Creekmore Group pulls request to rezone land Planning Commission had voted against plan to build self-storage facility and two office buildings By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland-based Creekmore Group, LLC has withdrawn a rezoning application that, if granted, would have allowed the group to construct a state-of-the-art self storage facility and two 5000 square foot office buildings on Patterson Ave near Route 288. The property, which is located in the county’s Designated Growth Area and Tuckahoe Creek Service District, adjoins three of the 36 Photo by Roslyn Ryan

t was an event nearly 100 years in the making, and, for around 3,000 Goochland students — including 7th grader Josh Boster, above — a very memorable way to kick off the brand new school year. On Monday afternoon, at around 2:30 p.m., students from all five Goochland County Schools streamed out of their classrooms and out onto parking lots, playgrounds and school lawns to witness the first solar eclipse of their lifetimes. And while Goochland’s location at the outer edge of the “path of totality” meant that the light level outside didn’t change that much, a celebratory whoop still went up from the crowd at the moment the moon completely blocked the sun. The viewing, which was enjoyed by students, teachers, administrators and local officials, including U.S. Rep. Dave Brat, R-7, was made possible by the Goochland Education Foundation. Goochland was the only school district in the Commonwealth of Virginia to hold a school district-wide viewing of the solar eclipse. For more photos from the eclipse viewing, see page 8.

with a petition against the rezoning signed by 121 county residents. Explaining their reasons for ultimately voting against the measure, commissioners focused on the size of the project and noted that it did not appear to be a good fit for the chosen location. District 4 representative John Shelhorse had recused himself from the voting and left the room before discussion of the matter began, citing the fact the he serves as the managing partner for Creekmore Group LLC. According to a statement released by Creekmore Group, LLC last week, the company both understood and accepted the Planning Commission’s decision. “The company advises that the rezoning request with specific, detailed proffers was prepared by its attorney, engineering and real estate advisors who presented the applications as consistent with the county’s Comprehensive Plan and in accordance with the requirements of the Entrance Corridor Overlay District,” the statement read, and went on to note that the plan as submitted was “less intrusive than the original development plan that had received a Certificate of Approval from the county,” referring to an earlier request to build five smaller office buildings that was approved but never constructed.

Ferguson, a fourth grade teacher, serves on several committees within the school district partnering to enhance the lives of all children. A lifetime member of the Goochland Fire-Rescue Department, she earned the 2009 ODEMSA Regional Award for Outstanding Pre-Hospital Educator. I am so excited to work together with our generous community to make this holiday season bright for our county’s families and their children.” Ferguson encourages local businesses, schools, churches and organizations to become actively involved and join her in supporting The Christmas Mother Association, which provides food, clothing and toys for children and families in need during the holiday season. “The board and I are delighted that Beth will represent our organization this year,” said Association President Cindie Valentine. “We are looking forward to working with her as she raises awareness of the needs in our community.” The Goochland Christmas Mother program has been serving the community since 1963. County marks one year of ‘Community Cares’ Contributed report
Goochland County and the Goochland County Office of Children’s Services recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of a groundbreaking resource for Goochland residents, the “Community Care” mobile app. In July 2016, the Office of Children’s Services made it easier for Goochland residents and professionals to access human services. The Community Care mobile app is a free resource that provides helpful information in an easy to read format. It is available to download for both Apple and Android devices by
searching “Community Care” in the device’s app store. Whether it’s help with parenting, disabilities, transportation, or substance abuse, the Community Care mobile app helps connect users to the right people who can provide assistance. The interactive app allows users to browse by category or search resource descriptions to learn how to get help. In addition, users can find where resources are located and pertinent contact information. The app is linked to maps, so that driving directions can be accessed simply by clicking on the address.
. “In the past year, more than 1,000 people have downloaded the Community Care Smartphone App,” said Mills Jones, Director of the Goochland County Office of Children’s Services. “In addition, numerous resources have been added to help with a variety of issues.” The Goochland County Office of Children’s Services would like to thank numerous agencies, businesses, and organizations for their help in promoting and providing access to the Community Care App. In particular, thank you to Goochland County Fire-Rescue & Chief William
MacKay, Goochland County Public Schools, Goochland Department of Social Services, GoochlandLibrary,Goochland County Office of Community Development, Goochland Powhatan Community Services, Goochland County Treasurer’s Office, and the Chickahominy Health District. Letters to the Editor Notion that hate groups should not be feared is incorrect
Contributed photo
A fond farewell for retiring local judge Goochland County was well represented at the recent gala retirement party for Judge Edward DeJ. Berry, right, held in Madison. Over 200 people gathered to celebrate Judge Berry’s 26 years on the bench in the Sixteenth Judicial District. Included in the Goochland team were court personnel, two retired Goochland Sheriff’s Deputies, and representatives from Goochland Social Services and Goochland CASA. There were stories told and lots of reminiscing. When it was Judge Berry s turn, he was most generous with his warm thoughts of Goochland County. Joining in the festivities were (pictured in the first row, from the left) Gail Proffit, Judge Deborah Tinsley, Kim Jefferson, Horace Herndon, Mary Catherine Herndon and Barbara Speas. In the back row, from the left, are John Casey, Dianne White, Lorraine Noel, Carol Johnston and Ann Casey. In attendance but absent from the photo was Tara Proffit.
In the wake of violence, rethinking our progress By Roslyn Ryan Editor
We’ve lost a lot in the days since the Aug. 11 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville grabbed the national spotlight. Among the most notable, to be certain, was the devastating loss of three lives. As no one needs to be reminded, you can disperse an angry
crowd, you can sweep up a street, and you can fix much of the cosmetic damage left behind after events like these, but there are some things that are heartbreakingly irreparable. The losses didn’t stop there. Those who had allowed themselves to think that hate groups no longer had much support — or at least that their members would forever be forced to slink about in the shadows — lost the comfort of that

To the Editor, In response to Roslyn Ryan’s editorial, “Driven by fear, hate groups will ultimately meet demise,” I offer these comments. I suppose it was easy to sit in your Goochland office and write about Charlottesville. Was it easy to describe Jason Kessler, the white supremacist leader as “lacking in eloquence and poise?” Easy to describe neo-Nazis and KKKers, carrying pistols, semiautomatics and torches, as “not terribly intimidating.” Easy to recognize the mobs “body language” as “simply playing at tough” and “scared threatened animals?” Real easy? Was it the same description that peaceful people at prayer, in a church and synagogue, used? On Friday night these torch-wielding, swastika flag wavers marched around these congregations chanting anti-Jewish and anti-black slogans. This was reminiscent of the Nazi era in Germany and the Jim Crow South. Ryan further characterizes these white supremacists as “isolated men who band together out of fear.” If one is not the target of these groups, I guess one may not feel fear. These men band together not out of fear but out of pure unadulterated hate. All men and women of conscience should fear these people. In the early years of Nazi Germany there were many who felt that this could not happen in a their land and the Nazis would “ultimately meet demise.” We should all remember the poem by Martin Niemoller in describing times during the Nazi era: First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— see Letters > page 7

GFCFS receives $750K from MEDARVA Contributed report
Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) has received a $750,000 grant from the MEDARVA Foundation and the West Creek Surgery Center. The MEDARVA grant will be used to create an endowment component of the organization’s ALL.HERE.NOW. Capital Campaign. The endowment goal, totaling $1.5 million, will support the future of the organization and the services it offers. The MEDARVA funds will be used to support the provision of health care services. The ALL.HERE.NOW. Capital Campaign also includes the construction of a new building that will house GFCFS’s 11 critical assistance programs, including medical and dental clinics, a food pantry, and the Clothes Closet, in one location. The existing main building will be converted into emergency housing.

In 2016, more than 1600 Goochland residents benefitted from GFCFS services. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services is a non-profit organization that provides access to health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. “We are proud of our relationship with the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services and are pleased to be able to fund the endowment,” said Bruce P. and Route 288. It was denied because of intense opposition of the nearby residents and the Commission s ruling that it did not appear to be a good fit for the location. I find it inconsistent that this same commission previously approved a rezoning just on the opposite corner with at least the same if not more objections from the local residents. Not only did they approve the rezoning, but they
released all easements as to building within the set parameters of Patterson Ave, basically giving a developer carte blanche approval to do as they wish. I find it strange when one project is approved with no constraints and another does not appear to be a good fit.” I wonder what was the difference? Dave Neel West Oak

But, unfortunately, we must remember that the freedom to be a damned fool is still Constitutionally protected. Of all the negative images and themes beamed into our homes since the rally, there was at least a small ray of hope amid the madness: over and over, people have been coming together to denounce divisiveness and hate. Like the statues or leave them, they say, we must do better than this. For the vast majority of us, it seems, our humanity remains intact. We may have lost an awful lot, but at least we still have that.

A measure of common sense appears to have been lost somewhere along the way as well — as evidenced by the fact that some people have been calling for one of the rally participants who was identified to be thrown out of school. All Goochland schools earn full accreditation Contributed report
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has released official results of state testing, and Goochland CountyPublicSchools(GCPS) continues to shine. Virginia public schools administer 29 state assessments each year, tests that are based on the the Commonwealth’s Standards of Learning (SOL). The results of these assessments, along with graduation rates, provide the framework for Virginia’s school accountability system and the VDOE’s School Quality Profiles. Once again, Goochland’s pass rates outpaced state aver-
ages by a comfortable margin: Goochland remains one of just a handful of school divisions in Virginia to have all of its schools meet full accreditation standards each of the last 10 years. While this distinction is determined by traditional achievement measures, school leaders believe it’s the division’s focus on what’s best for students that has led to the success. “Our mission to maximize the potential of every learner is at the heart of everything we do,” said Superintendent Jeremy Raley,. “Accountability
is important, but Goochland is far beyond a singular focus on minimum proficiency tests – and that’s really what the state’s SOL assessments are. We’re proud of the tradition of excellence in Goochland and we embrace the challenges of continuous improvement.” Stephen Geyer, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, described Goochland’s focus on student growth as a key to the division’s success. “We have definitively prioritized individual student growth over traditional achievement measures. Every child’s learning is important, and a
true sense of urgency should accompany that mindset. Our focus on individual growth ensures this urgency — and strong outcomes on traditional measures like SOL tests simply become a byproduct of doing what’s best for students. Our teachers have embraced this philosophy, and it’s their talents and commitment to our children that makes our division’s success possible.” Despite the school division’s exceptionally strong overall results, team members remain committed to continuing to elevate expectations, as well as to targeting areas of relative weakness.
“While we certainly have a lot to celebrate, we face the same challenges that most school divisions across the state and nation face when it comes to achievement gaps for our students with disabilities and our African American students,” Raley said. “We have made some great progress in these areas, especially recently, but we have more work to do. We are committed to closing these gaps, while continuing to raise the bar for every student.” Goochland’s math results have have increased by six percentage points over the past three years for African
American students, while math results for students with disabilities followed a similar impressive trend: increasing by five percentage points over the same time period. However, Goochland’s reading results declined by three percentage points since last year for the division’s African American students, while reading results for students with disabilities showed a slight increase of two percentage points. The school division plans to present its annual comprehensive data report to the School Board at its Sept. 12 public meeting.

For WWII vet, photos bring back memories By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Seven decades is a long time to hold on to anything, even memories. So when Marley “Buster” White wants to reflect on his days as an aircraft mechanic on the small island of Saipan during WWII, he pulls out his cherished photo album, sits back, and slips back into the past. There, among the pages of the book he made himself from whatever he could find around the base, are dozens of black and white photos bearing witness to the time he spent helping keep American pilots in the air as part of the 498 Bombardment Group. Fastened neatly to the black
paper pages are photos of the men he served with, many of whom would become good friends. There are also photos of the planes he worked on, massive B-29 bombers (most with lovely ladies painted on the nose, and nicknames like Sleepy Time Girl). There are scenic shots too, including those of Japanese cities that had been leveled as part of a war effort that would ultimately end in an Allied victory, thanks largely to the use of a weapon more powerful than anything the world had ever seen. White remembers learning about a new kind of bomb that the Americans were preparing see White > 11

White, who was born in upstate New York but moved with his family to Wilmington, North Carolina, as a boy, spent his childhood learning to farm and to fix things, including the Model Ts that would serve as his entry into the world of mechanics. Drafted into the Army in 1943, he would ultimately spend a total of 17 months, 6 days and 13 hours in the service. He remembers himself and a buddy setting up their own make-shift darkroom to develop film for themselves and their fellow soldiers, and he remembers the Japanese planes that would fly in and strafe the base without warning. White remains proud of his time in the service, though like most people of his generation you probably won’t hear him talking too much about it. The Goochland Bulldogs’football team has sharpened its skills in scrimmages against Hanover and Monticello in preparation for the season opener on Aug. 25 against Thomas Jefferson High School at home.
Goochland ready for season opener against TJ By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It has been a long offseason since the Goochland Bulldogs last played a football game. But, after a summer full of work and dedication as well as two scrimmage games, the Bulldogs are ready for their
season and home opener on Aug. 25 against Thomas Jefferson. “We’re getting there slowly, but surely,” Goochland head coach Joe Fowler said. “We had two competitive scrimmages against Hanover and Monticello. We really feel like those scrimmages are really
going to prepare us for our first three games, which are three of the toughest games of the season. We improved exponentially from Hanover to Monticello and hopefully we’ll improve exponentially from Monticello to this game against TJ.” Hanover and Monticello
are outside of the Bulldogs’ Class 2, which is certainly a benefit as scrimmage opponents in terms of development of the players. “It gives our kids confidence knowing that they’re going up against kids from schools twice as big as ours,” Fowlers said. “If our kids believe they can
compete with schools twice our size, with storied histories in football like Hanover and Monticello, then it gives them confidence as we get into the regular season.” The Bulldogs biggest loss from last season was on the offensive side of the ball. Of the 11 starters from last season,
nine graduated. Fowler basically has an entirely new offense that needs to learn the nuances and details of the schemes they need to run. “The offense is a slower process,” he said. “We are replacing nine starters and see Football> 13

Roundup: Goochland represents Va. in World Series By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland coach pitch AllStars had fortune on their side even before the Virginia state tournament began. Dixie Baseball started the coach pitch league about five years ago, according to Goochland manager Daniel Hicks. The districts around Virginia rotate on which one gets to take two teams to the state tournament. This season, Goochland finished second in the district, but it was their districts’ turn to take two teams to the next level. The team made the most of the opportunity, as the team would go on to win the state tournament and go on to represent Virginia at the Dixie Coach Pitch World Series. After spending the three weeks post-district tournament practicing, specifically on defense, the team entered the state tournament as prepared as they could be. Goochland faced off against Timberlake in the first game of the state tournament. “We lost the first game in the state tournament and then we fought our way through the loser’s bracket,” Hicks said. Later in the tournament, Goochland saw Timberlake once again and defeated them to advance.
Football continued from >12 one of the returning starters hasn’t played in either scrimmage. He had an injury. We hope to get him back for the first game. We have almost a whole new offensive line and a whole new backfield. We aren’t as far along as we were this time last year, but we had veterans last year. But, the kids are picking it up the ins and outs of things and hopefully we’ll keep get-
Then, there was a draw for a bye and fortune smiled on Goochland once again as they drew the bye position. After the bye, Goochland faced Buckingham in the Virginia state tournament final. Buckingham had defeated Goochland in the district final, but Goochland turned the tables on Buckingham in the state final, winning 17-10 and securing the state title. “We knew they had the talent to do it,” Hicks said. “After that Timberlake game that we lost, something clicked and after that we played spotless defense. We managed to run back through it. These are seven and eight-year-olds. We had a couple of six and seven-year-olds on the team. Three of them had already turned nine and we had five eight-year-olds. That’s the thing with this age group. I mean, thirty minutes after the (state championship game), (the players) were running around and having fun. They don’t know pressure at this age group. The good thing about this tournament is its double elimination.” As Virginia was one of the last states to complete the state tournaments, the Goochland kids didn’t have much time to try and fundraise to help get the team to the World Series in Ohio. “People came together and raise enough money to go and so it wasn’t
too troubling for the families,” Hicks said. “It shows how good of a place Goochland is.” When the team got to Cleveland for the World Series and began play, it didn’t go very well for the youngsters from Goochland. “Once we got to the World Series, we didn’t play that great,” Hicks said. “They were a little overwhelmed. We were going up against other states, where they had 18 or 19 teams to choose from in the regular season. They had an American and National league All-Star teams for those age groups.” Hicks said that one other coach said that his team had players who all had already turned nine-years-old and had been playing together for two years. Conversely, Hicks said that Goochland had six teams in the regular season to choose from and had been together for just 10 weeks. But, Hicks was incredibly pleased with how the team performed throughout their run. “We were by far the underdog,” he said. “Everyone there figured that Timberlake or Buckingham would be the team that won it all and would represent Virginia in the World Series. It all came together at once. They played as good as they can play. It was fun to watch their expression. Even after they won I don’t think they realized what they had done. They were
being kids have fun and playing well.” One key aspect of the team was the defense on which they had worked so hard on prior to the state tournament. “Once you get to the state tournament, you know you’re going to have a lot of balls hit to the outfield,” Hicks said. “We were fortunate enough that our outfield was set up. In the championship game, we caught like four fly balls out to the outfield and turned three double plays. We were in a little bit of awe.”
The Bulldogs took down Nottoway and Prince Edward 167-196-231 on Aug. 17. Peyton Butts was the low score for the Bulldogs with a two-over 38. Jackson Raines shot a four-over 40, Kyle Goff shot an eight-over 44 and Justin Falconer shot a nine-over 45. On Aug. 18, Goochland finished second with a 185 to RandolphHenry’s 163. Raines shot a four-over 40.
ting better and better.” Once again this season, the defense will be a unit to feat for Goochland, especially in the secondary. “Defensively, we fly around and we fly to the ball,” Fowler said. “We’re fast. Our (defensive backs) are a smart group of kids. They’re book smart, they’re football smart. They’ve got some savvy on the field. We took some lumps early last year for playing young kids. This year, those sophomores are now second-year juniors
and they understand the ins-and-outs of the defense and we’re able to react quickly.” Last season, the Bulldogs defense carried the day in the opener against Essex, scoring two touchdowns and kept the Trojans off the scoreboard. Given the familiarity the Bulldogs have with the defense being relied upon early, it is a comfortable situation for the team to be in around the opening of the season this year. “It might be a lot of the same,”
Fowler said. “The defense is gonna carry us. I think we’re going to be really, really good on special teams. The fact that we played a benefit game against Monticello, we did special teams in that game and that’s going to help us going into our first game because we had to install it a week earlier. TJ didn’t play a benefit game, so they might not have installed their special teams yet.” Fowler said the team expects to be practicing again on Thanksgiving
again this year, which would mean another deep playoff run for the Bulldogs. “Last year, we played on the day after Thanksgiving and won and got to go to the state semifinals,” he said. “We expect to do that again. Our goal is to make it to the state final and win another state championship. We have the kids to do it. We have to stay healthy and the ball has to bounce our way a few times throughout the year. But, I think we can do it.”
