Planners split on 520-home development Tie vote leaves BOS as last hurdle for project that would be county’s largest subdivision yet By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Taking on what both several speakers described as a landmark case for the county, the Goochland County Planning Commission on Nov. 2 weighed whether or not to recommend approval of a new 520- home, age-restricted development in West Creek, which if approved by the Board of Supervisors would be the largest development in the county. The project, brought forward by the Glen Allen-based HHH Land, would feature a mix of both single family dwellings and townhomes on 207 acres in the West Creek business development. To begin construction, the developer would require the land be rezoned from industrial to residential land use classification. According to the proposal presented to the Commission, the neighborhood would need to have at least 80 percent of its units occupied by those 55 and over, and no one under the age of 19 could reside in the development. In the end, after over an hour of listening to concerns from those who were in favor of the project and those who strongly opposed it, the commissioners found themsee Development> 12

While it does take some doing to pull the whole thing together, Donovan confirmed the event itself typically goes off without a hitch thanks to the hard work of dedicated teachers and students. “Honestly the farmers market runs very smoothly without many challenges,” Donovan said. “The most important thing is for the students to understand what the money is going towards and how our small farmer’s market can help in a big way. I hope that the students who participate feel that they are making a difference and that they are proud of themselves.”

their decisions. “They have jammed as many houses as they can on this piece of land, and I understand why they do it,” said Goochland resident Joe Lacey. “But I’m just not sure this fits with what Goochland is all about.” Although residential development was not originally part of the design for West Creek, representatives for the developer explained that current marketplace conditions have driven them to rethink their approach to developing the property. Several issues remained unresolved as of the Nov. 2 meeting, including several items county planning officials said had not been adequately addressed in the applicants’ plan. To Shelhorse, the decision to support or reject the plan hinged on the role of the Planning Commission itself.
“There are concerns,” said Shelhorse, “but our role is to look at land use and land planning, and to decide if this is the right use.” Ultimately, the group could not come to a consensus on how to proceed and was forced to consult their bylaws for options on handling the tie vote. It was eventually decided that, rather than carry the matter over another month, the group would pass the decision on to the Supervisors with the understanding that District 1’s John Myers and District 4’s John Shelhorse were in favor of recommending approval of the project while District 3’s Derek Murray and District 2’s Matt Brewer were opposed to it. The next Goochland Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Dec. 5, beginning at 3 p.m. in the County Administration Building.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
November 9, 2017
A day to honor the bravest among us By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As we approach Veterans Day this year, we do so in the midst of a national debate about what it means to respect the legacy of those who have so valiantly served this nation. Certainly, reasonable people can agree to disagree when it comes to most things. But the vast majority of us know in our hearts that there are few more honorable things someone can do than to serve their country in uniform. Having interviewed men and women from every branch of the Armed Services, I have been privileged to hear stories shared by those who served in conflicts from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. I have a box in my office filled
with audio tapes of interviews with veterans, each tape featuring the voice of a true hero — though not a single one would have labeled himself or herself that way. In fact, of all the veterans I have known throughout my life, many have seemed content to keep their service to themselves. The stories of their sacrifices often must be teased out and pieced together, with details gathered before the inevitable wave of the hand and change of subject. “That was a long time ago,” a Vietnam veteran I knew used to say when remembering became a little too painful. “You don’t want to hear about that.” According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are around 22 million military veterans living among us. So what can we do
to honor those who have given so much, those who have faced challenges many of us cannot fathom? The first thing that comes to mind is simply to listen. Some veterans prefer not to talk about their experiences, but some do want to share. I will never again get the opportunity to hear my mother’s father talk about his time serving aboard an LST in the Pacific during WWII, and I wish more than anything that I would have paid more attention when he did. Secondly, remember that respect is earned — and they have earned it. A man or woman who has served this country has made the choice to say that you and your way of life are worth fighting for. Honor them by respecting their sacrifice and the symbols that represent it. It
is absolutely your right to sit for the National Anthem. But it’s my right to think you’re a toad for doing it. Finally, show gratitude in whatever way you can. Volunteer for a veterans’ organization, buy someone a meal, or simply thank a veteran for all they have done. Even the smallest gesture will likely be appreciated, and will be one more step toward a world in which all of our servicemen and servicewomen know that they are appreciated for what they have done. Yes, we can spend the rest of our lives debating who’s right and who’s wrong when it comes to the actions of our sports stars. But, on this Veterans Day, let’s all agree that those who have served our country are the true heroes, and worthy of all the respect and gratitude we have to offer.

n a time when we adulate athletes and celebrities as heroes, so few of us know real, true heroes. I am blessed enough to know a real-life hero. My brother, Timothy Sampson, is a four-time combat veteran having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan on the front lines during every tour as a medic. During his time in combat, he witnessed first-hand the travesties of war on both sides. He worked hard to save lives and stayed by the sides of countless soldiers as they gave their lives for our country and the values we hold dear. For almost 15 years, my brother served his nation with pride and honor. He may not swing a bat for a living, or star in an acclaimed movie or play concerts in a sold out stadium; however, he — and all his fellow veterans past and present that served and fought to secure the rights we all so liberally enjoy — is a hero in every sense of the word. In my opinion, they are the real heroes that deserve see Tribute > page 7

Goochland High School graduate Justin Verlander was traded to the Houston Astros this season and struck out 38 batters, allowed nine runs and issued eight walks in his six playoff appearances.
Goochland’s Verlander wins first World Series By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland High School graduate and county native Justin Verlander has been chasing a World Series championship for a long time. The 34-year-old pitcher was traded to the Houston Astros just before trade deadline this season after spending his entire career with the Detroit Tigers, who drafted him in 2004. Verlander was brought in to bolster the Astros rotation prior to the 2017 Major League
Baseball playoffs. And, bolster it he did. Verlander pitched twice in the World Series for the Astros as Houston won its first-ever title in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. “It’s everything I could ever imagine,” he said in a postgame interview with ESPN following the Game 7 win. “I have no words, man. This is unbelievable. I’m so glad to be a part of this. On that night I said ‘yes,’ this is what I envisioned. I’m extremely lucky to be here.” His first World Series start
was on Oct. 25 in a 7-6 win for the Astros in Los Angeles. Verlander went six innings and allowed three runs on two hits, both of which were home runs, but struck out five batters and walked just two. In Game 6 on Oct. 31, Verlander went six innings once again and struck out nine Dodgers batters. He allowed two runs on three hits in the 3-1 loss to the Dodgers, the lone loss of his playoff starts this year. Verlander was lightsout in the American League
Championship Series for Houston en route to being named the ALCS Most Valuable Player. On Oct. 20, Verlander shut down the explosive New York Yankees offense, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball. He struck out eight batters, allowed five hits and walked just one. On Oct. 14 against the Yankees, Verlander pitched a complete game and struck out 13 Yankees batters. He allowed one run on five
hits and walked just one batter. Verlander’s first playoff start for the Astros was on Oct. 5 in the American League Division Series against Boston. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings with three strikeouts in the 8-2 win over the Red Sox. On Oct. 9, he allowed one run on one hit in two and two-thirds innings against the Red Sox. The World Series win came on Verlander’s third try at winning the ultimate prize in baseball.
Verlander pitched in both the 2006 and 2012 World Series with the Tigers. But, the ‘06 Series was a five-game win for the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants swept Verlander and the Tigers in 2012.. The World Series championship will join the numerous other accolades that Verlander has accumulated in his career, such the 2011 Most Valuable Player award, the 2011 Cy Young and the 2006 Rookie of the Year to name a few.

Wiggins leads Bulldogs to Class 2 state berth By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
When Goochland senior Alexis Wiggins is on her game, defenses should be on high alert as she is a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court. Amelia’s defense found that out first-hand as Wiggins scored 19 kills in addition to five blocks and five digs to lead Goochland past the Raiders 25-10, 25-13, 25-18 to secure a berth in the Class 2, Region B final as well as the Class 2 state tournament. “She’s doing really well,” coach Jennifer Erixon said of Wiggins. “She had 19 kills, that’s just awesome. Anywhere the ball gets put, she’s going to try to put the ball down. We can set her outside, middle, right side, back row, it doesn’t matter. She’s a threat anywhere she is on the court.” Goochland breezed past Amelia 25-10 in the first set, scoring seven points in a row to close out the set, punctuated by an ace by senior Faith Gerdes. Gerdes had 10 digs, three kills and three aces for Goochland. Kealie Lachniet had 17 digs.
Amelia grabbed a rare lead on the Bulldogs to begin the second set, but Goochland was able to quickly reel in the Raiders. Wiggins scored four out of seven points to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 12-6 lead, turning the tables on Amelia and setting the tone for the rest of the second set, which the Bulldogs took 25-13. Amelia kept Goochland honest in the third set, keeping pace with the Bulldogs through the first 13 combined points. It wasn’t until a six-point run from the 16-14 to 21-14 marks that Goochland really opened up a large lead on the Raiders in the third set, which went to Goochland at 25-18 to complete the sweep. Erixon said that the way Amelia played was a good test for the Bulldogs. “We needed tonight,” she said. “One thing that we’ve been talking about is that the fact that the other team will score points, we’ll make mistakes, whatever. Just move on to the next point and focus on the next thing because you can’t fix what just

Goochland’s John King (2) rumbles for 22 yards to seal the 42-28 win over Amelia on Nov. 3. The Bulldogs finished the regular season at a perfect 10-0.
Throughout Goochland’s long and storied football history, only five teams have previously recorded undefeated seasons. Last week, the 2017 Bulldogs became the sixth team to place their names on that vaunted list after completing a perfect 10-0 season with a victory over visiting Amelia, 42-28. But, there’s no doubt number 10 didn’t come as easy as the previous nine, and the Raiders tested and stretched a Bulldog team that hadn’t been truly tested in weeks, maybe for the season.
“We needed this,” coach Joe Fowler told his team after the win. “That’s a good, physical football team we played tonight.” The Raiders mounted an aerial attack in the first half that stretched the Bulldog secondary and resulted in two touchdown completions to Raiders wide recover Howard Devins. Amelia quarterback Jalen Brown was 8 for 11 in the first half and the stubborn visitors trailed by only six points at halftime. The Bulldog defense made adjustments at halftime dropping an extra man back in coverage, and Brown’s numbers moved downward. In the later stages of the third quarter,
Brown was 0-for-10 passing the ball. For Goochland, it was a classic offensive performance that relied on the run, and tested the Raider middle for big yards. Fullback Jasper Carter gained 173 yards on 26 carries, many of his biggest gains coming on the heels of crowd-carrying scrums where the senior seemed almost impossible to bring down. “I can’t move the pile by myself. They can’t push the pile to keep me up by themselves. It took the whole team to get me forward like that,” Carter said. see Football> 13

Goochland cross country teams qualify for state meet By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland cross country teams made some history at the Class 2, Region A meet on Nov. 1 at Pole Green Park. Both the Bulldogs girls and boys cross country teams qualified for the Class 2 state meet on Nov. 11 after their performances in the region meet. It is the first time the girls team has ever qualified for the state meet and the first time in program history that both teams have qualified for the state meet in the same year. “Qualifying for the state meet feels like a dream come true,” senior Jill Pillow wrote
Volleyball continued from >12 happened. They know what it takes. They’re focused on it and tonight was a good test of how ready they are.” Goochland took care of
Football continued from >12 Carter gave credit to his teammates for the determined yards after being hit. “They always block well for me in every game,” he said. “They make the holes for us running backs so we can hopefully score a touchdown on every drive.” After taking the opening kickoff and going threeand-out, the Bulldogs punted. Goochland backup quarterback Chase Smith recovered the bobbled punt and the Bulldogs had a golden opportunity early in the first period.
in an email. “This team has worked so hard, on and off the course, to get this far and it’s awesome to see that all of our hard work has paid off.” Zella Warner led the Bulldogs girls team with a sixth-place finish in the region meet, finishing in 20:45. Anna Kate Wirsing was right behind Warner with a seventh-place result in 20:54, which is a season best time according to Milestat.com. Grace Juran was eighth with a 20:55, Marissa Schroder was 19th with a 23:16, Elizabeth Owens was 20th with a 23:25, Maddie Muniz was 23rd with a 24:09 and Aishlin Hyman was 24th with a 24:14.
Schroder and Owens each recorded season best times as well. The Bulldogs finished second in the region with 58 points, behind region champ Maggie Walker which scored 22 points. On the boys side, Austin Bruce led the Bulldogs with a third-place finish with a 17:02 mark. “For me, it wasn’t about myself qualifying,” Bruce wrote in an email. “I remember last year missing the mark as a team and I was absolutely crushed. My team has worked extremely hard and this year came back even better. With the addition of our fabulous
freshman, we have really grown as a team. There’s just amazing chemistry.” Robert Franck was 15th with an 18:33, John Williams was 17th with an 18:39 and Jackson Hoffler was 31st with a 19:26. Kade Adamy was 36th after running a 19:33, Reid Dameron was 41st with a 19:48 and Geoffrey Staunton was 65th with a 21:20. According to Milestat, each time recorded by the boys team was a season-best mark. As a team, Goochland scored 101 points for third overall, clearing fourth-place Bruton by 13 points. Maggie Walker was the
champion with 26 points and Poquoson was second with 60. “This is my first time going to a state meet and we can all agree that we all worked our butts off to get here,” Adamy wrote in an email. “We are extremely excited to be going. I know I am.” Adamy will run with the Bulldogs in the state meet on Nov. 11 and then be running to Virginia Beach after the meet to attend his mother’s wedding. After learning of Goochland qualifying for the meet, Adamy’s mother changed the wedding plans to be later in the day so Adamy would be able to
compete. The Class 2 state meet will take place in The Plains, Va. Regardless of the finish for the Bulldogs at the state meet, this season has been a special one for the runners. “Jon Williams, Jackson Hoffler and Reid Dameron are just beasts,” Bruce wrote. “In the beginning, I didn’t think much of them, but when it came down to the moments in practice when we needed them, they came through as superstars in my eyes. Don’t get me started on Zella Warner and Grace Juran on the girls team. They were superhuman and a joy to watch exceed expectations.”
business in the quarterfinals of the region tournament on Nov. 4 in a dominant 25-8, 25-10, 25-5 win over Maggie Walker Governor’s School. The Bulldogs raced out to a lead of 10-0 in the first set and 9-0 in the third set, setting
the tempo and momentum of each of those sets firmly on Goochland’s side. Maggie Walker held the lead briefly in the second set, but errors by the Green Dragons allowed Goochland to erase the gap and cruise to a
second set win. Trinity Wonderling had 33 assists, 10 digs and two kills for Goochland in the win over Maggie Walker. Maddie Goff added 22 digs and eight kills, while Wiggins had 14 kills and two digs.
“They were on fire on Saturday,” Erixon said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen them play that well.” The Bulldogs faced off with Poquoson on Nov. 8 in the Region B final, which occurred past the deadline for this edition.
The Class 2 state tournament begins on Nov. 11, with the opponent and location to be determined. If Goochland wins the region championship, the Bulldogs would host the state tournament’s opening round.
Perry Snead Johnson scored from five yards out to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Ziayahn Jackson answered for the Raiders with short touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed and Amelia trailed 7-6. Snead Johnson found the end zone for his second score when quarterback Devin McCray hit him with a 13-yard scoring strike that made the score 14-6. McCray then scored on a keeper that made the score 21-6, but the Raiders wouldn’t let the Bulldogs pull away. Divens found pay dirt for the Raiders with a 40-yard pass
reception to make the score 21-14. Jasper Carter scored shortly before the half to make the score 28-14. Divens gathered in his second touchdown and shortly before the half, the Raiders were within six points at 28-22. Goochland’s defense steadied itself the second half, pressured Brown and dropped an extra man in coverage, an adjustment that stymied the Raiders’ aerial attack. “We ran a three man line so we had an extra defensive back, and we tried harder to keep the quarterback contained… so he had no where to throw it to,”
said team captain and defensive leader Ricky Mayfield. McCray added another score on a short keeper and John King rumbled for 22 yards to make the final score 42-28. Fowler was obviously pleased with his team’s performance but realizes the real work begins this week as his team prepares for the playoffs and their annual goal of practicing on Thanksgiving Day, a sign the team is heading to the final rounds of the playoffs. “To go 10-0 in the regular season is a special thing,” Fowler said after the win. “It doesn’t get old. These kids
worked so hard in the off-season to prepare for nights like this.” “You don’t win games in November. You win games in the spring and summer and they put the work in,” he added. It didn’t hurt the coach’s optimism that his Bulldogs had just completed a classic Bulldog performance with a heavy emphasis on the running game and defense. “That’s our recipe for the last 15 years,” Fowler said. “We play ugly, ugly football. We’re going to run the ball. If you stop it, you can beat us. If you don’t, we’re going to win.” Fowler said the team will
enjoy the win and the perfect season, but then it’s time to get back to work on the practice field. “Going into the playoffs, we feel good about where we are. Tonight, we’re 10-0, but Monday, we’re 0-0. So is everybody else.” Carter was also cautiously optimistic about the perfect season and what lies ahead. “It’s special,” he said. “But we have to keep it going.” As the number one seed in the region, Goochland faces Brunswick in the first round of playoffs next week at home. Game time is 7 p.m.
