Randolph Elementary School to unveil new VOLTS Lab Nov. 13 Contributed report

Efforts to interest students in the science behind energy production will get a boost next month, when Randolph Elementary School hosts the grand opening of the VOLTS (Valuable Opportunities for Learning and Teaching Science) Lab at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13. The VOLTS lab is the result of

the generous support of a $2,500 Dominion K-12 Educational Partnership Grant that was used to purchase the equipment and materials needed to create the VOLTS lab, featuring several hands-on displays that will be used to educate students on energy production, electricity, and electrical safety. The lab will be housed in the

classroom of Sherrill Kauffman, gifted resource teacher at Randolph Elementary. Kauffman was inspired to apply for the Dominion grant after visiting Dominion’s Surry Nuclear Information Center with 3rd grade students following the post-tsunami incident in Japan at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, and after her own trip to Iceland, a coun-

Adoptions key to success for Christmas Mother

Each year, Goochland Fire & Rescue “adopts” a family in need to support the work of the Christmas Mother Program. This year is no exception, as volunteer firefighters Brandon McKinney and Hunter Glaveskas pitched in to help Christmas Mother Beth Ferguson load up items for delivery. More adopting organizations and families are needed in order to support all of those seeking help this Christmas. To request a family to adopt this year, please call the Christmas Mother Hotline at (804) 556-3411 by the second week in November. Details about adopting your family this year can be found at www.goochlandchristmasmother.org.Donations of the following items may be dropped off at the EZ Ship: dish detergent, laundry detergent, body wash or soap, household cleaning supplies, paper plates, paper napkins and paper towels. EZ Ship will be accepting items until Nov. 25. The address is 2726 Fairground Rd.

Going your own way: Can we talk about this? By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Here’s a challenge for you: As fast as you can, think of the number one way to immediately be the least popular person at any party, even less popular than the person who takes one bite of a canapé and puts it back on the tray. OK, time’s up.

If you said “talk about death and/or funerals” — or anything close to that — congratulations, you win. Truth be told, there are probably half a dozen things people like to talk about less than death, though none immediately spring to mind. And, despite the fact that all of us are almost certainly set to exit stage right at some point in the — hopefully distant — future, our own funerals are

It’s never too early By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As I walked through an overflow crowd at Homecoming last week, I couldn’t help but wonder if all those excited kids full of energy and enthusiasm were aware that choices made today could affect the rest of their lives. A changing educational environment is providing a variety of choices for students in today’s schools, and early career choices are becoming the norm rather than the exception. One school official told me last week that it’s never too early to start when planning for your child’s future. That philosophy stands in stark contrast to the way experts felt decades ago when my generation faced career choice dilemmas. The unimportance of making stressfilled decisions early in high school was the order of the day, and some students entered college with no idea where it would lead. Many students selected general studies to match their inconclusive tendencies regarding future career choices. I suppose it was a different era in a less competitive world where some waited well into their 30s to make lifelong career decisions, and others never discovered their true niche and made careers out of changing jobs and seeking new skills. Covering last week’s Hanover County Public Schools’ Educational Expo, I noted elementary students who sat patiently with their parents listening to descriptions of specialty programs still years away for them. Many of them already have Plans A, B and C mapped out, and they are well informed and prepared to take full advantage of the expanded opportunities. Career and technical opporsee Planning > page 7

tunities continue to attract students who seek stable wellpaying careers that do not require college degrees. Local school systems are not ignoring the changing environment, and continue to offer more and varied curricula choices for its students. Older special programs like IB (International Baccalaureate) and AP (Advanced Placement) continue to thrive, but the gap between the average student and the availability to access specialty programs has shrunk with the expanded opportunities. Complaints that accused some systems of catering to above average or gifted programs are no longer valid in most systems, and today’s educational choices and specialty

Talk continued from > 6 while discussing the End of Life Planning recently held by Byrd Presbyterian Church. The free workshop focused on helping anyone who would like assistance creating a living will, planning their own funeral or memorial service, or even writing their own obituary. As I listened to event co-organizer Rev. Carroll Londoner, a man as practical and cheerful about mortality as anyone you are likely to meet, it began to dawn on me what a wonderful idea this is. Admittedly, I should not have had to have this pointed out to me. When my husband’s father died unexpectedly two years ago at just 62, we suddenly found ourselves chestdeep in questions we’d never even fathomed. What kind of service to hold, what to put in the obituary, what to do with pets and possessions — there was simply no road map.

and middle school students, it’s more important for parents to educate themselves regarding important choices facing their students at early ages. As parents exited the expo last week, I heard many lament that they wish they had known about these programs earlier since many begin in ninth grade. Many seemed unaware of the varied and expanded choices for today’s students. As one educator said, “It’s not your grandfather’s school system.” No, it’s not and our schools are changing for the better with a new set of students, choices and demands, and programs are now available that allow children to pursue career goals at an early age. And, this is not one of those new fangled ideas that make

Of course, conversations about death aren’t easy to have (“Mom, this roast is delicious — by the way, have you considered which hymns you’d like at your memorial service?”) and no one should be pushed to make such plans against their will (in fact, forcing someone to plan his or her own funeral might be the best way to get written out of a will). Still, the fact remains that the best way to make sure that your final requests are fulfilled by those who remain behind is to have them written down. As Londoner pointed out, you don’t even have to tell anyone about it — plans can be drawn up and filed safely away until the day comes (again, hopefully many, many years from now) when they need to be consulted. My straight-talking uncle used to have a funny saying, one that he deployed whenever us kids were about to make some ill-advised choice he didn’t agree with: “It’s your funeral,” he would say, shrug-

ging his shoulders and smiling, “do whatever you want.” Who would have known, all these years later, how forward thinking he would turn out to be.

With its festive floats and familiar pageantry, the annual Homecoming celebration remains one of the highlights of the school year at Goochland High. This year’s celebration did not disappoint, as students cheered on their Bulldogs and paused the festivities just long enough to crown Natasha Tyrell and John King the 2017 Homecoming Queen and King.

Goochland High School’s Cole Nuckols (6) and ?? (26) stop Randolph-Henry’s Derius Marable for a loss early in the 51-8 homecoming win for the Bulldogs over the Statesmen on Oct. 20, continuing Goochland’s perfect season.

Goochland dominates Statesmen in 51-8 final By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

It was a blockbuster night for Goochland High School. On a beautiful evening for football, the stands quickly filled as the Bulldogs celebrated Homecoming and welcomed an overflow crowd for a game

against Randolph-Henry. Thousands of miles to the west, perhaps the most famous Bulldog alumnus took the mound in an American League Championship Series elimination game against the New York Yankees. Justin Verlander, a 2001 GHS graduate and recent-

ly acquired pitcher by the Houston Astros, got the ball with everything on the line and the Astros single shot for a game seven in the series. At the end of the evening both Bulldogs had entered a W in the final box score, with Verlander pitching a gem in a 7-1 win, and the Bulldogs

celebrating Homecoming with a 51-8 thumping of the Statesmen. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and surprised the Randolph-Henry defense with three straight passes, the longest a connection to Dallas Holmes that set them up deep in Statesmen territory. Jasper

Carter covered the final 22 yards and the Bulldogs took a quick 6-0 lead. Following a Statesmen three and out, the Bulldogs wasted no time finding the end zone. John King covered the final 17 yards and a two-point conversion made the score 14-0 with only minutes gone

off the clock. Khalil Holman recovered a fumble on the next Statesmen possession and set up the Bulldogs deep in RandolphHenry territory. Perry SneadJohnson got his first score of the evening on a three-yard see Football> 12

Bulldogs honor four seniors, girls win XC race By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was a day of celebration for the Goochland cross country teams on Oct. 18 at Goochland High School. Prior to both races, the teams honored the senior members of the boys and girls cross country teams. On the girls side, Jill Pillow was the lone senior members of the Bulldogs girls cross country team and in her final home race at Goochland set a new season best time of 25:48. “It was my season PR, so it was a pretty good race,” she said. Pillow has been a member of the Goochland cross country team since she was a sixth grader and said that she always looked up to the seniors on the team. Now the roles have reversed and she is the elder statesman on a very young Bulldogs squad. “I don’t feel like people look up to me,” she said. “It’s really a family atmosphere on the team. I’m going to be really sad to leave. There are a lot of freshman on the team this season. I didn’t even know half of the team when I started this season. We’ve gotten to know each other so well and with all the blood, sweat and tears that we go through, we’ve gotten really close.” Pillow said that this season has been her most successful season in her career at Goochland. As for her post-Goochland plans, Pillow said that she hopes to attend William and Mary with plans to study either education or sports medicine.

Football continued from >11 score. While the offense was taking full advantage of a leaky Statesmen defense, the Bulldog defenders were celebrating their own homecoming, holding the visitors to just six first downs, the first one coming on a fake punt.

Pillow finished in 12th place overall with her season best time. Overall, the Bulldogs dominated the race, taking down Buckingham 17-61 and Amelia 17-92. Nottoway also had runners compete, but not enough to register a team score. Zella Warner won the race with a time of 20:38, followed by teammates Anna Kate Wirsing in second at a 21:16, Grace Juran with a 21:51 and Marissa Shroder with a 23:27 to sweep the top four spots. Maddie Muniz was seventh for the Bulldogs with a 24:37 and Aishlin Hyman was eighth with a 25:11. Gina Marcialis finished just ahead of Pillow with a 25:44 and Caroline Black was 15th with a 26:32. On the boys side, senior Austin Bruce celebrated the day in the best way possible, winning the boys race with a time of 17:35. Bruce is in his fourth season of competing for the Bulldogs and said that he loves the atmosphere of the team. “These guys this year are special, I just know it,” he said. “We can make it pretty far, definitely further than we’ve made it in other years.” He said that the past two weeks in particular, the Bulldogs have been coming together as a unit. “We’ve really stepped up,” he said. “We’ve really come together and ran as a team. We’ve had some fits and yelling at each other, but we’re doing really well now.” When it comes to his memories of his four seasons, Bruce said that the people are what will stick out to him

the most. “I’m going to remember the guys from my freshman year that really helped me out,” he said. “I’m going to remember my coaches, my teachers who have supported me through all this. It’s a long list.” Kade Adamy is another senior on the team and he finished 13th overall with a 20:41 in the Oct. 18 meet against Amelia, Nottoway and Buckingham. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said of being a senior on the team. “There’s a lot of pressure on you, it’s your last

year. You really try to do your best because you want to leave something behind.” Adamy said that he began running cross country his sophomore year after one of his friends suggested he try out for the team. “I love it,” he said. “I just love it so much. I’m now top five for the team and that’s amazing.” Adamy’s post-Goochland plans are uncertain as of now, but he hopes to attend Christopher Newport University and walk-on to their cross country team.

Payton Harrigal is the third senior member of the boys team and he finished 32nd with a time of 23:03. Harrigal has been on the team for two seasons and was brought to the team by his friends and as an additional way to keep in shape. “Running has meant a lot to these people,” he said. “It’s a little new to me, but they get you going.” Harrigal said that he is going to try his hand at swimming for his postGoochland plans. The Bulldogs finished second behind Buckingham with 47 points.

“We have some great players on our defense and they just keep getting better every week,” coach Joe Fowler said after the game. “Coach Summitt does a great job of getting them in the right places and then letting them run to the ball.” The Statesmen avoided a shutout with a late game touchdown and two point conversion, making the final score 51-8.

With two games remaining, the Bulldogs are primed for another playoff run if things go the way Fowler and the team hope. “Right now we are sitting at second place for the eight spots in the Region A playoffs,” Fowler said. “All we can do is take care of business and win our games. Hopefully we can jump into the first spot but some of it is out of our control.”

The Bulldogs are on the road next week at Prince Edward, a hard team to figure. “Prince Edward is explosive on offense but the past few weeks they’ve struggled to stop running teams. Hopefully we can continue that trend and move the ball on them,” Fowler said. “Defensively we feel like we can match up with them but it will be a challenge to prepare for them,” Fowler

said. In Houston, Verlander’s teammates won game seven and Verlander was named MVP of the American League Championship Series. The Astros are now headed to the World Series to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fowler and the Bulldogs are hoping for similar post season results.

Carson Riley as Jason and Riley Krogsund as Freddie looked for treats at the Goochland Elementary School Trunk or Treat.

Alora Hewitt rocked it out as Toy Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddies. Hewitt was one of dozens of children who came to the event dressed as their favorite television or movie character.

Kids at this year’s Trunk or Treat event once again enjoyed all the treats without the tricks.
