Local restaurant marks 35 years spent serving up Southern favorites
GCPS plan will offer students a path to future teaching career
Contributed report When the owners of Tanglewood Ordinary Restaurant started serving southern comfort food in on May 1, 1986, they never imagined that they would spend three and a half decades serving their unique family style Southern comfort food while creating memories doing what is now a tradition with so many of their patrons. “It is hard to believe we are marking our 35th year,” said Anne Hardwick, co-owner with her husband, Jim. “Sometimes it seems like we just got started.”
Proposal would add an education track to Advance College Academy program By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As Virginia continues to grapple with a state-wide teacher shortage, leaders from Goochland County Public Schools are working on a novel approach to recruit new talent. Essentially, says School Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley, they are hoping to grow their own. During last month’s monthly School Board meeting, Raley and board members listened intently as Dr. Beth Fowler outlined a plan to offer students in GCPS’s Advance College Academy (ACA) program the option of pursuing a Teacher Preparation track. Fowler currently oversees the division’s ACA program, a 62-credit associates degree program available to Goochland High School students as dual enrollment through J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. According to the GCPS website, ACA students take rigorous classes during their 9th and 10th grade years while completing the majority of their college coursework in 11th and 12th grades. application plan to help you achieve a healthy and attractive lawn. ing the chance for kids and their families to enjoy a day of fishing while also learning ethical, responsible angling techniques. This will be a catch and release event, and is intended for kids age 15 and under. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and lunch will be provided. No fishing license is required,

college credits and the same faculty support. It would also allow GCPS to become the first school division in the state to offer the education-focused ACA program in their home school. With 32 percent of Goochland High School students currently enrolled in the increasingly popular ACA program—for a total of 272 students—offering the teacher preparation track would
almost certainly help the division harvest its own crop of homegrown talent. It would also allow for enrolled students to transfer to four-year degree programs with a number of credits already earned, allowing them to more easily double major or pursue advanced degrees in their chosen field of education. “Our vision is to inspire the next generation to make a positive impact with this
degree program,” said Fowler. “We anticipate not only inspiring our students but paving a pathway that leads through Goochland schools to Reynolds Community College, a smooth transition to a fouryear degree focusing on education as a career choice, and ideally right back into the halls of Goochland County Public Schools where they can join us and inspire the next generation.”

Located in a log cabin listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Goochland County, Tanglewood has been

Built as a country dancehall, Tanglewood takes patrons on a step back in time with the original diagonally laid oak floor, hand hewn logs, and support beams made of whole trees. “Tanglewood has been so much a part of the history of Goochland over the decades,” said Jim. “We feel honored to have been a part of its history, and customers often fill us in on the history we missed, as far back as the 1930s. It is a wonderful place with a fascinating past and a great future.” There is a legacy collection of Saturday Evening Post

Guests from around the world have enjoyed the Southern comfort dining experience and unique ambiance for 35 years. New items have been added to the Tanglewood favorites over the years, like pot roast and macaroni and cheese, among others but the bowls and platters that come to the table still include Tanglewood’s famous fried chicken, scratch mashed potatoes, green beans cooked

Many noise issues could be resolved with ‘3C’ approach revelers — judging by the singing, shouting and cheering — kicked off the celebration in earnest. For the next six hours the party went on without interruption, finally winding down just after midnight. As I may have mentioned in earlier columns, I have been blessed with good neighbors. I could have asked them to turn it down and I have no doubt they would have done so. But sometimes living in a “live and let live” kind of place like my neighborhood means someone is doing the living while you’re trying to do the sleeping. To trot out the world’s most over-used — and yet almost always applicable — adage: It is what it is. A number of Goochand resi-
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
One Friday afternoon a few years ago, as I headed for home after a rather challenging day, I had just one thing on my mind: sleep. I had spent the week battling a nasty sinus infection and trying to wrap up several projects, and as my driveway came into view I felt a wave of relief. Home at last. The sun was still up when my head hit the pillow, just as it was five minutes after that when my windows began to rattle. Somewhere nearby a party was kicking off, and, if the decibel level was any indication, it was going to be a good one. As I downed another shot of Nyquil, a very enthusiastic group of
dents, unfortunately, have found themselves facing much worse noise issues over the years, and in some of these cases the issues have devolved into ugly feuds. A recent report by a committee charged with examining the noise issue sought to offer legal redress to those who can’t reach some other agreement. The report is 75 pages long and took two years and hundreds of hours to complete — all to spell out something that could have been said in three words: “Give and take.” If you hate the sound of shooting and your neighbor would like to spend every waking moment pretending to be John Wayne, you certainly have a problem. But with a little compromise, compassion
and common sense, two reasonable people can almost always find a solution. It isn’t complicated. The sticky wicket, unfortunately, is that both sides have to be willing to sacrifice something for the good of the relationship. And in today’s increasingly insular world, that seems to be happening less and less. The county’s attempt to curtail the noise will certainly be a win for many residents who have for too long been subjected to an unreasonable amount of disruption, and those who crafted it should be commended for their service. The only unfortunate thing, of course, is that we ever needed the county to intervene in the first place.
Mystery of famed pirate’s last years may finally be solved By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m no different from most when it comes to enjoying a good pirate story or a tale of adventure on the high seas when the skull and bones ruled the waves. Most of these adventures are based in the in the Caribbean region, and most didn’t end well for the looters or the unfortunate victims they encountered. Famous
pirates lived a life of adventure, searching for their next mark, and sailed from port to port absent of fear of repercussion. It all seems so glamorous on the surface, but researchers tell us the life of a pirate was no bed of roses, and many suffered unmentionable cruelty and death. While we all marvel at the story of Blackbeard and his legendary exploits that ended in a bloody shootout off the coast of Ocracoke

Letters to the Editor Local schools’ focus on addressing mental health offers benefits to entire community Dear Editor, Thanks to Roslyn Ryan for her editorial recognizing the mental health team at Goochland County Public Schools. The work that these and other mental health professionals do is so important, yet often minimized or ignored until tragedy strikes in the form of a youth taking his/her life, taking the lives of innocent others or both. The pandemic that we are finally emerging from, with its social isolation and reliance on electronic interaction, has been a challenge for youth and adults alike. Before anyone had ever heard of Covid, our young people were immersed in electronic games that put little value on life. Many of these games glorified pedestrian hit and run and gun violence. We are seeing these same events play out more and more in reality. It is virtual becoming reality. Many of us can recall the pressures young people face. Whether it was not being good enough to make the team, not having the ability to be a high achiever academically, or not having the resources to dress in the latest fashion or attend after school activities. What about just being accepted by others because of your appearance or a handicap? What are these children to do? If they are fortunate, they may have a close, caring friend to talk to them or an attentive parent with the time and resources to provide help. If not, Dr. Waggener and her team of counselors are there to help. Thank you Goochland County Public Schools for your work to help our children. Thank you Roslyn for the much deserved recognition of these critical resources. Vernon Fleming Maidens

Making the most of your vegetable plot Are you a seasoned vegetable grower or did the pandemic spark or re-ignite an interest in growing your own food? Do you have in-ground beds, raised beds, or pots on your deck? No matter your experience or garden size, you want to make the most of your growing space. Fortunately, there are plenty of growing methods to help you increase your bounty of home-grown vegetables. A simple strategy to set yourself up for success is to plant vegetables that are typically easy to grow. Radishes, collards, okra and arugula are examples of vegetables that grow well in Central Virginia. Visit the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service’s Home Vegetable Garden resource center at ext.vt.edu/lawngarden/home-vegetables.html to learn about other recommended vegetables for our area. Another strategy is to plant extra seeds to ensure good over-
all germination and then thin seedlings later to appropriate spacing needs. You can even challenge spacing instructions just a tad and plant more intensively or consider planting in staggered versus adjacent rows. Not only do these strategies increase yield, but the canopy formed by the slightly touching leaves discourages weed growth and reduces moisture loss. Vertical gardening is another method to save space and increase yield. Plants like beans, peas, cucumbers and melons climb up trellises while tomatoes spread upwards to fill out their cages, leaving you more growing space below. Be mindful of how shading could impact nearby plants. To learn more about implementing Intensive Gardening Methods visit the VCE website at ext. vt.edu and type ‘426 – 335’ in the search box to find a publication devoted to this topic. You may have heard of companion planting like the Native American practice of the “Three Sisters.” Beans are happy to grow up tall stalks of corn while squash trail
around the ground below. Each crop supports one other while enriching the soil and making efficient use of growing space. It’s also important to learn which plants are incompatible such as onions with beans and the Irish potato with lots of other vegetables. In order to learn the dos and don’ts of what to plant together, visit the West Virginia Extension Service website at extension.wvu.edu and type ‘Companion Planting’ in the search box. The Companion Planting Chart that is provided gives lots of good ideas for plants that grow well together and highlights combinations that should be avoided. Devote some time to create a map of your garden layout and a planting schedule. The vegetable planting guide from the Virginia Cooperative Extension (at the resource center mentioned above) is a valuable tool to understand when to plant each crop based upon your hardiness zone, but you can get creative! Consider interplanting vegetables with short days to harvest with those requiring longer growing periods. One combination could be radishes, which average 20 to 30 days to harvest, with carrots, which average 70 to 80 days to harvest. Succession planting, such as sowing beet seeds every three

weeks, can help you lengthen the overall harvest period of a particular vegetable. Another example would be direct sowing lettuce seeds at the same time you are moving established lettuce plants out to the garden. Don’t forget to leave some space for flowering plants that attract pollinators. Studies have shown that an increased pollinator population can double the yield of a vegetable garden. It’s ideal to choose varieties that bloom in the Spring, Summer, and Fall so your pollinators stay around throughout the season. You can find information on the best plants for pollinators at extension.psu.edu/bestplants-for-pollinators . Keep in mind that quick growing vegetables can provide you a lot of food within a short amount of time, but some crops that require a longer growing period may offer a long shelf-life with proper storage. Examples include Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic, and winter squash. With almost everything you grow, you can try your hand at different methods of preserving your bounty from simple freezing and dehydrating to canning, pickling, and fermenting. Because, of course, making the most of your vegetable growing space is ultimately about making the most of your harvest. rity status in the Crescent City and even a degree of respectability when they aided General Andrew Jackson in his defense of the city in the Battle of New Orleans that earned them a pardon from President James Madison. Jean Laffite’s death was reported in the late 1820s, but the details and location of his demise have long since been the source of controversy. Two North Carolina women think they have uncovered the mystery of the colorful pirate’s later life and death. The two contend in a new book that Laffite possibly fled to Cuba to escape American justice and eventually wound up in Lincolnton, North Carolina. For decades, the rumors ran wild among the city’s old-timers that Laffite didn’t die in the Caribbean or New Orleans, but lived a long and relaxed life in the tiny city of Lincolnton. Through unrelenting research and documentation, the pair of authors estab-

lished a timeline that, in their mind, establishes the presence of Laffite in Lincolnton for decades following his reported death. Ashley Oliphant and Beth Yarborough claim the notorious pirate lived in Lincolnton until his death at age 96 under the name of Lorenzo Ferrer and is buried in the local cemetery. Bolstering their claim was the discovery of a sword with Laffite’s signature on it found hanging on the wall of a local Free Mason Lodge in the small town. The ladies believe they have unravelled the mystery of Jean Laffite in their book Jean Laffite Revealed: Unravelling one of America’s Longest Running Mysteries, and contend that Ferrer lived a quiet life in Lincolnton and never worked a day in the period he lived there. Coupled with the sword and documentation gathered through tireless efforts, the pair is prepared to accept Laffite as the second pirate who met his end in North Carolina. Mystery solved? Maybe.

Goochland roundup: boys soccer opens season 2-0 Staff Reports
Marshall Lindner had moved from Long Island to Manakin Farms to be closer to his two grandsons, and after he had won four state championships with Friends Academy – one in baseball, three in soccer – he was getting ready for his 46th season of coaching, and his first at the helm of Goochland’s boys varsity soccer team. And then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, wiping out the 2020 spring regular season entirely. Lindner’s regular-season debut as the head coach of the Bulldogs would not come until nearly 14 months later. But in Goochland’s opening week, Lindner’s boys soccer unit quickly made its presence known, scoring 15 goals in two days. The Bulldogs defeated Buckingham 6-0 in their season opener last Tuesday and routed Cumberland 9-0 in their first road game of 2021 last Wednesday to head into their next game on a 2-0 start. Sophomore Conner Doersch, who was supposed to play his first regular season on varsity last year, has shined in his debut, netting two goals in each of the first two games to lead the team in scoring. Senior Charlie Flammia, who contributed to Goochland’s 17-1 season in 2019, scored once versus Buckingham and twice versus Cumberland. Another returner from that 2019 season, Caleb Moyer, had a strong game on defense against Buckingham. Goochland keepers Yoshi

DaSilva and Braeden McKeown shared time in the goal in both shutouts. Jayme Roblero, Gintas Putinas and Cody Ware added goals versus Buckingham. From the season opener versus the Knights, Lindner said he was very pleased with the way his team played together, passed the ball and played unselfishly. “They played a good teamoriented game,” Lindner said. “I was very pleased with that.” He added that they played well as a team in their win over Cumberland the following day. In addition to the goals scored by Doersch and Flammia – who had two each against the Dukes – DaSilva, Ware, Mike Mullen, River Green and Jonathan Lease each scored one. “I was very pleased with what we did,” Lindner said. “It was a good, clean game. Both teams hustled.” The Bulldogs look to stay healthy and keep playing well. They were slated to take on Amelia on the road on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and they will look to make up a home

The Cadets rolled out a dominant week to improve their record to 11-6 with competitive wins over Miller School of Albemarle (4-3 in 9-innings) last Monday, Highland (7-5) last Wednesday and Cape Henry Collegiate (5-3) on Saturday. The Cadets’ win at home last Monday over Miller was a bounceback effort from a 9-1 loss to the same team in Charlottesville three days prior. In the Monday rematch, Miller led 3-1 until Benedictine added a run in the sixth inning, and then Nick Neighbors launched
the game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Victor Johnson hit the game-winning, walk-off homer in the ninth. Jay Woolfolk also had a solo homer in the first inning. Daniel Lingle pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in relief. In last Wednesday’s game, Highland seized a 5-3 lead with three runs in the fifth inning, but Benedictine rallied on four runs in the top of the seventh and held the lead from there. Against Cape Henry on Saturday, the Cadets took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, in which they added two more insurance runs to stay ahead of a three-run surge from the Dolphins in the bottom of the frame. Lingle and Connor Handy, who struck out nine batters, were strong on the mound, and Hank Carpin had two hits, including his first homer. Johnson, Corey Adams and Riley Roarty each had two hits, and Bo Dortch and Jackson Cray each delivered an RBI single.

team went 1-1 to open its 2021 spring season and earned a 5-4 team win in its season opener over Chancellor last Monday. The close match featured a singles tiebreaker and a battle to the finish in doubles. The young team will look to bounce back from a 9-0 setback to Randolph-Henry on a windy Friday with Thursday’s 4:30 p.m. home match versus Buckingham. The unit will also rematch Randolph-Henry at home this coming Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Goochland’s varsity baseball and softball teams both bounced back from seasonopening losses to Buckingham to defeat Cumberland this past week. After leaving 11 runners on base in its 8-4 setback to the Knights, the Bulldogs baseball team routed the Dukes 10-0, and Goochland’s softball team, after taking a narrow 7-5 loss to the Knights, trounced Cumberland 11-0. Goochland softball hosts Amelia on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. while Goochland baseball will play at Amelia on Thursday at 5 p.m and will host Prince Edward this coming Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Following their season-opening 8-1 win over Chancellor, Goochland improved to 2-1 with an 8-1 setback to Collegiate and a 7-2 win over Rappahannock. Against the Raiders, Adam Webb won 8-0, and senior Reid Dameron, Alex Peskin and Ryan Bowers each won 8-5. In doubles, Webb and Dameron won 8-3, Peskin and David Townsend won 8-5 and Bowers and Charlie Alston All-region accolades narrowly won 9-8. For some, address ambiguity remains a problem Officials trace main source of issue to current USPS policy By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For homeowners living near the border of Goochland and Henrico, the simple question of where they live can be a tricky one.
In some cases, they are listed by the United States Postal Service as living in Richmond, by the Census Bureau as residing in Henrico, and by their own reckoning as residents of Goochland. According to Goochland County Administrator Andrew Young, who addressed the matter briefly during a joint Town Hall session held by the Board of Supervisors and the County School Board last March, the various parties involved have
TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
been working for several years to find some resolution to the problem. Unfortunately, Young said, making progress has been tough. In addition to the fact that representatives from the Post Office have remained reluctant to change their current system of assigning addresses, Young pointed out that a number of business owners have expressed a preference for keeping their current address listings.
He also reassured residents that anyone residing within the recognized border of Goochland is considered a Goochland resident regardless of their mailing address. Young also insisted that his administration has not given up, despite the apparent stalemate. At this point, “we are continuing to work with the Postal Service to eliminate some of the confusion that does seem to be out there,” Young said.

In search of the lost umami: Getting the most out of your tomatoes By Virginia McCown Contributing Writer
In Japanese, umami means “essence of deliciousness” and is sometimes referred to as the “fifth taste.” The umami sensation challenges the definitions of sweet, sour, salty and bitter. In my little world of tomato gardening, umami remains illusive. Heirloom tomatoes are still the best when it comes to taste and substance, but they are often difficult to grow. I confess I love the taste of ‘Cherokee Purple.’ Yet, at the end of each season, I vow, “Never again!” For all the bother growing a ‘Cherokee Purple’ tomato plant, I still plant one every season. If I’m lucky I’ll get six acceptable eating tomatoes a year. What’s left is fed to my chickens. ‘Cherokee Purple,’ like many heirloom varieties, is subject to every disease
our Central Virginia summers throw at it. It’s why we don’t see heirloom tomatoes in grocery stores. Big growers and suppliers find that growing heirlooms simply isn’t worth the bother. Don’t get me wrong. I love the heirlooms, truly I do. But if you’re looking to prepare, can or preserve your own salsa or sauce, they’re simply unreliable. Do you want plenty of plump, fresh tomatoes? My advice is to grow hybrid disease resistant varieties. Yet…… could some umami be better than no umami? Darn straight. Odd-sounding names such as ‘Box Car Willie,’ ‘Aunt Ruby’s German Green,’ ‘Mortgage Lifter,’ and ‘Costoluto Genovese’ are only a few old heirlooms available to grow from seed. Each has its own interesting history. “My favorite large heir-
loom is still ‘Barnes Mountain Orange,’” says Edmund Frost of Common Wealth Seed Growers in Louisa County (www.commonwealthseeds. com). “It tastes really good, is beautiful, and cracks less than other large heirlooms.” “I also liked ‘Arkansas Traveler’ a basic small to medium round pink salad tomato,” Frost continued. “It’s productive, tastes good and doesn’t split.” He also recommended ‘Ruthje,’ a cherry tomato, and the light yellow-colored ‘Garden Peach.’ Imagine a warm summer’s day nibbling on heirloom slices with a little salt and some freshly ground pepper --- or chowing down a squishy tomato sandwich prepared with homemade mayonnaise… Mmm…..mmm… mmm…. Umami!

Tomato Growing 101 Even if your harvest is small, your own home grown tomatoes are a reward in and of themselves. Success means choosing varieties that are a good fit for Central our hot, humid summers. What characteristics are you looking for? Do you live in an apartment, a townhouse or a larger suburban or rural site? Let’s discuss some basics.
where the soil is said to influence the taste. Make sure your planting site is sunny. Tomatoes grow well in five-gallon buckets, raised beds or directly in the ground. Each plant needs plenty of room--- at least six square feet per plant. If this is impossible to accomplish, remember that the main goal is to keep the plants’ leaves aerated. Aggressive weekly pruning will be necessary if you chose to grow your tomatoes close together.
Determinate v. Indeterminate
Soil
Determinate tomato varieties tend to be shorter and bushier. Most ripen at about the same time. Determinate varieties are handy if canning salsa or sauce is your end goal. Indeterminate varieties tend to be taller and more sprawling or vining in nature. They don’t ripen all at once. Their harvest is spread out over the season,.
Tomatoes prefer loose soil with a pH of 6 or 7. Add a handful of bone meal or some calcium to the soil when transplanting outside. Extra calcium early at the beginning of the growing season will help eliminate blossom-end rot later on. Calcium can be found in composted chicken manure, Epsom salts, and even human over-thecounter calcium supplements.
Fruit Characteristics Yes, tomatoes are a fruit and not a vegetable. This fruit comes in many sizes and qualities. Cherry Cherry tomato plants range from dwarf (Tiny Tim) to plants that grow to more than 17 feet (Sweet 100) Beefsteak These are the large tomatoes that easily fit on a single hamburger patty. One Beefsteak tomato can weigh up to two pounds or more! Paste These are the plum or pearshaped fruits with very meaty interiors. The seeds are centralized within the core of the fruit so paste tomatoes are ideal for making salsa or pasta sauce. Some varieties hail originally from Sicily and volcanic regions
Moisture Water steadily and evenly. Individual plants require at least a gallon of water per week. Drought can slow plant growth. An excess of water after a dry spell or drought can cause individual fruits to crack.
“Vegetables Recommended for Virginia,” publication 426-480.
Diseases Tomatoes face a plethora of diseases. Aphids and tomato hornworms are the most common insect pests but can be controlled. Diseases are harder to control. Here are the most common disease symptoms to look for:
Poor Fruit Set You discover you have flowers and healthy plants but few tomatoes if any. Too much nitrogen in the soil encourages green leafy growth, and the tomatoes aren’t focusing on fruit formation. Were the plants situated too close or crowded when placing them out into the soil in spring? Tomatoes air pollinate but also rely on insects. Prune some of the growth to allow for ventilation.
Leaf Roll Mature tomato plants begin to form curled leaves particularly near the bottoms of the plants. Wet soil, high temperatures, and excessive pruning can cause this problem. Fortunately, it rarely effects fruit formation. Avoid standing water and excessive pruning.
Sunscald Support Plants should be staked or caged. Trellising between tall, strong poles is another method. A heavy-duty twine weaved between the poles acts as a very effective support. Whatever tomato variety you choose, have fun growing it. For more information including directions on growing tomatoes from seed, consult Virginia Cooperative Extension publication 426-418, “Tomatoes,” and
Plants are healthy and the tomatoes ripen normally. Then as the fruit fully ripens, yellowish patches form on the tops of the fruits. Avoid excessive pruning if possible. Leaving some leaves and branches provides shade for the fruit thus preventing damage from sun rays.
