When it comes to supporting Goochland County Schools, Goochland Education Foundation (GEF) members take their mission very seriously. But that doesn’t mean they can’t still have a little fun now and then. This Saturday, the foundation will be hosting its annual gala at Hermitage Country Club, offering all champions of Goochland schools a chance to kick up their heels for a good cause. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the gala, which will begin with a cocktail hour and feature a

silent auction and raffle, casino games, heavy hors d oeuvres and a cash bar. According to GEF Executive Director Cyndy Brown, the annual event is an opportunity to learn more about the important work the Goochland Education Foundation does to strengthen critical 21st century and STEM skills and ensure equity in education. “We are excited that so many businesses and individuals recognize the importance of our mission in the county,” said Brown. “By providing visionary and innovative projects, we can help all of the students in the school district prepare for the future, whether they

continue with education after graduating from high school or directly enter the workforce. I deeply appreciate the extraordinary work, time, talent and resources the 2018 Gala committee has poured into this event. It will be one not to be missed this year!” Founded in 2008, the GEF has awarded $15,000 this year to provide Strategic Innovation Grants for Goochland teachers and students. For more information on GEF, or to purchase tickets to this Saturday’s gala, visit https://goochlandedu.org/. Hermitage Country Club is located at 1248 Hermitage Road, in Manakin-Sabot.

BOS approves 2018 budget By Roslyn Ryan Editor

After countless internal meetings, public hearings and presentations – as well as three town hall meetings — Goochland County officials and staff members finally reached the finish line of the 2018 budget process last week. On April 17, supervisors unanimously approved the FY2018 budget, which keeps all rates from 2017 unchanged, including the property tax rate at .53 cents per $100 of

assessed value; the personal and business property tax rate at $4 per $100 of assessed value; and the Tuckahoe Creek Service District ad velorum rate at .32 cents per $100 of assessed value. As board chairman Ken Peterson noted after the final budget vote, the document the board approved represented “an awful lot of work by an awful lot of people.” Peterson thanked county staff for their hard work, and also praised residents for sharing their feedback throughout the process.

County Administrator John Budesky assured those in attendance that he, the board and all county staff members consider the budget process one of their top priorities in any given year. “You entrust us with your tax dollars, and we take that responsibility very seriously,” he said, adding that the completion of this year’s budget doesn’t mean they’ll be taking a break from crunching numbers. As Budesky pointed out, “We will start next year’s budget tomorrow.”

Three Goochland students honored for outstanding essays on their pets By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Three local elementary school students took center stage last Thursday during a reception to honor the winners of the first-ever Love My Goochland Pet essay contest. Presented by the Goochland Pet Lovers, an organization founded to help raise funds for a new, state-of-the-art animal shelter and pet adoption center currently under construction in Goochland, and the Goochland Education Foundation, the contest offered students the opportunity to share their thoughts on why Goochland is an excellent place to raise a pet.

The Goochland Rotary Club sponsored the contest. From a pool of 75 submissions, the three elementary school winners selected were Callie Paul (1st place), Phoebe Parker (2nd place), Joshua Gaskill (3rd place). After the students read their winning essays, Goochland school superintendant Dr. Jeremy Raley took the microphone to congratulate all three, remarking that he thoroughly enjoyed each submission. “We have some impressive scholars sitting here with us tonight,” he told the audience, thanking them for being part of what he considers one of the most supportive communities

around. To Wayne Dementi, president of the Goochland Pet Lovers, the evening was a way not just to celebrate the county’s talented young writers, but also to honor the legacy of former Goochland County Administrator Becky Dickson, one of the shelter project’s greatest cheerleaders. “This was part of Becky’s dream,” said Dementi, “and I want to thank you all for participating in it.”

this year, with home construction getting underway early next year. Once the eight-year build out is completed, the 153-acre development will feature a 2,000 square foot clubhouse, a number of nature trails and bird-watching areas, and three small parks. Despite the amenities developers promised, concerns remained about the impact of the development on Hockett Road, which is now expected to see an additional 2,957 vehicle trips per day by 2025 In addition to several other changes made to help mitigate

traffic impact, the developers offered a cash proffer of $12,592 per home to offset the impact the development will have on county services. That proffer, originally $1,585 per home, was increased after the county planning department used the newly acquired Capital Impact Model to better assess how the project would impact areas such as roads and emergency services. The applicant also agreed to make sure that no homes would be built in the flood plain that runs through the property.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Lest ye be judged: A lesson on when to zip it By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Karma, to put it politely, can be a nasty woman indeed. Years ago, after leaving the constant cacophony of the city for the much quieter countryside, I am ashamed to admit I used to chuckle at the people I would hear complaining publicly about the various noises they were forced to deal with due to their neighbors. The complaints ran the gamut — from barking dogs to loud music to shooting that went on from the early morning until well after dark. And they often struck me as much ado about nothing. Of course it’s annoying, I would

say to them (always in my head, of course), but you’ve obviously never been awakened every morning by what sounds like a football team line dancing in the apartment above yours, or attempted to sleep through a city sanitation department’s Songs in the Key of Garbage Truck playing right outside your window. The country has trees, and space, and fresh air, I would think. Are you really whining about a barking dog? Cut to about 20 years later and I am still enjoying country life, albeit with the knowledge that twice a day my next door neighbor will realize it is time to feed his pack of what sounds like roughly 400 hunting dogs but is in reality around five or six.

His dogs will go crazy, which makes my dogs go crazy, which is sure to make anyone in the same room with them when this happens just a little crazy too. There also is a gentleman who lives up the road that is either very, very into target shooting or is running some kind of full-on military training camp out of his yard — I’m not sure which, but I’m pretty sure from the sound of it that he recently became the proud owner of a howitzer. It is seriously that loud. I have always been the first to say that choosing to live in a rural area means choosing to live with things that may not always fit perfectly into the picket-fence, postcard ideal of country life — it isn’t all fat,

ripe tomatoes and home-canned preserves, if you know what I mean. These days I have made my peace with the clamor and the critters, choosing instead to focus on the millions of stars I can see at night, the explosion of color in my yard every fall, and the smell of honeysuckle on a warm summer evening. I won’t say I love the noise, but I do love my neighbors, and so far we have managed to co-exist peacefully. I’ve learned more or less to live and let live, but I also think twice before mocking the kvetching of others. If Karma has anything else in store for me, she can keep it to herself.

Residents can help keep neighbors from going hungry By Terry Ebright GoochlandCares

Each year Goochland-area food pantries (listed below) feed more than 1800 Goochland individuals experiencing food-insecurity—and one of those individuals is Rachel. Rachel is someone who struggles to make sure her family has food on the table every day. She works two-part time jobs but still struggles to pay rent, buy medications for her disabled son, and pur-

chase car insurance each month. Rachel depends on donated pantry food to make sure her family will not be hungry between paychecks. Rachel, and families like hers, is why Goochland food pantries work together every spring to organize a community-wide food drive. Rachel lives in western Goochland which The Federation of Virginia Food Banks considers to be a “food desert” -- an area where populations live more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.

Allison Peterson When I was a young professional working at a college in South Carolina, I had the privilege of being invited to lunch by several faculty members. One was a physicist, a field about which I knew nothing. But this gentleman put me at ease quickly as he told a stor about story th the best a advice he h ever had b e e n given: W When you are asked to take on a new project or responsibility, first say “yes” and then figure out how. I believe that was the best advice I’ve ever been given as well. I’ve worked in many different settings during my career, but in each job, I’ve been challenged over and over by having to learn new things and volunteer for new initiatives. All I brought to these experiences was a desire to contribute and a belief that what I did not know at the start of the project, I would be able to learn. I’ll never know if the fellow who shared that advice knew I would embrace it for myself. But I’ll never forget it, and in my work with students, I share it all the time. Allison Peterson, MS Ed., is the Career Counselor at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing. She resides in Goochland with her family. *** Do you have some advice you would like to share? Bulldogs outlast Cumberland in 3-1 victory By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The bats of the Goochland baseball team had been on a roll entering the April 23 game against Cumberland at Goochland High School. But, against the Dukes, the Bulldogs batters had a bad habit of making solid contact that just happened to go right

to where the Cumberland defenders were playing. However, Goochland was able to find enough open space in the Dukes defense to win 3-1 in the James River District matchup with Cumberland. “It was a close game,” Bulldogs head coach Wes Farkas said. “I thought out pitchers actually pitched pret-

ty well. We just did not give them any run support. We hit the ball very well at times, but right at them. They made plays. I mean, credit to them, they made plays when they had to and we hit it right at them.” Joey Ramsbottom started on the mound for Goochland and sat down the first Cumberland hitter he faced

in the first inning, but Braden Gilman doubled for the first baserunner of the game. Ramsbottom got Cole Fillman to ground out to second base for the second out, but Jordan Smith singled to right field and scored Fillman to make it 1-0. While Ramsbottom, and later Zach Potts, were largely able to keep the Cumberland

hitters off the bases, the Bulldogs hitters weren’t able to take advantage of several opportunities. In the first, Walker Murray reached on an error and stole second with one out, but couldn’t find his way home. In the second, Goochland’s Austin Rose reached on an error and Ramsbottom singled to put two on with

two outs, but Fillman struck Cole Nuckols out to end that threat. In the third inning, John King reached base after he was hit by a pitch with two outs, but Wyatt Murray flew out to centerfield to end that frame. It wasn’t until the botsee Bulldogs>8

Roundup: Kyle Busch sets new track record in win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It didn’t seem likely early on that Kyle Busch would be able to win his third consecutive race in the Monster Energy Cup Series. Busch started deep in the field and the Fords of Stewart-Haas Racing and Team Penske dominated the first two-thirds of the race. But, Busch kept the leaders within reach throughout the race and took advantage of late caution flags and solid pit stops to win the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway on April 21. It was Busch’s fifth win alltime in the Monster Energy Cup Series at Richmond Raceway, but was his first since winning the Capital City 400 in April, 2012. The win was also the deepest in the field a racewinner had ever come from to win the race in Richmond Raceway history. The previous record was held by Clint Bowyer, who started 31st in May, 2008. “You just have to work,” Busch said in Victory Lane. “The pit crew tonight won this race for us. They got us off first those last two times

Goochland’s softball team fell to Central Lunenburg on April 19 by a score of 3-1. McKenzie Reams went 1 for 3 with the lone RBI for the Bulldogs. Earlier in the week, Goochland fell to Amelia 7-0 on April 17. Reams was 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs in the loss. The Raiders allowed only three Goochland hits. The Bulldogs bounced back from the losses with a 21-2 triumph over Cumberland on April 23.

Goochland’s girls tennis team edged Bruton 5-4 on April 19. Peyton Nadder won a close match at No. 1 singles 6-4, 3-6, 13-11. Alexis Wiggins won 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, Autumn Baker won 7-5, 6-2 and Meghan Wright won 9-7, 6-1. In doubles, Wiggins and Wright won their doubles match 8-3 to secure the win over the Panthers. cer team took down Central Lunenburg 9-1 on April 19. Matthew Lewis and Preston Doersch each scored two goals for the Bulldogs, while Yusuf Moustafa, AbdulAziz Socarras, Hunter Willms, Walker Schatz and Noah BOYS SOCCER Spangler scored one goal each Goochland’s boys soc- in the win.

Goochland’s track team hosted Amelia and Buckingham on April 18 and both the boys and girls teams defeated the Raiders and Knights. The Bulldogs boys team scored 70 points to Buckingham’s 50 and Amelia 46.

The girls team scored 84 points, while Buckingham scored 64 and Amelia scored 15. On April 20, Victoria Spooner participated in the Lee-Davis Invitational. Spooner ran in the 800 meters and ran a 2:34.71, good for 19th place.

inning and allowed just four Cumberland base runners over the span of the final three innings. The two pitchers combined to allow just two hits and struck out 11 batters. “I think they pitched well,” Farkas said. “It’s exciting for us, trying to eat up some innings and try to figure out who is going to fill in some innings.” On April 19, Goochland defeated Central Lunenberg

where you just don’t bring the bats.” One of Farkas’ players, John King, was recently named the Class 2 Male Athlete of the Year by the Virginia High School League and was awarded a scholarship. “It’s a great honor for him,” he said. “He’s a spark. He’s a three-year starter. He hits the ball hard every time. Our guys really respond to his leadership for sure.”

The Bulldogs traveled to Nottoway on April 24 and Fluvanna on April 27. Farkas said that his team knows what they need to improve upon as the season moves along. “We need to cut down on our errors,” he said. “We’ve made some mistakes in the field. We need to lock in on defense and that’s the key for us. We also need to keep hitting the way we have the last few weeks.”

13-2 and beat Amelia on April 17 17-3. Farkas said he thought his team had hit its stride prior to the low offensive numbers against Cumberland. “We just didn’t bring the bats today,” he said. “But, for the most part, we are in a good position. We just can’t have too many games like this. We’ve been hitting the ball really well and so just every once in a while, you have a game like this
