GFCFS reaches funding level goal By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“I think it is so appropriate for Fauquier’s 150th Anniversary because it has been with God’s help that the efforts of the founding members to establish and maintain a house of worship have endured,” Mabry said. “And God is our only hope for continued growth in the years to come.” The church’s story began in 1867, when a number of worshippers at Emmaus Baptist

Just over a year after kicking off an effort to fund construction of a new facility, leaders of Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) have reached their goal. The grand total of $7.1 million, which will allow the organization to house all of its 11 different services under one centrally-located roof, also includes a $1.5 million endowment. “The Goochland community has demonstrated that it feels as strongly as I do that we all have a responsibility to help our neighbors who struggle every day for food, shelter, clothes, and healthcare,” said Lisa Luck, the chair for GFCFS’ ALL.HERE.NOW. Capital Campaign. “The response through private donations, grants, foundation gifts, and peer-to-peer fundraising to support this capital campaign has been overwhelming and humbling.” Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’ critical assistance programs, which include the medical clinic, dental clinic, food pantry, and Clothes Closet, are currently housed in several areas. In 2016, the organization served 1,600 Goochland residents. “Goochland stepped up and met the goal without reservations,” said Liz Rider, president of GFCFS Board of Directors. “They know the

Fauquier Baptist Church marks 150 years By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Many organizations have hosted lavish celebrations to commemorate reaching their 50-, 75- or even 100-year mark. Members of Goochland’s Fauquier Baptist Church, however, recently celebrated an even more noteable milestone. On May 7, the congregation held a celebration in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary,

an event that served to honor the many men and women who helped make Fauquier Baptist what it is today. According to Jeffery Mabry, who served as the chairman of the 150th Anniversary Committee, the theme for the 150th anniversary was “O God, Our Help in Ages Past, Our Hope for the Years to Come,” a phrase taken from a traditional Christian hymn. To Mabry, the theme summed up the day perfectly.

When talking to kids, is there a good way broach tough topics? Dear Fern, Since I know you are a mother, and always have such helpful advice for your readers, I was hoping you could help me figure out the best way to talk with my children about some of the scarier things that are happening in the world today. These are not things that I particularly want to talk about, but I don’t want to brush aside their questions either. My husband is in favor of answering them very matter-of-factly when they ask about things like war or terrorism, but I just don’t think they are ready for that (my boys are 11 and 9). I want them to be informed — and I am glad they are curious about the world — but I just don’t want to scare them. Any advice you could offer would be much appreciated! Dear Concerned Mom, As parents, certainly it is our first instinct to make our children feel safe. Unfortunately, it s possible that word of an attack will get to your child before you do, whether via current events at school, a news flash on television, or a random outside conversation. While you may have the ability to monitor those influences somewhat, I would suggest waiting until your children start to ask questions, as there would be no good

end to introducing them to violent details before they are ready to know about them. When that time comes, I would explain that no matter what the world looks like today, since the beginning of time there has been war on Earth. I would further explain that the war on terrorism is very sad, hard to accept and even harder to understand. Here you have an opportunity to inject the principle that America was built upon hopes and dreams with a simple concept that people would be able to live safely in communities where neighbors would look out for one another. You can also add that, although there are some people who are capable of hateful acts, we must look for the good in people all around us because their kindnesses far outnumber any violent acts. Impress upon your children the secure belief that they should never lose faith in humanity. Have them make a list of people who inspire them to make the world a better place. Encourage your children to work at peace by contributing positively to society, helping others whenever and however they can-because that is what makes the world beautiful. Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@ goochlandgazette.com.

Del. Ware honored as 2017 Legislator of the Year The Virginia State Police Association recently named Del. R. Lee Ware (R-65th) as the organization’s Legislator of the Year, honoring him for his dedication to the mission of Virginia State Police. According to Wayne Huggins, executive director of the Virginia State Police Association and a former State Police Superintendent, Ware has been a long-time ally. “This honor is being bestowed not only in recognition of the enormous efforts you put forth on this year’s budget recommendations benefiting our members but also because of your consistent friendship and support over the years,” said Huggins. “We can never thank you enough for all you have done for us.” Last year, in response to growing concerns about the force’s ability to train and retain Troopers, Ware convened a meeting of numerous legislators to receive a private briefing on the State Police budget. As chairman of the Finance Committee in the House of Delegates, Ware worked with the leaders of the legislature to gain support for a major infusion of new revenues for State Police salaries and training. Attending the presentation ceremony were Lieutenant Colonel Kirk Marlowe and Lieutenant Robbie Holland of Powhatan. Left, Holland presents Ware with a framed portrait of the several law-enforcement programs provided by Virginia State Police.

Absurdity of ‘Blaze Pink’ tough to camouflage By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In the beginning, when I learned about the bill that will allow Virginia hunters to wear blaze pink instead of blaze orange when they are out in the woods, I blamed the Kardashians. With all due respect to them, that clan is usually my go-to scapegoat when women are portrayed as shallow, overly-primped damsels in distress. And HB1939, with its goal of making hunting more accessible to women by offering them a more lady-like color palate, does just that. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’ll be blunt: I don’t love this bill. My feelings towards it have evolved over the past few days, from simple annoyance (“Honestly, is this really necessary?”), to mild disgust (“What’s next, mink-lined gun stocks and slugs that release the smell of lemon verbena when fired?”) to an anger that burned with the fire of a thousand suns. In the end, however, after a bit more careful consideration, I returned to a simmer and

decided this bill is one that needn’t concern me, particularly given that I don’t hunt and don’t expect to start any time soon. And yet ... Please don’t misunderstand me: I have absolutely no issues with responsible, ethical hunting, and I fully support both the men the women who enjoy it as a pastime. I also have no problem with bills that seem, on their face, a little silly (2017, remember, is the year that brought us new fines for drivers caught loitering in the left lane). The issue here, particularly in an age when we have so many women reaching new heights in so many fields, is not about what color a hunter is legally allowed to wear, but rather the idea that women who want to hunt are holding themselves back because the outfits aren’t flattering enough. In other words: it ain’t the pink, it’s the premise. Please, for just a moment, consider if we applied this same logic to any other area. According to the American Medical Association, women currently make up just 30 percent of surgeons in the United

States. Anyone think that offering pink scrubs or scalpels would help bring up those numbers? Somehow I doubt it. How about fighting fires, or flying jets, two fields in which women are still not well represented? Would pink perk up the numbers of female applicants? Probably not. No, it shouldn’t really matter. If being allowed to wear blaze pink helps more women enjoy the great outdoors and earn a newfound respect for the natural world, maybe that should be reason enough to look past the absurdity of the whole thing. But I simply can’t accept the notion that all the work we have been doing for centuries in the field of women’s rights has not moved the needle enough that we can stop doing things like this. In the end, any company that sells blaze pink hunting apparel is probably going to be in the black this year. The rest of us, especially women who have been hunting their entire lives without much thought to the color of their camo, should be forgiven for seeing red.

MDA camp offers a special week for special kids By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Time flies when you are having fun. For a group of campers, truer words were never spoken as they wrapped up a week of sun and fun at MDA summer camp in Wakefield. The annual event attracts kids from across the Commonwealth who suffer from some form

of muscle disease, and allows these special campers a unique opportunity to live in a world where their condition is not the exception, but the rule. It’s something those of us who walk through life don’t really think about as we go about our routines among fellow humans who have no physical limitations or special schedules. Letters to the Editor Once again, Relay teams proved to be resourceful, resilient Dear Editor, We all Relay for the same reason: Many of us have lost friends or loved ones to cancer. Many of us are helping a friend or loved one fight the great fight against cancer. Some of us are fighting that fight ourselves. We are also there to celebrate and honor our cancer survivors. We all want the day to come when cancer is a thing of the past, like smallpox or polio. After seeing the gloomy weather forecast for Friday, June 16 that would prevent us from holding our event at the Goochland Elementary School track and discovering that Plan B was no longer an option due to maintenance at the Goochland High School gym, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Goochland went to “Plan C” – Relay was held in and throughout the Middle School gym, Middle School cafeteria and High School cafeteria. Although veteran participants missed the fun of an outdoor experience, and several of the outdoor activities had to be cancelled, Relay 2017 was a success. Sixteen teams and over 100 participants and guests were on site. We were inspired by our Honorary Chairs, Delmon and Melissa Clay, and Delmon’s story of his 4-year fight with pancreatic cancer. There were several speakers, entertainers and bands, a silent auction, and team fundraisers and activities that kept the group awake and moving throughout the allnight event. In keeping with our theme of “Rings of Hope – Olympic Challenge,” teams decorated their sites to reflect their “Country” or “Olympic Event.” Young and old alike created Olympic torches using toilet paper rolls, craft paper and tea lights, and carried them during the beautiful Luminaria Ceremony with the lights of the gym darkened and see Letters > page 7

Relay For Life of Goochland had a goal this year to collect $50,000 for cancer research, awareness and community services for cancer victims. As of this writing, we have raised more than $49,000. Members of Goochland’s Fauquier Baptist Church on Dogtown Road release balloons in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary.

A new place of worship was set up, and the earliest iteration was a simple brush arbor where the new congregation, many of who were former slaves, would gather. Among the founders of the new church, which was located near the site of what would become the Central High School

Complex, were Brothers Warner Ham, Shedrick Taylor, Spencer Logan, Charles Payne, Robert Perkins, Patrick Clay, Dennis Twine, Matt Brice, Archer Cooper, Richard Dillard and Robert Dillard. Eventually, according to Mabry, a log cabin was constructed. Twenty eight benches built by a man named Robert Toombs were added in 1893 for a cost of .75 cents each. Fast forward 124 years, and the church is now a thriving center of worship, offering a place for many of the descendants of the

founders to gather in prayer each week. To Mabry and so many others who gathered on May 7 for music, food and fellowship, it is a part of Goochland history to be honored and cherished. “I am really thankful for being able to live through such a rare time in celebrating a milestone anniversary of a church started by the recently freed slaves 150 years ago,” Mabry said. “I am grateful for the support of the members of this congregation, and for neighboring churches for helping us celebrate this occasion.”

It’s a chance for them to feel normal, accepted and appreciated. It doesn’t take long to witness just how special this group of kids is. A few minutes in their presence reveals the true nature of what the term hero really means. They embrace everything the word encompasses, and display daily the grit it takes to fight overwhelming odds and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. And the volunteers and counselors who care for these kids for every hour of the week make the experience carefree and a no worries escape for the kids. The number of people who make MDA summer camp possible is just too long to list, but suffice it to say, it is a community effort. Firemen come from various locations to cook for the kids and every meal is special, not only for the kids but the guys and gals who cook the delicious treats. Goodies are provided by a number of organizations and national companies who know that supporting MDA is more than a fund-

9

raising effort — it’s a mission of hope. Now that camp is concluded and everyone heads back home, the real work begins — raising funds for research and an eventual cure for this special group of kids and the families who love them. MDA lock-ups, Fill the Boot campaigns and fundraising efforts in local stores provide the backbone of the work that MDA promotes and funds. Local fire departments and other agencies will be holding special events for MDA, and the summer is filled with more events and promotions. One of the dollars raised at these events could be the one that brings the reality of a cure closer to home for the thousands who suffer. It also shows these special kids that they are not forgotten, and their struggle belongs to a community, not just an individual. It’s a gesture that is greatly appreciated by those who need the help the most. The acts of kindness represent more than just a donation to them. It’s a sure sign that they are not alone in their struggle. And that’s a gift that keeps giving.

Artist’s image offers message of hope for those battling cancer By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When photographer Tracie Barnett set out with her camera one morning several years ago, bound for the train station in Fredericksburg, she was simply looking to spend a few enjoyable hours lost in the process of shooting photos. What she didn’t realize until several weeks later, however, was that one of the shots she captured would turn out to be far more interesting — and empowering — than she ever could have realized. American Legion Post 201’s Ross Lewis dives back to the base and is hit by the pick-off attempt during the team’s 21-10 win over Post 284P on June 25 at Powhatan High School. Post 201 has gone through a tough stretch of the schedule, with five games over six days.

Tough schedule doesn’t keep Post 201 down By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Post 201 baseball team was in the midst of a tough schedule, featuring five games over the span of six days all at Powhatan High School. Despite the short time span for the amount of games, Post 201 won two of their first

three during that stretch. On June 22, Post 201 took down Post 137 9-5, despite allowing a three-run inning. Wayne Butler led the team with 3 RBIs against Post 137, while Jacob Triesler had 2 RBIs, along with three hits. Ross Lewis added two more RBIs on a home run. Against 137, Josh Reynolds

allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings and struck out five batters. On June 24, Post 201 hosted a three-game tournament at Powhatan High School and faced Post 320 in the first game, which was a shorter seven-inning affair. Post 320 got the best of Post 201 in that contest by a

4-0 final. On June 25, Post 201 and Post 284P put the scoreboard through a thorough workout in a 21-10 game. After all the games backto-back-to-back, coach Eric Mead said that he thinks that the team is headed in the right direction. “We still need to make

some changes on the staff as far as the player positions and where we can get our best batters lined up,” he said. “But, I’m pretty happy with it. We’ve tried a lot of stuff out of district, which gave us our three losses. Even on those, I thought we played really well out of district.” One of those losses was

a close 3-2 game to Post 74, a team out of Charlottesville that won the state Legion title from 2013 to 2015. “They’re a phenomenal baseball team,” Mead said of Post 74. “Those out of district games, we used those to figure out where we can make changes and where we can’t.” see Legion> 12

Goochland takes down Bell Creek 857-554 By Dave Lawrence Contributing Writer

The Goochland YMCA swim team is only in its second year of existence, but it is growing. That growth helped propel Goochland to an 857-554 victory over visiting Bell Creek in Greater Richmond Aquatic League action on June 21. Goochland’s team has grown from about 70 swimmers last year to 81 this year. Even better, more swimmers are actually showing up for meets. “We tend to pick up swimmers who want the exercise, but not necessarily the competition,” said Goochland head coach Helen Brown. “We have more competitors this year. … I’m excited about it. I’m excited about the enthusiasm that the kids have.” Part of the reason why there is greater excitement is Goochland High School’s swim team. The opportunity to compete with the Bulldogs competing in the Virginia High School League in the winter and with the YMCA swim team in GRAL in the summer reinforce swimmer interest in the two programs. “It just so happens that my neighbor is the high school coach,” Brown said. “We’ve begun to realize that my team feeds into the high school team.

Legion continued from >11 Post 201 has three wins in district as of June 25 and are 4-3 overall. Post 201 started the season with a 8-0 win over Post 186 before falling to Post 74 and then Post 89 14-10. Mead said that as of now, the strength of the team is on the mound. “I think we’re very strong on the mound, with about three or four pitchers,” he said. “We still have some work to do in the middle of our bull-

It has grown and the high school swimming program has grown.” Brown also thinks events last year may have contributed to interest this year. “I would be surprised if all the teams didn’t see an uptick in participation just because this year’s Olympics were so exciting,’ she said. “I think everybody got the swimming bug this summer.” Even better, Townley Haas – a local swimmer and standout at Benedictine who also swam in the GRAL – made the U.S. Olympic team and earned a gold medal in Rio as part of the 800meter freestyle relay team. Arguably everyone in GRAL who helped give him an Olympic sendoff last year were inspired by his achievement. Goochland was led by five quad winners: Payton Harrigal, Ryan Johnson, Andrea and Annika Rogerson and Sophia Summitt. Harrigal won the 50 freestyle, the 100 butterfly, was a member of the mixed 200 yard medley relay and the 50 breast. Johnson won the 100 IM, the 25 free, was a member on the mixed 100 yard medley relay team and the 25 breast. Andrea Rogerson won the 25 butterfly, was the lead swimmer on the

mixed 100 yard medley relay, the 25 breast and the 100 IM. Annika Rogerson took home wins in the 50 butterfly, the mixed 200 medley relay, the 100 IM and the 50 free. Summitt bested the field in the 50 free, the 50 breast, the mixed 200

medley relay team and the 100 IM. The team had eight triple winners: Caleb Cardani, Nora DeShazo, Joseph Hardman, Nathaniel Harris, Kaci Johnson, Cullen Parrish, Abby Pillion and Adele Wheatley. Bell Creek had two quad winners – Alex Destephanis and Payton

Devine – and two triple winners: Tori Destephanis and Ava Mister. Goochland traveled to Antioch on June 28 for Week 3 in the GRAL. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Sports Editor Billy Fellin contributed to this report.

pen. We have a really good closer that helps close us out. We have to throw strikes. That’s the name of the game in American Legion. You have to be able to throw strikes.” Mead said that his team has had “spurts of consistency” and believes that his team is getting better as they work their way through the season. “This is all about where you get at the end,” he said. “You want the momentum at the end, not at the beginning. Now, our goal is to continue with the momentum we got and make it to the end. It’s about the

district tournament, that’s where we need to get to.” Post 201 was scheduled to play against Post 361 on June 26 and against Post 175 on June 27 before a break prior to another home game on July 1 against Post 284B. One perk for the team is that all three of those games are at Powhatan. “It’s a lot about heart and desire,” Mead said. “When you’re playing this many games, your body breaks down, you’re playing in the heat. It’s about being able to come out the

next day with that heart and desire and play through some of that pain and the tiredness to keep it going. The ones that are going to make it to states are the capable of coming out and playing even when they’re worn out.” The two games at home against Post 361 and Post 175 will tell Mead a lot about his club. “It’ll be a good look for us to see where we stand this year,” he said. “We’ll see (after those two games) what other work we need to do. We’ll face them against as the season goes

on. So, we’ll use these next two games to see where we stand with the better teams in the district.” While much of June has been spent at home at Powhatan High School, July will be a different story. Just two of Post 201’s games in July are at home, on July 1 and July 8 against Post 185. The other four regular season games will all be on the road prior to the district tournament beginning on July 15. The district finals start on July 18 at Shepherd Stadium.
