County opens new Emergency Communications Center The Goochland County Board of Supervisors, along with the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, and Goochland County Fire-Rescue, formally opened the county’s new Emergency Communications Center/Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The new 8,400-squarefoot addition to the public safety complex, located behind Goochland’s Courthouse, provides much-needed space for the county’s public safety radio communication system, E-911 operations, and emergency operations. Completed in mid-2017, the addition was part of an allencompassing project replacing and upgrading the county’s Public Safety Radio system. The overall project involved the replacement of radio equipment, end-user equipment, six communication towers and the building of the new ECC/EOC.

About 10 min utes into her presentation to the county Board of Supervisors on Nov. 8, at the tail end of the g roup’s afternoon session, 2107 Goochland County Christmas Mother Beth Ferguson began to cry. She had just finished detailing to board members the many ways the c ounty had already pitched in t o help local families in need through the Chr istmas Mother program, including the donation of hundreds of pounds of canned food Ferguson items. They collect the food, Ferguson said, because man y of those they serve are going to have to make a choice about what t o buy during the holida y season, “and we don’t want them t o have to choose… to buy food.” Momentarily overcome, Ferguson’s voice see Christmas Mother > 5

Board approves Pets of the week rule change on owning chickens By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In a decidedly fo wl-friendly move, Goochland County supervisors last w eek approved an or dinance amendment that expands the areas of the county in which residents can raise chickens. The rule change, which was approved unanimously by the board during its Nov. 8 meeting, allows those living in areas zoned R1 t o have up t o six female c hickens on their pr operty, provided that the birds are kept in an enclosure located behind the home. Male chickens remain barred from these zoning classifications. While board members themsel ves had few c omments concerning the change, several residents did speak during the public comment period. Goochland resident Nancy Simpson, who currently owns seven hens and at one time had a decal on her car that r ead “Legalize Chickens,” assured the super visors that the y were doing the right thing. “There are so many benefits to owning chickens,” Simpson said, “one of which is that they provide an infinite amount of laughter with their antics, their personalities and their speech patterns. They offer a sense of being back in nature, which is what Goochland is all about.” Lest any non-chicken owners living in formerly poultryfree zones decide the birds offer a little too much nature, the new rule does include pr otections for them as w ell. In addition to a requirement specifying that any chicken enclosure remain clean and sanitary at all times, the rules maintain that enclosures must be located at least 10 feet fr om the side and rear property lines, and at least 50 feet from any dwelling.

She apolog ized to board. “This is just so emotional,” said Ferguson, a t eacher and longtime community volunteer who said she personally knows many of the r esidents who receive help fr om the Christmas Mother program. “I had no idea. It’s just one of those things that, until you are in the throes of it…” She paused again. “It just kind of gets you.” Together with her t eam of passionate volunteers, Ferguson has spent the last several months w orking to make sure that Gooc hland families in need can ha ve a joyful holiday season. The non-profit Goochland Christmas Mother program, founded in 1963, provides food, new clothing , toys, books, and other essential items to qualified local families with children; seniors age 60 and older ; and disabled adults. While the need among Goochland County residents is dire, Ferguson did ha ve plenty of good news t o share with board members last week. As she not ed, county residents of all ages ha ve stepped forward to help the pr ogram serve local families in need. In addition t o the man y individuals and g roups who have signed on t o adopt families, Goochland High School athletic director Bryan Gordon recently helped

arrange a canned food dr ive that brought in two full truckloads of nonperishable staples. Local students ha ve gotten in on the act in a big wa y as well, donated much-needed fleece and elect ric blankets and hosting a lemonade stand that raised $400 in two days. Although she has att ended dozens of events and logged hundreds of hours, Ferguson was quick to give credit for the success of this y ear’s drive to the organization’s volunteers. “I’m really just the fac e of this,” she told board members, and the organization wouldn’t be what it is w ithout the people working hard behind the scenes. As the Chr istmas holiday draws near, Ferguson and her team have several events for which they could use v olunteer help. On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Christmas Mother program is seeking shoppers t o help purchase gifts for this y ear’s qualified recipients. Shopping begins at 7 a.m. at the Walmart in Short Pump and w ill continue until early aft ernoon or until all the shopping is c omplete. Volunteers may shop for an hour or all morning. On Saturday, Dec. 2, the group needs v olunteers to wrap gifts starting at 8 a.m. at Central High School, located at 2748 Dogt own Road. The wrapping will continue until all the g ifts are wrapped (around noon) and volunteers may wrap for an hour or all morning. M ore information is available at www .goochlandchristmasmother.org.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

For Goochland residents, plenty of reasons to give thanks this season for this Thanksgiving …

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As we approach Thanksgiving once again (seriously, where did this year go?) most of our minds naturally turn toward our many blessings and the thing s for whic h we are thankful. Fortunately, if you live in Goochland, it isn’t hard to come up with a heaping helping of things to celebrate, those features of our community that — while w e certainly don’t keep them secret intentionally — the rest of the world may not have heard about yet. In light of this, this w eek I’d like to offer just a few thing s that Goochlanders have to be thankful

Letters to the Editor American Education Week is perfect time to celebrate our schools Dear Editor, This year, during the w eek of Nov. 13, schools and sc hool divisions across the c ountry will be celebrating American Education Week. The achievements of our division are grounded in our strategic plan and w ould not be possible without the contributions of our dedicat ed employees and supportive community. American Education Week marks a g reat opportunity to celebrate our sc hools, our students, and our t eam members. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor Election turnout once again put Goochland at the top of the list in Va. Dear Editor, Goochland’s turnout in last week’s election was 62.3 percent of active voters, more than 30 per cent higher than the 47.5 per cent statewide average, and c ertainly among the top jurisdictions across the Commonwealth. Although the county turned in a majority for the Republican statewide candidates, voters in Thr ee Square Precinct almost exactly matched the statewide results: giving 51.6 percent to Governor-Elect Ralph Northam, 51.2 per cent to Lt. Gov.-elect Justin Fairfax and 52.8 per cent to Attorney General Mark Herring. We are thankful that v oters throughout the c ounty were able to exercise their franchise see Election > 8

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

Company 4 Auxiliary will hold annual fundraiser on Saturday in Hadensville

Veterans continued from > 6 well used cant eens supplied by our dads, and w e regularly camped out in shelt er halves that came home in neatly st enciled trunks that follo wed our fathers back home. Every attic or basement had one.

There was a time in history when elected off cials were always veterans, and prominent f gures almost always boasted experience in uniform And my father’s worn combat boots sat on the floor in our laundry room for years after he left this earth, a subtle tribute to his time in the Army Gen. Mercer reminded the assembled group that less than one percent of Americans currently serve in the militar y. He noted a time in hist ory, the same one I r eferenced earlier, when elected officials were always veterans, and prominent figures almost al ways boasted experience in uniform. Today, it’s the e xception rather than the r ule to find a politician with military experience on their r esume. There

paintings, Christmas gifts, jewelry, crafts, Tupperware, and items from Pampered Chef, LuLaRoe, Mary Kay, Thirtyone, Norwex and Sc entsy. All are invited to come out for a day of fun and early Chr istmas shopping. The Hunter’s Lunch begins at 11 a.m., and will feature bean soup, vegetable soup,

chili and dessert. The bake sale will include homemade cak es, pies, cookies and candies. Currently, all mone y from the Auxiliary’s fundraisers goes toward repayment of a loan from the Fir e Association and Goochland County for the construction of the firehouse’s new kitchen and day rooms.

are a n umber of reasons for that phenomena, including the absence of a national dr aft, but Mercer made a pertinent observation about the effect of a nation that forgets its veterans. He noted that how we treat our veterans and r espect our military has a dir ect effect on the type of individuals who respond to the call of uniformed service. In other words, our youth is watching how we treat veterans, and our futur e heroes are reassured when veterans are cared for and honored. It’s important when w e will need the best and the brightest to enter the r anks as our nation’s challenges increase in a world with a multitude of threats. In a w orld where conflict

and controversy seem almost unavoidable and the thr eats numerous and m ulti-faceted, every citizen rests easier knowing there are citizens willing to serve and sacr ifice to protect freedoms we often take for granted. Those men who st ruggled to stand at that w ind-chilled event know that, affirmed by their own valor and patriotism. They knew that when the y answered a call t o board ships and fight an unkno wn enemy on foreign soils. And, as a nation, we need to know it; and ne ver fail t o remember, honor and car e for our veterans, but Gen. Mercer probably said it better. “Every day should be Veterans Day.”

Goochland’s volleyball team defeated Poquoson 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 on Nov. 8 to win the Class 2, Region A crown. The Bulldogs then defeated Luray in four sets to advance to the Class 2 state semifinals. .

Goochland wins region title, advances in states By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

After defeating P oquoson in straight sets t o secure the Class 2, Region A title on Nov. 8, Goochland was set to take on Luray with home court advantage in the Class 2 playoffs. As the B ulldogs took the field against, ironically, the B ulldogs from Luray, Goochland hadn’t dropped a single set all season. But, Luray took it t o Goochland in the first set and the Bulldogs found themselves in a place they haven’t been in a

regular season game in 2017— trailing on the scoreboard. But, powered by an e xplosive offense fr om Alexis Wiggins and M addie Goff, Goochland won three sets in a row to defeat L uray 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 to secure a spot in the Class 2 stat e semifinals. “I was a little ner vous after the first (set),” coach Jennifer Erixon said. “I was ner vous about how the g irls mentality would be after we dropped that set. Luckily for me, a lot of these g irls played two years ago when we dropped the first

set to Robert E. Lee. I kind of talked about that. It was good that we could reflect upon that. My girls have a lot of fight and a lot of determination and I know they can turn it on.” Goochland led through the first half of set one, but Luray went on a 5-0 r un to open up an 18-13 lead, which Luray would not yield. Luray opened up set tw o with this first point, but Goochland was able t o buckle down and get back on track. Wiggins scored a point t o give Goochland the lead at 10-8 and the B ulldogs offense

was off to the r aces after that. Following that kill by Wiggins, Goochland went on a 9-2 r un to put Luray in their r earview mirror and e ven the game up at one set a piece. In set thr ee, the dominant Goochland team that has been on display all season long entered the game and it was lights out for Luray. Wiggins scored five of the Bulldogs first six points and Luray was on its heels the entire set. “The first c ouple sets w ere a little r ough,” Wiggins said. “But, we definitely got our

momentum back dur ing the third and fourth one.” In set four, Wiggins went on another opening r omp, scoring the first fi ve Goochland points as L uray struggled to keep up w ith the attack fr om Goochland, as Goff was also stout opposite Wiggins and in the back r ow as w ell, as she consistently answered volleys from Luray. “Most of the time, we are swinging for the fenc es,” Goff said. “But, other times, Erixon really emphasized placing the ball, which is wh y you see us with tips or pushing the ball.

It’s really worked well so far.” Wiggins scored 24 kills against Luray in the state quarterfinals. Goff had 18 kills and 13 digs, while Faith Gerdes had 23 digs and three aces. Trinity Wonderling had 48 assists and se ven digs, with Kealie Lachniet adding 29 dig s and four assists. Goochland played host t o Wilson-Memorial on Nov. 14. If the B ulldogs advanced to the state final, they will play at 1 p .m. at the VCU Siegel Center against the w inner of Radford and J ames RiverBuchanan.

Bulldogs football defeats Brunswick in region opener By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

The image of Bulldog against Bulldog evokes all sor ts of canine inspired images of what most w ould envision as a dogfight. But, it didn ’t turn out that wa y when the visiting Brunswick County Bulldogs traveled to Goochland for a first round Region 2A football playoff game, and the final sc ore reflected a 42-8 one-sided v ictory for the home standing Bulldogs. Temperatures that dipped near freezing and a sogg y field made for a slow track that dictated the play. “The field definitely had an impact on our offensi ve plan,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said after the game. “We had to change our formations to be able t o go do wnhill a little mor e instead of going east and w est. But our kids picked up the changes really quick and w ere able t o adapt t o the conditions,” he added. The home standing B ulldogs took the opening kick off and moved methodically down the field, a major chunk coming on a pass c ompletion from quarterback Devin McCray to receiver Dallas Holmes. “We are making pr ogress slowly.

But there is still r oom for impr ovement. We need to get more consistent in our pass pr otection, our r outes, and the of course the pitch and catch,” Fowler said. Jasper Carter covered the final five yards for Goochland’s first score. Brunswick seemed int ent on answering that early sc ore, and c oupled a quick hitting r un game w ith short passes to move into Goochland territory at the 30-yard line. A fumble ended the drive, and the Bulldogs struggled to recover for the remainder of the first half. Their biggest play came on a fak e punt that nested the visitors a second quarter first down on a drive that also stalled. McCray found H olmes again on Goochland’s second drive, and followed it up w ith a quarterback keeper that set the B ulldogs up deep in Brunswick territory. Quincy Snead darted in untouched from the one-yard line to make the score 14-0. “(Devin) showed off his athleticism a few times this week. He brings a level of elusiveness back ther e that we haven’t had since Jordan Jefferson and sometimes that is cr ucial considering the youth of our offensive line,”

Fowler said. The number one seeded B ulldogs added another sc ore when S nead scored on a shor t dart, and sc ored again when Camer on Holman snatched a 32-y ard scoring strike from McCray that ended the first half scoring, 28-0. Carter added tw o more second half touchdowns on runs of 10 and 35 yards in the second half completing a 159-yard rushing performance. The win earns Goochland a spot in the sec ond round of Region 2A playoffs, a r ematch with Amelia, the second meeting in less than thr ee weeks. Fowler said that familiar ity with the Raiders could present some problems for his team. “We have to play Amelia again and it’s going to be a tough match-up,” the coach said. “It’s hard to beat a good team twice especially the second time in three weeks.” The coach is c ounting on good preparation and pr actice to give his team an edge the sec ond time around. “But we will be able t o watch the film from last game and mak e a few adjustments,” Fowler said. “It’s crucial that our gu ys don’t overlook Amelia

New group of CASA volunteers sworn in Judge Deborah S. Tinsley joined the newly sworn-in Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) after a recent ceremony held in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Goochland County. The advocates had just completed their 35-hour training course, which included observing in Court, and had obtained all the necessary clearances to be a CASA. Behind Judge Tinsley, from the left, are Tom DeWeerd, Mariah Leonard, Patrick O’Donnell, Marcialyn Ellis and Doug Elliott. These men and women are now prepared and ready to help the children in Goochland who may be abused or neglected and find themselves in court through no fault of their own.
