While few people enjoy paying taxes, Goochland residents may have at least one thing to smile about when they open their checkbooks: the county was recently named the Most TaxpayerFriendly County in the nation by the American City County Exchange. The award, which is bestowed after taking into consideration a locality’s current taxes, spending, debt and level of transparency, validates the gains county leadership has made over the past several years, said County Administrator John Budesky. “While we don’t work to achieve awards or acknowledgment, it is an honor to see that the efforts to run an efficient and professional local government service system here in Goochland have been recognized,”

A toast to brew Gov. Terry McAuliffe joined Hardywood Park Craft Brewery co-founders Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh and Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Todd Haymore on Monday to celebrate Hardywood’s soon-to-be completed 60,000-square-foot brewing facility in Goochland’s West Creek business park. A self-described craft beer enthusiast, McAuliffe called the facility, which is expected to bring up to 250,000 new visitors to Goochland and generate up to 60 new full-time jobs, a “win-win for all of us.” McKay confirmed Monday that the company is planning to begin operating in West Creek in February, with a grand opening scheduled for early April.

Agnew also strongly suggested that vehicle keys never be left in a glove box or other place where they could easily be found by a wouldbe car thief. — Roslyn Ryan

the county officials or staff applied to receive. “We did not solicit this,” Peterson said, “it found us.” To District 2 representative Manuel Alvarez, what the ACCE award committee recognized in Goochland was the result of a steady, focused approach, one to which the entire board is committed. Transparency and fiscal responsibility, he said, have been at the heart of every decision they have made. “ The live streaming of our meetings, the online check registry and more than 50 town hall meetings over the last six years have enabled
our citizens to stay aware of what we are doing with their tax dollars and gives them an opportunity to provide input into the process,” said Alvarez. “Our new 25-year Capital Improvement Plan will ensure that we continue to focus on our priorities for many years to come.” To District 1 supervisor Susan Lascolette, the win came thanks to a true team effort. Said Lascolette, “It is very humbling to be recognized on a national level for the results our staff, our citizens and our volunteers have been able to achieve. What a great place to live!”

Farewell to county’s littlest road warrior A Goochland couple said goodbye to a beloved member of their family last week, when Max and Debra Garner’s dog Shaggy passed away. Shaggy first became something of a celebrity around the county years ago, when Max began taking him for motorcycle rides on his Harley. Never without his helmet, vest and goggles, Shaggy clearly enjoyed the trips as much as Max did. The rides had to be put on hold for a while when Max served a military deployment, but once he returned the two joyfully hit the open road.

Dear Editor, This is in response to a petition that is being circulated online through Nextdoor and Facebook concerning broadband options in Goochland. Would it be nice to have hardline internet? Sure. Has the current slate of county supervisors been working to find solutions? Yes. Will areas of the county that do not currently have landline broadband be brought into the 20th (yes 20th) century? Not likely. With the new technologies, such as 5G, still being developed, likely new connections to houses in Goochland will be wireless. The issue with this is that many people do not want communications towers in view of their property. Without more towers, there will not be any chance of bringing these new technologies to Goochland. Current satellite connections are now able to handle VPN and HD video streaming. And, in the next couple of years, these satellite connections are to just get even that much better, allowing for 4K streaming. The true fact is that our satellite connection we have is better than a business DSL connection we had at an office in Troy (Fluvanna County), due to CenturyLink overselling their system. When I compare our satellite connection I find that it is able to handle more devices and has much higher bandwidth than residential DSL in Rockbridge County. The FCC does not treat data connections as utilities, thus there is little the county can do to push vendors to do on this. The likely best way to get a high speed connection beyond current wireless and satellite connections would be to create a co-op with your neighbors, have a microwave connection, or if you are lucky and see Letters > page 12

Cadets wrestling battling through season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Benedictine’s wrestling team has been haunted by the injury bug and illnesses this season. Thus far, the Cadets have had as few as three to as many as seven of their starting wrestlers miss events this season.
But, don’t mistake Benedictine for making excuses. It’s all about that next man up. “You’re down, but you’re never out,” coach Ryan Hall said. The Cadets only had seven starters at the Stephen Altorfer Memorial Tournament
on Dec. 22-23, but still put together a second place finish out of 16 teams with only 10 wrestlers. Then, at Mount Mat Madness on Dec. 29-30, Benedictine traveled to Baltimore for the tournament. The Cadets were fourth out of 30 teams with “four or five” starters down, according
to Hall. Most recently, Benedictine wrestled in the Battlefield Duals against some of the top public school teams in the state. “We beat a very good Colonial Forge team, we beat Potomac High School as well as Brentsville District High School,” Hall said. “We lost a
tough one to Battlefield High School, 45-31. It was a one or two match swing. Battlefield is the number one high school team in Virginia. Once again, if I’m not making excuses, we got beat, but we are missing some starters who could have made the difference for us. We keep rolling with the punches and we’ve yet to put
out the lineup that I expect to be ready to go for states and Prep Nationals.” While the results have been consistently solid for the Cadets, the prognosis for having the full lineup back shows it’ll still be a bit before everyone is ready to go. see Wrestle> 9

Roundup: Goochland Y ready for winter season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland YMCA swim team is ready to get back into action for the winter season. After a fall season in which the team was away from its pool for practice due to the pool bubble’s restoration, the team is looking forward to a new season with a completed bubble. “We had to move our practice location and time,” coach Helen Brown said. “Our parents are awesome. I don’t think the swim team members noticed too much of a difference. When they got to practice, they did their best. The team members who participated in meets saw improvements in technique and times.” The Manta Rays have four swimmers returning who are in the Top 10 out of the area YMCAs in their respective events. Nathanial Harris is second overall in the 25 free and Jack Lawson is fourth in the same event.
Wrestle continued from >8 “It’s going to be a little while,” Hall said. “I’m hoping to get a couple studs back this week. It’s hit or miss. We had another kid suffer an injury this weekend. I don’t think it’s anything serious, but we have to see what the trainer says. He’ll probably be out for a bit, hopefully no more than two weeks. It’s just part of the season. You adapt and adjust.” Hall said that the injuries
Lillian Beatty is second in the 25 breast. Ryan Johnson is the best overall in the fly and second overall in the 50 free. In the fall season, Brown wrote the team had 32 swimmers competing, with nine firsts, 11 seconds and 14 third-place finishes over the course of the season. Additionally, the Manta Rays are coming off a very successful showing from the summer Greater Richmond Aquatic League season. While Brown wrote that the two seasons are run “completely differently,” she is excited all the same for the upcoming season. “I love having variety in our YMCA swim program,” Brown wrote. “The best part of both programs is the incorporation of using experienced swimmers to mentor our novice swimmers.” The Manta Rays took to the pool for their first practice of the season on Jan. 9. The first meet of the season is Feb. 3 at Petersburg, with the Feb. 17 meet being at the same location.
and illnesses that have hit the team this season are another example of the importance of the ‘B’ team working hard in practice. “It’s a great opportunity for those guys,” Hall said. “Those guys work really hard in the room too. They may not be quite as talented as a starter, but in those areas where we do have depth, it’s next guy up and a great opportunity.” The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Cadets as they faced Lee-Davis, Monacan and Eastern View
On March 3, Goochland will Midlothian, Tuckahoe and Shady Grove, while on March 17, the team will face Tuckahoe, Chickahominy and Petersburg Northside. The season ends on March 24 with the Holiday Classic at SwimRVA. “We plan to build on our fall season,” Brown wrote. “As a team, we look to improve our technique as well as to improve our overall swim times.” COLLEGE FOOTBALL Benedictine graduate Clelin Ferrell competed for the chance to play for the National Championship with the Clemson Tigers. Unfortunately for Ferrell and the Tigers, they fell to Alabama 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl. Ferrell had four tackles in the game, including two solo and a sack.

Some members of the Goochland YMCA swim team at CHAMPS gathered for this photo. Shown are, from left, front row, Brandon Watkins, Tanner Jenkins, Tyler Davis and Sasha Babic; second row, Coach Helen Brown, Tyler Nelson, Aizlinn Reikalas and Bayleigh Allen; and, third row, Joe Hardman, Garrett Kemmerly, Rose Evans, Laura Brown and Grace Kemmerly.
Several Goochland High School games and meets were postponed due to the snow that hit the area. The Bulldogs boys bas-
ketball team had its Jan. 3 matchup against Bluestone rescheduled to Jan. 18 and a road game at RandolphHenry rescheduled to Jan. 22. Also, the Bulldogs game against Prince Edward that was scheduled for Jan. 8 will
be played on Jan. 13. Goochland’s girls basketball team will travel to Bluestone on Jan. 18, and will host Randolph-Henry on Jan. 22. The Goochland wrestling team was scheduled
to participate in a tri-meet with Hermitage and Mills Godwin on Jan. 4, but that meet was moved to Jan. 18. Finally, Goochland’s swim team will swim against Patrick Henry on Jan. 27, moved from Jan. 6.
on Jan. 10 prior to competing in the top division of the Virginia Duals in Hampton on Jan. 13. Hall said that the Cadets wrestle the most difficult schedule in the state and the constant grind has its advantages and disadvantages. “Disadvantage is you’re rolling a lot, so you get a lot of matches and it’s rare you’ll have all 14 for various reasons,” he said. “But, if you’re able to put it together at the end, when it really matters, it preps everyone for it. I think
it’s a culture thing. My guys know that when you step on the mat for Benedictine, you better compete and compete hard.” Nick Johnson is one of Hall’s wrestlers and said that he’s looking forward to the upcoming grind of a tough week of wrestling. “It’s all about mental toughness,” he said. “Everyone is banged up. But, at the end of February, you want to be standing on that podium. You just have to push through. That’s mental toughness.”
Johnson said that winning is a huge motivation for him, especially at large events like the Virginia Duals. His ultimate goal this season is beyond the Virginia Duals. “I want to be a state champion and an All-American,” he said. “I fell short last season. But, this is the year.” The Cadets are a little over a month away from the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Duals and Hall knows that it’s going to be a tough climb for the
Cadets to defend their state championship this season. “It’s going to be very, very hard to do,” he said. “We’re underdogs to do it. We’re going up against what I think is the best St. Christopher’s team that I’ve ever seen. They just have to keep grinding and stay focused and hit reset on the mind come February. All bets are off then. You go with the guys that you’ve got.” Benedictine will face the Saints one more time in the VISAA state duals at St. Christopher’s on Jan. 26-27.

Letters continued from > 6 live near BES or Rt6 you can access a POP on the fiber runs, something not available on Rt 250. Even the cell towers in this area don’t have hardline connections. They rely on a microwave PTP to provide enough bandwidth due to no fiber connections easily accessible. There just is not the population density nor the infrastructure in much of the county to have hardline connections installed to the premises. Did we really have to go to northern Virginia, that “other state” to find a replacement? And, I understand the two previous assistants in that office did not wish to stay on. That means a new registrar who knows nothing about this county and 2 new assistants, who may or may not know the citizens either. Does this sound like an

Suppose something comes up in Goochland, as it did in Harrisonburg in the 2016 election when a 21 year old JMU student falsified registration forms with the names of deceased people, one of which was the father of the judge and an assistant in the registrar’s office recognized the name as being deceased; another assistant in the office noticed other irregularities where on other forms middle names, birth dates and social security numbers were incorrect and, of course, the police were called.

Do you think this can’t happen here in Goochland with all new personnel in the registrar’s office? Winston Forrest, the new registrar, has his work cut out for him. The eyes of every voter in Goochland will be upon the activities of that office. We, in Goochland, have com to expect fair and competent personnel, and I hope the integrity of that office will be held to the same high standard to which we are accustomed. Ann A. Trying to get in shape in 2018? Studies show what you put in your body may have greater impact than previously thought
T
rying to avoid certain foods during a weight loss regimen is more difficult than one would imagine. Although a healthy combination of healthy eating and exercise is essential to successful, sustainable weight loss, research indicates that one component of the weight loss recipe holds more power: diet. A 2015 study from the Loyola University Health System found that, contrary to popular belief, exercise does not help a person

Although both diet and exercise are important components of healthy lifestyles, for those strictly looking to lose weight, a healthy diet seems to offer greater results than physical activity.
lose weight. The researchers responsible for that study examined the link between physical activity and obesity for years. They initially believed physical activity would serve as a catalyst for weight loss. But the evidence indicated otherwise. Exercise increases appetite, which can lead to increased caloric intake. Furthermore, it seems that people who are extremely active burn a similar number of calories as moderately active people. Increasing physical activity to burn calories works up to a certain point, but eventually the body will adjust to keep energy use stable. According to Herman Pontzer of Hunter College at the City University of New York, who studied people in subsistence farming or hunter-gathering societies against those who live in developed countries who are more sedentary, less active people’s energy expenditure increased alongside increases in physical activity. But at high-

er levels of activity, calorie burn plateaued. Pontzer found that the body works hard to maintain balance. Calories being burned by exercise will not equal the same level of calorie reduction offered by eating or drinking less. The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus states that jogging or swimming laps for 30 minutes can burn as many as 350 calories. ItÕs much easier to achieve the same calorie reduction by skipping two large sodas one day. That’s important to note, as many people do not sustain the level of exercise needed for consistent weight loss. According to the study “Prevalence of physical activity and obesity in US counties: A road map for action,” published in Population Health Metrics, the percentage of people who became more physically active in the United States increased between 2001 and 2009. However, this increase in level of activity was

matched by an increase in obesity in almost all counties studied during the same period. The study showed that increased physical activity alone has a small impact on obesity. But exercise should be not abandoned in favor of making smarter food choices. Physical activity is important for much more in terms of personal health. For example, physical activity reduces the burden of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Many studies and reviews also point out how physical activity can improve outcomes in pulmonary diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological diseases, and depression. Diet is an effective tool for weight loss, more so than even exercise. However, exercise remains an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Both diet and exercise are keys to long-term health. — MetroCreative Content

built his entire house, on his own, from the ground up. Last week in these pages we featured an extraordinarily talented woodworker, a man who is completely selftaught. All around us, if we care to look, are people who have been blessed with incredible gifts. I now have enough years behind me that it is unlikely I will become a world-renowned virtuoso on the guitar (or any musical instrument, for that matter). Barring some kind of divine intervention, I’m not going to become an Olympic athlete or sing at Carnegie Hall. And I’m OK with that. This year, I’m going to revel in the talents of others and applaud their greatness. It’s a tough job, but I must say I’m looking forward to it.

I have never been a tremendous sports fan, but I have been fortunate enough to attend a number of Major League Baseball games. There is always that moment of going through the tunnel and getting that first glimpse of the players on the field — people who are literally among the best in the world at what they do—that sends a little shiver of excitement down my spine. Even after having been to dozens of games, it is still the same. It isn t just world-class athletes: I know two different women who can sing like angels, and a man who

First responders offer another reason to love Goochland Dear Editor, The new Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services building is beautiful and almost finished! So, imagine our dismay when we arrived last Tuesday to see water cascading through the louvres and onto the roof. Even worse, water was pouring through the ceiling into the new Food Pantry and Clothes Closet areas. A hasty “911” brought Company 5/Goochland Fire and Rescue down the icy driveway within minutes. They knew just what to do. They cut off the water supply and identified the broken sprinkler connection. We were relieved and grateful for their quick response and efficiency, even as we stared at the pools of water covering our bright
shiny floors. I suspect that mopping and drying are not in a fire fighter’s job description. We would not have been surprised if they left after the leak was stopped and our building superintendent arrived on the scene. We were surprised that they all grabbed a squeegee or mop and went to work! Chief MacKay led the effort with his cheerful encouragement and Shop Vac in hand. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Fire and Rescue staff and volunteers who not only responded but also went beyond to help resolve the great water event of 2018. As an organization that depends on volunteers to achieve our mission, we appreciate the leadership, training, and positive attitude exhibited during this experience. Congratulations and many thanks on a job well done! We hope the community will join us to celebrate our

new facilities at our Open House on Friday, Feb. 2, from 3-5 p.m. Sincerely, Sally K. Graham Executive Director Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Dear Editor, On New Year’s Eve, I needed the assistance of our Goochland Fire & Rescue Company 5 services. My wife called for an ambulance to take me to St. Mary’s Hospital. Almost immediately, Dottie, our neighbor and Company 5 volunteer, was at our door to lend assistance and provide encouragement. Soon after, the truck pulled up with Robbie driving, who is Fire & Rescue employee and Adam, an EMT volunteer. Shortly after, they had me down our front stairs and in a gurney securely in the vehicle. Adam confidently made a thorough assessment of my condition. Then, Adam and I had an
engaging conversation. We discovered that we have mutual acquaintances, young children in Goochland schools, and we both feel fortunate to live in Goochland for many reasons. Adam is one of those people that makes you feel comfortable even when you are in pain. When we got to St. Mary’s Emergency Room, both Adam and Robbie swiftly transported me to an examination room. Practically everybody in the ER knew Adam and they were glad to see him. After receiving excellent care, I was able to go home to quietly celebrate the new year. Although the day started off rough, my nice experience with Dottie, Adam, and Robbie made me feel better. Again, I am overwhelmed with our good fortune to live in Goochland — a wonderful community.
