‘Dooleys’ examines Maymont residents’ influence
For drive-in, a good sign indeed Local theater owners’ long wait for highway signage is finally over By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For nearly as long as John Heidel and his wife have owned their drive-in movie theater in western Goochland, they have been working to secure a highway sign that would help direct motorists to their location. Last week, after nine long years, their efforts finally paid off. Thanks in large part to the work of
Goochland supervisor Susan Lascolette and newly-elected Del. John McGuire (R-Glen Allen), officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have agreed to allow drive-in theaters to be featured on Tourist-Oriented Directional Signs, or TODS, those blue signs that help

Goochland students compete in Legion oratory contest Contributed report
On Jan. 10, American Legion Post 215 held their annual Oratorical Contest, during which Goochland High School students Gus Payne and David Tremain researched the Constitution and its Amendments in preparation for the event.
Each student gave an eight- to 10-minute prepared speech and a threeto five-minute impromptu speech. For each speech, there were no notes allowed during the presentation. With the impromptu speech, they were given a topic and five minutes to
prep. They were judged on their knowledge, skill, and poise under pressure. Gus Payne moved on to the District Level competition, the results of which were not available at press time. He was coached by the Post’s Oratorical Coordinator, John Myers.
Payne and Tremain, along with their families and their Government teacher, Alexa Moser, will be attending the Post’s Feb. 20 Membership Meeting, where they will be honored during an awards ceremony. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

In many cases, authors choose the subjects of their books themselves. For Goochland author and historian Mary Lynn Bayliss, however, the most recent project she embarked on appears to have chosen her. Bayliss, whose book “The Dooleys of Richmond: an Irish Immigrant Family in the Old and New South” offers a richly detailed portrait of one of Richmond’s most influential families, said she was first approached about taking on the task while chatting with a fellow guest at a party. Best known by many Central Virginians as the family who called Maymont home — and eventually donated the property to the City of Richmond for use as a park — the Dooleys were major players in the South’s business and philanthropic circles during the late 19th and early 20th century, donating vast sums to support public health, education and the arts. Drive-in continued from > 1 alert passing drivers of important entertainment or cultural resources in a given area. Heidel had previously been told that his Goochland Drive-In was classified an attraction, disqualifying it from the list of places that could be featured on a TOD sign. Heidel continued to plead his case, “but we always just met with the wall of resistance,” he said. McGuire, for his part, said he first heard about the sign saga while on the campaign trail last year, and soon began to notice a familiar refrain. McGuire says he kept hearing again and again how people from out of state had come
Bayliss continued from > 1 Foundation board member and volunteer who also holds a doctorate in English Literature and History, suspected that delving into their would provide a window into one of the most tumultuous periods of Richmond’s history. What she didn’t know was that her research into the family’s story—a captivating, made-for-the-silver screen tale involving immigration, war, and vast fortunes gained and lost—would ultimately span the next two decades and involve hundreds of hours spent sifting carefully through archives and newspapers. Bayliss’ task was made more difficult by the fact that many of the family’s personal papers had been lost or destroyed. Without those resources to draw from, Bayliss’ work is particularly remarkable said Dale Wheary, Maymont Curator and Director of Historical Collections and Programs, calling the book “the definitive source” on James Dooley and

all the way to Goochland to visit the theater but struggled to find it. McGuire inquired about the issue, only to be told that it was a lost cause. It was then that he realized he might be able to help — or at least try. “I was a Navy SEAL,” McGuire said, “and we like a challenge. I wanted to see ‘Can we solve this thing?’” McGuire said he realized after talking with VDOT officials that they might be able to find some common ground among all parties involved. A meeting was arranged in his office with Heidel and VDOT representatives, and the group was eventually able to reach an administrative solution. The new signs should be up within the next 45 days, McGuire says, and will be a
testament to what can happen when people come together to find “common sense solutions.” Ultimately, he says, it’s not just about helping one business, but also about making the entire region a more enticing place for visitors from all over the state and beyond. “When people come in from out of state and they buy food here, when they buy gas here and enjoy the area, that’s good for Goochland,” he said. To Heidel, the news about the signage was huge not just for him, but also for the five other remaining drive-in theaters in the state. “It’s just a win-win situation, and I couldn’t be more pleased,” he said. “It’s a validation — it means everything.”
his wife, Sallie. To John Kneebone, a professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University, Bayliss’ book did a masterful job of illuminating a figure to whom he hadn’t previously given much consideration. “I suppose I thought of him as a really rich guy who was a philanthropist, but he didn’t really figure into the way I thought about Richmond history,” said Kneebone. “That the Dooleys were Irish in origin and Catholic in religion meant that they stood to the side of the Richmond-Americancultural mainstream, and that gives the book, too, a perspective for observation. The Dooleys were insiders, yet not quite, and that situation sheds light on them and on Richmond.” Bayliss said she found an undeniable joy in uncovering and stitching together the story of a group she describes as one of the city’s most prominent — and philanthropic-families. “It’s a million-piece puzzle, but every once in a while
you get a new piece,” Bayliss explained. “Eventually, over the years, it begins to fill in.” As she continued on her quest, Bayliss says she began to understand more and more just what unique figures both John Dooley and James, his son, had been. Bayliss has always enjoyed writing history as if it were a novel, she says, and these men’s stories were perfect for that form. To her, illuminating the lives of lesser known historical figures is always a worthwhile endeavor, even if it takes a great deal of digging to uncover the truth. “What they did in their day is still affecting us in our day,” she said. “And that is just extraordinary.” These days, Bayliss can’t help but laugh as she looks back on the early days of her research into the Dooley family, back when she wasn’t sure what surprises lay ahead. “I had no idea what I would find,” she says happily, “but it turned out to be extraordinarily good.”

FAYE H. KILPATRICK Faye Hines Kilpatrick, 90, of Crozier, and long-time resident of Litchfield, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home among loved ones, her treasured Maltese, Leo, lying at her side, on Jan. 23, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Robert D. KILPATRICK Kilpatrick; her parents, Ellwood Raeford Hines and Clarissa Jane Carter Lewis Hines, of Richmond; and by two sisters, Margaret Patton (Sam) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Mary Louise Tate of Norfolk. She leaves behind five children, Robert “Patrick” D. Kilpatrick Jr. (Heidi) of Los Angeles, California, Kathleen S. Kilpatrick of Crozier, Lauren D.
Kilpatrick (Richard Petrovits) of Cromwell, Connecticut, Tracy C. Kilpatrick of Palmyra, and T. David Kilpatrick (Korri) of Fargo, North Dakota; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, Edwin Hines of Chesterfield. A life-long student, athlete and teacher, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a graduate of John Marshall High School and Westhampton College, University of Richmond. She earned two master’s degrees in education and psychology from the University of Hartford and Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, respectively, moving from the classroom and playing fields as a beloved teacher and coach to guidance counseling and family counseling in the later years of her long career in both Virginia and Connecticut. With their move to Connecticut in 1957, in support of Mr. Kilpatrick’s work with the Connecticut General Insurance Company, Mrs. Kilpatrick’s southern charm, energy and wit contributed greatly to her husband’s rise to head the company and later, CIGNA Corporation, and to his success in those positions. A fierce tennis player and avid horsewomen, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a member the Country Club of Virginia, where she played tennis until the age of 85, and of the Litchfield County Hounds and Deep Run Hunt Club in Goochland. She continued to shoot and foxhunt well into her 80s and to enjoy trail riding until just the year before her passing. She was committed to preserving land, historic places and history, and contributed to many nonprofit and educational organizations, including the Virginia Historical Society and Montpelier; the universities of Virginia and Richmond; St. Christopher’s School and St. Andrew’s School, both in Richmond; and recently, to
Sweet Briar College, whose unique role in fostering and honing the leadership skills of women she long promoted during her many years as a counselor of high school students, and recently, as a donor. Mrs. Kilpatrick gave as well of her time and talents in support of her values: she was active, often as a leader, in a number of civic and political organizations, including, among others, the Chapel Guild of Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond; the Board of the Tandem Friends School; the Board the University of Virginia School of Continuing Education; a member of the Monticello Cabinet; a docent at Wilton House in Richmond; and as a volunteer at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. An avocational genealogist, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a member of the Jamestowne Society; the Colonial Dames of America; the National Society of Colonial Dames; the Daughters of the American Revolution; and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was as well the founder and a long-time member of the Republican Women’s Club of Goochland County. The family wishes to thank her long-time helper, Angela Payne, and the careful caregivers at Paradise Home Care and Intrepid Hospice, who smoothed the last months of Mrs. Kilpatrick’s passage. The service was held on Saturday, Jan. 27, in Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond, and a reception followed immediately in the atrium of the nearby Gottwald Science Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Kilpatrick’s memory to the University of Richmond, Robert D. Kilpatrick Scholarship Fund.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Walker offered example of quiet courage, conviction By Roslyn Ryan Editor
T
he news, when it came last week, was delivered by email, signaled by a ping and a pop-up news alert on my phone. The reason for the alert was to share that noted Civil Rights leader Wyatt Tee Walker had passed away at his home in Chester at the age of 88, bringing to a close a life spent working tirelessly on behalf of equality, understanding and peace. I did not experience the early days of the movement Walker was such an instrumental part of, nor was I ever privileged to meet him personally.
My only very small connection to him, outside of a fascination with the work he did and a deep admiration for his tremendous courage and fortitude, was that he once coached a youth a football team that my father played on in Yonkers, New York. My father remembered Rev. Walker fondly and spoke of him often, and his certainly could be counted among the millions whose lives Walker touched. It is interesting, though not entirely surprising, that a cursory Google search will not produce many notable quotes from Walker. There are no t-shirts or coffee mugs emblazoned with his photo for sale. And yet, the impact he had on the
world in which we live is clear and undeniable. Most of the adults of my generation certainly understand what racism and prejudice are, and many have witnessed those twin evils for themselves. What most of us would likely find harder to fathom, however, are the kinds of institutionalized, legally enshrined injustices that Walker chose to face down. There are plenty of examples of people taking to the streets and fighting for what they believe in these days, and I wouldn’t dare belittle or demean a single one. But it is difficult to imagine that any fight could be quite as punishing as that waged by those who demand human rights
from a society that doesn’t even seem to fully agree that they are human. Walker never abandoned his commitment to Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of nonviolent resistance in the face of oppression, and likely did more to help elevate the cause of equality than history has recorded. And while his name may not be instantly recognizable to many, there are few moments that pass in a day when we are not the beneficiaries in some way of the societal shifts he helped bring about. There are few men who one can truly say helped changed the world for the better. Walker, in own his quiet, eloquent, fearless way, was one of them.
Digging unearths forgotten family immigration story By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
A
s our country debates a change in immigration policy, the discussion prompted me to inquire about my family’s story, and how coming to America not only changed the life of my grandfather, but the generations of family that followed. I remember him as a small man, careful with words but always thoughtful and compassionate. As a child, I have fond memo-
ries of the feasts hosted by my grandfather, the big bowl of spiked eggnog at Christmas or the seafood buffets. I searched for more evidence regarding my grandfather who immigrated from Corsica and settled in Montgomery, Alabama. As a child, we heard stories about how Papa opened a lunch counter at a young age and stood on a soapbox to access the customers seated at the bar. Finally I discovered an obituary written by C.M. Stanley, a

Montgomery Advertiser reporter. It told a story that was much more complete than what I recalled from my childhood. Fred Louis Ridolphi was born in 1871 on the small island of Corsica, and at age 12 was sent to America by an overprotective mother who didn’t want her son drafted in the French Navy. He was met by James Vencentelli in New York, and traveled to Montgomery to join a small Corsican community in the city. After working at several res-
taurants in the commerce area of Montgomery, Papa acquired The Pickwick in 1905. The diminutive restaurateur had married my grandmother six years earlier and begun a family. What when purchased was a small lunch counter evolved into one of the South’s finest restaurants as the years passed, and Fred Ridolphi’s hospitality was well known throughout the South. Papa’s restaurant sat below the Clancy Hotel. The city’s Southern see Immigrants > 7

Letters to the Editor Community made Christmas Mother program a success story once again Dear Editor, The Goochland Christmas Mother program reached 729 county residents in 2017, and 267 families were given a happier Christmas thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers and support from the community. Of the 267 families supported, 111 were “adopted” to local organizations and families who provided for “their” families on behalf of the Christmas Mother. The involvement and support of adopting groups enables the Christmas Mother to better support families. This year saw a greater than 35 percent increase in families adopted over last year, enabling the organization to do more for its families. Adoptions are a vital part of the association’s ability to help so many in need. “It is a huge undertaking to match up so many of our families with those who want to provide for them in the name of the Christmas Mother,” said Cindie Valentine, GCM President. “Our adoptions chair, JoAnn Dabney, worked with a team of volunteers to match recipients with donors. The generous support from the community is so important to our helping so many in need.” From those who volunteered for shopping and wrapping, prepared boxes for delivery, collected canned goods and other donated items, to those who contributed monetarily, it was truly a community effort. One hundred volunteers turned out to shop for recipient gifts on Shopping Day, and over 100 came to make those gifts beautiful on Wrapping Day. Thirty bicycles and helmets were donated, as were meals for working volunsee Letters > page 7

Virginia State NAACP attends Lobby Day
On Jan. 16, the Virginia State Conference NAACP held its Annual Lobby Day at the Virginia General Assembly. Goochland Branch members and fellow representatives across the Commonwealth joined State President Rev. Kevin Chandler in lobbying delegates and senators on issues relevant to the NAACP. After attending a House of Delegates event honoring the late Civil Rights icon Nannie B. Harriston, the group closed their day with a press conference where they vowed to return on cross-over day to assess their efforts.
teers and so much more. The childrens bicycles are donated each year by the Richmond Area Bicycle Association. Goochland’s Christmas Mother program provides food, clothing, and other special gifts and support to meet the needs of each approved family. The work of hundreds of volunteers is required to organize donated and purchased food and supplies, shop for and wrap gifts and deliver the items to each family. Volunteers from county organizations such as the Goochland Rotary, the Goochland Woman’s Club, and the Goochland Sheriff’s Office support the effort along with many businesses, schools, families, and individuals. Volunteers are key to meeting the need, and it is a community effort that many enjoy participating in each year. A county resident is asked to serve as the Goochland Christmas Mother during the
year and are still coming in. To read more about the Goochland Christmas Mother and learn about volunteer opportunities, visit their web site at goochlandchristmasmother.org Sincerely, Anne Hardwick Goochland

our families took that step at a moment in history. Times change and I suppose immigration policy has to conform, but I would discourage anyone from changing the message America sends to the world – a beacon of hope and possibility. And, somewhere at this minute, there’s a person dreaming that dream and devising a way to achieve it, denying the obstacles and following that beacon. It’s a dream, for my family, that began in the mind of a small boy who crossed an enormous ocean and suffered the loneliness of a family left far behind. His determination is part of my heritage, but, more importantly, a strand of the fiber that makes this nation strong ... And the target of a dream by people like my grandfather, Fred Ridolphi.

The article states, “Pickwick waiters were in a class by themselves, with special distinction that accompanied them through life.” As I read on, I realized the attraction of discovering one’s past, or digging up a history little known, at least to me. Papa’s most important contributions also were listed in the article. He fathered 10 children, my father located somewhere in the middle of that batch, and raised his family with little indication of his humble beginnings. It’s only the story of one immigrant, a single snapshot of one unskilled dreamer who exited a steamship and began a path to achieve that dream. His story is our story, the tale of an American heritage that unites all in the single facts surrounding our origin – the fact that someone in most of

New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel was just a player in those days, and he and Papa became close friends and spent evenings discussing politics and baseball. The article listed a number of notables who dined at The Pickwick. Some of the names I recognized, but most I didn’t. Stage performer George C. Cohen, James Stewart and Al Jolson “always headed for the Pickwick when they reached town.” The article spoke of Papa and his relationship with his staff, a dedicated and lifelong group of waiters who my grandfather considered family and often visited his home.

Goochland’s Romeo Moreno won the James River District title on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Amelia High School in the 126-pound weight class. Moreno accomplished a 5-point move to win by a 9-8 decision over his opponent. It was part of a busy week of wrestling for the Bulldogs.
Moreno wins district title for Bulldogs wrestling By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It was a busy week for the Goochland Bulldogs wrestling team. First, on Jan. 23, Goochland participated in a tri-meet at Mills Godwin against the Eagles and Hermitage Panthers.
The match was a special one for Goochland wrestling coach Mike Nadder, as he is a Mills Godwin graduate and was the school’s first state champion in wrestling. “It was very special to return to Godwin,” he wrote in an email. “All of those coaches over there are friends of mine and they run such a
well-coached program and I wanted my kids to experience wrestling the larger schools like that and to see where we need to be as a team.” Hermitage and Godwin are both Class 5 schools, three classifications larger than Goochland. However, the Bulldogs held their own against the
Eagles and Panthers, with several of the wrestlers battling tough and pulling out wins. “All of the kids wrestled tough, but I was really impressed with Cody Nash, my 113-pounder, he won both of his matches by pin,” Nadder wrote. “Romeo Moreno, my 126 pounder,
had a really tough match against Godwin and although he lost 11 to 2, he was very much in the match until the end when his opponent picked up some extra points as Romeo was trying to hit some big moves.” Then, the Bulldogs hosted Armstrong and Cosby on Jan. 24 prior to participating in the
James River District tournament. “I feel like we performed really well considering the competition we were going against,” Nadder wrote. “We are a very inexperienced team, but the kids have shown a lot of improvement and are see Bulldogs> 10

Roundup: Bulldogs easily handle Dukes in 63-30 final By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
At Goochland High School on Jan. 26, Cumberland’s boys basketball team opened the game up with a 3-point shot for an early lead. Then the Goochland offense went to work and left the Dukes in the dust. Deion Harwood scored 19 points and was one of three Bulldogs players who scored in double-digits as the Bulldogs rolled on Cumberland 63-30. Quincy Snead added 13 points, while Isaiah Motavu scored 10. The teams were close throughout the first quarter until a 7-0 run near the end of the frame gave the Bulldogs a nine-point lead. Then, Goochland went on an 8-0 run to end the sec-

Cumberland tried to keep pace in the early stages of the third quarter, even going on a 6-0 run, but that only cut Goochland’s lead to 17 points. The Bulldogs answered with a monster 13-0 run that left no doubt as to the result of the game. After falling to RandolphHenry on Jan. 22, Goochland defeated Buckingham 47-31 on Jan. 23. Snead scored 14 points in that win.
The Bulldogs traveled to Cumberland on Jan. 26 and defeated the Dukes 33-21. Gonzalez scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in that win.

Goochland’s girls basketball team secured another win on Jan. 23, a 38-32 win over Buckingham. Lanaysia Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

the postseason comes. The kids will have not seen any better competition in the district or region than they have already seen.” That experience paid off at the James River District tournament, as Romeo Moreno was named district champion in the 126-pound weight class. Moreno won the match with a five-point move to win by a 9-8 decision. Maddie Muniz, Cody Nash and Jonathan Daly each were district runner-up, while Max Moreno, Corey Vincent, Daniel Thompson, Andrew Garcia and Jacob Massey were third-place finishers in the district. As a team, the Bulldogs finished second in the district behind Nottoway. Prior to the upcoming
regional tournament, the Bulldogs got some inspiration after one of their practices. On Jan. 26, Russell Rainer, a J.R. Tucker High School and University of Richmond alumni, spoke to the team. Rainer was a two-time NCAA Division I champion at UR, a two-time international world title holder and was a member of the US National Wrestling Team. Rainer was slated to go to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, but those were boycotted by the United States and Rainer missed his opportunity.
