The Goochland Historical Society has announced the gift of a large photo collection of prominent mid-20th century local photographer Jane Quinn Saunders, who passed away in 2005. The gift was made by her sister, Ann Lee Saunders Brown. “We are thrilled to add the wonderful Photograph Collection of Jane Saunders to our archives,” said GHS president Scott Johnson. “The collection is large, and will become a treasured archive in interpreting and celebrating Goochland’s great history. We can’t wait to reveal and celebrate Ms. Saunders’ images with our community.” Born in 1916, Jane Quinn Saunders moved from her home in the Ginter Park section of Richmond to Tuckahoe Point Farm in eastern Goochland in the mid-1930s, remaining there until her death in 2005. She is fondly remembered for her involvement with the Goochland Garden Club, where she served as president from 1984-1986. A Goochland Garden Club tribute to Jane’s life cites

Upon her passing, Jane left her large photograph collection with her sister, Ann Lee Saunders Brown. Mrs. Brown donated this collection, on behalf of her sister, to the
Goochland County Historical Society. The collection is estimated to include over 5,000 images. A large number of images involve Virginia wild flowers, inspired by her involvement with the Garden Club of Virginia. Other significant topics of her collection include farm life, historic homes of Goochland and a mid-1950’s archive of the first major film screening conducted at Tuckahoe Plantation.

School division to host event focused on industrial and technical education Division also seeking help to fine-tune its CTE program Contributed report
Goochland County Public Schools has been chosen to host the District II SkillsUSA events, a student-run organization that meets the needs of industrial and technical careers. According to teacher Tim Greenway, “Skills USA sets a standard for what employers look for when hiring careerminded individuals.”
Recently, two Goochland High School students, Taylor Guy and Derek Powers, were elected as regional SKILLs officers in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program. Both of these officers will represent District II at all district, as well as some state events. The Career and Technical Education program of Goochland County Public Schools is also holding a survey for students and parents. The survey will determine any needed course changes, additions, and/or deletions as GCPS CTE programming con-
tinues to evolve. “We want to know what students are interested in so we can offer the necessary courses to help them follow their passion,” says Bruce Watson, Director of Career and Technical Education. The data acquired from the survey will help the program determine the best course offerings to help the students of Goochland County Public Schools be career ready for life after high school graduation. For those who may be interested in participating in the survey, it may be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/GCPS2017.

Goochland Pet Lovers’ Oyster Roast brings in $50K for animal shelter Funds raised during Oct. 20 event bring group’s total to $1.175 million Contributed report
The Goochland Pet Lovers organization hosted their first annual Oyster Roast and Silent Auction at the Deep Run Hunt Club on Friday, Oct. 20, joining fellow local animal lovers for an evening of delicious food and merriment. Wayne Dementi, president of Goochland Pet Lovers, proudly announced that the sold-out event raised $50,000 for the new state-of-the-art animal shelter currently being built in Goochland, boosting the organization’s Promise
Campaign total to $1.175 million. These funds will be given to the county to cover the cost of the project’s construction. According to Dementi, more than 300 people enjoyed oysters, chicken and chili provided by Gregg Gregory while listening to the music of the Susan DePhillip Band. Over 100 silent auction items were sold and an added feature was a “Wine Pull,” which was sponsored by Kevin Brandt and Randy Hagan. The silent auction and donation appeal garnered over $29,000. Sponsorships and other donations also added significantly to the evening’s success. The highlight of the event came at 8 p.m., when Chair Tom Winfree announced that Paul and Vicki Saunders had generously committed to donating $200,000 toward
the Goochland Pet Lovers Promise Campaign. With this gift, the new building has been enhanced and will stand very prominently, welcoming all to the Greater Goochland Courthouse area. “This is truly a testament to the people of Goochland and their commitment to the care and treatment of animals in our area,” said Dementi. “Kudos to all those Board members and volunteers of Goochland Pet Lovers for their hard work and dedication in delivering not only a successful and fun event at Deep Run Hunt , but also for their role Photo by Wayne Dementi in the tremendous success in Randy Hagan and Janet Dalton were two of many revelers who took part in last month’s very raising such significant funds successful Goochland Pet Lovers’ Oyster Roast fundraiser. for this public-private project with the County.” Paid Political Advertisement Paid PoliticalAdvertisement For more information about the Goochland Pet Lovers and their mission, visit www.goochlandpetlovers.com.

Local children got the chance to show off their Halloween looks a little early last Saturday, as Goochland hosted its annual Fall Festival at the county’s Sports Complex. The always popular event featured contests, food, games and, of course, plenty of costumed kiddos.

Could a boat ride be the best cure for our divided nation? OK, so I will be the first to admit that I may not have gotten this done as quickly as I would have liked. Yes, it took me a while — too long, in fact, and for that I am sincerely sorry. Thankfully, however, after much consideration, plenty of late-night pondering and a not insignificant
amount of painstaking research, I think I may have finally found a way to bring an end to the divisive, discordant funk that has enveloped our country as of late. America, listen up: We’re going on a cruise. Now, please understand, this is not a plan I came up with on a whim. In fact, it was only after my wonderful, loving, exceedingly generous parents recently persuaded

Like most Americans, I was unacquainted with the name Welles Crowther when I first heard it last week. While flipping through the channels, I stopped on a Boston College football game and noticed that almost everyone in the stands was wearing a red bandana. I stayed on the channel hoping the announcers would mention the obvious unified fashion statement and quickly learned those red handkerchiefs symbolized much more than just a garment. I learned a story that I’m sure I cannot relay as well as Tom Rinaldi does in his book, “The Red Bandana,” or the subtle dignity that ESPN accomplished with their short peace on the 24-year-old former Boston College lacrosse player. But, it’s a story worth retelling, and, hopefully, a story worth hearing and remembering. It’s hard to locate anyone of age who doesn’t remember where they were on September 11, 2001. Welles Crowther found himself on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The 24-year-old equities trader was unaware that the next minutes of his life would be his last; and also unaware of the legacy he would leave. As a Boston College lacrosse player, Crowther was known for wearing a bright red bandana, an accessory he began wearing as a 6-year old when his father presented him with what become his landmark identifier. Crowther joined the Nyack, New York, Fire Department as a volunteer at age 16, and later see Bandana > page 8

“Since Welles Crowther’s death, red bandanas have shown up across the globe, have been worn by Olympic athletes, and each year, worn by thousands as they compete in the Red Bandana 5K.” After graduation in 1999, Crowther took a job in New York and was at his desk when the second plane slammed into the South Tower, stranding a group of desperate survivors, many badly injured.
Crowther appeared to lead them to the stairs and eventual safety on the 40th floor where working elevators completed their evacuation. When Crowther handed off the group to firefighters on the 60th floor, he turned and headed back up the stairs. He returned and assisted others who were injured or stranded, directing them to the only working staircase in the building. That’s what he was doing when the tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. Crowther’s body was recovered days after the attack lying beside uniformed firefighters, but his parents knew nothing of his heroic last moments. As his mother read a newspaper story recounting the stories of survivors as they told of a man who appeared from nowhere and saved their lives … and wearing a red bandana. His mother immediately knew it was her son. She confirmed what her heart told her was true by con-

Since his death, red bandanas have shown up across the globe, have been worn by Olympic athletes, and each year, worn by thousands as they compete in the Red Bandana 5K. Add to that the more than 50,000 who wore or waved handkerchiefs at that football game last week, and the legacy of Welles Crowther and the dozen individuals he saved in that burning tower lives on. At the end of the ESPN piece, the narrator asks, “What would you do in the last hour of your life?” Who knows the answer to that question, but I have a hunch that Welles Crowther had a good idea as he picked up a fire helmet and began doing something he’d done all of his life — helping others. I’ll never look at a red bandana quite the same.

Goochland High School’s Jaspoer Carter (27) eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season on Oct. 27 against Prince Edward in the 56-8 final. He also scored four touchdowns for the Bulldogs and has been a force to be reckoned with on the ground.

By all indications, the Goochland Bulldogs were in playoff tune-up mode as they traveled to Prince Edward to take on the Eagles in their final away game of the regular season.
Prince Edward found out early that the Bulldogs are hitting its post season stride as the visitors thumped the Eagles 56-8. “We got off to a fast start with a quick drive on offense and then Cole Nuckols had a pick six. We weren’t three minutes into the game and we
already had a two touchdown lead,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. “Defensively the kids did a great job of limiting the big plays that Prince Edward had been producing all season,” the coach added. Jasper Carter scored four touchdowns, and Nuckols
picked a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 28-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the second period. Eagles quarterback Zion Lewis suffered two interceptions while trying to hit his wideouts but coming on short on the throws. Nuckols’ score
was followed by a pick by sophomore Kendrick Braxton that set up the Bulldogs on the Eagles 5-yard line. By halftime, the contest was decided, and Jasper Carter had amassed more than 1,000 yards for the season. “Jasper has been our workhorse all season and he did a
great job of establishing a physical run game. Prince Edward was focused on defending the edges and gave us some stuff inside,” Fowler said following the win. The coach noted Carter’s see Football> 12

Roundup: Goochland wins district, honors seniors By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
This season, keeping track of the final scores of the Goochland volleyball team’s regular season and district playoff games has been fairly easily. Each match has been a sweep. The Bulldogs have no dropped a single set in regular season play and continued that trend as they won back-to-back games on Oct. 28 to defeat Nottoway and win the James River District championship. Goochland took down Nottoway 25-17, 25-10, 25-21 in the final after breezing past Buckingham 25-6, 25-9, 25-7 in the district semifinal. Alexis Wiggins had 20 kills and six digs in the win over the Cougars. Maddie Goff had 13 digs and five kills, while Marge Black had eight digs and four aces. Coach Jennifer Erixon wrote in an email that keeping a clean slate thus far this year and taking home the district crown are both steps toward the ultimate goal of the season for the Bulldogs. “They help us remember where we have different goals set along the way,” she wrote. “We focus on one match at a time, so that we don’t lose sight of how to get where we want to be.” That place the Bulldogs would like to be is playing for another state crown at the Siegel Center in two weeks. Before then, Goochland will enter

the Group 2, Region A playoffs as the number one overall seed and have home court advantage throughout the region tournament. The Bulldogs will enjoy a firstround bye in the tournament prior and will face the winner of the Bruton-Maggie Walker opening round game on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at Goochland. Nandua, Arcadia, Poquoson and King William are the possible teams that the Bulldogs could face should they advance to the semifinals, which will be played on Nov. 6. Nottoway, Greensville, RandolphHenry, Amelia, Bluestone, Prince Edward and Brunswick are the teams in the other side of the bracket. Along with winning the district crown, several Bulldogs were honored on the All-James River District team. Wiggins, Goff, Trinity Wonderling and Kealie Lachniet were named firstteam, while Faith Gerdes was a second team selection. Wiggins was named district Player of the Year and Erixon was named Coach of the Year. Wiggins, Goff, Lachniet, Gerdes, Finley Miers, Emma Holcombe and Julia Parrish were all honored at the home game on Oct. 24 as the seniors on the team. In addition to flowers, the Bulldogs gifted each player a Build-A-Bear that reflected their personalities. “This group of seniors is an incredible group of young women,” Erixon wrote. “Not only as athletes, of reserves, all gaining valuable experience for the coming weeks. “The best part about the past three weeks has been the opportunity for our younger kids to get extended playing time. Those guys work hard in practice and they have done a great job on Friday nights as well,” he said. Goochland’s cross country teams competed in the district meet on Oct. 25 and had a very successful meet. The Bulldogs girls cross country team won the James River District title, scoring 18 points. Buckingham was a distant second with 54. Freshman Zella Warner was named female Runner of the Year. Girls coach Andy Meiller was named Coach of the Year. On the boys side, the Bulldogs finished second to Cumberland 42-61 in the district meet. Goochland’s Austin Bruce was the male Runner of the Year. The teams competed in the
Goochland native Justin Verlander pitched Game 2 of the World Series for the Houston Astros on Oct. 25. Verlander went six innings and allowed three runs on two hits and struck out five batters. The Astros won the game in extra innings 7-6 over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Verlander started the potentially decisive Game 6 on Oct. 31 in Los Angeles, which occurred after the print time of this edition.
has displayed a willingness to throw the ball around. “Amelia is an explosive offensive team. They have one of the top passing games in the metro area and they can score on any given play,” Fowler said. The bulldog secondary will be challenged. “Our defensive backs will be tested more than any other week. But our defensive line has been doing a great job of disrupting the timing of
quarter backs all year.” Wrapping up on another successful season, Fowler knows the real work lies ahead for the Bulldogs. “The regional playoffs are going to be tough, especially in the second and third round. But our kids work very hard and expect to be successful. We feel like we can compete with anyone out there,” the coach said. Fowler also feels comfortable with his team’s progression throughout the
season, and is convinced his kids will answer the final game and post season bell. “We have a great mix of young kids and veterans,” Fowler said. “The young guys have stepped up to every challenge that we have put in front of them and the older guys have provided great leadership all season long.” Game time at Goochland is 7 p.m.
but they are also just amazing people. They know what it takes to be successful and they aren’t afraid of failure or trying something new. They’ve got their minds set on goals to achieve and I wholeheartedly agree that they can get there. Each and every single one of them has a bright future and I’m so thankful that they were a part of this program over the past years. They’ve helped make this program successful and they are amazing role models for my underclassmen. They will all be missed, but we have some work to do before the season ends.”

INSTRUCTIONS: Coat the sweet potatoes, carrot and onion wedges with all but 2 tablespoons of the oil, sprinkle with the salt. Place on a baking sheet. Bake in a 375-degree oven for 30-40 minutes until soft. Cut off any black, but dark brown is fine. Meanwhile, in a heavy bottom sauce pan or dutch oven, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil.
Add the garlic, ginger and all of the spices, sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring. Add the tomato paste, peanut butter, the roasted vegetables, salt, cayenne pepper, and stock. Mix well. Remove from heat, put mixture into the bowl of a blender or food processer, in batches, blend until smooth. Pour mixture back into saucepan, heat over medium-low heat until heated through. Ladle into bowls, garnish with a dollop of sour cream (optional), chopped peanuts and cilantro. Serves 6-8.

Winners of these grants—which will fund endeavors ranging from building garden beds to researching local history--will share what they learn during a two-day professional
development symposium at the end of the school year. Also this year, on the first day of the 2017-2018 school year, GEF provided every student in the entire school district with special glasses so that they could watch the historic solar eclipse. To Brown, it was just one more way the group could help enhance to the incredible work already being done by the administration and staff at each of the county’s schools.
“These kids are going to leave a legacy that didn’t exist before,” Brown said. “We want to offer programs that give every child the same access and equalize the playing field, and we want to help shape good people that will help keep Goochland as wonderful as it is today.” Joe Lacy, owner of Lacy’s Home Center and a third generation Goochland resident, attended last Friday’s event with his wife, Paula. He’s always been a supporter of the
county’s public schools, he said, and is happy the sing the division’s praises wherever he goes. “I’d put them up against any school district anywhere,” Lacy said, and that confidence extends to the county’s residents as well. “Every time our county has needed a project done, people in this community have stepped forward and got it done—it’s always been that way,” Lacy said. “We have an amazing group of citizens, and they make me so proud.”
