For local scientist, new discoveries always await the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Short Pump, talking toys. He had agreed to meet there for an interview about his groundbreaking work in the field of polymer science, his many patents, and the numerous honors and awards he has received. But now, after patiently sharing the details of his educational and professional background for the better part of an hour, his attention has been captured by a wooden train set affixed to By Roslyn Ryan a table in the children’s section of the store. “Maybe I could make one?” he says, running a finger along the brightly painted surface of the table on which the train tracks are mounted. He chats cheerfully with the children’s father about what a wonderful toy it is, and how smart it was that the set’s designers secured the tracks to the table so kids can’t scatter them everywhere. Construction on Free Clinic building GHS Drama students bringing the ‘Horror’ ahead of schedule Staff could move into new facility by early 2018 By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Six months after breaking ground on a new, 20,000square-foot facility on River Road, staff and clients of Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services have a projected move-in date within their sites. According to GFCFS Executive Director Sally Graham, construction on the building, which will allow the
organization to finally bring all of its 11 programs under one roof, is actually ahead of schedule. “It’s going great,” Graham said last week, adding that the much of the drywall and interior systems have now been installed. The next few months will be focused on completing the interior work and getting the space ready to welcome GFCFS clients. A nonprofit focused on providing food, medical care and emergency shelter to Goochland residents in need, GFCS was formed see Free Clinic > 7

as good as it gets. He is amiable, curious, and captivated by the world around him, even the things others might not notice. Describing the passion he has for discovering new things, Mishra said he has simply always been that way. “When I don’t know things, I try to ask,” he said, smiling. “I always try to seek out information.” Born in India, Mishra earned his PhD in Polymer Science before completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the

Executive management training would follow at the Disney School of Management, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania, before he completed the Mini MBA program at the University of Richmond in 2011. closure.” As Mishra explains it, being an inventor carries with it an inherent duty to serve. “As scientists, we have a responsibility to society,” he said. “Either you can bring new products and new ideas that help mankind, you can develop products for your company, or you can create innovation — maybe not necessarily something that will change things in my life, but something someone can come in and build on.” *** As a general rule, Mishra doesn’t often sit still. It just doesn’t suit him, he laughed, explaining that he enjoys staying busy. When he isn’t working, he can often be found spending time with family, tinkering with this or that, or woodworking. He and his wife love visiting the National Parks, he said, and he also spends time volunteering in the community on his own and with Richmond Temple. Asked about his experience as an immigrant to the United States, particularly as immigration remains a hot button issue in much of the country, Mishra said he had never felt slighted by anyone or made to feel inferior because he was not born here. Still, he said, he sees the current antipathy some feel towards immigrants as “unwarranted.” “We must really learn to respect each other,” Mishra said. “Our differences make us very strong, and America was built on all these differences.”
Mishra said he still loves his adopted homeland as much as he did when he was growing up, back when he was fascinated by life in the U.S. and dreamed of coming here (he became a citizen in 1996). This is where he feels at home, he says, and where he has proudly raised his family. Though his two children have now grown up and begun forging their own paths, they have also inherited his and his wife’s passion for the sciences (she also earned a PhD in polymer science): Mishra’s daughter is a pharmacist and his son will soon graduate from medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University. The day his son graduates will be a tremendously proud one for him, Mishra said, but he insists he would have been just as happy to see his children find success in whatever field they chose. People’s lives after all, like polymers, can take so many different forms. “We need all kinds to stay in harmony,” Mishra said. “If everybody just loved science we would be in big trouble actually. We need all of it.” Always in motion, Mishra is currently working on another textbook to be added to the eight he has already published, as well as serving as Editor in Chief for two international journals focused on polymer science. As Mishra describes his work, he comes back again and again to the idea of stepping

stones, things left behind that others can use to advance their own journeys of discovery. “Every human being, we are not permanent,” Mishra said. “Knowing that you have left something behind for others — that is the best kind of happiness you can have.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
On second thought: Reconsidering what we ‘know’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I’m not quite sure if the English language has a word for this — and, if it does, I don’t know it— but I’ve been looking these past few days to find a term that accurately captures the following: that moment when something dawns on you that you probably should have picked up on much earlier, a sort of understanding tinged with embarrassment. I felt it after the election of Donald Trump, after the many postmortems I listened to, when I began to understand just how many people felt prior to the election that they were living in a country that had not been listen-
ing to them. More than a few described a feeling that they had been marginalized, that their values were not seen as important, and that the problems they faced didn’t seem to matter much to the liberal elites running the show. I’m certainly not going to launch a debate here about why they felt the way they did, or who was to blame for it, but the fact that they did feel that way — and that it had gone unnoticed or unrecognized by so many — seemed of no small consequence. It was the reason, many will tell you, that Donald Trump won the election, and the reason he continues to enjoy a strong base of support. Oddly enough, that sense of
having missed something for far too long visited me again recently, during a conversation with a friend who would like to see the famed Lee monument removed from Monument Avenue and relocated to a site where it would be more appropriate, perhaps a museum, or Lee’s childhood home. My friend is as diplomatic a person as you are ever likely to find, and not one to rock the proverbial boat. So when he, an African-American and fellow native Richmonder, said that he had always found the monument’s prominent location offensive, it gave me pause. How, I wondered, had I never considered how a towering statue of a Confederate general might
inhibit a black Richmonder’s chance of feeling as though they were equal and included members of the community? How had I missed that? In the end, I’m not sure. I suppose many of us simply wake up every day, to a certain extent, knowing what we know and blocking out the rest. I’m not pretending I know how to solve the monument issue, or saying that I believe one side is right and the other side is wrong. All I’m pointing out is that, as in so many other of life’s endeavors, listening a little more and carefully examining our own positions and ideas might be our only hope of actually finding a path forward. It’s at least worth a try.
Lemonade, anyone? RES students help raise funds for Goochland’s Christmas Mother effort On Friday, Sept. 8, Noah Wensell, Jack Jones, and Noah Jones took it upon themselves to raise money for the Christmas Mother by hosting a lemonade stand. According to Christmas Mother Elizabeth Ferguson, the gesture was the perfect way to show off the values the three have learned at Randolph Elementary School. Contributed photo

Coach to Cure event spotlights smallest of the Bulldogs By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
For some, it’s the most important game of the season. Coaches from across the nation will don special arm patches this weekend to promote a partnership that couples amazing athletes at the top of their game with children with a devastating form of muscular dystrophy called Duchenne. In 2008, the American Football Coaches Association teamed with the Parents Project for Muscular Dystrophy to raise money and awareness for a disease that cuts short the lives of hundreds of innocent victims each year. During this special weekend, colleges and high schools host families with children who are impacted by the disease, and players interact with kids with MD and learn of the daily struggles that face each of these special children. When my son was diagnosed with Duchenne seven years ago, one of the first people who offered his support was Goochland football coach Joe Fowler. He organized and hosted the school’s first Coach to Cure event, and made Jack a part of the Bulldog family … and supplied him with a lifetime of teammates. Over the years, Jack and his teammates have enjoyed their fair share of successes and also faced some adversity. Memories made with this special group of athletes remain vivid, and, somehow, their victories have become part of Jack’s story of struggle. see Coach to Cure > page 10

While its goal has been to provide for Goochland residents who would otherwise go without, that mission has been made more difficult in recent years by aging, cramped facilities spread out over several locations. In April of 2016, the organization launched its ALL.HERE. NOW capital campaign with the goal of raising $5.9 million
for the project. Graham said one early conversation GFCFS board members had centered on making sure that the public understood their mission and how the new facility could help them further it. “It wasn’t just that we wanted a big new building, Graham said, rather that they wanted to be able to provide the level of service and support their clients deserve. Graham said the excitement among those clients has been palpable, particularly among those who currently have to
travel numerous locations to access the services they need. Having everything under one roof will be a beautiful thing, she said, It isn’t, however, the only thing. Last Friday, as work continued on the facility, Graham was careful to make sure that the true focus of the project isn’t overlooked. The new building is a dream come true, she said, but at the end of the day “it’s not really about the building. It’s about what is going to happen inside.

Coach to Cure continued from >6 Throughout those years, Jack has learned a lot from players who understand that life’s victories extend further than the goal line. When they run, jump, score, and excel on the field, they do so with the full awareness that there are children who can’t do any of those things. And I’d like to think that the players have learned a real lesson of life by welcoming Jack into their fold. The compassion and kindness they offer Jack indicates that they do. Looking back on the difficult years since Jack’s diagnosis, I could write a book on how my life has changed. Everyday occurrences often taken for granted are now appreciated gifts, and the smallest things in life now often seem like the

largest. I’ve learned that blessings often arrive in damaged packages, but the goodness of heart and the strongest of wills cannot be weakened by a muscle debilitating disease. I’ve watched a son who chooses not to complain or wallow in the many things denied to him … a small boy who struggles to walk but never fails to inspire. I’ve learned that compassion is a sign of strength, and hope is a noble goal. Jack reminds me numerous times each day that life is precious, and heroes come in different sizes. As we prepare for a special weekend on Oct. 6 at Goochland High School, my mind wanders back through those years when Jack walked with his teammates to the center of the field for the opening coin toss. This year marks the first time Jack won’t be able to make that walk, but he’ll be there with his teammates as they again make his mission theirs … and run a little faster because one of their team-
mates cannot. The weekend also reminds me that our family is not in this struggle alone, and people like Joe, his staff and players and the Goochland community have long memories and kind hearts. Their support and friendship as we navigate these tough waters have provided immeasurable peace of mind and support. You’ll notice that no player wears the number one on their jersey when the Bulldogs take the field for this year’s Coach to Cure game against Buckingham. Since Jack’s diagnosis, that numeral has been reserved for the littlest member of the Bulldog team — a fitting and appropriate designation for someone who is an all star in every aspect. Join us for an evening of football and hope at Goochland on Oct. 6, and thanks to Coach Fowler, his staff and players and the many supporters in Goochland who make this event possible each year. Go Bulldogs and here’s to you, Jack. You are my hero.

Wonderling, Lachniet keep Bulldogs on track
Photos by Billy Fellin
Goochland’s Trinity Wonderling (left, No. 8) and Kealie Lachniet (right) play setter and libero, respectively, for the Bulldogs volleyball team. The two are described as the glue that keeps the offense together and running smoothly.
By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Long before the ball is slammed into gym floors all across the James River District by Alexis Wiggins or Maddie Goff, it goes through a passing process. Typically, Kealie Lachniet will have gotten a dig and tossed it toward setter Trinity Wonderling. Wonderling will then put the ball in optimal position for Wiggins or Goff. It seems like an easy system, but it certainly isn’t and takes practice and skill to get the ball where it needs to be over and over again.
“Volleyball just in general is hard,” Bulldogs coach Jennifer Erixon said. “I think a setter has one of the hardest jobs, if not the hardest job, and the libero is right behind her. The libero controls the entire back court and you want her to touch every ball that comes over that net that she can. But, the pass has to be there. My setter is just like the quarterback in football. She needs to run the offense and put the ball exactly where it needs to be.” Lachniet is one of seven seniors on the Bulldogs team and all seven of them are hardened veterans who have been to the pinnacle of competition and came away with the state
championship in 2015. “I just get into the game,” she said of playing her position. “I don’t think of anything else. I just read the hitter and go for the ball.” She also used to play setter, which she said does share some commonality with her current position. “I think they have a lot in common,” she said. “You have a lot of leadership of the game.” Lachniet said that she loves when she faces a hitter who can bring it on the attack so she can get serious digs on the defensive side. “I love when we face someone who can really hit the ball,” she said. “It makes it so
much more fun. It’s especially fun when you get that dig on the complete other side of the court (against a strong hitter.)” Lachniet had 17 digs against Collegiate on Sept. 18. Wonderling said that her position entails “a lot of running” as well as being hyperaware of the court state. “You always have to know where the ball is,” she said. “You have to know who your hitters are how to set them differently.” Against Collegiate, Wonderling recorded 29 assists, four aces and three kills. On Sept. 14 against Bluestone, she had 33 assists, 12 digs and four aces.
The sophomore said that she was called into the role this year after being asked to set by Erixon. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “I like the experience.” Wonderling has been playing since she was in sixth grade and was also on the middle school team as well. She said that she has a clear goal in mind for this season. “I want to be more aggressive at setter,” she said. Lachniet, on the other hand, wants another ring. “We all really want to go back,” she said. “(Getting another ring) would mean the world. It would be awesome. I think we can. It’s about being
able to play in those tough playoff games and keep out of our own heads and not get scared.” Erixon had nothing but praise for her young setter and experienced libero. “Kealie is rock solid,” she said. “Passing is on a threepoint-oh scale and she’s averaging a two-point-four, which is awesome. Trinity is one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had. She always wants that feedback. She always wants to do better and wants to be better. She’s incredibly coachable. She wants to win. The two of them, in that combination, is definitely a good aspect of the game for us.”

The team went undefeated during the two-day tournament, winning 5-4 in the championship match. The team is coached by Brian Raugh, Mike Team, Steve Geyer, and Carlos Valdez. Bulldogs XC wins home quad-meet By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s cross country teams each posted dominating results on Sept. 20 in a home quad meet with Amelia, Randolph-Henry and Cumberland. The Bulldogs girls team won handily, scoring 18 points to Amelia’s 76 and Randolph-Henry’s 77. Cumberland placed four runners in the top 25, but did not have enough runners to qualify for a score. On the boys side, the Bulldogs also won, scoring 39 points. Cumberland scored 43, followed by RandolphHenry with 77 and Amelia with 99.
Coach Henry Jones said that he’s confident both teams will have strong seasons this year. “From what we’ve seen so far, both teams are looking pretty good,” he said. “The girls are looking the strongest we’ve seen in many years.” Jones said that on Sept. 16, the Bulldogs took the top seven runners on both teams and competed at Collegiate. The Goochland girls finished fourth overall, while the boys finished seventh overall. “It’s starting to look like a really good year,” Jones said. “Both teams are young. The boys lost seven or eight seniors last year and five of those
seniors were in the top ten. On the girls team, the majority of them are freshman and sophomores.” Filling the gaps in experience is the tricky thing that the teams will need to navigate this year. “It’s tricky,” Jones said. “For the boys, those seniors were the cement of the team. Austin Bruce, a senior this year, leads by example. When you see someone like that, everyone else falls in place.” Jones said he hopes the girls team will make it to the state meet, which would be a first for the Bulldogs proPhoto by Billy Fellin gram. The boys team gets better as the season goes on, he said, and kicks it Goochland’s girls cross country team starts the race on Sept. 20 against Amelia, Randolph-Henry and Cumberland. The Bulldogs girls team rolled in the meet. up a notch in the playoffs.
