Elections staff: Why isn’t state covering salaries? Delegate pledges to once again seek full reimbursement for Electoral Board pay By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Citing the state’s repeated failure to fully reimburse the county for costs associated with holding elections, the Goochland County Board of Elections is once again appealing to its elected representatives to help fix the problem. One issue, according to county Electoral Board secretary Robin Lind, is that the county is currently only receiving reimbursement for about 68 percent of the funds needed to cover the salaries of the county’s General Registrar and three electoral board members. And while those salaries do get paid, Lind said, the difference must be made up by the county. When he hears talk of the state balancing its budget, Lind says, it bothers him. “If they are not reimbursing us,

And for almost that long he’s been hearing the same thing over and over from fellow truck enthusiasts. “Well, first they ask me where I got it, and I tell them I made it,” says White. “And then they ask me what it’s made out of see Trucks > 3

BOS grants Free Clinic request for rule change Organization will be allowed to turn current building into temporary emergency housing By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Thanks to a request approved by the county Board of Supervisors, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) will be allowed to convert its current building into three separate emergency housing units once construction of the organization’s new 20,000 square-foot facility is completed. On July 7, board members approved the request by GFCFS for a Conditional Use Permit that would allow the organization to bypass the current regulation restricting temporary emergency housing units to the ground floor of a structure. The CUP request also asked the board to limit the variance to only those groups with recognized 501c3 nonprofit status, and to cap the allowed number of units at five. Principle planner Tom Coleman explained to board members that the term “temporary emergency houssee Housing > 3

Though White insists there isn’t anything all that unusual about his creations, many of his friends beg to differ. “I just think it’s so neat,” said Donnie Brooks, who has known White for many years and always admired his handiwork. “I don’t think he even realizes how talented he his, but the way he does all of the detail on the trucks — I don’t think I would ever have the patience. Recently, the American Truck Historical Society featured three of White’s trucks in its annual publication “Showtime,” among them his 1985 Caterpillar mining truck; his 2012 Western Star long semi truck; and his 1977 White Freightliner cabover. Ware, for his part, said he expects to once again carry a bill forward in support of the reimbursements. Obituaries DENISE H. AMBROSE Denise H. Ambrose, 64, from Crozier, departed this physical world on July 16, 2017, after a brave and determined battle with leukemia. Denise was born on April 28, 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Margaret and John C. Ambrose. While an only child, she grew up in a vibrant and boisterous clan of Irish cousins, Ambrose aunts and uncles who helped shape her views on social justice and family values. She graduated from Stockton State College in Environmental Science and for 25 years, proudly served small communities all over the commonwealth on behalf of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. After retiring, Denise tried to fill her life’s passion for nature by spending time in her favored Chincoteague, and other nature settings. During her cancer journey, she maintained a sense of humor, a commitment to wellness and a striving for mindfulness. She was a role model
for many in her never-ending quest for spirit, body and mind wholeness, as she had an exercise bike and yoga mat brought into her hospital room while in treatment. Her selflessness will be remembered by loved ones, as throughout her own health travails, she never tired of supporting friends and family with her gentle wisdom and quietly assertive encouragement. Denise leaves behind her beloveds, husband, Andrew “Drew” Meng III; as well as sons, Reilly A. Meng and Brendan C. Meng; plus many extended family members and friends. Denise believed firmly in the connectedness of the universe. While she will be missed, her light and love shines on in the hearts of those who knew her. Remember her not for having had cancer; that was merely the vehicle that took her from us. Remember Denise Ambrose for her spirit of love, social justice, humor and beauty - inside and out. The family will host a Celebration of Life event for those that knew and loved her on July 28, at Maymont’s Garden Hall in Richmond, at 6 p.m., as well as later events in Pittsburgh and Chincoteague. Casual dress is
preferred. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to be sent in her memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or VCU/MCV/ Massey Cancer Center.

family. Elizabeth was a native of Garysburg, North Carolina, daughter of the late John Arthur Suiter Sr. and Myrtle Anderton Suiter. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, William Augustus Robinson Sr.; sister, Peggy Watkins Slade; and brother, John Arthur Suiter Jr. She is survived by her children: Susan Meares of Raleigh, North Carolina and husband, Gary, William Augustus Robinson Jr. of Skippers and his wife, Betsy, Martha Williamson of Chesapeake, and husband, Mark, Alice Kish of Manakin-Sabot, and husband, Wayne, and Mary Strickler of Manakin Sabot, and husband, Charles; her grandchildren, Allison Meares Colquitt and husband, Joseph, Matthew and Emily Robinson, Tyler, Brian and Stuart Williamson, Richard Kish and his wife, Brooke, Mary Katherine and David Kish and William Strickler; her sister-in-law, Joyce B. Suiter; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom she cherished dearly. Elizabeth graduated from Weldon High School in 1948 and St. Mary’s College in 1950, and attended the Pan American Business School in Richmond. She
was a devoted wife and mother whose greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. All who experienced the warm embrace of her gracious hospitality were truly blessed. Elizabeth enjoyed serving in her community as a member of Spring United Methodist Church, the Riparian Women’s Club, the Women’s Committee of the Greensville County Farm Bureau, a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout leader. In 1983 she began a Real Estate career in Emporia, which provided numerous opportunities for her to welcome and befriend many newcomers. A special thanks is extended to the caregivers who loved and cared for our Mother while she was on hospice. Your compassion and many acts of kindness were a blessing. The family received friends on Sunday, July 23, at the Robinson’s home in Skippers. A funeral service was held on July 24, at Spring United Methodist Church in Skippers. Local gardeners urged to share extra produce with food pantries stems from eating better. The hunger prevention organization Feeding America states that 1 in 8 people in America struggle with hunger. Right here in Goochland County, nearly 1800 senior citizens, disabled persons, hard-working adults, and children face hunger every day and often skip meals. The Federation of Virginia Food Banks considers Western Goochland County to be a “food desert” -- an area where populations live more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. The only chance to get food is often through food stamps and/or church pantries and non-profit organizations like the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services. Just think what homegrown fresh fruit and vegetables would mean to these families. The GFCFS Food Pantry makes every effort to provide clients with the most nutritious food possible by

Vegging out Just in time for summer’s bounty, tips for perfectly grilled vegetables One of the highlights of the summer season is the incredible bevy of fresh produce, and grilling these vegetables gives them a smoky, delicious dimension. Want to do them just right? Here are a few tips: When preparing vegetables, slice them to expose as much of the vegetable to the grill surface as you can. Coat vegetables with olive oil before placing them on the grill. This will help prevent them from sticking to the grill. Use the right tool for the job. Accessories like grill toppers and skewers are perfect for keeping smaller foods like cherry tomatoes and onions from rolling around or falling through the grate. Don’t leave vegetables unattended. Vegetables are delicate and can easily overcook if not monitored. Grill extras. Leftover grilled vegetables are great in soups, salads, sandwiches and on pizzas and pasta. When grilling vegetables, consider this popular recipe.

It’s summertime, and gardens all over Goochland are bringing forth a bounty of fresh, delicious, and healthy food. Home gardeners, who plan all year for their gardens, often end up with a bumper crop and have more vegetables and fruit than they can use. When that happens, what to do with all those cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, beans, peas, okra, and melons? There are always family members and neighbors to give to, and canning, if you have the time. However, there is yet another alternative: consider donating surplus produce to the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services Food Pantry (GFCFS) or other local food pantries. The benefits of providing fresh vegetables and fruits to local food pantries are many. One of the challenges facing the GFCFS Food Pantry every week is providing over 170 families with fresh and nutritious produce. For families who live in poverty, fresh food is often a luxury they simply cannot afford. By sharing healthy food that is lovingly grown in local gardens, Goochland neighbors in need will be better nourished. Healthier diets can mean fewer trips to the doctor and contribute to overall wellbeing that

On healthcare: ‘Fail’ shouldn’t be an option By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Let me be clear: I don’t know Arizona Sen. John McCain personally. I wasn’t anywhere nearby last week when he went to the doctor for a routine exam and was told that the vague symptoms he had been experiencing were due to a small but aggressive tumor in his brain. I don’t know what he felt, or what his first thoughts were upon getting this news. I don’t know if he spent the next few hours pleading with God or considering his treatment options. What I do know — or at least strongly suspect — is that he wasn’t worried about how he would pay for his care. For the record, I have always liked and deeply respected John McCain. And I certainly don’t begrudge him good health care. But there remains the hope that, as the bitter battle over healthcare continues, legislators can find a way to put themselves in the shoes of the millions
of Americans who can’t afford any healthcare at all, never mind the top-shelf plans McCain and his fellow senators likely enjoy. Simply letting Obamacare fail is not a viable option. Period. Everyone understands that healthcare reform, as President Trump noted, is hard. But so is open heart surgery. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’d want to be the one on the table when the surgeon throws up his hands and says “This is just too much — let his heart fail completely and we’ll replace it with a new one later. Until then, he’s on his own.” Donald Trump the candidate never actually said on the campaign trail just how exactly he planned to repeal and replace the muchmaligned “Obamacare,” but if he had outlined a plan that included letting millions of Americans dangle in the wind while their elected representatives bickered and threw brickbats at each other, I doubt
his bid for our highest office would have been as enthusiastically supported. Now that the Senate has advanced the new healthcare bill forward, the American people will be watching eagerly to see if their elected representatives truly have their best interests at heart. For the sake of our collective health and wellbeing, let’s hope so.
It didn’t seem funny at the time, but the part of our childhood we can still remember offer a new brand of humor as the years pass. For example, I didn’t think it unusual at all when my sister at about age 8 was involved in the first neighborhood fake wedding. Now, in those days, fake weddings were a regular occurrence as
the days of summer became increasingly difficult to fill and the Popsicle truck only came once a day. As I remember, my sister wore moccasins, shorts and a halter, topped off with an old veiled hat that belonged to my mother. Her husband to be, Bobby Tinder, wore cowboy boots and khaki shorts, but opted for a shirtless Tarzan-type look that seemed to work with the onlookers. I didn’t know that much about

Since Bobby was older and had actually hit kids, we spoke in whispers when referencing his name. But, the word was out. Dear Lady MacBeth: I’m sorry, but cursing your tomato plants simply won’t make the spots go away or help you in future gardening. I will share with you the esteemed words of Emil Faber, fictional founder of Faber College from the 1970s movie Animal House: “Knowledge is good.” There may be definitive answers to what’s causing those spots on your tomato plant, Lady MacBeth. Early Blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria solani and occurs throughout the U.S. Symptoms first appear on the lower, older leaves as small brown spots with concentric rings. Yet, how do you know your tomato plant has actually contracted this particular disease? Lacking a close study of the spots in question, there is no way of knowing their true cause. The spots on the leaves may be caused by a disease. They could also be caused by an insect. Call your local Cooperative Extension office (numbers listed below). If emailing a photo of those spots doesn’t solve your problem, bring in a sample. Bringing the whole plant, roots see Gardener > page 7

Lessons of history still relevant today By Laura McFarland Contributing Editor
A few weeks ago, I made a notation that might seem a little misleading. In talking about the personal significance the Fourth of July holds for me in our June 28 edition, I also said that history has never been my favorite subject and I don’t tend to like dwelling in the past. Both of those statements are accurate. However, in thinking about it the last few weeks, part of me wondered whether it sounded like I was dismissive of the past and those who have gone before us or that I have no appreciation for exploring history. In reality, neither of those statements would be true. Throughout my life, some of my family’s truly memorable outings and vacations saw us visiting museums, Civil War battlefields, the homes of historic figures, and local, state and national landmarks. These experiences were a great way outside of a history class of helping us see historical people
and places in a more personal way. Additionally, writing for newspapers also has exposed me to a great deal of history, especially local history, that has ranged from uplifting to heartbreaking and everything in between. In a related vein, I’ve also said before that I am sometimes behind on discovering new technology and all it has to offer or distract us with, depending on your perspective. In the last few months, I made just one of those discoveries (and my use of the word “discovery” here is something akin to when European explorers anchored along the East Coast of what is now known as North America and “discovered” a new land where indigenous people had been living for centuries). My discovery was podcasts, and one podcast in particular, although I am sure I will venture out more once I have thoroughly exhausted the entertainment, enlightenment, horror and disbelief I
feel when listening to different episodes of “Stuff You Missed in History Class.” Just in case, for anyone who is not familiar with them, podcasts are audio programs, similar to radio or television programs, that can be downloaded off the internet. Some of the topics I have listened to the hosts discuss (of which I do not I claim to be an expert) include: comedian Lucille Ball; the capsizing of the passenger liner S.S Eastland in 1915; the impact that the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, catching fire had on environmental protection advancements; William Moulton Marston, the creator of Wonder Woman; famous Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman’s life beyond the development of the one-piece bathing suit; and the horror of both the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and its longlasting effects on its victims and their families and communities. I even listened to a silly but surprisingly court case laden history of butter versus mar-
garine in Europe and North America. But, for me, the most compelling part of listening to the show is when they make connections from these historical moments, places and people to issues we are still facing today in the nation and the world. I listened with great sadness to the descriptions of the Dakota War of 1862 and the Whitestone Hill Massacre and how its shadow can still be felt over the current issue of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. Another two-part podcast exploring the conditions and situations that led to the Attica prison uprising in 1971 could see parallels in demands made during a February 2017 prison riot in Delaware. Fortunately, the outcome of the more recent riot was not nearly as tragic. Still another episode detailing what happened in the July 1900 New Orleans Race Riot has very real implications in some of the highly racially charged protests and riots we continue to have today across
the country. And, although this isn’t podcast related, in our own backyard, the very real and contentious discussion of the history and use of the Confederate flag and whether Confederate monuments should be taken down is an extremely hot button issue. History is not dead. As one of the hosts said in the podcast, some of the topics they choose can “shed light on why the world is the way it is and the things that we as a nation are struggling with.” That awareness – that acknowledgement – of the context history provides can be critical not as a way to assign blame but to bring understanding to the issues we face today and, hopefully, in some cases even bring reconciliation.

Grant program aims to empower local youth By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A new initiative in Goochland is making it easier for young people to make a difference in their communities. Goochland YouthNet, a grant program for youth-led community service initiatives, is currently accepting appli-
cations for one of four $250 awards to be used for a project of the recipient’s choosing. According to the program’s founder, Renee Sottong, the goal is to empower young people and help them learn to facethe many challenges that lie ahead for themselves and their peers. “I’m always looking for ways to give kids opportuni-
ties to express themselves, to be a part of the mental health conversation, and generate solutions to the challenges they face every day,” Sottong said. No stranger to community activism, Sottong also founded the youth advocacy Facebook page Goochland ParentNet and the “Because You Matter” quilt project. She points out that young people in the community can often serve as problem solvers in a way adults can’t. “Take an issue like bullying, for example,” Sottong said. “Teens have a unique perspective on how it works, where they turn for help — and where
they don’t — and how their peers view various initiatives designed to change the bullying equation. Asking them to join the conversation, to lead new initiatives and help us make existing resources more accessible just makes sense. Their ideas are essential to creating effective social innovation.” Goochland YouthNet Grants are available to any Goochland resident between the ages of 5 and 18. No payback is required, but the projects must be open and accessible to the entire community. The grants will also be restricted to independent projects as opposed to than those with
organizational affiliations. Sottong says her goal is ultimately to instill the idea that it is never too early to help improve the lives of those around you. “I hope Goochland YouthNet sends a message to every Goochland kid: your ideas are valuable, and you have the power to bring positive change to our community,” she said. “Plus, by matching them with local mentors, we hope to help kids develop skills and relationships that will be useful throughout their lives.” Sottong is currently working to raise funds for the grant awards, and has started
a Go Fund Me page to aid the effort. She is also selling handmade wooden pet bowls at local farmers markets and participating in online yard sales. As of last week, she had also received a donation of $250 from Goochland County Public Schools. Grant applications are available online, and submissions must be received by Oct. 1. Once all submissions have been received, a panel will review and award funds. For more information on the Goochland YouthNet grant program, visit www.goochlandparentnet.wixsite.com/ youthnet,

A closer look at new Virginia laws now in effect From hunting licenses to farm use tags, plenty of changes are impacting how Goochlanders live Contributed report
(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III.) As always, on July 1, 2017, new legislation took effect in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The following article is a summary of new legislation that I believe is of interest to the citizens of Virginia. Not every piece of new legislation is addressed and those laws noted are only summarized. Please contact your local Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office should there be any questions. A law enforcement officer or animal control officer may now determine if a dog is dangerous. The owner now has 30 days time to secure the dangerous dog registration certificate and comply with other provisions. When a defendant owes restitution to a victim of a criminal offense, money collected from the defendant will be applied to restitution first, then to fines and costs. To assist in combating the opioid problem, the Department of Health is permitted to distribute naloxone to drug treatment providers after training has been received. A pharmacist may dispense naloxone to one who has a standing order although there is no patientspecific prescription. A prescriber registered with Prescription monitoring Program (PMP) must check PMP prior to issuing an opioid prescription that will last more than 7 days (was 14). Opioid prescriptions must be submitted electronically. No longer is the driver’s license suspension mandatory for one convicted of 1st offense possession of marijuana unless the possessor was driving. In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Burchfield v. North Dakota, wherein criminal penalties for a refusal of a blood test were found unconstitutional, amendments were enacted to Virginia’s D.U.I. laws that took effect on March 16, 2017. There is no longer a criminal penalty for refusal of a blood test. However, one may consent to the test or the officer may secure a search warrant to obtain a blood sample. The breath test is legally permissible as it is a search incident to the arrest and criminal prosecution is permissible for refusal to submit to a breath test. The refusal may be
used as evidence in the D.U.I. trial. A second offense of refusal of a breath test is reclassified to a Class I misdemeanor from a Class II. This increases the financial penalty and doubles the possible jail sentence. The loss of license for refusal of a blood or breath test, second offense in 10 years, remains at 3 years. Presumptive levels of intoxication will apply to blood obtained by a search warrant. Search warrant applications for blood test are to be given priority by magistrates. All of the amendments to driving under the influence statutes will now be conformed with sections dealing with juvenile DUI, commercial driver DUI and boating DUI. The business records hearsay exemption has been expanded to criminal cases. This change permits business records to be introduced by written certification as opposed to live testimony. Government records may now be authenticated by digital signature. Hunting licenses may now be carried by electronic or computerized means. A state junior bear hunting license was created for those under 16 years of age. A sling bow can be used to hunt deer and small game when the hunter is licensed to hunt with bow and arrow. Hunters may wear blaze pink instead of previously required blaze orange. An individual who agreed to a first offender disposition on a domestic violence charge may no longer appeal a conviction resulting from violating the terms of first offender agreement. A defendant has 14 days to withdraw from his initial plea. Protection for health care providers against assault and battery was expanded to include personnel of any clinic or facility rendering emergency care. Persons with violent felony convictions are not eligible for first offender domestic violence disposition without the approval of the prosecutor. Retained lawyers in criminal felony cases may withdraw within 10 days after charges are certified from the district court. Written notice must be provided to the client, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Circuit Court. The court or the clerk is required to issue a transportation order for a defendant to be brought to court from a correctional facility upon request of the Commonwealth’s Attorney or counsel for the defendant. Testimony in a preliminary hearing or sentencing hearing by an analyst for results in a certificate of analysis may be conducted via
two-way video. The requirement that a building be “public” has been removed for purposes of charging maliciously activating a fire alarm. Sub-contractors are permitted to work without a license if the job is valued at less than $2,500 and does not require a specialized license. It is a Class I misdemeanor (up to $2,500 fine and/or up to 12 months in jail) to use an electronic device to trespass on property to peep or spy into a dwelling or occupied building. This prohibits the use of a drone to perform what one cannot do in person. It is permissible to use electric personnel delivery devices (robots) on sidewalks, shareduse paths and crosswalks unless prohibited by the locality. Virginia is the first state to pass such a law. The fine for a second or subsequent farm use vehicle violation is now $250. Previously, it was up to $250 regardless of the number of previous violations. Drivers are now required to move a vehicle to the side after a breakdown/accident/emer-
gency that did not result in an injury and driver is capable to do so. Failure to drive on the right side or observe traffic lanes will result in a set fine of $100. Purpose is to address “left-lane bandits” who drive too slowly in the left hand lane. Maximum allowable distance to qualify for farm use registration exemption was increased to 75 miles. Law enforcement officer may require suspected violator to provide address or parcel identification number of qualifying farmlands. License suspensions for failure to pay fines and costs shall run concurrent with any other license suspensions. License suspension for convictions of driving while suspended because of nonpayment of fines and costs are to run concurrent with the underlying suspension. Previously, the suspensions were consecutive. Again, this article does not address all new laws or changes to existing statutes. Should any reader have a question about any law mentioned or not mentioned, please contact Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney D. Michael Caudill at (804) 556-5345 for more information.

Post 201’s season ends in district semifinals By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It isn’t often that a team allows a nine-spot in one inning and comes back to almost win the game. But, Powhatan American Legion Post 201 almost pulled off that feat in the District 11 quarterfinals at Shepherd Stadium on July 19 in a 13-11 loss to Lakeside
Post 125. The loss ended the season for Post 201. “We get a couple bad innings and we keep fighting back,” coach Eric Mead said. “That’s what this team has done all year long.” “We came up a little bit short tonight,’ he said. “But, I’m extremely happy with where this team came this year.” “This has been one of the
better 201 teams we’ve had and over the past three years, we’ve continued to get better and better. We’re better than we were last year,” Mead added. Powhatan got off to a good start against Post 125, the team that they had beaten in the first game of the playoffs at Douglas Freeman. Cale Agee worked a leadoff walk, which was followed by a single off the bat of Jacob
Talley. Adam Seal reached on a fielder’s choice before an RBI single by Wayne Butler knocked in a run. John Reynolds reached on an error in the inning as well, with Agee, Talley and Seal all scoring for a 3-0 lead. Reynolds started on the mound for Post 201 and was sharp early, allowing four base runners, but no runs, in the
first two innings. Lakeside broke through in the bottom of the third inning. A leadoff double led to being moved to third by a sacrifice bunt and a steal of home made it 3-1. Another run would score in the inning on an error for a 3-2 lead for 201. In the bottom of the fifth, the flood gates opened up as
Lakeside scored nine runs. The inning was a rough one for 201 as Reynolds couldn’t find the strike zone and four pitchers saw action on the mound in the inning: Reynolds, Hunter Montgomery, Austin Nicholas and Talley. Lakeside worked five walks in the inning and 201 gave up three hits which scored a total see Legion> 11

Derby Camp continues success in fifth year By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
In the blazing heat of mid-July in Virginia, coach Brian Derby was standing out in the middle of the football field wearing long, black athletic sleeves. Derby, a gregarious spirit, was right at home in the heat of the day. “It’s nice,” he said during one of the water breaks during the high school lineman portion of the camp. “I keep telling everyone … we’re just missing some sand and some waves and this is Hawaii.” Derby made the long trek from Hawaii to Richmond to join forces with Geoff McDonald for the fifth annual Brian Derby Offensive Lineman camp. McDonald, now a lawyer, is a former lineman at both the University of Hawaii and the University of Virginia, the former of which is where he met Derby and struck up what is now a 35-year and counting friendship. “It’s going fantastic,” he said. “We’re really happy to be out here.” The camp ran from July 18 to July 21 and had a morning session for players from second through eighth grade and the mid-morning to mid-day session was for the high school lineman. McDonald said that they had 60 kids in the younger kids’ session, which was a record crowd, according to him. “We had more kids than we knew

what to do with this morning,” he said. “We need coaches now.” While the high school session wasn’t as large, it provided the kids that were on the field some valuable one-on-one instruction from an experienced and learned coach in Derby. “We’ve got some good kids out here,” Derby said. “Especially those young kids, we have a lot of kids at the young level. You can tell when someone is coached. They see them in their stance, their footwork … you go, someone coached these kids. There are some very technically sound kids. That’s hats off to these coaches.” Derby said that he is really encouraged by how many young kids were in attendance in the mornings. “The more the merrier,” he said. “I tell everyone, the o-line is a skill position. We have to run block, pass block, zone block, scoop block, pull, toss, pass pro, aggressive … there’s so much technique we’ve got to do. So, I always say the skill guys, they’re just running. We’ve got to block for them. Without us, you’ve got nothing.” McDonald said that the camp provides a crucial gap in the offerings of football camps. “Everyone says it’s all about the line,” he said. “But, all you have are quarterback camps and snapping camps. This is the only lineman camp. We believe in it.” “The coolest thing about this camp,” McDonald said, “the people who have bought into it, they’ve won championships.”
