BOS honors child abuse prevention advocates
Prescription ‘take back’ day will be held April 28 Contributed report
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
On Tuesday, April 3, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation recognizing April 2018 as Child Abuse Prevention Month. According to the proclamation read by Goochland Board of Supervisors Chairman Ken Peterson, the majority of child abuse cases stem from situations and conditions that are preventable in an engaged and supportive community. It went on to note that effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of the partnerships created among families, social service agencies, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community. On hand to represent those working on behalf of child abuse prevention in Goochland were Mills Jones from the Goochland County Office of Children’s Services; Ann Casey from Goochland CASA; see Prevention > 2

In addition to reading books with their children and playing with simple toys like blocks—as demonstrated by Goochland kindergartner Hudson, above—local families of soon-to-be kindergartners are being urged to attend an upcoming registration event on Thursday, April 19. The program is intended to help make sure children are well prepared to start school in the fall. For more information, see page 2.
On April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 15th opportunity in eight years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Those who would like to take advantage of this program are asked to bring pills for disposal to Co. 5 Fire/ Rescue at 2710 Fairground Road, or West Creek Emergency Center at 12720 Tuckahoe Creek Parkway in Henrico. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions will be asked. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs, or about the April 28 Take Back Day event, visit the DEA Diversion website at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/ index.html, or contact the Goochland Sheriff’s Office at (804) 556-5349.

All in the family For one Goochland salon owner, haircuts have led to lasting relationships By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Even if it’s your first visit — and even if you’ve just popped in for a quick trim — don’t be surprised if you leave Shear Wildness Salon and Spa feeling like you’ve been welcomed into a new family. After all, says salon owner Debbie Wilds, that’s just how it should be. To Wilds, who has been cutting hair in Goochland for nearly 40 years, the idea of family has always been at the heart of her business, whether it’s working alongside her daughter Kendall or welcoming other young stylists into the fold. Of course, you don’t need to be related to Wilds — or even work for her — to feel like the
bright, airy space at 2921 River Road is something of a second home. “I love the interaction we get to have here,” said Wilds, who likes to joke that a visit to the salon is often less expensive — but just as therapeutic — as a trip to the psychiatrist. “Everybody knows everybody and if you don’t we make sure that you do.” While Wilds’ sunny, exuberant personality has certainly drawn hundreds of clients to her salon over the years, it’s her skill set that has kept them coming back. “You never go away with a bad haircut,” said Minnie Smith several weeks ago, relaxing as Wilds expertly snipped and shaped her hair. “Once she cuts your hair one time, she knows exactly how you like it.” The stylists of Shear Wildness certainly appear to be having fun as they go about their work, joking with clients and chatting about the latest Goochland news. That isn’t to say, however, that it’s all play and no work. “We all hustle,” said Kendall, a mother of see Salon > 12

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Coming to the rescue often takes a toll By Roslyn Ryan Editor
By the looks of things, it had been a long night. In fact, anyone catching a glimpse of the three weary young men grabbing an early morning bite to eat at a local convenience store last Wednesday might have been forgiven for thinking that they were three college-age guys wrapping up a particularly wild evening. It was only when I happened to notice the emblem they had on their sweatshirts that the real story began to emerge. All three, it turned out, were coming off of a long night spent on call for a local rescue
squad — a busy night, they shared, and one that had allowed for only a few hours of sleep. The three were exceedingly polite, and certainly weren’t complaining. But it was easy to see that the prior evening had taken the expected toll. For the rest of the day, as I went about my usual daily tasks, I couldn’t help but think back on the three young gentlemen and consider how my typical work day compares to theirs. I thought about the work-related things I tend to get stressed out about — deadlines, scheduling conflicts, technology headaches — and then considered what they face
on a daily basis. I also thought about the few times I have had to call for emergency help, how calm and professional the responders have been, and the compassion and patience they have shown. I remembered being in an accident at 16 in which a car I was in rolled over (neither myself nor the driver was seriously hurt), and how the paramedics didn’t seem much older than I was. I thought about the times first responders have made headlines — the firefighters who rushed into the towers on Sept. 11, 2001 — and the thousands of times a day they do their jobs with little to no fanfare
at all. I thought about the terrible things they see, and the things they can’t forget. And I thought about how so many of them aren’t even paid to do what they do, and instead volunteer their time to help keep the rest of us safe. Last Wednesday morning, as the three men wrapped up a night that had undoubtedly required them to be patient, capable, empathetic, quick-witted, and professional, and to do it all often under intense pressure, it was clear to see that they were, in fact, mortal. Forgive me, however, dear readers, if they still seem like superheroes to me.
Area’s recent restaurant boom started quietly By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I recently read that Richmond has one of the most robust restaurant scenes in the entire nation featuring a variety of dining and entertainment choices, fine locally brewed beers and unique culinary experiences in all corners of the city. I’m not sure when the eatery explosion began, but I do recall days past when picking a restaurant was more limited than the potpourri of experiences offered today. The evolution of the abundant
restaurant base that currently serves the metro area was more of a transformation than a reformation. A major part of that awakening occurred when a historic area of Richmond called Shockoe Slip became a gathering spot for recently come of age baby boomers looking to fully take advantage of recently passed liquor by the drink laws. Even with the small conglomerate of local restaurants in the mid to later 1970s, the Slip was gentle and quiet compared to the hustle and bustle that marks the night on Cary Street on any given night today.

Back then, the two blocks that comprised the slip were still a combination of abandoned buildings and crumbling tobacco warehouses, with intermittent renovated spaces mostly occupied by restaurants. Eateries like Galligo’s, The Warehouse and Sam Millier’s dotted the dimly lit street, and getting to each of them was easy with only the passing of a lone car on Cary Street separating the trek. I’m not sure what attracted me or my friends to the area, but I can recall many a late night spent in an exposed brick basement that served
as the bar for the situated above Sam Miller’s. The Slip had an atmosphere I hadn’t experienced in Richmond, sort of reminiscent of Georgetown in its pre-chic days. On those hot summer evenings, the sounds of George Benson trickled out from the basement at Sam Millers, while full tilt rock and roll slid through the open doors of Tortilla Flats. For months, it seemed as though we had found an undiscovered treasee Restaurants > 7

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.
Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield The best piece of advice I was ever given came from both my mother and my father, and years later from my sister-in-law. The advice w was that I sshould do w what I felt was right without worrying ab about what oth other people wou would say. During my early years, I felt this meant I should befriend unpopular classmates. “How would you feel if you were treated that way?” It also meant sticking up for substitute teachers: “No, I’m not going to dive under my seat when you yell, ‘Air Raid!’ That’s mean.” Years later, Hanover County planned to take by eminent domain land belonging to my son and me in order to build a sewage outfall and discharge treated effluent into the Pamunkey River. My most obvious protest was lining Highway 360 with toilets. It took Hanover eight years to beat us. In March of 2012, when McDonnell was Governor, I was one of more than 1,000 protesters who gathered on Capitol Square to protest a bill requiring a woman to have a transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion. We considered this bill a symbol of our overall desire and need for basic rights for women. A State Police SWAT Team in riot gear was called, and 32 protesters were arrested. After that event, my sisterin-law, Sheila Bailey, gave me a framed copy of words of Eleanor Roosevelt: “Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you’ll be criticized anyway.”

It didn’t take long for the good times to extend to

Shockoe Bottom and beyond, and a place that seemed as familiar as an old shoe became a showplace for entertainment and night life . . . and those cool evenings sitting around the fountain in a deserted cobblestoned circle are now just a memory. Now, it’s been years since I’ve visited that site of some of my adolescent indiscretions, but it’s no secret there are more bars and restaurants in that area to satisfy the most sophisticated of tastes. A recent internet search listed the top 30 bars in the area, a far cry from those first three or four establishments that ventured into an unknown part
of the city and took a chance that customers would appreciate the history and ambiance of the area. It worked. Like I said, I’m not sure where the process began that has resulted in the multitude of unique eateries in the city and its surrounding counties, but I’m convinced some of it began along those aged cobblestones on a strip of Cary Street called Shockoe Slip. And I’ve certainly enjoyed the benefits of living in a city with an endless variety of places to eat, drink and party but never with the ease and sense of belonging that Shockoe Slip offered in those early days of its rejuvenation.

Benedictine’s Jamari Baylor prepares to make contact with a pitch against St. Christopher’s on April 4 at Deep Run High School. Baylor was 2 for 4 with a double, triple, 2 RBIs and three runs scored in the 11-5 win over the Saints. Baylor provided a spark from the leadoff spot for the Cadets.
Cadets power past Saints for tourney title By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Prior to the Benedictine and St. Christopher’s game at Deep Run High School on April 4 that would decide the champion of the Deep Run Spring Break Tournament, the host Wildcats and Midlothian were battling it out for third place. The Trojans and Wildcats
scored a combined 26 runs, including a total of 10 runs between the two teams in the second inning, and racked up 20 hits. The Cadets and Saints must have seen that game as something to emulate as both offenses came out on fire on the cold night in Henrico, scoring seven combined runs in the first inning alone. But, Benedictine’s offense
continued to carry its spark, while the Saints cooled off thanks to strong relief pitching from the Cadets, leading to an 11-5 win for Benedictine. “The first inning was crazy,” Cadets head coach Sean Ryan said. “We had a crazy game against (St. Christopher’s) last year here and we started thinking it would turn into another slug-
fest like before. But, I was proud with how we responded after the first inning.” In the first, the Cadets raced out to a quick 3-0 lead. Jamari Baylor reached on an error, followed by a walk by Josh Brown. Jack Hall had an RBI double and Holden Fiedler, who was named MVP of the tournament, had an RBI single in the inning. While Fiedler was able to
make some noise with the bat against the Saints pitching, St. Christopher’s brought the noise right back with Fielder on the mound in the bottom of the first. Two consecutive walks opened the inning before Patrick Routsis knocked in a run with a single. Donovan Murphy reached on an error before Hunter Andrews knocked in two runs
with a double to tie the game at 3-3. Then, Griffin O’Ferrill gave the Saints their only lead of the game with an RBI single. But, after a pitching change to Bennett Lloyd, Benedictine was able to escape the inning without any further damage. “We wanted to get see Cadets>9

Roundup: Bulldogs soccer takes down Statesmen By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s boys soccer team showed no signs of rust in the first game back after the weeklong break. The Bulldogs moved and scored at will against Randolph-Henry in an 8-0 win on April 9 at Goochland High School. “We’re looking pretty good, but today’s game was not as good as I would have wanted to play,” Bulldogs head coach Jaime Lopez said. “But, they’re learning how to play together and be creative together. They really enjoy playing together,” he added. “Today, we got away from that a little bit. But, we’re trying to get creative and play better. That’s our key,” Lopez said. Getting into that creative mindset that Lopez wants has been difficult this season, as field and playing time has been severely hampered by the weather and resulting postponements so far this season. “For that, we need to play
Cadets continued from >8 through an inning or two (with Fiedler), but they were all over him,” Ryan said. “So, we had to go to our bullpen a little quicker than we wanted to. I thought Bennett Lloyd threw very well and Jay Woolfolk was tremendous as the game went on.” Fielder switched from pitcher to catcher and said he had to quickly get past his rough outing and focus on the task at hand.
together more often so we can create those bonds together,” Lopez said. “But, that’s the plan going forward and hopefully we can do that toward the end,” he said. Zach Gordon led the team with two goals, while Kyle Vincent, Hunter Willms, Jack Golightly, Preston Doersch, Nick Lowery and Matthew Lewis each scored one goal. Lopez said that Gordon has been a standout player for the team thus far this season. “He’s definitely taken control as a captain and taken control on the field,” he said. “He’s been creative and been scoring goals. I think he’ll have a good season ahead of him.” Goochland is off to a 3-0 start to the year and have outscored their opponents 25-0. On April 11, Goochland hit the road to Prince Edward in a game that Lopez said would be a good test for his team. “That’s going to be a little taste of a little more challenge,” he said. “(RandolphHenry) gave us a run for our money as well.”
After the faceoff with the Eagles, the Bulldogs will host Amelia on Monday, April 16, and Central Lunenburg on Thursday, April 19, before a home-and-home series with Nottoway on Monday, April 23, at Nottoway and on Thursday, April 26, back in Goochland. Lopez said that he hopes the team will continue to work together as one as they get more on-field time throughout the season. “We’re still learning how to play as a full team,” he said. “That’s what I want to see.”
“It’s always hard to shake off negative things,” he said. “Baseball is a game of failure. So, I had to just focus on what I could do to affect the game positively. I pitched 48 pitches on Monday and came back on short rest. I just didn’t have it and some days, you just don’t have it.” The next two complete innings were quiet until Benedictine’s offense roared back to the life in the fourth. Casey Green reached base on a double, followed by Baylor knocking him in with
a double of his own. Baylor scored on a fielder’s choice later in the inning to make it a 6-4 game. Greg Ryan and Hall would also score in the fourth to make it an 8-4 lead for the Cadets. In the fifth inning, the combination of Green, Baylor and Brown struck again. Green reached with a double and scored on a triple by Baylor. Brown followed with another triple to score Baylor before Ryan brought Brown and himself home with a

You’re getting a lot of opportunities to see live pitching. That probably played a factor (in the offensive outburst.) The more you play, you get into a rhythm.” Baylor has played a key role in the Cadets lineup, hitting leadoff with Callaway Sigler sidelined with a hamstring injury.
“(Baylor) had a tremendous tournament defensively,” Ryan said. “He’s given us a much-needed leadoff man. It’s been nice to have Jamari jumpstart our offense. You see some of the things he can do. He can run the bases really well. Our first run largely came because he was moving. He has great awareness on the base paths. It’s great to jumpstart your offense with someone like that.” In relief, Woolfolk ended the fifth inning with two consecutive strikeouts, and then
sat the next three Saints down in order in the sixth the same way. “When he’s pitched this year, he’s been tremendous,” Ryan said. St. Christopher’s would score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to mount any more of a comeback. The win propelled Benedictine to champions of the tournament at Deep Run, as well as a 12-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 poll.
