Three families are mourning the loss of loved ones this week after a tragic incident on Route 288 on June 27. According to Sgt. Keeli Hill with the Virginia State Police, Linli Xu, 25, of Midlothian, was travelling on 288 shortly before 9 p.m. that night when she struck a deer. Seeing her vehicle disabled in the roadway, Justin C. Ransone, 41, of Midlothian, Va., and Amy Lee Abbott, 45, of Glen Allen pulled over to help. According to Hill, the three were standing near Xu’s car when they were struck by another driver attempting to avoid hitting the vehicle. All three were pronounced dead on the scene. The driver who hit them, Claire C. Carr, 53, of North Chesterfield, declined medical attention at the scene. Hill confirmed last week that charges are pending against Carr, and that the crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Crash Reconstruction Team. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help raise money for Abbott’s two young sons.

Game of Rhizomes: It’s time to divide and conquer irises

: When should I prune my forsythias and azaleas?
: As a rule of thumb, it’s best to prune soon after the bloom begins to fade. This would be for your forsythias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and lilacs. Camellias and gardenias should also be pruned soon after flowering as well. However, “late bloomers” such as hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, and Crape Myrtle should be pruned in late winter while dormant. The handy A Guide to Successful Pruning, Shrub Pruning Calendar for Virginia is available on line from Virginia Tech at http:.//pubs.ext. vt.edu/430/430-462/430-462. h html.
cucumbers last year, you’ll probably be picking cucumbers soon. Yet, as the months pass, and you’re still not getting good sized cucumbers, you’re probably having a pollination issue. Pollination is impaired when the temperatures climb into the mid-90s or if there has been excessive rain or cold. You may have to hand pollinate your plants with a small paint brush or cotton swab this year.
Odd time to mention it, but it’s not too early to begin making plans for next year’s harvest. You can start by planting more native flowering plants to attract pollinators. Easy perennials such as cone flower, bee balm, and butterfly weed can be begun this year to attract next year’s pollinators. If you need some ideas,

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Joanna Englert, and her brother, Gordon Englert. Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Marian Turner, brother, Harold
Englert, sister-in-law Darline Englert, and niece, Donalda Chumney. Audrey grew up in Goochland and relocated to live with family in Schenectady, New York in 1955, where she worked for AT&T for over thirty years. She departed this life peacefully, at the age of 83, on Saturday, September 2, 2017. Audrey greeted everyone she met with a gentle kindness and a wonderful sense of humor. She was beloved and her spirit of generosity extended to all who knew her. ELEANOR A. REED Eleanor Ann “Elly” Reed died Thursday, June 21, 2018, at her home in Crozier. She was born May 26, 1940, in Breslau, Germany. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Poulson C. Reed; daughters, Diana Galvin Adams and Christine Iacovo (Fred); sons, Thomas J. Galvin III (Jessica) and the Reverend Poulson C. Reed Jr. (Megan); daughter-inlaw, Susan E. Reed; grandchildren, Claire Adams, Sheldon E. Reed, Mary Mayken Reed,

Life brought Elly much joy in simple pleasures. She was blessed with an abundant sense of gratitude and the gift of quick wit. She loved to lighten any moment with her wry humor and loosely translated German sayings. Her heritage was important to her and she passed on wonderful
holiday traditions, recipes and baking memories. Throughout her life, she shared with many the pleasure of an authentic home cooked Bavarian meal, complete with singing and a polka lesson if you were lucky. Elly had a great love of animals and donated regularly to F.L.A.G. animal rescue in Goochland, Virginia. She knitted and crocheted beautifully, creating treasured keepsakes of elaborate layettes and baby clothes for anyone she remotely knew who was expecting. She will be especially remembered for her love of her family, the joy she took in her grandchildren and her generous spirit. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 27, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oilville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Elly’s memory to the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund. ‘Instagrannies’ offer new way to look at ‘old’ age By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Recently, on an otherwise ordinary Thursday afternoon, during an otherwise ordinary lunch break, I found myself surfing mindlessly through the day’s headlines on my phone. I scrolled past sports scores, entertainment news, and the 15 or so headlines related to Cheeseplategate (the ridiculous, yet somehow real, story of a White House Press Secretary being asked to leave a restaurant when all she had done was order a meal), and was about to start reading email when I saw it, a headline as worthy of a second look as any I’ve seen in quite a while: “The glamorous gran-
nies of Instagram.” Tell me reader, please — is there any way you are not clicking on this? If you can’t manage to guess from the headline, the story was about a new wave of tech-savvy, confident, beautiful women who are taking the social media app Instagram by storm. The fact that many of them are in their 70s and 80s is, if not exactly beside the point, at least not the whole story. A word of caution: the internet is a wild place, one that has managed only a few decades removed from its invention to chuck quite a number of formally iron-clad social conventions out right out the proverbial window. The so-called “Instagrannies,” in other words, do not really appear all
that concerned about what society thinks of them. How else to explain Baddie Winkle, the Kentucky-based octogenarian who started using Instagram after her great-granddaughter snapped a funny photo of her, and now has over 3.5 million followers? Her photos are beautiful — if a tad shocking, occasionally, especially to those who think approaching 90 means a mandatory frumpy housecoat — and a glorious reminder that, in this day and age, we are all allowed to mature in the manner we see fit. The majority of this new generation of seniors, or course, isn’t shouting quite as loud as Baddie Winkle, but they are blazing new trails nonetheless.
You see them all around Goochland, people in their 70s, 80s and 90s who resolutely refuse to consider the idea that the Golden Years should be spent in a porch rocker or on a shuffleboard court. They are teaching, learning, volunteering, taking up new hobbies, and even starting new careers. They understand and embrace technology, and they are showing the generations behind them what it means to take an active role in the community you call home. If you know a senior like this, thank them. Appreciate them. Learn from them. Using the example they set, we can understand that we all have the ability to chart our own courses into the future, and that the years ahead may just be the best yet.

Letter to the Editor Staying safe: A wake-up call for our community Dear Editor, Last week a protective Goochland mom was forced to shoot a stranger who was forcing his way into her home to get to her 14 year old daughter. Thank goodness that brave mom was equipped to stop the creep. He flew from New Zealand after meeting the young teen online through a game ap. The ap had 200,000 participants and another 45,000 viewers, some of whom are predators looking for victims. Yes, children are vulnerable, even in our county, in a myriad of ways that most folks don’t even contemplate. We have pedophiles online, viewing and sharing child pornography. We are getting ready to build hotels in our growing community. With hotels comes human trafficking. This is not hyperbole Goochland, these are facts that are known to our law enforcement. So, what can be done in a community that wants to protect our most vulnerable citizens? First, we must shine a light in a world where a very dark culture is lurking, relying on our ignorance as their cover. The Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (SOVA ICAC) is a multi-jurisdictional task force available to law enforcement. SOVA ICAC is one of 61 Task Forces throughout the U.S. (for more information go to sovaicac.org). Goochland was approached by Bedford County Sherriff’s office, the Regional Lead for SOVA ICAC, several years ago to participate. Our Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney, Mike Caudill, immediately did the necessary paperwork to join SOVA ICAC and has actively sought help in forming a Task Force in our County. He has been unable to get the help. There is a cost involved. There is a requirement to have a dedicated Investigator to work on the ICAC Task Force. that they have hosted about half of the states so far with a goal of inviting local representatives from every state. The Virginia delegation of over 200 attendees was the largest group so far. The Goochland County
Supervisors also enjoyed a tour of the White House prior to the meeting and left DC with a list of contacts for every federal agency. Open lines of communication between local, state and federal governments are a critical aspect of good government that citizens have come to expect and certainly deserve. The Virginia IGA conference
in Washington, DC made unprecedented strides in this area by enhancing direct communication between the federal government and the local government that serves the citizens of Goochland County. Supervisor Susan Lascolette is currently serving her second term as a representative for District 1.

American Legion Post 201’s Sam Reed (21) had an RBI single during Post 201’s five-run first inning against Post 361 on June 27. Reed scored a run in the first inning as well for Post 201 in the loss to Post 361.
Post 201’s big-inning bug bites them in loss to 361 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It was a common theme last season for American Legion Post 201’s Senior baseball team. The defense would allow one big inning to the opposing team, which would offset any offense that Post 201 had produced to that point, or would produce the rest of the game.
That bug appeared again for Post 201 in its second game of the season on June 27 against Post 361 at Powhatan High School. Post 361 scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 9-6 win. “Last year, we struggled where we gave up those big innings in the middle of the game,” coach Eric Mead said.
“We gave up seven today, right in the middle. We’ve got to figure out how to eliminate that and lower the damage in those middle innings.” Post 361 got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Post 201 had a big inning of its own in the bottom of the first.
Carter Mimmick opened the inning with a walk and reached second base on a passed ball. Two batters later, Cody Willis worked a walk to put two runners on. Then, Josh Dawson drove Mimmick in with a single to tie the game. Willis stole home to give Post 201 a 2-1 lead.
Adam Seal then brought Dawson home with a double to make it 3-1 Post 201. Sam Reed continued the scoring with an RBI single to make it 4-1. Reed would score on a wild pitch later in the inning for a 5-1 lead. Tommy Preston was the starting pitcher for Post 201 and had a strong showing
through the first three innings. After allowing the one run in the first, Preston sat Post 361 down in order in the second and faced just four batters in the top of the third. Post 201 added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Trey Johnson worked a see Legion>8

Roundup: Goochland YMCA takes down Wembly By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland YMCA’s swim team continued its winning ways with an 887.5-689.5 win over Wembly on June 27 at Wembly. Sasha Babic was a quadwinner for Goochland, taking home wins in the 100 free, 50 breast, 50 free and the mixed 200 free relay. Nathaniel Harris also won four events against Wembly in the 50 free, 25 back, 25 fly and mixed 100 free relay. Eleanor Martin won the 100 free, 50 fly, 50 free and was on the winning mixed 200 free
relay team. Abby Pillion also grabbed four wins, taking home top honors in the 100 free, 50 fly, 50 free and was on the winning mixed 200 free relay team. Andrea, Anneliese and Annika Rogerson all won four events for the Manta Rays. Andrea won the 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free and was on the winning 200 free relay team. Anneliese won the 100 breast, 50 fly, 50 free and was on the winning 200 free relay team. Annika rounded it out with wins in the 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free and the 200 free relay team.
David Saakian won the 50 free, 25 breast, 25 free and was on the winning 100 free relay team. Jessica Valdez was the final quad winner for Goochland against Wembly, winning the 100 free, 100 breast, 50 fly and mixed 200 free relay. Seki Babic was a tri-winner, taking home wins in the 50 back, 50 breast and 50 free. Joseph Hardman also grabbed three wins over Wembly in the 100 free, 50 back and mixed 200 free relay. Ryan Johnson took home three wins for the Manta Rays in the 50 breast, 50 fly and the mixed 200 free relay.
Luke Pushinksy won his age group’s 50 free, 25 back and was on the winning 100 free relay team. Avetis Saakian was a triwinner against Wembly, winning the 100 free, 50 breast, 50 free and the mixed 200 free relay. Mia Valdez also finished with three wins, in the 100 free, 50 fly and the mixed 200 free relay. Goochland hosted The Federal Club on July 3 and will host Antioch on July 11.

one-out walk, followed by a single by Austin Nichols and a walk by Mimmick. Cale Agee grounded into a fielder’s choice, which scored Johnson to make it 6-1. The fourth inning, however, was the fateful big inning for Post 361. Preston walked the leadoff hitter, but got a strikeout and a groundout to put two outs on the board. However, the next seven batters reached base, four of which were by walks. Preston was replaced by Seal after the second of that string of batters, but Seal was unable to get that last out in the inning. Zach Frame entered the game and got a groundout to third that ended the inning, but the damage had been done as seven runs were on the board and the game went from a 6-1 Post 201 lead to an 8-6 deficit. “Tommy Preston pitched
Goochland’s John King and Wyatt Murray were both selected to the team. Murray started for the Red Team at first base and batted ninth in the order. At the end of the night, however the Red Team fell to the Blue Team 6-4 in the exhibition match.
VHSCA
Goochland’s Wes Farkas coached the Red Team at the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star baseball game on June 25, which was played at Veterans Memorial Park at James Madison Jamari University.
Legion
American Legion Post 201’s Josh Dawson continued his early-season hot streak at the plate against Post 361 with an RBI single.
Baylor was named first-team All-Metro by the Richmond Times-Dispatch in baseball. Baylor hit .482 with 35 runs, eight home runs and 28 RBIs for the Cadets, in addition to stealing 25 bases. Cadets pitcher Casey Green was named second team.
a good game and he was at his pitch limit,” Mead said. “We went with Adam Seal and this time he just struggled to find the plate. I thought Zach Frame did a good job of coming in and getting out of the jam that he was in.” Mead pointed out, though, the seven runs allowed were compounded by the lack offense following the five-run first inning for Post 201. Even in the one-run third inning for Post 201, the bases were loaded twice in the inning and Post 201 was only able to push one run across. After Post 361’s offensive fireworks in the fourth, Post 201 had only three batters reach base for the remainder of the game. Nichols and Mimmick reached with one out in the fifth, but that chance was erased by a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. A 4-6-3 double play ended a chance in the bottom of the sixth after Dawson reached with a one-out single. Post 361 added another run

While the offense, outside of the first, was disappointing for Post 201, Mead believes that his team is full of hitters who are dangerous each time they’re up at the plate. “This team is full of great hitters,” he said. “I think it’s more mentality than ability. I think it’s staying strong and continuing to press even when you have a big lead.” Post 201 split its most recent two games. On June 30, Post 201 fell to Post 284 at Shepherd Stadium by a score of 9-8. Post 201 outhit Post 284 10-4, but errors and mental lapses prevented Post 201 from getting the win. On July 1, Post 201 routed Post 125 12-2. Dawson went 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs against Post 125. Post 201 hosted Post 137 on July 3 and will host Post 175 on July 5.
