The idea behind this commission is that politicians should not have the unchecked power to draw their own districts and “We the People” should have a seat at the table. If we, as citizens of Goochland County, want to ensure that we have districts which represent the best interests of the citizensthen we need to develop commissions like this at the county level.

The citizens should be a part of the process when these decisions are being made by our county leaders this year and in future redistricting years.

For that reason, I urge each of you to ask your representative on the Board of Supervisors to create a committee of citizens to help draw the county’s new district lines in accordance with the best practices being implemented at the state level.

Change, of course, is both necessary and inevitable, and clinging to an outdated or inefficient way of doing anything never gets any person — or any organization — nearly as far as a thoughtful, open-minded approach.

While the original article in Forbes was written with an eye toward business, it would seem that the Goochland County Public School (GCPS) division has also decided to take a fresh look at the way things have always been done, specifically the way the traditional school year has been structured. Referred to in some areas as “year-round school” and in recent discussions here as creating a “balanced calendar,” the idea is fairly simple: take the same number of instructional days — 180 — and allocate them more evenly over the course of the calendar year. Instead of the months-long summer break that has been a staple of the school year for American students since the mid-nineteenth century, there would be shorter periods of vacation that would occur more often.

Last week, during a virtual meeting on the matter, GCPS officials laid out the reasons that the district has been considering this approach, touching on the research that has shown a balanced school calendar can have myriad benefits for students, including helping eradicate the dreaded “summer slump” (the loss of learning gains that has been shown to occur during summer break).

To be sure, reworking a school calendar that has been in effect for generations would likely cause some consternation among those who prefer to keep things as they are, and school leaders have expressed a deep concern for making sure any changes would be implemented thoughtfully and with the needs of local families in mind.

Regardless of what the final decision is, we applaud Goochland County Public Schools for introducing a plan that is focused not on what has always been done but on what needs to be done to ensure the best outcomes for county students.

Change isn’t easy, or even always necessary, but being willing to take a fresh look at an old strategy is never the wrong move.
