Tower CUP request gets cold shoulder from residents Commission votes in favor of plan for Hermitage Rd. site By Roslyn Ryan Editor

While it isn’t possible to please all of the people all of the time, as the old saying goes, it could actually be possible to make all of them mad. And on Jan. 9, during a public hearing for a conditional use permit (CUP) to erect a 199-foot com-

munications tower at 966 Hermitage Road, Beacon Towers’ Jonathan Yates acknowledged that his group may have done just that. “We have made a lot of people upset, and we didn’t mean to do that,” Yates said, referencing the small

but clearly agitated crowd of people seated behind him. But, he noted, that did not negate the fact that the South Carolina-based company’s request for a permit was in keeping with the county’s own guidelines. Yates told Planning

Commissioners he understood that people had concerns, particularly those homeowners living near the 25-acre parcel where the tower would be located. Questions had been raised see Tower > 2

Tower continued from >1 during a June 26 community meeting about the visual impact of the tower, as well as what it might do to property values. But while representatives from Beacon Towers assured the commissioners that the tower would be well screened, unobtrusive, and constructed to the highest safety standards, those residents opposed to the project were having none of it. “Who is going to pay for the depreciation of our property?” asked one resident. “I have Verizon at my house and I never have a problem. else.” Another resident, who also lives near the site, presented the commissioners with a petition signed by 27 people opposed to the tower. “Every person we asked signed it,” he said. “And we got every property owner. This is a group of people who say we don’t want that in our neighborhood—and the citizens are unanimous.” Despite the vehement opposition from those residents in attendance, Planning Commission chairman John Meyers explained after the public comment period that the county could not deny a Conditional Use Permit simply because residents objected to

a project. “Cell phone towers have become similar to prisons,” Meyers said. “Everyone knows we need prisons, but no one wants one near them. Everyone knows we need cell phone towers, but nobody wants them in their backyard. It simply doesn’t work like that.” The commission ultimately decided to endorse the project, which will now go before the county Board of Supervisors. If approved, the CUP will stipulate that the tower must not interfere with any existing communications equipment, and must be neutral in color. The CUP will expire 90 days after the tower is no longer in use.

Free tax help available to low-income county residents through United Way Contributed report

With a mid-April tax-filing deadline just about 10 weeks away, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg is once again offering free tax preparation for households with incomes below $56,000. United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program officially began on Jan. 27, with 16 tax sites across several Virginia localities, including Goochland.

United Way’s local team of more than 200 IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers assist taxpayers with completing and electronically filing both federal and state returns. This program also encourages customers to think about ways to save, implement financial best practices and make plans for achieving financial independence. And for those with low to moderate income, the service helps eligible taxpayers take advantage of potential tax savings through the Ea Earned Income Tax Cred Credit (EITC). “United Way’s ta tax assistance proggram not only h helps ease the an anxiety and stress tthat comes with ttax preparation, bu but the service also promotes financial well-being, one of ou our nine Steps to

Success,” said James Taylor, president & CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. “Over the past decade and a half, this service has made a tangible difference for local families, particularly those who have taken advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit. This program saves money, reduces tax bills and increases the size of refunds for people who need it the most. We encourage all eligible families to take advantage of this free service.” In 2019, local United Way volunteers helped secure more than $3 million in tax refunds for 3,667 households in our area. Families who took advantage of the service received a total of $838,300 in EITC funds from the IRS. The average household income for customers was $22,900. The 16 United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance partner locations

across Greater Richmond and Petersburg are open at different times and days in order to accommodate a variety of schedules. Find more information at https://www.yourunitedway.org/tax/. A list of sites with operating times is available here.

Tax preparation help also available online United Way’s MyFreeTaxes. com service provides another convenient tax preparation method for households of any income level with simple (no schedule C, D, or E) federal and state tax returns. women. Each Troop operates independently, elects its own leadership, and plans its own activities and trips. Troop 710 is youth-led, meaning that the youth are responsible for identifying their activities and, as much as possible, planning and carrying out their activities. As Scouting is outdoors, Troop 710 Scouts camped over

35 nights last year. They backpacked over 120 miles, hiked, canoed, whitewater rafted, skied, biked, and kayaked in Virginia and four surrounding states. Along the way they performed hundreds of hours of community service and learned valuable life skills. For further information, email GoochlandTroop710@ gmail.com.

Caution

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Apostles John, Peter and Paul are in agreement. There are teachers, sometimes in religions (though not always) who mislead people. There are at least three characteristics of a false prophet to recognize. 1) they promote doctrines and religions pointing people away from the truth of God, the Bible and Jesus, 2) they promote all types of sexual immorality, and 3) they make themselves very wealthy by their deceitful work. Read 2 Peter 2:1-3. Do you love truth? If you’re interested in further study of God’s word, meet with us Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Details on our website.

Obituary PATRICIA JORDAN Patricia “Pat” Jordan died on January 20, 2020, at the age of 71 of a pulmonary embolism. She is greatly missed by her surviving brother, Tom and his wife, Janice; Pat’s twin sister, Pam; and members of my family, sisters, Delores, Teresa, Bonnie Lee; and my brother, David; as well as many friends. Pat was compassionate

to everyone she met, no matter how brief their encounter. Never a harsh word to anyone. She loved every animal on this planet - even the ladybugs that filled our sunroom every year. I, Robert (Pat’s husband), miss her more than words can express. I love that woman with every breath I take. She was my rock, my lover, my very best friend. Pat

loved me through the hippy years and throughout our 37 years together. After retiring with over 40 years at Verizon, we built our dream home on our homestead. She loved our dogs UBU - our Rhodesian Ridgeback who at six years old still acts like a puppy, chewing every remote and pair of glasses he can get; Penny - our bluetick beagle, who followed Pat

around constantly everywhere; then there’s Teko “Pat’s love of her life” Brussels Griffon. He was definitely mama’s boy. Both Penny and Teko still look for “mama” all day long. Pat loved fishing, bowling, day trips to orchards and just chilling out with me and the dogs. She was extremely fond of harvesting the crops that I planted. I planted, she har-

vested! My life now has a void which only time will tell if it can be once again filled with happiness. The house is empty without her. The dogs are my only salvation, as I must carry on for their sake. The pain of mourning her leaving me is overwhelming. I truly love that woman. As I write this, it is hard to see the letters printing through the tears I shed. I

miss Pat so VERY much. Her sudden death did not allow me time to prepare for such a great pain as I now feel. Goodbye Pat- I love you. I love you. I love you. If you would like to send a remembrance of Pat, please make a donation to the Goochland SPCA. Norman Funeral Home of Goochland, Virginia, is handling the arrangements.

Not unlike many cities in the 1960s, there was a time in Richmond when shopping was confined to one specific area, and finding that one special item required a destinationbased journey. Experiencing downtown Richmond as a youngster growing up in Henrico County provided a myriad of memories, and many of us will never forget the magical feel of a large department store, the hustle and bustle of a busy Broad Street with sidewalks full of shoppers. For all intents, it seemed like the big city as shoppers scurried through the endless displays in Miller and Rhoads or Thalhimers, the sound of their cluttering footsteps only

interrupted by the hint of a ringing chime when the elevator door opened. But those who yearn for those long gone memories of Richmond’s downtown district know that those blocks on Broad Street encompassed more than just two large and well-known department stores. It was an eclectic mix of clothing stores, movie theaters, newsstands, restaurants, and variety stores. It was truly a different era, a time when urban exploration wasn’t such a scary prospect, and going downtown promised a glimpse of a cosmopolitan life foreign to most of us. The experience never got old. I can’t count the times I boarded a bus at Willow Lawn and made the trip downtown. As a pre-teen, I joined friends for a visit to one of the many theaters to view movies. Later, the bus trip opened a world of musical possibili-

ties as I discovered numerous music stores located on First Street and Broad. As that interest evolved, members of my first band searched the many men’s stores for Beatle boots, a necessity for all 1960s-based groups. On many of those trips, I exited the bus at Second and Broad Streets and made my first stop at one of the earliest memories I have of Broad Street and downtown Richmond: the Planters Peanut Shop. Now, I’m not sure when the Taliaferros opened the small shop in Richmond, but it appeared it had been there longer than most of the other establishments. The store needed no advertisement. The smell of freshlyroasted peanuts was more than enough enticement for passerbys to stop in and shell a few. Peanuts roasted in floorstanding roasters with Mr.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

On a day for bad news, perhaps a fresh start By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When it comes to the past few hundred years of history, the calendar is full of truly wonderful dates to celebrate. July 4, 1776: America officially declares its independence from Great Britain. April 8, 1864: The 13th Amendment, which abolishes slavery in the United States, is passed. Feb. 23, 1954: The first polio vaccine is administered. Nov. 9, 1989: The Berlin Wall comes down. Unfortunately, as days off the year go, the 30th of Januaryy (today) does not exactly deserve any parades in its honor. In fact, it pretty much stinks. Just on this day alone, one could reasonably count at least half a dozen truly awful things that happened — from the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi (1948), to the bombing of Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.’s home (1956). The Tet Offensive happened today (1968), as did Ireland’s “Bloody Sunday” massacre of 1972. The first attempt on an American President’s life was

made on Jan. 30, 1865, when Richard Lawrence shot at Andrew Jackson (he missed), and then, exactly 147 years later, the first computer virus was unleashed. Finally, in case you thought Adolf Hitler was going to miss the chance to get in on this most evil of days, he didn’t: on Jan. 30, 1933, he was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. Given this preponderance of misery, I’d like to suggest that we attempt to reverse the fetid tide and turn Jan. 30 into a day of celebration. Celebrating what? Whatever you want.

Seriously … anything. Yes, with this proposal, we will now have at least one day on the calendar each year that can be set aside for marking both the miraculous and the mundane. Pastafarians (followers of “the world’s fastest growing carbohydrate-based religion”) can now have a day to fling fusilli in public without shame. People who love old-timey bicycles can tool through town unabashed. People who enjoy kazoo music can rejoice and be glad, so long as they do it in a sound-proof room far away from the rest of us. In the interest of full disclosure,

I should point out that my original plan was to simply do away with Jan. 30 altogether, but that seemed like more trouble than it would be worth in the long run (plus, in all fairness, I’m sure there were a handful of good things that happened on this date, I just can’t seem to remember any of them). So now, if you want to celebrate Labradoodles, or unicycles — or Labradoodles that ride unicycles — you no longer have to do so all by yourself. No matter how you want to mark it, today is your day. Let’s make it a great one.

Wondering why there has never been a day to celebrate dogs that drive cars? Now there can be.

Letters to the Editor Those ‘good old days’ were not always so good for everyone Dear Editor, Thank you for soliciting feedback on your article about “the good old days.” I found the article very provocative, really hitting a nerve. I grew up in northern Michigan during the 50s and 60s, so lived this time. If Katrina Holte wants to relive this, great, go for it! My take however, is much different. The “good old days” were most definitely NOT good for me or my siblings. It was a time of patriarchal households where women really had very few choices. My mother, typical of the time, did not have a skill set for any job except homemaking. She did not drive, did not ever have money to spend, did not make decisions, and although she was a caring mother, was not a happy person. The extent of her unhappiness I did not realize until much later. I also remember it a time of intolerance — round pegs into round holes, so to speak. You were expected to adhere to a very strict set of religious and societal rules, behaviors, and roles. Shame and guilt were the methods of keeping a children and adults in line. Physical punishment was not only accepted, but encouraged, resulting in feelings of humiliation. Love seemed conditional to me, upon expected adherence to norms of performance and behavior. Mental illness, depression, autism spectrum disorders, PTSD, and learning disabilities all existed during this time, but were not yet given the focus we have today on treatment or even acknowledgement. These conditions were swept under the rug, hidden, one more thing to be ashamed of. Often people experiencing these conditions were chastised. Again, no square pegs in round holes. My parents did the best they see Letters > page 12

Bulldogs outlast Nottoway 59-49, win 5 straight Four players score in double-figures for Goochland in Monday’s win By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND - Four quarters deep, junior Gabby Ragone was showing that she hadn’t lost a step off of her hustle. She dribbled around and on past defenders, zipped to the net on long drives with the help of her blistering pace and, in one particular secondhalf one-on-one matchup, snatched the ball away from her opponent around midcourt and dashed to the basket for the easy layup. “Gabby, she’s always going to be a person that’s going to give 110 percent, even if she’s hurt or not hurt,” said Goochland head coach James Harris. “She’s that passionate about the game … she’s going to leave it all on the court.” Ragone scored in every quarter and drained 8 of her 15 team-leading points in the fourth and added 7 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds to help Goochland outlast Nottoway 59-49 and remain unbeaten in James River District play going into Tuesday’s game. After Nottoway poked into an early 8-7 lead with a 6-0 burst, Ragone followed up the go-ahead 2-point shot off the short, aggressive drive from 6-foot-1 senior teammate Victoria Lopez by taking the ball away from the visitors, speeding down the court and drawing both the foul and the bonus free-throw attempt as she saw her layup fall through the hoop. Ragone hit the shot from

the line and ended the night by making all five of her free throws. She got three of her assists in a 6-0 spurt that put the Bulldogs up 31-18 at the half, and she joined teammates Lopez, senior Jalyn Burns and sophomore Emmy Paulin in getting the ball to a wide-open Kenley Warren, who knocked down five jumpshots for a 14-point evening. Two of the senior’s jumpers were key 3-pointers that helped her Bulldogs keep their

distance in the fourth after Nottoway slashed into their lead with a 12-0 run in the third. The visitors had in fact battled back to make it a 3-point game late in the penultimate stanza, but Burns, receiving a teammate’s inbound pass, netted the layup while drawing the foul, then landed the bonus point from the freethrow line. Burns knocked down 7 of her 12 game points in the second half and made four

of her five free throws on Monday. “She’s a senior, so it’s her last year, so I think ... now she understands: Okay, it’s the second half of the season, I’ve got to give it all I’ve got,” Harris said of Burns. “I can trust her, she’s going to make those clutch shots.” Lopez joined her teammates in netting double figures as she complemented her 9 rebounds with 10 points on offense. “Even when she’s not

blocking shots, just being there, hands up, makes a big difference,” Harris said. Goochland (11-5 overall, 11-0 in the James River District) headed into Tuesday’s home game versus Prince Edward having won five straight games. Last Tuesday, the Bulldogs routed Randolph-Henry 49-16 behind 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks from Lopez, 10 points, 2 assists and 7 steals from Ragone and 10 points from Warren.

On Friday, they defeated Amelia 52-33 behind a 23-point, 13-rebound, 4 assist night from Lopez. Ragone added 8 points, 7 steals and 6 assists and Burns delivered 7 points and 4 rebounds. Goochland will rematch Nottoway this Friday at 7 p.m. at Nottoway High School. Next Thursday, the Bulldogs will head to Buckingham County for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Goochland sweeps Randolph-Henry, wins 4 of 5 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Although he likes to score the ball, J.B. Bell had not really been a dunker before last Wednesday’s game. But when Randolph-Henry strung together a couple of baskets in the fourth quarter, Bell was called back to the floor. And when he received the pass from a teammate, the 6-foot-7 sophomore, with one arm, smashed the ball through the hoop while airborne to spark cheers from the home crowd and cement the momentum in his Bulldogs’ favor with 3:44 remaining. “The energy was up,” Bell said, “and it just made the crowd happy.” Bell’s dunk elevated him to a game-high 19 points in Goochland’s resounding 63-31 home win over the Statesmen. The Bulldogs with the triumph completed a sweep of Randolph-Henry in back-to-back nights after besting the same team 60-52 last Tuesday. Goochland overall won four of their five games going into this past Tuesday’s home matchup. Bell added 9 rebounds to his 19-point night. “There’s a whole lot of upside to him and we’re going to go as far as he wants to take us,” Goochland head coach Preston Gordon said of Bell. “And I know that’s a lot to ride on a sophomore, but it’s knowing the potential that this young man has on both ends of the floor…I’m proud of him. He’s a hard worker. There’s so much potential there for him.” Senior Quincy Snead made plays all over the place, double-doubling with 15 points and 11 rebounds while also mixing in 5 steals and 5 assists

and flying to the basketball in bids to keep it inbounds. “The energy that this young man brings to the table is just – it’s hard for other teams to match,” Gordon said of Snead. “I wish we had five of the guy; his motor…it’s unbelievable.” Junior Kameron Holman followed up a 23-point, 8-rebound, 7-assist, 4-steal night on Tuesday with 11 points last Wednesday. Gordon said that the Bulldogs were playing to their potential, and that they were shooting well and firing on all cylinders. “It’s knowing the caliber team that you have and finally getting these guys to put it all together,” Gordon said. “I thought we played a really, really fantastic first half.” The Bulldogs led Randolph-Henry 30-7 after the first quarter and 50-22 at halftime. They parlayed rebounds, a steal from Holman, a block by Bell and turnovers by the Statesmen into a 17-0 gameopening run. More than four minutes still remained in

the first half when Holman knocked down a long jumper inside the arc to join teammates Snead and Bell in tallying up double-digit points totals. “I thought the way we played set the tone from the beginning: getting in our press, applying ball pressure and being able to shoot the gaps and read their movements or actions,” Gordon said. He was really, really proud of senior Kyin Carter and how he played; while he didn’t score,

Carter coupled 6 rebounds with lockdown defensive play against Randolph-Henry’s Reginald Bullock, who the night before scored 12 points against Goochland. This time, Bullock was held to a 5-point game and a scoreless first half. “I just thought he just did a really nice job for us. Sometimes it’s not always about the glory of scoring points, and I think he’s okay with that,” Gordon said of Carter. “He’s an offensive line-

man, so he knows he’s not used to getting all the glory, but it’s doing the work down low.” Eight different players netted points for Goochland, and the entire bench got to play in last Tuesday’s game. Subs were in the game for the Bulldogs during the fourth quarter when the Statesmen hit on a 4-0 burst to open the stretch. Goochland still held a 28-point lead, but Gordon had remembered being down by that much and coming back to win the game. On the other side, he’s been up by 22 points before the other team came back to win. “You never can count out teams,” he said. That’s when Bell came back in, and that’s when he slammed in the dunk to spark both the crowd and his own team. He came right back out of the game, but RandolphHenry scored just 2 points after that. The night before against Randolph-Henry, Bell scored 14 points and added 7 rebounds, senior Walker Murray scored 9 points and

added 8 rebounds and Carter complemented 8 rebounds with 6 points. Kindrick Braxton in that same game added a 4-0 burst against the Statesmen. Gordon after last Wednesday’s game said he was proud of their fans and the support they get from the community. “It’s a good atmosphere,” he said. The Bulldogs on Friday took down Amelia 66-53 behind 18 points, 10 steals, 7 assists and 6 rebounds from Snead, 17 points from Holman, 14 points and 6 rebounds from Bell, 10 points from Murray and 10 rebounds from Carter. Bell threw down his second dunk in back-toback games on Friday, this one a two-hander that saw him hang onto the rim briefly after he put-back Snead’s layup attempt. The Class 3 Bulldogs then bested Class 5 Clover Hill 56-53 in Saturday’s invitational hosted by Monacan High School. Holman propelled Goochland to the victory on his game-winning 3-pointer, and he led his team with 19 points. Bell added 11 points and 6 rebounds, and Snead delivered 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. The Bulldogs’ winning streak, however, would end at 10 straight on Monday in a narrow 62-61 loss to Nottoway. Holman poured in 23 points in Monday’s setback, and Snead chipped in 11. Goochland looked to bounce back at home on Tuesday versus Prince Edward and will rematch Nottoway in a 7 p.m. home game on Friday. The Bulldogs will then return to the road to face Fluvanna next Monday at 7 p.m.

Football leaders make all-state Staff Report

File/Goochland Gazette

Grant Heidel (left) and Reese Vincent, seen after winning matches in a Tuesday, Jan. 7, home tri meet versus Benedictine and King William, won individual James River District wrestling championships for Goochland on Thursday.

Wrestlers win titles at district meet Staff Report

Goochland picked up two individual titles and four top two finishes in Thursday’s James River District wrestling championships held at Nottoway High School. Grant Heidel won the championship in the 132-pound weight class, and Reese Vincent won the title for 138. John Summitt and Ethan Ford placed runnerup for 120 and 195, respectively. The Bulldogs finished second overall in the team competition.

Bulldogs tough out wins in challenging Godwin tri meet Taking on a challenging pair of teams in Mills Godwin and Douglas Freeman at Mills Godwin High School last Wednesday, Goochland managed to earn four individual victories in team setbacks of 58-18 to Godwin and 66-6 to Freeman. Against Godwin, Summitt (120) pinned Thomas Brandenburger in 2:12, Vincent (138) defeated Colin Mayhew by decision and Alex Thompson (170) defeated Dylan Redfearn by a 6-5 decision. Against Freeman, Corey Vincent (152) pinned Braden Sweeney in 3:56.

Goochland splits duals with Tucker and Hermitage The previous week on Wednesday, Jan. 15, Goochland split its team duals at Hermitage High School, falling to J.R. Tucker 46-34 but defeating host Hermitage 47-35. “Overall it was a pretty good night,” Goochland head wrestling coach Mike Nadder said. “Never like to lose but I felt like we wrestled Tucker really well...it came down to the last match of the night and they won that match with a pin at the heavyweight division.” Against Hermitage, both teams had a few forfeits, so Nadder felt that, if they wrestled them hard head-to-head, his Bulldogs would have a chance. At 170 pounds, Jon Daly picked up a pin in 3:46. His opponent was wrestling him tough and the score was going back-and-forth, but Daly caught him in a move and got the pin. “We really needed it at that point,” Nadder said. Corey Vincent (152) picked up a pin in the second period. No points were scored in the first period. His opponent chose the bottom position for the second, and Vincent put him on his back and pinned him 37 seconds into the period.

Against Tucker, Nadder noted how his Bulldogs were wrestling really tough in the lower weights. John Summitt (120) picked up a pin in the first period. Blake Smith (126) got another quick pin in 38 seconds in the first period. Max Moreno (132) picked up a first-period pin in 1:49. Reese (138) got a technical fall by a score of 20-5 in the third period. Corey (145) got a pin in the second period. But from there, Nadder said that the Bulldogs did not match up as well with Tucker in the upper weights as they did in the lower weights. “Their upper weights did a really good job of getting them back in the match and with us having to forfeit three weight classes, we just could not keep up,” Nadder said. “We needed a pin at the heavyweight division to hopefully force a tie. But we did not win that match. I felt like we wrestled as good as we could to stay with them. “We go in as underdogs for every match. I was real proud of how the kids performed. Several of them knew they could’ve won their match, so it makes them just want to work that much harder in practice.” Goochland was slated to wrestle Powhatan on Wednesday; regionals (Feb. 14-15) are up next for the Bulldogs.

Goochland High School seniors Kindrick Braxton and Devin McCray – best friends and neighbors since kindergarten – concluded their high school careers together by making First Team All-State for defense on the Class 3 state football team. McCray – honored not only as a first team defensive back, but also as a Second Team All-State kick returner – rolled out 26 tackles (16 solo, one for loss), caught four interceptions, recovered a fumble, scored one defensive touchdown and earned Defensive Player of the Year in Class 3, Region B, Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the James River District and First Team All-Metro honors for defense this past season. On offense he added 46 carries for 429 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 20 passes for 364 more yards and 5 more TDs in 2019. McCray also had six returns for 115 yards. He will play defensive back for the University of Richmond. Braxton, who earned first team honors for defensive utility, dished out 67 tackles (32 solo, eight for loss), caught two interceptions and recovered one fumble in 2019. Beyond the regular season, the multisport standout had an all-star day on Saturday, Dec. 22, when he caught an interception and returned it for a touchdown while playing for the North All-Stars in the Big River Rivalry senior showcase football game, then added 6 points in his basketball game that night to help Goochland edge past Lee-Davis 63-60. Second Team All-State honorees from Goochland in addition to McCray included Connor Duncan (offensive line), Kameron Holman (receiver), Khalil Holman (defensive lineman) and Will Stratton (linebacker). Stratton, a junior, was second on the team in tackles with 80 (30 solos, eight for loss), delivered four sacks, forced one fumble and recovered five, scored two defensive touchdowns and blocked seven kicks. Stratton was also named to Second Team All-Metro for linebacker. Duncan, a senior, helped pave the way for his Bulldogs to total 3,591 yards of offense, including 2,151 yards rushing. and 65 touchdowns. Kameron, a junior, caught 21 passes in 2019 and led Goochland in receiving yards (422) and in touchdown receptions (seven). On defense he added 22 tackles and caught two interceptions. Khalil, a senior, delivered 37 tackles (13 solo, five for loss), had two sacks and recovered one fumble. All six players contributed to Goochland football going 12-2, winning the Class 3, Region B championship and reaching the state semifinals, in which the Bulldogs took eventual state champions Hopewell to the wire but came up just short in a 35-28 defeat.
