Hundreds take part in march for justice By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Looming thundershowers and reports of counter protesters did little to deter a group of around 200 from taking part in what organizers described as a march for solidarity last Friday. Organized by the group Goochland United, the march saw demonstrators make their way from Goochland High School to the county Courthouse, many holding signs and calling out for social justice reform. It was the second gathering this month in support of equality for African-Americans, following a demonstration held at the County Administration building on June 6, and was timed to coincide with Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, Goochland County School Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley, and School Board Chair John Wright met with the Randolph Elementary School faculty to introduce Melissa Reams as the next principal of Randolph Elementary School. Reams Reams, a resident of Goochland County and a parent of two Randolph students, replaces Dan Gardner, who resigned effective June 30 to assume an administrative position in Chesterfield County Public Schools.

Reams joins Goochland County Public Schools after nearly 16 years in public education, including experience in Henrico and Chesterfield County Public Schools as a first grade teacher, math teacher in residence, fourth grade teacher, associate principal, and most recently as principal of Greenfield Elementary School in Chesterfield County, where she has served as principal since 2016. At Greenfield, Mrs. Reams has led a faculty and staff to meet the needs of a student body of over 600 students where 22 languages are spoken. Reams was the recipient of the 2020 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership for Chesterfield

County Public Schools in 2020. This award recognizes one principal from among all schools in each of the four metro Richmond school divisions and is initiated on recommendation of the faculty. Reams was selected from among principals of over 60 schools in Chesterfield, and her award will be used to diversify the school’s inventory of culturally relevant literature, allowing all students to see themselves in the books they read. “I cannot wait to build upon the amazing things already happening at Randolph Elementary,” Reams says. “It is a true privilege to be named see Reams > page 4

Pictured on this page, demonstrators of all ages, many carrying signs, braved the threat of severe weather to march in a peaceful demonstration from Goochland High School to the county Courthouse on June 19. The date of the march was chosen to coincide with Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.

March continued from >1 a forum for people of all races to share ideas and gather information remains a top priority. Brown said he understands that some people grow up with negative feelings toward people who don’t look like them. “There’s always going to be people who grew up racist,” Brown said, “but the news these days is driving people to look for answers. And that openness is all it takes — people want to change.” To Goochland native Crystal Johnson, the recent demonstrations around the country have felt unlike than anything she has seen before. “I feel like it’s different this time,” Johnson said, adding that she is now focused on making sure that the momentum the movement has gained is not lost. She was joined Friday by demonstrators of all ages, black and white, many of whom wore shirts bearing the words “Black Lives Matter.” Johnson said she understood that in the past the movement may have been seen as unwelcoming to non

African-Americans, but noted that she now feels something has shifted. “I love seeing all the different faces,” Johnson said. “I’m excited.” Friday’s demonstrators stayed largely on the sidewalk as they moved in a line toward the Courthouse, waving back at passing drivers who shouted messages of support. Goochland County deputies were posted at each intersection along the way, and several more were stationed near the Courthouse Post Office, where a man with a shouldered AR15 rifle was observed yelling at demonstrators as they walked by. The man, who identified himself only as John, said he was upset by the recent unrest in Richmond. As deputies positioned themselves between John and the demonstrators, the rest of the line filed quietly by. Toward the back of the line of marchers were Goochland residents Shane and Elizabeth Tippett. Asked why he had decided to come out and take part in the march, Shane answered quietly but firmly. “For 63 years I’ve lived in a world that was wickedly bent to favor people who look like me,” he said. “And I don’t want that to go on any longer.”

God’s Kingdom Is Now!

Colossians 1:13 “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,” 1 John 5:18b-19 “…He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” Paul and John diagnosed what was really going on in their day and in any age. Lawlessness and rebellion are the visible symptom of the spiritual struggle going on in the invisible realm. Even good angels fight against wrong (Daniel 10:1213). Overcome? Submit to Him. Become a part of His church (Acts 2:37-47).

The show must go on

A pandemic may have stolen many senior year milestones, but a bit of outside-the-box thinking ensured 2020’s grads were sent off in style By Roslyn Ryan Editor

With schools shuttered since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Goochland County school leaders have faced more than their share of unprecedented obstacles this year. So when it came to the problem of how to honor graduating seniors while still adhering to social distancing guidelines, they knew they faced a major challenge. That solution they came up with? Head to the movies! Thanks to some outside-the-box thinking and the hospitality of Goochland Drive-In owners John and Kristina Heidel, Goochland seniors were able to gather together (safely, of course) one last time and celebrate the close of their high school journey. In the end, the Class of 2020 enjoyed an unforgettable graduation ceremony, once complete with all the joy and energy of a traditional commencement and plenty of extra, creative touches. It was a celebration that included honking horns and flashing lights mingling with the sound of applause coming from hundreds of vehicles, and messages from administrators and students beamed down from a silver screen. During an interview with National Public Radio’s Scott Simon, Goochland High School principal Chris Collier explained how they came up with the plan to use the drive-in for graduation. “We just weren’t seeing it opening up enough for us to be able to host a large-scale indoor graduation, and so we started exploring outdoor options,” Collier said. “And, honestly, the Goochland Drive-In just came up in conversation. And we said — you know what? - let’s go take a look at that. And they’re right in our backyard. And actually, their daughter — the owner’s daughter is one of our graduating seniors.” Even a passing rain shower couldn’t dampen the jubilation, which came to a crescendo thanks to a fireworks display that capped off the unforgettable night. “I know this was not the end to your senior year that you expected,” said Dr. Jeremy Raley, noting the sacrifices so many students had to make this year. “But tonight we have the opportunity to celebrate, and celebrate we will.” Among those honored were Austin Payne, who finished out his high school career with perfect attendance, salutatorian Coleman Boatwright, and valedictorian James DeLoach. In his address to his classmates, Boatwright focused on the importance of family, and not taking “anything in life for granted.” DeLoach, for his part, insisted that the things that were taken away from this year’s graduating class were not as important as the lessons that they had learned along the way. In the end, DeLoach said, “the journey is more important than the destination.”

Letter to the Editor Local religious leaders join to condemn racism

An open letter to a counter protester By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Dear John, We met on Friday, briefly, during a unity march held by Goochland United. The march began at Goochland High School around 6:15 p.m., and by the time the long line of demonstrators made it to where you and several others were stationed, in the parking lot of the

courthouse post office, you looked fit to be tied. I get it, you were angry. You are a law and order kind of guy and the recent unrest in Richmond has felt like a desecration — a finger in the eye and an affront to the values that you hold dear. It’s getting out of hand, you said, and somebody needs to stop it before it goes too far. John, I don’t know you. And you don’t know me. And I would bet you didn’t know any of the demonstrators personally. But here is the thing,

there were there, you would have heard thoughtful responses focused on the need to protect the rights of AfricanAmericans, promote social justice, and make the world better for the next generation. You also would have found quite a few young people, John, kids who took the time to make signs and whose dedication to a cause larger than themselves was so inspiring to see that it is still, days later, kind of hard to talk about. Unlike the unruly mobs in other places ripping down monuments and

vandalizing storefronts, these kids were taking a stand for something they believed in and hurting no one. And maybe that, John, was the toughest thing to see: if there was ever any doubt in those kids’ minds that hatred exists, you shut it down. When they saw you screaming at them, your face twisted in rage and an AR15 slung over your shoulder, I hope that it galvanized them rather than frightened them. But isn’t this the exact kind of thing they put their lives on the line to protect? John, I don’t know you. All I would beg is that you could somehow find it in your heart to extend that same courtesy to others, especially if you haven’t had the opportunity to meet them and find out what they are about. And if you do get the chance again to meet someone who doesn’t see the world the same way you do — or maybe even sees it very differently than you do — I hope you take it. I promise, John, you won’t be sorry you did.

Louisburg up next for Cadets alum Carter By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

After playing behind a few of Benedictine baseball’s greats, Brock Carter was looking forward to embracing a leading role while playing at shortstop in his senior season for the Cadets. And he was able to do so for one game. But then came the COVID-19 pandemic. And once it gripped the nation, all high school sports across the State of Virginia were wiped out. For Carter, a promising final year of high school baseball had been taken away. But he is far from done. The Class of 2020 graduate is embracing the opportunity to continue both his academic and baseball careers at Louisburg College in North Carolina. “I couldn’t be more happy.” Carter said Cam Cassady, who was an assistant coach at Benedictine before joining the Roanoke College baseball coaching staff last summer, helped him with advancing to the next level. “I really wanted to play again and prove myself there and hopefully move on to the next level after that,” Carter said. “It’s great to be able to play again, but it’s not just playing. It’s still baseball and you’ve got to work every day.” Louisburg is a two-year junior college, and its athletic teams compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association. “At Louisburg, it seems extremely structured, like it wasn’t just going to be a walk in the park,” he said. “It’s going to be challenging; you’re going to be held accountable, responsible and it’s not just going to be whatever you want to do.” He praised the confidence he observed from his coaches at Louisburg, including Billy Funk – the first coach whom he talked to and was interested in getting Carter down there – and head coach Blake Herring. “He knew what he was talking about and didn’t hesitate about any-

thing, knew exactly what to do and say,” Carter said of Herring. “He was a really good guy.” Carter will play for the team as a middle infielder. “I’m looking to go in and compete for a starting spot, hopefully start,” he said. “I’m looking to help them in any way we can and obviously win a lot and move on to the next and help them [achieve] their goal.” Carter started with T-Ball and played his way up through the Mechanicsville Little League. He took on middle school ball at Stonewall Jackson in Hanover County before attending Benedictine where he played throughout high school. He also started playing travel ball when he was 8 years old. The teams for which he played included RBA West and the Richmond Braves.

Carter felt he was decent at baseball from a young age, and so he stuck with it from there, trying to get better and better. He never wanted to stop. “That’s all I really wanted to do, was be on a field somewhere.” The main element he liked was the travelling. “That just expanded what you’ve ever known – you’ve always stayed in one spot where you’ve lived, and then you get to go to different states and then sometimes out of the country,” Carter said. “The main thing was leaving home and playing in other places in front of new people.” There are also the friendships you make along the way. “Because there are always different people on a team every year, especially through high school,” he

said. “You watch people come in, you watch people leave and then you go up and then that just keeps coming.” Carter mainly played catcher through eighth grade while also pitching a little bit, but he always liked being in the middle infield. Playing at the shortstop and second base positions was something that he just worked at and worked at. He focused on getting bigger and stronger, which helped him make the throw a lot easier from shortstop. And at Benedictine, he got to learn from tremendous talents. In addition to helping the Cadets on the mound in a relief role during games in his sophomore and junior seasons – he pitched 11 innings in his 10th grade year when he made varsity – Carter played behind middle infielders Greg Ryan Jr.

(VCU), Brett Cook (IMG Academy) and Jamari Baylor (Philadelphia Phillies), with whom Carter became good friends. In Benedictine’s first and only regulation game of 2020, Carter started at shortstop – the same position at which Ryan and Baylor started in 2017 and 2019, respectively, during the Cadets’ two state championship campaigns within the past four years. “You learn from them and you see what they do and how they act, how they react, what they do in-game, in tough situations, and how they respond,” Carter said of Baylor and Ryan. “They were probably two of the best I’ve ever seen, and getting to stand right behind them, during warm-ups before the see Carter> 9

VHSL wants high school sports to return

Uncertainty, however, surrounds the upcoming 2020-21 academic year By Eric Kolenich Times-Dispatch

The Virginia High School League wants sports to return this fall, even though it is unclear how schools will function in the upcoming semester. Henrico County, for example, is considering hybrid learning plans in which students take half their classes online and half in person. While it’s unclear if school districts will even allow competition this fall as COVID19 continues to affect the commonwealth, the VHSL is urging athletes to be allowed back on the field. “The VHSL believes it is essential to the physical and mental well-being of students to return to physical activity and athletic competition,” the league said in guidelines released Friday.

Carter continued from >8 game and in the dugout and then practice was the main part – you just see what they do and then you try to follow up and be right there and then when they need to be brought up, you kind of just have to be there . . . kind of just keep them motivated.” Carter observed that Ryan was “really smart and quick,” and that Baylor was more like an all-around “raw athlete.” “He would just make these plays and you’re like, ‘How do you do that?’” Carter said, adding that, when it came to filling their shoes: “It was like, ‘How am I going to do it?’ and then you just kind of look back and see what they did and do . . . all the routine things, and then if you make the spectacular plays, then it just kind of happens.” In addition to his teammates, Carter praised the experience of playing for coaches Cassady and Benedictine’s head baseball coach Sean Ryan. He said Cassady was

The call for sports to return comes even as the league acknowledges there is a “near certainty of recurrent outbreaks in the coming months.” It also acknowledged that school districts may enact different policies that create inequities between teams, that there likely will be a variation in what sports and activities are allowed in the next year, that teams might be forced to suspend play during the season if an outbreak occurs and that seasons might end without playoffs being conducted. Teams were given the green light to resume out-of-season practice on Monday, and school divisions have been working to submit plans to the Virginia Department of Education on how they intend to safely conduct practice. Some teams hope to begin practice as early as this Monday, and others project early July for their start dates. On Friday, the VHSL issued its guidelines for teams that are returning to practice amid the Phase Two restrictions set for the commonwealth by Gov. Ralph Northam. The guidelines are similar to the suggestions issued last month by the National Federation of High Schools.

always that coach who “would show up early to games even if it’s 30, 40 degrees outside” and was always willing to stay after. “He’s always been one to text and call and see what he can do,” Carter said. “Even during school hours, if we needed to talk to him, he would let us in and talk to us at school and help us with the class if he knew what to do, and then he was always pushing us to do more and more and more. “ And coach Ryan, Carter added, is “one of the best coaches you can ask for.” “He’s always pushing you, he’s trying to be not just your coach, but your friend and build a relationship just to be close with you and learn how you play,” Carter said. “He’s always trying to get us to do more and look better and expand and then he’s always trying to get us to be leaders for the younger guys.” While Carter was on the JV team in 2017, he still got to see through practice the varsity team that won that year’s state title. The following year, in his first season on varsity,

These sports include football, Staff and students will be screened before wrestling, lacrosse and cheerleading.

Carter got to learn from all of the returners, as well as Baylor and Cook during Carter’s junior year, when he and his teammates won the grand trophy in 2019. He was part of a Cadets team that not only went 28-2, but battled past Norfolk Christian, 11-10, in a state quarterfinals game that took two days and 14 innings to complete. “Being around it and just knowing what it takes and how to earn it . . . that would hopefully have translated into this year, which obviously we didn’t see that, but being able to just be a part of it and watching most of it . . . that’s just what it takes,” Carter said. While this year’s varsity team had several returners, many of those returners – including Carter – were embracing leading roles for the first time. “We had a lot of young guys, and we had a few people who were new, and . . . they earned their way,” Carter said. “I was curious to see how we’d work together because it was like a whole new lineup.” The Cadets opened the 2020

season strong, beating Walsingham Academy. But that would be the only game this year’s team would get to play, as the COVID-19 pandemic led to Virginia schools closing on Gov. Ralph Northam’s orders. As a result, the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association cancelled its 2020 spring sports seasons. For Carter, it kind of hurt because he worked so hard throughout high school to attain his goal of playing fulltime in the middle infield. “Senior year, it appeared to be that way, like I was going to be able to do that,” he said. “It kind of felt like: I was getting the chance to finally prove myself, and then it got cancelled . . . I didn’t get that opportunity.” But now, his focus is on college, and on contributing to Louisburg baseball. “I can’t worry about high school anymore,” he said. “I just want to be ready to compete for a starting spot and be able to play good there and to do what I can to help us win there and move on to the next.” He added: “The main thing

is to get everything I can out of Louisburg and then figure it out on the way . . . when the time comes, after Louisburg.” The lessons that baseball has taught Carter include the importance of working with others on a team and being there for them. “It’s not just you. It’s eight other people on the field along with the others on the bench,” he said. “You’re all a team, and even the coaches . . . and just being able to work with – especially travel ball, between high school and the teams always changing – how to work with different people . . . the teambuilding atmosphere.” Carter praised his family and their support – his sister and his grandparents – as well as his coaches, including Ryan and Cassady. Among his biggest supporters were his mom and dad. He said that they paid for all of the costs for him to play and travel, and that they’d take him to places outside of the state for baseball and spend that time with him. “They’ve always been there.”
