Schools honored continued from >1 them, said Raley last month about the nod from Niche. “We are excited for this recognition and even more excited to continue to find ways to make the Goochland experience even better. The recognition by Niche. com arrives after several recent GCPS wins, including the recent recognition of Jay Brockman as the Virginia middle school Career and Technical Education teacher of the year. Perhaps the most significant honor came over the summer, when Governor Ralph Northam and the state Board
of Education announced that GCPS was recognized as one of the 15 divisions earning the 2018 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award for its 2016-2017 student achievement. A total of 349 schools and 16 school divisions earned 2018 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. The VIP program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the Governor and the Board of Education. “Our results are strong, we have a lot to be proud of, said Steve Geyer, Assistant

After many years, ruby slippers are back home By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

The Beaux Ties, an a cappella singing group from St. Christophers School, performed the National Anthem for the crowd at last Monday’s ceremony honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Due to our press deadlines, photos from this year’s event will be included in next week’s Goochland Gazette.
Numbers help grasp reality of unimaginable day By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Immediately after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in the days and weeks of confusion, devastation and fear, it didn’t take long to realize that there was no making sense of what had happened. As the entire country remained in shock and mourning, however, those tasked with putting the pieces back together slowly began tabulating the various, heartbreaking numbers: 2,753 killed, including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority police officers
3,051 children who lost a parent. 21,906 remains found. 1,717 families who would never receive any remains at all. The anguish of that day can’t be measured in any real way — nor can the violent upending of thousands of lives —but the emerging figures helped comprehend what otherwise would have been simply incomprehensible. Seventeen years later, there also is another aspect of the tragedy that defies quantification and yet serves as one of the few tiny embers of hope to be found in the darkness of that day. Thanks to the bravery of the first respond-

ers who so selflessly risked — and, in over 400 instances, gave —their lives, countless men and women were saved. The lives those rescued people have gone on to lead because they didn’t die that day — the children they have been able to have, the good they have been able to do—was all thanks to those firefighters, police officers and rescue workers who were willing to risk everything. That lasting impact of their sacrifice may be immeasurable, but it’s what I chose to focus on this year on the anniversary of the attacks. It may not bring any more clarity to what unfolded that awful day, but it offers at least a small measure of solace.

After hundreds of columns on a variety of subjects, I can’t think of many topics I haven’t addressed in more than 15 years of musings. With the exception of politics, for the most part, I’ve opined on the biggest topics of the day to the most minute of life’s tidbits, and just about everything in between. I never envisioned composing a column on a pair of ruby red high heels, but I’ve long since passed the stage of selective pickiness. Besides, experience tells me to go where the story leads. That leads us to recent news regarding the most famous pair of red slippers described as one of America’s most treasured pieces of memorabilia. The shoes, worn by Judy Garland as she played Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” still garner a collection of “ooohs” and “aaahs“ when fans get a glimpse of the magical pumps Since the movie’s premiere, the glitter-adorned shoes have made numerous appearances across the country and, perhaps, the most famous pair rests in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. Don’t let the most famous description confuse you. Like many props in major productions, there were numerous pairs of red slippers on the set during the filming and not the same ones were used in every scene. Garland reportedly wore four pairs during the filming. In 2005, one pair of those famous slippers was stolen from a museum in Garland’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, removed from a smashed glass see Ruby slippers > page 15

Bulldogs put in dominant performance in 58-0 rout By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Goochland didn’t waste any time setting a dominating tone in its Sept. 7 contest with visiting Central Lunenburg. The Bulldogs scored early and often in a 58-0 win over their first James River District opponent of the young season, establishing their position as a contender for another district title.
Goochland took the opening kickoff and quickly scored on a five-play drive that set the mark early. The Chargers never recovered, largely due to another stellar effort by a Goochland defense that is quickly becoming notorious. Still in the first period, the Bulldogs mounted another sustained drive that ended with Connor Popielarz’ 30-yard sprint to the end zone and the
Bulldogs were up 16-0. Devin McCray closed the period with a 35-yard run and the Bulldogs enjoyed a 23-0 lead when the opening stanza concluded. Early in the second quarter, McCray found Chase Smith for a 35-yard scoring strike that made the score 30-0. That lead was secured by a defense that didn’t blink against a stout Chargers offensive line.
The Chargers recorded 53 plays on offense, and 50 of them were runs, an effort that netted less than 100 yards. “That’s impressive,” coach Alex Fruth said referring to that defensive effort. It didn’t get any better for the Chargers in the third quarter as Popielarz took a screen pass and rumbled 38 determined yards for a touchdown. “He did a great job of catching the ball first, keeping
his feet moving and turning up field. That was a great effort,” Fruth said. Kameron Holman added another touchdown on a 50-yard pass reception and run. Hunter Williams scored on a five-yard run early in the fourth quarter and Dakhari Burgess covered 29 yards on the ground for his second touchdown to complete the scoring, and the shutout.
McCray’s three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground earned a spot as a finalist for this week’s Richmond Times-Dispatch Player of the Week. “Every week we are getting better, getting stronger,” McCray said after the game. “I thought what we put in in terms of the passing game for the week was really built see Football>10

Goochland volleyball comes back to sweep Chargers By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s volleyball team recently got through a very busy stretch of its schedule. The Bulldogs played three matches in three days, two on the road and one at home, and went 2-1 in that stretch. On Sept. 6, the Bulldogs swept Buckingham 25-17, 25-11, 25-9. Mary King had nine kills for the Bulldogs, while Margaret Black had five kills. Ilaria Russell had 21 digs for the Bulldogs and Ellie Spencer had five aces. The Bulldogs went four sets against Region 2B foe Maggie Walker in a 21-25, 25-6, 25-14, 25-15 final on Sept. 5. Black led Goochland with 13 kills against the Green Dragons, while King added 11. Trinity Wonderling had 21 assists and three aces, while Spencer had 40 digs and Blair Bussells had 14 assists and three kills. The Bulldogs started the stretch with a loss on Sept. 4 against Collegiate 25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 8-15. Spencer had 28 digs in the loss to the Cougars. Ilaria Russell had 20 digs, Bussells had 13 digs and 12 assists and Wonderling had 13 assists as well. Bulldogs coach Rachel
Football continued from >9 around keeping it simple for the reads and protraction and he took advantage of that,” head coach Alex Fruth said. “Tonight was a great step forward for Devin and the wide receivers.”
Jacobsen wrote in an email that her team handled the threegame stretch well. “Being able to come back from a deficit is hard,” she wrote. “I think that was the most challenging part of the week as we started with a loss. I think they rose to the challenge,” she continued. “Being able to turn the game around is hard and they proved this week that they are able to do that,” Jacobsen added. Jacobsen wrote that her team has been steadily improving this season. “I’m seeing improvement for sure,” she wrote. “Without any practices between the past three games, we’ll have some things to work on for sure, but I know they’ll be ready for our next match.” Several of the players who made big contributions on the stat sheet during the three-game stretch are players who Jacobsen wrote have been standing out this season. “Mary King, Margaret Black, Trinity Wonderling and Ellie Spencer have all made an impact this season,” she wrote. “This is not to say that the rest of the team isn’t doing an incredible job, but these players are bringing great energy and experience to the court. We’re lucky to have them.” Goochland hit the road
again to Cumberland on Sept. 11 and is scheduled to host Bluestone on Sept. 13, weather pending.
The coach said weather prevented full contact practices all week, so he depended on his players to problem solve and make adjustments to defense the Chargers. “This was not an easy week to get ready for,” Fruth said. “We asked these guys to learn a new defense that needs a bunch of guys trying to do
new jobs. “To get a 58-0 score like tonight, you have to be doing something right,” Fruth said after the game. “It’s really nice to see those guys adjust on the fly and go out there and figure it out.” Fruth said the game exemplified a philosophy embraced by the team.
CROSS COUNTRY Goochland’s cross country team competed in the Pole Green XC Classic at Pole Green Park on Sept. 8 and performed well in the meet. On the girls side, Grace Juran led the way for the Bulldogs with a 30th place finish after running a 20:51. Zella Warner finished 52nd with a 21:32, Emmy Paulin was 64th with a 21:47, Anna Kate Wirsing was 89th with a 22:30 and Victoria Spooner was 103rd with a 23:00. Marissa Schroder finished 157th, Elizabeth Owens was 190th, Caroline Black was 191st and Nadia Esposito was 201st. On the boys side, John Williams was the top finisher for Goochland in the boys championship. He finished 153rd with a 19:16. Jackson Hoffler was 162nd with a 19:21, Joey Cornell was 218th with a 20:40 and Reid Dameron was 238th with a 22:09. Photo by Billy Fellin Max Jarrell was 242nd, Ben McCray was 246th, Rusty Goochland’s Mary King (21) earned 20 kills over two games for the Bulldogs volleyball team durFender was 249th, Geoffrey ing its three-game stretch over three days from Sept. 4-6. Staunton was 252nd, Alex GOLF golf team won a quad-match Buckingham’s 202. Cole Pollard Thompson was 253rd and with a 165 over King William’s shot a one-under 35 to earn On Aug. 28, Goochland’s 173 and Bluestone’s 196 and medalist honors in the match. Luke Agee was 254th.
“The thing we say a lot is all gas and no brakes,” Fruth said. “We want to go as fast as we can and as hard as we can and leave it all on the field. I was happy with this effort and focus.” The next challenge for the Bulldogs is in the form of a road game, but offers more of the same preparing for a
run dominated, always speedy and physical Nottoway football team. Fruth doesn’t mind taking the show on the road. “While you have to love playing at home, I’ve always enjoyed getting on the road,” he said. “I like the idea that we get to go on a business trip and competing versus anoth-
er team that is physical, plays downhill…. and is going to pound the ball.” Goochland’s contest against Nottoway was moved from Sept. 14 to Sept. 12 in order to get the game in prior to the arrival of Hurricane Florence. The game was still played at 7 p.m. at Nottoway.

Local drive-in hosting Burt Reynolds tribute Appearance by iconic car will be part of event honoring actor By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In honor of movie icon Burt Reynolds, the Goochland Drive-In theater will be hosting a tribute to the star on Sept. 12
Ruby slippers continued from >6 case and gone, it seemed, forever. But, thanks to the dogged determination of FBI agents who worked the case for more than a decade, the shoes were recovered, and earlier last week, the beleaguered agency put the famous shoes on display. The shoes belonged to Hollywood memorabilia collector Michael Shaw who loaned them to the museum for display. Now, the mystery surrounding the theft has not
(tonight). The event will feature a showing of “Smokey and the Bandit,” the 1977 hit that is arguably one of Reynolds’ most well-known roles. Reynolds, who died on Sept. 6 at the age of 82, was also known for his performances in the film “The Longest Yard” and the television series “Evening Shade.” To Goochland Drive-In owner John Heidel, organizing the tribute was an easy deci-
sion. They’ve already seen a strong response from area fans, he said, and he counts himself among those whose life was impacted by the star. As to which of Reynolds’ films to show, that was also something of a no-brainer. “‘Smokey and the Bandit’ was his biggest box office hit, and the second most popular movie of 1977 right behind “Star Wars,” Heidel said. He was just a kid when the movie came out, Heidel said,
but he fondly recalls seeing Bandit’s black Pontiac Trans Am and encouraging his father to trade in his Ford Pinto for one just like it. “He never did,” Heidel confirmed, “but I held onto the dream of owning one, and after many years of searching and saving, was fortunate enough to acquire a low-mileage original several years ago. And whenever I take it out for a drive, I always meet a lot of nice people who come up to
share their memories of Burt and ‘Smokey and The Bandit.’” The event tonight will feature an appearance by a Bandit Trans Am, a look-a-like contest, and a selection of pre-show Burt Reynolds clips. Gates open at 6:15 p.m., with the show starting at 7:45 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 4-11. The Goochland DriveIn is located at 4344 Old Fredericksburg Rd. in Hadensville.
been solved, and officials would only say they recovered the shoes through a sting operation, and no suspects have been arrested. The search for the sequined slippers took a variety of turns in the 13 years they were missing, including an extensive search of a lake where the famous piece of Americana was dumped. When a man contacted the FBI a year ago offering to assist the agency in obtaining the shoes, the case gained momentum and eventually led to the recovery. And, agents announced they have suspects and asked
the public for information regarding the robbery. The shoes have been described as “the holy grail of all Hollywood memorabilia” and are worth a reported $2 million. Apparently, the perpetrator discovered that priceless art or irreplaceable pieces of memorabilia are not exactly hot commodities, and the whereabouts of the shoes during their 13-year absence remains a mystery. The returned shoes now belong to the insurance company that paid Shaw $800,000 for his loss, so it looks like they may be the real winners in this
bizarre tale. Who knows if those shoes will ever return to that museum in Grand Rapids, but the public will get more chances to see another one of those four pairs of shoes from the 1939 classic. After a hiatus from their position at the Smithsonian to allow experts to refurbish the
shoes, they return for exhibition next month. What is truly amazing about this story is the resounding popularity of a film that seems to entertain generations of Americans and its ability to capture the imagination of a country eight decades after its release. And, while finishing this
