hen it comes to welcoming fall, most of us know exactly what to do. Falling leaves? Rake them up. Big fat pumpkins? Carve them up. Delicious fresh-made apple pies? Serve them up.

But when it comes to one particularly plentiful part of the autumn season, most of us aren’t quite sure what to do. We’re talking here, of course, about acorns, those oak tree seeds so popular with squirrels, birds and deer. Walk a few steps into just about any wooded area, and you’ll likely find a surfeit of these capped curiosities scattered all over the ground. see Acorns > 3
Goochland implements voluntary water restrictions Contributed report
On Tuesday, Oct.10, 2017, Goochland County, along with the City of Richmond, Henrico County, Hanover County, Chesterfield County, and Powhatan County are implementing voluntary water conservation measures. In accordance with Richmond’s James
River Regional Flow Management Plan, when water levels drop to 1,200 cfs (cubic feet per second) or 3 ½ to 3 ¾ feet in depth at the Westham Gauge, voluntary conservation measures are implemented. Voluntary compliance of area customers will assist water treatment plants in the city of Richmond, Chesterfield
County and Henrico County in providing water to all customers in the region while also meeting the James River Regional Flow Management Plan. During periods of voluntary water consee Water > 2
Goochland’s Victory Christian Church is good to grow. County Supervisors unanimously approved the Maidens Road Church’s proposed development plan on Oct. 3, clearing the way for the church’s long-range expansion plans. The expansion, which will eventually take the church from 4,000 square feet to 37,000 square feet will allow the church to accommodate its growing membership, said Pastor Mike Hennigan. The plans presented to Hennigan the board, which Hennigan said will be carried out of a period of at least three decades, include a 500 seat auditorium and parking for 18 vehicles. The project will also include more space for the church’s thriving food pantry, meeting and education spaces, and expanded gardens and walking paths. Although a few residents living near the property had expressed concerns about lighting and water usage during a community meeting last July, those issues had been addressed, see Church > 3

members expressed any reservations about the expansion, District 2 representative Manuel Alvarez did comment on his impression of the church’s food pantry, a resource many in the county reportedly rely on to help keep food on their tables. “I don’t know how they do it, but they feed a lot of people in the county and this will be
very beneficial to their members, and to a lot of people in Goochland who need their help,” Alvarez said.
Virginia landowners interested in sharing their acorns/ nuts are asked to follow the following guidelines: Search yards and parking lots, but try to stay away from trees in the forest because there may be different species of trees nearby and the acorns/ nuts need to be sorted by species for proper planting. Place the acorns/nuts in a breathable sack or bag (no plastic, please). Try to keep as much trash such as sticks, leaves, and gravel out as possible. It doesn’t matter if acorns still have the caps on them or not. On the sack or bag, label the species and date of collection. Once the acorns/nuts are

In wake of tragedy, Trump was leader we needed By Roslyn Ryan Editor
To put it politely, as I may have mentioned a time or two (or 200) in these pages, I have not historically been much of a Donald Trump fan. Of course, as I’ve grown older and (hopefully) a little wiser, I’ve come to see the lack of sense in judging anyone — presidents included — by what you see and hear in what has become an increasingly fractured and tribal media landscape, rife with entertainers posing as journalists and Internet-savvy provocateurs
hunting for clicks at the expense of both integrity and accuracy. So, while I say that I haven’t been a fan of Trump to this point in time, what I mean to say is that I have been largely unimpressed — and sometimes irked to the point of hairtearing — by the antics that he has often refused to leave behind on the campaign trail (didn’t much care for them there, either, but I suppose I could grudgingly find a way to see their efficacy in that setting). I never cottoned to Trump’s constant use of the words “trust me,” don’ love the taunting of North
Korea, and, while I am certainly open to the idea that many of the same practices that make a successful business can be used effectively in making a successful government, I would not have chosen him as the businessman to run the show. So, imagine the strange sensation I and probably many others felt when we turned on the television the other day and saw Donald Trump addressing the victims of the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct 1. In the wake of that evil act, Trump offered solemn, measured words and a message of support and
unity. For once there were no sides to choose, no fights to pick, no bombastic points to drive home. In that moment, at least to me, he truly became a President. I’m not going to say that I’m abandoning all my gripes about Donald Trump, or that I am going to take back much of what I’ve said in the past. But it’s nice to know that the President many hoped was buried beneath Television Trump has finally emerged – even if just for a little while – when the country needed him most.
Disaster response offers proof of American resilience By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
After four consecutive hurricanes and a deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas, our country is ready for some disaster relief. I’m not talking emergency responses
or federal assistance, but something more simple and basic. The country could use a break from the constant stream of disaster news and pending doom, and some Americans are expressing a feeling of crisis fatigue. Thankfully, the hurricane season is winding down, and, perhaps, Mother
Nature is ready to aim her fury elsewhere, but there are no guarantees. The natural disasters reminded us that crisis is just a weather forecast away, and things we thought were constant and safe can be taken in hours. But, the real impact of the recent disasters lies in the goodwill of
Americans who were willing to step up and help when a crisis arose. The government responses to the storms were almost immediate, and first responders provided safety and security to thousands in peril during the see Resilience > 10

Searching for a way to end the bloodshed By Donnie Johnston Contributing Columnist
I’m not an ardent promoter of gun control, but something has to be done about these mass shootings. We may never know exactly why Stephen Paddock stood on the 32nd floor of a high-rise Las Vegas hotel and opened fire on the crowd at a music concert below, but this kind of thing has to stop. We worry about foreign terrorists, but we have plenty of nut cases right here among us. In this day and time, you don’t know who will pull out a gun and start blasting away indiscriminately. Schools, churches, nightclubs, open-air shows, college campuses: Nowhere we go is 100 percent safe from some lunatic. These wackos even drive their vehicles onto sidewalks in an effort to kill. Occasionally they leave a note or a manifesto, but most of the time we have no idea what sets these killers off, because more often than not, they take their own lives when cornered. Not that understanding the reason for one mass murder is going to help prevent another, because every killer has his own agenda. And the reasons are usually so varied and warped that we would never be able to predict which of some 300 million Americans is going off the deep end next. I have already heard several people blame the media for these shootings. The argument is that these killers want their 15 minutes of fame and newspapers and TV give it to them. Unfortunately, the media has a responsibility to cover the news, and when someone kills 59 people and injures 500 more, it is news. If see Violence > page 7

of lunatics. Fine. Who knew Paddock was a lunatic? According to reports, he had no criminal background or known mental-health issues. There was no reason — even under limited gun control measures — to prevent him from legally buying a firearm. And even if he didn’t buy his guns legally, he could have bought them illegally. When Washington, D.C., banned guns, that city was, at least in some years, the murder capital of the country. It is like heroin. Just because it is illegal, doesn’t mean users can’t get it. If there is a market, someone will provide the product. I own several guns. All except one are for hunting. None hold more than six bullets or shells. I support the constitutional right to bear arms, and a pistol or a shotgun for personal defense, I can understand. But I see no earthly reason why anyone in this country needs — or should be allowed to possess — a semi-automatic weapon. Let’s be honest here. Americans love to play with guns. They like the rat-a-tat-tat of rapid fire and using a semi-automatic weapon to knock down 100 tin cans in less than a minute. It is the excitement of playing with a firearm that leads most of us to buy guns, not the need for protection. The problem is that if you and I can buy
semi-automatic guns for play, others can buy them to kill. And we don’t know the bad guys from the good guys. Then there is this business of being able to buy a stock that converts a semiautomatic weapon into an automatic one, as authorities say happened in Las Vegas. Yes, I know Paddock could have killed with a semi-automatic gun, but he could not have killed as many. Another important fact was that Paddock bought so many guns. If there was a national gun sale database, that might have sent up a red flag. As for self-defense, if you were in the crowd and packing a pistol for protection that night, what chance would you have of shooting the shooter 400 yards away? And if the government comes for us, it will do it in tanks, so semi-automatic rifles won’t do us much good. There is no need to own semi-automatic weapons in this country. And all automatic upgrade kits should be totally banned. Yes, our forefathers gave us the right to bear arms, but they didn’t envision lunatics spraying bullets into a crowd of innocent people from a high-rise building. Enough is enough! Goochland Education Foundation and GCPS award this year’s Strategic Innovation Grants Projects being funded focus on nature, music Contributed report
Last week, Goochland county school superintendent Jeremy Raley joined members of the GCPS Executive Leadership team to surprise the recipients of the 2nd annual Goochland Education Foundation Strategic Innovation Grants. These grants total nearly $15,000, including funding from between $400 and $2,700 for 12 separate grants, representing each school in the division. Goochland Strategic Innovation Grants were awarded based on a rigorous selection process that involved a committee of school, foundation, and community representatives. “We were beyond excited about the response we
received this year to our call for faculty and staff to apply,”, said Raley. “The Goochland Education Foundation worked hard to provide us with even more resources this year to recognize the work that our innovative teachers are doing to plant the seeds for continued deeper learning in every classroom, and we cannot wait to showcase this work at our 2nd annual Strategic Innovation Grant symposium in June.” Cyndy Brown, Goochland Education Foundation Executive Director, said she was excited to see the grants in action this year. “I am thrilled with the way the teachers responded to the Goochland Education Foundation’s challenge of ‘taking risks’ in order to reach new heights in innovative educational practices. All of the proposals reflected the GEF’s vision of visionary educational experiences that will

help prepare the students for living and working in a fastchanging technological 21st century,” Brown said. The Goochland Strategic Innovation Grants will culminate in a professional development symposium in June of 2018, where winners of these grants will come together to share what they learned, collaborate on new ideas focused around deeper learning, and share how their risk-taking can be implemented in regular instructional programming.
The 2017-18 Strategic Innovation Grants In partnership with the Goochland Education Foundation, Goochland County Public Schools’ Strategic Innovation Grants program is designed to inspire and facilitate innovative, engaging instructional experiences for students. Last year, the program’s inaugural year, GCPS team members submitted eleven
grant proposals; seven were funded. This year 27 proposals came forward; 12 were awarded. The grant evaluation team was comprised of a representative stakeholder group, independent from school division employees: Richard Carchman, Chuck English, Glenda Hawk, Katrina Jones, and Kavis Winston. Cyndy Brown, Executive Director of the Goochland Education Foundation, oversaw the evaluation team’s work. The team worked collaboratively over the course of two long evenings to review and evaluate all 27 proposals. Teams whose projects were not awarded received feedback from the committee with the goal of resubmission during next year’s grant cycle. All five schools received grant funding for this year’s Strategic Innovation Grants program. The 2017-18 proposals awarded funding include: Byrd Cam - Jermelle

They helped to reopen closed schools, patch roofs, and do whatever was needed to assist the affected population. The stories of bravery and compassion we heard from Florida, Louisiana and Texas were still fresh in our minds when tragedy struck in Las Vegas. While it was more difficult to understand the reasoning that prompted such a senseless and singularly motivated attack, the reaction of everyday people assuming roles as heroes was no less impressive. Stories of Americans who displayed courage in the face of danger and death were the rule as thousands attempted to flee the attack of a mad man. Some made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save a fellow concert-goer, many of them unknown to each other until the last moments of their lives. It’s easy to not recognize the goodness and kind acts that surround us each day, and it’s unfortunate it takes natural disasters or mass shootings to reconfirm our belief in the goodness of our fellow man. Even with the timing, it’s a message that enables us to proceed with our lives fol-
lowing these disasters — the knowledge that there is someone there to lend a helping hand in our time of need. It’s also important to note these acts of compassion and charity don’t just take place when tragedy occurs. They occur daily in little known episodes of our lives and seldom are recognized or acknowledged. That makes no difference to the majority of Americans who treat their fellow citizens with respect and dignity and are always first to offer aid when it’s needed. Their motivation for selfless service is not prompted by a need for recognition or a sense of selfachievement. It’s a basic belief that decency and good will are valuable, and bending to help someone in need is noble. In the past few weeks we’ve seen the worst of circumstances confronting our nation, but we’ve also seen the best in the responses of our citizens and the sincerity of their response. And that reflects the true greatness and resilience of a country that refuses to fold in the face of adversity, and never forgets its citizens in time of disaster or crisis.

Goochland’s Curtis Fleming (16) closes in on Cumberland quarterback Darius Kyle (1) during the Bulldogs 49-7 win over the Dukes on Oct. 6. Fleming and the rest of the Bulldogs defense was relentless in their play, limiting the Cumblerand opportunities throughout the game and holding the Dukes to just one score.
Goochland flies past Cumberland in 49-7 final By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Goochland jumped out to a fast start when the Cumberland Dukes came to town to test the 6-0 Bulldogs. The quick start, a stubborn defense and a gritty performance from second line players proved too much for the
Dukes in a 49-7 Bulldog win. “I’m pleased with the way we played and moved the ball on offense almost at will,” coach Joe Fowler said after the game. “We wanted to throw the ball a little more than we did, but it seemed like every time we ran the ball, we had success. And the defense played great again.”
Jasper Carter quick stepped through a gap created by an improving offensive line and galloped 48 yards for the first Bulldog score with only seconds off the first quarter clock. After Cole Nuckols picked a Darius Kyle pass, Bulldog quarterback Devin McCray found Nuckols for an 11-yard touchdown strike.
Cumberland answered that score with a 73-yard pass completion from Kyle to Keyshawn Diming resulting in the Dukes’ only score of the evening. Still in the first period, Quincy Snead added the Bulldogs next touchdown with an 11-yard run that made the score 21-7. McCray recorded his sec-
ond touchdown pass when Jasper Carter took a short completion and rambled 27 yards for the score. McCray completed four passes for 70 yards for two touchdowns as the Bulldogs recorded their seventh win of the season. Carter got his second rushing touchdown of the night when he broke a 57-yard run
for a touchdown in the second period. “It was great having Jasper back,” Fowler said. “We wanted to play him last week, but we decided to give him another week and he really had a spark out there tonight. We’re glad to have him back. We are going see Football> 13

Roundup: Goochland takes down Nottoway 3-0 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland Bulldogs girls volleyball team played just one match over the past week, on Oct. 3 as they headed out to Nottoway for a James River District matchup. The Bulldogs didn’t mess around with the Cougars, dispatching their opponent in three sets by scores of 25-9, 25-21 and 25-19. Alexis Wiggins had 16 kills, six digs and three blocks for the Bulldogs. Maddie Goff had 11 kills and eight digs, while Trinity Wonderling had 35 assists, seven digs and three kills. Goochland improved to 15-2 and are on a 10-match winning streak. The Bulldogs haven’t lost a set since the Virginia Volleyball Showcase on Sept. 2 when they lost in two sets to Massaponax. “I’m really happy with our record and the outcomes of our previous matches,” coach Jennifer Erixon wrote in an email. “We are always building during practices and matches to be better than we are. The girls are driven to maintain a certain level of play during each match. We set goals, change up offensive plays and focus on all-around team attitude during our play.” Erixon wrote that her ideals of self-discipline and self-accountability are being heeded well by her Bulldogs, as she is consistently telling her team to do their best at all times. “We have grown a lot this season, both as a team and as individuals,” she wrote. “We have a few more weeks to go and they will only get harder and require more focus, intensity and

determination, all of which my girls are capable of. I can’t wait to see how far they go.” Goochland hosted Buckingham on Oct. 10 and will travel to Cumberland on Oct. 12. After those two matches, the Bulldogs will have four matches remaining in the season to get sharp for their playoff run. The James River District tournament begins on Oct. 28.
FOOTBALL The Benedictine Cadets football team continued their season on the road against Georgetown Prep on Oct. 7. It didn’t go as the Cadets would have liked. Jalen Hampton of Georgetown Prep rushed for three touchdowns, from two yards, 15 yards and 43 yards, to lead the Hoyas past Benedictine 28-9. Benedictine quarterback Jay Woolfolk was also picked off by Thomas Muldoon of the Hoyas and returned that interception 73 yards for a score. One of Hampton’s touchdown runs followed in the first quarter and the Cadets were quickly in a 14-0 hole. Woolfolk found Tennyson for a 66-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but the Cadets weren’t able to close the gap any further. Benedictine has lost two of its last three as the team enters its bye week. The Cadets will next play on Oct. 21 at home against Woodberry Forest at noon.
The Bulldogs took advantage of the lead to allow some reserve players to get valuable playing time during the second half. Coach Joe Fowler said it’s important to get these players game experience, and allow some young players to get experience.

Goochland’s Maddie Goff (15) puts a spike over the net against Maggie Walker Governor’s School earlier this season. Goff had 11 kills and eight digs in the Bulldogs most recent win, a 3-0 sweep of nottoway on Oct. 3.
MLB Goochland native and Goochland High School graduate Justin Verlander was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Houston Astros on Sept. 1. Since joining the Astros, Verlander has proved it was a wise move for the American League Western Division champions, as he allowed just 17 hits, four runs and struck out 43 batters in five regular season appearances with
Houston for a total of 34 innings. Two of those games, Sept. 22 and Sept. 12, both against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Verlander tossed shutouts in a combined 15 innings of work. Most recently in the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox, Verlander shined once again. He pitched Game 1 of the series
on Oct. 5, an 8-2 win for the Astros. Verlander went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and struck out three hitters. In Game 4 on Oct. 9, Verlander made a relief appearance and allowed one run on one hit, a home run, and walked two batters in two and two-third innings of work. He earned the decision for Houston in the 5-4 series clinching win over Boston.
“Those kids practice so hard every single day and they give us great looks every week, and it was great for them to get the opportunity to get on the field for an extended period of time tonight,” Fowler said. Freshman Kameron Holman took full advantage of the opportunity on
offense and defense. The freshman scored on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter and provided several key tackles on defense from his position in the Bulldog secondary. “It was first touchdown of the season and it was a great opportunity for me,” Holman said following
the game. “A lot of freshman would like to be in the same position. I’m the only freshman on the varsity,” he added. Holman said the scoring run came easier than he expected. “It was good blocking so I just had to make one move.”
