Pinwheels for prevention
In honor of the national effort to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect during the month of April, members of the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club once again planted a sparkling “garden” of blue pinwheels. This year, the display is located in front of the county library on River Road. Club members who planted this year are, from left, Anne Hardwick, Nancy Conkright and Rachel Parker. Dianne Pollock also helped.

At just about 60,000 square feet, Goochland’s recently renovated Central High School Complex boasts a sizable footprint. Lately, however, Goochland Deputy County Administrator Derek Stamey prefers to focus on the smaller details. Two weeks ago, as Stamey walked through the freshly painted hallways of the building that served as a high school for black students during the era of school segregation, he explained that those tasked with renovating the space had worked hard to honor its past. “The details are everywhere, and I think staff did an amazing job,” Stamey said. “This is [the former students’] building, and we wanted to bring it back to life in a way that they could be proud of.” Not only were originally materials repurposed where they could be, but a number of things once used in the school — right down to the classroom chalkboards — are now being put to use again. Great care was also taken to highlight the hissee Central > 3

Quentin Brooking, a family friend who created the account, said that the money will be used to help pay hospital bills and to help provide for Nuckolls’ son, 6, and daughter, 14. According to Nuckolls’ mother, Sandra Duke, the young woman had already experienced more than her
share of tragedy by the time she passed away on March 18, having endured the death of her husband from a heart condition, then the loss of her son’s father in a motorcycle accident. Her father died several years ago as well. Through it all, Duke said, Nuckolls continued to pursue her education and work hard to make a good life for her children. “She was just an incredible person,” said Duke. “We’re just going to miss her so much.”

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County by all ages was a major goal. Now, she said, the vision the group had for the school has been realized. “It looks wonderful,” she said. “And it brings back a lot of memories.” Calvin Hopkins, who graduated from Central High School in 1965 and also served on the committee, said the results more than met expectations. “I think it is just outstanding,” said Hopkins, praising the leadership of Rebecca Dickson, the late county administrator who was instrumental in helping find a way to save the building, as well as Stamey and the entire

staff of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department. “I think everyone on the committee is just elated about the way it was done.” While details and historical preservation were important, the renovation crew also knew that there were some areas of the building in which they would need to be far less merciful. To that end, walls were ripped out and dropceilings pulled down. Flooring in what had served as a teacher’s lounge at one point was pulled up to reveal beautiful wood floors that now serve as a stage in the auditorium. It wasn’t always an easy process, Stamey admitted, but

he insisted the staff was never daunted. “I don’t think anything is impossible when you have great support,” he said. “I think this was more of an opportunity than anything.” *** Goochland County will be hosting an Open House at the newly renovated Central High School Complex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 7. Though it was most recently used as a middle school until 2007, and sporadically by the county after that, the building had fallen into disrepair by 2014, when county leadership began considering whether to renovate, sell, or simply demolish the structure. Thanks to the many residents who rallied to help save the school, the option of tearing it down was soon off the table, replaced by a step-bystep plan to bring the building back to life.
Now, new landscaping highlights the front of the building, as well as a new flag pole. Inside, a spacious, wellappointed auditorium waits for groups who may wish to rent it out, and rooms that once served as classrooms now welcome local seniors who take part in programs such as yoga and painting. Goochland Parks and Recreation Manager Jessica Kronberg ensured that new furnishings harkened back to an earlier time, and even found a way to display an original set of blueprints. Perhaps the most striking aspects of the renovation are the many acknowledgments of the students who once spent their days in Central High
School’s classrooms and on its athletic fields. On an interior wall near the front entrance is a timeline of the school’s history, and a reclaimed desk sits in the corner of what will eventually serve as a museum dedicated to the school. One thing visitors are sure to enjoy is the touch screen display that allows anyone to digitally “page through” a collection of Central High School yearbooks, complete with the messages from students inscribed in the pages. Terrible advice for high school seniors By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Dear High School Senior, As you approach the end of your high school years, many of you are likely finalizing the next steps you will take on the path to a fully independent and satisfying adult life. And, for a good number of you, that means deciding where you will go to college. You are probably well aware that choosing a college is no laughing matter. You must pick exactly the right college for you, one that fits you perfectly and will provide you with the kind of collegiate experience you have always pictured in your head (or seen on the front of every single college brochure).
The consequences should you fail to do this could be dire, up to and including: Temporary confusion Being forced to adjust to circumstances for which you are not totally prepared Accepting the realization that sometimes what you didn’t expect turns out to be exactly what you needed *** Dear High School Senior, Once you have selected your perfect college, it will soon be time to choose the one subject that you will totally and completely devote yourself to for the next four years: your major. Please be advised, you
must make this decision quickly, and you must get it right the first time. Dillydallying, or accidentally picking the wrong major could lead to: Having to admit you might have messed up Learning to start over Inadvertently discovering something that you truly love and are passionate about *** Dear High School Senior, Choosing a school and major are important, but eventually you will have to make an even bigger pick: your career! This is that one thing that you will do from the time you leave college to the day
you retire, so you better be sure to nail it the first time out. The world can be scary and unpredictable, so choose a conventional career path with minimal risk (save the “creative stuff” for a hobby). Sure, you could try your hand at several different things over the course of the next 40-plus years, but studies have shown that having more than one career can be directly linked to: Improved happiness and personal satisfaction Self discovery and growth The realization that you control your own destiny and that life — and time — are far too precious to waste, and that you should do, see, listen, feel, love, and learn as much as you can, in whatever way you can, until you run out of both.
When it comes to equality, how far have we come? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
As we prepare to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a personal inventory of our personal and public race relations. Where exactly do we stand when it comes to racial harmony, and how far have we come? More importantly, it’s a chance to evaluate just how far we have to go as a nation when it
comes to equality and fairness. As a child, I grew up in a city where racial lines were clearly drawn, and there was a separate but unequal status quo that seemed impenetrable. In the early 1950s, that mood changed in Montgomery, Alabama, and the city became a focal point for racial inequities. The driving force behind that movement was a young minister named Martin Luther King Jr., who called for change from his Dexter Avenue pulpit. Even with the frequent marches

on weekends, and limited boycotts, life went on in Montgomery and the strife of the day had little influence on our daily lives. On some Saturdays, we gathered as a group of curious children and made the short trek to downtown Montgomery and stood on Dexter Avenue as the protest marches continued. An occasional firecracker would interrupt the unified voices of the protest, but the mood was largely non-confrontational and forgiving.
I took special note of the nuns and priests who marched with the protesters signaling their solidarity in the fight. “Wow, there are nuns from church in the march,” I quietly exclaimed to my cousin. An angry man standing directly behind us made a hasty and stern reply as he looked directly in my eyes. “Those aren’t real nuns. They are protesters dressed up like nuns,” the see Equality > 7

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.
Calvin Hopkins Early on my parents taught me to “always be willing to help others and expect nothing in return, a thank you is sufficient.” This advice, coupled with a solid educational foundation I received from Second Union School, molded me to live a life rooted in goodwill. Compassion, respect, and thoughtfulness are all qualities that were instilled into me in a way that “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” became second nature. As a child I’d see my neighbors help each other, so when I retired from the United States Air Force in 1987 I carried on the spirit of goodwill by serving on many county boards, committees, agencies, and beyond. Naturally, I’d like to see more citizen involvement mobilized in civic organizations, county school system and businesses. That’s why I think the new motto for Goochland Family Service, “Goochland Cares” is a great blueprint. Personally, I like to expand upon that motto and say, “Goochlanders Care” because there is always something one can do to make a positive impact. I never hesitate to extend a helping hand, but I faithfully believe my blessings come from helping others.

Equality continued from >6 man said in an agitated voice. For years, I never questioned his assertions, but the statement always remained in my mind as I watched other protests in other venues over the years. As I listen to my children, I realize that time, indeed, is the great equalizer, and the years between today and those Saturdays in Montgomery have erased or hidden much of the hatefulness … but not all. It’s reassuring when I hear my children speak of their classmates, never reverting to racial descriptions or stereotypes to describe their classmates. Their evolving minds are absent the misguided stereotypes I grew up with as a child, and watched personified by adults for most of my life. It’s a wonderful evolution

Different is not a negative concept to them, and discrimination is something they don’t know exists in America. Sadly, not everyone got the memo, and the advances of Civil Rights and equality for all Americans still evokes hostility and resentment in some minds. Even more devastating is the way these hatreds are passed down through generations, a learned behavior that perpetuates of atmosphere of inequality and racial tension. And while many consider that racism in America was a problem long ago solved, the simple reality is that equality in America still has a long way to go. For years, I’ve heard folks from my generation justify their racism by claiming they are victims of a generational

Some minds won’t be changed, but equality is a vision that has no beginning or end and represents a battle that is ongoing in our nation. And, one day, that vision of equal rights for all Americans will be a reality, and the ignorance of racism and bigotry will only survive in the minds of a few. But, the mission of racial harmony is an ongoing assignment that requires constant vigilance to prevent situations like the ones many of us witnessed in the all too recent past. Unrest on American streets reminds us all there is still work to be done. For many Americans, real racial harmony and equality can’t come fast enough. Benedictine’s Holden Fiedler (right) completes his trot around the bases after hitting a two-run home run against Midlothian in the opening game of the Deep Run Spring Break Classic on Monday, April 2, at Deep Run High School. Fiedler came in to pitch in the fifth inning in relief and allowed just one run and struck out four batters.
Fiedler’s home run wins it for Benedictine By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Benedictine’s Holden Fiedler strode to the plate in the top of the eighth inning against Midlothian on Monday, April 2, with the goahead run standing on second base. Fiedler’s job was to get that run across the plate by whatever means necessary.
He took a rather direct approach. Fiedler launched an offering from Trojans pitcher Reed Boettner over the left field fence for a two-run blast that lifted the Cadets to a 5-3 win over Midlothian in the opening game of the Deep Run Spring Break Classic at Deep Run High School. “It was one of those situations where I knew the wind
was blowing in and I knew I just had to put a good swing on it,” Fiedler said. “I wanted to see a fastball early and hit a line drive since we had a guy on second already. I just felt like it was a good swing and I did my job.” Benedictine struck first in the top of the third inning when Jack Carpin ripped a double to the outfield, which scored Jack Hall and made it
a 1-0 game. The Cadets added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Jaymarie Fleming opened the inning with a double and was moved to third by a sacrifice bunt from Patrick White. Two batters later, Greg Ryan hit a chopper right back to Midlothian pitcher Bryce Blackburn, which went off his glove and allowed Fleming to score to make it 2-0 Cadets.
The Trojans answered in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out walk to Tyler Moore turned into a run after Logan Smith doubled Moore home to make it a 2-1 game. Benedictine extended it back to a two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. Carpin opened the inning with a single, followed by a double from Josh Brown that scored Carpin to make it 3-1.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Midlothian’s offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth. Boettner led the inning off with a single, with Christian Chambers working a two-out walk three batters later. Baylor Cumbea singled to load the bases. That’s when Fielder came see Cadets>9

Roundup: Bulldogs tennis takes down Eagles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s girls tennis team was down their No.1 singles player, Peyton Nadder, who was sick and unavailable for the March 29 match against Prince Edward. But, the Bulldogs rallied and defeated the Eagles 7-2. “I had to adjust the lineup,” girls tennis coach Teresa Hood wrote in an email. “Anytime that has to be done, it can be a concern. But, all of the girls who played stepped up and performed really well.” In singles, Goochland’s Alexis Wiggins defeated Emma Watson 8-1, Lauren Heffinger defeated Katrina Carrea 8-0, Meghan Wright took down Eboni Green 8-3, Berkeley Winston defeated Abbigail Moore 8-6 and Rebekah Wright beat Maria Carrea 8-3. Grace Rust got the best of Autumn Baker 8-5, which was a match that Hood wrote was very hard fought. Overall, the Bulldogs are 2-1 this season. Goochland took down Essex 8-1 on March 22 and fell 8-1 to
Cadets continued from >8 into the game in relief of starter Mark Loving. Fielder issued a walk to Dylan Carson and hit Moore in the arm, which scored both the Trojans runs to tie the game. But, he was able to get Logan Smith to ground out to first base to end the Trojans threat, which would be their best one of the game.
Manchester on March 16. Hood wrote that she’s very excited for the team this year. “My number one, three, four and six players all played on the team last year,” she wrote. “So, having that many with match experience is a huge bonus. I think we’ll have a very good year in the conference.” Nadder, Wiggins and Baker form a strong one through three standing for the Bulldogs, Hood wrote. Wiggins is a first-year player on the team and has “established herself in the starting lineup,” according to Hood. Meghan Wright, another senior, is in her first year on the team as well and plays in the number five spot. Nadder is in her third season playing for the Bulldogs and Baker is in her second season. Lauren Heffinger in the number four slot has been another nice addition to the lineup. “She joined the team last year as a freshman, having never played the game,” Hood wrote. “She caught on quickly and earned a spot on the starting roster with her
determined effort. I think she’ll have a quiet, but good season.” Last season, the Bulldogs fell in the conference final to Randolph-Henry. Hood wrote that she hopes to come away with the district crown this season. “I’d like to win the (district) and make it to regionals,” she wrote. “With the addition of Alexis Wiggins and Meghan Wright, I think we have a good chance.”
“I thought I would be coming into the game from the dugout, but I ended up coming in from catching, which was different,” Fiedler said. “But,” he added, “I worked through it. I would have liked to have not given up any runs, but we got them back.” In the top of the sixth and seventh, the Cadets were able to get runners on base, but couldn’t get any runs home. The best chance was in the top of the sixth when
they loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended that opportunity. Fiedler was efficient on the mound against the Trojans, sitting the Midlothian batters down in order in the sixth and seventh to send the game to extra innings. In the eighth, Hall reached base with a double and Fiedler followed up with the two-run home run. “Holden has been swinging the bat and driving the baseball as well as any of our
BOYS SOCCER Goochland’s boys soccer team defeated Cumberland 9-0 on March 26. Zach Gordon and Nick Lowery both recorded hat tricks for the Bulldogs. Matthew Lewis and Jack Golightly also scored goals. An own goal committed by Cumberland also was on the score sheet. The Bulldogs recorded another 9-0 win on March 28, this one over Bluestone. Gordon and Lowery also recorded hat tricks in that win, with Hunter Wilms, Lewis and Jacob Hayward scoring as well.

guys,” Cadets coach Sean Ryan said. “He’s hit the ball well and hard, but sometimes just right at people. His power zone is typically toward the right-center gap, but he’s been working hard to catch that inside pitch and drive it down the left field line. We desperately needed (the home run) since we hadn’t done much offensively for three or four innings.” On the mound, Fiedler shut the Trojans down in short order, with a fly out
to right, a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop. While Benedictine was able to get the big hit when they needed it, the Cadets offense left the bases loaded on two separate occasions in the game. “Both teams did,” Ryan said. “A couple things happen at that point. Sometimes, you’re just snake-bit. Sometimes, the pitchers make better quality pitches. I think both those things happened today.”
“We needed to have some better at-bats with runners in scoring position and that’s magnified late in the game when you can’t get that big hit. It’s also important when you can’t extend a lead in the second or third inning. So, we can do a better job of having better quality at-bats,” he added. Benedictine faced LeeDavis in the second round of the tournament on April 3 and completed the tournament on Wednesday, April 4.
