Goochland corporal honored for bravery Harrison Hankins earned award for heroic actions after 2016 vehicle crash By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As he approached the mangled vehicle, which only moments before had careened violently into a stand of trees off Hadensville-Fife road, Corporal Harrison Hankins didn’t think at first that the driver had survived. The man, as it turned out, was alive. But as acrid smoke billowed from the front of the

vehicle and the unrelenting blare of the horn, which had been jammed stuck by the impact, cut through the frigid December night, Hankins soon recognized that the situation was about to get much worse. Ambulance age remains concern for county EMS MacKay: Challenges of keeping fleet operational mount as miles add up By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland’s 2017 Christmas Mother, Beth Ferguson, is hard at work wrapping packages in preparation for the program’s Christmas deliveries. The Christmas Mother requests volunteers to come out for Shopping Day on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the Short Pump Walmart, beginning at 7 a.m. until mid-day. Volunteers can come for an hour or all morning. Wrapping Day will be held from 8 a.m. until around noon on Saturday Dec. 2. Wrapping takes place at the Central High School Complex, 2748 Dogtown Road.

Operating any local fire and rescue operation presents its share of logistical hurdles, including keeping rescue vehicles maintained and repaired. As Goochland County Fire Rescue Chief Bill MacKay told county supervisors during

the board’s Nov. 8 meeting, Goochland has not been immune to these issues, particularly when it comes to the county’s ambulance fleet. While the department does have depth, MacKay explained — referring to the four reserve ambulances that can be used in the event one of the six in regular use breaks down — the age and mileage on the current vehicles does present some concerns. MacKay told board members that the average mileage of the current ambulance fleet is 128,228, with two of the vehicles having logged over 200,000 miles. see Ambulance > 2

Goochland County Parks and Recreation was recently recognized with the Best New Facility Award (Parks, Playgrounds, Greenways and Trails) at the 63rd Annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS). Highlighting each year’s conference is a formal presentation of awards. This state-wide program honors individuals, departments and organizations throughout Virginia who have demonstrated excellence in several areas during the previous year. The Society received over 100 applications vying for awards in 14 different categories. Judged by a jury of its peers, Goochland County Parks and Recreation was selected for the Best New Facility Award (Parks, Playgrounds, Greenways and Trails) for the category Population 25,000 and Under. Goochland County Parks and Recreation was recognized for Matthews Park, the County’s newest park in western Goochland.

Ambulance continued from > 1 “Running and ambulance with over 200,000 miles on it is a challenge for anybody, and it’s not the most practical thing to be doing, MacKay said, explaining that the older the vehicles get, the more difficult it is to find parts for them.

Located at 5399 Matthews Road, the new 36-acre community park features a playground, swings, a picnic area, and a walking trail. This recognition is just the latest for Goochland Parks and Recreation. Previously they were recognized with the 2016 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in the Honorable Mention category for Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing, related to the creation of an outdoor classroom. In addition, they were recognized by the VRPS with the 2015 Best Promotional Effort – Traditional Award – Population 25,000 category for the Fall 2015 “History Edition Program Guide, 2014 Best New Program – Population under 25,000 category for Tucker’s Tots Preschool Program, 2014 Best New Renovation/ Addition – Population under 25,000 category for the Central High School Gymnasium, 2013 Best New Facility – Population under 25,000 for Leakes Mill Park, and 2013 Best New Renovation/ Addition – Population under 25,000 for the Goochland Sports Complex. While MacKay did not reveal any intention of purchasing any new ambulances, he did note that the department is examining ways to best keep all ambulances in good working order. Going forward, he said, “we are going to try and be little more aggressive in how we repair and replace [equipment].

Hankins continued from > 1 situations before. As he raced back to his patrol car to retrieve his fire extinguisher, he recalled later, he wasn’t panicking. Strangely, even in the chaos his job sometimes entails, “I find a calm in it, said Hankins, who has worked for the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office since 2015. “That helps to deal with it while it’s happening. He worked on the flames until his extinguisher ran out, but fire crews had not yet arrived. And while backup was racing to get to the scene, he also knew it was still several minutes away. The flames had now intensified, and Hankins tore through his vehicle in search

It has been a club tradition for the past four years that the group’s November meeting be dedicated to a charity fund raiser. Donations this year included two large boxes overflowing with toys. In addition, a raffle for door prizes netted a cash donation.

At the end of the luncheon, the two Marine representatives, Corporal Hobson and Lance-Corporal Coleman, were presented with a check from and the club President, Bill Brown, for an extra $200. After the event, the Marines were given the chance to drive a Classic Thunderbird. A spe-

of anything he could use to keep the flames away from the trapped, terrified man. He tried to keep him calm, to keep him still, but the blaze had begun to engulf the dashboard. Video captured that night by Hankins’ body camera showed what happened next, how with just seconds left before the fire consumed the injured man, Deputy Matt Carrier arrived on scene to help extinguish the flames. Corporal Ryan Sheridan and firefighters Chase Stigberg and Brandon Proffitt also assisted in the rescue. Even almost a year later, Haskins says he can hardly believe the way the event transpired. “They put the fire out with literally no time to spare, he says, still amazed at the way it

unfolded. “Everything had to come together perfectly. It would take rescue crews nearly an hour to extricate the severely injured man from the wreckage, though he would eventually recover. As for Hankins, the Goochland native’s actions on the night would earn him a Bronze Valor Award, presented on Nov. 8 during the 28th Annual Valor Awards ceremony at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Hankins says the other officers and rescue workers on the scene that night deserve as much credit as he does. He also insists that he didn’t do anything above and beyond what he tries to do every day: serve his community and keep people safe. “The way I see it, he says, “that’s my job.

cial thanks goes out to the hosts of the meeting, Bev and Bob Davidson and Brenda and Tom Morrison. The Virginia Classic Thunderbird Club’s 104 members represent approximately 83 classic, vintage and retro thunderbirds.

FFA students attend national convention Club members say they have found sense of family in ag-focused group By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Like most teens who deftly balance hectic schedules packed with classes and extracurricular activities, Goochland High School student Rachel Lowery knows how to keep things rolling. In her case, however, that sometimes is more than just a figure of speech. During this year’s annual Virginia State Fair, Lowery, a member of the Goochland High School Future Farmers America, competed with fellow member Rachel Payne in the log roll competition, a contest that tests a two-person team’s ability to

roll a large, heavy log along a predetermined path. It wasn’t easy, Lowery admitted, and she and Payne made up the only all-female team. Still, she said, once she got up the courage to do it, she was glad she did. Oddly, the fact that Lowery was at the State Fair at all was due to something of a twist of fate: a soonto-be nursing student, she was put in Agricultural Science teacher Danny Allen’s class this year by mistake. She decided to stay, a decision she hasn’t regretted. “There really is such a sense of family in this program, Lowery said, speaking of both the class and the Future Farmers club. “You also gain leadership skills, which are obviously good to have. Talk with other FFA members, and one will hear the same story again and again. Courtney Grady, a junior, decided to join the club because Allen was a friend of her family. Now, however,

she said she has made plenty of new connections. “There are so many kids I’ve met that I might never have had classes with, but now I feel like I can call them friends, Grady said. Like Lowery, she feels she will take a number of valuable skills with her when she eventually leaves the program. In addition to competing in this year’s State Fair, both Lowery and Grady were able to attend the National Future Farmers of America convention in Indianapolis in October. The convention, which drew over 67,000 people, is reportedly the second largest convention in the U.S. Cole Bashinski attended both the fair and the convention, and described both events as tremendously eye-opening experiences. “It was great to be able to be around all my friends, but also just to see how big FFA really is, said Bashinski, who was able to meet stu-

dents from all 50 states, and several countries at the convention. At the fair, he and fellow student Justin Hawk came in seventh in the two-man buck saw competition. Teammate Cooper Thrasher took eighth in the crosscut saw contest, and Hawk took tenth in the log throw. Other students attending the convention this year included Kaytlin Hawk, Emiley Stout, Kyle Parrish, Justin Hawk and Gus Payne. To Allen, who was a member of FFA himself when he attended Goochland High School in the early 90s and resurrected the agriculture program four years ago, the impact the convention had on his students was a wonderful thing to witness. “To see the students, when they get there, engaging with people in the [agriculture] industry, and meeting students from across the country — it’s indescribable, said Allen. “I could not be more proud of our students.

Sometimes, home is where you can make it By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Many years ago, shortly after I landed my first job as a newspaper reporter, another reporter I worked with asked if I would accompany her on an assignment. We were going, she said, to look at a house.

So off we went, armed with some hastily jotted directions and a few sketchy details. The one thing we didn’t have, in this case, was a physical address. As it turned out, that was because there wasn’t one. The story centered on a woman that a local resident had found living on his land. The property was vast and mostly wooded. She had apparently

been residing there for some time, discovered only when the temperatures dipped and the leaves dropped, exposing her self-built living quarters. It made for a neat story, no doubt about it. But what I remember most, all these years later, is what the other reporter and I found when we finally reached the site of the woman’s “house,” a sturdy — if somewhat unorthodox

— structure created from odds and ends likely scavenged from nearby construction sites. All around the little makeshift shelter were touches ostensibly added to give the place a sense of home. It had the basics, sure, including a ventilated stove, chairs, and shelves stocked see Home > 7

Dear Editor, What our schools need is real community support. I’m not simply talking about monetary contributions. The County has been generous, the School Board focused and deliberate, our administrators and teachers superior. Our children are like sponges soaking up all that is given to them. The Goochland Education Foundation provides private funds that are helping our teachers reach out in new and innovative ways, the Goochland Rotary provides breakfasts for boys and girls in our elementary schools mentoring programs. The Science Museum of Virginia has partnered with our STEM camp. This is just a sampling of those who contribute to our children’s life skills. This year, two of our elementary schools, Byrd Elementary won the overall championship, Randolph Elementary placed second in the recent competition held at Maggie Walker. They now go on to James Madison University for the State Championship . How do we, as community members, parents and tax payers measure success? We have been successful as measured by SOL scores. The schools only have the children for a small number of hours, as impactful as they can be, but it is what parents and the community are doing that captures the vast majority of the children’s time. Our mentoring programs ask for 30 minutes per week to be with children that are growing their leadership skills. No money is required, just 30 minutes per week. We need mentors, men and women. Step up. Richard Carchman Goochland

She graduated from Mary Baldwin College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and went on to become the President of Bon Air Title Agency in Richmond, where she worked with real estate attorneys and professionals throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2005, she decided to pursue a path to ordained ministry that took her through the School of Ministry Formation in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia. Rev. DiStanislao currently serves on the Executive Board of the Diocese as the Vice-Chairperson. Rev. DiStanislao and her husband, Phil, are residents of Petersburg. The DiStanislaos have two sons, Thomas and Drew. A few years ago, their family gained a daughter when Thomas married Elizabeth, and just a few months ago, their family celebrated the arrival of a grand-

son, Phillip. When discussing her passion for preaching, Rev. DiStanislao also talks of her love for working with youth, her commitment to pastoral care, and her dedication to outreach. Rev. DiStanislao’s first Sunday at Manakin will be December 3, the church’s Founder’s Day. On that Sunday, Manakin honors its more than 300-year history by basing its 10 a.m. service on the Episcopal Church’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The community is invited to join in this celebration. Manakin Episcopal Church, founded in 1700, is located in Powhatan County on Huguenot Trail, one mile west of Route 288. ing: The landowner did not want to press charges (his only concern all along, he said, was for the woman’s safety) and local law enforcement kindly stepped in to help reunite the woman with family across the country, even chipping in to buy her a bus ticket. Though we never got a chance to meet her, I still think of her to this day, particularly when considering what it means

to truly be home. Was she sad to leave the little house, despite the fact that most of us wouldn’t have considered it a suitable place to live? Or did she prefer the new life waiting for her, back on the grid, once again enjoying the comforts many of us take for granted. In the end, I guess I’ll never know. I just hope that, wherever she is today, it feels like home.

Goochland’s Jasper Carter keeps grinding out yards on what his teammates call the “freight train play” during the 40-21 win over Amelia. John King (2) is just one of his fellow Bulldogs providing those extra yards after the first hit.

Bulldogs keep rolling, take down Amelia 42-20 By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Second chances are a rare commodity in life; and on the football field. But, Amelia found itself in that position as they travelled to Goochland for a second meeting in two weeks against

the top seeded Bulldogs. On the line for the winners was a trip to this week’s Class 2, Region A Championship game, and bragging rights for the James River District rivalry; and there were no second chances for the losers. The Bulldogs recorded a second victory over Amelia

this season with a 42-20 final, and lives to fight another battle against Poquoson on Nov. 23 in the Region A final. The outcome wasn’t certain until late in the game, and the pesky visitors drew first blood with a 16-yard run by Gregory Archer that capped a 13-play opening drive.

Goochland found itself in an unfamiliar position on the short end of a 7-0 score, the Bulldogs’ first time trailing this season. The team responded with a long drive capped by a oneyard John King run that tied the score, but the Raiders again marched deep in to

Bulldog territory on their second possession. That first quarter drive was halted when Jamal Carter picked up a Raiders fumble. Goochland’s offense did the rest, providing the team’s second touchdown in less than a minute and giving the Bulldogs a lead they would

not relinquish, 14-7. The Bulldogs added a third first-half score when quarterback Devin McCray sprinted 20 yards for a touchdown, but the Raiders refused to fold their hand and scored a see Football> 11

Wilson shocks Goochland in state semifinals By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Goochland High School gym was a raucous and intense environment on Nov. 14 in the Class 2 state volleyball semifinal game between the Bulldogs and the Hornets of WilsonMemorial. It was one of the tightest games the Goochland players had participated in this season and one of its toughest tests, as would be befit a state semifinal. But, uncharacteristic errors in the third set and two powerful WilsonMemorial outside hitters spelled the end of the Bulldogs otherwise dominant season in a 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19 final. It was the first regular season loss of the season for Goochland. “I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Goochland head coach Jennifer Erixon said. “We had seen some film on (Wilson-Memorial). We knew what they had. We tried to prepare the best we could and we played the best we could. It was a great match for sure.” Each and every point through all four sets was a battle and no easy points were scored by either team. Both teams brought wild balls from far out of bounds back into the field of play to keep the volley alive several times throughout the game. In the first set, the Hornets jumped out to a 15-7 lead before the Bulldogs were able to start responding the Wilson offense and get back

Football continued from >10 late first-half touchdown on a pass play from Jalen Brown to Ziayahn Jackson to draw close at 20-14. Amelia drove deep in to Bulldogs territory early in the second half and threatened to knot the game, but McCray grabbed a tipped ball in the end zone and raced 99 yards to the Raiders one-yard line to kill

into the set. Powered by Maddie Goff and Alexis Wiggins, Goochland cut the deficit from eight points down to nothing at the 19-19 point after an error from Wilson. Another Wilson error gave the Bulldogs its first lead since 1-0 and the final eight total points were a seesaw battle between the teams. A Goff kill put Goochland ahead 21-20 with Wilson coming back to tie it at 22-22. But, three straight Hornets points gave Wilson a 1-0 lead. In set two, the teams battled point-for-point through the first 17 combined points, with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage. It wasn’t until four straight points from Goochland put the Bulldogs up 13-8 that either team seemed to have a hold on the set. The Hornets stormed back to tie the match at 16-16 after an ace, but the Bulldogs did not relent, easing ahead by a few points down the stretch, eventually taking the set 25-20 after an emphatic kill from Wiggins. “Our serve-receive wasn’t great in the first set,” Erixon said. “It was about making sure we were where we needed to be on serve-receive to get the ball to the net so my setter could run the offense. It was better in the second set and we controlled the serve a lot more in the second set.” Goochland seemed to grab the momentum away from the Hornets

entering set three, but a multitude of errors let it slip away once again toward the visiting team. Goochland’s Emma Holcombe scored a kill to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead, but errors on five consecutive points gave the lead back to the Hornets 12-7. Later in the set, a point from Wiggins, an ace from Marge Black and an error from the Hornets cut the lead to just 19-16, but a service error and then errors on four of the next five points undid any progress that had been made. In the game, Goochland committed 25 errors on the attack and six service errors. The errors were unlike the Bulldogs, who committed a total of 27 attack errors combined in the region final and the state quarterfinal wins over Poquoson and Luray, respectively. Wilson would take the set 25-20 and put Goochland in a position it had never been in during the 2017 season — down two sets in a game. “There were too many errors that third set,” Erixon said. “Just too many errors.” The Bulldogs fought hard in set four to stave off elimination, holding the lead during the early and middle portions of the set. But, the Hornets took the lead at 15-14 and despite Goochland tying the set at 18-18. The Hornets were able to keep Goochland’s advances at bay and take the set 25-19 and the game 3-1, end-

the visitor’s drive, and perhaps their prospects for a second chance victory. McCray finished the drive with a one-yard plunge and the Bulldogs were up 26-14. “I saw my opportunity and took it,” McCray said. Goochland’s Perry SneadJohnson scored next for the Bulldogs on a six-yard run to put Goochland up 34-14, but Amelia

answered with another strike to Jackson for his second touchdown of the evening. McCray found Dallas Holmes on a 70-yard scoring strike late in the game making the score 42-20, and followed up that feat with a diving interception to end a final Amelia drive. Bulldog coach Joe Fowler didn’t discount the importance of Amelia turnovers and his team’s ability to

ing Goochland’s season. Wiggins had 18 kills, eight digs and four blocks for the Bulldogs. Kealie Lachniet had 47 digs and Trinity Wonderling had 39 assists. The game also marked the end of the careers of the seniors on the team, who were members of the state championship team and accumulated a lot of wins in their four years at Goochland. “They’re one of a kind,” Erixon

said. “They know what it takes to win and you saw the fight that they have. They’re definitely going to leave a hole in this program.” Erixon noted that her team left everything on the court against the Hornets. “They left everything out there and they did everything they were supposed to do and could do,” she said. “They played a solid, all-around game.”

turn them into points. “I’ve said for years that more games are lost than won with turnovers,” he said. “They were getting ready to punch it in for a touchdown and Devin intercepts it and takes it back. That’s a backbreaker for them,” he added. And, if it’s Thanksgiving Day and the Bulldogs practicing, Fowler knows things are going well in the

playoffs. “We’re fortunate to have had the opportunity to play on Thanksgiving weekend for a few years now so we have a routine,” the coach said. “We look forward to having the opportunity to practice on Thanksgiving morning,” Fowler said.
