmore said their research indicated between nine and 12 large trucks — those measuring at least 55 feet — ser-

vice the shopping center each week. Cabral told the board that Dunkin Donuts had indicated it would not be willing to sell him a franchise at the Courthouse Commons location if he did not secure permission for the drive through. After fully renovating the space, he told them, he expects to hire around 15 full time and 10 part-time employees.

In praise of those who keep Relay alive By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As blights on humanity go, cancer is a particularly sinister foe. It takes so many people from us — around 600,000 annually in the US, according to the American Cancer Society--and it often seems

to do so indiscriminately. Every single day, cancer claims the lives of young and old, rich and poor, and every age and income level in between. It brings the physically tough to their knees, and can shake even the strongest faith. It is an enemy that shows no mercy, leaving devastation in its wake.

And it must be stopped. This weekend, Goochlanders will once again come together to take part in Relay For Life, the annual fundraiser benefitting the American Cancer Society. Money raised will be put towards helping those suffering the devastating physical and emotional effects of cancer, and will also

help fund much-needed research aimed at finding a cure. Even if cancer has not already touched your life in some way, the chances are fairly good that it will eventually. As someone who has recently lost a loved one to cancer, see Relay > 7

Dear Editor, May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, wanted to increase cancer awareness by raising money for the American Cancer Society. He ran and walked around the track at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington for 24 hours. Friends and neighbors donated $25 to run with him for 30 minutes. He ran over 83 miles and raised $27,000. As he rounded the track, he thought about how he could get others to join him in pursuing his goal to find a cure for cancer. The following year, he formed a sixperson committee to organize the first Relay For Life. That event, in 1986, included 19 teams and 220 people. They raised $33,000. Relay For Life became the American Cancer society’s signature event in 1994. Goochland County’s first Relay was in 1996. Dr. Klatt passed away in 2014 at the age of 71. He died from heart failure after battling stomach cancer. His obituary identified him as the founder of Relay For Life and said that he “changed the face of the fight against cancer forever.” Today, over 5,200 communities in the United States and 27 countries hold relays that to date and have raised over $5 billion in the fight against cancer. Monies raised go toward research grants, prevention programs, community and patient support programs, detection and treatment programs, fundraising and construction of Hope Lodges, where patients and their families receive free lodging when they have to travel for cancer treatments. As of 2013, there was a 20 percent decline in cancer deaths since 1991. That equals 1.3 million lives saved! see Letters > page 7

Father knows best: Memories of the man I knew write about it. Seneca Creek held a lifetime of childhood memories for me, and some of the happiest summer days were spent jumping off an anchored rowboat sitting smack dab in the middle of the Potomac. If we were not renting a motorboat and heading out on an adventure with our Uncle Dudley, we were renting bikes and following the C&O Canal towpath along three locks that ended at the Great Falls of the Potomac. A trip to Seneca always offered a unique look at something new or unusual, and never failed to mystify. There was the strange combination of summer dwellers in the shabby cottages that appeared perpetually unfinished on one side of the creek and the small rental shops and small eateries on the other. Although most of the trips to Seneca were with Uncle Dudley, every child’s dream of an ideal uncle, the most special of those visits was a day spent six decades ago with my father. I suppose he had heard more than enough about Dudley’s

unbelievable talents, generosity, and willingness to take us to the most exciting places in our small world, and decided it was time for a father and son outing to Seneca. We departed early in the day and arrived at the rental pier just as the weathered man was placing oars in the heavy wooden rowboats. I could have told him that Dudley always rented the motorboats located at the end of the lane, but I followed his lead and climbed in the small skiff. The early morning aroma of the still water in the creek was intoxicating as sudden flashes of sunlight penetrated the large oak limbs that had long ago covered the creek. The light made the white shirt he wore almost seem fluorescent. He always wore a white shirt, neatly pressed and starched, and rarely rolled up the sleeves — but on this day, he did. I noticed his well-developed but normal sized muscles as they worked in coordination with the oars and the waves as I thought to myself how difficult rowing a boat must be.

The small gray hair that edged his short sideburns offered the only contrast to a jet black head of hair, neatly parted and rarely mussed. In the summer, he wore blue suits and a straw fedora, but, this day, his head was uncovered. The anchor made a splash as we arrived in a channel near a small island located near the middle of the river closer to the Virginia side. The only sound was the ruffle of the small brown bag packed by my mother as he unpacked the sandwiches. The smell of home-baked ham permeated the vanilla-colored wrappers as he neatly undid my mother’s handiwork. A small thermos of iced tea provided the perfect accompaniment for a lunch with the perfect location, with the perfect company. We talked about a lot of things that day, sitting in that overused rowboat, bobbing in the calm waters of the Potomac as they gathered speed headed for the falls. I was a small boy and didn’t know much about this quiet man who never spared words when prompted by his chil-

dren. I didn’t realize then that I’d never heard him say a curse word or raise his voice in anger toward my mother or miss a day of work or a school play or baseball game. The only thing I really knew was that I felt lucky to have this guy as a dad, and I liked spending time with him. It’s a relationship that he nurtured early in my life, a commitment he didn’t talk about, only lived. The ham sandwiches on soft white bread were almost gone, so we searched for a spot to throw our fishing line, both of us hoping for non-yielding results. The fishing rod seemed small in his hands, a relic of a past birthday gift. I didn’t know then it would be the only fishing rod I ever owned, but he wouldn’t be surprised. The sun didn’t seem as bright or intense as the softer hues of afternoon painted the shoreline and gently rippling waves. He rowed seemingly effortless across the open stretch that separated us from Seneca, each stroke exactly the same, each oar hitting the gentle waves

simultaneously. The repetitive motion mirrored the way he lived his life with steady strokes and focused determination. Less than a year later, he was gone and a young boy was left with only memories, faint recollections of endless games of catch among a myriad of lessons learned in a short period of time. And many years later, those few hours at Seneca seem more special than ever … and his influence still guides me as I attempt to parent, inspire, and teach my children. On this Father’s Day, I’m most appreciative for having my father even if for only a short amount of time. The memories don’t fade, and I suppose that I am somehow continuing a journey that he began, a sort of continuation that confirms that the departed live on in the lives of the people who loved them. I think he’d like that.

n the late 1970s, Hurricane Agnes leveled the small community located along Seneca Creek and left few remnants of what once occupied the peaceful stretch of land that nestled up to the still waters that ran off the Potomac River. The small restaurant, a hotel and the numerous bike or boat rental shacks and the long line of small cottages that once lined the creek as it meandered to a three-tiered viaduct that opened onto the expansive Potomac were gone forever. News quickly arrived from state authorities with the expected news that the small hamlet would not be rebuilt, the land declared too flood-prone for occupancy or business. The small stretch of creek and the community were quickly forgotten, another neglected piece of Americana lost to all but those who remember, or

County’s top students set sights on next adventure By Roslyn Ryan Editor

oth Goochland High School and Benedictine College Preparatory School can boast plenty of tremendously bright, diligent students, many of whom earned numerous honors throughout their high school careers. In the end, however, once all the work is turned in and the grades are tabulated, only two students will take the top honors for each class. Through hard work, determination and perseverance, the following students earned valedictorian and salutatorian honors this year.

Henry Carscadden Valedictorian Goochland High School Goochland High School’s Class of 2017 valedictorian didn’t get a chance to spend much time with his GHS classmates during the most recent school year. In fact, he didn’t even spend much in Carscadden time Goochland. Henry Carscadden spent the last 10 months as an exchange student in Pontevedra, Capiz, Philippines, a place he describes as “essentially the impoverished third world version of

the Anytown, USA that might be encountered in the MidWest.” With that as the capstone to his time at GHS, the 18-yearold is now preparing to attend the University of Virginia, where he will be a member of the Air Force ROTC program. From there, he would like to become an Air Force officer and possibly go into the field of cyber defense. Among the activities Carscadden enjoyed during his time at GHS were participating in Scholastic Bowl, Cyberpatriot, cross country and track. And, although he loves to write, his favorite subject was math. “In math, insights into the fundamental nature of relation-

ships is possible,” Carscadden says. “It is no coincidence that some of the greatest mathematicians are some of the greatest philosophers. Math is the elusive a-priori knowledge that we so desperately crave in our circumstantial world of physical existence. Plus, it normally makes for a good challenge if you’re not too lazy.” The best lesson he’ll take with him as he heads on to his next challenge? “Take absolute responsibility for the circumstances in which you have placed yourself,” Carscadden says. Emma Doody is the daughter of Daniel and Sherry Doody.

Goochland’s Ryan Bernstein (left) and Chase Bernstein (right) met each other in the Group 2A singles final at Radford University. Chase won his third consecutive title in a win over his brother. the duo came together in the Group 2A doubles state title match and defeated the pairing from Maggie Walker 6-3, 6-4 to successfully defend their doubles title.

Bernstein brothers bring home two state titles From staff reports

RADFORD – It was teammate against teammate, and brother against brother (literally) in the VHSL Group 2A boys singles championships at Radford University on June 8. Goochland’s Chase Bernstine, a senior, squared off against his brother Ryan in the 2A boys championship and won in a dogfight, 7-6 (64), 7-6 (8-6). The closeness of the matches should be no surprise as the finalists are also doubles partners, which they would win over Maggie Walker to successfully defend that title. They also joined their teammates in the Group 2A team state championship

against the Green Dragons to complete the state tournament run at Radford. In the case of the boys final, the Bernstines know each other’s playing styles well, as the brothers practice and play against each other nearly every day. Chase, a senior in his third state straight championship match, might have been deemed to have an advantage in experience. But Ryan, a sophomore, was having none of that. “It was a lot of fun – some of the best tennis I’ve seen in the years I’ve been coaching,” said Goochland head boys coach Eric Schlaud. “I would have to say they have great respect for each other

and actually help each other out even when things are bad. They’d get frustrated at themselves and the next thing you know, they’d say, ‘Hey, that was a nice shot!’ They did that today even.” Ryan Bernstine wasn’t surprised he met his brother in the final. “I was kind of expecting it throughout the whole year,” he said. “Playing him was, I don’t even know, kind of funny, kind of weird – but it was fun.” Chase Bernstein earned his third straight state title with the win on June 8. He said the presence of his Photo by Billy Fellin younger brother has been a Goochland’s boys tennis team posed with the Group 2A state runner-up trophy at Radford University on June 10. Roundup: Bulldogs softball, baseball fall in state semis By Chris Libonati Richmond Times-Dispatch

RADFORD — Through the first three innings, Goochland pitcher Kailyn Spencer would slowly rock back on her heel, dig it into the dirt, and wind her arm through its motion. Spencer retired nine Richlands batters in a row. Five of them struck out. But in the third inning, her motion sped up. Her heel turned quicker as she tried to work out of the inning. Richlands’ Lauren Earls singled through left side of the infield and stole second. Then catcher Emma Crawford drove Earls home. “After they got the hit and scored, I was just thinking about getting out of the inning so I could get my team back in the game,” Spencer said. She limited the damage to just one run, but the inning proved to be the difference. Goochland (20-4) lost in the 2A state semifinals to Richlands (22-2) 1-0 at Radford University. Spencer struck out seven and five of the six innings she pitched were

Bulldogs continued from >11 “It’s definitely been a big part,” Chase Bernstein said. “Like Ryan said, we’ve been training ever since we were little and we just push each other to get better. It’s definitely an advantage to have that.” Starting on June 9, Chase and Ryan went about the business of defending their Group 2A doubles championship. The brothers defeated Noah Hutchins and Gage Cook of Galax 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the state final. In the final on the same day at Radford, the Bernsteins met up

On John Battle’s first at-bat against Goochland, center fielder Ryan Burke hit a ball that rolled slowly to shortstop Frank Mayosky. Because the ball had slowed the throw came late and Burke arrived at first barely safe. Everything after that came a bit easier for John Battle. A sacrifice bunt moved Burke to second base and then Hunter Brown doubled into left field, bringing Burke home. In the next two innings, errant

throws, misplayed bunts and routine hits piled up. Tanner Bradshaw pitched through those innings, giving up seven runs. “They came out and they hit us pretty well,” Goochland coach Wes Farkas said. “Tanner left a few things up, didn’t get a couple calls one way or another. Can’t blame it on that. That’s a good team.” John Battle (17-9) blew out Goochland (18-7), 10-0 at Williams Field at Radford University. The first two innings proved frustrating for the Bulldogs, who tallied more errors than hits in its 2A state semifinal game. After Bradshaw was pulled, the Bulldogs gave up just three more runs in the next four innings. Even when it seemed Goochland might fight back and it had Walker Murray on second base with just one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, leadoff hitter John King lined a pitch to John Battle’s Isaac Deel, who doubles Murray up at second. In the next half inning, John Battle scored two more runs, using a triple and then a pass ball to tack on what would eventually trigger the mercy rule.

Goochland’s Kailyn Spencer, seen here pitching against King William during the Region 2A East tournament at Goochland High School, pitch five out of six perfect innings for the Bulldogs and struck out seven batters against Richlands in the Group 2A state tournament. But, the Bulldogs fell 1-0.

with a familiar foe: Karl Katlaps and Pierce Tarry of Maggie Walker Governor’s School. In the end, however, it was Chase and Ryan successfully winning backto-back Group 2A doubles championships over the Green Dragons duo in a 6-2, 6-3 final. Chase and Ryan saw Katlaps and Tarry again on June 10 in the Group 2A state championship final as Goochland and Maggie Walker met in the final. While Chase once again bested Katlaps by a score of 6-1, 6-3 and Ryan beat Tarry 6-0, 6-3, it would be the only two wins for the Bulldogs as they were relegated to runner-up in

a 5-2 loss to Maggie Walker. “I’m extremely happy,” Schlaud said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better. It was great, they played their hearts out. I knew the singles was going to be rough. It is what it is. They played great and the doubles were amazing. I can’t complain and they played their hearts out. That’s all I can ask of them.” Goochland’s Max Presley, Jacob Webb, Bronte Sundstrom and Ben Maguire all fell to their Maggie Walker opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. In doubles, with the Green Dragons only needing one match win, it was Sundstrom and Maguire

falling 6-0, 6-1 which clinched it for Maggie Walker. While the Bulldogs fell short of the triple crown-esque achievement in the state final, the growth of the tennis program overall has been building, especially with the Bernsteins playing at such a high level. “That’s what I’m excited about,” Schlaud said of the entire team qualifying for the state final. “I’m hoping that’ll help recruit some players on to the tennis team for the next few seasons. We’ll see what happens with that. I couldn’t ask for a better team or better players.” Chase as well as Jacob Webb will

perfect. But she gave up all three of Richlands hits in the fourth inning, including the game-winning run. The Goochland offense struggled once it put runners on base. It stranded seven and had two runners on base twice. In the top of the seventh inning, Goochland’s Katelin Martin singled and coach Amy Henneberger pinch ran Cherish Sims for Martin. Sims stole second and third base during the following at-bats, but the next three batters struck out. “We had a lot of base runners,” Henneberger said. “We just didn’t capitalize.”

be departing the team due to graduation after this season. Schlaud said that while those holes will be significant, he believes he has a lot of talent to fill them in. “We’re still strong,” he said. “I’ve still got Ryan and I’ve still got Max. Jacob’s brother, Ryan, is coming up and he’ll be a freshman next year. So, we’ll be competitive.” Mechanicsville Local Sports Editor Dave Lawrence and Goochland Gazette Sports Editor Billy Fellin each contributed to this report. someone who did not attend Benedictine, but it is a tradition that we take seriously and I hold dear to me. It is a symbol of us joining the brotherhood and more importantly moving on to the next chapters of our lives.” As he moves on to his own next chapter--attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, where he will be majoring in Marine Engineering— Sykes says he’ll miss his time

at Benedictine, where he took part in the National Honor Society, Key Club, Battle of the Brains, and Model General Assembly. Sykes, who also served as Charlie Company Commander, plans to ultimately serve his country in the Navy. As for the lesson, he will take with him as he heads off to school next year, Sykes offers a metaphor plucked from the world of sports: “Anything life throws at you,” he said, “hit it low and hard.” Luke Sykes is the son of Mark and Judy Sykes.
