The four c ommission members in attendance (District 4 representative John Shelhorse was unable t o attend the meeting) voted unanimously on Sept. 7 t o recommend approval of a planned increase to the footpr int of the c hurch, which is located at 2850 Maidens Road at the intersection of Maidens Road and Broad Street Road. The expansion, which pastor Mike Hennigan explained will allow the church to accommodate its growing membership, will eventually include a 500-seat audit orium, additional office space, and parking for 180 vehicles. It will untimely add an additional 37,000 square feet t o the cur rent 4,000 square foot structure. Hennigan told the commissioners that the church has taken pains to ensure that the project will not place any undue burden on residents living nearby, and hopes that the addition of walking paths, a pavilion, and gar den spaces will help enhanc e see Church > 2

Boys, Girls State participants share highlights from program Contributed report
Motivated, energized and informed — that was ho w the students who att ended Boys State and Girls Stat e this past June described how they felt at the conclusion of the program. Fresh from that e xperience, Benedictine C ollege Preparatory’s Tyler St. Claire and Andrew Craven recently joined Jack Paone and M aben Hite from Goochland High School to share their thoug hts about the e xperience with Legion Post 215 members and guests.
Highlights the y oung men discussed from their time at Radford University included meeting fellow students fr om all around the state and enjoying presentations from a var iety of speakers. Goochland High School’s Alexis Wiggins, Emma Holcombe, and Daneka Fowler then spoke of their w eek at Longwood University. Learning how to put go vernment into action was important to them, they said, as was building leadership and making friends. The week-long program
provided all the students insights into the w orkings of government and ho w it functions, especially as the students ran for political positions and won offices as C ity Mayor, Delegate, General Assembly member and City Chaplain. Special thanks go t o Jim Woodfin and Jerry Netherland, both from Post 215, who were counselors at Bo ys State for the week. Funding for these programs is pr ovided by the American Legion family of Post 215 and a g rant from Goochland’s Lions Club.

This probably won’t come as a shock to many, but I ha ve always been — and lik ely always will be — a fan of newspapers. I loved them when I started my own at age 8 (a folksy sort of publication that enjo yed an enthusiastic readership numbering in the t ens — some of them not even related to me), and continued to love them a few years later, when I became a newspaper car rier in Westchester County, New York. Had I not e ventually landed in a newsroom (perhaps the Good Lord’s gift to me for deli vering all those newspapers on foot dur ing the frigid New York winters), I know I would still find the world of newspapers a fascinating one, and journalists would still be among my heroes. I love newspapers in a wa y that I sometimes find difficult t o explain. But, this being N ational Newspaper Week, I’ll give it a go. Having been ar ound for over 2,000 years, newspapers ha ve always played a r ole in c onnecting people with the world around them, as w ell as helping to organize the whirl wind of events big and small that make up our shared experience. Because of its focus on a sing le day (or week, in the Gazette’s case) I have always found a single newspaper issue to be among the most perfect tools for captur ing what a population valued at any given Pick up an American newspaper from 1863, or from 1929, or fr om 2001, and take a look at what was on the front page. continued from >6 We arrived only slig htly behind schedule, and pre-wedding photos, girl giddiness and final instructions proceeded without a hitch. After the photographer took some final shots of the bride, it was time for all t o retreat to their assigned spots. The wedding was held beside a pool in a pr ivate residence that someone had tak en hours to decorate, transforming the space into a magical and idyllic oasis of unique lights, open fire pits and a unique altar set at the end of the pool. I was assig ned to a spot right outside the r ear entrance to the house, a door that would soon open and expose the prettiest bride that I’ ve ever seen — a stat ement made w ith a self-admitted bias and an e ven larger amount of pride. And all of those mental tricks to stay steady and unmoved flew out the w indow with my first glance at my daughter as she entered. My eyes immediately filled, lips trembled, and knees weakened. The sight of that beautiful child, my first born, literally took my breath away and, for a moment, I couldn’t move. Somehow, I e xtended my hand and esc orted her do wn

the steps where we joined her mother for a walk t o the altar that paralleled the length of the pool with me on the business side closest to the pool. “Don’t push me,” I said as we met m y ex-wife to begin the walk. I’m not sur e if either of them saw my tears, but I quickly gathered myself and made the walk. Looking up , I was greeted with the v ision of my three other c hildren, my sister and her family standing at the altar waiting for our arrival. The steps went slowly. I think it’s designed that way to allow parents to inhale the last breaths of children who no w embark on a life of their own. Sure, life w ill be special and filled with memories of a different kind, but it will never be the same. Somehow, with my daughter on my arm and the people I loved the most sur rounding me, I finally took time to enjoy the love and joy of such a special occasion. It was a unique c eremony with a special message of friendship and lo ve combined with numerous moments of self-deprecating humor. “I told you this was the first time I’ve done this,” the officiating guy laughed as he studied his iPad for the next comments. I suppose you had to be there,

but it w orked and most folks said it was a special memor y for them as well. As the c eremony ended, I hugged Jaime with dry eyes and a big smile and t old her I felt like the l uckiest father in the world. I then headed o ver to hug my son-in-law. As we embraced, I noticed the st reams of tears on his fac e. Either we’re both babies, or w e both shar e an undying love for J aime. The tears affirmed the latt er and confirmed something I already know. Kent and m y daughter love each other, and w e love him. They have endured trials and tribulations to make their dream come true, and their lives will be special and full of wonderful memories … and hopefully full of babies. Now, I’m not ad vocating that w e all should par ade around with unchecked emotions, but t rying to suppress them is pr obably not a good idea. It also r eaffirms something I hope I alr eady knew — that sometimes it’s OK t o let y our heart take priority over your head, and shed a few tears. And, for those of you who thought this c olumn would end with a ner vous old father falling in to the pool, I hate to disappoint you but I left hig h and dry, and extremely proud.

Goochland remains undefeated after 24-7 win By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Goochland took its p erfect record on the r oad last w eek and emerged with a 24-7 victory against James River District foe Buckingham. The teams traded three and outs as the first half began, but the Knights got their first break when they picked off a De vin
McCray pass that set them up around midfield. But, a sting y Goochland defense that has y ielded less than two dozen points all year, stepped up and eliminated the threat. Goochland mounted a steady drive on the ne xt series and shortly before the quar ter ended, Perry Snead swept around end for an 11-y ard
touchdown run, making the score 7-0. The Bulldog special t eams cashed in their first t oken of the night when the y forced a shanked punt in the sec ond quarter, and John King put the final touches on the team’s second score of the evening with a four yard run. Even with the team up 140, GHS c oach Joe Fowler said
he wasn’t getting the offensi ve output he expected. “We came out flat and played that wa y for most of four quarters,” Fowler said. Cole Nuckols ended the next Knights drive with an interception that produced three more points as Zach Gordon booted a 27 yard field goal t o put the visitors up 17-0 at the half. Late in the thir d quarter,
Buckingham threatened deep in Bulldog territory, but, again, the defense w ouldn’t budge and finally forced a bot ched field goal attempt. Perry Snead and King provided the final fireworks with a blocked punt midway through the fourth quarter when the pair blocked a punt and S nead covered the final y ards for a final score making the sc ore

The Knights managed a face-saving score to avoid the shutout on their final dr ive putting the final tally at 24-7 and giving the B ulldogs their fifth win of the season. “It’s always great to get a win on the r oad, especially at Buckingham,” Fowler said. “But we are disappointed with see Football> 13

Fundraiser Oct. 7 honors deputy killed in 2014 crash By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Ask those who knew R ockville native Gabriel Pearce, a H enrico County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed in a t ragic automobile crash in 2014, and the y will tell you how strongly he believed in education. It was a h uge part of who he was, said his sist er, Alisa Pearce, and wh y
the family w ill once again honor his legacy by organizing the Gabriel Pearce Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser and Fall Festival. The event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 7 at Ber ea Baptist Church, will feature craft vendors, a silent auction, raffles, music and food, and will help raise funds for the scholarship given annually to a rising senior planning to attend Virginia
Commonwealth University. According to Alisa, her br other had recently graduated magna cum laude from VCU with a double major in Criminal Justice and H omeland Security when he was killed in the early morning hours of June 26, 2014, after losing c ontrol of his v ehicle on Rockville Road. He was just 22 y ears old. His goal, she explained, was to pay
off some of his student loans befor e eventually returning to school to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. “He was suc h a good gu y,” said Pearce, who has helped organiz e the event for the last four y ears. It takes a lot of work to pull the e vent together, she admitted, but added that it is always worth it when the y are able to present the ann ual award in her
brother’s honor. Last year, a c heck for $2,500 was awarded to high school senior Gunner Hicks. For more information on the annual Gabriel Pearce Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser and F all Festival, visit gpfundraiser.weebly. com. Tips for keeping carved pumpkins perfect until Halloween night arrives Contributed report
J
ack-o-lanterns and other carved pumpkin designs are frequently the c enterpieces of Halloween festivities. The tw inkling lights and orange glow of jack-olanterns can add ambianc e to any autumn e vent. The trouble with carving pumpkins is that most people want to do it r ight away, only t o discover their pumpkins wilt and deca y long befor e Halloween. Nothing ruins Halloween more than v isiting a home to trick-or-treat and not getting candy. Equally disappointing is a sad pumpkin display withering away on a front porch. Even though all pumpkins will eventually rot, certain tips can keep carvings from collapsing too soon. Choose a sturdy pumpkin. Inspect the pumpkin of your choosing carefully, looking for gouges, spots and holes. Even a smal l blemish can quickly e xpand into a mushy mess. Select pumpkins with even color and firm
flesh, and make sure that the pumpkin doesnÕt feel tender when you push on the skin. Visit local pumpkin stands. Pumpkins that ha ve been shipped miles and miles in hot cargo t rucks may be overly ripened or batt ered. Pumpkins that w ere grown nearby may be fr esher. Plus, buying pumpkins locally supports local farmers. Scrape the insides of the pumpkin thoroughly. Any moist bits inside the pumpkin will mold quickly . The pumpkin carving experts at Pumpkin Masters recommend scraping as m uch of the “guts” out as possible, leaving about a one-inc h thickness of the wall of the pumpkin. Coat the pumpkin. Preservation methods ma y aim to keep the pumpkin hydrated and inhibit mold and other micr obial growth. Commercially sold pumpkin preservation products, such as Pumpkin Fresh¨, hold up well. Soaking and spr aying carved pumpkins w ith a bleach-and-water solu-
tion also seems t o preserve designs. Keep it out of the elements. Store carved pumpkins in a cool, dry place. This will help slow down the rotting process for pumpkins exposed to outdoor fungi, other microbes and war m sunlight. Use an ar tificial light source. Reduce the heat inside of the pumpkin and enc ourage hydration by selecting a battery-powered light instead of a lit cand le to illuminate the carving. Skip the car ving. Once pumpkin skin is c ompromised, microbes can ent er. In lieu of carving, paint or decorate pumpkins in other ways if you want them to stay fresh for a long time. Glow in the dar k paint can help pumpkins stand out at night. Carved pumpkins ma y last a w eek or tw o, while uncut pumpkins can last for a month or mor e. Keeping pumpkins hydrated and mold-free will prolong your designs. — MetroCreative
