T
hirty eight minutes. From start to finish, that was the length of time it took for
demolition crews last Friday afternoon to turn the former Goochland County Animal Shelter into a pile of rubble. Those who watched it fall could be forgiven for cheering its demise—the cramped, poorly functioning facility had long been a source of consternation for those who worked there and county residents alike, and was in violation of several state regulations. Even better news for shelter employees and Goochland animal lovers? Less than 100 yards away from the demolition site on Friday, construction continued on the county’s spacious, state-of-the-art new animal shelter and adoption facility, scheduled to open in late fall of this year. The county is currently making use of a temporary shelter facility set up at the Central High School complex on Dogtown Road.

As residential growth continues at a steady pace in Goochland, county leaders find themselves working to ensure that Goochland’s capital facilities keep pace with the growing demand. One issue they face, however, stems from areas of the county where subdivisions have been approved but not yet built. During the July 3 Board of Supervisors meeting, board members were presented with an update on the current number of approved home lots in the county — 3,191, according to Goochland Director of Community Development Jo Ann Hunter. While around 60 percent of those lots — about 1,700 — are in age restricted communities — the rest could potentially be home sites for families with children. And while those homes could be built at any time, due to

Those planning to float the James urged to use caution, read signage By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Backpacks of Love is a local non-profit dedicated to ending hunger for children in Goochland, Va. The organization works with school staff to identify children in need and discretely places a bag of food in their backpack for the weekend.
Goochland rescue crews responded Sunday night to a report of tubers stranded on the James River, the third time in three weeks rescuers have been called out for such an incident according to Goochland Fire/EMS Chief Bill MacKay. On July 14, in what was surely a rarity for the department, rescuers commandeered a train to help retrieve an individual who found themselves out on the river far longer than expected, made their way to a bank and onto the train tracks, then called for help after falling and sustaining an injury. MacKay said fire-rescue immediately stopped train
traffic on the tracks, then commandeered a train that was in the area to bring the individual to the nearest crossing, located at Irwin Road, where an ambulance was waiting. While none of these incidents ended with serious injury or loss of life, MacKay cautioned that failing to adequately plan for time spent on the river can be very dangerous. The first thing he urges people to remember? “The river does not follow Route 6,” MacKay said, explaining that many people grossly underestimate the time it will take to travel from one point to another. MacKay urges anyone planning a river trip to read the signs posted at every land-
ing spot that detail distance, paddle and float times for various river trips. Included on the list are: Columbia to Cartersville Distance: 9.5 miles Paddle Time: 5 to 6 hours Float Time: 7 to 8 hours Cartersville to Westview Distance: 5 miles Paddle Time: 2 to 3 hours Float Time: 4 to 5 hours Westview to Maidens Distance: 12.5 miles Paddle Time: 7 to 9 hours Float Time: 9 to 12 hours Please note, these times are approximate and are dependant on water level, current, and a number of other factors.

few dozen devoted local food fans gathered at Goochland’s Kindred Spirits Brewing Company last Sunday evening, raising a glass in celebration of regional fare. The Celebration of the Season event, held as a fundraiser for Center for Rural Culture, offered the chance to sample dishes created with fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, and each paired with a special beer. Held on the West Creek brewery’s expansive deck, the evening also featured live music from Bryan Fisher and Tevis Marshall. According to organizer Aynsley Fisher, the purpose of the evening was to showcase “the bounty of the summer harvest,” as well as to introduce more people to the mission of
the CRC, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving rural culture in the Central Virginia Piedmont.. “We really wanted to make it all about the food,” said Fisher, explaining that the idea first came about thanks to her friendship with Dave Booth, a celebrated local chef who

Contributed report
This time of year, as gardens all over Goochland bring forth a bounty of fresh, delicious produce, many home gardeners often end up with more vegetables and fruit than they can use. What to do with all those cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, beans, peas, okra, and melons? Consider donating surplus produce to the GoochlandCares Food Pantry or other local food pantries. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that one in six Americans struggle with hunger, including children who may not have access to fresh and healthy food during the summer months when school is out.
In Goochland, nearly 1,800 senior citizens, disabled persons, adults, and children face hunger every day, often skipping meals. The Federation of Virginia Food Banks considers Western Goochland County to be a “food desert” -- an area where populations live more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. For these individuals, the only chance to get food is often through food stamps, church pantries and non-profit organizations like GoochlandCares. The benefits of providing fresh vegetables and fruits to local food pantries are many. Many people want a wellbalanced diet but oftentimes the less nutritious items are cheaper, have a longer shelf life, and can be stretched over multiple meals. For families who live in poverty, the three most requested items are dairy products, lean meats, and fresh fruits & vegetables, which all

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Years ago, reading opened door to new world By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I don’t have children, but I do know quite a few of them, and I always find it a treat to ask them about what they’ve been up to (kids, as you probably know, are refreshingly candid and often get right to the point— I like this). The other day, in fact, I had the chance to ask the 8-year-old son of a good friend how he was enjoying his summer. As I soon learned, there had been plenty of pool time, lots of video games, and one visit to the dentist that he clearly would have preferred to skip. I asked about his upcoming birthday, and what books were on his summer reading list. And that was when it came: the blank, then befuddled, look.
As it turned out, he didn’t have a summer reading list — not even a suggested one. He didn’t know what a reading list was, or, furthermore, why anyone would want to read when they didn’t have to. I have to admit that my heart broke just a little when he told me that. A quick note: as a not-parent/ not-teacher, I m not passing judgment here. Like so many other children I know, this little boy is kind and inquisitive, energetic but also mindful of rules (most of the time). His parents take pains to make sure his young life is full of enriching activities, and screen time is carefully limited. I also cannot even fathom what it must be like to try and get a reluctant child to read when so many other tempting forms of enter-
tainment (Social media! Gaming! On demand everything!) are just a click away. And yet ... I will happily wear the label of “old-fashioned,” but I couldn’t imagine my childhood without books. Learning to read wasn’t easy, but once I did it seemed that all the initial struggle was forgotten. There was suddenly a world open that had once been closed, a portal to escape for an entire afternoon into a place totally different from my day-to-day existence. I wasn’t the kid reading Tolstoy, for sure. Then, as now, my attention span was spasmodic at best. But every once in awhile I would unearth, or be given, a book that would grab hold of my imagination and simply refuse to let go. Those were the stories that had you reading into the night,
stopping only when you physically couldn’t keep your eyes open any more, the ones you hated to finish because the journey was so much fun. I am sad to say I don’t read nearly as much today as I did when I was young. But some of the books I read then still color the way I see I see the world. I don t fault children on summer break for eschewing a musty paperback in favor of an interactive video game or a barrage of unhinged celebrity tweets. The latter two are instantly gratifying, after all, the entertainment equivalent of a quick-release drug. If the summer reading list is a thing of the past, maybe there is a reason. But I’m still mighty sad to see it go.
Octogenarians prove that friendship is a lifetime By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
While many of us will be blessed to live into our 80s, there are two women — both 87 now, with one preparing for her 88th birthday — who have been best friends for eight decades. Sally Scaggs and my mother became friends as little girls in the
1930s in a coal camp in southwestern West Virginia. They have a remarkable bond and incredible memories that they still enjoy sharing. Sally and her husband left the hills of West Virginia in the 1950s for him to pursue employment opportunities in the steel mills in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Despite the distance — and the

Sally braved the new driving skills Mom acquired as a teenager. They would go skating and both liked to dance. Mom has several black

A truck, a treat, a lesson learned By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m not as tolerant as I used to be, and things that in the past never annoyed me now tend to irritate in varying degrees. As I watched a World Cup Match on television, the constant sound of a bad version of “Turkey in the Straw” played over and over again from a loud speaker mounted on an ice cream truck. It certainly wasn’t the same popsicle man that I remember from youth. The truck was new and shiny, bright blue and highly polished. But somehow the absence of that puff of ozone that shot out of the tiny door each time the man opened it for another popsicle made the latest version seem too sterile and modernized for me. When it comes to popsicle trucks, I should be the last person on earth to reminisce fondly on those early days of a most-anticipated visit to any neighborhood in the mid-1950s. Our house was new and the road in front paved only with gravel. Piles of fine dust provided the shoulders to the seldom-used road. It was on one of those hot August days that seemed to go on forever that my sister and I lounged on a screened side porch, slung strategically on an old glider that my father considered our most valued piece of furniture. At first, the sound was faint and barely recognizable, but, as seconds passed, the high pitched chime became more distinct and finally, recognizable. “The popsicle man is coming,” we screamed in unison. My father handed out small change and we proceeded to the see Lesson > page 7

Friendship
married Don and the four settled into family lives, but the friendship strengthened with the men becoming best buddies. Sally and Don’s daughters were born between my sister Robin and me. I have so many good memories of vacations with the Scaggs family. With them living in Cleveland, we were exposed to culture and art. I’ll never forget seeing the skeletal remains of a brontosaurus in a Cleveland museum. But I digress (typical, I derail often). Sally, like Mom, is now liv-
ing with her remaining daughter. Both women lost their oldest daughters in recent years. Patty Reynolds invited her mother to join her and her husband Rick when they left Ohio for North Carolina. It’s a bonus for us. Rather than a sevenhour drive, they’re about half that distance now. As a matter of fact, they came for a visit on July 7. We treated them to a nice lunch at the Hanover Tavern. I delight in our county’s history, especially its role in our nation’s birth. Patty was taking photos around the Tavern and
courthouse complex area. I also drove by Historic Polegreen Church, which became one of my favorite locales when I first moved here. The one staple in the visit was the relationship Sally and Mom still have. It’s always as if they saw each other the day before. That is a true and lasting friendship. I keep using the word friendship, when, in actuality, we’re family. Blood doesn’t define that relationship. Yes, they are blessed — but so are those of us who are in their world.
up and saw my father standing at the front door of our house, a witness to my ungentlemanly behavior. In one brief moment of bad judgment, I stood there – exposed, so to speak — popsicle in one hand and future in the other, both jeopardized by a quickly departing truck. Now, the details are blurred but I still remember the image of a melting orange popsicle laying wasted in one of those light brown piles of dirt. My father refreshed me
on the responsibilities of civil behavior, and the incident was mostly forgotten except when my sister told everyone who would listen of the incident. The poet said there’s a lesson to be learned in each of life’s experiences, good or bad. The incident didn’t deter my love of orange popsicles, but, over the years, while others headed for the woods or side of the road to relieve themselves, I always wait for the gas station. was snow-covered and the vehicle had caught her coat. She suffered a broken leg and was bedfast as she recovered. During her recuperation, Sally came to visit with a handsome man from a neighboring county. Well, that initial visit led to a courtship and marriage by year’s end. Dad told Mom in April that he would marry her by the end of the year, 1951, and did so on Dec. 29. A few months later, Sally

As the first puff of cold air shot out of the freezer, I recognized an urge that was even more recognizable than the popsicle bell. I had to go in the worst way. As the line moved ever so slowly, the need to relieve became almost unbearable. Without revealing delicate details and at what I still contest was with the permission and somewhat urging of my older sister, I made one of my first bad decisions in life. As fate would have it, the popsicle truck that provided my cover pulled away and a small a 5-year-old boy was left standing in the most precarious of positions. As I gathered myself, I looked

Storms slow down, but can’t stop, Goochland Y By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Just minutes into the first heat of the first relay race of the night on July 11 at the Goochland YMCA during the Greater Richmond Aquatic League meet between Goochland and Antioch, thunder rolled and lightning lit up the sky. The storm delayed the meet
for over 30 minutes, but the teams picked up right where they left off when the weather moved past the area. The delay didn’t slow down the Manta Rays as they rolled past Antioch 743-346. “I would have liked a few more Champs qualifiers, but as a team we are doing great,” coach Helen Brown wrote in an email. “We have more qualified
swimmers this season than last season and of those who have qualified, we have more qualifying events this season,” she added. Brown wrote that the delay that the team encountered on July 11 is nothing new for this season. In fact, it’s been par for the course. “This entire season has been difficult,” Brown wrote.
“We have had to cancel relays twice. One meet was completely rescheduled and two saw delays. Finally, one home meet we had unusually high temperatures, which always works against swimmers earning best times. Despite all the above, our team is looking strong.” Nathaniel Harris was the lone quad-winner for the Manta Rays against Antioch,
winning the 25 back, the 25 breast, the 25 free and was on the winning mixed eight-andunder 100 free relay team. Lillian Beatty won three events for Goochland, taking home the top prize in the 100 free, 50 back and 50 breast. Afton Carter won the 50 free, 25 free and was on the same winning relay team as Harris. Eleanor Martin won the
100 free, 50 breast and 50 fly for Goochland in the 11-to12-year-old division. Kaysen Mills won three events as well in the 100 free, 100 breast and the 50 fly. Abby Pillion added three wins to Goochland’s total against Antioch as she won the 50 back, 100 breast and 50 fly. see Swim>9

Roundup: U10 girls soccer team finalist at Sun Cup By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The girls U10 soccer team of the Goochland United Soccer Association had a solid performance in June in the 15th annual RVA Sun Cup Recreational Soccer tournament. The team, nicknamed the “Girls on Fire,” reached the finals in their division. The Girls on Fire played three games and went 2-1 in the tournament. The team scored 12 goals and allowed nine. On June 2, the Girls on Fire defeated FC Richmond-PDP Girls Forest 6-3. The team lost a close game by a 3-2 final to FYSA Force. On June 3, the Girls on Fire beat the Pink Panthers 4-3. The FYSA Force went 3-0 to win the U9/10 Girls Forest Division that the Girls on Fire were also in. The Goochland Dynamite also participated in the tournament and was in the U9/10 Coed White Division. The Dynamite went 0-1-1 and finished third in their flight.
LEGION American Legion Post 201 faced a familiar opponent on July 14 at Powhatan High School — themselves. Post 201 was scheduled to

face Post 125 in its last home game of the season, but Post 125 couldn’t come up with enough players to field a team and were forced to forfeit. The forfeit brought Post 201’s record to even for the season and the team decided to make the most of the fact that they were already at the field and even had an umpire present. Post 201 did a seven-inning split-squad scrimmage, a welcome respite from the grind of the Legion season. Head coach Eric Mead said that while the team would have liked to have played an actual game, the practice comes at a key point in the season for the team. “It’s very good for us,” he said. “To be able to red and white intersquad, and we had four or five alumni who are playing college baseball come back and play with us … that just helps us improve our game. It allows our pitchers to stay in their groove in the pitching rotation. It worked out well.” The scrimmage also came at a good time for Post 201 as they are in the midst of a twogame losing streak. On July 12, Post 201 lost in extra innings on the road against Post 361. On July 13, Post 201 hosted Post 284 at Powhatan and while Cody Willis and Cale Agee both hit two-run homers, Post 201 fell to Post 284
7-5. On July 16, Post 201 began playing against Post 137, but a downpour stopped the game in the second inning when Post 201 was down 5-0. The teams tried to play again on July 17 at Powhatan High School as opposed to L.C. Bird, where the game was originally scheduled.
Emmi Evans, Payton Harrigal, Dylan Houchins, Garrett Kemmerly, Luke Pushinsky, Andrea Rogerson, Annika Rogerson, Jacob Shively and Aiden Valdez all won two events at the meet. “Our team really worked together,” Brown wrote of the team’s performance against
Antioch. “Swimmers were on deck cheering each other on. I have to give the standout performance to the entire team.” The July 11 meet against Antioch was the final home meet of the season for the Manta Rays. The regular season ended
MLB In the second inning on July 15 in Houston, Goochland High School was represented both on the mound and at the plate during the game between the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. At the plate was John Hicks and facing him was former Bulldog and former Tiger Justin Verlander. Hicks got the best of Verlander, sending a two-run home run into left field for a 2-0 lead. Detroit won the game 6-3 over Houston. Hicks was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored for the Tigers. Verlander struck out 12 batters in the loss for Houston. It was the first time that two Goochland High School graduates faced each other in the majors. In a video posted by NBC 12’s Marc Davis on Twitter, Verlander reacted with a smile when asked about the match-

up with Hicks during media availability on July 16 at the All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. “It was horrible,” he said with a laugh. “I’d rather not, but I did. His brother was my best man at my wedding, so he’ll have bragging rights for a while.” Hicks is hitting .278 this season for Detroit with nine home runs and 32 RBIs.
Verlander is 9-5 this season with Houston with a 2.29 ERA and 172 strikeouts. While Verlander was voted an All-Star, he will not appear in the game as last pitched on July 15 and wouldn’t be rested for the All-Star Game.

on July 17 at Bell Creek, which occurred past the print deadline for this edition. After the July 17 meet, Goochland will over a week to prepare for the season finale at CHAMPS on July 28-29. The 12-year-olds and under will compete on July 28 at SwimRVA, while the 13- and
up swimmers will compete on July 29. Brown wrote that she feels there is still improvement to be made amongst her swimmers. “Each week we introduce swimmers to more tools for each race,” she wrote. “There is quite a bit to pull together
to have that perfect race. We like our swimmers to focus on one goal per week. As the weeks go on, swimmers begin to put all their tools into their races.” As of Meet 5, Goochland is in second place in Division 4 with 4,199 points, behind The Federal Club’s 4,239.
