Central High project nears completion Effort has given new life to county complex that was all but abandoned

Most of what Derek Stamey does for the county in his role as Deputy County Administrator for Operations doesn’t involve the use of a sledgehammer. But several months ago, as his department rolled full steam ahead on the renovations to former Central High School building on Dogtown Road, it was just the right tool for the job. Stamey was working on the most recent phase of the project, which involved renovating both the auditorium and the room that had been the school’s science lab during the days of segregation, back when Central served as the county’s black high school. Stripping away a section of drywall and framing that had been installed around 40 years ago, workers were continuing to refresh and restore a building that is already being used by the community as a recreation and events center. “It’s really hard not to get excited about,” Stamey said, describing the uncovering of pristine tongue-in-groove pine on the auditorium’s stage floor, and the installation of a new warming kitchen to better serve those hosting events in the space. With phase one of the renovations completed, Stamey and his team are eying a February completion date for the work, and looking forward to a ribbon-cutting cersee Central High School > 2

Local art enthusiasts came out to honor the winners of this year’s Goochland PTA Reflections Awards recently, helping to support a thriving youth art scene in the county. Heidi Dewey, the PTA Reflections Committee Leader at Goochland Elementary School, welcomed the group and shared her own reasons for helping to foster the program’s success. “For the past three years I have worked to encourage the students at GES to acknowledge, unleash and allow their inner artist to shine,” Dewey said. “I am passionate about the arts and about fostering opportunities for students to exercise creativity and to develop the skill of reflection.” Dewey invited those in attendance to pause and reflect on this year’s theme, “Within Reach”, as they considered the creative interpretations exhibited by local students. The Reflections Program, founded in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson of the National PTA, was created to give students confidence in their abilities to explore ideas and learn through the arts. Dewey pointed out in her remarks that Amanda Taliaferro of Goochland High School, Emily Ray of Goochland Middle School, and Jennifer Farkas of Randolph Elementary School had all played critical roles in the success of the program in Goochland. “We have also had the privilege to partner with local artists and experts as they have reviewed and judged student art,” Dewey said. “Our team of reviewers encompasses a see Art show > 3

The Goochland County Sheriff’s Department received a few special deliveries over the holidays, thanks to Daniele Brooking, who brought in goody bags for all the deputies scheduled to work. The office also happily accepted special Christmas treats from the group Goochland Moms, and a gift basket from Bon Secours.
Central High School continued from > 1 emony in March. The fact that they could hope to host such an event, however, once seemed far from certain. Several years ago, before Stamey found himself taking up a hammer for the cause, the future of the entire 60,000 square foot complex seemed all but doomed. While the building served as a middle school for a time after Central High School closed, it sat largely unused for years, suffering water damage and other symptoms of neglect. Although the county floated the idea three years ago of either selling or demolishing the building, public resistance to those options led to a plan for renovation. “You have to understand what happened in that building, said Delores Harris, a Central High School alumnus
who attended an early public meeting on the project. “We learned French in that building. We learned drama in that building. Our history is there. These days, the Central High School renovation project is one Stamey describes as a highlight of his time working for the county. “In the eight years I’ve been here we’ve accomplished a lot of things, but this is probably the most rewarding, Stamey said recently, describing the joy in bringing “something back to life that a lot of people thought was not going to make it. Aside from providing a resource for Goochland residents, Stamey said the work on Central High School has been aimed at preserving an important part of the county’s history. They wanted to make sure that future generations know what the school meant to those who attended it, Stamey explained, and to ensure that those voices do not get lost.

Athey continued from > 1 Since taking up the hobby a decade ago, he has developed an uncanny knack for coaxing the pieces of wood he works with into doing exactly what he wants. He chooses colors and patterns that he finds appealing, and then lets the work speak for itself. And speak it does. On a chilly early winter day last month, Athey stood beside a folding table that held several of his intricately carved wooden boxes, each one lacquered to a near-mirror shine and painted with flowers or other designs. There were hand-carved picture frames too, and walking sticks, all of them crafted from pieces of wood Athey picked up here and there. Despite the uncompromising quality of the work, and the hours that go into creating each piece, Athey refuses to make much of a fuss over his talent, saying only that he always sets out to make the current piece he’s working on better than then last. “I just like doing it,” he explained, carefully opening one of the boxes to reveal hand-applied sapphire-blue felt lining. “It’s a hobby for me.”
Athey’s story, like his work, is unconventional: he left school after the third grade to help his father as a woodcutter, and he doesn’t read or write. The poems and psalms he painstakingly carves onto his wooden plaques are done with the help of his wife, ______, who writes them on paper for him to copy. Athey spent his early life in the woodcutting business, then took a job with the grocery distributing company Richfood, where he worked as a lift operator and warehouse employee. He retired ten years ago, and that’s when he began making things with wood. Out in his workshop, which Athey built himself years ago, are the many tools he uses to bring his ideas to life, some of them purchased and some simply rescued from people who no longer wanted or needed them. On display in their home are at least half a dozen examples of Athey’s work. There are coffee tables, consoles and corner shelves, all featuring his distinctive, highly-detailed carving style. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
A look back at those we met last year By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As we dive headfirst into what promises to be an exciting year for Goochland, I hope you will permit us to take one more quick look back at the year that was. Last week, we offered a list of some of the biggest news stories of 2017, highlighting those events that grabbed our attention — for better or worse — and kept us talking. What we didn’t get around to discussing last week, however, were the scores of interesting people we had the privilege to feature in our pages over the course of the last
year, a list that includes talented artists, brilliant scientists and a good number of residents whose sheer originality makes them unforgettable (who could possibly forget Bob the Singing Uber Driver, who was featured in our last issue of the year, or Howard Mayo, owner and operator of a museum dedicated solely to tobacco?). Among those whose stories we shared was Ron White, a Goochland resident whose handcrafted model trucks earn national recognition even as he modestly downplays his incredible work as “just something I like to do.” We also were thrilled to be able
to chat with Dr. Munmaya Mishra, a scientist whose groundbreaking work might only be rivaled by his ability to elegantly explain that work to people outside his field. Among the heroes we were fortunate to meet last year were Corporal Harrison Hankins, who was honored for his bravery after helping save the life of a car crash victim, and World War II veteran Buster White, who shared memories of his time as an aircraft mechanic on the small island of Saipan. As with any year, it was our distinct pleasure to be able to introduce the Christmas Mother to our readers, though 2017 Christmas Mother
Beth Ferguson was already so well known and beloved throughout the community we doubt we broke much news by publishing her story. Of course, even as I present this list I am aware that there are so many Goochlanders we have not yet been blessed to meet, including those who may need a bit of coaxing to realize how special they really are. We can’t tell you how much we look forward to sharing those stories in the coming year — it really is the core of what do her at The Gazette — and we wish all of our wonderful readers a happy and healthy 2018.
From Rickles to Enberg, 2017 saw a number of goodbyes By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m always hesitant to compose year-end wrap-up stories for fear of forgetting something important that happened in the last 12 months. And that peril is more magnified when you begin considering a list of important people who have passed in the last year. I never read one of those memoriam articles without being surprised by at least one of the entries, and it is always with a sense of melancholy to consider the great names who left us as the year closes. As one gets older, the list includes
the names of great icons of a generation, people who shaped and symbolized the era of a group we now call baby boomers, a name that does not aptly describe their current status. It’s a list that continues to mount through time and memoriam, a tally that reminds us all that life is fleeting, and all of us face the same inevitable end. It’s a dose of reality that causes me to pause and consider the certainly of the eternal circle, and how it begins and continues for all of us. Last year will be remembered for many things, but the passing of three icons whose lives vividly provided a

backdrop for the lives many of us remember stand out in my yearend recollection. I first remember seeing Don Rickles on The Johnny Carson Show on a television that flickered a black and white image that seems antique compared with today’s high definition productions. On first impression, Rickles seemed to enjoy a unique sense of freedom that allowed him to query the most uncomfortable of human experiences . . . and dig a needle deep into that very core. Rickles represented a disrespectful, irreverent side of human nature that, up until he took the stage, had
seldom been explored. Insult humor became a regular item on the menu of American culture, and no one did it better than Don Rickles. Who else could point to an aging member of his devoted audience and exclaim, “I contacted the home. You’re going back.” Even through the abrasive exterior, it was clear that Rickles’ heart was indeed more compassionate and loving than his humor might indicate. Through the years, the biggest of stars found some kind of honor at being the brunt of one of Rickles’ viscous attacks. see Those we lost > 7

Letters to the Editor Henley’s impact on county, giving spirit must not be forgotten Editor’s note: The following remarks were presented by Goochland Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Eddie Ferguson at the Dec. 16 funeral service for Chief Howard H. Henley, a WWII veteran and one of the founders of the Goochland Volunteer Fire Department, who passed away on Dec. 12, 2017, at the age of 92. hief Howard H. Henley was a true leader in every respect, able to motivate and inspire people without ever giving an order. He was a firefighter’s Fire Chief, meaning that he worked right alongside the rank and file; no job was ever too small or too large for Chief Henley. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps, as part of the first wave in the Battle of Okinawa. Later in life he was elected to the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, where he served four years, steering the direction of the County. It’s no doubt that Chief Howard Henley gave a lifetime of service to Goochland County Fire-Rescue Department--66 plus years to be exact. He joined Crozier Company 2 in 1952, and in 1957 he transferred his membership to Manakin Company 1, after building his home on Manakin Road. In 1959 he became the County Assistant Fire Chief, working in concert with his brother Chief Earl Henley. Howard Henley would continue to serve as the Assistant Fire Chief for the next 30 years. He was extremely passionate about the fire department, one of the most dedicated and committed

Those we lost continued from > 6 There’s enough hate and ridicule in this world to last a generation, but the man who lived by the insult, offered a kinder side to the art of confrontation. And losing him is almost akin to losing a good friend, just one of the great men and women who exited in 2017. I was never a Glen Campbell fan, but no one from my generation can dispute his influence on the world that surrounded us. Campbell was an accomplished guitarist and homespun vocalist whose songs touched a note in the hearts of the people who listened. When I hear the beginning chords of “Gentle on My Mind,” it still brings goose bumps and a tingling in my spine, but it was just one of the songs that made Campbell an everyday part of our lives. The Rhinestone Cowboy made an indelible mark on American music, but his real impact may have come late in life when he exposed America to a disease all had heard of, but few had seen close up. Campbell’s documentary, “I’ll be Me,” gave us a glimpse of what Alzheimer’s disease does to a man, his family and the millions of fans who remain dedicated. Through the eyes of the
camera, Campbell showed us that the most dire circumstances also have a bright side, as we marveled at a man who could no longer remember vital facts regarding his own life, but never lost the ability to remember intricate notes on a guitar neck. Campbell lost his battle with that cruel disease in 2017, but none of us will ever forget the Wichita Lineman. For most of my life, I could not stand to even hear the voice of a star that many considered Hollywood box office gold. I found the humor of Jerry Lewis too basic and obvious for my tastes, and the high-pitched screams seemed more irritating than funny. The only time I actually watched Lewis was during his annual telethon that raised money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, an organization that sits at the forefront of research and treatment of the chronic disease. Even then, I watched the marathon telecast to catch of glimpse of some other performer, always tuning out when Lewis offered up some of his commentary. Lewis’ telethon ended about the same time my son was diagnosed with MD, and I immediately changed my opinion of the famous comedian and actor. Honestly, I still didn’t care
for his humor, or his movies, but I was so impressed by his commitment to help this group of children that I became a Jerry Lewis fan, of sorts. Lewis spent decades of his life committed to a group of affected children who eventually became known as “Jerry’s Kids.” With failing health and personal struggles of his own mounting in his later years, his compassion and tenacity never wavered regarding a cause that was so close to his heart. My son is one of Jerry’s Kids, and I’ll remain always thankful and dedicated for Lewis’s role in providing hope and the possibility of an eventual cure for a disease that has become so important in the life of my family. Finally, as I was preparing this column, a news flash announced the death of legendary sportscaster Dick Enberg. The silencing of his seemingly eternal youthful voice leaves a void in the lives of many who grew up with Enberg serving us breakfast at Wimbledon, or announcing one of his many Super Bowls. Enberg joins the ranks of Dizzy Dean, Chuck Thompson and the many others whose voices still ring clear in the memories of the millions who lived through their tenures. The mention of those recently deceased is just a small sampling of the many loved and admired people we lost
in 2017. And I suppose it gives us some solace to know that the lives of these giants somehow enhanced the way we remember our past. At least their passing provides a final chance to recognize their achievements, remember their important roles in our lives, and note lives that mattered . . . leaving many of us to simply stop and utter one of Enberg’s signature lines: “Oh, my!”

“We are delighted to welcome Winston Forrest to Goochland,” said Board Secretary Robin Lind. “He has an immensely challenging task ahead as Goochland County faces a 10 percent increase in population over the next three years, redistricting, the creation of an additional precinct and rapid residential growth in the eastern end,” said Lind. “We expect his familiarity with the challenges of growth in northern Virginia will serve Goochland voters very well.” “We look forward to working with Mr. Forrest as we continue to offer the highest level of service to the voters of Goochland County,” added Electoral Board Vice Chair Wanda Taylor. Forrest was chosen from a large field of applicants
who demonstrated in-depth experience and competence in what has become a highly complex job. As Deputy Registrar, Forrest has served as Elections Communications Coordinator in Prince William County where he was responsible for helping staff 91 precincts and responding to press enquiries during elections. He previously served five years as an Officer of Elections in the City of Manassas. Forrest was raised in De Queen, a small town in rural western Arkansas. He has spent the past 20 years in northern Virginia, working in retail, travel and computer industries, before joining the elections office full time. He will succeed Frances Carter Ragland who retires on Jan. 1 after serving the voters of Goochland for 32 years. Goochland County voters have long had a reputation for the highest turnout of voters in the Commonwealth.

Those who addressed the board over the course of the evening described an environment that promoted excellence and prepared students extremely well for the world that awaited them after they graduated. While the idea of selling the property received a tepid response, the possibility that the school could be demolished drew a resounding cry of dismay. It was at this point that the meeting took a turn that

surprised me, particularly after covering local government in other counties for many years. Instead of telling those who had come out to the meeting how they planned to handle the issue, then Goochland County Administrator Becky Dickson and the supervisors simply sat and listened. Slowly, a picture began to emerge of a project that, yes, would be more difficult and costly than simply knocking the building down, but also would add tremendous value to the county if it was done right. Some suggestions were better than others, but all were considered and treated with respect. Fast forward less than two years later, and the Central High School project has become one of the
most innovative and exciting undertakings in Goochland. Renovations are moving along rapidly the gym has already been totally refurbished and a ribbon cutting ceremony could come as early as this spring. Just as important, a key part of Goochland’s AfricanAmerican heritage has been preserved and given the respect it deserves. The work on Central High School is a testament to the wonderful things that can be accomplished when a group of dedicated residents meet a governing body willing to listen and get behind their efforts. It’s further proof that there is something special going on in Goochland these days, and an example of progress for which we can all be thankful.

Goochland takes tourney title over Brunswick By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s boys basketball team went into the holiday break on a hot streak. The Bulldogs defense allowed just one point in the opening quarter and cruised to a 59-38 win over Brunswick
in the championship game of the Goochland Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 22. “When you play a team like Brunswick, which has a tradition and the caliber of the players that they have, you have to be very focused and very disciplined,” Bulldogs
coach Preston Gordon said. “Defensively, the numbers say it all. We held them to eight in the first half. That’s crazy.” Brunswick’s offense couldn’t find any rhythm or success against the Goochland defense. The visiting Bulldogs only sank two field goals in the first
half, the first not coming until 3:24 left in the first half. Even at the foul line, Brunswick shot under 50-percent in the first two quarters. “They were off,” Gordon said. “But, maybe some part of it was our defense. I want to give our guys credit for that. I’m proud of how we played.
That first half set the tone in my opinion.” Another category of the defense that the Bulldogs dominated Brunswick in was rebounding. In the times that Brunswick was able to get a shot off, mostly off target, the Bulldogs defenders were grabbing defensive
rebounds and limiting second-chance opportunities from Brunswick. “We had watched them and we had seen what they could do on the outside,” Gordon said. “Their biggest offensive threat is in transisee Basketball> 10

Reid Gilley said it was always a great relief to hear “Car 2 mark 10-8, responding on a serious car accident or a working fire. Howard always knew what to do, able to work through difficult and complex situations in a methodical manner, and he never got excited. During his time in the department, Chief Henley saw many changes come to Goochland County, to include hundreds of new members, new stations being organized and built, several generations of fire apparatus purchases, better protective equipment, and the inception of the rescue squads in the mid to late 1960s, to just name a few. In 1988, the same year he retired from Luck Stone, Chief Howard Henley was appointed County Fire Chief, as a volunteer, and served in that capacity for the next five years, until summer of 1993. Outside of the fire department, Chief Henley was a talented craftsman, and loved wood working. His famous handmade wooden bowls were always the center of attention and the most desired door prizes at the Annual Company 1 Christmas Dinner, and are great examples of the perfection in his work. Chief Henley was not only a fire service leader in Goochland County, but also across the entire state. He was a member of the VA State Fire Chiefs Association, the VA Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, and an Instructor for the VA Dept. of Fire Programs. Chief Henley had a love for teaching and sharing his knowledge, and instructed firefighter classes all over the State of Virginia. He was recognized
as a subject matter expert, and one the best fire instructors in the business. He also taught many vehicle extrication classes over the years. In fact, in 2008, the Goochland County Fire-Rescue Training Center was dedicated and named after Howard and his brother Earl, known today as the Henley Fire-Rescue Training Center. Chief Henley reluctantly accepted his Lifetime membership award in 2014; although he was eligible some 50 years earlier, he was humble and didn’t want this honor until much later in his service. You see, this is who Howard was, a quiet and gentle man, with a generous soul, a leader who was truly a public servant, who didn’t want any attention or recognition for all his accomplishments. We are thankful for Chief Henley’s service, wisdom, and leadership, and he will be dearly missed. God Bless Chief Henley, his wife Eva Henley, and his family. everal months ago, seeking adventure, Goochland residents David and Lesley Greenberg decided to embark on a 5,000-mile, 15-day trip to the heart of Russia. After flying from Dulles International Airport to St. Petersburg, Russia, via Viking Tours, the couple reported that they thoroughly enjoyed their journey. “From the Alexandrinsky Theater’s beautifully costumed production of Swan Lake, to Carl Faberge’s jaw-dropping, incredibly detailed nine gold egg collection, we were continually amazed, said David, who served as General Counsel of LeClairRyan before stepping down five years ago to open his own office where he practices business law. After four sightseeing days, the couple boarded the cruise ship Trevor with some 200 other pas-
sengers for a seven-day excursion to Moscow, during which they found the food excellent, the citizens welldressed and “English spoken by most all. They did encounter heavy traffic at times, David reported, and “interestingly, in the country, we did see several abandoned factories, and in Moscow, a display of wrecked vintage World War II tanks and trucks. After growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, David married Lesley, the “sweetheart of his high school fraternity 52 years ago. In 1969, he moved to Richmond to accept a memorable clerkship with the Virginia Supreme Court. Today, he and Lesley describe their four grandchildren as “the light of our life and what they are most grateful for. Contributed by C. Frank Wentzel. Saints best Cadets 40-25 at Rumble on the River By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
St. Christopher’s and Benedictine’s wrestling teams are quite familiar with each other. Facing off several times with the VISAA state championship on the line will do that between two successful programs. The Saints and Cadets met once again on Dec. 21 in the Rumble on the River, which also featured a middle school all-star match as well as Averett University taking on Greensboro University prior to the main event of the night. While the Cadets got the best of the Saints in the last meeting between the two
Basketball continued from >9 tion. We knew we had to stop the transition. Their other key was their defense and their press and who is going to make the least amount of mistakes. It showed tonight.” Goochland’s offense, however, was clicking on all cylinders. Deion Harwood hit two 3-point shots in the first half and Sam Brooks, Kameron Holman and JaMel Allen all found opportunities through the Brunswick defense to find the hoop. At halftime, Goochland lead 25-8. Harwood and Holman both scored 15 points against Brunswick. Holman in particular is one player who is starting to come along for the Bulldogs. “We’ve talked to him and gotten in his ear a little bit,”
“We’ve been doing alright,” Hall said. “It’s still pretty early in the season. We did well at McDonough and finished around 30th out of 121 teams at Beasts of the East, so that wasn’t bad.” Benedictine participated in the Stephen Altorfer Memorial Tournament on Dec. 22-23 at Mountain View and then the Mount Mat Madness on Dec. 29-30 at Mount St. Joe’s. At the Stephen Altorfer Memorial Tournament, the Cadets finished second overall with 164 points. Only Brooke Point outscored the Cadets with 172.5. Brenden Barnes and Riley Vaughan won their weight classes.
teams at the 2017 state championships, St. Christopher’s won this round with a 40-25 win over Benedictine. “This was the first of two duals against St. Chris and hats off to them, they had our number tonight,” coach Ryan Hall said. The Saints grabbed wins in the 106, 113 and 120 weight classes before Michael Albergo won his 126-pound weight class match with a 10-0 major decision. Joshua Yost made it backto-back wins for the Cadets with a 7-5 decision at 132. “He’s wrestling really, really well,” Hall said. “He beat a two-time state champion from St. Chris, a kid he’s never beaten before. He’s working
hard in the room, not making excuses and grinding hard. I’m glad he got rewarded with a big win like that.” Nicholas Johnson won at the 152 class with a pin in 2:20, followed by Christos Avgeros winning by pin in 2:42 at 160. William Coats won at 185 by forfeit. But, the Saints grabbed wins in the rest of the classes on the schedule for the win. Hall said that he hopes the defeat fuels his team for the rest of the season and prepares them for the next time they’ll see the Saints. “I know what we need to work on,” he said. “We’re going to work on it, but at the end of the day, it’s up to them. I can give them the keys, but
they have to drive the bus. A couple matches could have gone either way. Two matches go the other way, we have a narrow victory. Not to make excuses, but we were down some starters that could have changed things up as well. They won some tight ones. Three matches they won in the last 25 seconds, two of which were pins. I don’t know if the wrestling gods were on their side or not, but a little inexperience and panic button on our end and they stayed composed and wrestled for a full six minutes.” One thing that Hall wants to work on is attacking on offense. “For some of us tonight, I don’t know if we were jittery
or nervous or trying to hit a big move too early,” he said. “We wrestled our offense. We also need to get better on bottom and some of our guys had trouble getting out. But, we need to finish the match. Their starters won matches I expected them to win and our studs won matches I expected them to win. We have to close out and we got our butts kicked on closing out matches. We really only won one close one, where they won about four or five.” Benedictine rolled past Louisa and Glen Allen In its early season matches this year and participated in tournaments at McDonough in Maryland and the Beasts of the East in Delaware.
Gordon said. “His capabilities are as high as he’s going to be push himself. That’s what we talked about, about if he’s going to push himself hard in practice and in games and play to the max. Tonight, he did that. He was able to get to the outside and get some shots.” In the second half, the offensive fireworks continued for Goochland as they went on an 8-1 run to open the third quarter. Brunswick found more success against the Goochland defense in the third quarter than the first half, sinking three field goals, but also was putting the Bulldogs in tough situations, which resulted in fouls. Brunswick was in the oneand-one bonus with 31.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter. However, despite the advantage in fouls for Brunswick, the visiting
Bulldogs only gleaned four points over nine chances. Goochland’s defense led the rest of the way, holding Brunswick at bay as the offense continued to cushion its lead en route to the 21-point win. The win was a bit of a redemptive win for Goochland from the Conference 34 playoffs last season against Brunswick. “Our guys had a bit of a chip on their shoulder after what happened last year,” Gordon said. “In the first round of the conference, we let one get away. Credit to them, their experience paid off last year. Our experience played this year.” The Bulldogs opened their holiday tournament with a 64-31 win over King William on Dec. 21. Allen scored 13 points in that game, while Holman had 10. Devin McCray had eight rebounds.
After dropping the season opener to Powhatan, Goochland has won six games in a row. They played against Brunswick on Jan. 3. When the Bulldogs headed to Brunswick, they’ll have had some downtime away from a full-fledged game on the court from the holiday break, which was a chance for the team to rebound from the first part of the season and prepare for the stretch run through the remaining regular season and the playoffs down the road. “I wish we could keep playing, just because you want to keep that momentum going,” Gordon said. “At the same time, we have a couple guys who are banged up and need a little bit of a rest. They need that time. We talked to our guys about spending time with your families and take advantage of those times. We have guys that have little tweaks here and there who needed this little break.”
Goochland’s Deion Harwood got the Bulldogs off to a fast start against Brunswick on Dec. 22, sinking two 3-point shots in the first quarter. He was one of the top scorers for Goochland with 15 points, including three 3-point shots.
