Extension program Pets of the week could help get lawn into tip-top shape Contributed report

The Goochland and Powhatan Extension offices are offering a lawn evaluation and best practices program called Smart Lawns. As part of the program, Master Gardener volunteers will schedule a visit to participnats’ lawns to measure the total lawn area, evaluate the existing lawn and take a single soil sample. Soil samples will be analyzed at the Virginia Tech Soil Testing lab. Based on the results of the soil analysis and the onsite evaluation, homeowners will then be provided with a lawn maintenance and nutrient application plan to help achieve a healthy and attractive lawn. Anyone wishing to enroll in this program is urged to contact or the Goochland or Powhatan Extension office to obtain an enrollment form and a home owner lawn pre-

survey. Applications will be accepted until Friday, May 18, 2018. The completed enrollment and survey form should be returned to either Extension office along with a check for $20 payable to the “Treasurer of Virginia Tech.” A survey plat or a hand drawing of the lawn area should be submitted with the completed enrollment forms to the Goochland Extension Office, 1876 Sandy Hook Road, P.O. Box 20, Goochland, VA 23063 or to the Powhatan Extension Office, 3910 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. Additional soil tests for specific areas of the lawn may be requested for $10 per sample. Once all materials are received, a date and time will be set-up for the site visit. For more information, call the Goochland office at (804) 5565841 or Powhatan office at (804) 598-5640.

Celebrating wisdom that comes with age By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Of all the experiences, positive and negative, that I have ever had in a hospital, there is one that stands out above all the others. The scene: It is about 10 years ago, on a warm summer evening, and I have found myself presented with the truly terrifying task of rushing a close relative to the ER with complaints of chest pains. As I am forced to stand helplessly, watching the carefully choreographed ballet that is modern emergency medicine unfold, I cannot help but notice that one of

the doctors — a slightly stooped, bespectacled gentleman who looked to be around 70— appears to be just a bit less frantic than his younger colleagues. He is keeping an eye on the monitors, of course, and reviewing the EKG, but he also is quietly, from off to the side, paying much closer attention to the patient than perhaps anyone else in the room. When he gently suggests, against what the younger doctors had presumed, that what they are witnessing is not in fact a heart attack, he is met with what looks to me like pure bewilderment from his colleagues. But would it surprise you even

one iota, dear reader, to learn that he turned out to be right? This, of course, is just one story, and I have no doubt most of our readers could give examples of very similar experiences, those times when the wisdom that comes with experience carries the day. It’s the mechanic who’s been turning wrenches for half a century -- the one who can diagnose a problem from the sound a car makes pulling into the lot — and the octogenarian baker who can tell by the feel of the dough exactly how the loaves will turn out. It’s the grandmother who can soothe a new mother’s fears and the long-time teacher who has

learned how to motivate each individual student in just the right way. Last week, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the month of May Older Americans Month, offering their gratitude for all that these residents do to build and maintain strong, healthy, thriving communities. It was a wonderful tribute to an often under-recognized demographic, and one that will hopefully spark a renewed appreciated for all that our seniors contribute. In this modern world where everything can sometimes feel disposable, their wisdom is the one thing that always maintains its value.

Letters to the Editor Local firefighter went above and beyond Dear Editor, Our grandson loves to play firefighter and superhero saving the world from all sorts of problems a 4-year-old can muster up. Whenever we pass my local Station #3 in Centerville, we have a guessing game as to whether the fire truck will be outside or inside. Because our little John is so enamored with this occupation, his

Grampy thought it would be fun to stop by the firehouse, so we did just that last week. We told him that since we were going unannounced, the firefighters might be busy and we might not be able to stay. We were pleased to see a fire truck in the driveway and were greeted by Firefighter Lee who was very welcoming. Our usual talkative grandson turned mute and shy, possibly overwhelmed by the immense size of the truck up close and personal.

I can tell you I was too. Lee was very sweet and gentle with John, helping him climb into the driver’s seat, turning on the blinking lights, and taking the time to open all of the compartments of the truck to show us the specialized equipment. He took us around the firehouse to show us all of the other emergency vehicles as well. It was certainly an amazing and impressive learning experience even for Grampy and I, enforcing the fact that our selfless firefighters not only give of their

time to man the fire station and respond to calls, but give of their time to become expert in knowing how to use all of the equipment needed for the many different kinds of emergencies they encounter. Our firefighters and emergency responders are definitely super heroes in my book. Many thanks to Firefighter Lee and all those who keep us safe. “Grammy” Terry Festa Manakin Sabot see Letters > 7

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.

William Quarles, Jr. My family, my school teachers, my friends, and my detractors — they’ve all given me lots of advice over time. I’m thankful for all of their advice. One piece of advice that I remember came from my brother-in-law. We were finishing up a conversation about working too many hours and forgetting to tak some time take fo for myself. T To explain h his point, h he pointed to an old balanc scale on ance his sh shelf. He said, “William, the universe will always seek balance. Be careful of what you say, think or do in excess.” I thought to myself, “Be in balance — it’s such a positive statement.” When someone tells us, “you need more balance,” it’s most often in relation to work, as in “worklife balance.” However, it can also pertain to spending time with our friends and family, resting, exercising, care giving, volunteering for a cause, participating in hobbies, or engaging in spiritual development. We perceive most of our decisions as a choice between right and wrong. In reality, this choice is often false. If balance is created by equalizing the weight of two sides, there is no “wrong” choice. However, any positive activity in life can end up being detrimental when taken to an extreme. Just like too much weight on one side of a balance risks breaking the scale. So, my advice to you is to be kind, but don’t let people abuse you. Trust, but don’t be deceived. Be content, but never stop improving yourself.

Students, parents should carefully consider next step Dear Editor, Your column “Terrible advice for high school seniors” on April 5 was clever and

contained many of the issues graduating seniors will have to confront soon. Since your column was about going to college, I would like to add that while college is a great choice for many it is not for everyone. As a community college faculty member and administrator for over 30 years I have seen countless students on both

sides of that issue. One of the worst outcomes is discovering college is not for you and ending up with a pile of debt you got to pay for it and having no degree. So, in all seriousness, BEFORE a high school senior (and parents) decides to pursue that four-year degree and borrowing a bunch of money to get it, consider the alter-

natives of many well-paying career options that do not require a four-year degree, such as apprenticeships, technical certifications and twoyear certificates/degrees. And be very wary and smart about taking on debt to get any postsecondary credential. Dr. Richard Wilt Sandy Hook

Fern, she seems very nice, but we honestly have very little in common and I really don’t have the time or energy to give right now. Is there any polite way to get her to understand that I appreciate the fact that we are related, but I’m not really interested in developing a close relationship?

Must ‘related’ always imply a relationship? Dear Fern, n I am hoping you can o help me find a way to approach a rather delicate situation—I am honestly unsure of how to proceed. Several months ago, I received a call from a woman I had never met. I won’t get into all of the details, but as it turns out this woman is my half sister from my father’s first marriage (I had heard about her once or twice, but never knew where she lived or any other details). Fern, she was very polite and I enjoyed speaking with her, but now she has taken to calling me several

Goochland’s Carleigh Gilstrap (2) was 1 for 1 with a triple and two walks against Nottoway on May 7. Gilstrap also scored the only run of the game in the 1-0 Bulldogs win after a single from Katelin Martin. Gilstrap also made several big plays in the field to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard.

Bulldogs hand Nottoway first district loss By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Sometimes, one run scored and a solid defense is the perfect recipe for success. That was exactly what the Goochland softball team ordered up on May 7 at home against Nottoway. Goochland’s Katelin Martin knocked in Carleigh

Gilstrap in the bottom of the third inning for the lone run of the game and the Bulldogs defense handled the rest in the 1-0 win. “We feel good,” Bulldogs coach Amy Henneberger said. “We’ve had a lot of one-run games with them in the past. The girls had a lot of confidence today.” The loss was big for

Nottoway as it was its first loss in the district and just its second loss this season. It was the first time all season that the Cougars have been shutout. Goochland and Nottoway went back-and-forth throughout the entire game, with each team having several chances to put runs on the board.

The best chance for the Cougars came in the top of the third inning and gave a swing of momentum to the Bulldogs that they wouldn’t miss. Nottoway’s Amaya Meekins led the inning off with a single and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Kayla McCraw. Then, Hannah Watts sin-

gled and advanced to second on ensuing throw to put runners at second and third with just one out. Kolby Abel came to the plate and flew out to left field, with Meekins appearing to tag up at third and score the first run of the game. But, Henneberger came out and argued the call, with pitcher Lexi Hooe running

over to third and tagging the base to complete the challenge. The umpire ruled Meekins left early and what was originally a sacrifice fly and run scored was turned into an inning-ending double play that injected energy into the Bulldogs. see Bulldogs>9

Roundup: Goochland baseball extends win streak From staff reports

Goochland’s baseball team is on quite a roll as the season is winding down. The Bulldogs have won eight games in a row, including a 6-1 win over Nottoway on May 7. Goochland’s Austin Rose was 2 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs in the win over the Cougars. Tyler Gentry was 2 for 3 with a run scored and Zac Harlow scored a run as well. On the mound, the Murray brothers combined to shut down the Nottoway offense. Wyatt Murray pitched four innings and struck out five batters, while Walker Murray pitched three innings and also struck out five batters. The pair allowed just six combined hits. On May 3, the Bulldogs traveled to Cumberland and defeated the Dukes 13-1. Wyatt Murray led the Goochland offense, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs. Rose was 2 for 2 and Tyler Ott was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs. Gentry pitched all five

Bulldogs continued from >8 In the bottom of the third, Gilstrap worked a walk to begin the inning and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt from Cherish Sims. McKenzie Reams then singled to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Martin delivered a hit to left field, which scored Gilstrap to make it 1-0.

innings and struck out nine batters. On May 1, Goochland shut out Buckingham 10-0. John King was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs. Gentry was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, while Joey Ramsbottom was 2 for 3 with two runs and 2 RBIs. Goochland hosted Bluestone on May 8 prior and will head to Randolph-Henry on May 10. At Hanover High School on May 2, Benedictine and Hanover faced off in a battle of teams in the TimesDispatch Top 10. Benedictine junior Casey Green pitched six innings, then made the defensive play of the game as a first baseman, propelling Benedictine to a 2-1 win over Hanover. He allowed three hits and one unearned run Wednesday, striking out seven and walking none. But Hanover’s Blake Doggett led off the seventh inning with a double, a deep fly that landed on the leftfield warning track. Then, Green threw a wild pitch that put pinch runner

ed season with three recent district wins. On May 2, the Bulldogs defeated Cumberland 8-0. Vincent, Lowery and BOYS SOCCER Gordon each scored two Goochland’s boys soccer goals against the Dukes, while team continued its undefeat- Baker added one goal.

Cumberland also had an own goal. Then, on May 3, Central Lunenburg fell to the Bulldogs on 7-0. Lowery scored three goals for Goochland against the Chargers, while Trevor,

Willms, Gordon and Doersch

“I was really motivated to score and win,” Gilstrap said. “I really wanted to get that win.” Then, Hooe and the Bulldogs defense clamped down and didn’t allow practically any offensive production from the Cougars. From the top of the fourth inning until the end, no Nottoway runner made it past second base. After delivering on offense, Gilstrap came through on

defense as well for Goochland. In the top of the fifth inning, Nottoway had a runner on second with one out when Meekins hit a rocket to the right of second base. Gilstrap made a stab at the ball, grabbed it, and made the play at first base, which saved what could have been a gametying run. “I tried my hardest,” she said. “I’m really comfortable at second and with my defense.”

Gilstrap ended the game with her glove on a line drive, which she plucked out of the air to seal the win. “They played a great defensive game,” Henneberger said. “They believe in themselves on defense as well.” The win was a redemption win of sorts for the Bulldogs as the first meeting with Nottoway was a 6-0 loss in the first game of the season. The Bulldogs have now won five-in-a-row, including

a 20-1 win over Cumberland on May 3 and an 18-7 win over Buckingham on May 1. Goochland travelled to Bluestone on May 8 and will host Randolph-Henry on May 10. Henneberger said she believes that this win over the Cougars will give the Bulldogs a nice boost as the season is winding down. “This is the time when you want to be getting the wins and finish strong,” she said.

Noah Biggs at third base. With the tying run 90 feet from home, Green moved to first base and was replaced on the mound by freshman Jay Woolfolk. On a 2-2 count, Colby Hutnan hit a hard grounder to the right side. Green hit the dirt, snagging the ball in his glove. He leaped up, threw home, and catcher Holden Fiedler tagged out Biggs. “It’s just instinct,” Green said. “It’s over before you know it.” Woolfolk struck out the next two batters and ended the game. Benedictine improved to 20-1. Hanover (7-5) ended a seven-game winning streak. Hanover’s Jack Dragum gave up a solo home run to Fiedler, who rocketed the ball beyond the center field fence. The next batter, Josh Brown, hit a double, then scored on a single by Woolfolk.

Goochland’s John King was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs in the Bulldogs 10-0 win over Buckingham on May 1.

Gilstrap also tripled in the bottom of the fifth to lead off that inning and possibly help score an insurance run for the Bulldogs, but Goochland was unable to take advantage of that opportunity. In the sixth inning, the Cougars had runners on first and second with one out, but a groundball to third turned into an inning-ending double play orchestrated by the Bulldogs. In the top of the seventh,

each added one goal. On May 7, Goochland took down Bluestone 6-2. Eric

In the Garden

Heartbreak in the South: Why won’t my tulips return? By Virginia McCown Goochland/Powhatan Master Gardener

Q

For years I dreamed of creating a large bed of showy tulips. My tulips were beautiful the first year, but the following year many didn’t blossom. Some never even came up. What became of my dream? Heart Broken in the South

A

:I’m sorry to inform you that rather than fulfilled flowery dreams, you are suffering from a malady many endure in our latitude. It’s called Tulip Envy. Let me guess... The first autumn after you moved, you planted the most expensive, splendid and rare hybrid tulip bulbs money could buy. Gloating with pride the following spring, you emailed incredible photos back to friends still trapped in your ice encrusted homeland. Felt good while it lasted, didn’t it? Well, here’s what went wrong...

The ABCs of Tulips Hybrid tulips, those showy large tulips, require three months of cool temperatures after blooming. They also need lots of sun. Tulip leaves collect energy from the sun and channel the nutrition to the bulb. In the South, there is barely more than a month of cool temperatures after our tulips bloom. We typically jump from winter to summer in our region. What happens is only half the tulips that bloomed in a bed one year will bloom the following

spring. Like with real estate it’s all about location. With a good site and dedicated care, the hybrid tulip’s life span can be extended to several seasons. That’s optimistic. In our region hybrid tulips are treated as annual flowers. In other words, don’t expect them to return season after season or perennialize. It’s nice if they do, but don’t count on it. “Tulips don’t like hot, dry soil,” says Brent Heath of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs in Gloucester (www.brentandbeckysbulbs. com). He recommends planting tulip bulbs a little deeper than we do in colder climes -at about a depth of eight inches in well-drained soil.

Species Tulips Here’s good news. There are some tulip breeds that have a hardier constitution. They’re called species tulips. “They are high mountain desert plants,” says Heath. In Central Virginia Tulipa clusiana does well. Heath recommends clusiana ‘Lady Jane,’ clusiana ‘Peppermint Stick,’ clusiana ‘Cynthia,’ and clusiana ‘Chrysantha.’ These blooms return year after year or perennialize. The species tulips will even multiply if planted in the right spot. Because species tulips are a mere quarter the size of hybrid tulips, they are best placed in the front rows of perennial beds or in rock gardens.

Darwin hybrids If you can’t resist hybrid tulips, “Darwin hybrids are the most perennializing,” says Heath. Darwin hybrids are the most reliable performers and will bloom for more than one or two years. They’re early bloomers and their blossoms

are fairly heat tolerant. They grow well in either full sun or partial shade. Introduced more than 60 years ago, Darwin hybrid tulips are a cross between single late tulips and early emperor tulips. This lineage is what gives them that classic tulip appearance with fairly large blooms on elongated stems. Darwin hybrids generally bloom in Central Virginia between late April and mid-May.

Planting, predation One thing all tulips have in common: they’re a delicacy to moles, voles, and squirrels. Heath recommends applying a spray repellent on bulbs before planting to protect your lovely bulbs from becoming a banquet for rodents. These repellents — such as hot wax pepper spray — are available at nurseries or most stores that sell plants. All tulip bulbs should be planted in late fall after the ground has cooled or after the first freeze. Again, Heath recommends the bulbs be planted about eight inches deep in a loose well-drained planting bed. Tulips should be given an application of fertilizer (8-8-8) at least twice per year: first while planting and again in spring when shoots first appear. Removing the flower stalks as they fade will also slow the decline of hybrid tulips. Allow the leaves to slowly fade from green to yellow. During this time the plant will be storing energy for next year’s flowers. Virginia McCown is master gardener living in Central Virginia along with her garden and assorted creatures both great and small.

America were first established in the 1880s and were attended by children without their parents for overnight stays. By the 20th century, summer camps had become an international phenomenon, and various organizations hosted traditional summer camps or camps geared toward religion, sports, music and other subjects and activities. According to the American Camp Association, each year more than 14 million children and adults in the United States attend camp. America is home to more than 14,000 day and resident camps (8,400 are overnight camps and 5,600 are day camps). Nonprofit groups are the largest sponsors of summer camps.

activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion.

uch like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies.

Be a source of encouragement Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Metro

Involve kids in your own hobbies Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item

goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines.

Let kids choose an activity While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own

Don’t hesitate to focus on fun Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible. Hobbies can enrich the lives of children. Finding the right activity may require some patience on the part of parents and youngsters alike. - Metro Creative
