or Goochland resident Kelly Taylor, a full time student and mother of two young sons, not having access to high speed internet at her home can often be inconvenient. And sometimes it can be worse than that. Taylor recently recalled the night one of her sons, who suffers from epilepsy, had a seizure at their home near George’s Tavern. Taylor and her husband were able to capture the event on video, but sending it to her son’s doctor through the hospital’s web-based patient portal proved impossible due to the family’s slow internet connection. “It’s frustrating,” says Taylor, explaining that while the fam-

On Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution supporting the Regional Plan for School Readiness 2017-2020. According to a statement released by the county, “Goochland County recognizes that quality early childhood services can reduce socio-economic and health disparities between children of different backgrounds and provide a stronger foundation for a healthy start.” Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond’s partnership of more than 110 organizations has raised awareness about the importance of the early years and leveraged resources and organizing power to create more opportunities for families to support a healthy start for their children. Numerous agencies and partners contributed to this plan, including Goochland County Public Schools, Pamunkey Regional Library, and other early childhood for-profit and nonprofit partners serving Goochland County. The Regional Plan for School Readiness 2017-2020 builds on the premise that a strong start for children of all incomes is good for the economic vitality and well-being of Goochland County and the region.

a flood of responses from those who had either no access or access that was not fast or reliable enough to meet needs. One resident described not being able to secure high speed internet even though the lines were buried on her property, and another reported having to take the family desktop to a friend’s home in Henrico just to run system updates. The vast majority of the complaints, however, came from professionals who have found working from home nearly impossible without a fast, reliable internet connection. Even in the eastern end of the county, some find their workdays derailed by internet issues. Jil Davis and her husband live near the intersection of Route 6 and Dover Road, at the end of a street on which Davis says every home but theirs has access to high speed internet. As Davis points out, despite the fact that the cable for those connections is actually buried on their land, they have not been able to convince the service provider, Comcast, to con-

nect their home for less than $20,000. For now, Davis says, they get by for the most part with a Verizon mifi hotspot and a backup data plan, but it doesn’t always work. “On a good day [it works],” says Davis, who works from home as a bookkeeper, “but sometimes it doesn’t, and I have to tell my clients ‘Sorry, I can’t work today.’” District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez, who made increasing internet access in Goochland a key part of his campaign in 2011, says progress on finding workable solutions has come in fits and starts. At this point, “we’ve been successful doing neighborhoods one at a time,” Alvarez said, “but it’s slow and frustrating. It just takes too long.” Alvarez said the county continues to reach out to anyone who can help, including the Governor’s Office, and noted that county leaders are currently in talks with a company that could step in to help connect more residents. Still, he said, he remains concerned that companies like

see Calendar > 13

Comcast and Verizon have little incentive to bring service to low density areas like western Goochland that likely won’t offer much initial return on the investment. Also troubling to some, including Alvarez, is the fact that 74 percent of black Goochland residents live west of Maidens Road in areas where high speed internet is unavailable or prohibitively expensive. “I think [the lack of coverage] is an economic issue, but it is impacting some people differently,” Alvarez said. “I don’t think these companies are intentionally discriminating, but they are because of where people live.” Alvarez said last week that he knows the cure for the county’s high speed woes will likely require a multipronged solution, but added that the companies who provide service should be asked to bear at least some of the burden. “It’s a complicated thing,” Alvarez said, “but somebody needs to push these companies. They need to reinvest some of that money back into the communities.”

The front main parking lot will be closed for use throughout the project, beginning today. The county apologizes for any inconvenience this may create. Customers and citizens will be given priority to park in all the lots surrounding the Administration

Building Complex. Preparation for construction began on Sunday, July 23, with removal of existing trees surrounding the main front parking lot. The natural components of the complex are very important to the county and the removal of the trees was a heavy consideration during the development of the scope of the project. Numerous options were evaluated to meet the parking demands and preserve as many trees as possible in the final design. Landscaping and

trees removed will be replaced with a greater quantity of new landscaping and mature trees. “We thank citizens for their patience during this project,” said John Budesky, county administrator. “Once complete the expansion of parking will allow citizens and customers easier access to county offices, especially during high-traffic periods.” As the project progresses, updates will be shared via the county’s website www.goochlandva.us, social media channels, and through local media.

I must point out before I go any further that my grandfather was a truly brilliant man, a successful engineer who, while deeply kind and generous, was not easily impressed. So, imagine everyone’s delight when he watched my father sit down in front of our big, white, bulky desktop computer, tap on a few keys, and pull up a photo of his ship — not just the type of ship he served on, but his actual ship. Soon we found a website dedicated to the vessel, more photos, and a place where those he served with could connect. To say he was both amazed and delighted would be an understatement. We were so fortunate to be able to witness that moment — to watch a new world open up for someone we loved — and I think about that day whenever people talk about

how the internet has changed the world. In the grand scheme of things, my grandfather’s experience may seem quite insignificant, but it represents just one way in which access to the internet can impact someone’s life. The internet doesn’t just open up new worlds and connect people, of course. Access to fast, reliable internet service is critical for both education and business. And the county’s efforts to ensure that access is available to those living in the western part of Goochland (as discussed in our front page story this week) is a worthwhile effort to be commended. Like it or not, the internet is a crucial part of modern life, and not having it places a burden on working people and families. The more people we can help get connected in Goochland, the better for all of us.

So close, and yet so far By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As my neighbors returned from their Outer Banks vacation last week, I couldn’t wait to hear the story of how they had survived a week of cancelled plans, extra expense and a car full of real sad faces. You didn’t have to look far to find someone affected by the recent power outage that caused a blackout on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands and forced a mandatory evacuation for thousands of vacationers primed and ready for a week of sun and fun. A construction crew working on a replacement for the Bonner Bridge drove a steel rod through three connecting power cables, slicing the main connection to Hatteras and Ocracoke. Families at the end of a weeklong stay were forced to leave early and arriving renters were warned in advance that their reservations could not be honored. Residents and business owners were allowed to stay but life wasn’t easy for the first couple of days until generators and other alternative sources helped ease the discomfort. For an estimated 10,000 vacationers, it’s more than just the loss of an anticipated vacation free from the stress and anxiety of the work-a-day world. It’s a disappointment that forced families to scramble for alternate plans. For my neighbors, they opted for the Wrightsville Beach area, but were forced to stay inland due to the influx of families seeking accommodations during the busiest time of the season. For Hatteras and Ocracoke residents, it’s a financial blow that is almost impossible from which see Ridolphi > 7

to recover. These height-of-theseason weeks provide income for the long off-season, and hurricanes and other natural disasters have an enormous impact on the local economies. I did a story years ago on the Bonner Bridge and how residents couldn’t wait to see it go. I interviewed one man who said he drove with his windows down when crossing the bridge so he could escape easily once it collapsed around him and plunged him into the water. The new bridge is a welcome addition to the Outer Banks landscape, but, once again, I suspect the old struc-

ture is taking a verbal shellacking from locals and visitors alike. I guess it’s a sad irony that I remember when the Bonner Bridge opened and replaced a ferry that provided the only access to Hatteras Island. Back in those days, you had to really want to get to Hatteras to make the journey, but, in my mind, it was well worth it. The island’s appeal was its remote and unique nature, its other era type feel that didn’t fancy to tourists, but didn’t reject them either. It’s changed quite a bit since those days in the late 1960s. I liked it better the way it was, when Kentucky Fried Chicken was the only place to eat in Buxton. But, the appeal of the island

has only increased in the passing decades and now Hatteras is a prime vacation destination for millions of visitors each year. I can certainly appreciate why they love it. Somehow, it’s hard to comprehend how one man in a hard hat could darken the dreams and change all those vacation plans in one misguided swoop, but it reconfirms that life teaches us to always expect the unexpected. My neighbor tells me that explanation worked much better on him than it did on his 6-year-old. FYI, the power is back on Hatteras and Ocracoke Island for future visitors, or the many who are saying “Just wait until next year.”

Goochland getting ready on the links for ’17 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It is a new season for the Goochland Bulldogs golf team. And, as the season begins on Thursday against Cumberland and Prince Edward, coach AJ Nash said that he’s excited about how the team is beginning to shape up this year. “We’re deep,” he said.“We’ve

got three seniors that are playing in our top six. We have two returning sophomores who played top six last year and will play top six this year. We have one freshman who I expected to play top six. I’m excited.” Last season, the team fell 10 strokes short of a regional berth at the Conference 34 tournament. Peyton Butts, who shot a 79 in that tournament, returns for

the Bulldogs this season and was one of two golfers to qualify for last year’s region tournament. Jackson Raines was the other and he also returns this season as a sophomore. Junior Meghan Wright is another returning golfer for Goochland, who shot a 91 at the conference tournament last season as well as a 93 at the Central Zone qualifier for the girls state tournament.

Justin Falconer also returns with conference tournament experience. Nash said that his returners bring a special strength to the team. “They get along really well,” he said. “They’re a team that likes to have a lot of fun and enjoy each other’s company. They love the game of golf and have the potential to shoot some low scores and hopefully

make waves this season.” As far as the new members of the team, such as freshman Kyle Goff, the youth aspect of the team is something that Nash is embracing on his squad. “As I said, we have four seniors this year, so we’re going to graduate a bunch (next year),” he said. “It’ll be good for the two freshman and two sophomores that we have on

the team who aren’t playing to watch how they play high school golf for three or four years and how they handle themselves and their opponents. That’s something that I take pride in my teams. They’re all good sports.” Despite qualifying two golfers for the region tournament, Nash said there is definitely see Golf> 10

Roundup: New gym floor installed at GHS By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Students, fans and athletes alike will be treated to a new experience in the Goochland High School gym this school year. Over the summer, the floor was entirely replaced, complete with new designs and logos. “It’s completely fresh,” Goochland boys basketball coach Preston Gordon said. “Hardly anything looks the same.” Gordon said that as someone from Goochland, who played at the school and now coaches there, he took a special pride in documenting the process. Using the Goochland basketball Twitter account (@GoochlandBBall), Gordon took photos and updated everyone on the step-by-step progress of the new gym floor over the summer. The first post was on June 8, when the floor was bare wood and sanded. Over the next three phases, the wood was made ready for the stencils and graphics to be put on the floor. On June 22, “Phase 5” was marking out the lines for the basketball and volleyball courts. The next day, the art stencils for the Goochland “G” at center court, along with the Bulldog outside the 3point line and the Bulldogs wording along the boundaries in the middle of the floor were put down. On June 27, the painting of the floor art began. The final post was June 30, which showed the completed floor just miss-

Golf continued from >10 work to do for this season. “I think it can build,” he said. “We had a little bit of a disappointing season last year, in my opinion. We came in third in district and that’s not going to cut it this year. We’ve got to come in the top two to make it to regionals. I think everyone understanding each

ing the final sealing job. “The process was really cool to see,” Gordon said. Gordon’s posts on Facebook and Twitter had a secondary effect of really motivating his basketball players in particular to come out to the first open gym in September. “All the returning players are constantly asking when they get to play on it,” he said. “They all saw the photos on social media. They’re excited for open gym.” Replacing the gym floor was something that is typically done every 10-to-15 years, Gordon said. He also said that the county is replacing around 25 or 30 lights in the gym with new LED lights, which not only will help with lighting, but also save on electricity. “It’s going to be really nice,” he said.

Goochland High School’s new gym floor is complete and has a brand new design that has many people excited for its use.

MLB University of Virginia and Goochland High School graduate John Hicks has bounced between the Detroit Tigers and their AAA affiliate Toledo several times this season. Hicks started the season with the Mud Hens and has gone between the two teams 10 times this season since March 26. The shortest span was getting called up on May 20, then getting sent back down on May 22 only to have been called back up on May 26 until June 9. Hicks spent almost a month back down in AAA from June 28 through

July 31, when he was brought back up to the Tigers. In the three games he’s played in since the July 31 call-up, he’s certainly made his presence known. Against the New York Yankees on Aug. 1, he was 1 for 3 with a three-run home run in the win over the Bronx Bombers. He went 0-for-1 on Aug. 5 against the Baltimore Orioles, but had a much better day on Aug. 6 against the Orioles. Hicks went 3 for 4 with a double on Aug. 6. Through 75 games with the Tigers this season, he’s hitting .320 with four

home runs and 15 RBIs and has an on-base percentage of .346. He’s worked three walks and has only struck out 19 times. Behind the plate, Hicks has been solid. Over 120 innings, Hicks has 114 put outs, including nine assists and just one error. He has been a part of eight double plays, allowed two stolen bases and caught one runner stealing. Fellow Goochland product Justin Verlander was a popular talking point around the MLB trade deadline, but the 34-year-old remained with the team that drafted him in 2004 out of

Old Dominion. Verlander is 7-7 this season with a 4.20 ERA and is ranked 19th among American League pitchers in that category. Over 137 innings, he has 136 strikeouts and a 1.41 WHIP. His 4.20 ERA is his highest since 2014 when he ended the season with a 4.54 ERA. Verlander has allowed 17 home runs this year, a sharp drop off from the 30 homers allowed one year ago. Overall, Detroit is nine games under .500 this year and are nine games back of the first-place Cleveland Indians.

other, knowing the score, playing at a nicer course and knowing what we need to get done to make regionals and maybe states as a team…I think they could do it.” The realignment of the Virginia High School League is something that Nash is keeping at the forefront of his mind this year. “It’s definitely a concern,” he said. “To get to the state tournament as a

team, we have to get past RandolphHenry and a few other teams. Maggie Walker is in our region. Poquoson dropped down to (Class 2) and are in our region. I’m not sure what kind of team they are. The new alignment makes it tougher for us to make it to the state tournament as a team because we have to beat RandolphHenry to get there.” The Bulldogs will see Randolph-

Henry in back-to-back weeks early in the season. They’ll host the Statesman, as well as Nottoway at Hermitage Country Club on Aug. 17. Then, the next week, they’ll be in a tri-match with Central Lunenburg and Randolph-Henry on the road at Kenbridge Country Club. But first, Goochland will travel to The Manor to face off with the Eagles

and Dukes to open the year. “If we could be between 160 and 170 as a team, I’d be happy,” Nash said of the first match of the year. “That’s pretty attainable. Seeing 160 would be a great goal this season, maybe start at 167 or 168 and then work our way down from there.” Billy Fellin may be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter at @BillyFellin.
