HOLIDAYS: The perils of a ‘crafty’ Christmas. See page 6 Sheltering Arms purchases county land for hospital By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A new medical facility planned for The Notch at West Creek is one step closer to becoming a reality. Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers has purchased 25.1 acres in Goochland County for $7.91 million to build a hospital

that will be operated by Sheltering Arms and VCU Health System as a joint venture. To Goochland County Economic Development Director Matthew Ryan, locating the project in Goochland will prove beneficial to both the county and the people being treated at the new facility. “Goochland County is excited to see this transformational project taking another step

towards fruition,” Ryan said. “The Notch at West Creek provides Sheltering Arms with a setting that will have easy access from the major highways, ample parking and green space that is conducive to patient rehabilitation.” The property is within The Notch at West Creek, a 230-acre section in the West Creek see Hospital > 7

The Grinch made famous by Dr. Seuss may not enjoy a reputation for making the holidays brighter, but, for Dave and Bobbie DeHart, the grumpy green creature is a wondrous thing indeed. After searching for years to find a Grinch to add to the dazzling Christmas display the couple installs in their Rockville Road yard every year, they finally located one. The giant inflatable now enjoys a spot among the scores of other holiday decorations that span a full two and a half acres. “We both just get a lot of enjoyment out of it,” said Bobbie, a life-long lover of all things Christmas. Even when they face struggles of one kind or another, the decorations are something that help them to stay positive, she added. To Dave, the eye-popping homage to Christmas is worth all of the hard work it takes to erect it (he typically starts at least four days before he plans to turn everything on), if only because of the joy it brings to the hundreds of people who cruise by the house every year to see it. “With all the bad stuff going on right now in the world, if I can put a smile on somebody’s face, that makes it all worth it,” Dave said. To that end, he has even been known to see Lights > 3

David and Bobbie DeHart’s Christmas display takes days to install, but both say the joy it brings others is worth the work.

Lights continued from > 1 don a Santa suit and wave to passersby from the yard. This year, the couple was especially thankful for their young neighbor, Max

Moreno, who lent a much-needed helping hand as they set up their decorations. The DeHart’s annual Christmas extravaganza is lit nightly from around 5:30 p.m. to midnight, and anyone who would like to is welcome to use the horseshoe-shaped driveway in front of

the home to get a better look. The couple is asking only that visitors remain in their vehicles, as the many cords crisscrossing the yard can make walking treacherous. The DeHart’s address is 2375 Rockville Road. The display will remain up until the New Year.

The Powhatan Extension Office will be hosting a workshop entitled “Keys to Successful Organizations for all local civic, religious and business organizations. The workshop, set for 7 p.m. on Dec. 12, will cover running an effective meeting, facilitating, building a cohesive team and more. The cost to attend is $5 per person, and checks should be made pay-

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Wishing you a very merry crafts-mas By Roslyn Ryan Editor

H

ello Pinterest, it’s me, Roslyn. I know it’s been a while since we’ve spent much time together, and I want you to know that I’m sorry about that. I do regret deleting your handy app off my smart phone, too, but after “the incident” with the glue gun last Easter I thought we needed some space (obviously, the firefighters agreed). Now, however, it’s the Holiday Season, and I could really use some help. I’ve got so much stuff to buy, to wrap, and to bake, and I just don’t think I can do it on my own. I’ll be honest: Before I met you, I felt pretty confident in my ability to wrap a Christmas present reasonably well. But now I realize that I was a fool. Just searching you for the term “gift wrapping” produced such a blindingly brilliant array of perfectly turned-out presents that I began to wonder why I’d never thought to hand-paint delicate holiday scenes on my own handmade organic wrapping paper. I thought a present was “wrapped” simply because there was paper on all sides of it, never stopping to consider the relative

merits of choosing a “rustic,” “minimalist,” or “Hawaiian Luau” motif. Seriously, Pinterest, what have I even been doing all these years? Also, yes, I may have attempted once or twice over the years to bake a cookie or pie on my own, typically ending up with what I assumed were perfectly edible results. Oh, how blind I’ve been. I now understand that a cookie with less than 14 ingredients is a sad addition to any dessert buffet, worse even than a one-layer cake. And, as we all know, a pie with a name your average native English speaker can pronounce is pretty much just another way of saying “Why bother?” No, Pinterest, I realize now I was wrong to ever think I could give you up. Faced with the prospect of simply going out and purchasing a bunch of things I’m pretty sure my family members would like, I realize that it is far more prudent to stay up half the night reading your list of suggestions entitled “126 Perfect Presents for the Man in Your Life Who Has Everything, Hates Fishing, Refuses to Pick Up a New Hobby, and Doesn’t Like To Travel.” Pure magic, that one. So, now that we are

back together, I want you to know, Pinterest, that I am really looking forward to hearing your suggestions on how to festoon my mantle, host the perfect Norwegian-themed holiday cocktail party, and make the Christmas season super special for my dog. A festive alpaca sweater and handmade antlers, you say? He’ll love it! (Actually, he’ll hate it, but the photo is sure to grab a bazillion

likes.) I have to go back to work now, but I promise we will be spending much more time together as the big day approaches (only 17 shopping days left, yay!). Until we talk again, keep coming up with all of those 47-step projects and ways to turn old stuff I was going to throw away into new stuff somebody else will throw away. I’m sure my glue gun is around here somewhere.

Life lessons learned in the checkout line By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I must have an eternally annoyed look on my face by nature. As I stood third in line at a local drug store, a customer at the register pulled numerous items from her purse, obviously searching for a coupon or credit card. I took no notice of any of it until she suddenly looked up and spoke almost directly at me. “I’m sorry for taking so long. I’m so out of sorts today. I buried by husband today. An honor guard from Andrews Air Force Base came down and stood at his funeral today,” she said in a frantic tone. “They folded the flag and gave it to me.” “I’m sorry to hear that. There’s no problem. Take your time,” I replied. The lady who was second in line turned to me and rolled her eyes and pointed in disgust to the confused lady. After counting out a handful of one dollar bills and coming back for double bagging, the widow stopped just short of the exit and told us, now a group of four or five persons in line, the name of her husband, complete with phonetic spelling. “He was a hero in World War II and flew some of the first bombing missions into Germany,” she said. “Look it up. You’ll see.” Now, I’m not sure if some others in line paid attention to her words, but I’m quite convinced some others didn’t believe or care about the story. But, the name of her husband stuck in my mind, and I returned home and searched what I had heard on my computer. First of all, the gentleman had just passed days earlier and was buried that very day, just as his widow had relayed. I also learned of a life well lived, full of adventure, the love of a family and heroism. see Lessons > page 7

the West Creek Medical Center on Wilkes Ridge Parkway. The continued from > 1 facility will have about 200,000 business park, and adjacent to square feet of space with 114 hospital beds. It is expected to

open in spring 2020. With the approvals in place, the project is in the design/ build phase, getting input from patients, staff and designers,

said Stephanie Sulmer, spokeswoman for Sheltering Arms. Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Carol Hazard contributed to this report

at an Army Air Corps bomb group stationed in Britain during World War II. Just as his widow said, he was listed and recognized in the American Air Museum in Britain. After learning a small portion of this man’s life story, it struck me how life goes on around us and we perform our routines oblivious to the trials and tribulations of the people who surround us. While my day had been generally good, this poor woman in line had just buried her husband and was probably headed home to sit alone and contemplate her

future, alone. Through her devastation, she mustered strength and energy to let a small group of strangers know the story of her husband. Her loyalty and love are inspiring and offer a message of dedication and loss for all of us. I didn’t enter that store expecting to learn anything or gather any information

that could be considered useful. The lady’s words were an unexpected gift on a routine day, and the story of her renaissance man won’t be forgotten. It also reminds me that we should never be too busy to listen, or lend a thoughtful ear of compassion to those around us who may be suffering. She told me his story . . . And I told you.

Steve Bostic, Pattie Pryor, Carroll Gilbert and Daniel Allen of Goochland County were among 276 delegates who helped formulate legislative policies during the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation 2017 Annual Convention held Nov. 28-30 in Williamsburg. The delegates adopted policy positions to guide Farm Bureau’s legislative direction during the 2018 General Assembly. Issues that were addressed included funding support for

Lessons continued from > 6 I am hesitant to provide too much detail regarding the man’s biography for fear of intruding uninvited in a grieving family’s private memories, but, suffice it say, the widow’s description was accurate but lacking in many of the deceased accomplishments. The man was a talented illustrator with his work displayed at numerous state museum sites and landmarks. That career had followed a stint as a navigator on a B-17

In large part, the Goochland Bulldogs defense was able to keep the Powhatan Indians offense in check in the Indians home opener on Dec. 1. Well, minus Deven Van Natter. Van Natter exploded for 34 points as the Indians defeated the Bulldogs 62-54 for Powhatan’s first win of the season in its third game of the year. “He shot lights out,” Bulldogs coach Preston Gordon said. “He’s one heck of a player.” Van Natter scored the first nine points of the night for Powhatan and was a sign of things to come for the Indians and to dread for the Bulldogs. From the end of the first quarter through the early stages of the second, the

Indians went on a 9-0 run, which included 3-point shots from Van Natter and Joseph Santiago. The Indians went into the break with a comfortable 10-point advantage. Then, that lead got even more comfortable as Van Natter opened the second half on a personal 10-0 run, which included two shots beyond the arc. Goochland then started to heat up from the field, challenging Powhatan for the first time in the contest. While first three quarters were mostly clean of free throws, the fourth quarter was a completely different story. Fouls stacked up for both teams as the Bulldogs and Indians combined to shoot from the line 17 times in the quarter These repeated foul shots and some 3-point shots from Goochland’s Deion Harwood

whittled the Indians lead down from the 21 points it was at the start of the quarter to just seven points. Harwood had 26 points for Goochland. But, a Jaylen Hempfield four-point run for the Indians allowed Powhatan to be on cruise control the rest of the game. Gordon said that the performance of his team was not representative of how he feels the team will perform this season. “We’re a lot better than how we played tonight,” he said. “I thought we were sloppy offensively. We missed a lot of shots and we took some uncharacteristic shots from guys this early in the season. We had some sloppy turnovers.” With the Bulldogs football team recently ending their see Basketball> 9

Goochland’s Jasper Carter (27) was a force in the backfield for the Bulldogs this season. Carter was recognized for his performance as he was named Region A Offensive Player of the Year.

Even though the Goochland football season ended last week in the Region A championship game, the accolades and post-season honors continue to pour in for individual players. Senior running back Jasper Carter was named Region A Offensive Player of the Year and was joined by eight teammates selected for first team All-Region honors. “Jasper had such an

incredible senior season,” said Bulldog coach Joe Fowler last week. “Our fullbacks usually have to wait until they are seniors to be the man at that spot and Jasper definitely took full advantage of his shot.” Carter’s senior campaign was dotted with tough, physical runs at key times. He also didn’t mind outrunning his opponents and left defensive backs grabbing for air in key situations. “ He brought a physical presence to our offense and he

has developed great vision and quickness in the hole,” Fowler said. “He is rare combination of size and quickness.” He set the school record for rushing yards in a season and we have had some pretty good backs over the years. To be at the top of that list is impressive.” Senior defensive end Jamal Carter was named to the first team, and provided the steady influence that made the Bulldog defense one of the most formidable in the see Football> 9

Roundup: Goochland falls to Indians in opener By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland jumped out to a quick two-basket advantage over the visiting Powhatan Indians in the season opener for both teams on Nov. 29 at Goochland. But, the Indians went on a run that would last the rest of the quarter and represent a barrier to high for the Bulldogs to overcome in the 38-27 final. “That’s not the team that I’m looking for,” coach James Harris said of his team. “It was our first game. We have some things we have to work on.” The Indians went on a 13-0 run that ran through the early stages of the second quarter before Jalyn Burns was able to break the run up with a basket. Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with 11 points on the night. The Bulldogs were also in

Football continued from >8 region. “Jamal worked so hard in the off-season getting himself stronger in the weight room. It definitely showed on the field this fall. He was a rock for us inside,” the coach said. Bulldog fans got used to seeing Ricky Mayfield in opponent’s backfields, and his efforts landed him a spot on

foul trouble very early in the second quarter, as the Indians were in the one-and-one bonus with 5:39 left in the frame. But, Goochland was fortunate that Powhatan was unable to take advantage of the time at the foul line, going 0 for 5 from the free throw line in the quarter. Goochland opened the second half down by eight points, but made gains after Gonzalez sank a free throw and Jaylene Lopez completed a three-point play to cut the lead to five points. Later in the quarter, Powhatan gave the Bulldogs another opportunity as Indians coach Kristy Henderson earned a technical foul after arguing a call by one of the officials. Burns took the free throws, but missed the pair. Then, on the inbounds play for the Bulldogs after gaining

possession due to the foul, Goochland almost immediately turned the ball over to Powhatan. Goochland was just 6 for 16 from the line. Despite the struggles, Goochland put the pressure on the Indians in the fourth quarter. Justice Tibbs, Gonzalez and Lopez all scored in the fourth quarter to shrink the Indians lead to five points once again. But, a 3-point shot from Katie Henderson and Powhatan sinking three-offour foul shots ended the chance for the Bulldogs to come back. “We need to take care of the ball and execute our plays,” Harris said. “Free throws are something else we need to work on.” The Bulldogs bounced back in the Goochland Invitational on Dec. 1-2,

defeating Maggie Walker 43-40 and Thomas Jefferson 50-45. In the win over the Green Dragons, Tibbs scored 12 points and had five steals and four rebounds. Blake Thomas also had 12 points and recorded three steals and two rebounds. On Dec. 2, Gonzalez scored 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Vikings. Tibbs contributed 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Hicks (Goochland/UVA) was named the winner of the 2017 Bill MacAdam Tenth Man Award by the Detroit Baseball MLB Society, the Tigers announced Detroit Tigers catch John on Nov. 30.

The award goes to a Tigers player “who, while not a regular, displays versatility and dependability in a variety of fill-in roles,” according to the press release.

one sport to another. “We’re still building that team effort,” Gordon said. “Football ended on Friday. Monday and Tuesday were the days we had practice.

We had a SWAT workout on Tuesday.” “We had tryouts on Wednesday,” he said. “So, we had Wednesday and Thursday to prepare for tonight.”

In last season’s opener, the Bulldogs also allowed 34 points by one player on the opposing team and were able to right the ship. Gordon said he hopes to

do the same thing this season. “We missed some shots around the rim,” he said. “But, those will come with practice. We just have to get used to playing at the speed and

tempo and simulate the intensity at practice.” The Bulldogs faced Central Lunenburg on Dec. 5 and will travel to Nottoway on Dec. 8.

the All Region team. “Ricky has been a four year starter for us,” Fowler said. “He did a great job of setting the edge and forcing teams to alter their game plan. He brought a physicality that was crucial to our success,” the coach added. Linebacker Sam Jones completed his second season with the Bulldogs, and made an impact in every game this season. Sophomore Devin McCray

played on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs, taking snaps on offense and anchoring the defensive backfield, a role that landed high on the first team defense. Cole Nuckols was also in that defensive backfield, and played with a reckless abandon that earned him a reputation as a top notched defender. But, his real highlights came in his kickoff and punt return game, feats that earned

him a spot on the first team. “Cole is as tough as any player that we have had in the past few years,” Fowler said. Every offensive play started with Connor Duncan and his play at center earned him a spot on the All Region first team on offense as a sophomore. “By the end of the year, he was playing as well as any center we have ever had,” Fowler said. “The future is very bright

for him,” he said. Zach Gordon’s kicking and punting placed his team in advantageous positions all year long, and the senior had his best year as a Bulldog, netting him a spot on the All Region offensive unit. Finally, big games are no stranger to offensive lineman Ethan Kopczynski, and his role was vital in anchoring Goochland’s running game and providing protection for the quarterback.

His efforts landed him a return spot on the All Region team. Senior John King provided the emotional spark for this year’s team and was involved in numerous key plays on offense and defense, but was honored as a second team All Region member for his linebacking talents. Perry Snead-Johnson joined him on the second team for his duties as a utility defensive player.

WRESTLING On Dec. 2, Goochland’s wrestling team had the chance to face off against a variety of teams in early season competition. The Bulldogs defeated Southampton 54-24, but fell to L.C. Bird 48-36, to Hopewell 42-39 and to Nottoway 78-6.

’Tis the season Celebrating what has become a beloved annual tradition, revelers of all ages gathered at the County Sports Complex for the lighting of the county Christmas tree. While there, they enjoyed music, activities, and, of course, a few treats. Photos by Roslyn Ryan Clockwise, from right: The towering tree was the centerpiece of the evenings festivities; children enjoyed hopping on hay bales in addition to crafts and activities such as roasting marshmallows; Hadley Bowles enjoys a bite of a s’more shortly after the tree lighting ceremony.
