Goochland supervisors signed off last week on several county expenditures related to the ongoing fight against COVID-19, including new equipment for the county’s Fire and Rescue department and the Sheriff’s Office. Goochland’s Director of Financial Services Barbara Horlacher asked the board during the July 7 monthly meeting to approve the use of funds provided to the county through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to cover items that had already been purchased and those that various departments had requested. As Horlacher explained, these items are all things that the $2.1 million in CARES funding was intended to cover. Horlacher said she has been in regular contact with those who will audit the see CARES > page 2

This will allow the department to purchase new, more efficient equipment to help sanitize rescue vehicles after transporting patients. Additionally, a $196,350 budget supplement to the Sheriff ’s Office for FY21
expenses will cover the cost of infrared, walk-through thermometers to be used in the county’s court buildings. Also included were: $193,000 budget supplement to various departments for FY20 expenses and salary related to the pandemic. $40,000 budget supplement to IT for FY21 expenses related to virus software and the purchase of laptops to replace desktops. $400,000 for distribution to the schools for use in FY20 and FY21, which includes $217,000 for a schools budget supplement for FY21 expenses.

Midlo woman guilty of causing deadly crash at 288 and Broad By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Over a year after 62-yearold E. Yvonne Bullington was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 288 and Broad Street, the woman accused of causing her death appeared in Goochland Circuit Court on June 25. Hang T. Swanson, of Midlothian, was ultimately convicted of Improper Driving and fined $200. The crash that took Bullington’s life occurred on March 26, 2019, as Bullington was driving eastbound on Broad Street Rd. Swanson, who was traveling westbound on Broad Street Rd. was attempting to turn left onto the Route 288 southbound entrance ramp when she struck Bullington’s car. Bullington was pro-
nounced dead shortly thereafter. Bullington’s son Daniel released a statement on Monday, expressing the family’s dismay at the fact that the punishment handed down was not more severe. “The Bullington family is obviously disappointed with the final criminal charge of Improper Driving for which Mrs. Swanson was found guilty by the Goochland Circuit Court judge,” the statement read. “It is a shame that someone can cause a tragic loss of life by careless driving actions, and only be required to pay a $200 fine.” Bullington went on to say that the family will continue to “seek civil accountability in terms of wrongful death civil actions against Mrs. Swanson,” and is seeking to hold the doctor who treated her that day
responsible for what they see as his role in Yvonne Bullington’s death. According to information provided during the trial, Swanson had been travelling home from a medical appointment at the time of the crash. In the wake of the accident last year, Goochland County supervisors began looking at planned improvements to the interchange with renewed urgency. VDOT representative Marshall Wynne told the board members in April that funding for the $4.2 million project, which includes adding traffic signals and additional left turn lanes in the interchange, is slated to be completed by 2021. The contract for the work was awarded to Curtis Construction on Dec. 18 and is ongoing.

Town Hall continued from >1 Among the questions raised during the forum, which was held via the internet video conferencing service Zoom, were those focused on how school officials will ensure that students of color are better represented in the divisons’ gifted programs and also what will be done to make sure that all students feel safe as schools prepare to reopen their doors in August. Goochland school superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley, who was joined on the call by several members of his administrative team as well as several school board members, acknowledged that there had been times in the past when allegations of racial discrimination had not been handled appropriately by school staff, but insisted that the division remains focused on ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Referring to the new sixyear strategic plan adopted by the Goochland County School Board on June 9, Raley said the division’s positon on the importance of inclusion is firm. “Our school division drew a line in the sand on June 9,” said Raley. “This is something that is non-negotiable for us. As an organization we believe that the students who walk in our doors deserve the opportunity to feel welcome, included and safe. This is a long term approach that we are taking as a school division, and this is not going to be a topic that goes away.” Saturday’s forum was part of an ongoing dialogue that the school division has been having for several years with Goochland’s AfricanAmerican community, an effort that has included two previous community meetings to address what some in community have said is an inability
on the part of the division to adequately meet the needs of minority students. When it was her turn to speak, rising 7th grader Jalia Ganyuma expressed her concerns about the number of African-American students in the school division’s gifted and talented program, and asked how the division planned to make sure all students had access to those opportunities. In answer to her question, Raley shared that this is among “a multitude of issues” that the division is currently working to address, and pointed to the recent hire of Dr. Beth Fowler as the schools’ new Advanced Program and Equity Specialist as evidence of its commitment to change. Fowler, who was also on the call Saturday, noted that last year the divison was able to more than double the number of African American students involved in the gifted program in Goochland, and that efforts continue to build on that progress. Class of 2017 Goochland High School graduate Askia Mealy touched off a lengthy response when she inquired how school leaders plan to ensure that African-American history is included—and accurately represented—in the school curriculum, with several school representatives offering thoughts on how that issues could best be addressed. Toward the end of the session, Kendall Griffis asked school leaders to share how, in the wake of recent protests and calls for social justice around the nation, they were prepared to assist students who might not feel safe returning to school in August. In addition to reiterating the schools’ commitment to ensuring that all students are treated equitably and with respect, Raley noted that a policy document set to go before the school board on Tuesday will address certain displays
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County — including what Raley described as accessories and clothing items — that he said have been a focus of concern for some time. While declining to list specific items, Raley said that he suspected students “will feel a difference” when they return for the upcoming school year. In addition to the open exchanges between participants during Saturday’s forum, the organizers also provided school division leaders with the following list of demands: Goochland County Public Schools must implement a disciplinary policy for students who racially target/ bully students of color. This policy must include: A reporting system to include administration and a third-party review board. The appointment of an independent, third-party review board that will act as an oversight committee for the school system. The review board would investigate/examine systemic racial disparities and discrimination in Goochland County Public Schools. Diversity/training for all staff: Implement a policy that eliminates racial profiling/discrimination in schools. Define discipline for staff and faculty who violate this policy. Hire an ombudsman to represent the student interests when acts of racial discrimination are investigated and reported to the School Board Office. The selection of the ombudsman must include community input and the ombudsman must be a nonresident of Goochland County who has previous experience working in a school system. Improved transparency about programs for gifted students. The transparency must include: a. An orientation hosted by the counseling department for
parents and students who are interested in the programs. b. Information present about the criteria for the programs c. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Seeking to better understand others? Just ask By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I will be the first to admit it: I have been incredibly lucky. For the past 15 years or so, I have been able to make my living by, essentially, getting to try and figure out what makes people tick. There are plenty of reporters who cover one particular beat or another, some who write only about business or only about politics. Those of us fortunate enough to work in what is often called “community journalism” have far fewer parameters reigning in the people we talk to or the places we go. In short, we will talk to anyone about anything, which means that for every serious, consequential story that informs readers about something that will have a serious impact on their daily lives, there
also are probably at least a few stories about giant homegrown vegetables or dog fashion shows (which I love, by the way). To do this work is to be continuously floored, again and again, by the creativity, ingenuity and, yes, sometimes the eccentricity of the people you meet. A few years back I went to a gentleman’s home because someone had mentioned that he had a pretty impressive collection of tobacco memorabilia. As it turned out, it was among the biggest collections in the world. I have learned, over the years, to appreciate people’s passion for a given thing even if I don’t necessarily share it, whether it is for brewing beer or hunting wild game or taking part in historical re-enactments. Some people are happy to tell you exactly what they think
whether you like it or not: I was once on the receiving end of a vociferous — and not entirely unconvincing — lecture from an inventor about why the Spork was a terrible idea (forgive me, dear reader, but to my deep regret I have now forgotten exactly why). As one might guess, you often have no idea until you arrive for an interview exactly what you are going to learn. And you quickly learn that sometimes the story is not at all what you thought. I once had the pleasure of interviewing a newly-hired postmaster and learned that she had at one time aspired to be a professional opera singer. With all due respect to the United States Postal Service, now they had my attention. My point here, I suppose, is that over the years I have been extremely fortunate to get to speak
with people from so many walks of life and from so many different backgrounds. And I hope you will believe me when I say that most of us have far more in common than you would ever guess. Yes, there are differences, but there also are many more common experiences and connectors than some might guess. What’s even better — the part that I really wanted to note — is that most people are happy to share their stories. As human beings, we want to make connections. I hope as our cities and communities begin to open back up, we can find a renewed appreciation for the stories and experiences of those we may not think we have a whole lot in common with. In most cases, as I’ve learned, all you have to do is ask.
Return to school brings plenty of questions By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I have a suspicion the conversation regarding how and when to open schools across America will inevitably become more heated and create more division in a country that seems polarized on almost everything.
As a parent, I trust those who have insisted that getting kids back in school full-time can be accomplished safely as genuine. But, I also hear others who contend a normal opening and fiveday-a-week school is like playing Russian Roulette with the wellbeing of our most prized responsibilities, our children.

Unfortunately, the political implications of either of these positions makes the conversation more difficult, and places parents in the position of questioning the motives of experts. The confusion extends to higher learning in America, and America’s colleges and universities are struggling to devise plans
for reopening. Although the plans are as different as the campuses themselves, it seems many are opting for virtually-based learning when classes begin this fall. While I acknowledge few benefits from the current uncertainty or K-12 education and the dilemsee Schools > 7

Letters to the Editor Now is time to stand with African Americans, reject discrimination Dear Editor, It’s time! It’s about time that police brutality against African Americans and other minorities is finally in the spotlight. It’s been happening since slavery where excessive force was considered acceptable to punish slaves. It’s real! Many African Americans, including professionals have experienced it. So many cases recently: Travon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice. So many others not so publicly recognized. But now the police brutality and racism of some police officers is right out front. It was horrifying to see George Floyd slowly die while police officers looked on and continued the behavior that killed him. As you watched you wanted to pull them away, wondered why someone didn’t do anything. And then as Black Lives Matter protesters marched, in the spotlight, police in Atlanta had the audacity to do it again to Rashid Brooks. Then we are reminded and acquainted with other cases. So many cases just in the last years. Breonna Taylor, killed in her home in bed. I was especially moved by the situation of Elijah McClain, a gentle soul, a massage therapist, 22 years old, 140 lbs. anemic. How could a person like this be a threat to two adult men? I’m not saying all police are racist or use excessive force but, clearly, there are some. They may be recruited, or they can learn from other officers and particular experience. For example, in predominantly white neighborhoods police come when called to deal with specific problems. In neighborhood swhere African American and minorities generally live, where there may be more crime, see Letters > page 7

School continued from >6 ma it presents for parents with kids in those schools, I view the changing and flexibility of colleges and universities more encouraging and perhaps a sign of significant change in the way our children attend post-secondary classes. There’s no doubt in my mind that the current system of higher education is not sustainable. With rising tuitions that routinely exceed cost of living markers and a rate of applicants accepted steadily declining, the future of equal access to a college education seemed dismal. With school systems and colleges across the nation forced into alternative programs that depend on vir-

Additionally, research has shown subgroups are less likely to see physical, facial differences in members of another subgroup. Then there is the militarization of the police where police receive training and excess weapons from the military. Does that impose an attitude for the police to see themselves as aggressors rather than protectors? The racism of police mirrors the racism and inequalities that permeate our society — systemic, institutionalized racism. Inequalities that persist because of overt purposeful discrimination. tual instruction, the process became a learning experience not only for students, but for administrators. And, certainly, some conclusions are not promising. Recent incidents and reports verify a long-held belief that online learning does not replace the in-class experience. Make no mistake, it doesn’t. But officials also learned that some classes can be effectively administered online, the ones with teacher involvement garnering the best results. Not surprisingly, recent reports confirm that 25 percent of students did not even log in for the final weeks of class. Having sat in class on one of those final days of school, I suspect an equal number of my in-classmates also had checked out mentally for the year.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor So, how does this limited experiment in virtual learning at the college level reflect positively on the future of higher learning in America? Well, considering the possibilities of more spaces created at colleges across the country by offering basic classes online or a similar hybrid model, it could open the opportunity of college for many more Americans. And I don’t know many parents facing college decisions for their children who don’t agree that annually increasing tuitions and fees limit possibilities, and maybe perpetuate a system that has long resisted any suggestion of reform. One thing is for sure: The COVID-19 crisis will drastically affect higher learning in America, and has allowed Americans to question every

Our forefathers were brilliant. More so than they recognized. They didn’t give freedom or the vote to Blacks or Native Americans or even white women. But their ideas, the values and ideals that are the foundation of our beautiful country, provide a vision of possibility. It’s time that all Americans, those who say they love their country, believe in and act out the ideas that undergird our constitution so that they cherish all other Americans as much as they cherish the Flag. As more and more campuses announce plans to offer virtual-only classes in the fall, more and more applicants are questioning the need for exorbitant tuitions and fees, enrollment models will change. I’m not sure how any of this plays out long-term, and I’m certainly no expert on education. But, like millions of other parents, I’m facing a situation that presents more questions than answers when

I also acknowledge that some of the lessons learned during this pandemic could offer additional options for how the classroom of the future will actually look. Like many aspects of our lives, this crisis will result in new normals in all areas of our daily routines. For education, it’s an opportunity to expand and explore alternative learning models. the importance of in-person learning in the classroom or the value of dedicated teachers who commit endless hours educating our children. Remote learning can never replace the one-on-one interaction between student and teacher, or replace those classroom memories we hold so close to our hearts. Perhaps, a blend of remote and in-class instruction is a good place to begin — where it all ends is anybody’s guess.

Manakin Bulldogs take 2nd at tournament Contributed Report
WILLIAMSBURG – They got to play again. Student-athletes in Virginia had missed out on the chance to play spring sports due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But with this past weekend came the opportunity for athletes from Goochland – some still in high school, others on their way to college – to take on a girls soccer tournament in Williamsburg. The Virginia Legacy Soccer Club hosted the Virginia High School Cup from Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12. The tournament was not sanctioned by the Virginia High School League. The Manakin Bulldogs were not affiliated with Goochland High School, but they did have many members from the GHS girls’ soccer team on the roster. The team ultimately took second place in the Cup.
Goochland girls soccer coaches Paul Manno and Jason Funkhouser had tracked the evolution of the tournament over the past few months during the various COVID-19 phases, and as Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam moved the Commonwealth from Phase I to Phase II, a team was formed to begin training for the possibility of the tournament. Once Virginia moved to Phase III, the tournament was on. In addition to required waivers and liability forms that needed to be completed by all participants, several medical and social distancing procedures were implemented for the tournament to be held. Every player, coach and referee had their temperature taken prior to entering the field Contributed photo area. Bashinski delivers walk-off hit in 14-13 win By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette
Goochland High School alum Cole Bashinski, seen pitching in Tuesday’s home game versus Post 125, had the walk-off hit for Post 201 in its 14-13, 10-inning win over Post 361 on Thursday.
Before this past week, Goochland High School alum Cole Bashinski hadn’t played a baseball game of any kind since he and his Bulldogs scrimmaged Chancellor in March. After that, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of Virginia’s high school spring sports seasons, and since then, Bashinski hasn’t really been able to hang out with friends that much. So for the future Eastern Mennonite University player, it’s great to be back on the field this summer. “This is my life,” he said. “It feels really good to be back out here.”
Thursday’s four-hour battle with visiting Post 361 saw Bashinski enter the lineup late. He had stepped onto the mound to pitch in the top of the 10th inning with the game tied at 11-11, but Jesse Robinson and Zelgin Jackson knocked two hard hits past him to lift the visitors into a two-run lead. Bashinski would have the last word. He went up to bat after his teammate, Powhatan’s Stone Talley, got the ball past the shortstop to help drive in two runners and tie up the ballgame at 13-13. “When I got deep in the count, I just made sure I put a ball in play, put a good swing on it,” Bashinski said. He did more than that.
Bashinski smashed the line drive all the way to the rightcenter wall to bring home the winning, walk-off run and secure the wild 14-13 triumph for Post 201 over Post 361 in 10 innings. “It feels great that this team never backs down,” Bashinski said. “They have our backs, 24/7, no matter who’s pitching or hitting. Everybody’s with everybody.” His game-winner capped a two-game week that saw the host team in Powhatan tally up seven hours of total playtime and combine for a whopping 47 runs with its opponents. The hosting Seniors had clawed their way back from an 8-1 deficit after three-anda-half innings, out-producing
Post 361 10-3 through the rest of regulation. Talley was a huge part of why. In addition to batting 2-for-4 with two RBI and reaching base in five of six plate appearances, the rising Powhatan High School senior adjusted from giving up three runs as Post 201’s pitcher in the top of the fifth inning to none through the next four frames. In the top of the ninth with two runners in scoring position, Talley sat down his last batter of the night on a called strikeout. Talley said that at the beginning, he was “trying to do too much with it,” so he worked to slow down, throw see Post 201> 9

Reflecting on 25 years of Goochland softball Longtime head coach and teacher Amy Henneberger retires
So many players stood out across the years. There were the pitchers: Megan DuVall, Kasey Brandmahl, Brandi Wilson, Jessie Schools, Kaytlyn Jones and Kailyn Spencer. There was catcher Nikki Harris, who’s also been Henneberger’s assistant coach the past couple years. Chakiryn Jackson, Brandi Tester, Erica Lester, Amanda Deary, Jackie Tremain and Jordan Fleming all made their presence known on the field and on the team. Henneberger also praised her assistant coaches over the years, from Harris to Patrick Gordon, who was a senior at Goochland High School when Henneberger first arrived, to Sarah Voyack and Jennifer Cosby. Throughout the seasons, Henneberger’s
message to the girls was to have a strong work ethic – and to be good people. “Whatever thing you’re trying to accomplish, you work with people,” she said. “You all have to work together.” Henneberger, who played travel ball growing up as well as high school softball in Maryland all four years, got her first coaching job at Randolph-Henry High School, where she as an assistant softball coach for four years. She also became head coach of the basketball and volleyball teams at the school. When she transferred to Goochland, the coaching roles she held included assistant basketball coach, head volleyball coach and head softball coach. Henneberger had inherited a softball team that was struggling, so when she started coaching them, they were really eager to learn the skills and the basics. From there, the wins came, and games that they had normally lost by a lot of runs were now tight ball games. “It was really exciting coaching that first year,” she said, “and seeing the growth of the kids.” From there, the Bulldogs under Henneberger went on to win multiple district championships and compete in regional and state tournaments. They finished 2013 as the state runnersup in Virginia High School League’s Single A Division 2 prior to the reclassifications of divisions. They also reached VHSL’s state semifinals in the 2A division in 2017. Henneberger and her assistant coaches also got to see their Bulldogs make a triple play. It was in the first inning of a game against Randolph-Henry. The lead-off hitter singled,
and then the next batter doubled, putting both runners on second base and third base with no outs on the board. The next Randolph-Henry batter hit a ground ball to shortstop. Goochland’s shortstop checked the runner back to third base, then initiated a rare 6-3-2-5 play. “Our team came off the field acting all cool about it,” Henneberger said. “They were so used to us practicing ‘making a play after a play’ that it didn’t seem like a big deal to them. I think the coaches were more excited because we had never seen it in all the years we played or coached. “Randolph-Henry and us always had tough battles,” she added, “so it was great to break the momentum early and go on to win.” The keys to their victories and to their winning years, Henneberger said, were the players working together and not being selfish. “They put the team in front of everything else.” This spring technically marked her 25th season, but high school softball in 2020 was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Goochland’s seniors never got to play a single regular-season game this spring, and Henneberger felt for Rachel Ferguson, Rachel Carter, Lexi Hooe and Carleigh Gilstrap. “They were really fun girls to work with,” she said. “We expected big things this season.” Henneberger was very proud of how her players carried themselves over the years. “I’m just going to have a lot of good memories. I feel blessed that I got this coaching job 25 years ago and that I got to work with so many great players and parents, grandparents,” she said. “It’s like a family. It’s been a lot of fun.”
the sixth inning when he ran down a flyball behind the third base line in foul territory and hit the ground in a tumble – with the ball clutched in his glove. Mead also pointed to the efforts of the middle and bottom of the lineup, which helped tighten the game to one run across the fifth and sixth innings. “They kept battling,” Mead said. “I’m very proud of them.” Post 361 had stretched its lead to 11-5, but Powhatan’s Boelt, Andrew Cheatham, Trevor Waters and Connor Woodel clocked four straight hits to drive in three runs in the fifth, and then Talley and Boelt each brought in a
run in the sixth – Talley on a walk and Boelt on a sacrifice fly. That helped set up a memorable clutch hit from Post 201’s lead-off batter Alex Balisteri. Facing two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the James River High School alum and Walters State Community College player rocketed the ball high, deep and over the right-field wall to tie the game at 11-11 and force extra innings. Balisteri batted 4 for 6 with three RBI, a homer and two doubles, including one for two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Post 201 scored 13 of their 14 runs while facing two outs. For Post 361, Benedictine Class of 2020 graduate Jack Anderson delivered a run-
scoring base hit in the top of the third inning and finished the game with two RBI. Post 201 will host Post 284 on Thursday, July 16, and Post 137 on Tuesday, July 21. Both games will be held at Powhatan High School at 7 p.m.

GOOCHLAND – In the past 25 years, she’s seen the game change. The slingshot pitch evolved into the windmill pitch. The norm shifted from student-athletes playing three different sports across one calendar year to student-athletes specializing in one. But throughout that time, the student-athletes and community of Goochland County made an impression on Amy Henneberger. For the longtime head coach who retired after 31 years of teaching and 25 years at the helm of Goochland softball, it wasn’t about the wins and losses. It was about how people perceived the team. She remembered how they received letters from umpires who were impressed by the way Goochland’s team, coaches and fans carried themselves at games. She also remembered when a high school senior and softball standout from James River District rival Amelia County, Hannah Green, passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Henneberger’s captain, Kisha Braxton, got the Goochland players together, and they went to Amelia for the vigil in memory of Green. “That just really sums up how Goochland is,” Henneberger said. “They’re just a very caring community, and it just makes you feel good as a coach when your players do something like that on their own. It’s just great to be a Bulldog.”
Post 201 continued from >8 strikes and let his defense do what “it needs to do.” Both Talley and Josh Boelt, who were on vacation, left the previous night at 2 a.m. and took a 13-hour trip to get back and play in Thursday’s game. “That’s a testament to them on how bad they wanted to play baseball,” Post 201 coach Eric Mead said. “It took a while to get down here, but I’m glad that I did,” Talley said. “Got the W.” Boelt made a spectacular play in the top of

New scoreboards come to Goochland’s fields By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND - You could say that both Wes Farkas and the Goochland High School baseball scoreboard began their relationship with the Bulldogs baseball program at about the same time. Farkas first started coaching at Goochland with then-head coach Bryan Gordon during the 2001-02 school year – the same year that GHS students, teachers and faculty moved into the current building. It would be another year before official play on the fields would begin, as they were still under construction and were used sparingly, and for practice purposes only, during that time. But the scoreboard was there. And there it stood, directly behind left field, when Farkas coached alongside Gordon in his first five years in the program. When Brian Jordan would take 20-pitch at-bats, fouling off every pitch until he got the one he wanted. When Cory Alexander roamed the outfield, “catching everything within our zip code” from Farkas’ vantage point. And when Andrew Harcum, facing Maggie Walker Governor’s School, ended up turning a sacrifice bunt into an inside-the-park home run. But after 17 years of showing the winning scores in games, tournaments and championship finals, the original scoreboards for the high school’s baseball and softball fields have been retired from use by the school. All of the original boards had been in place since the new school was

built, and they were first used during the 2002-03 school year, when the fields became ready for play. Helping change the strike, ball and out counts and runs total on the baseball team’s scoreboard were a number of greats, ranging from, but not being limited to: Cory Alexander, Jeb Anderson, Tanner Bradshaw, Scott Carter, Reid Chenault, Joe Cutchins, Coleman Duty, Austin Goyne, Andrew Harcum, John Hicks, Kyle Hicks, Brian Jordan, John King, Wyatt Murray, Trace Nixon, Nick Norman, Zack Potts, Jackson Raines, Cole Starke and Ben Verlander. Farkas, who is now Goochland’s head baseball coach, was there throughout it all. Under the scoreboard lights, Farkas saw Joe Cutchins’ “tenacious love for the game and one of the best

course of the weekend, with temperatures on the turf fields topping 120 degrees. From Friday evening to Sunday morning, the Manakin Bulldogs won two games and lost one in the group stage of the Cup. They won 6-0 over a team featuring players from the Eastern Shore, and they also won 2-1 over a team featuring players from Hampton. The Bulldogs advanced on points to the finals of the Virginia High School Cup, losing
three or four feet off the bag. He remembers hearing numerous baseballs hit that scoreboard while he was pitching batting practice – something that was always a memorable experience for the batter, he said. “So many great young men have left their cleat marks there over the past 18 seasons on our field in the glow of those scoreboard lights.” Many more memories were made and captured in numeric form across the past two decades. But as time went on, the structures aged, and with aging structures comes increased maintenance. Bulbs and other parts had to be replaced. The baseball board became faded, and the lights were hard to see during 5 p.m. game starts. Farkas said there was a little bit of a “Wrigley feel” with a few
1-0 to the same team that beat them 6-1 in the group stage – a team from Poquoson – in a close battle for the championship. “Our players truly bounced back 24 hours after losing badly to a team to compete in tough conditions against a much older team and almost pull off the upset,” Manno said. “The coaches could not be more proud of how the team competed all weekend and responded in the finals.”
vines growing in and through some of the panels and bulbs. It seemed there was always some new issue arising with them. Replacements for the scoreboards were put in the Capital Improvements budget several years ago, and the lights were scheduled to be replaced this year with newer models, which feature LED lights that should, by their function, be brighter and easier to see from a fan’s perspective. Both of the new baseball and softball boards have the inning-byinning running score displays. Both of the boards even include the pitch counts for both the home and away teams. A new scoreboard is also being worked on for Goochland High School’s stadium, where the football and soccer teams play. Changes to the stadium will also include play clocks at each end of the field. But while the retired scoreboards will no longer be used at the high school fields, they’re slated to be repurposed. The current plan consists of the county’s parks and recreation department refurbishing and reusing the boards in some capacity. The future of Goochland’s home games on the fields, however, will shine on with the bulbs of new lights. “I think most of us will be glad for an upgrade,” Farkas said. “It will be odd looking out into left field and seeing something more modern at first, but the game still remains mostly the same over the years. “I am excited to see what the next decade will hold for Goochland Bulldog baseball, and I am so very blessed to be able to be a part of it.”
Recently graduated GHS seniors Claire Anderson, Julissa Gallegos and Victoria Lopez were all able to play alongside many of their high school teammates one last time, and in front of their families and friends. Through earning the silver medal, the relatively young Bulldogs team not only showcased the soccer talent being developed in Goochland, but it also signaled a bright future for the GHS girls soccer program.
