Couple gifts $200K to new animal shelter By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it comes to supporting the cause of animal welfare in Goochland, one local couple has stepped up in a big way. Goochland business owner Paul Saunders and his wife, Vicki, recently made a donation of $200K to Goochland Pet Lovers, the local nonprofit organization working hand in hand with the county on a state-of–the-art animal shelter to replace the county’s current facility. The Saunders’ generous gift, made through the Saunders Family Foundation, will be used in part to completely brick the front and sides of the nearly 14,000 square foot building, which will include a shelter, pet adoption center and education area. The main lobby will also be named for them. Calling it “an honor” to work with the Saunders family, Pet Lovers Promise Campaign chair Cindy Pryor said the couple’s gift will greatly enhance the new facility both inside and out. see Donation > 2

After a massive effort on the part of local school children to collect food for the Goochland Christmas Mother Program, local bus driver Maye Higgs took her school bus around to all the schools to collect the food. Volunteers helped load it, and Higgs then transported all of the donations to the Christmas Mother distribution location for packaging. For local doula, learning comes before labor By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Rollogas
This year, according to the Centers for Disease Control, around four million babies will be born in the United States. And for many of the women having those babies, no matter their
age, income or cultural background, the months leading up to their delivery date will bring a tidal wave of questions and anxieties. Goochland resident Amy Rollogas knows this all too well, and not just because she has two young children of her own. As a professional doula, or “labor coach,” as her role is sometimes described, Rollogas works with women during pregnancy and delivery to ensure that they are fully prepared for the physical and emotional journey on which
they have embarked. Basically, “a doula is kind of like a Sherpa for having a baby,” said Rollogas, describing a process in which she is there to do everything from helping to prepare a birth plan to making sure a new mother understands the physical changes that are occurring in her own body. To Rollogas, the role of doula is one she see Doula > 3

continued from > 1 To Goochland Pet Lovers chairman Tom Winfree, the donation is an example of Goochland at its best. “In making this contribution, Paul and Vicki have made it clear how much they appreciate our County and their commitment toward making it a better place within which to live, work and enjoy life here,” Winfree said. “For many years to come, it will be remembered how they helped to make a dream of many folks to come true.” Already seasoned benefactors for early childhood development initiatives and Alzheimer’s research, the Saunders chose to support Goochland Pet Lovers, Paul said, once they realized the significance of the work the organization was doing. “Obviously, the need is there,” he said, pointing out that the current, cramped facility on Hidden Rock Lane simply isn’t adequate. He and his wife are also animal lovers, he said, making the decision all the more meaningful. “Animals are so fantastic, and such a help for people in need,” Saunders said, “and that has a lot of appeal to me.”

Doula continued from > 1 feels born to do. “I’ve always been interested in birth, and labor and delivery always fascinated me,” she said. After her own children were born — each with the support of a doula — Rollogas began to pursue her dream o. Now she spends her days working with expectant mothers and their partners, many of whom come to her with what she describes as an understandable level of anxiety about the future. Bottom line, “It’s normal to feel anxious,” Rollogas insists. “Having a kid is scary, but that fear also leads you to develop skills that you are going to need for the road ahead.” Rollogas makes clear that she is not a medical professional, and her practice is to refer women to their physicians for specific medical questions and advice. What she can do however, Rollogas says, is to make sure that the expectant couples she works with are fully informed about the entire progression of
pregnancy and delivery. “We’ve kind of lost touch in or culture with what it means to have a baby,” Rollogas says. “I’m really just here to help them navigate the process.” While many people think of doulas and midwives as performing the same role, Rollogas points out that there are distinct differences. A doula, she explains, is there to coach and support women throughout pregnancy and delivery, while a midwife — who must have clinical training — serves in the role of primary care provider. Rollogas says that there can sometimes be a degree of friction between doulas and medical staff during birth, but adds that she has almost always had a positive experience. In her experience, “nurses love to have a doula present, and there is really this collaborative feel in the room,” Rollogas says. And nurses, she points out, aren’t the only ones who seem to have embraced the many ways doulas can support women during their journey to motherhood: expectant fathers

are among the practice’s most fervent evangelists. Rollogas says she has heard of many new fathers extolling the benefits of hiring a doula to their male friends whose wives are expecting. Rollogas says it makes total sense to her — especially in an age when fathers are expected to take a much more active role in pregnancy and delivery than they were even a generation ago — that men need support through the process as well. “I think men are afraid, I think they come in with a lot of fears and not a lot of information,” Rollogas says. Just as she does with her female clients, Rollogas tries hard to make sure that dadsto-be feel supported. In fact, she says, one of the most wonderful parts of her job is getting to be there during a delivery and witness the change that so often happens when men see their baby for the first time. “Just being able to watch this guy become a dad in those hours,” says Rollogas. “It’s my favorite thing.”

Field Day of the Past helping create new holiday memories Contributed report
A favorite Goochland holiday tradition will once again offer a glittering glimpse of holidays past. On Sunday, Nov. 26, Field Day of the Past lit up the skies when its holiday lights went on in anticipation of its annual holiday Open House, “A Celebration of the Season,” which is set this year for Dec. 9. Each year, Field Day of the Past volunteers deck the halls and many of the permanent structures on the grounds in glimmering holiday attire. Icicles drip from the Short Pump Garage and Short Pump Grocery, a huge star beams from the fire tower. The gold mining equipment, the sorghum building, the smoke house and other buildings twinkle and shine. Springfield Baptist Church stands in a soft glow and a lit tree hangs from one of the water towers. “A Celebration of the Season” invites local residents to join in a family fun time celebrating the holidays. Inside
the Educational Building, a huge tree awaits some helping hands to decorate it. The Field Day of the Past Post Office is open, inviting kids young and old, to put their holiday wishes to paper, and mail them off to the St. Nick, himself. In past years, if his time allows, Santa will reply to all those who take the time to write. A bonfire lights up the night, adding a sparkle to the surroundings, and youngsters are invited to partake in the S’more making which goes on as part of the celebration. In addition to the Educational Building, the Short Pump Grocery is open to visitors, as is the Short Pump Garage, Springfield Baptist Church and the log cabin. Over at the Canning Kitchen, soup is brewing on the stove and is available for sale along with the most delectable candies and cookies which epitomize the taste of the season. Inside the Educational Building, hot dogs, drinks — both hot and
cold — and chips can also be purchased. Proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit the Goochland High School Drama Club. There is also a very good chance that Santa will be putting in an appearance during the evening. Field Day of the Past’s annual “A Celebration of the Season” event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Field Day of the Past showgrounds, located at 1741 Ashland Road in Goochland. Take I-64, exit #173 (Rockville-Manakin), go approximately 1/8 of a mile and enter the grounds through the Wise Choice Convenience Center on the corner of Rts. 623 (Ashland Rd.) and 622 (Three Chopt Rd.). Admission to the event is nonperishable food items or monetary donations to the Goochland Food Bank. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Christmas Mother program a county treasure By Roslyn Ryan Editor
By the time you read this column, Goochland’s Christmas Mother and her many dedicated volunteers will have purchased the bulk of the gifts and supplies they will need to meet their goal of making the holiday special for every Goochland resident. On its face, what they do is fairly straightforward: They identify a need, and they meet it. But, upon further examination, what
they actually accomplish is so much more than that. Thanks to the Christmas Mother program, a young single mother will not have to feel the pain of knowing that her children missed out on the joyful holiday they deserved. Thanks to the volunteers who so generously donate their time, dozens of our seniors will spend the holiday enjoying a good meal, and knowing that their community values them. Thanks to the many donations
from county residents, scores of local children, who otherwise would have gone without, will have Christmas memories they can keep forever. And thanks to the volunteer opportunities provided by the Christmas Mother program, young people from across the county will be able to experience first-hand what it feels like to give back to their community. For those whose lives will be touched this year by the Christmas program, it is truly a blessing — and
those who make the program possible are the closest thing to angels you’re likely to see this side of the pearly gates. In the end, after all, making someone’s holiday is rarely about proffering the latest gadget or shiniest bauble. As our inspiring Christmas Mother and her volunteers will prove once again this year, sometimes simply recognizing someone’s humanity — and letting them know they matter — is the greatest gift of all.
Tragic day still fresh in many Americans’ memories By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Sitting in Ms. Adams’ fifth period English class was never easy. The class came at the end of a long day for kids who were just becoming accustomed to changing classes and assuming roles as bonafide students. And, on Fridays, the minutes on the clock above the blackboard seemed to move painfully slow as the anticipation of a weekend without school increased with each passing second. The small speaker below the clock crackled once before any voices could be heard, and often it cracked followed by silence and no announcement ensued. But, this time was different and our princi-
pal, B.T. Doyle, began searching for words to describe the unimaginable to his student body. “President Kennedy was shot today in Dallas,” Doyle began. He didn’t provide the details or the ultimate terror of the final result, but the announcement was like no other in my memory, and Doyle’s voice indicated a seriousness that I’d seldom heard in my short life. “Yeah, I pulled back on my trusty slingshot and let go a shot right at the president,” joked our class clown who always had an inappropriate comment for almost any situation. No one laughed, and the teacher quickly told him to shut up. The scope of the national tragedy was not evident to us as eighthgraders, but the tears in our teacher’s

eyes provided a clue that the next few days would be surreal, almost otherworldly. I stared out the windows of the class and noticed the flag at the office was flying at half-mast, a sure sign that someone important in America had passed, and it didn’t take an investigative journalist to understand that the president had been assassinated. I remember the bus ride home was subdued, and some older students wept as we headed for the numerous stops. When I returned home, my 80-year-old Great-Aunt Mollie was crying, something I’d never seen her do before. For some reason, I began to cry with her as we lamented the fate of a young president with
a young family, and the senseless nature of the crime. The days that followed seemed almost dream-like, with no semblance to normalcy as a nation grieved an almost unthinkable end to a presidency. Even the President’s opponents seemed shocked with the unbelievable set of events. We remained glued to our television sets for hours of coverage of the investigation, but more astutely focused on the pomp and ceremony that surrounds the death of a president. The Auxiliary members were joined by so many people who stepped up to bake, to donate, to come and stir, to help clean up and to do so much to help at our yearly event. The purpose is to earn money for our fire fighters and rescue personnel and get them things they might need. We appreciate the support we get from our community. Sincerely, Ann Casey Company 2 Auxilliary President
Residents will have the chance to learn disaster relief skills Dear Editor, Recently it seems we cannot go one week without hearing about some significant natural or man-made disaster effecting some community in the United States. Wildfires out west, active shooters in churches and other places of public assembly, uncontrolled fires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee are just some that come to mind. What would you do if confronted with one of these situations? The fact is that most Americans are ill prepared to deal with emergencies. Goochland County FireRescue and Emergency Services wants to help you and your family become more disaster resistant. One way of doing this is to participate in an upcoming training see Letters > page 11

Goochland’s Quincy Snead (22) tries to elude the grasp of Poquoson tackle Porter Doughty in first half action. Snead rushed eight times for 58 yards in the 21-10 loss to Poquoson in the Class 2, Region A final on Nov. 24 at Goochland High School.
Poquoson ends Goochland’s run in region finals By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
For a group of seniors who recorded back-to-back undefeated regular season records, the Region 2 championship 21-10 loss to Poquoson at Goochland High School on Nov. 24 was a bitter disap-
pointment. Keeping that disappointment in the proper perspective is the coach’s job, and Goochland coach Joe Fowler didn’t shy from the challenge following last week’s loss in the third round playoff game. “Football seems like a real important part of their life
right now, but they are going to do more important things than play football; and a lot worse things are going to happen to them than losing a football game,” the coach said. “One of these days when they are faced with more important things, maybe tonight will help them deal
with it,” Fowler said. The coach also credited his graduating class for providing some special moments in a long time line of Bulldog success. “These kids went 20-0 in the regular season,” Fowler said. “There are a special group of young men who
have given so much to this program on and off the field. They’re definitely going to be missed.” Cole Nuckols began the game with a long kickoff return that set the Bulldogs up near midfield. Quincy Snead snapped off a run of over 30 yards and the Bulldogs were
threatening early. Quarterback Devin McCray snuck the ball over and Goochland snatched an early lead over the Islanders, 7-0. Poquoson quickly answered with a precision-like see Football> 8

Roundup: Cadets sign NLIs to compete in college By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
There was a buzz in the Benedictine auditorium while five Cadets athletes sat at a table on the stage on Nov. 8. It’s a familiar sight at Benedictine to celebrate National Signing Day and the most recent one featured four baseball players and one wrestler. Of the five athletes, three will play collegiality at the Division I level, while the other two will play at Division III schools. Holden Fiedler signed with Lynchburg College, Josh Brown will head to Virginia Wesleyan, Greg Ryan signed to become a Pitt Panther, Callaway Sigler will join James Madison University and Christos Avgeros will head to Old Dominion University. Benedictine baseball coach Sean Ryan said during the ceremony that the commitment scenarios for the four baseball
Football continued from >7 drive that netted the visitors their first points of the game, 7-7. After the teams traded fumbles on ensuing possessions, Poquoson was poised to take the lead inside the Bulldog 5-yard line. But, Goochland’s defense stiffened and turned in a goal line stand that ably represented their season long tenacity. It seemed the Bulldogs had captured a glimmer of momentum after taking over on downs deep in their own territory, but the hint of hope was quickly extinguished
players varied from Ryan verbally committing to Pitt three years ago to Fiedler making his decision just a week before signing day. “It’s amazing the way baseball works,” Ryan said. “These guys have put in time and effort to get to this day.” Ryan, the Cadets shortstop, hit .418 last season, scored 25 runs and had 36 RBIs. He had four doubles, five triples, five home runs and had a .483 on-base percentage and a .785 slugging percentage. Ryan had committed become a Panther before even recording a single out at the varsity level, according to his coach. “We always saw the talent in Greg,” Ryan said during the ceremony. “He’s gotten better every day that he’s been here at Benedictine.” Benedictine’s centerfielder, Sigler, hit .383 last season, scoring 34 runs and accounted for 27 RBIs. Sigler stole 16 bases last year and hit three
home runs with a .490 onbase percentage. “He quickly became a leader on our team last year,” Ryan said during the ceremony. “Callaway is going to make an immediate impact at JMU when he gets there.” Josh Brown, the second baseman for the Cadets, will become a Marlin. He hit .288 last season and had 9 RBIs, 12 runs scored, three doubles and a .417 on-base percentage. “Last year, we looked at him and decided that not only would he be a good player for us in the future, but we also needed him to be good for us now,” Ryan said during the ceremony. “He’s done a lot of different things for us. He came into his own as an infielder. He’s one of the better second baseman around. He’s one of those guys who has done whatever we’ve asked him to do.” Holden Fiedler, a pitcher and catcher for Benedictine,
will head to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and become a Hornet. He hit .283 last season and scored eight runs and had 6 RBIs. “He became an impactful player for us as a catcher,”
Ryan said during the ceremony. “We used him on the mound and gave us some valuable innings.” The final signee is a member of the three-time state champion Cadets team on the
wrestling mat in Avgeros. Benedictine wrestling coach and athletic director Ryan Hall spoke about Avgeros prior to his signing as well, saying he’s dedicated himself on and off the mat.
when Islander defensive end Brody McDevitt stole a screen pass in the end zone, putting the visitors up 14-7. “If we had completed that there wasn’t anyone within 25 yards of him, but the kid made a great play and stepped in front of it and made a great play,” Fowler said. Bulldogs kicker Zach Gordon added a 36-yard field goal as the half ended in a close contest, 14-10. The Islanders took the third quarter kickoff and control of the game with a physical drive than ended when running back Max Barrett scampered 20 yards to provide all the cushion the visi-
tors would need at 21-10. For the first time this season, Goochland’s run game was stifled by a hard charging group of Islander linebackers led by Robert Henesey, who also scored a first quarter touchdown on offense. “He’s the heart and soul of our team, a real tough kid,” Islanders coach Elliott Duty said. “He’s the best linebacker we’ve seen all year,” Fowler added. At any given time, a group of Islanders defenders converged on running back Jasper Carter as soon as he touched the ball. “We knew we had to stop
him,” said Duty. “You can’t let him (Carter) get started or they just roll. I thought we tackled well tonight and I thought we were physical,” he added. Fowler has a decent respect for teams who run the Wing T, a formation that has provided the base for his offense for many seasons. “They ran the Wing T,” Fowler said. “As a Wing T guy, it’s a joy to watch done well. I just wish they hadn’t done it well against us.” “They played better than we did tonight. Sometimes, that’s how it goes,” Fowler said. And, at the end of every
football season, there’s always the promise of next year, and Fowler displayed that eternal optimism following the loss. “We have a good group of young kids coming back and we’re going to be a pretty good football team next year.” The Bulldogs were represented on the All-James River District team. Center Conner Duncan, offensive lineman Ethan Kopczynski, running back Jasper Carter, kicker Zack Gordon and all-purpose player John King were all first team selections on offense. Carter was named Offensive Player of the Year.
Defensive lineman Ricky Mayfield, defensive end Jamal Carter, linebackers King and Sam Brooks, defensive backs Devin McCray and Cole Nuckols and all-purpose player Perry Snead-Johnson were first team selections on defense. Offensive lineman Jacob Massey, wideout Dallas Holmes, defensive end Keiston Carter, Gordon as a punter and Nuckols as a punt returner were second-team all-district selections Goochland will graduate 16 seniors from this season’s team, including many top contributors, like King, Carter and Nuckols to name a few.

Beginning in January, residents have an opportunity to become part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This is a national curriculum that over the course of 22-hours will cover such items as light search and rescue, use of a fire extinguisher, basic first aid, teamwork, and overall emergency preparedness. In many communities,
CERT members may be called to assist others in the response to a significant disaster. They are often used to perform critical support functions which allow other responders to focus on the critical tasks that need to be performed. CERT is a program that strengthens a community’s resiliency and gives its participants important lifesaving skills. The next CERT class will begin in January and will be held at Centerville Fire-Rescue Station #3 (52 Broad Street Road, Manakin-Sabot). Class will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and will

Heading to church the following Sunday seemed almost like a respite from the gloom and doom that surrounded every aspect of American life in the days following the assassination. The routine of the service offered a brief glimmer of how our lives used to be before those few seconds in Dallas.

That small offering of some peace of mind was quickly shattered when our minister announced from the pulpit that Lee Harvey Oswald had been shot in Dallas. It wasn’t quite the world turned upside down, but there was a sense of confusion and dismay among all of us, and I personally wondered if things would ever return to the way they used to be. For many of us, that day will live in infamy, and I count myself one of the many who gauge their lives in timelines that revolve around that date.

It’s difficult to explain but life was different after those horrific events in Dallas. Not a single person from my generation does not remember where they were when the President was shot, and the impact the news had on their lives. And that’s the way it was on Nov. 22, 1963. Some of us will never forget, while, hopefully, future generations will never have to remember a time when a nation’s blood was spilled on that street in Dallas. For many of us, it was the end of innocence.
