Former addict will share tale of redemption Talk at Goochland Library will detail misconceptions, struggles drug addicts face By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Courtney Nunnally has a story to tell. And while some of the details from her own past — the harrowing descent from casual drug use as a teen to a full-blown heroin addiction — will sound tragically familiar these days, it’s the most recent chapter of her story that sets her apart. Unlike so many who have lost their lives to opioid addiction, particularly in recent years as the num- Courtney ber of deaths has skyrock- Nunnally today, eted nationwide, Nunnally above, and in a

Chairperson for Goochland’s 2018 Relay for Life effort. To Goochland Relay coorganizer Connie Lewis, Johnston’s selection as chair is a perfect fit — even if it did take just a bit of nudging. “I was impressed by her humbleness,” said Lewis, noting that Johnston said that she would be honored to serve as Chair, unless there is someone more deserving. “I assured her that she is quite deserving!” said Lewis. These days Johnston, a social worker for Goochland County Social Services, still gets mammograms every three months and continues to urge others to make sure they are getting the screenings they need.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

June 14, 2018

Addiction continued from >1 managed to free herself from the grip of addiction and now works to help others avoid the kind of mistakes that nearly took her life. While she once spent her days searching for her next fix, she now runs Addiction Uncuffed, Inc, a program she founded to help share the lessons she learned on her road to recovery. As part of the program, she visits correctional facilities and speaks with law enforcement groups, urging those she meets to understand that most addicts are simply people who don’t know how to find—or can’t access — the help they need to break free. On June 16, Nunnally will be speaking at the Goochland County Library as part of an event sponsored by the local nonprofit Goochland ParentNet. Reached by phone earlier this month, Nunnally shared the details of her own struggle with addiction candidly, describing a childhood sent off course by the sudden death of her mother when

she was 5. The loss shattered her family, Nunnally said, and soon the once straight-A student found herself doing whatever she could to cope. She began hanging out with a different crowd at school, and saw casual drug use as a way to fit in. It was the start of a battle with addiction that would last for the next two decades and include many run-ins with the law. She says didn’t know the grip the drugs had on her until it was too late. “No one ever says that they want to be a heroin addict,” Nunnally said. “Everyone thinks that they aren’t going to be the one who gets addicted.” For Nunnally, it was a chance meeting with a police officer that finally helped her turn her life around. The officer, who had dealt with Nunnally before, told her he thought she was smart, and capable of far more than the life she was leading. Learning that Nunnally was pregnant, he also gave her an ultimatum: get clean, or he would take her to jail.

These days, with children of her own and years of recovery under her belt, Nunnally says the last thing in the world she wants is for her kids — or anyone else’s — to have to go through what she did. An even worse thought? That their lives, like so many others, could be cut short by drug use. “It’s more terrifying to know that if they do experiment with it, it could be the first and last time they do it,” Nunnally said. She said hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale, and also that law enforcement officers she speaks with will begin to see addicts are people who are struggling to find a way out addiction, and that officers can have a profound impact. “They don’t hear a lot of success stories,” she says. “But putting in that extra effort can save a life.” Courtney Nunnally will be speaking at 1 p.m. on June 16, and all are invited to attend. For more information, call (804) 556-4774 or visit the library at 3075 River Road West.

Snead, one of the Academy’s founders, who served as vicepresident of the school’s original Board of Trustees from 1898 until his death in 1925. Wood was presented with the award during Alumni Weekend in early May. In addition, because he received zero demerits all year, Wood was also recently honored at a special Zero Demerit Steak Dinner, served by mem-

Goochland residents ready to Relay once again By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Someday in the future — probably not next week or next year, but hopefully soon — human beings the world over are going to sit around and marvel at the miniscule number of people lost every year to cancer.

Maybe, much the way it has gone with air travel and cell phones, the novelty of a nearly cancer-free world will wear off quickly, and it will just become something else we take for granted. The tools and treatments we use today will seem primitive, the number of people lost staggering when compared to the new

WE WANT TO PUBLISH YOUR ISSUE-DRIVEN LETTERS

Back in August 2005, my son knew many young people with disabilities who live in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. From this concern “Are You Ready? Disaster Preparation for People with Disabilities” project was formed. It provided information on how to assemble your own emergency supply kit. I did not know then how valuable the workshops and training would be to me today. Since 2010, I have been an insulin dependent diabetic. What this means that I need my insulin daily to survive. My advice to anyone who has a medical condition that requires medications or therapy to survive to have an emergency plan and go bag with supplies. I am lucky that there is lots of information on what to include in my go bag through a list called “My Diabetes Emergency Plan” that was available on-line. I put my go bag together for not only me but for my family. Don’t wait you never know when the next disaster will strike.

Goochland sweeps singles, doubles state titles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Class 2 state singles and doubles trophies have made quite the home in the Goochland athletics trophy case. Those trophies will not be changing addresses for at least another season as the Bulldogs swept the singles and doubles

championships at Virginia Tech on June 7-8. In singles, Ryan Bernstine defeated Noah Surrette of George Mason in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1, before taking down Reed Crabtree of John Battle 6-3, 6-1 to win the singles title. On June 8, Bernstine and Max Presley teamed up to first defeat Ryan Aud and Ben

Knick of Wilson Memorial 7-6 (1), 6-2 prior to defeating Reed and Hudson Crabtree of John Battle in the final by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-3. “It went very well,” Goochland boys tennis coach Eric Schlaub said. “Max and Ryan were super excited. Knowing what the bracket was holding for us, Ryan wasn’t too concerned for the most

part. Reed was going to be some competition for him. We really weren’t sure how Max and Ryan were going to do in doubles. It was pretty nervewracking in the beginning. It was just good tennis.” While Bernstine had played against Reed Crabtree the day before the doubles final in the singles final, the Bulldogs pair was in the dark about what the

John Battle duo would be able to throw at them. “We knew Reed is a good player,” Schlaub said. “We knew that his brother was probably a good player as well. We had no idea it was going to come to that. You don’t know how it’s going to play out and we didn’t know how their season went. We had no clue what we were going to face. But, I knew if we

played our game and Max and Ryan did the best they could, we should, and did, walk away with the state title.” It was the first time that Ryan Bernstine had captured the singles title in his high school career, after finishing runner-up to his brother Chase last season. Bulldogs shutout against Page County in state semis By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland baseball was making solid contact against Page County pitcher Tristan Eppard at Calfee Park in the Class 2 state baseball semifinals on Friday. The problem was that those solid contact hits were generally hit right to where a Panthers defender was standing. The Bulldogs’ normally prolific offense was shut down by Eppard and Page County in a 5-0 final, ending Goochland’s season. “We thought we had a shot,” Bulldogs coach Wes Farkas said. “We knew Page was pretty good. I thought Tyler (Gentry) pitcher pretty well. They just had a few opportunistic hits when they needed them. Sometimes, in a tight ballgame, that’s all that you need.” Goochland got off on the right foot in the top of the first inning. Walker Murray reached with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Ramsbottom. After a John King groundout, Wyatt Murray worked a two-out walk and Goochland was threatening early. But, Tyler Ott struck out to end the inning and the opportunity. Page County scored two

Bulldogs continued from >8 for the doubles state title last season as well, but this year, Presley stepped in as Ryan’s partner as Chase graduated. Schlaub said that Ryan’s ability to coach on the court is something that allowed the

runs in the first and third innings in identical sequences on Gentry and the Bulldogs. A walk, followed by an RBI double to deep right-center, and then another run scoring on a passed ball. Those sequences allowed the Panthers to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs threatened against in the top of the fourth inning. Wyatt Murray reached when Park County’s third baseman couldn’t gather a groundball to begin the inning. After a fly out by Ott, Zac Harlow worked a walk to put two runners on. But, Gentry and Jackson Raines each flew out to end the inning. In the fifth, Cole Nuckols reached with a single, but was thrown out at second by a fielder’s choice off Walker Murray’s bat. Then, Ramsbottom grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to end that inning. Goochland left five runners on base, three of which were in scoring position. But, the Bulldogs just couldn’t find the gaps in the Page County defense. “I felt like the boys hit it pretty solid,” Farkas said. “Or, they’d make a great play. We hit the ball and gave a good effort today. That happens.” Page County added another

run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly that brought the game to the 5-0 final. It is the third time in the last three seasons that Goochland has qualified for the state tournament and will graduate an experience group of seniors who were a large part of that run. “We have a core group of seniors and they were sophomores when we started the run,” Farkas said. “That’s going to be hard to replace. Every year, it is, but this year was a close knit group and they had a good push. They pushed everyone else.” Farkas said he was proud of his team and the legacy of three state semifinals or finals in a row was something that is not easy to accomplish. The Bulldogs advanced to the state semifinals after Wyatt Murray struck out 13 batters in a one-hit shutout performance against Stuart’s Draft on June 5 at Goochland High School in a 1-0 win. “I knew that I was going to have to go out there and make some pitches and let my defense work behind me,” Murray said. The lone hit for Stuart’s Draft came in the top of the fourth inning, but two strikeouts from Murray stopped that opportunity. More often than not, the Cougars went down in order.

pair to thrive from the get-go. “Max is a good, strong, solid player and Ryan knows that,” Schlaub said. “With just a little bit of coaching from Ryan, when they’re on the court and telling Max to do this or that, they were able to come away with the win without a problem.” The wins were a little extra

special for Ryan as he got to play on the courts at Virginia Tech, the college that he has committed to for his college tennis career. “He’s super excited,” Schlaub said. “He said to me ‘yea, I’m ready for college now.’ He probably could in some regards. But, he was super excited and it was a bit surreal.

Goochland’s Walker Murray (22) had the two best chances to score runs for the Bulldogs against Page County in the Class 2 semifinals, but was unable to cross home plate.

“Wyatt had command from the beginning,” Bulldogs coach Wes Farkas said. “If you look at first-pitch strikes, there were probably only a handful of batters that he didn’t get a firstpitch strike on. That’s what we needed. He definitely showed up tonight.” Stuart Draft’s Trevor Craig was just as sharp as Murray,

allowing just two Goochland hits. But, one of those Goochland hits resulted in the eventual game-winning run. Walker Murray hit a oneout single in the bottom of the third inning. Joey Ramsbottom worked a walk to put two runners on. Goochland would later load

the bases after a sacrifice fly and a walk from Wyatt Murray. Stuart’s Draft’s catcher Henry Cooke attempted to throw out Walker Murray at third base, but the throw went wide and into left field, allowing him to score. That one run was enough on the day when Wyatt Murray was nearly untouchable.

He was really excited about going there.” Goochland’s tennis program has been on a roll recently, winning district, region and state titles in singles and doubles. Last season, the team advanced to the Class 2 final and finished runner-up in the state. “One is having good play-

ers,” Schlaub said. “Being good players, you have to be on the court three or four hours a day, which Ryan and Chase were. Max is on the court almost every day playing tennis. That’s how you get better. With some coaching and support, as long as you have dedicated players, you should be able to make it. This summer, there are all

kinds of (United States Tennis Association) tournaments and tennis club camps and things going on…if players go, and I always encourage my guys to go, there are these opportunities and if you play this summer and fall, you’ll be ready for the spring.”
