Reynolds announces new leader Dr. Paula Pando has been named new president of local community college
Craft, once submerged in James, helped make river crossing convenient
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
After an extensive search that included over 100 applicants, Dr. Paula P. Pando has been selected as the new president of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. “Paula Pando’s life is a uniquely American success story,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “She was very young when her family came to the U.S. from Pando Chile. She had to learn a new language and a new culture, and she has excelled ever since. She has built an impressive career, focused on helping people find and leverage opportunity, and I expect her to be a terrific president for Reynolds Community see Pando > 2

Close to 50 fishermen joined in a fishing tournament at Pin Oak Farm on Saturday, May 26, to benefit the Goochland Pet Lovers organization. Fishing was good for everyone, organizers reported, with plenty of 3-4 lb bass caught in the catch-andrelease tournament that ultimately raised $10,000 for GPL. The event’s host, Phil Gaeser, said he was pleased with the support — and was very happy that his fish were hungry. Above, Ethan Mayben shows off his catch as Dennis Proffitt looks on.
By the time Joe Liesfeld found the old boat — half submerged in the James and coated with a thick layer of river mud — it wasn’t much to look at. It was certainly impressive size-wise, to be sure, measuring over 50 feet and studded with handforged iron bolts the size of a grown man’s fist. But time and the elements had taken their toll, and the great, hulking boards that made up the boat’s sides were now pocked with holes. The bottom had also partially rotted away, all but dashing any hope that the old vessel would ever float again. Most people likely would have left it there, undisturbed, to continue its disintegration. But Joe Liesfeld isn’t most people.

Pando continued from >1 College.” Pando will become the college’s fourth president, succeeding Dr. Gary Rhodes, who will retire on Sept. 1 after serving in that role for 16 years. “Reynolds was blessed to receive an array of well-qualified candidates interested in serving as the next president of the college,” said Stephen E. Baril, chair of the Reynolds Community College local board. “She received outstanding reviews from faculty, staff, community leaders, and the College Board. We are delighted that Dr. Paula Pando has accepted our offer to be the next president of our college.” Pando has worked in higher education for more than 21 years. She began her career in 1994 as the director of campus activities and programs at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey. Beginning in 2000, Pando worked as a consultant for a New York firm, facilitating sensitivity and diversity training, among other topics. In 2003, she joined Hudson
County Community College, in Jersey City, as the associate dean for student services. She has since risen through the ranks, holding three different vice presidencies, including her current role as senior vice president for student and educational services. “I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to lead Reynolds Community College as it approaches its half-century mark of providing the Richmond area outstanding educational opportunities, and to join the forward-thinking community college system that is the VCCS,” Pando said. In 2017, Pando was among 38 leaders from across the country selected for the Aspen Presidential Fellowship for Community College Excellence, a rigorous 10 month applied leadership program. Pando holds a doctorate from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey; a master’s degree from Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey; and bachelor’s degree from Stockton University in Pomona, New Jersey.

County working to find homes for hounds By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In an effort to find homes for 14 hound dogs currently being housed in the county animal shelter, Goochland Animal Control will be waiving the adoption fee on these animals until May 31. Shelter Coordinator Julie Lawrence, who has worked at the shelter for five years, said
this is the first time she had seen this many hounds at the facility at one time. “Every cage is filled at the moment,” said Lawrence, who describes the animals as “very lovable” dogs who will make excellent pets. All the animals have been given rabies and distemper shots, she confirmed, and most have been spayed or neutered.
The Goochland Animal Shelter, located at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information on the hounds currently up for adoption, as well as the many other dogs and cats still in need of homes, call (804) 556-5302 or visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”
Heard ’round town (Editor’s note: The following information was shared by Goochland resident Doug Knapp during the public comment period of May 1 Board of Supervisors meeting. As it serves to highlight the wonderful work of our brave local first responders, we felt compelled to share it here. ) ’m not normally a superstitious person, but Friday, April 13, was not a good day for our neighborhood. I got a phone call at about 3:30 in the afternoon from a neighbor, indicating to me that [another neighbors’] house was on fire. My neighbor told me that the fire was heading in my direction, and that I ought to get
“I
outside very, very quickly. I stood outside and watched a fully engaged fire go on for a little while, until the fire department came. “I witnessed something that day, firsthand. I saw people tackle hoses, tackle smoke that was filling my lungs—I could barely talk because the wind was blowing so hard that day, towards my house. I saw our firefighters just dive directly into harm’s way. “I was outside because the wind was so strong. I was watching my own house. We had, I think four or fire departments from Goochland County there—we had Manakin, we had Centerville, we had Courthouse, and Crozier. All
were there working incredibly hard. At one point I looked up at my roof, and my roof was on fire. I immediately ran two doors down to where all those fire engines were, and the firemen are waving me back. And I said ‘My roof is on fire!’ — and one of the firefighters came up to me and said, in an amazingly calm way,: ‘Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it.’ “And they put that fire out. We are so incredibly grateful to Chief MacKay, and all of his firefighters. I just wanted to come before you as a citizen of Goochland County to tell you how proud I am of what you do, and what all of our volunteers and our paid employees do. “

Ferry continued from >1 Liesfeld began asking questions about the boat, what it was used for and who might have left it there. And what he found out suddenly cast the decaying old craft in a whole new light. The boat, as it turned out, had once served as a ferry to take people living and working at Powhatan’s Belmead property – the site of a revolutionary school founded in the early 1900s to provide a first-class education for African-American and Native American students--across the James River to the train station in Goochland. If not for the service, those residents would have been forced to travel long distances on rough roads to reach another crossing point. Powhatan resident Sandra Morris-Kemp didn’t attend St. Francis, but she does have a deeply personal connection to the ferry: her father
Ivory Morris, who served as a carpenter and instructor at the school many decades ago, built a number of them for the school. Liesfeld, who serves as president of J.E. Liesfeld Contractor, Inc., was able to have the ferry pulled from the water and transported to Rassawek, the bucolic vineyard he founded in western Goochland in 2000. There, last Wednesday, he was able to show it to MorrisKemp, as well as to local historians Dr. Richard Moss and Eve Gregory. The three marveled at the craftsmanship of the vessel, as well as the significance of the role it played in the lives of so many African-Americans in the area. In black and white photos culled from the Powhatan Historical Society archives, they were able to see what it looked like when it was packed full of passengers making their way across the river. Chatting with MorrisKemp, Liesfeld raised the idea

of perhaps doing some kind of documentary on the boat in the future. Liesfeld plans to have the ferry on display during this weekend’s annual Rassawek Spring Jubilee, an always popular and well-attended two-day event focused on, as Liesfeld describes it “the local, handmade and homegrown.” In addition to wine tastings and displays set up by dozens of local artists and craftspeople, the event will offer plenty of local food, blacksmith and sawmill demonstrations, a chance to take a helicopter tour of the area, and even a kid-friendly catch-and-release fishing tournament. Musicians including Susan Greenbaum and acts including the Ray Pittman Band and the Commonwealth Bluegrass Band will also perform. As always, grads face whole new world By Roslyn Ryan Editor
It was all supposed to be so simple. Back many years ago, if a kid in my hometown managed to make it through four years of college but neglected to think much further about what he or she would actually do with their degree, the answer given by so many of our parents was always the same: “Well, you can always go work at (insert the name of a large insurance or financial services company) until you figure out what you want to do next.” I used to occasionally picture
this place in my head, a monolithic gray building located somewhere out in the suburbs, slowly absorbing a human tired of aimless recent college grads who had majored in Political Science, Sociology or English Literature and were now living back at home. The theory behind our parents’ well-intentioned advice was clear: Go to college, get decent grades, choose any liberal arts major that sounds OK, and you’ll be fine. As it turns out, it was great advice . . . just a few decades too late. It occurred to me fairly late in life that so many of us — no matter our ages — fall victim to the
same, somewhat amusing problem: Even the most loving, earnest, well-meaning parents often raise their children to be successful, productive members of the world they themselves grew up in. The only snag is that, by the time they are done raising those children, the world doesn’t quite look the same. By the time I got out of college, the world had changed. Many more kids were going to — and graduating from — universities, and the old standby employers no longer found random Liberal Arts degrees quite as appealing. These days, with the daunting challenge of finding stable, good-
paying, entry-level jobs, many recent college graduates could be forgiven for feeling something akin to abject panic. Those of you who are graduating into the world this month will face opportunities and witness advances that your parents may not have even dreamed of. But you also will face obstacles that they may not have known how to prepare you for. The good thing is, it’s going to work out. I can almost guarantee you that. The challenge is that, for the first time in your life, you’re probably going to have to figure it out on your own.
Old boots are priceless reminder of father’s life By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
When my father returned home from World War II, he left most of the reminders of Army life behind, and, unlike many of his friends dads, he left uniforms, weapons and mementos behind. He had other things on his mind, namely a newlywed wife and a strong desire to get on with his life. Besides a couple of trunks that sat in our attic never opened for years and a pair of old worn combat boots, that portion of his life seemed buried.
As children, we would gather the few items he did retrieve and play army in our backyard. Two older shelter halves and some rickety poles served as our headquarters, and we huddled in what we called our bivouac and made plans to defeat the Germans. I had my father’s old canteen, a few badges and medals whose meanings I hadn’t a clue and an old hat from his days as a lieutenant in the quartermaster corps. It seemed my friends had much more WWII paraphernalia, and some wore old uniforms, wore battle-worn knapsacks, and bragged that their

fathers still had a knife from the war. How lucky could a kid get, I thought to myself. I never paid much attention to the old boots, but, they, somehow, seemed like his most valued memento from his war days. Despite my mother’s insistence that we throw the old eyesores out, he managed to hang on to those boots. We only saw him wear the boots when it snowed, and while the rest of us struggled with non-forgiving rubber boots, he slipped on what must have been familiar-feeling boots. He would tuck in his tailored pants
into the worn boots, and, as he stood outside, you could sense the boots transformed him to his days in the Army. We thought the boots looked funny with his pleated pant legs tucked neatly around the tops, but we showed him and the boots the respect they deserved. As they years passed, the boots were relegated to a corner in our furnace room. Each year, they became more weathered and worn, finally approaching what looked to be an unwearable condition. see Boots > 7

White As far back as I can remember, I recall both of my grandfather’s always telling me that, when you get stumble in life, always remember that “it’s how you resp respond to difficul ficult situations th that determ mines your ccharacter and tthe outcome.” I recall he hearing the sam same advice as a you young person on the youth athletic fields growing up and later in life when I was confronted by challenges that were of academic, personal, and financial in nature. When I attended Ferrum College, I also heard the same sentiment from my football coaches and then after that from an Army Drill Sergeant while I was at Ft. Benning, Georgia. I also heard the phrase, “….. It’s how you brush yourself off after this is what will determine your outcome.” I think this has always been told to me as the best way to respond to difficult people and situations. I recently read an article that was written before my father passed away. In a paper for his college thesis, he articulated his experiences working as an undercover law enforcement officer in the Tidewater Region of Virginia. He used a similar phrase, “…it’s how you brush yourself off that will determine your success or failure.” Upon spending 28 years investigating homicides, other violent and major crimes as a detective with the Richmond Police Department and now with the Commonwealth of Virginia, I try to apply the very advice provided me throughout my life. No matter what your situation is, in my opinion when you get knocked down, get back up, brush yourself off, and learn from how you got knocked down. Then get back up and let God guide your steps moving forward.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
“The Horse in Ancient Greek Art” in-gallery activities are touch screen animations, videos, hand-on activity and a poem by Virginia poet Ron Smith. On one wall are two screens which show videos designed by VCU students. One video is a twirling large vase. The other screen is an animated video of of a Greek symposium which uses horses instead of men. Dr. Peter Schertz and Nicole Stribling, the co-curators of the exhibition, write about hippomania (a passion for horses), which was prevalent in ancient Greece. Hippomania is also present in Goochland County . This exhibition will enthrall horse lovers of all ages. The exhibit runs through July 8, 2018 at the VMFA Photos by Louisa Preston (www.VMFA.museum), 200 Above, children take part in a hands-on art activity based on the current Virginia Museum of Fine N. By Louisa Preston Special correspondent
For the thousands of Goochland residents who own, ride, or simply love horses, an exhibit currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Art may be just the ticket. “The Horse in Ancient Greek Art,” which opened February 17, 2018, includes black-andred-figure vases, and silver coins displaying images of horses in ancient Greece. From legends and myths, such as Pegasos, the winged horse; to the horse in war and hunting; and equestrian sports; the horse was an important part of ancient Greek culture. The beauty and grace of the horse inspired the ancient Greek artists. The horse was a symbol of wealth, power, and status. Ancient tack, such as bits, illustrate the equestrian life.
This free exhibition is on the second floor of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. Walk through large glass doors to the Evans Court and turn right into the exhibit “The Horse in Ancient Greek Art” . The gallery exhibits ancient vases and objects, which the ancient Greeks used to celebrate the horse in their lives. The horse was used as transportation, hunting, racing, and war. From the ceiling and the walls of the galleries are hangings with enlarged images copied from the vases. The terracotta vases and cups are created from iron-rich clay. The redishorange color is the natural color of the clay. The black color is diluted clay which turns black during the firing process of the pottery. The entire space exists in orange, black and white col-
ors. Reminds me of halloween. Two long tables hold colored pencils and selections of paper cutouts of horses, griffins, etc. which children and adults are encouraged to color. The large decorated vases, filled with olive oil, were awarded as prizes for athletic competitions. The most famous were the Olympics. The ancient Olympic games were founded around 776 BCE. Equestrian events, such as chariot racing, were introduced in the Seventh Century. A small area has small tables and lounge couches to represent a Greek symposium. This was where Greek men gathered to drink wine, discuss politics, tell stories, and be entertained with music and poetry. A perfect place to relax and browse the exhibition catalogue or listen to an audio.

Ridolphi continued from >6 The boots were there on Christmas Eve 1960 when he died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. My mother always believed my father’s time in the Army contributed to his early demise, and the boots became a reminder of that sad reality; but, somehow, they survived and remained tucked in that corner, undisturbed. Years later, when my mother passed, my daughter and I were cleaning out an old jewelry box and discovered all of those old medals we wore as children tucked away in a small pouch. The fact she had saved the faded silver and gold bars, the brightly colored decorations from the campaigns in which he served and the numerous patches from his uniforms surprised me. It shouldn’t have. I realized that because those things were important to my father, they were valuable to my mother, an important memento of a span in his life. Years later, the furnace finally quit and had to be replaced and I went by the house to watch as workers removed the old furnace. After much banging and tearing, the old behemoth surrendered.
7
The old furnace room was empty for the first time in my lifetime, and sitting from what must have been a position behind the old furnace were those old boots. I surmised that my mother garnered the fortitude to move the boots, but couldn’t bring herself to throw them out. The boots now sit in my closet, and, hopefully, someone will take the care to preserve them once that cleanout takes place. As beaten as they are, they are precious to me because they were important to my father and eventually important to my mother. And that makes them priceless to me.

Murray strikes out 10 as Bulldogs advance By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It was less-than-ideal weather conditions during the Region 2A quarterfinal game at Goochland High School on May 28. The rain, heavy at times, didn’t stop Bulldogs pitcher Wyatt Murray, however. Murray was dominant against the Poquoson lineup, striking out 10 Islanders batters en route to a 1-0 completegame win. “I just had to find my groove,” he said. “It all happened from there.” Murray pitched a complete game and surrendered just four hits. Bulldogs coach Wes Farkas was pleased with Murray’s performance. “It was a great game,” he said. “Whenever it’s raining like that, you’re never really sure what kind of command the pitcher is going to have. We fed
him dry balls the best we could. He got ahead a lot on first pitches. They were aggressive, but we got a lot of first-pitch strikes. When he gets ahead, we’re in good shape.” The game started under overcast skies and the rain began to steadily fall beginning in the second inning. From there, it didn’t abate until after the game had ended, with the rain ranging from a drizzle to a downpour and everything in between. Murray said that it was “a little tough” at the beginning to get his grip right, but more of an issue was the mud that accumulated on his cleats around the fourth or fifth inning. “My cleats got super muddy,” he said. “Picking my foot up, as weird as it sounds, the weight on my front foot messed my balance up. I just had to adjust to that.”

Bulldogs softball blows out Arcadia, falls in quarterfinals By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s Katelin Martin got the scoring going against Arcadia with a 2 RBI single in the first.
Goochland’s softball team didn’t waste any time setting the tone in the Region 2A quarterfinal game against Arcadia on May 25 at Goochland High School. The No. 3 seeded Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the first en route to an 11-0 win over the Firebirds in a six-inning game ended by the slaughter rule. “It was a great defensive game,” coach Amy Henneberger said. “We made
a couple nice plays. We had strong pitching and good base running.” After pitcher Lexi Hooe dispatched Arcadia in the top of the first inning, Cherish Sims got the Bulldogs started with a one-out walk. Sims would advance to second base on a steal. After a line drive out off the bat of McKenzie Reams, Hooe singled and advanced to second on the throw. Then, Katelin Martin knocked in Sims and courtesy runner Rachel Carter to make it 2-0 Goochland.
Rachel Ferguson knocked in Martin in the next at-bat to make it 3-0. Arcadia’s best chance to score came in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles, along with an error and a stolen base put runners on second and third with no outs. But, Hooe buckled down and got back-to-back strikeouts and a pop up to herself on the mound to end the Firebirds threat. Arcadia only had two more see Softball>9

Powered by five secondplace finishes, Goochland’s girls track team finished in third place at the Region 2A track meet at Maggie Walker Governor’s School on May 22-23. Dorothy Clore finished second in the 100 meters with a 12.73. She was also sixth in the 200 meters with a 27.76. Victoria Spooner was second in the 800 meters with a 2:32.33. While the girls soccer team was on the right side of an upset, the boys soccer team was on the wrong side of one. The No. 2 seeded Bulldogs fell 2-1 to No. 7 Arcadia on May 25. It was Goochland’s first loss of the entire season.
AWARDS
Goochland’s girls soccer team entered the Region 2A tournament as the No. 10 seed and upset No. 7 West Point 9-0 on May 25. The Bulldogs were led by Abby Whitlock and Julissa Gallegos, who each scored two goals. Jaylene Lopez, Victoria Lopez, Caroline Black, Emmy Alvis and Ruth Wyche each contributed one goal for the Bulldogs.
The James River District announced its awards and the Bulldogs were very well represented. In baseball, Wyatt Murray (at both pitcher and first base), John King and Tyler Ott were named first-team all-district. Murray was named Player BOYS TENNIS of the Year. on a two-out RBI double by Ferguson. Kisha Braxton knocked Ferguson in with a single and advanced two bases on wild pitches during Ellie Spencer’s at-bat. Spencer reached after swinging at strike three, but the ball got away from Arcadia’s catcher, allowing Spencer to reach and Braxton to score to
make it 6-0. The Bulldogs padded their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hooe singled and was replaced on the base paths by Carter. Carter advanced on a single by Martin and would score on a wild pitch to make it 7-0. The final spurt of runs came in the bottom of the

make it 9-0. Then, Ferguson doubled, scoring Maggie Johnson, who ran for Reams, and Hooe to end the game at 11-0. The game was also Senior Night, as the originally scheduled celebration was delayed due to a rainout. The Bulldogs honored Shannon Silver, Sims, Martin, Reams and Braxton.
“They’re good leaders,” Henneberger said of her seniors. “I hate to see them go. They’re a fun bunch.” While the game gave the Bulldogs a boost going into the region quarterfinals, it wasn’t enough to overcome the No. 1 seeded Maggie Walker Green Dragons. in a 16-2 final on May 28, ending Goochland’s season.
to tie the game. But, a line drive to Zac Harlow at second base and a quick flip to shortstop Tyler Gentry was a quick double play that shifted the momentum that Poquoson had been trying to build back toward the Bulldogs. “The defense, I love playing with these guys,” he said. “I’ve been playing with these guys since I was 9, so I have the so much trust in them.” “(The double play) was
a big spark for me,” Harlow added. No Poquoson runner advanced past second base in the game. “Especially in the fifth, sixth and seventh, when (the rain) was really coming down, one or two wet balls and it’s an entirely different game,” Farkas said. “I felt like our guys made plays when they had to. The double play was huge in the sixth. It was a rally killer for
them and the momentum shifted,” he said. “In these conditions, our defense did a great job.” The lone run of the game came for the Bulldogs in the third inning. Joey Ramsbottom had a one-out double and was moved to third after a wild pitch. Ramsbottom scored when John King grounded to the shortstop to make it 1-0 and that was all the Bulldogs need-
ed.
Goochland advanced to the region semifinals and faced either Prince Edward or Greensville on Wednesday, May 30. As the top overall seed, the Bulldogs will at least through the semifinals.
