The resulting crash ejected Malina from the car and left her pinned underneath it. Maya managed to get herself out of the vehicle and somehow — many would later say miraculously — lift the car off of her sister, but it was immediately clear that Malina was severely injured.
For anyone who has ever been curious about the world of amateur radio, an upcoming event in Goochland could offer the perfect entree into the hobby. On June 23 and 24, the Goochland Amateur Radio Team will be demonstrating communications operations under emergency conditions at Company 5 Fire and Rescue at 2710 Fairground Road. Using emergency power supplies and temporary antennas, the ham operators will operate from 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. on Sunday. The event, referred to as Field Day, will

Goochland rescuers honored as ‘Shining Knights’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor
On the afternoon of March 30, 2017, 21-yearold Malina Richardson needed a hero. Instead, she got a whole team of them. That day, as she and her younger sister Maya made their way home from Radford University on Interstate 64, the two were forced off the road by a tractor trailer they had previously seen veering from side to side.

What the two didn’t know in that terrible, life-altering moment, was that the location where they had nearly lost their lives just may have played a critical role in their rescue. Having witnessed the accident, nurse Belinda Bowles, a Goochland resident, immediately stopped to help and call 911. Within minutes of receiving the call, first responders from Goochland were in route. Once on scene, incident commander Tony Gordon and the rest of the team quickly accessed Malina’s injuries, stabilized her and set off for the VCU trauma center in Richmond, the only Level 1 facility in the area and a location well-equipped to handle a trauma case as severe as the one they were facing. To Dr. Michel Aboutanos, Chief of the Trauma Center at VCU medical center, the efficiency and professionalism of the Goochland first responders was crucial to ensuring Malina’s survival.
“They were absolutely phenomenal,” Aboutanos said. “The way they stabilized her, how fast they were, how they knew exactly where to go—all of that was absolutely critical and they did a great job.” Though they would soon leave Malina in the capable hands of the VCU trauma team, it wasn’t the last time the first responders from Goochland would see her. Over the next several months, as Malina endured a grueling recovery process, they kept up with her progress and let her know she wasn’t alone. There was one more contribution as well: last March, on the day Malina was finally set to graduate from Radford, the Goochland team picked her up in an ambulance to transport her to her ceremony “It was so sweet,” Malina said, looking back on that ride. Knowing that she had so many people pulling for her, including the heroes who rescued her on that terrible day last year, made all the difference in the world, she said. For their heroic efforts,
the first responders from Goochland would go on to receive the Shining Knight honor from VCU Health System, an award that recognizes the incredible efforts of those who come together to save lives. It was actually the second time in three years that Goochland has been awarded the honor. To Goochland Deputy Chief of EMS Eddie Ferguson, one of several Goochland EMS personnel who was with Malina both at the accident scene and during her triumphant walk across the stage at Radford, her story is one local first responders won’t soon forget. “Taking her to her graduation just kind of closed the loop on everything for us,” Ferguson said, also crediting Malina for the incredible courage and perseverance she displayed throughout her recovery. “It takes a huge team of health care providers to do something like this,” Ferguson said, “but the patient has to have the will to survive. That’s what Malina had — she had the will to survive.”

Ham continued from >1 be one of many similar events held across the nation on that day, all staged with the goal of making radio contact with as many other operators around the country — and the world for that matter. To local amateur radio enthusiasts — or “hams as they are often known — the day offers the chance to spend time with other operators, meet newcomers, and help introduce amateur radio to a wider audience. If the words “ham radio bring to mind a bygone way of doing things now largely supplanted by new technology, you’re not exactly alone: a quick Google search turns up more than few blunt assessments from those who still — or once did — engage in the
hobby. Still, radio’s critical role in emergency response, as well as its appeal to those who enjoy science and engineering, have allowed it to survive the onslaught of newer, more modern modes of communication. While the Internet and mobile phones have no doubt lessened the need for radio’s use as a means of reaching far-flung locations, the lure is still very much there, said local ham operator Lee Maddox. “Each year we see an increase in the number of people getting their licenses, and there continues to be new people coming into the hobby, Maddox said. The fact that the FCC no longer requires those seeking an amateur radio operator’s license to be proficient in Morse code — that rule was changed over a decade ago — has allowed even more
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County of those who may have been on the fence to get involved. The reports of ham radio’s death, in other words, have been greatly exaggerated. To Madison Long, a local operator who expects to be at the Field Day event on June 23, one of the most interesting things for non-operators to witness may be the operators who communicate in Morse code, a method of communication using sequences of onoff tones that stand for letters and numbers. While it isn’t used as much anymore, Long said, watching someone who is proficient in it is always a treat. Goochland’s Amateur Radio Field Day will kick off at 8 a.m., though Maddox cautioned that the first few hours will likely involve mostly set up. For more information on the event, call (804) 784-5791.

Savoring the Local students offer examples of perseverance moments By Roslyn Ryan Editor
My poor mother. When I was growing up, she might have been forgiven for thinking she was raising the most illnessprone child ever born. Or maybe she was, in fact, on to me. She probably noticed that most of my ailments — stomachaches with no known cause, “fevers” that never seemed to register on a thermometer that otherwise worked just fine — appeared to wax and wane with the school schedule, and that I was rarely under the weather in the summertime once the swim-
ming pool opened and the familiar sound of the ice cream truck drifted down the street. Mystery illnesses were not my only tactic for avoiding the classroom. Any inclement weather brought the hope of a surprise cancellation, and full-on blizzards were prayed for with near-religious fervor. After a good snow, my sister and I decried any attempt to return to school until the very last flake had melted (which, we insisted, could not be independently confirmed until at least June). I was thinking of all of this last week after hearing about three of our local young scholars — Aaron
Brown, De’Andre Robinson and Janessa Coles — a trio that holds the incredible distinction of having made it from kindergarten through eighth grade without missing one day of school. Yes, you read that right: not one sick day — or even “sick” day — in nine full school years. That’s nine years of never succumbing to the sniffles, playing hooky to go to the movies, or sitting out an instructional day because of a moderately stubbed toe (that last one may have actually been another from my please-let-me-stay-home playbook — not proud of it, just saying). If you re keeping count, that s around 1,620 days of perfect atten-
dance, a record few could match and certainly something of which to be very proud. As often as our society celebrates our superstar athletes and shimmering celebrity socialites, we may sometimes be guilty of overlooking those who are accomplishing amazing things far outside of the limelight. These three shining stars have certainly proven that they possess the discipline, fortitude and maturity to ensure success in whatever they choose to take on. If this recent triumph is any indication of what’s to come, we’re looking forward to seeing what they accomplish in the coming years.
On Father’s Day, memories of a very special delivery By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
It had been a rough Saturday. To be honest, it had been a difficult pregnancy for my former wife as she entered the final days before delivering twins. She suffered the entire day with what surely seemed like labor pains, but her doctor insisted that we weren’t there yet — just rest and be patient. The hours passed agonizingly slow, but we finally decided to call it a day and hope for a better outcome tomorrow. While Mom took a
shower, I escaped to check email on the computer. It wasn’t a scream that alerted me. It more resembled a low tone wailing. Had there been time, I would surely have placed two and two together, but reasonable thought escaped as I hurried toward the bathroom. It didn’t take a genius to realize that what we thought were labor pains, were indeed just that, and now we were in full delivery mode. I ran for the phone and headed back to the bathroom. Now, I’m not sure how many babies this 911 operator had delivered, but, judging by her calm advice

and instruction, I’m assuming the answer is many. She walked me through a process that seemed unreal for me, and, minutes later, my daughter Emma was wrapped in a towel and placed strategically on her mother’s stomach, umbilical cord still attached. At the same time Emma arrived, five firemen made their way down the hall and peered into the bathroom. They looked relived to see the baby, safe and sound, delivered and ready for transport. “It looks like you’ve already done all the work,” one of them said with
a smile. “Not really, she did most of it, and there’s one more on the way,” I quipped. Their look of relief suddenly soured and they began preparing for delivery number two. Just in time, the rescue squad arrived and the firemen and I were replaced with more qualified folks who seemed to know much more than I about these things. Standing in my underpants, I was still in sort of a state of shock from the first images I encountered in what seemed like a dream world. see Father’s Day > 11

Sometimes it’s good to just sit back and soak in the moment. A few weeks ago I was heading to my hometown of Houston, Texas, for a few days for the purpose of attending my nephew Mason’s high school graduation. That went ahead as planned. It was a great trip as a whole, but there were several moments along the way when I found myself pausing and just thinking, savor this. The first moment happened at the graduation. A sea of purple caps and gowns filled the arena of the coliseum where Mason’s graduation was held, but, once we found him in the crowd, I couldn’t unsee him and keep looking over at him. I listened to the speakers and the names being called, and occasionally my attention was drawn to the other graduates and how they were behaving. With a class of more than 800 students, it probably seemed like a great deal to sit through for some of them. Some looked anxious, some excited, some bored, etc. Having his name called near the middle of the pack, Mason was a combination of looking bored and laughing with friends seated nearby. My oldest sister and I, his aunts, made it our mission to let him know we were watching and proud of and happy for him. On most of the occasions I caught him looking up where our group was seated, I gave a not-so-subtle wave (OK, waved like a maniac) just to see him smile. In between the videos and the hundreds of photos I took, I made sure to just sit there at one point and enjoy it – revel in his accomplishment and the potential of a new chapter of his life ready to be written. As fate would have it, my trip coincided with the arrival of my friend Kristin, who moved to Turkey with her husband a few years ago but was coming to visit family. American Legion Post 201 prepares for new season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The campus at Powhatan High School was largely quiet on June 14, save for a few people running on the track. However, the baseball field was coming back to life as American Legion Post 201 continued to prepare for the
upcoming summer season. Post 201 made a run in last season’s District 11 playoffs, all the way to the quarterfinals against Post 125. The season ended in a 13-11 loss at Shepherd Stadium, but 201 carries a lot of that momentum into the 2018 campaign. “For the returners, we have
those guys who have been there and the opportunity to play (in the playoffs),” Post 201 head coach Eric Mead said. “As far as talent goes, I think we’re as talented this year and I think we’re a little better on defense. We’re sitting on 12 pitchers in the bullpen this year. We’ve got a little going into this year and I feel really good about it.”
Post 201 has eight returning players from that team that made the quarterfinals a season ago: Zach Frame, Austin Nicholas, Cale Agee, Jacob Beil, Hunter Montgomery, Josh Dawson, Trey Johnson and Adam Seal. Jacob Frame, Owen Agee, Cody Willis, Thomas Jordan, Sam Reid, Carter Minnick,
Reilly Dickerson, Austin Rose and Tommy Preston round out the Post 201 roster. Preston, Willis and Beil are fresh off the state-playoff run from the Powhatan varsity baseball team. Montgomery and Jacob Frame also a Powhatan products. Rose, a Goochland High School player, played in the
state semifinals with the Bulldogs. Minnick, Reid and Jordan played come to Post 201 with experience from James River’s baseball team. Louisa High School is represented in Nicholas and Owen Agee. see Legion>8

Roundup: Jacobsen named new Bulldogs volleyball coach By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s girls volleyball team was in need of a new head coach after longtime coach Jennifer Erixon stepped down from her position at the end of the 2017-18 academic year. Enter Rachel Jacobsen, who heard about the job when she was applying for a teaching job with Goochland County Public Schools. “I had actually applied to Goochland County my first year of teaching and my second year when I moved to the Richmond area,” she said. “I taught fourth grade this past year, and elementary just wasn’t for me, so I re-applied to Goochland and they had the volleyball coaching position open this time around.” Jacobsen, who attended Randolph-Macon College, spent time in Ashland with a Goochland County High School student, who gave their recommendation to Goochland to bring Jacobsen on as the coach of the Bulldogs. “That’s kind of how it fell into my lap,” she said. This is Jacobsen’s first high school head coaching position, but she has coached club and travel ball teams previous-
Legion continued from >7 Johnson is currently on Amelia’s baseball team and Dickerson attends Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. Dawson, an Amelia product, just completed his freshman season as a member of the Roanoke College baseball team. Cale Agee, another Maroons player, is from Louisa. Zach Frame, a Powhatan
ly, such as at Fredericksburg Juniors Volleyball Club and at an 18 Metro team at Richmond Volleyball club, to name a few. Jacobsen brings experience from playing volleyball at Brooke Point High School in Stafford as well as four years on the Yellow Jackets volleyball team. “I started playing my freshman year in high school and fell in love with the sport,” she said. “I was coaching and playing and I went to RandolphMacon to play. I played on the team all four years, but had to sit my sophomore year due to a knee injury. Other than that, it was all go. I loved every minute of it and I had a great time. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the team.” In her freshman season, Jacobsen played in 13 matches for Randolph-Macon at the outside hitter position and recorded 15 kills, 40 assists and 16 digs. After losing her sophomore season due to the injury, she came back as a junior and appeared in 17 matches for the Yellow Jackets. She had nine kills and had 13 digs. Her senior season, she appeared in 15 matches for Randolph-Macon and had 14 kills, two assists and one ace.
That season, the Yellow Jackets advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in the history of the team. “I’m really glad to have that connection to RandolphMacon now,” she said. “They’ve done so much for me. I’ve gone to my assistant coaches for workouts, I’ve talked to the head coach about camps we can do with them in the future. It’s really great to have that connection.” As Jacobsen is familiar with the Richmond volleyball circuit, she said she was certainly aware of the success that Erixon and the Bulldogs have built for the program. “I’m really excited about it,” she said. “There’s so much room for growth. I’m really excited to embrace the past and work with them toward a future program that can continue that legacy of success as we work together to build the program.” Jacobsen said the first open gym of the season for Goochland had over 30 girls in attendance. “Since then, we’ve been working out and playing volleyball,” she said. “We’re doing all the things we should be doing to get in shape for the season coming up. I definitely want to continue working with
the high school girls, but also the middle school girls to keep building the program and get everyone touches on the ball over the summer and work hard to get ready.” Jacobsen had the chance to speak with Erixon on the phone about the program and their coaching styles and said that the two coaches are very similar when it comes to their mindsets as coaches, which had led to a smooth transition for the Bulldogs players. “I talked to her about how she ran things and how things went,” she said. “I think it’ll be a good jumping off point for the girls, since we run things in a similar manner. With my college background, I have a lot of experience and different ways of doing things. Bill Rodgers, the head coach at Randolph-Macon, taught me a lot about the technical aspects of the game, looking for the little things that might be causing bigger issues. So, that experience and having played in high school myself, I think it’ll be a great experience for me and for the girls to grow together and work hard this season.” Jacobsen’s primary goal the season is to build a solid relationship with not only the players, but the county itself.
“I really want to make Goochland a home and show them that I’m ready to work and I hope that they are too,” she said. “I’m hoping for a good season and everyone will be happy to work together and build that family camaraderie.” Jacobsen will get her first taste of high school coaching action on Aug. 22 at Essex.
Goochland’s spring sports teams were frequent choices on the All-Region 2A and AllClass 2 state honors teams. In baseball, Goochland’s Wyatt Murray, John King and Tyler Ott were all named firstteam all-region. Murray was named Region 2A Player of the Year and Goochland head coach Wes Farkas was the coach of the year. Goochland resident Cole Ragone of Maggie Walker was also a first-team selection. Tyler Gentry and Joey Ramsbottom were secondteam all-region picks. Murray was further honored on the All-Class 2 state team as he was named secondteam at both pitcher and first base. Ragone was a first-team allstate selection.
Benedictine athletic director and wrestling coach Ryan Hall has resigned his posts at the school as he has accepted the position of athletic director at Mayville State University in North Dakota. Hall’s last day was June 15. Hall was with the Cadets for nine years and took over as athletic director five years ago. As coach of the wrestling team, he won four state titles and produced 19 individual state champions and 12 AllAmericans. Benedictine’s football team won two state titles and its fishing team won one title during his tenure as athletic director. Assistant coach David Yost has taken over as head coach for the Cadets wrestling team.
graduate, just finished his freshman year as a Hornet at Shenandoah. Not only does Post 201 have players that are experienced in the American Legion playoffs, but also from the Virginia High School League playoffs as well. Powhatan and Goochland both qualified for the VHSL state tournament. Dickerson and the Knights also qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association
state playoffs in Division III this season. Louisa advanced to the Region 4B semifinals and James River made it to the Region 6B semifinals. “They all got to play against some good talent,” Mead said. “They got to play against some really talented ball clubs. You bring those schools together out here…it’s a good thing.” Mead noted that while those longer playoff runs for some of the teams meant that
some players were late arriving to the Post 201 practice, the players have come together quickly on the outset of the season. Overall, Mead said that he’s confident in how his team is looking at this point in the season. “We feel really good,” he said. “We have three very good players who have come to us from James River, a catcher from Goochland who is going to be a three-year guy. I’m feel-
ing very good.” Post 201 will begin its season at home at Powhatan High School against Post 186 on June 23. After the opener, Post 201 will host games on June 27, July 3, July 5, July 12 and July 14. All home games are played at Powhatan High School. All the home games will start at 7 p.m. Post 201 will be on the road on June 30, July 1, July 7, July 10, July 16 and July 18.
Mead said that the goal of the season is always to advance to the Legion World Series, but the focus will be on winning baseball games and continuing to improve. “We always want to get better every single year, which we’ve done over the past four years,” he said. “Certainly, states are something that we could get ourselves into this year. Our goal is the World Series. Our objective is to win baseball games.”
In softball, Goochland’s McKenzie Reams and Carleigh Gilstrap were named first-team All-Region 2A. Reams was also honored as second-team all-state. Goochland’s Jaylene Lopez and Claire Anderson were both named second-team AllRegion 2A for girls soccer. Zach Gordon was a secondteam all-region pick in boys soccer for the Bulldogs.

GEF raises $45K for schools Raising money to support Goochland County Schools is serious business — but that doesn’t mean it can’t occasionally be fun, too. The Goochland Education Foundation held its annual gala in April, once again offering attendees the chance to enjoy an evening of casino games, dinner, dancing while supporting local students. By night’s end, the event — which drew a near-capacity crowd of over 200 revelers — had raised over $45,000. “It was exciting to see so many people wanting to support our mission while having so much fun,” said GEF Executive Director Cyndy Brown. “The funds raised will help us support and implement innoTUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 ESPN

often looked at it as more of having a decent pair of hands that could handle slippery items than delivering a baby. But, the story remains and comes to my mind on almost every Father’s Day, and reminds that being a father and not performing that one special act is what makes being a dad special. It’s the days since, and before, that event spent with my children are the memories that last a lifetime, and the confusion and spontaneous events of that Saturday night are just a portion of a collection of special moments that make Father’s Day a blessing. Moments continued from >6 time, I made sure to carve out some time with my friend, who I feel like I see more now that she has left the country than I did when we just lived in different states. We had a great night of laughing, talking, catching each other up on our lives and talking about what is next. And at the end of the night, we shared a hug. You know the kind – the

I even took photos for the girl across the aisle who was witnessing the same natural wonder without the same vantage point. And, for once, my phone did not disappoint with the photos I was taking. But, after the photos were snapped and the plane was beginning to leave, the amazing cloud formation behind,

I actually reminded myself to put the device down for just a minute and simply live in the moment. And it was glorious. I love that life is filled with these moments – that the ordinary can be so extraordinary when your heart is open to them. The big moments are great. But the little ones that make everything feel right in the world, those are worth savoring, too. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.
