Fauquier will host first-ever Shrimp Fest Organizers hoping to bring residents together, raise funds for church’s Women’s Ministry By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As a general rule, Goochland resident Joe Wadle doesn’t much care for being the center of attention. Recently, however, during the annual American Veterans Tribute event held last month at Lake Gaston, he didn’t have much choice: Wadle, you see, was the guest of honor.

Knowing, perhaps, that nothing brings people together quite like the promise of delicious food, the Women’s Ministry of the Fauquier Baptist Church will be hosting the first annual Community Shrimp Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15. The event, which will feature food, games and entertainment from the Carl Waterford Band “Bridge,” is intended to help raise funds for the ministry’s charitable programs, as well as to offer residents a chance to come out and enjoy time together. “We really want to get the community to come out and fellowship with one another,” said Vickie Nash, who is heading up the planning of the event with co-chair Peggy Allen. The festival will be held at the Goochland Recreational Center from noon until 6 p.m. at the Goochland Recreational Center, located at 2425 Sandy Hook Road in Goochland. Tickets are $10 in advance until Sept. 5, 2018, and no

VDOE and federal law. This year, Goochland County Public Schools ranked 8 out of 132 divisions in the Commonwealth based on data from the Annual Performance Report. This represents an improvement from 10 out of 132 as of the last report in 2017. Jennifer Waggener, GCPS Director of Exceptional Education, attributes Goochland’s distinction and continued improvement to the collaborative efforts of staff and parents. “Our exceptional education teachers and staff balance the complex work of special education as both instructors and managers, ensuring compliance in maintenance and communication with families, students, and staff while still building quality relationships and maximizing the potential of each learner. Our work in our buildings by our staff, coordination among schools and central office, and the regular feedback we receive from our Special Education Advisory Council has created a culture of continuous improvement for our students with disabilities. I am excited to see that our work continues to be recognized.”

Goochland resident Joe Wadle, second from left, joined past American Veterans Tribute Veterans of the Year Bill Robinson (2017), far left, Bruce Heilman (2015), Bill Haneke (2012) and Paul Galanti (2010). Wadle was this year’s honoree.

Honor continued from >1 During the day-long event held July 8, Wadle was honored as the 2018 American Veterans Tribute Veteran of the Year. Founded in 1987 AVT is a nonprofit organization focused on helping veterans through various efforts and programs. In receiving the honor, Wadle joined the ranks of celebrated veterans Bill Robinson, Bruce Heilman, Bill Haneke, and Paul Galanti. After a flight from HalifaxNorthampton Regional Airport — and a textbook water landing on the lake — Wadle and his wife Jackie were taken by boat to the main stage area and introduced to the crowd. Afterward, they enjoyed a blowout celebration featuring performances from the band Legends and Outlaws, the American Veterans Tribute Band, and Grammy nominated Nashville recording artist Gordon Mote, as well as a world-class fireworks show. While the retired Marine

colonel said he was deeply honored to have been chosen as this year’s honoree, he insisted that he was humbled to have his name listed beside those of the courageous and selfless men and women who have been honored in the past. “I am just another person who served and just never wanted to stop serving our country and our people,” Wadle said during his remarks. “Everything that America has become that is good, is due to the honor, courage and commitment of America’s warriors, our veterans, past, present and future and that these people are the most valuable and their profession the most honorable and sacred in our society. The Nation and the World enjoys freedom, because of America’s patriot soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen and Marines!” Wadle, whom many Goochland residents may know through his work with the Goochland American Legion Post or the Goochland High School JROTC program, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1962. “I knew what I needed was

discipline,” said Wadle, and he found it. Of his initial first impression of the service, Wadle described it succinctly: “I grew up in one night.” After serving 13 months in Vietnam, Wadle went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering, as well as a master’s degree in finance. A career with Exxon followed, as did a long career in the Marine Corps reserves. He retired as a Colonel from the reserves in 1998 and from Exxon in 2004, moving with his wife to ManakinSabot in 2007. To Ron Vassar, who founded American Veterans Tribute over 30 years ago, Wadle’s selection as Veteran of the Year was an easy one, in part because he was so highly recommended by each and every past honoree. Vassar, who served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1970, said its men like Wadle who deserve all the respect and admiration their communities can give them. “They just gave so much to us,” said Vassar. “We need to give back.”

Mini-reunion offers chance to share high school memories

n June, fifteen members of the Goochland High School Class of ‘71, along with numerous spouses, met at the Goochland home of Sandra and Sam Barkley. This was the fifth “mini-reunion” since three of us found each other on Facebook … which led to finding more of our classmates there, then more through word of mouth. Plans were put together, phone calls made, instructions and directions given. Each year we added a few more members. more informal than a full-scale reunion). The conversations went something like: “Have you heard from …. lately?” “Remember that day in 11th grade English when …..” “One day I skipped school and when I showed up the next day ….” Such fun conversations. Everyone brought food to share, and in spite of plans to dine outside, we ended up eating in the house because dark clouds outside came and went. Friends gathered in groups at the various tables, remembering times from graduation 47 years ago and the years prior at Goochland

I’m a sucker for a good mystery, but, when it hits too close to home, finding an answer seems almost critical. Last week, I strolled the cereal aisle of my local supermarket searching for a familiar orange box with an athlete on the front. Now, advancing age has taught me not to trust my first attempt at searching for anything. Countless searches have ended by moving a napkin and finding the item I’ve been searching for an ample amount of wasted time. So, I double-checked the rows of cereal, but had no luck in finding my Wheaties. Well, stores often fail to restock and they must have missed my Breakfast of Champions. Earlier this week, I accompanied my daughter to another grocery store, another national player, and I immediately headed for the cereal aisle. Again, no success in a search that now was approaching frantic stage. Could it be that I had entered the only two stores in the area that didn’t have any Wheaties? A quick trip to the cereal’s website confirmed I was one among legions who could not find the cereal, but finding an explanation for the shortage was more elusive. Some posters claimed that General Mills, the parent company, had cut production of Wheaties to beef-up production of their best-selling Cheerios, but no official statement could confirm that theory. Another possibility that gained footing on the social media page pointed to a nationwide truckers shortage that had affected distribution. In what was as close as an official statement as I could locate, the Wheaties social media team see Champion > page 7

Finally, on Saturday, Aug. 25, a somewhat official-looking video popped up on the site announcing the Breakfast of Champions was back, coming off the sideline and starting in a store near you. That tidbit left me really confused as to what had really happened the past weeks to force the shortage. I’m not sure what to make of any of it. But I can empathize with the many posters that lamented the lack of a morning tradition in many households. There were numerous posts claiming a 50-year relationship with the tiny morsels. While the flow of years has rounded her edges, my mother’s nature can sometimes be problematic for those unaccustomed to such strong stuff. She is nothing if not honest. Years ago as a sulky teenager, I whined to my father on a car ride that she had embarrassed me by calling someone out for their rude behavior during a school event. “You know,” my father said

quietly, “It’s actually something I have always admired about your mother. She isn’t afraid to stand up for herself or anyone else.” It was the first time I began to see her outsized, fearless personality as an asset, something to be admired. She didn’t have much use for fluff, and pushed my sister and me to do things we were afraid of and experience the joys of making things with our hands. Imagination and creativity were prized, conformity was not. The other day when the

One woman lamented her 5-year-old cries when she returns home from the store without the wheat morsels. Founded in 1924 as Washburn’s Gold Medal Whole Wheat Flakes, company officials decided a year later that shorter was actually better when it comes to marketing and the name was changed to Wheaties. The iconic box has featured major athletes like Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. In recent years, the once cereal aisle champion has experienced declining sales, so, when the shortage struck, many predicted the cereal had finally succumbed to changing

market preferences. One headline read “Is Wheaties dying a slow death?” Many think the shortage is just a preamble to an impending fate. It became apparent this mystery was going to require some serious legwork and investigation, so I set off to find the elusive box of cereal. Lo and behold, I found the long-absent box at a local grocery store with the same familiar look. But, I didn’t recognize an aging basketball player on the cover, someone called Uncle Drew. I was excited regarding my find, and headed to the checkout with my single purchase. “That’s $6.28,” the clerk said. Now, I’m not one who will drive a mile to save a dime, but the price did seem a bit exaggerated. The sticker shock didn’t last long, and I figured the extra $2 was worth it.

postcard came thanking me for making the time to go and see the exhibit and all its wonders, it was signed from Napoleon himself. I still have it on the fridge, and I smile every time I look at it and recall how my mom described the legendary French general: Fearless, bold, limitless — someone who grabbed onto life with both hands and inspired those around them to be better and go further. Who wouldn’t count themselves lucky to know someone I know I do. As for the mystery, it remains unsolved and I honestly can’t tell you why Wheaties disappeared for those six weeks. But, I can tell you that absence does make the heart grow fonder, especially topped with some yummy bananas.

Goochland’s Quincy Snead (22) rips off a fourth quarter run that set the Bulldogs up deep in Vikings territory as defender Shemar Graham finally runs him out of bounds. Perry Snead Johnson eventually scored the game winner seconds later.

Bulldogs score late in fourth to defeat Vikings 14-7 By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Goochland head coach Alex Fruth took off his hat and exhaled a well-deserved sign of relief as the final seconds waned in the Bulldogs 14-7 season-opening home win on Aug. 24 over Thomas Jefferson. Nothing came easy for the

Bulldogs as first-game jitters and a much improved Thomas Jefferson team coupled to make the first win challenging. “I thought we played hard, but need to improve up front on offense and hold on to the ball,” Fruth said following his first game as the Bulldogs’ head coach. The Bulldogs took the

opening kickoff, but quickly gained an appreciation for the Vikings speedy secondary as Jaden Vaughan picked off a Devin McCray pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs didn’t panic as they took the ensuing kickoff, mounted a 80-yard rundominated drive and scored

on a McCray keeper from five yards out, knotting the score. It remained level until early in the fourth quarter. After the Vikings kicker missed a 49-yard field goal, the Bulldogs took full advantage. The Goochland offense began to click after the Thomas Jefferson miscue, as they found running room up the middle.

This was highlighted by a broken field run by Quincy Snead. Perry Snead-Johnson finished off the drive with a hardnosed six-yard run and the Bulldogs sealed a 14-7 win. Fruth said both Snead and Snead-Johnson are integral parts of the Bulldog running attack, and both don’t mind blocking for each other.

“Perry will come to me and ask for a play that allows him to be a lead blocker,” Fruth said. “Since day one, he has been one of those kids you know you can rely on.” Quincy Snead led all rushers with 119 yards, most of them coming on sprints of more than 10 yards. see Football>11

Roundup: Goochland golf hits midway point of year By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

While the rest of the fall sports are just beginning their seasons, the Goochland golf team is close to halfway done with its 2018 schedule. But, coach Knox Milligan and the Bulldogs lineup are preparing for the run to the district and region tournaments. “I think we could be doing better,” Milligan said. “But, our guys are definitely improving. It’s a short season and we only have a handful of matches left. But, I hope they’ll be peaking at the right time.” The Bulldogs have been on the road for the past two matches. On Aug. 21, Goochland faced Central Lunenburg and Randolph-Henry at Kenbridge Country Club. Then, on Aug. 23, the Bulldogs took on Amelia and Bluestone at Amelia Country Club. The home stretch for Goochland began on Aug. 28 with a home match against Bluestone and Buckingham. Then, Goochland will face Amelia and CentralLunenburg in Amelia on Aug. 30 and Cumberland and Amelia on Sept. 6. The final regular-season match of the year will be a home match against

Football continued from >10 “Quincy is explosive and we know we need to make sure he gets this touches each week,” the coach said. “He had eight runs of more than 10 yards, but what I’ve really come to love about Quincy is the fact he has been determined all year to improve his blocking, which he

Buckingham and Cumberland on Sept. 11. Then, seed matches against the James River District teams will take place on Sept. 13 with the district tournament being played on Sept. 17. Milligan said that he hopes the team is hitting its stride so that the momentum will carry into the postseason. “They’re a good group of kids and they all get along well,” he said. “Hopefully toward the end of the season, we’ll be peaking, that’s for sure.” Freshman Cole Pollard has been a strong player all season for the Bulldogs, with the lowest scoring average on the team. “If you ask him, I’m sure he’d say he wishes he was playing better,” Milligan said. “But, he’s only played in three matches. So, hopefully, he’ll catch his stride and continue to improve.” One thing that Milligan said he’s like to see the team improve upon is consistency. “They’ve all played well at times,” he said. “Our five and six guys, we’ve been alternating those, so hopefully we can find a good combination there for the regionals.”

team began the season on a winning note. On Aug. 22, the Bulldogs faced Essex and defeated the Trojans 25-11, 25-4, 26-24. Mary King had seven kills for the Bulldogs, while Margaret Black had six kills, six digs and five aces. Megan Harlow added five kills in the win, while Ellie Spencer had eight digs. Ilaria Russell had six digs. The Bulldogs hosted Central Lunenburg on Aug. 28 before heading to Nottoway on Aug. 30. Goochland will travel to Collegiate on Sept. 4 and Maggie Walker on Sept. 5 before returning home on Sept. 6 against Buckingham.

CROSS COUNTRY

Goochland’s cross country team began its season on Aug. 22 at Fluvanna. The Bulldogs performed well in the first outing of the year. The girls cross country team posted strong finishes in their first race. Grace Juran was second overall for the Bulldogs with a 23:06. Victoria Spooner was right behind her in third with a 23:48 and Zella Warner was VOLLEYBALL fourth with a 24:05. Goochland’s volleyball Anna Kate Wirsing was has done.” Both offenses struggled in different ways in the opener. The Vikings were plagued with penalties, while the Bulldogs fumbled the ball. While the offenses found it hard to find their pace, the defenses were obviously closer to mid-season form. Sam Brooks opened his senior season at linebacker and spent much of his evening in

the Vikings backfield. “Sam Brooks and the entire defense played an inspired game,” Fruth said. “Sam ended the game with eight tackles, but I felt like every time I looked up he was there making a play.” Fruth said the defense answered the bell in its first outing. “They played the game we needed them to play — fast,

said. “Tons of time, preparation put into that moment, I really loved the moment after the game with my kids on the field,” Fruth said. But, now it’s back to work, and Fruth said the theme of this week’s practice would be focus as they prepare for Fork Union on Friday at home. “We need to focus on ball protection, knowing our

assignments, being disciplined before and after the whistle, and special teams,” Fruth said. “We did some good things Friday night, but we have a ton of room to improve.” And improvement is what Fruth is looking for as his team gets ready for FUMA. “We have to focus on getting better, fixing our turnover issue and shifting gears to FUMA.”

aggressive, causing total chaos at the line of scrimmage for TJ,” the coach added. Getting that first win under his belt was important for Fruth, but a congratulatory hug from his kids provided the most inspiration for the new head coach. “It’s always nice to win, especially when you stop and think about the run up to the first game of the year,” Fruth

Benedictine welcomes Bishop Knestout to campus By Ben Walls Contributing Writer

On Friday, Aug. 24, the Bishop for the Diocese of Richmond, Barry C. Knestout, visited Benedictine College Preparatory to preside at a Mass at Benedictine’s chapel for its students, faculty and staff. According to Benedictine’s headmaster, Jesse Grapes, this is the first time the bishop has visited Benedictine since 2011, when the school had its centennial. At 9:29 a.m., the chapel at

the Abbey was filled with students, faculty and staff of Benedictine in addition to visitors and the monks from Mary Mother of the Church Abbey. In addition to the bishop visiting the campus, Friday was the feast of Saint Bartholomew. In His Excellency’s homily, he made a connection to the martyr. Bartholomew was someone who spoke truth and, according to Knestout, speaking truth requires one to be honest: Saint Bartholomew was one who was “never two-faced.”

Several senior Cadets had the privilege to serve the Mass, either as an usher, lector or altar server. “It was a great honor to be a part of the Mass and especially an honor to be able to present the bread and wine to the bishop,” said Cadet Samuel Bentley, who served as an usher. “This occasion, during which I had been granted the honor of acting as an altar server, is one that I will always cherish and one that makes me fortunate that I am able to have this experience at Benedictine,” said Cadet

Oliver Sibal, who served as an acolyte. “I was extremely honored,” said Cadet Bradford Dudley when asked about serving as a lector on Friday’s mass. “This was a big deal for the school and I was proud to represent it well.” Following the service, the bishop provided words of encouragement to the school’s Cadets and a “tip of the cap” to Grapes and Father John Mary, who presided with him, along with the monks at the Abbey. With a big event this early in the school year, it’s

comforting to know that a prominent figure in Catholicism has visited the school and whose members have heard him preach. Bishop Knestout is a native of Cheverly, Maryland, and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. After receiving his degree in architecture at the University of Maryland, he began seminarian studies at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and was ordained a priest in June 1989. Ultimately, he was installed as bishop for the diocese on Jan. 12, 2018.
