Goochland Pet Lovers will be holding its 2nd Annual Shuck Your Paws Off Oyster Roast from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Deep Run Hunt Club. Event Chair Martha
Winston continued from > 1 nity organizations, Winstons’ civic-minded spirit shines through. She is the immediate past chair of the Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee (MSAAC), the current secretary of the Goochland Education Foundation (GEF), a member of the Teen Mental Health Task Force, and an active volunteer at the middle and high schools. In 2017, she was selected to participate on the steering committee for the Facility Master Planning Project to determine future capital improvements and development of Goochland schools. She is a former member of the Board of Directors for CASA and a long-time volunteer with the Goochland Christmas Mother program. Winston is also a longtime supporter of Goochland’s Habitat for Humanity and Goochland CARES. Winston earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison University and a Master of Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently, she works as a Training Specialist/ Senior Instructor in the Nuclear Training Department with Dominion Energy where she oversees the training programs for instructors at the Surry, North Anna, and Millstone power plants in Virginia and Connecticut. Winston and her husband
Bowden, who also chaired the event last year, said the Pet Lovers organization was extremely encouraged by the success of last year’s inaugural event. “Last year, we were just getting started with our capital
campaign, said Bowden. “This year, as we approach the opening of the new animal shelter, we are excited to celebrate the success of the capital campaign and look forward together to a new era in pet rescue and adoption in Goochland.
To Tom Winfree, Goochland Pet Lovers Chair, the future is looking bright indeed. “We will shortly open the new shelter, and know our community will be inspired to pitch in even more as our vision for the future expands to include edu-
cational programming, emergency medical care, volunteer engagement, dog parks and a Rotary Club Exercise Trail. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the Oyster Roast are available at www. goochlandpetlovers.com.
Corey, who is the Director of Supply Chain Operations with Health Trust Supply Chain, are the proud parents of two daughters, Goochland High School students Berkeley, a senior, and Addisyn a freshman. Winston is also the daughter of Patricia and Edward “Steve Fleming and the younger sister of Keesa Fleming, all county residents. Winston believes that no matter age, ethnicity or any other attribute, every person deserves to feel special every day and especially during the holidays. One source of inspiration which helps keep Winston fixed on doing all that she can to be a source of support and motivation for everyone she encounters comes from one of her favorite writers, the late Maya Angelou: “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed. Winston encourages local businesses, schools, churches and organizations to become actively involved and join her in supporting The Christmas Mother Association, which provides food, clothing, and toys for children and families in need who might otherwise have a bleak and joyless holiday season. Cindie Valentine, association president, said “The board and I are delighted that Kavis will represent our organization this year. Scratch, dent or ding? No complaints here By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it comes to vehicles, I can safely say I’ve never been a car salesman’s dream. In fact, my guiding principle regarding car ownership has always gone something like this: buy OK-looking, used-but-well-maintained vehicles, drive them until the wheels fall off, repeat.
This plan, I admit, isn’t perfect. Driving something that could have voted for George Bush — the first one — means forgoing certain luxury amenities like heated seats, back-up cameras or decent air conditioning. If something falls off or gets broken, the chances of easily finding a replacement part can be best judged by how hard the guy at the auto parts store laughs when you ask.

It all began at the deli. Standing in line last Sunday night waiting patiently to purchase meat for the following week of lunches, I felt a tug on my arm and was greeted by an old friend. It was one of the “school” dads that has a group of kids who have attended school with my children since kindergarten. “I don’t have to ask what you are doing,” I joked to him. We exchanged small talk, mostly about the children and their progress, and the many years we’d attended everything from recitals to field days together. When the subject turned to employment, I asked him about his job at Dominion, and his reaction should have alerted me to the impending doom that would be Hurricane Florence. “They’re talking 20 inches of rain,” he said with a startled tone. It was the first I’d heard of the impending storm, or certainly the first time I’d actually paid any attention to the forecast. As I moved to the produce section, it was immediately evident that most folks had gotten the news long before me. There wasn’t a cucumber left in the house, or any other type of fresh vegetable. It seemed like Virginians were heeding the early warnings and making their traditional grocery store buyout runs before the storm arrived. I headed for my standard backup plan of peanut butter and jelly, a sure staple of our emergency kit, but, again, no luck. The shelves were already laid barren by a frantic group of shoppers who, by appearances, were preparing for the apocalypse. I surrendered and left the store with only the sliced ham and turkey, see Hurricane > page 9

Clip with care to avoid water pollution Contributed report
One effect of the warm summer weather is the growth of vegetation. Vines, grasses, native plants, invasive plants, annual flowers, vegetables, bushes, trees and more are all busy growing. Checking around our county landscape, it is obvious property owners like to keep their land wellclipped and groomed. What some may not know is that clipping and removing vegetation contributes to water pollution. Not only does sediment escape from wellgroomed areas to waterways, but chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus escape into water too. Sediment is considered a pollutant if it is transported into a waterway due to human activity. Anytime soil has no vegetation, it is prone to erosion. Eroded soil (AKA sediment) is a major pollutant in the Chesapeake Bay. Bare spots in a yard or a ditch that is devoid of plants very likely contribute to sediment pollution. Two important chemicals
in water quality are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is easily dissolved in water. Phosphorus attaches to soil particles. Both of these chemicals increase the growth of plants and are considered plant nutrients. When too much nitrogen and phosphorus are added to waterways, the result is growth of algae. Algae growth blocks sunlight, physically clogs aquatic habitats, and, as it decomposes, it removes oxygen from the water. These situations are potentially fatal to aquatic life. Aquatic life fatalities begin the breakdown of the food chain. Nitrogen comes from commercial and natural fertilizers and decomposing organic matter among other sources. If fertilizer is used on a yard and the soil is not tested first, inappropriate amounts are being spread and money is being spent unnecessarily. Farmers, for example, take soil tests all the time because they don’t want to spend money on extra fertilizer and realize the implications of the chemicals escaping into waterways.

Animal and human waste are natural fertilizers containing nitrogen. If animal waste is not managed, its chemicals degrade water quality. Waste from small pets can easily be taken up before allowed into storm drains, creeks, and rivers. Waste from large pets, such as horses and goats, can be redistributed on the land to encourage pasture/hay/garden growth or put under shelter until needed. If left in unattended piles that are sitting on a pervious surface or not under a roof, manure nutrients will leach out into the soil and groundwater system. If a septic tank is not pumped out every 3 – 5 years, it runs the risk of overflowing. The drain field can also become clogged. This allows nitrogen and other chemicals to be released into the groundwater system. Over half of the phosphates in lakes, streams, and rivers come from detergents. The future of good water quality is not hopeless. A soil test will reveal what chemicals are specifically lacking in the soil for plant growth. Soil
test boxes and instructions are supplied by the local Extension office. Once a test has been submitted and the analysis is returned, soil amendments can be added in appropriate amounts to enhance plant growth. Plant growth inhibits erosion of the soil minimizing sediment pollution. Plants also act as a big sponge to soak up and use the nutrients that would otherwise flow off the land into the water. Vegetation planted specifically to catch nutrients in this way is called a vegetative or conservation buffer. There are many community groups, nonprofit organizations and government agencies that participate in and support the planting and maintaining of buffers for the purpose of improved water quality. Everyone living in a community is responsible for the best water quality possible for the present and future health of their little part of the Earth. So get those plants to grow, grow, grow for improved water quality and revisit the question of “to clip or not to clip?”

Hurricane continued from > 6 and scurried home to watch The Weather Channel to see exactly what Florence had in store for us. The forecast was dismal and it appeared Richmond might be in a direct line of impact, and surely would receive inches and inches of rain even if the storm passed south of the city. As the storm altered its predicted course and slammed into North and South Carolina, I joined many others in a collective sigh of relief. On the positive side, we had enough water and peanut butter to last a month. As life slowly returned to normal around here, Florence was wreaking havoc on our southern neighbors, and it didn’t take a genius to realize what could have been had the storm ticked just a little to the north. On my return to the grocery store, its shelves still only
half full and dotted with huge empty spaces where water once sat, there was almost a sense of disappointment that the hurricane billed as the big one missed us. Some complained the situation had been over-hyped, milking a natural disaster for ratings and using misery as a form of entertainment. For others, the good fortune of being out of the storm’s violent path left them with a feeling of neglect or solitude. And, of course, more than a majority of the people I spoke with complained that the weather service had issued less than accurate predictions prior to the storm. I suppose advanced age has instilled a good sense of “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” philosophy in me, and I don’t exactly understand the disappointment or annoyance. Late Friday evening, I proceeded to the place that is second only to the National Weather Service regarding storm information: the local
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County Waffle House. While sitting at the counter waiting for a waffle for one of my children, the conversation was brisk regarding the region’s good fortune. Some laughed about the possibilities while others lamented the plight of the millions who still find themselves dealing with Florence, but one elderly gentleman had the most prolific view on the latest weather. “There are two kinds of people when it comes to hurricanes,” he said. “There are the ones who have lived through one and the ones who haven’t.” This time, we are lucky enough to be included in that latter referenced group, and, if one lives long enough, you’ll find yourself in the first. Either way, I was just thankful that our community was spared this time from the upheaval and heartbreak those wind and waves can bring, but also mature enough to know that next time, we might not be so lucky.

Schedule change doesn’t faze Bulldogs in 30-13 win By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
The character of a football team is often judged by the way they react to adversity and their ability to adjust to changing circumstances. The Goochland Bulldogs got an ample dose of both as they traveled to Nottoway to take on the Cougars last week.
The game originally scheduled for Sept. 14 was moved up to Sept. 12 due to concerns posed by approaching Hurricane Florence. “It’s always tough when the schedule or routine changes, but I thought we did a good job rolling with the punches and accepting the fact that we only control our reaction and focus to what happened once things kicked off,” head coach
Alex Fruth said. Additionally, things didn’t start well for the visitors. Goochland took the opening kickoff, but fumbled to an aggressive Nottoway defense. The miscue proved costly as the Cougars took over in Bulldog territory, and scored first with 6:51 in the first quarter putting the Bulldogs in an unfamiliar position, trailing 7-0.
Late in the first quarter after the Bulldogs tied the game on a screen pass from Devin McCray to Dakhari Burgess, Sam Brooks recovered a fumble. Perry Snead Johnson made the Cougars pay with a 40-yard touchdown run and the Bulldogs assumed a 14-7 lead. But, Nottoway answered when they scored their sec-
ond touchdown of the evening when Snead Johnson fumbled and Nottoway took over, again in Goochland territory. Quarterback Cameron Reekes scampered 25 yards for a touchdown and Ronaldo Hernandez’ extra point was no good, so the Bulldogs still maintained a one point advantage with six minutes to go in the first half. The Bulldogs took over
on the ensuing kickoff, beginning a drive from their own 45-yard line, but the Cougars defense stiffened and forced a punt, a 55-yard effort by Jacob Hayward. The Cougars closed out a determined first half effort with an up the gut drive that consumed the remainder of the clock but netted no see Football>12

Roundup: Galaxy U12 team wins division at Blue Ridge Cup By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland Galaxy hit the road for the Blue Ridge Cup on Sept. 1-2 and brought home some hardware to the county. The U12 travel team won their age division during the tournament, taking home the title in the championship match by a score of 4-2. The Galaxy competed in the Samba Division, Bracket A of the U12 classification and opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over SOCA Charlottesville 07. The team followed that up with dominant 9-1 win over the Orange Fire. Then, on Sept. 2, the Galaxy beat Central Virginia United FC 3-1. The final match was against BeachFC 07B Black Dynamo, the top team from Bracket B.

Nadia Esposito was seventh, Marissa Schroder was ninth and Taylor Gagnon was 10th. On the boys side, the Bulldogs took on Buckingham and Prince Edward on Sept. 12 and came in second place. Buckingham won the event with 31 points, followed by Goochland with 62 and Prince Edward with 63. John Williams was the highest-finishing Goochland runner with a third-place finish. Jackson Hoffler finished sixth for the Bulldogs. Goochland is scheduled to host Amelia, Cumberland and Randolph-Henry on Sept. 19. The Bulldogs will be hosting its home meets on Sept. 19 and Oct. 17 at Leakes Mill Park, just down the road from the high school. Previously, Goochland had run a course that began and finished by the sign in front of the school along Route 6. Goochland Athletic Director Joe Fowler wrote in an email that the park is a “better location and course for extra point made the score 30-13. “I think our run game is really off to a good start,” the coach said. “One of the beauties of how we approach each game is that we anticipate getting a handful of touches for a number of our backs. the passing game is progressing. “Devin is taking strides in the passing game, but we are constantly talking about the fact that we have room to grow,” Fruth said. After a sluggish start, the defense had a shutout second half. Fruth said playing from the opening kickoff is vital to the team’s future success. “The defense played solid but it took a half of football
overs, bad penalty here and there and had to struggle with Nottoway’s physical offense,” Fruth said. The team has an open weekend in their schedule on Sept. 21, but Fruth said the layoff could be a double-edged sword. “The long layoff is going to be nice for any injuries that we have and a change take care of academics, but a change in routine is always a negative,” Fruth said.
They return to the field against Buckingham on Sept. 28. Fruth is not taking a confrontation with the rebuilding Knights lightly. “They won’t be an easy out,” he said. “We will have to play physical on defense and offense. We’ll also have to protect the ball and stop our bad habit of turning the ball over.” Game time is 7 p.m. at Goochland.

to get to that point,” he said. “Playing physical teams is something we have to be ready for from the opening kickoff. We can’t take a half to get ready to compete,” the coach added. Given the short week, a tough physical Nottoway offense and some penalties and turnovers, Fruth was satisfied with the team’s first road effort of the season. “We didn’t play a perfect game – couple of turn-

TRANSPORTATION (2040 MAJOR THOROUGHFARE PLAN) Goochland County plans to amend its adopted 2035 Comprehensive Plan to incorporate the 2040 Major Thoroughfare Plan (MTP) as a supplement to Chapter 5 – Transportation. The MTP designates the general or approximate location, character, and extent of future transportation facilities, including roads, throughout the entire County. It also (1) provides for the orderly development of the roadway network as land development occurs; (2) identifies transportation assets and needs for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit; and (3) establishes the long-term transportation vision for the County and identifies incremental steps to achieve the vision. The 2040 MTP will replace the current 2005 MTP and contains updated recommendations for all three service areas of the County. Where appropriate, multi-modal facilities are recommended to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. Recommendations included in the draft 2040 MTP include the following:
