Parks and Rec to host evening with Richmond improv team By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland County’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department will be hosting a night of comedy on Aug. 11, welcoming the Comedy Sports improv team for a performance at the Central High School complex on Dogtown Road. To Parks and Rec Program
Skinner continued from >1 He was reportedly shot by the mother of the 14-year-old girl he had first made contact with through the online voiceover-internet application called Discord, which allows people participating in online gaming to talk to one another. While the details of their relationship are not known, Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew said the teen had attempted to cut off contact with Skinner at some point. Skinner allegedly made several attempts to contact her again before embarking on June 20 from Auckland, New Zealand, on a journey
Director Jessica Kronberg, the evening will be a chance for Goochlanders to enjoy plenty of laughs, though she cautions that the name of the group may throw some people off at first. Despite having the word “sport” in their name, the group doesn’t engage in any athletics per se during the performance. Instead, said Kronberg, “they
treat comedy as a sport.” Tickets for the all ages show, which will start at 7 p.m. and last around an hour and a half, are $15, and are available on the Parks and Rec Department’s activities website (https:// apm.activecommunities.com/ goochland/Home) until Aug. 10. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the show.
that would include stops in Sydney, Australia; Los Angeles, California; Washington, D.C. and Richmond. Deputies have charged Skinner with a single count of Breaking and Entering with the Intent to Rape, Rob or Murder while armed with a deadly weapon. A hearing has been tentatively set for Monday, July 30 in Goochland General District Court. As Agnew recounted during a press conference last month, deputies had responded to the address after a man called 911 saying that his wife had just called and told him that a man was attempting to break into the home on Steeplechase Parkway. Skinner was reportedly
warned by the woman that she was armed, but picked up a landscape brick and hurled it through the glass door leading into the family’s kitchen. When he reached in to unlock the door, the woman fired twice, striking Skinner in the neck. He ran off, collapsing in a neighbor’s yard, where law enforcement officers discovered him moments later. In his possession was a hunting knife and duct tape, both purchased earlier that day at a nearby Walmart. While it is not yet known how he found the family’s address, Skinner’s motive was clear, Agnew said last month. “His whole intent in coming here was, come hell or high water, to see this young lady.”

That gardening life: Dispatches from the deck On video: By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Week 1
Week 3 It’s July and everything is coming along! Well, maybe not everything —the eggplant that I planted decided that maybe it didn’t want to grow eggplants for my planned ratatouille as much as it wanted to kind of sit there all wilty and shrivelly. A few of the other plants have died from what I attribute to bad luck and my neighbor snarkily refers to as my liaise fare attitude towards watering. Whatever — I’m still having a great time and still planning on reaping enough to keep my family in homegrown produce until the cows come home. (That’s how we farm folk say “a really long time”).On a side note, my garden appears to be very popular with the local wildlife. Squirrels and birds are always hovering around, and this morning I saw the most adorable caterpillar lounging happily on the leaf of one of my tomato plants — so cute!
I’m so glad I decided to go ahead and finally plant my deck garden this year. It’s only mid-June, but all of my potted vegetable and herb plants are thriving — it should be a bumper crop this year! I knew all the work I put in months ago — the little seeds painstakingly sowed in dozens of individual little cups of soil and arranged just-so on the windowsill, the vigilant watering, the arguing with my husband, who strongly prefers that the dirt stay “outside the house”— would pay off. I’m so excited for the harvest that I can’t stop planning how I will use all of my tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and herbs. My neighbor, who has an actual garden planted in the actual ground, keeps making passive aggressive comments about my deck garden and even flat-out said that container gardening is for people who can’t handle the real thing. I thought Week 6 about telling him that his lawn Soooo…apparently that ornaments are tacky and his azaleas caterpillar is more commonly look like they were pruned with known as a tomato horna backhoe, but I didn’t. But I still worm (where were you on might. that one, Garden Guru next door?) and the one I saw didn’t waste any time eating up half of my plants.

When I finally realized what was happening (I had been super busy with a work project and wasn’t as “hands-on” as maybe I should have been for a few weeks), the peppers had been eaten by squirrels and the herbs were pretty much dried up. You know what though? It’s still cool. I’m learning what all of those hardscrabble farmers that survived the dust bowl knew — sometimes life isn’t fair, and sometimes all you’re left with are a few hearty plants and your good name. My plan now is to take very good care of those three plants and enjoy the some-
what abbreviated — but still bountiful — fruits of my labor.
Week 9 You are cordially invited to join me tomorrow evening when I dice up the three tomatoes I managed to salvage from my last surviving plant and toss them with some arugula and herbs and other stuff I will have to get from the supermarket. No, it will not be the yield I’d hoped for, but I am confident it will be delicious. My neighbor is not invited.

When a pair of Blockbuster Video Stores shuttered their doors in Alaska in recent months, it left only one store remaining from the powerhouse corporation’s once dominant position and its more than 9,000 stores boasted in its heyday. A single outlet in Bend, Oregon, claims the title as the last man or woman standing in an industry that sat by helpless as technology passed it by. The super stores in metropolitan areas were the first to go, but, eventually, the trend claimed all of the corporations once vaunted operations. Some gave up the old habit more quickly than others, and, to this day, there’s still a steady of line of cars that pull up to small red boxes that rent movies to the consumers still adventurous enough to actually handle the title they are watching. And, there’s no doubt, we don’t have the same relationship with wireless rentals and movies that are delivered in the blink of an eye as we enjoyed with the neighboring gathering places called video stores. “I’m going to get a couple of videos” is a term that seems foreign to my children who grew up in an era where a trip to the video store was as unknown as references to eight-track tapes. But, those of us who lived it realize the video rental era was more than just the opportunity to obtain a popular movie and enjoy it in the comfort of your home. A trip to the video store was always more of a social exercise, a proclamation that a population was eager see Video > page 7

Attendance at movie theaters plummeted as Americans chose to pop their own popcorn and watch movies at their own pace and with their own homespun style. Even with the unique and new environment of a busy outlet, the age of the video tape was doomed almost from the start, as a collection of more advanced delivery systems chased and finally caught the industry providing Americans with one-touch ordering for movies or other entertainment. Many of the stores switched from cassette to CD in an effort to capture the changing market, but it was evident that the video tape was headed for the same fate as the Walkman. In an era when every open storefront seemed to beckon the opening of a new video store, it seemed impossible the trend was facing such an untimely demise. But, convenience prevailed and Americans clearly demonstrated a preference to sit at home and select movies from seemingly unending lists, minus the trip to the local video store. video return window. But, there were still the loyal few who refused to surrender to the demands of advancing technology and continued to frequent the few remaining stores. And, now there’s one. The manager said her customer base is confined to locals who live near the store, and most people stop at the store for a quick selfie, or a chance to experience one more small dis-
appearing part of Americana that will be lost forever. Baby Boomers are a multigenerational group. They’ve seen things come and go before. Remember, there used to be cigarette lighters and ash trays in every car produced. Losing the last semblance of an age when family movie night encompassed a trip to the video store is not a major upset in our daily routines, but some lament the loss of any
sign of a slower and less complicated time when passwords were not required. The rest of us salute the final Blockbuster and wish the surviving outlet a long and prosperous future. In reality, it’s more of a case of good riddance and a willingness to forget and bury a phrase that once seemed like everyday communication. “Be kind, please rewind,” no more.

American Legion Post 201’s Adam Seal prepares to swing at an offering against Post 186 on July 23 at Powhatan Middle School in the District 11 tournament. Seal had a home run and 3 RBIs in the win over 186, which was delayed by a day and changed venues due to the rainy weather that hit the area.
Post 201 beats 186, falls to 175 in district tourney By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Post 201 was faced with an unusual situation on July 23. The team was playing at Powhatan Middle School on a field that the Junior Legion team uses as its home field, but Post 201 was the visitors on the scoreboard. Due to the rain and wet fields plaguing the area, the
District 11 tournament has set up an impromptu home base at Powhatan Middle School, with three games having been playing there on July 22 and two more on July 23. In Post 201’s second game of the tournament, Reilly Dickerson did his best to throw off the hitters of the top seed Post 175, but a three-run home run put a big enough gap on Post 201 to keep the
team at bay for the remainder of the game in a 5-1 loss. “It’s the same way we played them last time,” Post 201 coach Eric Mead said. “Reilly did a heck of a job. He just made that one mistake, which turned into a home run. He hit a couple of batters. If we could have eliminated about three opportunities on the mound for him to do a bit better, we could have stopped
about two or three runs. We just struggled at the plate to make contact and score runs.” Post 201 scored in the first inning after Carter Minnick worked a leadoff walk and made it to second on a stolen base. Three batters later, Jacob Beil grounded sharply to second base and the throw to first was way off target, allowing Minnick to score and
make it 1-0. The lead didn’t last, however, as Zach Beach drove in Nick Zonna on an RBI single for a tie 1-1 game. Post 175 added another in the second, when Trey Karnes scored on a single off the bat of Brian Sisson to make it 2-1 Post 175. The heavy lumber came in the bottom of the fourth, when Karnes and Austin Odell
reached base and Camden Grimes launched an offering from Dickerson to centerfield for a three-run blast. Post 201’s offense was making contact with the ball, but more often than that, the hits were right to the Post 175 defenders. Only six batters struck out for Post 201 over the course of see Legion>9

Goochland moving up to Class 3 in new VHSL alignment By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Every four seasons, the Virginia High School League re-evaluates the size of the enrollment of the member schools and if they should move up or down in classification. That time came around again in June when the VHSL announced the alignment plan for 2019-2023. In the plan that was announced in June, Goochland will be moving up a classification level from Class 2 to Class 3. “We’ll be going up against some different teams when it comes to the playoffs,” Goochland athletic director Joe Fowler said. “Our new region is going to stretch from the City of Richmond all the way to the outskirts of (Washington) D.C. It’s a big region.” Goochland will become a member of Class 3, Region B starting in the 2019-2020 academic year. Currently, that region consists of Armstrong, Brenstville, Culpeper, Thomas
Legion continued from >8 the game. Post 201 left four runners on base as they sought, but couldn’t find, consistent opportunities to score runs. “I think we have to do a little better at the plate,” Mead said. “I didn’t think we had good plate appearances tonight. There were some fastballs right down the middle of the plate that we should have jumped on. We left them up in the coutn and we had
Jefferson, Manassas Park, John Marshall, James Monroe, William Monroe, Skyline, Spotsylvania, Warren County and George Wythe. When the Bulldogs arrive, it is part of a major overhaul of Class 3, Region B. Armstrong, Brentsville, Manassas Park, William Monroe, Skyline, Warren County and George Wythe will remain in the region, with Goochland, Central Woodstock, Independence, George Mason and Maggie Walker Governor’s School becoming members of the region. Culpeper, Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and Spotsylvania will be exiting the region. Also new to Class 3 will be Lafayette in Region A, Charlottesville, Liberty Christian and Wilson Memorial in Region C and William Byrd and Carroll County in Region D. Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and Windsor will be moving to Class 2, Region A, which is the current classification of the Bulldogs. Fowler said that the new
classification of the teams will force everyone to “raise their game.” “We’re going to be going against larger classification of teams,” he said. “The Class 3 classification goes all the way up to 1,130 kids. We’re going to be at over 800 kids. We’re going to have to raise our game a little bit. For the first two years, we’re going to stay in the James River District. We’ll have to get into some creative scheduling for nonconference games to basically improve our strength of schedule. We’ll be playing larger schools for our nonconference games.” While recent region tournament games, such as Goochland and Maggie Walker continuing to form a rivalry on the baseball diamond, will continue in the new classification as the Green Dragons will be moving up with the Bulldogs, other matchups that occurred in the 2017-18 season will not be possible under the new classification. Goochland’s girls basketball team played King William, Goochland’s boys basketball
team played Randolph-Henry and Greensville en route to a region title, the volleyball team played Poquoson to win the region title and played Luray and Wilson-Memorial in the Class 2 state playoffs, and Goochland football played Poquoson and Amelia, just to name a few. None of those games will be possible in the playoffs when Goochland moves up in 2019. “I don’t know if it’s a good or bad move,” Fowler said. “But, it’s a state-mandated move, so we don’t really have any say in whether we get bumped up or not. You play where you’re classified and we’re going to be classified as a 3A school. We’ve gone up before. We got bumped in the fall of 2009 when we were in the Jefferson District and, for certain sports, we did really well. Football did well, baseball and softball held their own. Other sports struggled against larger classification teams, like Western Albemarle, Orange and Charlottesville. At least in the district schedule, we’ll be with teams who are approximately our enrollment size.
Come playoff time, we’ll be playing bigger schools. We’ll get to work and do what we need to do to be competitive.” In terms of the upcoming 2018-19 school year, Fowler said that his department will be focusing on the teams they’ll be facing this year in Class 2 and will worry about the new teams when they are
officially potential playoffs opponents in 2019-2020. An additional meeting on the future alignment occurred on July 25, which any appeals to the changes scheduled for Aug. 21. Sports Editor Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com.
to battle from being down in the count. We hit against this baseball team. If we can get the hits together, we have a good chance to beat them.” The district tournament was scheduled to start on July 21, but most of the teams were forced to postpone due to wet fields. Post 201 moved to the field at Powhatan Middle School and attempted to play on July 21, but the district ruled that they couldn’t play when the other teams were rained out. Instead, the district sched-
uled three games to be played at Powhatan Middle School in an impromptu first day district tournament jubilee. “It’s summer baseball,” Mead said of the delays. “You have guys coming and going for work and everything else. Every time a schedule changes, you have to redo your lineup. So, yea, it’s frustrating. It’s tough.” Despite all the shuffling of schedules and venue changes, Post 201 got their district tournament underway with a 7-3 win over Post 186.
Tommy Preston went two innings for Post 201 and allowed one run on two hits and struck out five batters. Post 186 scored in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Adam Seal brought home Minnick after Minnick doubled in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. TJ Jordan gave Post 201 the lead when he stole home in the first inning, with Seal scoring later in the inning to make it 3-1. Seal launched a home run
to centerfield in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-1. Josh Dawson scored later in the inning for a 5-1 lead after a fielder’s choice groundball from Jacob Beil. Post 186 got two runs back in the top of the fourth to make it 5-3. Seal got his third RBI of the day in the bottom of the inning, scoring Austin Nicholas. Jordan scored on a wild pitch during the next atbat to make it 7-3. “I thought we could have
played a little better than we did,” Mead said. “But, a win is a win. We hit well in some spots.” The win broke a four-game losing streak for Post 201. “We needed this win some kind of bad going into the first round of the district tournament,” Mead said. “It was a good win.” Post 201 played Post 125 in the third round of the district tournament, weather permitting. It is a double elimination tournament.
