Education Foundation announces 2019 grant recipients

Honoring our Veterans

For Fleming, joining up was first step in distinguished career

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland Education Foundation (GEF) recently awarded its 2019 Strategic Innovation Grants, presenting eight awards totaling nearly $15,000 dollars. The grants will be used to support a number of innovative and challenging projects, ranging from an experiment to compare traditional vs. hydroponic gardening to the creation of sensory awareness theatre-viewing kits for students with autism. On Oct. 15, 2019, Goochland County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley and GEF Executive Director Cynthia Brown joined board members Liza Dameron, Christina Griffith, Alison see GEF > 2

Editor’s note: Recently, the Goochland Gazette asked our readers to share the story of their own military service and how it had impacted their lives. Goochland County resident Vernon Fleming was kind enough to share his experience with us.

n the fall of 1970, I was a freshman at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia; the Vietnam War was still in full swing. The draft lottery system had been implemented the year before, and the lottery process involved selecting draftees based on their birth date. I vividly recall receiving a letter advising me that my lottery number was 19, out of 365. After asking a few friends what this meant, I was told to start packing my bags. see Fleming > 3

Oyster Roast to help fund medical care at pet shelter The Goochland Pet Lovers will be hosting their third annual Oyster Roast on Nov. 8, offering locals the chance to support local pets while enjoying delicious food and entertainment. According to Goochland Pet Lover’s Martha Bowden, one key focus of this year’s event is to promote the creation of a medical fund to provide needed care for animals when they come into the county’s shelter. The group has already raised $1.5 million through a capital campaign for the county’s much-anticipated spacious new animal shelter, which will take the place of the former cramped and outdated facility on Hidden Rock Lane. Bowden said the group also hopes to increase awareness of what see Oyster Roast > 2

Fleming continued from >1 I visited the campus Army ROTC department where a member of the cadre confirmed that college students could be drafted. He said that if I joined the ROTC program, I would be protected. I signed up for ROTC at that point. At the start of my junior year of college, I had to make a major decision whether to enroll in the advanced Army ROTC program or drop out. The advanced program included a small stipend, but required an obligation to serve 6 years after graduation. As a poor college student, the stipend was very attractive, and allowed me to be less dependent on support from my parents. In May 1974, I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army as an Air Defense Artillery Officer. I was married exactly one week after graduation. Ninety days later, I was in El Paso, Texas attending the Officer Basic Course. One year later, I was on a remote mountain top in the Republic of South Korea serving as a Hawk missile platoon leader, in charge of 75 soldiers. Fast forward three more years, I was back in El Paso, Texas, attending the Army Office Advance Course with

my wife and two young daughters. I had completed a successful command of a battery of over 120 soldiers and was close to being promoted to captain (O-3). I was faced with another decision: seek release from active duty service and return with my family to Virginia, apply for the Army flight (helicopter pilot) school or apply for a highly selective Army funded graduate program. With an undergraduate degree in Sociology, I was not confident that I could support my young family adequately. I applied for both the Army flight school and graduate school programs. I was blessed to be selected for both. Both included an obligation to serve on active duty for an additional four (4) years. The graduate school program was contingent upon being accepted at an approved, accredited university and majoring in an approved degree program. I applied to the MBA programs at UVA and William & Mary, with the goal of getting my family closer to our relatives in Louisa and Goochland. My GMAT scores were sufficient to get me accepted by both colleges. The Army approved me to attend with stipulations. I had to begin graduate school in January in 1979 and I had to complete the 2-year pro-

I resigned from active duty at the end of my ROTC assignment and accepted a position with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a purchasing manager. While with P&G, I traveled extensively, managing global teams and traveling to more than a dozen countries. I retired from P&G after 25 years and returned to Goochland in 2011. While in Cincinnati, I was able to join an Army Reserve unit and retired from the Army after 20 years of total service as a Lieutenant Colonel. Both of my parents had to drop out of school to work to help support their parents and siblings. My father was a blue collar worker and my mother worked as a domestic for most of her adult life. Conscience (I)

1 Samuel 24:5 “It came about afterward that David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe.” Without detailing this event, notice that “…David’s conscience bothered him…”. God’s word tells it like it is! Conscience is one of the unique God-given blessings planted in us. It is our internal alarm clock going off to either approve of our actions or accuse us of wrong-doing (Romans 2:15). As king, David seriously violated his conscience in the Bathsheba/Uriah drama. Conscience can change for the worse or the better. God can cleanse it (Hebrews 10:22) via Jesus.

Speak

Louder

Words have value, especially when they’re used to make a promise. But the most important thing about a promise is the action you take afterward. At Dominion Energy, we believe in taking action – to deliver on our promise to help people, communities and the environment.

Solar Since 2015, we’ve increased our solar panels in Virginia to over 2.9 million. We now own the 4th largest utility solar portfolio in America.

Wind We’re developing the largest offshore wind project in the U.S., which will produce enough energy to power 650,000 homes by 2026.

Community We promised to help out neighbors in need with our EnergyShare® program, assisting individuals and their families with bill payment and energy saving upgrades. As of today, the program has helped more than 850,000 people.

Lower Prices And to help residential customers, we’ve kept our prices 9%* below the national average. Turning promises into reality is what defines us. That’s why we’re proud to invest in what we believe in, and what’s important to you.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Goochland veterans continue to give to their community

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

few days ago, almost entirely by accident, I stumbled on a section of the U.S. Army’s website devoted to photography. There among the dozens of pictures were numerous shots of soldiers conducting training missions at home and serving overseas, as well as several portraits of World War II veterans who had been decorated for valor. Of course, as captivating as the photos were, they still couldn’t quite measure up to another collection of military photos that I happen to be familiar with. You probably haven’t seen them, but chances are you have your own trove of similar pictures that hold just as special a place in your heart. The photos I’m referring to belong to my family, and include the one featured here: my grandfather, Frank McNally, piloting an SB2C Helldiver during WWII (he is in the first plane, closest to the camera). This one is a family favorite, a shot likely captured with the intention of one day showing it to his children and grandchildren. It’s one of many snapshots we have from those years, glimpses into a time that helped shape the person my grandfather would become and the incredible life he would go on to lead. Like so many members of the rightfully-named Greatest Generation, he asked nothing in return for his service and never boasted of what he and his fellow servicemen did. Instead, it has been left to the photographs to tell the story, and left to his children and grandchildren to make sure those stories are preserved. One of the things I enjoy so much about my profession is being welcomed into people’s homes to conduct interviews, see Photographs> 11

Goochland football clobbers Central, 61-13 By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

A brisk wind greeted the Goochland Bulldogs as they exited the bus Friday night to face a determined Central Lunenburg Chargers unit. Central was looking to rebound from a tough narrow loss to Nottoway the previous week, while Goochland was coming off a dominant 53-0 blowout victory over Blue Ridge School. With a wet field and cold temperatures, the contest promised to pit two offenses, who both opt first for the run, against sound defenses. One of those offenses delivered in a big way; Goochland rolled past Central, 61-13, for its eighth win in a row. Quincy Snead took the kickoff and returned the opening salvo to the Chargers’ 40-yard line and followed up with a 28-yard run to the Chargers’ 2-yard line. Quarterback CJ Towles scored on a keeper to cap the 40-yard drive, and Goochland went up 6-0 early in the first quarter. The Bulldogs scooped up two fumbles on Central’s ensuing possessions and capitalized on one of them when Snead scored from six yards out to make the score 13-0. Although the Chargers’ defense showed signs of defiance, the lack of offensive output stymied Central’s efforts. Devin McCray scored the Bulldogs’ third touchdown on a 30-yard run late in the opening quarter. Goochland led 20-0. A powerful performance by Goochland’s special teams, especially the return game, routinely provided short fields for the Bulldogs’ offense. “Our return teams are game changers,” said Goochland coach Alex Fruth. “We keep getting short fields

for our offense, which allows us to either get points or pin the opponent deep into their territory. Each week we focus on trying to put our kids in the best spot to make plays on special teams, which seems to keep paying off.” Freshman kicker Tyler Black also received team kudos for his efforts. Black was credited with two touchdown-saving tackles on kickoffs. Twenty-four hours earlier, Black had booted the game-winning field goal to

secure a win for the JV team over the visiting Chargers. “This kid had a great week,” Fruth said. “Being a kicker, especially a freshman, can be really lonely, but this kid really made plays for us this week. Late in the game, he made two great touchdown tackles, which really excited the entire team.” By halftime, it was a running clock and Goochland played its reserves for most of the second half. “Thought this game was

a great opportunity for us to ultimately get a ton of guys playing time with different combinations of players on the field,” Fruth said. Goochland Football (8-1 overall, 7-1 in Virginia High School League games) with the victory remained no. 1 in VHSL’s top 20 football rankings ahead of no. 2 James Monroe (6-3) and no. 3 Brentsville District (6-3) in Region 3B. As Goochland prepares to end its regular season campaign next week at home

(Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.) with visiting Bluestone coming to town, the team seems close to full strength. “Getting through the end of the regular season is always tricky, but we are doing well in terms of health,” the coach said. “We are in a good spot right now.” Friday’s game is Senior Night, and Fruth said that this group is special. “Talk about another group of guys that have had an incredible run playing foot-

ball for Goochland,” he said. “Really looking forward to seeing how they end their football careers and what they go on to do next in life. These guys are going to really make things happen down the road.” And coming home after two road trips is just what the doctor ordered, according to the coach. “It’s really going to be nice to have a home game!” he said. “No change to our preparation - it doesn’t matter who we play, but how we play.”

For Verlander, it was a tough series, but a season to remember By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

B

aseball fans in Virginia overall may have had a clear-cut wish as to who they wanted to see win the World Series. It gets a little harder for fans in Central Virginia – namely in Goochland. In arguably one of the state’s strongest-ever representations in the Series as far as featuring the closest MLB team location-wise and multiple players who grew up in Virginia and/ or played for Virginia universities, hyper-local fans could choose to root for the Washington Nationals – who play their games only 2 hours away from Goochland – or the Houston Astros, whose ace starting pitchers include future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, an ODU grad and Goochland High School grad who won the World Series with his Astros in 2017, but had yet to earn a World Series pitching win. So when the final batter struck out in Game 7, the end result had a bittersweet composition. The designated local team won. But the team with direct ties to Goochland lost. And for Verlander, it was a tough couple of outings, especially considering how those two contests followed one of his best seasons to date. In 2019 he won 21 regular-season games – his best total since 2011 and his second-best

ever – and he struck out 300 batters in the 160game stretch for the first time in his career. This was also the year in which he crossed the 3,000-strikeout threshold with 3,006 regularseason K’s recorded across his 15 seasons in the Majors. He and his Astros also opened the playoffs strong, with Verlander earning the win in a 6-2 decision over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Dvision Series. But even though he’d continue to get the batters to swing and look at strike-three’s – he fanned 8 in Game 1 against the Rays, 7 versus the Yankees in an American League Championship Series game that the Astros would win 3-2 and 9 against the Yankees later in the ALCS – four losses followed, including two to keep him winless in the World Series. You can’t put it all on Verlander. While Game 6 was shaky – 3 K’s to 3 walks with three earned runs on five hits – he also had the misfortune of going head-to-head both times with Nationals’ pitcher Stephen Strasburg, whose performance was otherworldly as he pitched 8 and a third innings in Game 6, went 5-0 in the postseason and earned the World Series MVP award. And in spite of the early runs Verlander surrendered across both contests, his teammates’ bats also responded early, enabling him to keep his team in both ball games through the middle stages

until the Nationals tapped into their postseason modus operandi: using the clutch to shift into that extra gear of offense and bypass their opponents in the late innings. Verlander, his teammate Gerrit Cole in Game 1, Clayton Kershaw, Jack Flaherty – the Nationals were finding ways to get the ball past all of them. And when you have a phenomenal young talent in Juan Soto whose ceiling has yet to be spotted and you put him alongside veterans who can deliver like Howie Kendrick and the never-panicking Anthony Rendon, you get

this sort of magical, non-quantifiable formula that produces something special that MLB fans likely never expected to see – and probably will never see again. The Nationals faced five elimination games and won all five of them. That was literally unheard of – until this year. So for Verlander, it seems very safe to write this off as a blue-moon anomaly. Playoffs aside, it’s been a milestone-decorated 2019 for the ace pitcher, from achieving 3,000 strikeouts to delivering his third career no-hitter. And while he did surrender the most home runs of his career (36) in a very home-run-happy year for the Majors overall, he gave up just 64 earned runs – the second best after last year’s 60, which was the lowest he’s allowed when he’s started more than 30 games in a season – and 137 hits, his lowest with over 30 pitching starts in a year. He’s also not showing any dropoff, with four consecutive seasons of 16 wins or better. So if anything, expect more of the same from Verlander. But also: expect him to focus in on checking off one very blank box following a year in which he checked off so many. It’ll take another stellar display from the Astros’ offense, but if it’s extremely hard now to dispute the notion that the Goochland alum is among the best to ever play the game of baseball, then once he achieves that elusive World Series win on the mound, there will be no argument.
