Report: Soggy 2018 hampered projects By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Last year, as near record-setting rain soaked the Central Virginia region, few probably eyed the forecast more glumly than Derek Stamey, Goochland’s Deputy County Administrator for Operations. Stamey, who presented an update on ongoing construction and capital improvements during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Jan. 2, opened his remarks by noting that just about every project in the county has been see Weather > 3

Bowles continued from >1 a devoted family man and a loving father. “To him, each one of his children was No. 1,” said Quarles of her father, who died on Jan. 17 at the age of 97. “He never made it a competition, and he was always there when you needed him — all you had to do was call him and he would be there.” That gift for answering the call was something many Goochland residents would come to appreciate starting in 1953, when Bowles opened his medical practice at the corner of Sandy Hook Road and Whitehall Road. It was the only doctor’s office in Goochland at the time, and Bowles quickly became a trusted physician for residents throughout the county and beyond. Office visits cost $1 then, and home visits were $2.

what will eventually be the registrar’s office, has had nearly 40 percent of the possible construction days lost to weather, and improvements to lighting and parking at the Central High School Cultural and Education Complex remain incomplete. That doesn’t mean that no work has been getting done: despite weather patterns that included torrential rains, tornadoes and hurricane-force
wind moving through the area, progress has been made on several projects, including those for the county’s Social Services and Information Technology departments. Work also continues to move ahead on improvements to the Courthouse complex and on HVAC replacements in several county facilities. While Stamey was clearly frustrated with Mother Nature’s apparent indifference
to time schedules and projected completion dates, he told board members he has tried to simply keep pushing forward. “There’s not a whole lot a contractor can do when we’re getting 2 inches of rain or 15 inches of snow,” Stamey said, but he and his staff continue to work with the various contractors and engineers to ensure work is completed as quickly as possible “without sacrificing quality.”
During a time when segregation was very much a part of the social landscape, Bowles “saw everybody,” noted his son-in-law, William Quarles. While he would go on to practice for nearly five decades — including many years working alongside his son, Dr. James H. Bowles Jr., to whom he would eventually turn over the practice — Bowles also found time to serve his community in many other ways. In addition to interrupting his undergraduate studies at Virginia Union University to serve in the United States Army during World War II, in 1972 Bowles would become the first black member of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors. He served in that role for over three decades, his sonin-law said, and was a key player in helping to usher in the kind of forward-thinking practices that would create a solid future for the county.
“He had a sense of what the people wanted for Goochland and how they wanted it to grow,” said Quarles. “He really understood what would make Goochland great.” Members of Goochland’s African-American community will no doubt remember Bowles not only for the work he did in the name of fairness and equality — including serving as a founding member of both the local NAACP and the Goochland Recreation Center — but also for the way he was able to bring people from all walks of life together. Goochland resident Wendy Hobbs, who served with Bowles on the board of the Goochland Recreation Center, described Bowles as a trailblazer, a mentor, and “the epitome of a fine gentleman.” “Everything he did, he did with dignity and grace,” Hobbs said. Bowles was always working to build bridges between different areas of the commu-
nity, Hobbs said, “and he was always trying to figure out what he could do to improve other people’s lives.” Bowles’ son, Dr. James H. Bowles Jr., said Monday that the best way he could think to describe his father was “to make a list of all the qualities that would make a perfect person — and then at the end of the list would be his name.” “He was truly the finest man I have ever known, and will ever know,” said Bowles. In addition to his three children, Dr. James H. Bowles Jr., Ruth Quarles and Jacqueline Simmons, Dr. James H. Bowles Sr. is survived by his wife, Jane Allen Bowles, and a sister, Ruth Jackson. Members of the community are invited to celebrate Bowles’ life at a ceremony at Goochland High School this Saturday afternoon. A private service is scheduled to follow at Emmaus Baptist Church.

n Jan. 15, Goochland’s American Legion Post 215 held its annual Post Ever Lasting, a ceremony held to honor fellow Legion Members who have passed away in the previous year. During this year’s ceremony, American Legion Post 215 honored Earle Stanley Johnson, Hamilton Turpin Cobbs (whose brother, Thomas Richard Cobbs, is pictured above pictured above), and Ned S. Creasey. Johnson, who died on Nov. 17, was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Air Force, as well as a member of the Cabell Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 215. Cobbs, who died on March 28, served his country in the United States Air Force and his county as a fireman at Holly Grove Fire Department. The great Henry Ford
Goochland icon: Bowles’ life was ‘service over self’ “This it is to be a man of the highest type: to be and not seem; to do and not simply to talk; to have the right ideal, the true motive and patiently to transform conduct in accordance with it. “ Ossian Everett Mills Over the course of his life, which spanned nearly a century, Dr. James H. Bowles played many different roles. He was a loving father, a healer, a leader, and, as many of those who knew him recall, a trailblazer. He served his country with honor, raised his family with love, and cared for countless Goochland residents as a trusted and respected physician. “He was a person who loved life, loved people, and he was a person who loved family,” said his son-in-law, William Quarles, last week, as Bowles’ family prepared for a final farewell set to take place this weekend. There are a lot of things Dr. Bowles did, but there were also things he didn’t do. Despite being born in a time when racial division was prescribed by law and inequality often went unaddressed, Bowles did not let bitterness or ill will prevent him from working to build bridges and strengthen his community. Instead of criticizing or pointing fingers, Bowles assumed a leadership role in the community and worked to help create the future Goochland residents enjoy today. Instead of using his success to shield himself from the injustice he saw happening around him, he rolled up his sleeves and worked for change. In short, Bowles was the kind of leader — the kind of human being — that should serve as an inspiration to all of us, no matter our background or station in life. He was a man of action, and of virtue, and we are truly grateful for all he did on behalf of Goochland County.

No, it’s not the one you’re thinking of. While there’s no doubt the Detroit auto magnate has an enormous impact on American culture and changed transportation for decades to come, the Henry Ford that I remember did not enjoy the same name recognition. For many students who attended J. R. Tucker High School in the 1960s, Ford’s influence was immeasurable and most of us were much more familiar with teacher Henry Ford than the inventor of the Model T. When Tucker first opened its doors, the campus was unfinished and the school felt isolated or even ignored. English Composition teacher Henry Ford was there from day one. His immaculate dress and distinguished aura made him somewhat of an enigma, a sort of diamond in the rough scenario. Like most of my fellow students, I didn’t realize the value of two semesters in Mr. Ford’s class, and didn’t immediately appreciate his dedication to language and the written word. But, no one could attend Ford’s classes without gaining a new respect for words and how to group them to convey a thought or tell a story. I suppose I was in the infancy of becoming an aspiring writer, so the emphasis on composition didn’t bother me. In fact, it held my interest more than any other class, and English was one subject that came easy to me. I was under the false impression that I knew how to write -- and maybe I did have an inclination to the art -- but Mr. Ford’s class enlightened me to just how little I knew and how much I had to learn. For a year, I listened to a man who recognized potential in every see Ford > page 16

Girls BB wins 41-38 thriller By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
G
OOCHLAND -- The seconds appeared to stretch out as the ball seemed stuck in midair. A swarm of Goochland and Buckingham players scrambled to grab and secure the loose ball as the regulation clock ticked dangerously close to zero. Goochland was leading by one point. But Buckingham was in range of the basket, trying to take away the lead and the win. The crowd of players parted. Goochland sophomore Gabby Ragone took hold of the ball and tossed it long to Blake Thomas. The senior seemed to break away for the easy bucket, but it didn’t count as the clock froze at five seconds. But Goochland held onto possession, and Ragone had the ball again. She moved it towards half-court and looked to hold it and drain the clock. Buckingham fouled her, sending her to the line. Bulldogs avenge early loss Goochland rolls past Maggie Walker 57-36 By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor

Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette
Goochland’s Gabby Ragone led her team with 14 points in Friday’s victory.
OOCHLAND - The last time they played Maggie Walker Governor’s School, the Goochland Bulldogs were opening their 2018-19 season. A mix of postponements and Goochland Football’s memorable run to the 2018 state championship game had pushed the boys basketball team’s opener all the way back to mid-December in Richmond. Maggie Walker, who
was playing its sixth game of the season at that point, surged in the second half to win by 10. But after that game, the Bulldogs found their rhythm as the season progressed, winning four straight prior to Thursday night’s game. Now it’s five straight. Six different Bulldogs found the net within the first 12 gametime minutes. Deion Harwood unleashed eight second-quarter points and reached double figures by halftime. Kameron Holman netted six in the third. Freshman J.B. Bell netted doubledigits. And the Bulldogs’ shooting game had a humungous helping hand from a
dominant defensive stand that created turnovers, rolled out the full-court press and brought down rebounds on both ends of the court. Goochland won 57-36. The loss was avenged. “That’s a good program,” Quincy Snead, who scored 11 points for Goochland on Thursday, said of Maggie Walker. “They have a good coaching staff and players, and they work hard, so this is a good win for us.” “Our guys were a lot more focused about this game,” Goochland head coach Preston Gordon said. “I was really proud of the way these guys bounced back from the first time we played them.” see Boys > 8

Goochland Wrestling excels in Cumberland Staff Report
Goochland Wrestling on Tuesday, Jan. 8 headed to Cumberland High School for a tri meet with Bluestone and host school Cumberland. Goochland won the matches by final scores of 48-27 and 64-18. Cody Nash got the Bulldogs going with a second period pin. Goochland Wrestling head coach Mike Nadder noted that he had previously pulled him from the starting lineup because “I felt like he wasn’t wrestling up to his
potential and he responded the way I wanted him to. “He didn’t fuss about it, he just focused on practice and he got his position back and has really picked it up a notch.” Daniel Thompson wrestled tough at the 145 pound weight class; he lost a close one to his opponent from Cumberland, but Nadder pointed out that he wrestled a really smart match against his opponent from Bluestone to win 9-1 by a score of 9 to 1. “We are still fighting some inju-
Girls continued from >7 The ball swished through. Ragone set up from the line again… …then netted her second attempt. The last-ditch three-point try by Buckingham was a no-go, and the home crowd cheered as Goochland Girls Basketball came away with a wild, narrow and thrilling 41-38 triumph over Buckingham. After the Bulldogs came into Friday's home game having lost three of their previous four, they have now won two of their last three. "It was big - real big," Goochland head coach James Harris said of Friday's game. "We needed it...getting this win is gonna help build that confidence." Ragone led her team with 14 points. She was money on free-throws, shooting six-for-six. "I've been coaching Gabby since middle school...basically this whole team we've had since middle school when I was at the middle school level. I've seen the potential," Harris said. "Gabby...is the key. Your guard is your key to the court. She's the general, she sees things, she's young and I'm trying to mold her into how to play that position." As the first quarter progressed, Goochland ramped up its defense to stifling levels, going after the ball aggressively and racking up steal after steal. Senior Justice Tibbs grabbed the ball right out of a Buckingham player’s hands on the full-court press, and the Bulldogs parlayed Tibbs’ takeaway into a three-pointer from Anjelyn Carter that pushed Goochland into a 9-8 lead. Ragone factored into a couple of gems that capped the first quarter. She turned a steal into an easy bucket off the fast break, then converted a rebound into an assist to Blake Thomas, who broke away for the layup.
ries and illnesses, so we are forfeiting several weight classes,” Nadder noted. He said that they will have to back out of their quad meet with Douglas Freeman, Mills Godwin and Henrico because postponements due to snow have pushed the district tournament back to the day after that quad meet. “I can’t take a chance on my guys getting hurt right before the district tournament,” Nadder said. “That’s when I want to be up at full speed. That is the match that I really was looking forward to.”
Goochland's Jalyn Burns caught fire in the second quarter, rolling out seven points including an and-one and chipping in a block. Ragone in the quarter shot four-for-four from the free throw line, and Thomas had one trip to the basket in which she dribbled the ball in a semicircle around a defender and arched the ball through the hoop inside. The Bulldogs took a six-point lead at the half, but saw it evaporate on a slow start to the third quarter. But after the team called a couple of timeouts, Goochland started regaining its rhythm. Tibbs briefly took over on offense, netting four straight points, and after Thomas found a point from the line, Lilly Yutzey sparked the home crowd on a breakthrough putback to re-energize the Bulldogs and extend their lead to three points going into the fourth. Tibbs zigzagged her way around defenders in the closing stages and rebounded the ball well, and Thomas netted an insurance bucket before assisting Ragone on a layup to grow the gap. Ragone in the final minutes stepped up the aggression on defense as she reached for steals and chased after takeaway opportunities. After Buckingham surged on six straight to threaten for the lead, she got back the ball, outran most of the field and maneuvered around the sole defender in front of the net to send in the layup. Buckingham made one last charge, narrowing the lead down to one point, but Ragone stepped up again to deliver the game-sealing free throws. The Bulldogs with the win improved to 8-6. Buckingham is now 9-3 after entering Friday's game as the #2 team in the James River District - one spot ahead of Goochland. The Bulldogs are slated to host Bluestone on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and head to Buckingham on Monday, Jan. 28 for a 7 p.m. rematch.

There were still aspects of the game with which the Bulldogs struggled, Gordon noted – they didn’t shoot the ball exceptionally well from outside – but they were able to get to the free throw line and attack the rim better on Thursday. “I’m proud of the way we were able to make those adjustments,” Gordon said. Harwood consistently put the ball through the net throughout the game; he led the way for Goochland on a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, and he added five steals. Bell chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds; he reached double-figures on a lightning-fast pass from Harwood in the fourth quarter. “I love the intensity that we have,” Gordon said. And there was another thing Goochland had this time around that it didn’t have in its season-opener. It had home-court advantage. A healthy home crowd came out to watch Thursday’s game, the Goochland Cheerleaders pumped up the team and the Goochland Band

literally rocked out, mixing in a wide range of tunes from Rush’s Tom Sawyer to Fall-Out Boy. “Kudos to Mark Givens for that,” Gordon said of the band members’ support at the game. The Bulldogs spread the wealth almost evenly to open the game, as five different players scored to give Goochland a 10-9 lead after the first quarter. Kyin Carter then sparked the home crowd near the top of the second when he netted two off of a flurry of offensive rebounds, and the Bulldogs’ four scoring leaders on the night – Harwood, Snead, Bell and Holman in the third – heated up to gradually grow the home team’s lead throughout the contest. “We were all in rhythm, playing hard,” Snead said. Gordon said that the Bulldogs did a better job defending Maggie Walker on Thursday, and that’s been the key for his players. “Our guys were locked in,” he said. The Bulldogs on Friday furthered their win streak to six on a 58-44 road victory over James River District opponent Buckingham. The Bulldogs will host Bluestone on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Buckingham on Monday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. “Our goal is to make it farther than last year, so we’re taking it one game at a time,” Snead said, “and just focusing on one thing at a time.”

Ford continued from >6 student, and raised the level of consciousness of the thousands he instructed throughout the years. He was the first teacher who appreciated my interest in writing and took the time to nurture and refine what he called raw talent. I’m not exactly sure what he saw in me, but he offered me the chance to learn how to write and construct read-
able copy. Mr. Ford provided tools essential to the craft, tricks of the trade and taught me something he called the perfection of simplicity. He opened a world of wonders by introducing a group of mostly immature students to great artists like Hemingway, Steinbeck and O’Connor. I suppose there are thousands of stories of inspiring high school teachers who had major influences on the lives of the students they taught,

but Mr. Ford instilled in me an interest and dedication to the written word that would last a lifetime. After years enjoying a career I truly love, I often think of those days in Mr. Ford’s class in that barren campus that seemed forever unfinished. As a managing editor, publisher, photographer or reporter, I carried his words of wisdom close and often relied on one of those little tricks learned in his class to improve a story or make it
more readable. His encouragement and personal interest in my journey provided a confidence that couldn’t be printed on a sheet of paper, or erased with the hands of time. Sitting in Mr. Ford’s class, I was awakened in a literary sense, and came to the conclusion that composing and arranging words would be a lifelong pursuit for me. In my wildest of dreams, I envisioned that someday that early fascination

with words would actually become a career. The pursuit took years, and many teachers refined and tweaked my abilities after Mr. Ford. But, it all began in that small classroom at Tucker with Mr. Ford and his ability to relate to all students and a belief that a little encouragement can provide immeasurable guidance to those willing to listen. After years of teaching English, Mr. Ford became a guidance counselor and
assisted even more students as they prepared for college or a career. Ford’s commitment to the students he taught is not unique but serve as a reminder of the thousands of dedicated educators whose efforts are largely unrecognized. But, the impact on the kids they inspire is a lasting tribute to teachers like Henry Ford and others like him who make lasting impressions, change lives or shape careers.
