UNDER THE RAINBOW While no tornados were reported in Goochland during the severe weather delivered by remnants of Hurricane Florence last week, the county did see plenty of wind and rain. Fortunately, Kristen Kelley was able to snap this lovely post-storm shot of a rainbow arcing over Goochland High School once the danger had passed. Shown enjoying the afternoon are Leah and Luke Kelley.

An upcoming workshop in Goochland will help educate those who own barns about the very real threat of barn fires and how to best prevent them. And while some may not realize the tragic consequences a barn fire can have, local veterinarian Tom Newton has seen them firsthand. Around twenty-five years ago, as Newton recalled recently, he was asked to care for a sick foal that had been brought to his Little Hawk Farm in Crozier. The little foal was cold, wet and weak, Newton said, and so after it was treated it was placed in a bed of straw with a heat lamp overhead. see Barn safety > 5

Obituaries CRAIG B. BRIGHT Craig Bartley Bright, of Manakin-Sabot, passed away peacefully in the late afternoon of Sept.18, 2018. In the weeks before his death, he was surrounded by the love and support of his family and his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, BRIGHT Ann. Born
May 23, 1931, Craig lived an incredible life, enhanced by a brilliant mind and an enviable dry wit. He amassed an impressive array of academic achievements, which included skipping two years of primary school before graduating first in his class from both high school and Colgate University. While at Colgate he was also awarded membership to Phi Beta Kappa Society. He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of
the Harvard Law Review. After serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Air Force, Craig went on to an esteemed career as a managing partner at the law firm of Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler. He also co-authored several influential legal books and served as Chairman of the Board of Ethics for the New York State Bar Association. Travel and family were particular passions for Craig and he combined them often. A voracious and adventurous traveler,
he kept meticulous itineraries and entertaining journals of his many exotic trips, which took him to the farthest corners of the earth, into the tombs of Egyptian kings, on African safaris and, most frequently, to his beloved island of Virgin Gorda. For all his accomplishments, Craig was by far most proud of his family. He and Ann raised five children together and he delighted in them, their spouses and his 10 grandchildren. They will always treasure the time they
shared with him. He was a truly exceptional man. Craig’s family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers at the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and the Hospice of Virginia at Retreat Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 28, at The Hebron Presbyterian Church in Manakin-Sabot. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a donation be made in Craig’s honor to The Hebron Presbyterian Church, 1040 Shallow Well Rd., ManakinSabot, Va. 23103.

Despite the efforts of the farm manager, who was in the barn at the time and used fire extinguishers and a water hose to try and extinguish the flames, the fire spread to the wooden structures in the barn. Tragically, although the manager was able to suppress the fire until firefighters from Company 2 arrived, the foal did not survive the blaze. A mare in the adjacent stall later died from burns and pneumonia resulting from smoke inhalation, and
several other horses had burns to their ears and backs. Newton says he and those who worked with him learned many lessons on that tragic day, lessons he hopes others will take away from the safety event on Saturday, Oct. 6. The annual Barn Fire Safety event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Deep Run Hunt Club on Manakin Road. Historic school marking 100 years

n the western part of Goochland County, in the parking lot of the Second Union Baptist Church, sits a small white, two-room structure known as Second Union School, later incorporated as Second Union (Rosenwald) School (SURS). The school was built in 1918 to educate black rural students in grades one through seven who were excluded from the same educational opportunities as white students in Virginia. The story of this little schoolhouse is an account of the history of the United States and it represents one stepping stone that was put in place earlier by many others who preceded its construction. Though Second Union School was facilitated by Julius Rosenwald, it was the local citizens who supplied the majority of the funds and labor for its construction. It is
a story that continues today, now that the little schoolhouse is a recognized museum. This museum does not simply preserve the past, but it also illuminates the efforts and struggles of the dedicated individuals who embraced the aspirational thoughts and documents of those who laid the foundation for educational equality. The undertaking continues as our country remains “a work in progress,” and progress is what this school’s story and other schools like it speak to -- educational and racial equality. On Oct. 6 and 7, 2018, we will celebrate the 100th Year Anniversary of SURS. The celebration begins Saturday at the School with food, drink, music, and games. Sunday, at the Central High Cultural and Educational Complex, we will have a banquet with Mr. Kenneth B. Morris, Jr. as our honored guest
speaker. Mr. Morris is a prominent and well recognized authority and speaker on the history of Black struggles in the United States. His family background is quite impressive with both Fredrick Douglass and Booker T. Washington as part of his lineage. He is the founder of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI). Second Union Rosenwald School has many friends and supporters whose roles will be noted in the day’s celebration, from former attendees and graduates of the school and other Rosenwald schools. Goochland County continues to play a major, supportive role that was led by the late Rebecca Dickson (County Administrator), Goochland Historical Society, county schools (wherein SURS plays a prominent role in their SOLs), parks and recreation, board of supervisors,
and the school board. Mr. Charlie Bryan, Mr. Joe Leisfeld, Mr. Wayne Dementi, John Tyler Community College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Lowe’s Foundation, Mrs. Stephanie Deutsch (author, historian, advocate, and greatgreat granddaughter-law of Julius Rosenwald), Mrs. Sandra Barkley, and The Booker T. Washington National Monument (Hardy, Va.) are just a few of those who have supported and continue to support the efforts of SURS. Finally, in this story, is the remarkable friendship that existed between Mr. Julius Rosenwald and Mr. Booker T. Washington. Mr. Rosenwald was one of the richest men in the United States and a prominent philanthropist. Mr. Washington became one of the see School > 7
Nature vs. torture: An afternoon of Cricket Classics By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Having lived in the country for the better part of two decades, I ve fallen in love with so many aspects of rural life that I once thought I never could. Chief among them: the particular quiet and calm that
can only be achieved once you ve gotten far outside of the reach of the car horns, emergency sirens and garbage trucks that provide the soundtrack to every minute of city life. Needless to say, it didn’t take long to appreciate being able to hear the birds through an open

Letters to the Editor Stealing of campaign signs a violation of residents’ free speech Dear Editor, I remember when the movie “Signs” by M. Night Shyamalan premiered. The film left us scratching our collective heads because the underlying story was not what we thought it would be about. I would also bet that in the weeks before Election Day in every community around the country people are again left scratching their heads when the “signs” - in this case, their campaign signs - go missing from their roadways, yards, or vehicles. Citizens are left feeling violated because those signs show support for their chosen candidates and encourage others to vote. We may not agree with the messages shown on the signs, and some people think that taking them is just a prank performed by some misguided folks having fun. But stealing signs is much more than just vandalizing. It is an infringement on another’s freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution Are there any legal consequences for this behavior? Yes. It is important to note that destroying, defacing or stealing political signs is illegal and could result in serious consequences in the state of Virginia. When found guilty, the perpetrator could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor that could result in hefty fines. However, there has to be a burden of proof which is often difficult to validate. So, what can you do? Please leave these signs alone. Let freedom of speech prevail. Change our society with your vote instead of doing something illegal. Sincerely, William E. Quarles, Jr. Co-Chair, Goochland Democratic Committee. see Letters > page 8

One month down… With the school year now in full swing, most teachers and students across the county have settled into the routines that will see them through the next eight months. This photo of Randolph Elementary School’s four kindergarten teachers, however, was taken several weeks ago, just as they were gearing up to welcome their students to their very first day of school. To Maryanne Tysinger, one the county’s longest tenured teachers at nearly 30 years, many of things still remain the same year after year—including her own feelings about the start of the new school year. “The first day is the first day no matter how long you’ve been teaching,” said Tysinger. “I still get the same excitement.” Shown are, from left, Kim Austin, Whitney Neiditch, Beth Alvis and Tysinger.
Cricket continued from >6 the couch and preparing to dive headfirst into a book I’d been wanting to start for weeks. If I recall correctly, I was about two or three pages in when I first heard that unmistakable sound: Chiiiiiiiiirp, chirp, chiiiiiiiiirp. Chiiiiiiiiirp, chirp, chiiiiiiiiirp. Never one to flip out over the occasional insect or spider in the house — it was a cricket, after all, not a scorpion or a black widow — I tried to ignore it and hoped it would simply find its way out the same way it came in. Also, it sounded as if it was behind a very heavy, fully loaded bookshelf, and I certainly didn’t feel like rearranging any furniture. I’m sure you can guess how this went.
While there was an occasional reprieve for a minute or two, the next several hours featured an almost uninterrupted performance of the Cricket Concerto. Chiiiiiiiiirp, chirp, chiiiiiiiiirp. Chiiiiiiiiirp, chirp, chiiiiiiiiirp. Unable to focus, I turned to my most trusted ally in matters like these: the internet. A quick search turned up only a paltry handful of suggestions, including playing hypersonic bat sounds found on YouTube (didn’t work), lowering the temperature of the room (also didn’t work), and finding the cricket a mate so it would stop displaying what one website explained was typical mate-finding behavior (quickly decided against even attempting this).
Eventually, at my wit’s end, I stumbled upon a website featuring an audio file of a sound purported to be one that every animal hates. I sent the dogs to the backyard. I hit “play.” I waited. What followed was a 45-second burst of sound that this particular member of Kingdom Animalia found pretty terrible indeed. It was a high-pitched tone that got lower as it got louder, sounding very much like incoming ordnance. It had a peculiarly potent anxiety-producing effect, and made the cricket noise sound like Mozart. It also worked, because — as soon as it was over — the now-angry cricket began screaming louder and more insistently that before. He also was, unfortunately,
now joined in his ire by my husband, who had come in from the garage lured by the terrible noise (or perhaps the bat sounds). I explained to him what I was doing, and he looked at me in that way a husband looks at his wife when he’s trying hard to convince himself she shouldn’t be committed. He went back to the garage, and I went to read in another room on the other side of the house. The cricket stayed for another two days. Eventually he did leave us, and peace returned to the living room. I can’t say I missed him at all, but he did remind me of one lesson I’ve had to learn more than once when it comes to country life: the wildlife was here first. Sometimes we must simply face the music.

Residents urged to remember key voter registration deadlines
Letters continued from >6
Spanberger should come clean about what she represents Dear Editor, I have a problem! I’ve noticed that Abigale Spanberger never states that she is a Democrat. Not in her TV ads, not on her signs, not when her people pass out literature to businesses. In fact, the public is told that she is a Republican when it comes to business policy. Actually, she is a “booming economy” denier. She is a Democrat. Group think is not only a requirement, but is demanded by her political party. So, as a Democrat, she is against the lowest unemployment numbers in history for black and Hispanic Americans, and the lowest in decades for white Americans. She is against the

increases in wages, against lower taxes for those who work and the small businesses who make the jobs. She would repeal the tax cuts that have given every working Virginian more money to take home. She is for open borders and therefore in support of illegal immigration that is diluting cherished American values of freedom and free speech. They all come from socialist countries — they are used to having their freedom’s removed by government. Which means she supports the concept of sanctuary cities, allowing felonycommitting illegals safe harbor from law officers. She believes in a permanent progressive government to rule America, not the United States Constitution. I know that because she is a Democrat. Socialism is one “pit stop” before total government control. She sup-
ports government controlled healthcare that decides who gets treated and who doesn’t, not the patient, not the doctor, the government bureaucrat decides. The Democrat party that does not believe in free speech, and uses violence, paid for by democrat benefactors. One more point. I am confused how a CIA person could not have known that the school she taught at was actually an incubator for known terrorist training and devising deadly plots against her own country. and things we can observe/ test for ourselves (based on “Evidence”). Everyone uses both sources, but not to the same degree. Even scientists rely heavily on evidence first discovered by earlier workers (Newton famously said that he saw farther then others because he stood “on the shoulders of giants”), albeit requiring that such sources be both accurate and subject to confirmation. To that base, they add new information (data) and explain precisely how it was obtained. At the opposite extreme, fantasy novelists and various other artists create worlds less burdened by reality, using that emancipation to explore beauty, morality, and other topics ill-suited to scientific analysis. Government needs to work mainly in the scientific mode when fashioning policy. Our philosophical compass is preset by the Constitution. “We
hold these truths to be selfevident…” is a blunt statement of assumptions, our ideals. Self-evident! Policy is the recipe we follow in striving to reach those ideals and factual information plays the role of ingredients. In our guts we know that nonsense like “alternative fact” is a poor substitute. While truth is often elusive, it is out there somewhere. Good bakers do not replace shortening with bacon grease because that spoils the cake. Real facts are similarly important for legislative policies dealing with nature. And science is the best system humans have ever developed for discovering verifiable information about nature. “Truth isn’t truth” has scant appeal as a logic framework. The most obvious problem with alternative facts is that they are infinitely flexible: groups with opposite ideologies can invent countless fabrications that align neatly with their views. That approach gets us nowhere. As I write this letter, monster Hurricane Florence is stalling just offshore, sucking up extra seawater from an overheated ocean. The damage it inflicts over the next few days will be extraordinarily expensive, probably lethal. Scientists have warned us to expect more ‘rare’ events like this (e.g., last month’s western fires, last year’s Hurricane Maria, etc.) as the result of climate change. Not just a few cherry-picked scientists, but a staggering 97 percent of climate scientists agree that
global warming is artificially inflated by human activities. Such agreement among scientists (a notoriously skeptical lot) is stunning. Yet, our president dismisses the matter (“Chinese hoax”) and current congressional enablers cry “Controversial!” When asked directly about climate change, a few just announce “I am not a scientist!” Think about that. When our car won’t start do we just declare, “I am not an auto mechanic!” or do we find someone who is? We value expertise, people who know how to work with real evidence…real facts. In the District 7 Congressional race, Abigail Spanberger is clearly the realists’ pick. One cannot work in federal law enforcement and CIA anti-terrorism intelligence by cherry-picking only information bearing happyface stickers. Facts matter. By contrast, Dave Brat ducks, asserting “The best way to care for our environment is through economic growth and free markets” at the local level. He does not explain how a worldwide climate crisis will be fixed via local free markets. His statements on the environment are science deserts, a turtle retreating within its shell. We need science and facts on this and many other issues. We need Spanberger’s commitment to reality.
Voters must be clear on what is fact and what is fiction Dear Editor, Our beliefs — the things we accept as true — can be split into things we are told (based mainly on “Authority”)

Juran leads way for Goochland XC in home meet win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Usually, cross country teams get to know their home courses thoroughly and familiar with the twists and turns. That wasn’t exactly the case for the Goochland cross country teams in their home meet on Sept. 20, but it didn’t have any effect on their performance.
The Bulldogs girls team swept the top four positions in the girls race in a meetwinning effort. The boys team put three runners in the top 10 and finished second in their event. The course was run at Leakes Mill Park, just down the road from Goochland High School. Athletic Director Joe Fowler wrote in an email that the Leakes Mill course pro-
vided a better location for the runners and spectators as well as better sight lines and emergency access to the course, if needed. “It was a new course, that’s always rough,” Goochland’s Zella Warner said. “When you run at a home course, you’re familiar with it and you run it every day. It’s a lot of fun to run with your teammates. But, it was a little hard today because I’d never run here
before.” Warner’s teammate Grace Juran was slightly more familiar with the Leakes Mill Course as she had run the course previously. “I’ve actually run the inside a couple times on morning runs,” she said. “So, it was nice that I wasn’t going in blind. Running it faster was a bit different and being timed as well.” Juran led the way for the
Bulldogs with a 22:42 for first place overall in the home meet. “It felt good,” Juran said of her race. “It was shaded, which was great. The weather held up as well.” Warner was second with a 23:15, followed by Anna Kate Wirsing in third with a 24:37. Marissa Schroder was fourth with a 25:56 to complete the Goochland sweep of the top four positions.
Goochland’s Taylor Gagron was sixth with a 27:05, Maddie Muniz was seventh with a 27:11, Caroline Black was eighth with a 28:58, Annaliese Rogerson was ninth with a 30:10, and Sarah Creasey was 10th with a 32:01. Rachel Ferguson was 13th overall with a 32:33. The Bulldogs scored 16 see Bulldogsl>11

Roundup: Busch goes worst-to-first to win at Richmond By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Kyle Busch didn’t have the best starting position when the green flag fell on the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Sept. 22 at Richmond Raceway. In fact, he had the worst. Busch started at the rear of the field due to unapproved adjustments to the car after damage during qualifying. But, despite the setback, he worked his way up through the field throughout the race. After a restart on Lap 332, Busch and Brad Keselowski battled back-and-forth over the course of 40 laps. But, Busch prevailed and secured the win at Richmond in the second race of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series playoffs. It was Busch’s 50th career win in the top-tier series and his sixth win at Richmond Raceway. It was his first win in the fall race at Richmond and he swept both races at Richmond Raceway in 2018. “It’s really good to have the win,” he said. “Any time you can punch your ticket to the next round that makes it even better. I don’t know what was eluding us from winning in
Bulldogs continued from >10 points to win the meet by a large margin. RandolphHenry was second with 47 points. Cumberland participated in the event, but did not register a score. Warner said that the girls team has really come together this season and “always comes through” no matter what. “We always work together
the fall. But, we got it done. The car wasn’t great early, but we made some adjustments and it really woke up. Winning anywhere is cool because you know you get to celebrate with your team and take home a trophy. The fall one is more special because it’s late in the season. It feels good to get a win later in the season.” Busch and Keselowski started their battle on Lap 341 when Keselowski passed Busch after the only caution of the race. Busch came back and was side-by-side with Keselowski on Lap 352 and the two were within a car-length of each other for the next 21 laps. During that time, the two were drag racing down the back stretch, side-by-side through the corners and not allowing either car to gain much of an advantage. “It was a little nervewracking,” Busch’s crew chief Adam Stevens said of the battle. “He was pressing us as hard as we could to keep us behind him and Kyle was pressing as hard as he could to get by him.” After Busch cleared Keselowski on Lap 363, Keselowski started fading
from Busch’s bumper. Kevin Harvick, who sat on the pole for the race, caught Keselowski and passed him on Lap 372. Harvick closed on Busch and Keselowski during their lengthy battle and pounced on Keselowski once he started to fade. Harvick tried to run down Busch, but ran out of time to catch leader and finished second. “We were definitely gaining a little bit of ground,” Harvick said. “We didn’t have enough time ot get all the way to him. But, our guys did a great job rebounding after last weekend and doing what we had to do this week to put ourselves in a good position for next week. So, solid night.” Martin Truex Jr. finished third, Chase Elliott finished fourth and Aric Almirola finished fifth. Former Chesterfield resident Denny Hamlin finished 16th. It was the first time that Richmond hosted a playoff race. Previously, the track was the final race prior to the playoffs beginning and had held that spot since the Chase format was introduced in
and it’s a lot of fun,” she said. “I think we have been the best Goochland has ever been. We’re really close and really fast.” Juran agreed that this season’s Bulldogs squad is very strong. “We haven’t have this strong of a team in a long time,” she said. “States is definitely on our minds, but nothing is guaranteed, so we’re just going to keep working at it.”
Goochland’s girls team made history last season by qualifying for the state meet for the first time in the program’s history. Warner said that she hopes to up the ante this season. “We want to win regionals,” she said. “This year, we’re really shooting for a good spot.” On the boys side, John Williams led the way for the Bulldogs squad with a second-place finish in 20:39.

TRANSPORTATION (2040 MAJOR THOROUGHFARE PLAN) Goochland County plans to amend its adopted 2035 Comprehensive Plan to incorporate the 2040 Major Thoroughfare Plan (MTP) as a supplement to Chapter 5 – Transportation. The MTP designates the general or approximate location, character, and extent of future transportation facilities, including roads, throughout the entire County. It also (1) provides for the orderly development of the roadway network as land development occurs; (2) identifies transportation assets and needs for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit; and (3) establishes the long-term transportation vision for the County and identifies incremental steps to achieve the vision. The 2040 MTP will replace the current 2005 MTP and contains updated recommendations for all three service areas of the County. Where appropriate, multi-modal facilities are recommended to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. Recommendations included in the draft 2040 MTP include the following:

(Rte. 650) from River Road W. to the Henrico Co. line to a threelane, undivided roadway with multi-modal facilities • Connect Patterson Ave. to West Creek Pkwy (Rte. 1250) with a two-lane, undivided roadway • A network of roads is needed for the northeast quadrant of Patterson Ave. and Hockett Rd. (“Southern Prime Economic Development Area”) that would keep Hockett Road at two lanes and avoid existing residences and recreational amenities. The new network will be determined by future traffic studies. Pet Lovers event will offer oysters, music Contributed report
Goochland Pet Lovers will be holding its 2nd Annual Shuck Your Paws Off Oyster Roast from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Deep Run Hunt Club. Event Chair Martha Bowden, who also chaired the event last year, said the Pet Lovers organization was extremely encouraged by the
success of last year’s inaugural event. “Last year, we were just getting started with our capital campaign,” said Bowden. “This year, as we approach the opening of the new animal shelter, we are excited to celebrate the success of the capital campaign and look forward together to a new era in pet rescue and adoption in Goochland.”
To Tom Winfree, Goochland Pet Lovers Chair, the future is looking bright indeed. “We will shortly open the new shelter, and know our community will be inspired to pitch in even more as our vision for the future expands to include educational programming, emergency medical care, volunteer engagement, dog parks and a Rotary Club Exercise Trail.”
Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the Oyster Roast are available at www. goochlandpetlovers.com. The event will feature a silent auction, a wine pull, music by Suzie and the G-Tones and plenty of oysters, grilled chicken, award winning chili, desserts and an open bar. All proceeds will benefit Goochland’s new animal shelter.
