The site of the annual Field Day (CHECK) of the Past was eerily quiet last Friday afternoon, as the lateAugust sun beat down on the roofs of the historic buildings and weathered equipment sheds scattered across the vast property off Ashland Rd. But while the open fields and grandstands where the tractor and truck pulls take place were empty, and the whirring carnival rides of last year only a memory, there was one small building that was already abuzz with activity. There, surrounded by stacks of files, paperwork and dozens of tasks-to-be-completed, executive director Melinda Gammon and volunteer Kathy Williams were hard at work on the preparations for this year’s Field Day event. Planning for the show, which offers attendees a chance to explore and celebrate the history of the area through dozens of demonstrations and exhibits, has

Next Tuesday will mark 17 years since a coordinated terrorist attack was carried out on American soil. It was a day the nation experienced the harsh reality of the world and the fact that evil things can happen in our homeland. Americans also experienced how the country can come together in a spirit of unity and rise up to the challenge. As the nation has done in the past, on September 11, 2018, the community of Goochland is invited to gather
together to remember the loss and honor the sacrifice that we all witnessed. At 9:45 a.m., members of the first responder community (Sheriff, Fire and EMS) will gather at Company 5 (2710 Fairground Rd) to specifically honor their brothers and sisters who gave their lives in the line of duty. The names of the fallen first responders will be read, and one fallen hero will be highlighted with their biography. A large American Flag will fly triumphantly over the service and the attendees. The public is invited to attend and join the public safety community in a show of unity.
At 7 p.m., the entire community is again invited to gather at Company 1 (180 River Rd) for a Community Focused Remembrance Service. Members of the ROTC will present our nations colors and several speakers will share inspirational messages. The service will be held outside (weather permitting) at the site of the county memorial to that fateful day. The memorial contains two large pieces of steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center which are woven into the memorial site. The public is encouraged to attend.

Pancakes will be star of new Legion event Contributed report
Field Day of the Past organizers Melinda Gammon, right, and Kathy Williams are hoping someone in the community might step forward and demonstrate how to use this antique loom, which will be on display during this year’s Field Day of the Past from Sept. 21 to 23.
Field Day continued from >1 become an almost year-round endeavor, said Gammon. She has been working with the organization for 27 years and watched it grow from a popular one-day event to a mammoth, three-day extravaganza that last year drew over 40,000. That quiet, serene atmosphere outside the door of her small office, she said, was simply the calm before the storm. In the weeks leading up to the show, which kicks off Friday, Sept. 21, the grounds will be transformed into a wayback wonderland, offering everything from 4-H exhibits to antique tractors and steam engines. Artifacts on display in the education building will include a Model-T, an antique soda fountain and a perfectlypreserved authentic WWI uniform, donated by a veteran’s son along with a trunk and several other items. The truck and tractor pulls remain a perennial favorite, Gammon said, but so too are the exhibits that demonstrate skills like sawmilling and
spoon-making. “It’s about providing entertainment, but also about education, Gammon said. Many of the people who will be demonstrating skills actually made their living with them at one time — and in some cases still do — lending the exhibits an authenticity that draws onlookers in and holds their attention. For Gammon and Williams, knowing the joy that Field Days brings to so many helps keep them forging ahead through the days and weeks leading up the event, even when things get tough. Over the years they’ve learned to roll with the punches, even when those punches include a hurricane (such as Isabel in 2003, which flooded the grounds, threatened the cows, and sent the portable toilets floating away down a creek). Both say the small army of exhibitors and volunteers who make the show happen have become like a family over the years. Their children grew up on the grounds, and they all socialize outside of the event as well. Gammon’s daughter is
currently majoring in history and serves as a Special Events Coordinator for the event. “That’s what we’re all about — family, said Gammon, pointing out a WWII-era photo of her father on a wall in the old-time post office building. By the time Field Days 2018 is officially underway, the post office will be ready to welcome thousands of visitors, as will the Smokehouse and the Old Fashioned Soda Pop stand. Gammon and Williams will be tired but happy, after spending more hours than they can count making sure everything goes off without a hitch, and will be looking forward to a few weeks of recovery before they get back to planning more upcoming events, including the the annual Field Day holiday festival. For now, however, the little office near the Sorghum House is their home-awayfrom-home — in just about every way but one. “We don’t sleep here, Williams said, laughing. “That’s where we draw the line.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
A fleeting moment of glory, frozen in time By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Click. It took just a fraction of a second for the clunky old camera, the one I lugged to countless youth sporting events and loved and cursed in equal measure, to capture what remains my very favorite photo from my time as a local sports writer over a decade ago. The shot was taken on a high school football field, probably around mid-November, just as the annual wave of playoff excitement was beginning to build. It is a scene familiar to anyone who has ever seen a youth football game at any level: players bursting through a banner and making their way in a jumbled, thundering herd toward the center of the field. I’d taken the same exact pic-
ture hundreds of times. Sometimes you might get an interesting or comical shot, maybe if some poor person helping to hold the banner got tangled up in the melee, or if— as I saw at least once — the first kid through tripped over his own feet and caused a half-dozen player pile-up (note: this typically did not bode well for his team’s chances that day). Even on that day, I don’t think I noticed anything special about the image, just a handful of teenage boys bursting through a paper sign with the ferocious, chest-thumping exuberance of young men imitating their NFL heroes. It was only a year or so later, going through an old file on my computer, that I gave the picture even a second thought. This time, however, something about it stopped me cold.
There in the center of the frame, arms outstretched, face turned toward the sun, body captured in mid-leap, was a young man I instantly recognized. The reason was because I also had covered the story when that same teenager lost his life not long after the photo was taken. It was a tragedy in every sense, a future that held so much promise erased in an instant. And as the small community where it happened struggled to make sense of the young man’s death, there was little solace to be found. No one could undo what had happened, but there was something about the photo that served, at least to me, as a sort of balm, a reminder of much happier times. If just for one brief, glittering moment, that kid was the king of the world, a warrior basking in adulation from
the cheering crowds. That image had nothing to do with me, of course, but I was thankful to have captured it and so many others like it. I also think about those photos occasionally as another summer wanes and talk around the community turns to the prospects of the local high school football teams, offering young men the chance to be champions and older men the opportunity to remember their own heroics. No matter where life takes these young men, or what the future has in store, these days will likely remain among their most cherished memories. It is a time for learning lessons about teamwork, about effort, about heart. From a spot on the field, or even just from the stands, it’s a true gift to be able to witness.
For some parents, back-to-school is particularly tough By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
It’s an anxious time of year for any parent who has children returning to school, but for those who have kids who are transitioning or entering school for the first time, the uncertainly is even more palatable. With two teenagers entering their first year of
high school, I must admit I’ve had some more than nervous moments as summer began to wind down, and my children’s conversations turned to school supplies and what to wear on the first day. At times, I’ve felt like chewing the erasers off of that 24-pack of pencils that sits atop the pile of school supplies. Don’t worry, they’re non-toxic. Sending your child off to be cared for by

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation By Terry Ebright GoochlandCares
After a long hot summer, local Goochland food pantry shelves are bare again. September is Hunger Action Mont. As Goochland gears up for the new school year and the return of cooler temperatures, we need you to take action to fight hunger in your community. Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to join a nationwide movement that has a real and lasting impact. Goochland food pantries need your help to feed nearly 1,800 residents who struggle with hunger every day. Whether by advocating to raise awareness, making donations, or volunteering, you can make a difference during Hunger Action Month and every month to help Goochland neighbors in need. Together, we can solve hunger in our community. Everyone at any age can easily participate. Choose an activity from the “Take Action” list below. Urge your friends, family, neighborhood, class, church group, civic group, or even your employees and customers to become involved. Drop off food donations at your local food pantry or at collection boxes (non-perishable items only) at key locations throughout the county including Essex Bank, EZ Ship (next to Food Lion on Fairground Road), and Goochland Family YMCA. Take action to help solve hunger in your community: Turn orange for hunger relief by wearing the color orange on Hunger Action Day on Thursday, Sept. 6. Share a picture of your orange style online by using the hashtag #HungerAction. Volunteer at a local see Hunger > page 7
Back-to-school continued from > 6 for the past few weeks. My son has reached a point in his life when his disease, Muscular Dystrophy, is beginning to take almost daily tolls on his fragile body, and new indignities and cruelness seem to rear their ugly heads more often. I heard my son talking to his sisters about things he used to be able to do. As I listened from afar, I thought of the sadness of a 14-year-old reminiscing about things he was once able to do, but cannot anymore due to his progressive disease. It doesn’t bother me when most of my friends talk constantly or reflect or remember when things were different. I find it almost refreshing and it sometimes makes me thankful of the small tasks I am still capable of performing.
But, there’s no denying that as life progresses, many of the physical activities that were once second nature are now filled with impending doom. In other words, I don’t climb ladders or clean our gutters anymore. It all seems natural enough, but my son’s reflections were much more troubling to me, and reminded me of the futility of my efforts to fix Jack’s problem. I thought of the many things Jack can’t do anymore — like playing in the surf, hitting a baseball, or just getting from one place to another without assistance. As he prepares for his first day at Freeman High School, I reflect on a year that has been full of challenges and disappointments, including two broken legs and a progressively cruel disease that has robbed my son of the most simplest of pleasures, things we all take for granted.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor I suppose all of this contributes to my anxiety, and makes me appreciate the unique challenge of the thousands of parents who prepare disabled children for school. My friends often ask me why not just let Jack take classes online or provide home schooling, but we haven’t considered that option. Jack has never asked for special treatment, and has shown a determined will to remain in a mainstream educational setting. It’s an environment that he believes benefits his experience and enhances his chances to live as close to a normal life as possible. Additionally, I know his presence also is a valuable learning experience for the kids around him who often recognize his courage and determination. Now, I could provide a long list of the things that could go wrong on opening day for a
wheelchair-bound student in a new school with a abundance of steps — but I could probably better honor Jack by taking his approach to this new challenge. After a trip to Freeman last week to route his schedule and make sure he could make it in the allotted time, I noted a quiet confidence regarding his new adventure. While I had a number of questions about the location of classes, operation of lifts and other matters that would be foreign to most parents, he finally noticed my uncertainty and responded with the same courage he has displayed in every other challenge he’s faced. “Dad, stop worrying about this. I’ll be OK,” he said. And you know what? He’s right. He will be.

Goochland’s Devin McCray (7) had two interceptions on defense and directed a potent Bulldog offense, much of it anchored by tough running by McCray, during Goochland’s 38-7 win over FUMA.
Defense causes six turnovers in Bulldogs 38-7 win By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
What a difference a week makes. If people thought new Goochland coach Alex Fruth was going to throw the baby out with the bath water after last week’s close victory over Thomas Jefferson and an offense that was less than explosive, they would be
wrong. The Bulldogs depended on a familiar running game coupled with another lights out defensive performance to post a 38-7 victory over visiting Fork Union. “We didn’t reinvent the wheel this week on offense, just kept sticking with what has allowed us to be successful on offense over the years,” Fruth said.
That game plan included the return to a patient running game that looked for and finally exposed weaknesses in the Blue Devils front. “The fullback run game along with creating mismatches with unbalanced formations allowed us to get those number advantages,” Fruth added. One thing that didn’t change from last week’s performance was a swarming defense
that feasted on Fork Union turnovers and mistakes. It seemed like poetic justice that the defense, led by linebacker Sam Brooks, would account for the Bulldogs first score on a pick-six early in the second period. But it was the team’s prowess in the turnover game that impressed the coach. “I loved how our back half of the (defense) created
plays for us. Coach Gordon had the defensive backs ready for FUMA’s passing game, which showed with Devin and Kindrick’s picks,” Fruth said.” That aggressive play is just what Fruth wants to see from a defense that is quickly becoming the trademark of this year’s squad. “Our aggressive nature paid off those picks and the sacks we had Friday night,”
the coach said, referring to the Blue Devils six turnovers for the contest, a clear turnaround from last week’s inability of the Bulldogs to hold on to the ball. “It was a nice change going from -4 to +5 in the turnover margin.” After Brooks picked a Drew Hackenberg pass and rumsee Football>10

Goochland volleyball comes back to sweep Chargers By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It isn’t often in volleyball that one team trails by eight points to begin a set and comes back to win it. But, that’s exactly what the Goochland volleyball team did in a 25-23, 25-15, 25-21 win over Central Lunenburg on Aug. 28 at Goochland High School. The Bulldogs were out of sorts during the first eight points of the match against the Chargers, with unforced errors and aces by the Central Lunenburg servers scoring point after point. Coach Rachel Jacobsen called timeout after the opening run by the Chargers and tried to erase her team’s memory of the game up to that point. “It’s just that you have to move on,” she said. “You have to keep your head in the game. You have to focus on the next point. You have to let go of the past and focus on the little things. Whatever small thing we can tweak at that time, we’ll tweak it, but otherwise just move on.” A Central Lunenburg service error gave Goochland its first points of the match at 8-1 as the Bulldogs started to find
Football continued from >9 bled 30 yards to the end zone, Goochland’s offense found its comfort zone, hammering the Blue Devils defensive front with the run game. The Bulldogs wasted no time in scoring ensuing points as Kindrick Braxton picked off a pass and set up
their rhythm shortly thereafter. A Goochland ace by Rachel Carter started a six-point run for the Bulldogs that turned what looked to be a runaway set in favor of the Chargers into a much closer battle. Central Lunenburg’s lead held until Goochland’s Ally Mueller scored an ace to tie the game at 20-20. From there, the Bulldogs and Chargers battled for each point, with the game being tied or with just a one-point advantage five times over the next five points. However, after an ace from Blair Brussels and a kill from Mary King, the Bulldogs took set one 25-23. From there, Goochland was in steady control of the remainder of the match. In set two, Goochland opened with a 7-3 run and rode the momentum from there. A polar opposite from the beginning of set one, Central Lunenburg found issues communicating and had errant hits in the second set, giving Goochland 12 points over the span of the second set from unforced or service errors. One run of errors from the Chargers gave turned an 8-4 Goochland lead into a 12-6 advantage.
In set three, Goochland continued to press the advantage as they gapped the Chargers early in the set. Fueled by several more unforced Central Lunenburg errors, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 13-4 lead after an ace by King. Goochland went on a 4-0 run later in the set that gave them a 10-point lead. Goochland lead 21-10 after three kills in a row by King when the unforced Goochland errors reappeared. The Bulldogs committed six consecutive errors and gave the Chargers eight of the next nine points scored, which allowed Central Lunenburg to get closer than was comfortable. However, a service error and some Chargers errors closed the set out at 25-21 and the game in a three-set sweep. “The tighter games are the tougher ones,” Jacobsen said. “The important thing is that they kept their heads in the game and stayed focused on the end goal and didn’t let the little things get to them.” Marge Black led the Bulldogs with nine kills, followed by five kills from King. Ellie Spencer had 19 digs. Goochland dropped its first game of the season on Aug. 30
a 27-yard field goal by Jacob Hayward. Seconds later, Devin McCray picked another Blue Devils pass and Quincy Snead finished off that possession with a 41-yard scamper to make the score 17-0. Fullback Connor Popierlarz (123 yards on 9 carries) provided the muscle for the Bulldogs’ second half attack, finding holes in a porous Blue
Devils defense. His efforts paid off with a two-yard scoring run combined with a 44-yard ramble up the middle for his second score of the evening. “I give all credit to the offensive line,” Popierlarz said after the game. Blue Devils quarterback Kenyon Carter found Elijah Hawks for a 21-yard score early in the fourth quarter

Next week’s game against Central Lunenburg has been designated at First Responders Night at Goochland High School. All Fire/EMS workers will receive free admission to the
game. Athletic director Joe Fowler said it’s a small way to show the community’s appreciation for the work these important individuals perform. “We are doing it as a thank you for all they do in our communities and their selfless dedication to others,” he said. Former Goochland players who now work for Fire/ EMS will serve as honorary
captains and will be honored during halftime ceremonies of the game. “These men are outstanding role models for the young people in our athletic programs,” Fowler said. “They wear many different uniforms now, but it wasn’t long ago that they wore the red and gold on Friday nights.” Game time against visiting Central Lunenburg is 7 p.m.
