A show to go After winning acclaim as member of quartets, local GFCFS van driver offers service with a song By Roslyn Ryan Editor

JAN. 31 County Attorney Norman Sales officially says farewell, retiring after serving Goochland since 2010. The same week, new County Attorney Tara McGee steps into the role.

Here’s a question for you: What does an award-winning barbershop quartet singer do with a sudden surplus of free time once he retires from his day job as an IT professional? If that person is Bob Caldwell, he takes his talents on the road — literally. For the past three years, Caldwell has spent a part of his week working for the ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft, ferrying passengers all over the Richmond area. Both companies have attracted thousands of area Caldwell drivers to their ranks of the past several years, though Caldwell is undoubtedly unique among them for one special reason: in addition to providing a ride, he also offers a show. Dubbed “Bob the Singing Uber Driver,” Caldwell has become known around the Richmond area for singing to his customers, anything from barbershop standards to holiday songs. He always asks before he sings, he says, but has rarely had anyone refuse a serenade. Most people smile, some applaud, and some just can’t keep their excitement to themselves. “I can’t begin to guess the number of times I’ve been Snapchatted,” Caldwell laughed. He shared a story about a recent call he got to pick up a group of young concertgoers outside The

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

New year, new Trump? A nice idea By Roslyn Ryan Editor

’T

was the night before New Year’s and all through the house, not a person was stirring, not me or my spouse.

There were natural disasters, and ones wrought by man, we’d suffered through #metoo and Trump’s travel ban. We had gone to bed hoping 2018 would bring calm, or at least Kim Jong Un wouldn’t resort to the bomb.

Enacting laws on pit bull ownership will prevent tragedies

“Mr. President,” I said, “I am really quite mad, you’ve done some good things, but plenty of bad.

He offered a tax cut I couldn’t refuse, I asked about Russia, he called it “fake news.”

Dear Editor, The tragic mauling of a Goochland woman by her own pit bulls should serve as a wakeup call for the need to regulate breeding pit bulls and confining dogs outdoors 24 hours a day. Dogs who are confined to chains or pens are more likely to be neglected and to become territorial and aggressive. Pit bulls are especially vulnerable, targeted by dogfighters and others who chain, beat, and starve them to turn them into cheap alarm systems or living weapons. Pit bull overpopulation, abuse, and attacks can be addressed logically and humanely with legislation that regulates ownership of these dogs. Such ordinances have proved effective: In San Francisco, the number of pit bulls euthanized at the city’s animal control facility dropped by 24 percent just 18 months after the city passed an ordinance requiring that pit bulls be sterilized. Just one year after San Bernardino County, California, passed a breed-specific law, it experienced a nearly 10 percent decrease in dog bites. In Aurora, Colorado, officials reported that nine years after banning pit bulls, bites involving the breed were down 73 percent and euthanasia of pit bulls was down 93 percent. Legislators must act before more people and dogs get hurt.

“Now I get that you wanted to help and all that, but you’ve squashed my azaleas and maybe my cat.” He agreed he’d been boorish and the tweeting was strange, and I have to admit my mind started to change.

I decided that Trump was much worse on TV, but I can’t say we’re buddies — he’s just not for me. He said his goodbyes and he boarded his sleigh, then he touched up his hair and took off straight away. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, “Covfefe for all, and to all a good night!”

What I saw in my yard to my throat brought a lump, ’twas a huge golden sleigh being driven by Trump. “Mr. President,” I said, “how’d you get through my gate?” “I crashed it,” he said, “but I’ll soon make it great.” He said he was there to bring jobs, growth and wealth, To make better our lives, and our schools and our health. Verlander, Bernstine highlight 2017 Goochland athletics By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

T

rophies and accolades of all shapes and sizes were the center of the Goochland sports universe this season, both on campus in the county as well as for natives of the area. Goochland High School graduate and county native Justin Verlander, 34, reached the pinnacle of Major League Baseball as he won his first World Series championship of his 13-year MLB career. Verlander had been a Detroit Tiger for his entire career, but was traded to the Houston Astros in 2017. Verlander had been to the World Series twice before with Detroit, in 2006 and 2012, but fell short of the championship in both of

those trips. The World Series trophy joins Verlander’s other awards in his career, such as the 2006 Rookie of the Year, 2011 Cy Young and 2017 ALCS MVP. Back in Goochland, the Bulldogs had an incredibly successful season, from January to December, as the teams grabbed numerous conference, region and state tournament berths and championships. In June, during the Virginia High School League Group 2A Spring Jubilee at Radford University, Goochland’s Chase Bernstine won his third state championship in a row, besting his brother Ryan in the final 7-6 (6-4), 7-6 (8-6). The Bernstine brothers also won the Group 2A doubles championship for the

second season in a row over Noah Hutchins and Gage Cook of Galax High School by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Goochland’s boys tennis team also played for the Group 2A team championship, but were the runners-up to Maggie Walker Governor’s School 5-2. While Chase graduated from Goochland with the Class of 2017 and now plays at Virginia Tech, Ryan leads a very talented Bulldogs roster that will return to the courts with a lot of momentum this season. In the Group 2A state track meet, the Goochland boys 4x800 relay team of Carter Palen, Larry Minor Jr., Brandon Pleasants and Austin Bruce were state champions once again. The quartet ran an 8:13.96 to win the state title

this season, breaking their record from the previous season of 8:14.13. Benedictine’s wrestling team won its fourth consecutive VISAA state wrestling title in February, defeating rival St. Christopher’s for the championship. Bailey Coats took down St. Christopher’s Carter Davis 3-2 at the 182-pound weight class to seal the deal for the Cadets. Benedictine also won five individual state championships. For Goochland’s wrestling team, Brian Herrera qualified for the Group 2A state championships and finished fourth overall in the state. Benedictine’s baseball team also won the state championship in the VISAA, defeating St. Christopher’s 7-5 on May 20.

More recently in 2017, Goochland’s football, volleyball and cross-country teams all had successful seasons. At the Class 2, Region A state meet on Nov. 1, the Bulldogs girls and boys cross country teams both qualified for the meet, which was the first time in program history both teams qualified for the state meet in the same year. It was also the first time the girls team had ever qualified for states. Zella Warner finished sixth in the state for the girls. On the boys side, Austin Bruce finished fifth in the state to lead the Bulldogs. Goochland’s volleyball team was undefeated throughout the entire season and didn’t lose a single set en route to the Region 2A championship. The Bulldogs, powered

by a handful of talented and experienced seniors, advanced to the state semifinals, where the run came to an end against WilsonMemorial in four sets. Alexis Wiggins and Maddie Goff were each firstteam selections. Wiggins was also named to the All-Metro first team by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Goochland’s football team was also rolling through their season with a perfect record before falling in the playoffs. The Bulldogs run came to an end in the Region 2 championship game in a 21-10 loss to Poquoson. Goochland’s Ricky Mayfield was named firstteam all-state, while Ethan Kopczynski, Jasper Carter and Sam Brooks were second-team.

Twombly was inspired to keep the fight against cancer going and organized the “Ballin’ for a Cure” benefit game that was played at Goochland in February. The game was the end of a week-long Cancer Awareness Week and all proceeds from the game and T-shirt sales went to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. 2. Goochland’s Kailyn Spencer had an impressive season in the circle for the Bulldogs. She tossed a no-hitter in the opening round of the Conference 34 tournament against Prince Edward, was the conference player of the year and was named first-team all-region and all-state. 3. Goochland Alexis Wiggins led the Bulldogs volleyball team with her powerful outside hitting prowess. She was second in the area with 409 kills and was the regional player of the year. 4. Caldwell continued from > 1 National Theater in Richmond. As it turned out, one of the revelers — the young woman sitting up front with him—recognized him. Wide-eyed, she could barely contain herself. “She said ‘Oh my God, you’re him,’” Caldwell remembers. Suddenly, the young woman whirled around to address her somewhat rowdy friends sitting in the back seat. “You all shut up back there!” she yelled. “This is Bob the Singing Uber Driver and he’s gonna sing for us.”

In addition to his work as a driver for Uber and Lyft — as well as for UZERV, a service that allows drivers to schedule rides for both companies in advance — Caldwell also works for the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services as a substitute driver for the non-profit’s van service, helping GFCFS clients reach medical appointments and other services. Caldwell says he has enjoyed singing since he was a child, performing solos at church and singing in the chorus in high school. By his mid-20s he was getting cast in local dinner theatre productions including 1776 and The Music Man.

TV LISTINGS: Find Local TV Shows and Movie Schedules In 1976, Caldwell’s first foray into barbershop music launched him on a now more than fourdecade side career (see box, right) during which he earned numerous national and international honors with quartets The Treasure Chest and The City Slickers. Caldwell is modest when it comes to his gifts — “My wife is far more talented than I am, and she doesn’t even sing,” he said of his wife Sharon, who also works part-time for the GFCFS. Caldwell says he plans to continue driving, and doesn’t even mind the late hours (the most profitable hours to pick up fares are typically late on Friday and

Saturday evenings, when people are leaving downtown clubs and concert venues). He enjoys knowing he gave someone a nice memory to share, or perhaps helped turn someone’s challenging day around. His favorite part, Caldwell says, “is when they say ‘Thank you Bob, for singing to us — you have made our day.’” Bob The Singing Uber Driver is currently offering personal Tacky Light Holiday Tours through the end of the year. Those who would like more information may reach out to him via e-mail at bobcaldwell@ email.com.

A life in song Bob “The Singing Uber Driver” Caldwell first began singing in barbershop quartets in 1976, when a friend invited him to form a group with him. That quartet, called Treasure Chest was together 14 years, and won the MidAtlantic Southern Division barbershop quartet contest three times. A year after that group retired, he joined another quartet, City Slickers, which would go on to with the Southern Divison four times in a row and placed as high as 3rd at the next level contest, the MidAtlantic District. City Slickers would go on to win the MidAtlantic District Senior Championship four times, and in 2003 earned a bronze medal at the International Senior Quartet Championships.
