Man who fired at area trooper given 30 years Zamorano previously pled guilty to charges including attempted capital murder, use of firearm by a felon By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A Tennessee man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for firing at a Virginia State Trooper during a high-speed car chase through Goochland in 2016. Paul Zamorano, 33, of Kingsport, Tennessee, received 25 years for attempted capital murder, as well as three years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was given an additional five years for possessing a firearm as a felon, but three years of that sentence was suspended. Zamorano was headed west on I-64 on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 15, 2016, when he passed State Trooper Seth Gaultney travelling at a speed just above 80 miles per hour. Zamorano According to court records, Zamorano’s wife, Mistri Griffith, was behind the wheel when Gaultney attempted to stop the vehicle. Griffith testified in court that Zamorano, who was wanted in Tennessee for failing to register as a sex offender, had threatened to kill her if she pulled the car over. A chase ensued, during which Zamorano fired at Gaultney’s car, hitting the vehicle’s radiator and passenger mirror. Joined by Trooper Scott Thompson, Gaultney see Zamorano > 2

The new shelter, which will be located on the site of the current facility at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane, will incorporate a shelter, adoption, care, and education center far surpass-

ing the size of the current shelter. Unveiled to great acclaim from county residents, the new shelter is designed to meet the needs of Animal Protection for decades to come. The estimated completion date of the project is fall 2018.

Goochland Family YMCA celebrates 25th anniversary of Bright Beginnings Program helps ensure local children have the supplies they need for successful school year Contributed report

The new school year is just weeks away and the Goochland Family YMCA is making sure that all children are prepared. Through the YMCA Bright Beginnings program, the Goochland Y takes dozens

of local children back-to-school shopping with donations from the community. Volunteers take children, who would otherwise not be prepared, shopping for new clothes and appropriate shoes. The children are also provided with a new, donated backpack stuffed with essential school supplies. This year marks the program’s 25th anniversary. Andrew Dyson, executive director of the Goochland Family YMCA, says more donations and volunteers are needed to meet this year’s goal. “The success of this program is 100

percent reliant on the response of the community. Dozens of deserving children will start the school year feeling prepared and confident only because an entire community of volunteers, donors, backpack buddies, children’s partners, and staff members is committed to making it happen. I humbly encourage if it’s in your heart to do so, to please contribute to this amazing program,” he said. To learn more about the program, including information on how to help, call (804) 556-9887 or stop by the Goochland Family YMCA.

RSAAC partnerships helping save local lives Area group working to combat substance abuse in Goochland, Powhatan Contributed report

In 2016, 15 people from Goochland and Powhatan counties died from opiate use. As a result of these numbers, Goochland Powhatan Community Services Board was selected to receive a $100,000 Opiate Prevention, Treatment and Recovery (OPT-R) grant award from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Luxford The Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) has created an aggressive plan to utilize the Prevention portion of the grant funds to reduce access to opiates, increase community awareness of opiate Nordvig

dangers, and inform the community of treatment options. On July 11, 2017, Larry Nordvig, vice-chair and District 2 Member of the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors, was unanimously elected RSAAC Chair. “We are in the business of saving lives, noted Nordvig, as he reminded RSAAC members of the importance of community partnerships in making change through coalition work. Nordvig succeeds Sergeant Brad Luxford of the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office as chair. Luxford served on RSAAC’s Leadership Committee since July 2016 and as chair since February 7, 2017. Carolyn McKann, a Goochland County resident, continues to serve as vice chair. She has served within the coalition’s leadership since July 2016. McKann takes an active role in educating the coalition about the Prescription Monitoring Program that is essential to helping local doctors prevent opiate abuse among their patients. She also was instrumental in establishing RSAAC’s current infrastructure and bylaws. During his tenure, Luxford established

a permanent drug drop box in Powhatan County. The drop box provides citizens with the opportunity to rid their homes of unwanted prescription drugs instead of waiting for bi-annual drug take back days. Luxford also organized and promoted two drug take back events in Powhatan County, served as a liaison between RSAAC and the Central Virginia Opioid and Heroin Taskforce, and represented RSAAC at the Virginia Behavioral Health and Wellness Conference in June 2016 as state leaders convened to begin creating a needs assessment to describe how substance use is affecting Virginia. In addition, Luxford represented RSAAC at the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) national conference that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada in July 2016. Luxford’s contributions to the RSAAC Needs Assessment during the past two years led the coalition to understand substance use trends in Goochland and Powhatan counties. The RSAAC Needs Assessment figured prominently in the awarding of the OPT-R grant. Nordvig will continue to chair RSAAC’s Planning Taskforce. The taskforce convened on

Wednesday, June 21 to prioritize the utilization of prevention funds for RSAAC. A tentative budget plan was approved during the July 11 RSAAC meeting. The plan includes a coordinated media campaign to raise awareness of substance use issues, treatment, and prevention information for Goochland and Powhatan Counties. The community is thankful for RSAAC’s leaders and their many contributions that are enhancing the health of our local communities in both Goochland and Powhatan counties. The Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) was established in 2014 to serve the Virginia counties of Goochland and Powhatan. RSAAC members consist of representatives from schools, businesses, organizations, justice and law enforcement, local health departments, and citizens who envision a community free from substance abuse and have the skills and motivation to initiate change for greater community health and wellness. Meetings occur on the first Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m., with meeting locations rotating on a quarterly basis between Goochland and Powhatan counties.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Say it like you mean it: Making speeches soar again By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Here’s a question for you: Do you love words? Do you have a favorite word? Or maybe can’t even pick just one? If I told you that the word “petrichor” means “the pleasant, earthy smell after a rain,” or that to “bombinate” is to make a humming or buzzing sound, would it make your heart just swell with joy? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you just might be a language lover. More specifically — though perhaps not as kindly — there is a twoword phrase that describes people like us: words nerds. We delight in the multisyllabic jaw breakers, the esoteric adjectives, and the verbs that send us either to straight to the dictionary (if we are charmingly old school) or, more often these days, to

the Webster’s website. One doesn’t have to be a scholar to appreciate our language. Simply consider the following description, offered up by the late, great British columnist AA Gill, of a restaurant he was asked to review (spoiler alert: he didn’t care for it). “To say the food is repellently awful would be to credit it with a vim and vigor and attitude it simply can’t rise to. The bowls and dishes dribble and limp to the table with a yawning lassitude. A vain empty ennui. They weren’t so much presented as wilted and folded to death. It was all prepared with that most depressing and effete culinary style — tepid whimsy.” Vicious? Yes. But prose of such pulchritude will always have a place in my heart. Sadly, it’s been quite some time since I’ve either witnessed or heard someone take hold of the English language and so expertly wield it to

inspire or entertain. Most of our celebrities and politicians seem to favor a far more watered down, less pugnacious style than was once the fashion — the better to avoid any chance at offending someone, I suppose — and few and far between are those who are truly able to ignite a crowd. Substance is, of course, far more important than style, but I will be the first to admit that on some gray days I pine for the latter. I’m not looking for Churchill’s “Finest Hour” speech here, but can anyone in Congress offer an address that isn’t the aural equivalent of Ambien anymore? Last week brought us plenty of speeches and boatloads of pontification. What it didn’t bring us, however — Anthony Scaramucchi’s performance notwithstanding — was anything to get very excited about. Healthcare, taxes, immigration — it will all be sorted out eventually.

But in the meantime, can we spice it up a little? After all, if these politicians are going to continue talking out of both sides of their mouths, they can at least say something worth listening to. Word nerds of the world, we should demand no less. *** Attention loyal Gazette readers: Do you have a story to tell, or know someone who should be featured in the pages of the Gazette? Used over and over (and over), words really can hurt By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It’s a universal irritant — those pesky phrases that are so overused that the mere sound of them makes us cringe. They happen in almost every avenue in life, whether it’s in the normal dialect of the office or

repeated in almost every newscast known to man. Lately, I’ve heard the term “get out over my skis” dozens of times when a person being interviewed doesn’t want to go far with an answer. It’s a phrase that took the news industry by storm, and I’ve heard every variation of the phrase.

“I don’t want to out in front of my skis,” one commentator recently said as he attempted to reach a conclusion on a set of facts. Wow, that’s a variation of the metaphor that draws some pretty frightening images, and I suppose if one is in front of one’s skis, he’s probably seconds away from being run over.

I recently read an article about banned or should be banned phrases in the office. They included too often heard fragments like “go big or go home” or “circle back”. In addition single words like synergy and ping also were frequent winsee Words > 7

Letters to the Editor Goochland’s Relay was once again a supreme team effort Editor’s note: With a grand total so far this year of $6,074, Goochland Relay for Life’s Barbara Fleming is the local organization’s top fundraiser. This week, she shared her thoughts on the 2017 event, which took place on June 16. Dear Editor, At the close of last year’s Relay For Life, the Mount Gilead Purple Hearts had raised $14,214.26, and we were the top fundraisers in the county. So in September 2016, we started our new Relay year. Beverly DuVal had a yard sale at her trailer. Patsy Woodson volunteered to be our Team Captain again this year. We are so proud of her. She has done a great job of taking our money, counting it, and filling out the accounting sheets and envelopes. We salute her for being our Captain and doing a great job! Connie Lewis, one of our members, put on her Big Girl Britches (a private joke among us ladies) and volunteered to be our Event Chairperson for Goochland County. We are so proud of her and she did a great job and lost a lot of sleep. She made many phone calls and sent many emails making plans for our event. We thought it was going to rain so we held the event in the Goochland Middle School. It turned out great. We recognize Connie for the great job. She wore the Big Girl Panties with no sweat. “I think we had a great year working together and having fun raising money for the American Cancer Society.” In December, we made Brunswick Stew at Sophie Pryor’s house – 47 quarts. That’s always fun, and we all smell like smoke. Laura [from the American Cancer Society] and her mom came to see us there.

On Feb. 15, we served soup at the Masons’ 100th Birthday Party. Treva Payne joined our team, yeah! She became one of our great helpers at our Bingos. Thank you, Treva. We salute you as a helper! Minnie Shiflett joined our team and started right to work for our Bingos at the Old Company 6 Firehouse, getting gift cards and items donated for our prizes. She sold raffle tickets on our ham and quilt. We thank Minnie and salute her for all of her work and miles traveled to get Bingo prizes! In April, we sold raffle tickets on a ham for Easter. Judy Crutchfield printed all of our raffle tickets on the turkey, ham and quilt, and made flyers for Bingo. So, we salute Judy as our printer! In July, Beverly DuVal had another awesome yard sale. Asking for donations rather than pricing the items, she made over $1,000. Think of

This fall, we wonder if she’ll be on Dancing With the Stars. We salute Sheila as our Dancer. I think we had a great year working together and having fun raising money for the American Cancer Society. I think we have learned from this that it takes all kinds of talent to make a great team, so let’s continue with the work and fun to have another great year together starting in September 2017. Ridolphi continued from >6 ners in the contest of most obnoxious office phrases. Terms like “peel back the layers of the onion” are no longer viewed as clever metaphors to motivate, but annoying attempts at cuteness that fall short of the mark. Daniel Bukszpan of CNBC compiled the list and suggested some of the terms like “think outside of the box” have outlived their usefulness and I tend to agree. Now, I’m no expert on office lingo, but I’ve been around enough newsrooms to offer some recent phrases that I hope will be banned besides the previously mentioned “over his skis.”

If I hear the term “tick tock” used in place of timeline or what actually happened and when, it will affect my synergy. And lately, the choice between any two well-defined options has become “binary” I’m not sure who used it first or who repeated it, but it’s become the latest version of cliché in the news business. “It comes down to a binary choice,” one interviewee recently said. “Does that mean yes or no?” the host asked. “Yes.” The phenomena of overused phrases, euphemisms and metaphors are not limited to the office. Every time I respond to something they’ve said with the expression “Really?” they tell me how far behind the times I actually am. It seems the phrase has

gone the way of “Ya think?” and other cute responses that make the rounds and then retire to a place of obscurity in our everyday language. I’m sure you have your own list of those pesky phrases that drive you crazy, but, for now, we’re on a journey. I was going to make this last sentence include all of the annoying phrases I discovered in researching this project. But once I ran it up the flagpole, I realized that would amount to a nothing burger. The appeal of euphemisms, analogies or metaphors is personal and what irritates one makes another laugh. You either like it or you don’t, or, as my trendy jargon intense commentators might say, it’s a binary choice.

Goochland students will gather to witness rare eclipse Aug. 21 Contributed report

The Goochland Education Foundation is providing special glasses for 3,000 students and staff for viewing the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 in Goochland County. Goochland will be the only school district in the Commonwealth of Virginia to hold a school district-wide viewing of the solar eclipse. Goochland County is on the edge of the total solar eclipse band, and 80 percent of it will be visible. The eclipse will be visible, even in cloudy conditions. The event will happen at the three elementary schools (Byrd ES, Goochland ES, and Randolph ES) and the mid-

dle and high school complex. There will be photographers on the roof of the secondary complex of the middle school and high school students. There will be photographers at each elementary school as well to record this historic event. The school district’s leadership is excited about this collaboration with the foundation. Dr. Jeremy Raley, Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent, believes this exemplifies the partnership between the schools and the foundation. “We are very excited to start off our school year with such a unique and engaging experience for our students and staff. Foundation to set the stage for this day and provide all of our students with the tools needed to witness this occasion are tremendous, and we appreciate their partnership as we continue to distinguish ourselves as a division”. Cyndy Brown, executive director of the Foundation, said she is excited about the opportunity to offer an experience the children of Goochland County will remember for the rest of their lives. “It goes to the very heart of the our mission of partnering with the Goochland schools to provide impactful experiences that enhance the students’ education. When we can take advantage of an event

such as this, we are working together to open up potential the students’ might never have imagined,” Brown said. The teaching staff are preparing activities and lesson plans for that day so the students learn about what a solar eclipse is, how it comes about, and why it is so rare. There are follow-up activities the next day to apply what they witnessed. O

utdoor parties have a flair all their own. Entertaining outside means being able to enjoy the fresh air, sun and extra space that the great outdoors allows. Entertaining outdoors may include intimate barbecues with friends or weddings with hundreds of guests. While parks, yards, and gardens can make beautiful backdrops for parties, hosts still need to emphasize preparation when throwing an outdoor party.

Select and prepare the space Many homeowners host parties for friends and family in their backyards. Whereas other spaces, including parks, require the transport of food and other supplies, backyards offer the ultimate in convenience, allowing homeowners to cook foods in their kitchens and then carry items directly to the backyard. Backyards are not always set up or equipped for events, and preparation will be required to turn the yard into a party-worthy area. Plan a day for cleanup. Remove toys, tools and debris. Be sure the grass is mowed and clippings are removed. Address any tripping hazards and make sure there is an easy path in and out of the party, as well as to the restrooms. Take inventory of tables and seating options and rent or buy extra seating if necessary.

Provide shade and shelter Every party host hopes for good

weather when entertaining outside, but it is best to have a contingency plan in place just in case Mother Nature does not cooperate. Awnings and patio umbrellas can only do so much, and it may be necessary to install pop-up tents or stationary gazebos to protect guests from the elements. Think about renting tents from party supply companies, which usually will erect the tents and take them down after use. Even if the weather will be pleasant, have spots where guests can escape the sun. It Plan for insects Entertaining outdoors means sharing can be uncomfortable and dangerous to the space with insects and animals. Rogerson breaks 25 back record at CHAMPS By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland YMCA swimmer Andrea Rogerson is becoming quite adept at breaking records in the Greater Richmond Aquatic League. On July 29, Rogerson did it again on the biggest stage in the league. She broke the record in the 25 yard backstroke with a

The record-breaking time was a full 1.27 seconds ahead of Karina Blanco of The Federal Club, who finished second in the event. Roundup: VHSL changes arrive with fall sports By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Last season, Goochland High School produced several Conference 34 champions throughout the school year. But, as the fall sports teams start their tryouts and practices to begin their 2017 season, the goal of being a conference champion is no longer something any of the teams need to be concerned about. The Virginia High School League (VHSL) instituted changes to the classification structure once again and the changes go into effect beginning with the upcoming fall sports season. The biggest of these changes is the elimination of the conferences in favor of a regional structure. The conferences were created four years ago, but will now be a thing of the past. Also changing are the names by which the regions and groups are classified. Each class, which replaces the group nomenclature, will have four regions a piece, up from the old system of two regions per group. For example, Goochland’s classification as recently as the spring

Swim continued from >12 was on the 11-to-12 200 medley relay team which was ninth with a 2:21.51. Emmi Evans finished second in the 11-to-12 50 free with a 29.22. She was also on the third-place 200 free relay team which swam a 2:04.30. Evans finished seventh in the 50 breast with a 41.70. Joseph Hardman was on the thirdplace 200 free team with Evans. He also finished sixth in the 50 fly with a 34.60, seventh in the 50 back with a 35.63 and ninth with Evans in the mixed 200 medley relay with a time of 2:21.51.

was Group 2A, Region 2A East and Conference 34. Now, the Bulldogs will now be grouped in Class 2, Region A. Other schools in Region A with Goochland are Amelia, Arcadia, Bluestone, Bruton, Brunswick, Greensville, King William, Nandua, Nottoway, Poquoson, Prince Edward, Randolph-Henry and Maggie Walker Governor’s School. Also, as has historically been the case, Goochland will be in the James River District along with Amelia, Bluestone, Buckingham, Central Lunenburg, Cumberland, Nottoway, Prince Edward and RandolphHenry. When the conferences were adopted, the districts still were utilized for scheduling purposes in the regular season. The districts will continue to do so in the new format. Buckingham is now in Region C and Cumberland is in Class 1, Region B. In the playoffs, all the sports will begin their playoffs in the region tournament as football has done since the reclassification in 2013. The state tournament for most sports will change from a two-round tournament to a three-round tour-

Payton Harrigal was third in both the 50 free with a 23.89 and the 100 free with a 55.21. Buzz off: Studies show oil from eucalyptus plant can help keep away mosquitoes

A

lthough many insects can be more of a nuisance than a legitimate threat, some insects, such as mosquitoes and ticks, can spread disease. Mosquitoes are considered among the most dangerous creatures on the planet for their ability to spread deadly diseases, which include everything from malaria to encephalitis to Zika to West Nile virus. Repellents remain the best defense to keep mosquitoes and ticks at bay. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that products containing lemon eucalyptus oil can be just as effective at warding off mosquitoes as the more commonly used chemical repellent DEET. DEET, registered for public use in 1957, is the most widely used mosquito and tick repellent. DEET is highly effective at repelling a wide range of bugs. Although various health organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have concluded that “the normal use of DEET does not present a health concern to the general population,”

there are some potential side effects. DEET is a neurotoxin and can affect the nervous system. Rashes, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, and headaches are possible side effects of using DEET. Oil of lemon eucalyptus, however, is an allnatural solution that does not carry the same neurological risks as DEET or other chemical repellents. According to the CDC, when oil of lemon eucalyptus was tested against mosquitoes found in the United States, it provided a similar level of protection as repellents with low concentrations of DEET. When selecting oil of lemon eucalyptus products (OLE), also known as PMD or the chemical name para-menthane-3,8-diol, the CDC says to choose a product that is an EPAregistered repellent containing tested OLE or PMD. “Pure” oils are not formulated as repellents and may not be as effective. Precautions should be taken when using any type of insect repellent. Apply only to exposed skin or clothing as directed on the product.

Avoid application to wounds or irritated skin. Do not use on eyes or mouth, and apply sparingly around the ears. Apply a thin film of repellent. Wash hands after application. The Environmental Working Group advises that, because the dangers to children have not been thoroughly explored, products with OLE and PMD should not be used on any child under the age of three. Botanical products may be safer and just as effective as chemical-based insect repellents. Consumers should do their research and take additional steps to minimize their exposure to mosquitoes and harmful bugs. — MetroCreative

Friend of foe? Some insects more helpful than others Contributed report

lthough it’s virtually impossible to count them, insects are the most diverse group of organisms on the planet. Nine hundred thousand different kinds of insects are known to exist. At any given time, it is estimated that there are around 10 quintillion individual insects living. Gardeners grow frustrated when seeing their gardens infested with insects. In an effort to restore their gardens, homeowners might be tempted to eradicate any bug that moves in their yards. But gardeners would be wise to first learn which insects are hurting their gardens and which can actually help gardens in the long run.
