s a long-time member of the fire and rescue community, Goochland Deputy EMS Chief Eddie Ferguson has always been aware of the dangers firefighters face every time they respond to a call. These days, however, he and other first responders are fast becoming aware that the greatest threat they face

After a four-month wait, Goochland County supervisors last week were presented with a tool they expect will significantly ease the process of determining the capital impact of future development projects. The county’s new Capital Impact Model, created by the consulting firm TischlerBise, is essentially a spreadsheet, explained Director of Community Development Jo Ann Hunter. When a developer brings a project forward for approval, planning staff will now be able to plug in the information provided and quickly get a picture of the project’s projected impact on areas such as public safety, schools and roads. Bill simplifies ID issue for vets By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Thanks to an effort by newly-elected Del. John McGuire (R-Henrico), Virginia’s veterans may soon have fewer cards to carry around. McGuire’s HB 737, which passed 99-0 in the House on

Feb. 5, will allow the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to issue drivers licenses with a special designation for veterans. The new license would mean veterans wouldn’t need an additional military ID. McGuire, himself a former Navy SEAL, said he wanted to introduce the legislation to

help make veterans’ lives just a little simpler. “It was a true team effort to get this done,” said McGuire, who said the issue was one he heard about from veterans over and over. The bill has now moved on to the Senate, and has been referred to the Committee on Transportation.

The Goochland Democratic Committee, in partnership with the Powhatan Democratic Committee, will sponsor a 7th District Democratic Candidate Forum at 7 p.m. today at the Goochland Recreational Center, located at 2415 Sandy Hook Road. The moderator will be Gene Rossi, and candidates will be Helen Alli, Diane Fraser, Abigail Spanberger and Dan Ward. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters continued from > 1 period, particularly digestive, oral, respiratory, and urinary cancers. There were also about twice as many fire fighters diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Ferguson himself knows several fellow firefighters who are currently battling cancer, and two who have died from the disease in the last year. Both were in their 40s. Last fall, Ferguson represented the Goochland Fire Department at the first Fire Service Occupational Cancer Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona. It was organized by the Fire Service Occupational Cancer Alliance. “It was truly educational and informative, and I’ve never seen a more engaged, attentive group of emergency responders at a symposium or conference,” said Ferguson. According to Goochland Fire and EMS Chief Bill MacKay, the increased risk firefighters face today is largely a function of changes to the products used in the construc-

tion of modern homes, as well as the products used by the people living in them. “There are so many things in your home now that are not just suspected carcinogens, they are known carcinogens” MacKay said. “When the many synthetic materials in the modern home burn, they create a toxic brew for first responders to contend with.” Fortunately, MacKay pointed out, Goochland’s fire department has already adopted numerous procedures and policies to help reduce the risk of cancer to its firefighters. Several stations now have washing machines for turnout gear, and firefighters also practice field decontamination, making sure to rid themselves of as much toxic material as possible before returning to the station. Special wipes are also used to clean contaminants off of faces and other exposed areas, which MacKay said is an important step in addressing head and neck cancers. In addition to a focus on decontaminating gear, the facilities firefighters use are getting more scrutiny as well: Fire station features like die-

sel exhaust extraction systems, such as the one installed in the county’s new Fire Station 6, are now known to play a key role in reducing the risks posed by diesel exhaust, also a known carcinogen. MacKay admitted that implementing the new safety procedures hasn’t always been a totally smooth process, particularly among long-time career firefighters for whom a char-covered helmet and sootstained turnout gear were considered badges of honor. “Like so many things that

Four decisions on rezonings have been deferred in recent months as county leaders waited for delivery of the new model and the study that accompanied it, which were created at a cost of around

$99,000. “Initially, I was not very happy about having to spend the money and all of the staff time, but we can now see the results and the much better view it gives us of the costs,” said Board of Supervisors chairman Ken Peterson. “It’s going to be a real benefit to the county going forward to have such a tool.”

Obituaries VIVIAN A. CAUDILL Vivian Allen Caudill, 97, of Richmond, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2018. She was born in Sevierville, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Sweden Cyrus Allen and Edith Webb Allen. Vivian is now reunited with her late husband, Paul Green Caudill, CAUDILL with whom she was married for 59 years; her precious daughter, Belinda Glidewell; and her beloved grandson, Jason Glidewell. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Caudill Perkins and her husband, James L. Perkins Jr.,

of Manakin-Sabot; and son-in-law, Greg Glidewell. She is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses, Troy Glidewell and his wife, Linda, Chad Glidewell, Melisa Glidewell, Todd Glidewell, James Paul Perkins and his wife, Katherine and Emily Perkins-Margolin and her husband, Moti. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list, but not forgotten. Mrs. Caudill was a charter member of Bon Air Baptist Church since 1955, and was an active member of their Sunday school program for over 60 years. She also proudly was founding member of The Bon Air Heights Garden Club since 1958. She worked full-time for 23 years, in addition to being a beloved wife and mother. In her lifetime, Vivian

was a treasured friend to all. Those who have taken her lessons to heart will continue to catch crabs off of the dock of the Corrotoman River, and meet yearly with family on the hill in Buckingham County with fried chicken and potato salad, and will be sure to keep the hydrangeas blooming from the summer through the fall. Her remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home. There will be an interment for family only in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The celebration of her life and services was held on Friday, Feb.9, at Bon Air Baptist Church on Buford Road, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts may be made to Bon Air Baptist Church or Virginia Garden Club, Piedmont district.

Goochland Rotary Club offering scholarship; deadline is April 15 Contributed report

The Rotary Club of Goochland has announced that it will award a one-time scholarship of at least $1,500 to a graduating senior who either attends Goochland High School or resides in Goochland County and who plans on attending a two- or four-year college or university. Applicants must complete the Rotary Club Scholarship Application which may be found on the Rotary Club of Goochland’s website at www. goochlandrotary.com under

the “Scholarship Application” tab. The required documents needed for the application to be considered include a copy of the student’s current transcript (unofficial is acceptable) and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a school faculty member. The second letter of recommendation must be from a non-family faculty member or community leader. Applications must be completed by April 15, 2018. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. The scholarship must

be used within two years of high school graduation, and dependents of Rotary Club of Goochland members are not eligible. K, I’ll admit it: There may have been some years in the past when the dates of the Winter Olympic Games were not circled in red on my calendar with the words “MUST WATCH!!” scrawled next to them in big, frantic handwriting. Like the rest of the television-owning, tabloid-headline-reading world, I did watch plenty of figure skating during the made-forTV duel on ice between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, and I’m pretty sure I checked in on the curling finals at least once just to see what the heck it was. Even so, I am ashamed to admit I haven’t given any of the other competitions much more than a cursory look in any of the recent games. This year, however, is going to be different. And it isn’t because I’ve suddenly stopped ignoring the fact that these men and women have devoted, in most cases, their entire young lives to making an Olympic team and yet I can’t pull my eyeballs away from

It’s been months since I’ve had a real smile on my face. Since I received news that my son Jack had broken his leg two days before Christmas, I’ve been consumed with concern and anticipation of an impending dose of reality. A broken leg for any kid is a serious event, and parents realize quickly that an immobile child is a whole new ball game when it comes to care. For a child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the results of a serious break are even more ominous. It’s part of a sad regression that robs its sufferers from their final steps, and a series of breaks usually preludes their transition to a wheelchair and marks an end to the little independence they enjoyed with their limited steps. For the past 12 months, I’ve tried to prepare Jack for the inevitable. The recent breaks, although normal in the process for MD sufferers, accelerated Jack’s quickly deteriorating condition. During his healing process, the prospects ofJack’s future mobility represented a scary elephant in the room and whether or not Jack woud regain any mobility after weeks of immobility and six weeks in a cast was an unknown. After two surgeries, it was a happy day when the cast finally came off, but the joy was quickly tempered with the sad reality of what might be regained. Througout the past weeks, I’ve found myself recalling what must seem like everyday moments to most parents. see Smile > page 7

Smile continued from > 6 I see the image of a father walking his child down a long hall to a classroom on the first day of school, or the struggled strides of a determined young boy around a baseball diamond laid out in the front yard. The steps were never easy, probably much harder than any of us realized at the time, but Jack didn’t complain and simply tried harder. All of those steps seem immensely important to me now, memories of better days when steps weren’t counted in single digits. It’s a long walk from my condo to my parking space, a straight and narrow sidewalk along a ridge — a walk I took hand-in-hand with Jack on too many occasions to count, or maybe not. I also recall the last time we took that walk, a real struggle for Jack that required several stops and a tenacious effort by my son to complete. He’s shown the same determination, that familiar tenacity, that drive and will and that same sense of dignity as he embarks on weeks of physical therapy. Years of dealing with a deadly disease have forced

So, as I get my DVR revved up and start praying for the U.S. mens bobsled team to grab the gold, I’m also going to make a concerted effort to appreciate the sports that don’t always grab the splashy headlines. Jack to approach life with a sense of realism that I suppose is a mechanism of necessity. But, early on in this process, Jack informed his doctors, physical therapists and his family that he would walk again. We all met his announcement with a healthy sense of hope and a realistic pinch of realism. Last week, Jack took 10 steps during his physical therapy visit. Now, I know that isn’t monumental, but it rates quite high on my list of hopes and dreams. We’re counting steps again and the number is going in the right direction. I’ll make sure each one is treated with the special recognition the effort behind it deserves. More importantly, Jack arrived home after his session and couldn’t wait to tell me of his accomplishment. “Dad, I took 10 steps at physical therapy today,” he said followed by a long silence when he just looked up at me and smiled. It was a smile I hadn’t seen on his face for months, a sure sign that Jack isn’t ready to surrender or hide from a relentless pursuer. He’ll be fighting for every step. And that brought a huge smile to my face.

County voices support for JROTC program The Goochland County administration has again expressed support for Goochland High School’s Marine Corps JROTC program, which school officials recently learned would lose federal funding this year. The cut, which equates to around $45,000, means a loss of the funds that now cover travel, training, uniforms, materials, equipment, and supplies for the roughly 100

students who participate in the program each year. County Administrator John Budesky said during the monthly supervisors meeting on Feb. 6 that the topic is one that he and board members have discussed several times. “[The school board], like us, sees the value of that program to our community and our students, and they have taken on a very active campaign,” Budesky said. “And we

have joined them in support of that campaign.” Budesky said the administration continues to send support letters to state officials in accordance with the school board’s request, and urged residents to do the same. Goochland’s JROTC program was founded in 2014, and is currently one of 35 programs across the country impacted by the funding cuts. — Roslyn Ryan

Goochland girls avenge loss, win district tourney title By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Goochland High School gymnasium was an intense place to be on Feb. 8. The Bulldogs girls basketball team was taking on Prince Edward in a game that would decide the regular season James River District title. Despite a roaring third quarter comeback from the Bulldogs, Goochland fell just short of the Eagles 51-46 to finish second in the district title race. “We played well,” Goochland coach James Harris said. “They did everything we wanted them to do. Just sometimes, it’s just how the ball bounces.” Prince Edward was able to leap ahead of the Bulldogs early in the first quarter thanks to two 3-point shots, which made it an 8-1 game. Despite the deficit, Goochland was able to whittle away at the Eagles lead, mainly thanks to its prowess at the free throw line. Prince Edward was already at its seventh foul with 31.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Goochland took advantage, for the most part, of their opportunities at the free throw line, going 13-for-22 in the first half alone. Prince Edward put the Bulldogs in the double bonus with 6:55 left in the half and Goochland scored nine points off those chances, including Lanaysia Gonzalez going fivefor-six from the line. “Free throws got us back in the game,” Harris said. “It’s the small things that brought us back.” The Eagles had built an

11-point lead mid-way through the quarter, but the foul shot success for Goochland narrowed that lead to just two points by the halftime buzzer. Goochland continued its march to the lead in the third quarter, when Gonzalez tied the game with the first bucket of the second half. Gonzalez scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. Then, Goochland’s Gabby Ragone hit back-to-back 3-point shots to give the Bulldogs a six-point lead. The first of those shots she hit was the first lead of the entire game for Goochland. However, Prince Edward was able to hang within striking distance of the Bulldogs, which set up an intense fourth quarter. The Eagles opened the fourth on a 7-0 run to take a four-point lead. That momentum allowed Prince Edward to stay just enough ahead of Goochland that the Bulldogs would need a big play to have a chance. Goochland senior Dorothy Clore attempted to create that big play when she was fouled on a layup and the ball went through the basket, but she missed the ensuing foul shot that would have trimmed the Prince Edward lead to just one point. The Eagles went on a 4-0 run prior to Blake Thomas missing the first of a one-andone chance, leaving two possible points on the table. Goochland was within four points with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, but had to foul and Prince Edward made one of their two foul shots to seal the win.

Harris said that the close loss showed how strong of a team the Bulldogs are. “We were disciplined and they can lock in,” he said. “I know we can go far.” But, the Bulldogs earned a revenge win on Feb. 12 against Prince Edward on the Eagles’ home court. After being down 33-16 at halftime, Goochland defeated Prince Edward 54-46 to win the James River District tournament. Next for the Bulldogs will be the Region 2B tournament.

The region tournament begins on Feb. 16, with the quarterfinals on Feb. 19, the semifinals on Feb. 21 and the finals on Feb. 23. The higher seed of the matchups will be host, while the times of the games were still to be determined at the time of printing this issue. in that win, while Carter added 10 rebounds. On Feb. 8, the Bulldogs defeated Prince Edward 58-37 to clinch the regular-season James River District title. Quincy Snead scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds against the Eagles, while Harwood had 14 points and seven rebounds. In the James River District semifinals on Feb. 10, the Bulldogs took down Cumberland 61-45. But, the win streak did not continue as the Bulldogs

fell to Randolph-Henry 73-55 in the district tournament final. Jordan Jones had 26 points and Nasheim Pettus had 21 points for the Statesmen. Harwood had 22 points for Goochland, while Kameron Holman had 10. Both Harwood and Snead were named first-team AllDistrict, while Carter was a second-team nod. The Bulldogs will host the winner of Nandua and Maggie Walker on Feb. 19 in the Region 2B tournament.

Goochland AD Gordon to retire at end of school year By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

It hasn’t sunk in yet. That’s the approach being taken by Director of Student Activities Bryan Gordon as he embarks on his last semester in Goochland schools. It’s almost a lifetime relationship that began when Gordon attended county schools, played quarterback on the Bulldog football team and met his wife and began a family. With the exception of a four-year hiatus when Gordon attended Randolph-Macon College where he made his mark as a four-year starting defensive end, the administrator has spent most of his life in or around Goochland schools. Gordon, 66, announced his pending retirement last month and this spring, he will wrap up a 30-plus year career that took him from the classroom, to the sideline and finally the administrative office. He’s still busy performing the myriad of tasks that has become his signature, a desire to put in the hours to get the job done; but, as the days count down, strolls down the halls of GHS could be better described as a walk down memory lane. Those recollections might recall a young coach who began teaching algebra at the old middle school, then known as junior high. It could include those early years as an assistant baseball coach, where he learned to motivate and inspire. Or it could involve the special recollection of coaching his two sons, an experience he’ll treasure.

He might even remember his first year as Bulldog head coach when his team handed him a 1-9 record, a tally he reversed in the following year. It might include memories of a major league pitcher in the form of Justin Verlander who brought the heat as a freshman for Gordon’s varsity baseball team. Taking a few minutes in between duties as he oversaw two home basketball games last week, a normal night for Gordon, the coach didn’t hesitate when asked what he’ll remember and miss most about those three decades. “I’m just lucky to have been fortunate enough to be around the students at Goochland High School and the athletic teams we’ve built here,” Gordon said. It all began not far from where this chapter in Gordon’s life is ending, educating and coaching Goochland County’s students. He met his wife Diana at GHS and watched his two sons play sports on the same fields where he served as coach. After graduating from R-MC, Gordon returned home and took a job with GCPS. Following two years of teaching and coaching at the middle school, Gordon moved to the high school as head football coach. His 1976 Bulldogs compiled a 1-9 record. “I figured we could only go up from there,” he said, laughing. “We came back with the same group of players and finished 9-1-1 the following year. I guess they got used to me and my system.” He left the school system

in 1981 to take a job with Ragland Wood Products and eventually became manager at Luck Stone Center. His current stint back in Goochland schools began in 1993 when he returned as Activities Director. “I like coaching and missed it,” he said. “I got right back in to it after 13 years and began as an assistant coach on the football team and head coaching the baseball team.” Even during his absence, Gordon was involved with Goochland schools as a member of the School Board from 1990 to 1993. He credits that experience with providing a better understanding of both sides of the education system, administrative and legislative. “Having been a teacher I could relate to teacher needs and thoughts so it was a good experience,” he said. Over the years, Gordon has seen many changes but said things mostly have stayed the same. “The kids are a little different, but basically the same,” he said. After moving to the new high school in 2001, Goochland’s sports teams continued to excel, and as Gordon prepares to leave, the school boasts state titles in almost every sport in which they competed. In his last year as baseball head coach, the team won the state championship in 2006. “That was the last game I coached,” he said. The following fall, the football team won a state title with Gordon running the offense. The coach hasn’t given much thought to retirement but said more time with his three grandchildren with one more on the way and traveling

with wife Diana are priorities. He also plans to eventually take a part time job, maybe something that involves a golf course. He’s confident GHS athletics will continue to excel. “We have a great coaching staff and great students. We’re very fortunate to have such exceptional people.” Students around the campus will have a Coach Gordon to go to for advice as sons Patrick and Preston currently serve as GHS coaches, but most around the school will tell you the senior Gordon is irreplaceable. Current head football coach Joe Fowler is just one of the many who have benefited from Gordon’s guidance and association. “I know that I would not be here were it not for the guidance and mentorship that Bryan has shown me over the

years,” Fowler said last week. “I really can’t even begin to put it into words. I believe that the measure of a person’s life is the positive impact that one has on others. Bryan has played a part in so many peoples lives that his impact will continue for generations to come.” Fowler said the proof is in the pudding when considering Gordon’s tenure. “I think it is a testament to Bryan that in his years as athletic director we have had girls basketball, baseball, softball, boys tennis, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, volleyball, and football all finish in the top four in the state at some point during his tenure. That is the definition of a complete and well rounded athletic program,” Fowler said. The more things change, the more they stay the same,

but there’s no doubt it won’t be the same when the doors at GHS swing open next fall, and a new group of students will not have the benefit of Gordon’s experience and wisdom. But his message will endure in the hearts of souls of the students who played for, or took Algebra from, or just needed help with a problem, a legion too numerous to count. “There are a lot of folks in the world who are better people because Bryan Gordon had a part in their lives whether it was as a coach, teacher, or athletic director,” Fowler said. Asked how he accomplished so much in a little over three short decades, Gordon explained, “I tried to lead by example.” Most of the people who know him would tell you he succeeded.
